Chapter Text
Hamid wasn’t expecting any exciting mail when he went out to the mailbox that afternoon. As he looked through the various letters, he came across one that made his heart soar. A letter from Azu.
He immediately opened it. It was at first standard, asking how he was and telling him about the clinic and how things were running.
It was on the second page that informed him something both shocking and amazing. Azu was pregnant .
He was stunned into silence, and as he continued to read he saw that she had invited him to come visit if he so chose,
”It would be lovely to have a good friend like you here with me through this process. I hope to see you here soon. I’ll be taking time away from the clinic for now, so anytime is perfect. I love you very much, -Azu.”
Hamid immediately made arrangements to take some time off work and arranged to travel a bit up the Nile to see her at the address she provided. It wasn’t far, but Hamid packed as though he was staying for a good long while. Not three days after he received the letter, he arrived at Azu’s small villa.
He knocked on the door, “Azu! It’s Hamid!”
Her familiar voice came from inside, “I’m coming!”
Azu flung the door open. She was absolutely glowing. Pregnancy suited her. Her hair had grown out considerably and she was wearing a flowery dress that perfectly accented her growing bump.
“Hi!!” Hamid said, hugging her as best he could before walking into the doorway, “How are you feeling? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I’m feeling very well,” she said, beaming at him, “And what do you mean? It’s only been a month! I couldn’t have told you any sooner!”
Hamid frowned. “W-what? What do you mean it’s only been a month?”
Azu looked a little confused. “I’m only a month along?”
Hamid hesitated, “I-I don’t want to sound rude b-but you’re really big for one month. It doesn’t seem right...”
Azu’s face lit up, “Oh! I know what’s going on,” she said, leading him into her sitting room, “With all the work I’ve been doing at the clinic, I’ve learned that different species progress at different rates! I’ll be at full term in three months, whereas a human would reach full term at 9 months!”
Hamid took a seat next to the chair that Azu had settled into, “T-that certainly makes a lot more sense!”
“Yes, I’m about halfway through. The morning sickness has passed and I’m really only dealing with cravings right now.” She rubbed her belly, “I’m really just excited to meet them.”
“This is amazing, Azu!! I’m so so happy for you,” Hamid said, nearly jumping out of his seat, “Have you thought of names yet?”
Azu smiled, running her hands over her bump, “I think I’m going to make them Sasha.”
Hamid’s eyes lit up. “That’s beautiful, Azu!”
Azu beamed, rubbing her belly. “Thank you. I’m rather hungry. Would you like to have something to eat?”
“You know I’m not going to turn down a snack,” Hamid laughed,
“Good! I knew you hadn’t changed that much”
Azu giggled, pulling herself up. "Do you like pickles? As stereotypical as it is, it's all I've been craving. That and blackberries."
"That's...certainly an interesting combination."
“I don’t blame you for turning your nose up... I’ve got that cheese you liked so much the last time you were here?”
“That sounds lovely!”
—————
It was a quiet, happy afternoon. Lots of catching up, laughing, talking, and Hamid making sure Azu was hydrated. It was funny to see him fuss.
Azu mindlessly rubbed her bump. "I'm thinking of painting the nursery like the sky. Like it's above the clouds. "
"That sounds beautiful, Azu. I can't wait to help."
“I’m glad you’re staying for a while, I’ve really missed seeing you so much.”
“So have I... I’ve brought you a few books that I thought you might like, mostly newer ones—“
Azu gasped suddenly, her hands flying to her stomach. Hamid immediately went quiet, “What? What’s happening? Are you alright?”
A smile spread across Azu's face. "They're moving. They've never done that before."
Joy soared in Hamid's heart. He immediately jumped up and ran over. Azu took his hand and pressed it to her bump.
It was faint, but Hamid could feel small flutterings under his palm.
“This feels so strange,” Azu laughed, “In the best sort of way.”
“Yes, it certainly is...” Hamid trailed off for a moment, amazed, “I remember my mum used to let me feel when she was pregnant with Ismail and Ishaq… Hello, little one.”
Azu smiled. "You're the godfather of course."
Hamid's heart squeezed. "Really?"
"Of course."
Hamid wrapped his arms around Azu and squeezed her in a tight hug, “I’m so proud of you, Azu.”
Azu hugged him tightly. "I'm so glad you're here. "
"Has anyone else come around?"
"My brother, but he went home to his own family. You're the closest. I expect some more visitors in the coming month."
Hamid thought for a moment, “I just realized, I can stay until the baby comes! I didn’t know how soon it would be...” He looked up at Azu, “Only i-if you want me to.”
Azu laughed, putting a hand on Hamid’s shoulder, “I’d like nothing more.”

Cel knocked excitedly on the door. “I’m just so excited!”
James hoisted their trunk out of the carriage. “Howard, get out and help me!”
Howard, who’d been fast asleep against the carriage door, snapped awake and scrambled out.
Hamid, hearing the commotion outside and the knock at the door, looked up from his book. He looked at Azu who had fallen asleep in her chair. It had been nearly a month since he had arrived and they had already begun working on the nursery. He shook her lightly,
“Azu, I think Cel, Barnes and Carter are here.”
She blinked awake. “Oh, that’s lovely. Could you go let them in? My feet are rather sore.”
“Oh yes of course. “ he took off running towards the door.
By this time, all three were now standing at the door, the carriage already having pulled away. They all looked rather surprised to see Hamid open the door,
“Oh hi!! I didn’t expect to see you here, Hamid!” Cel said, scooping him up into a tight hug,
“Well, I came to help Azu out through all of this.” he said, only slightly being able to breathe as a result of Cel’s hug.
“Good to see you, Hamid,” James said, shaking his hand after Cel had set him down again.
Howard, once setting down the case, had put his head on James’s shoulder and proceeded to nod off again. James elbowed him and he jerked awake. “What?! Oh yeah, hey Hamid.”
“Hi Carter. You’re awfully tired.”
“Up late working. I have an exhibit opening two days after we get back.”
“You can sleep whenever you need, it’s not like we’ve got plans or anything.” Hamid said, using them all through the door and into the sitting room.
“Hello!” Azu said, walking towards the group,
“Hi!” Cel nearly squealed as they ran up to Azu, hugging her, “It’s so good to see you!!” They looked at Azu’s belly, “And it’s good to see you little buddy!”
“Oh they’re very happy to see you. “ Azu said. “Squirmy.”
All three people hurried to feel her bump. Azu laughed as she was bombarded with love.
“Oh wow,” James said, ever the man of many words, “That’s weird... But, like, in a good way!” He added, feeling like he’d insulted her.
“It certainly is... Howard, you look tired.” Azu said, a concerned expression on her face.
“Just been working,” he said, yawning. “Tjelvar and I have an exhibition on Vikings that opens next week. Loads of paperwork.”
“Oh dear, why don’t you go take a nap and Hamid and I will get started on lunch.”
“Cmon,” Barnes said, putting an arm around Carter and leading him down the hall to their room. As they left, Azu, Hamid, and Cel walked into the kitchen,
“So how are you doing? You sent the letter a while ago so I’m not sure how it’s going!” Cel seemed very excited about the whole thing.
Azu smiled. Cel's excitement was infectious. "I'm very well. I'm close to the end and it's starting to get uncomfortable but we're getting ready. I've got maybe another 6 weeks until my due date."
Cel was vibrating. "I cannot believe it's been so fast. I know Orcs gestate faster but it's still so strange. People like me, with elvish blood, can take almost a year and a half to get to full term."
Azu’s eyes went wide, “Really? I suppose I didn’t research that far out... We don’t get too many people in the clinic with elvish blood. That seems so long.”
“That’s why I was so shocked,” Hamid laughed, “A full term is about a year for a halfling, so three months seemed rather small.”
Azu smiled, “I’m so happy you’re here,”
"Me too," Cel said. "So what are we having?"
Azu went to the ice box. "I'm feeling cheese toast? Anyone else?"
“Oh that sounds lovely!” Cel replied, “Do you need any help?”
“No, we should be alright, but thank you. You can sit down, you’ve had an awfully long journey.”
“It wasn’t that bad,” Barnes said, walking into the kitchen, “Carter’s already asleep, had to basically pry him off of me.”
"Poor thing," Azu said, "working so hard."
"It's just nice to have him home," James said, sitting down at the table. "He was in Greenland for almost 3 months."
"Oh that's so long to be away from your loved ones." Hamid squeezed.
Cel nodded. "We visited on the boat some but he was so busy. He adores his job."
“That’s wonderful! I’m glad he’s found this, it’s good for him.” Hamid smiled.
“These should be done soon, they don’t take too long,” Azu said from behind the kitchen counter.
Azu began to fix the cheese bread as Hamid went about fixing lemonade. Lemonade had become one of Azu's main cravings and Hamid had become very good at making it.
“So how have things been at the clinic?” Cel asked.
“I haven’t been in much but it's all very strange at the moment... there has to be a midwife for the midwife, you know?” Azu said, eliciting a laugh from everyone.
After a moment, Azu winced slightly, “This little one’s got quite the kick.”
“Are you alright?” Barnes asked, seeming quite worried.
“Yes, I’m alright,” Azu laughed, “As annoying as it might be sometimes, it’s just amazing.”
“I can only imagine,” Cel said, taking Barnes’s hand.
“Lemonade‘s ready,” Hamid announced, handing out glasses.
The group sat at the table, eating and laughing with each other and reminiscing about old times, Carter waking up some time later and joining them.
“Azu, I have a question and I don’t want to sound weird,” Carter said hesitantly, “But why’d you want to have a kid in the first place?”
Azu frowned. “Well, it certainly wasn’t my plan to start my family like this ,” she gestured to the empty house. “But I’ve always wanted a family and Aphrodite decided now was the time.” She rubbed her belly. “The father is still in the picture and he and I are seeing where things go.We decided not to accelerate the relationship just because of the baby. Just taking it like a normal relationship.”
“I think it’s wonderful,” Barnes said, “Family’s a good thing to have. I’ve certainly liked having one.”
"Damn right, you have." Carter said, slinging his arm over Barnes's shoulder. "Do you know what it's like to live with these two? Constantly snogging."
"Oh you say that as if you were excluded!" Cel laughed.
Azu laughed, “They really like the sound of your voice, Cel,”
“Hey, come on!” Hamid said to the baby, “I’ve been here for a month and you don’t give me so much as a wiggle!”
“Oh come off it,” Azu laughed. “They like you plenty. They always kick for you.”
“Yes, too hard. I’m afraid they’re telling you something.”
Barnes looked like he wanted to ask a question, but wasn’t saying anything.
“What’s on your mind, James?” Azu asked gently. She knew he needed a bit of a push sometimes.
He squirmed slightly, “C-could I feel?”
Azu smiled, and nodded, motioning for him to sit next to her.
James put his hand on her belly looking very excited. He exchanged happy glances with his partners.
There was a small kick around where he had placed his hand.
“Oh, they’re saying hello,” Azu smiled. He nodded, sitting back by Cel and taking their hand. Cel gave him a happy look that said, ‘We can talk a bit more about this later.’
Howard giggled like he was keeping a secret and James elbowed him.
Azu looked from Cel to Barnes to Carter and smiled. It didn’t take too much thought to piece together what was going on inside their heads.
Azu’s muscles suddenly tightened. She’d been dealing with these sorts of false contractions for about a week but they still scared her every time.
“As much fun as we’re having, I think I ought to go lay down for a little bit,”
“Oh yes of course. Do you need any help?” Cel asks.
“No. No. Just a bit of a lay down. The three of you can get settled.”
Azu stood, walking towards her room, and Hamid followed. Before he left, he turned back to them,
“Your beds are already made and everything, and there’s extra supplies in here and in the bathroom if you need it!”
“Thank you, Hamid.” Barnes said, wrapping his arms around Cel and the three of them went into the guest rooms. There were two beds, but one was clearly big enough for all three of them.
“This is perfect,” Carter said, flopping down on the bed,
“You already tried it,” Barnes laughed, following him and flopping down next to him. Cel sat down on the edge of the bed.
“Look, I’m working my arse off,”
“I know you are dear.” James said, kissing his forehead.
Cel came and sat beside him. “How are you doing, love?”
He sighed, “Oh you know me... just thinking thoughts,”
“...Do you want to share any of those thoughts?” Cel said, running a hand through James’s hair.
“I kinda think I want a kid.”
“Knew it. “ Carter said, his face in his pillow
“Hey—“ he sighed, refraining from slapping Carter, “I’ve just... always sort of had that thought in the back of my head. Never thought I’d be in a place in my life to actually do it.”
Cel nodded intently, listening to every word he had to say.
“Would you wanna carry them, dear?”
Barnes ran a hand through his hair. “As dysphoric as it would make me, yeah I think I do.”
“We’d probably have to take some time off the boat.” Cel said, rolling on to their back.
“We can stay at my place in London!” Carter suggested.
Barnes smiled widely. “I love you both so much.”
“We love you too.” Cel kissed him tenderly.

Chapter Text
When Oscar and Zolf had received the letter from Azu, they didn’t think much of it. However, a few days later when Wilde read it and nearly yelled “Oh my god,” from the other room, Zolf got the idea that it might have been something important.
He came bursting in. “She’s pregnant!”
Zolf blinked. “I’m sorry what?”
“Azu is having a baby, Zolf, that’s what the letter was about!”
Zolf’s eyes went wide with realization, “Oh shit! That’s amazing!”
“She says that she’d like us to come visit sometime soon,” he said, reading from the letter.
“Well, what are we waitin’ for? Orcs don’t stay pregnant long.”
Oscar frowned. “Are you saying you want to leave now?”
“It probably took that letter a month to get here, so I mean... No time like the present, right?”
Before Oscar and Zolf knew it, they were on the long trip to Kenya. It wasn’t as easy as it used to be to travel long distances, but they were willing to do it for their friend.
But soon they were standing on the doorstep.
Oscar knocked on the door and to their surprise, Hamid opened it.
“Hi Oscar! Hi Zolf!” Hamid said, jumping in for a hug.
“Oh! Hello!” Oscar said, accepting the surprise hug,
“Hey Hamid,” Zolf replied, looking sort of uncomfortable but accepting the hug nonetheless.
“Fancy seeing you here, Hamid.” Oscar said happily. “Come to help Azu into motherhood?”
Hamid nodded. “Been here almost 2 months. It’s getting close.”
“Oh wow,” Zolf said as Hamid ushered them in, “That’s great! I’m glad we’re here in time.”
“Hi!” Azu called as she waddled towards the door to greet them. It was admittedly strange to see their friend who used to wear full plate armor wearing a long gauzy dress and very pregnant.
“Oh hello, Azu!” Oscar said, very excited. “You look incredible. You’re glowing!”
Azu laughed. “Why thank you. I certainly don’t feel as pretty as I did at the beginning.”
“Oh hush, you look lovely,” he hugged her, forgetting how lovely her hugs felt.
“How are you feeling, Azu?” Zolf asked. No matter how long you run a pub, the healer never quite leaves you.
Azu smiled “Gigantic. You guys got here right in time. I’m due in 3 days.”
“That’s amazing!” Zolf said, setting his bag down, “Don’t let us keep you on your feet, let’s go sit down.”
Azu seemed rather relieved, “Thank you,” she laughed, leaving them into the sitting room, “It’s so wonderful to see you both,”
“You too. Was a bit of a surprise to read your letter.”
Zolf immediately moved to the kitchen. “You want me to make dinner? You definitely shouldn’t be on your feet right now.”
Azu laughed. It was funny to see Zolf fussing, especially over her.
“Don’t worry about it right now, Zolf, let’s visit for a little bit. But if you’re offering that would be really helpful,”
Hamid pouted jokingly, “I can’t even reach the stove so I'm not sure you’ll be able to either,”
Azu sighed, “That was the downside to getting this place, I’ll admit.”
Wilde laughed. “The man is proficient enough with a step ladder. But she’s right. We’ve been traveling for days. Come sit.”
Zolf came and sat beside Wilde.
“So,” Azu said. “Tell me about the wedding plans.”
“We were kinda hoping you’d officiate, but you’re gonna have a baby so maybe we should find-“
“No, no, absolutely not. I’m going to officiate.”
Oscar laughed, “I told you she wasn’t going to take that for an answer.”
They all laughed. Azu stopped, wincing.
Everyone’s faces fell. “Are you okay, Azu?” Hamid asked.
Azu felt her face get hot. She’d been having what she assumed were irregular false contractions since she had woken up and hadn’t thought to tell Hamid. This one was rather close to the last one, and a bit more painful than they had been... Okay, a lot more painful.
“I…I think we may need to go to the clinic. I think it’s time.”
Wilde went bright white. “W-what?”
Zolf elbowed him in the ribs,
“Really?” Hamid asked, looking both excited and anxious. He offered his hand to her which she graciously took,
“Yes, I think so… I guess it came on a lot quicker than I was imagining… Ow.”
“Alright, then we’ll head there now,” Hamid said, staying surprisingly calm.
“Luckily we’re packed to go, right?” Azu said.
“Let us help you.” Zolf said.
“No no it’s gonna be hours you guys stay and get situated.” Azu assured them.
Hamid went up the stairs to grab the bag she had packed, but considering it was about the size of him and certainly the same weight, Azu gave Wilde a look that said ‘go give him a hand.’
Wilde chuckled and ran to help. As they came back into the room, Osacr moved to Azu and placed a hand on her shoulder, “We’ll come and help you guys get settled then we’ll come back and get cleaned up and then we’ll be there to help.”
“Seems like a fair trade,” Hamid said, walking back over to Azu, “Are you sure you’re alright?”
She laughed, sounding a bit nervous, “I’m probably in labour, Hamid, I’m not sure if ‘alright’ is the word I’d use... I-I’m scared.”
Hamid took her hand. “Azu, you’re going to be alright. I know it’s scary and it’s gonna hurt but you’re gonna have your baby soon!”
She smiled, wrapping her arms around him and squeezed him tight.
“You’re right. It’s gonna be alright.” She suddenly remembered something, “Could you send the letter that’s in the right hand drawer of my desk for me?” she asked Zolf,
“Yea, of course,” he replied,
“Just the one for Cel, James, and Howard. The rest of you are here already,”
Zolf pulled the letter out of the desk. It was addressed in beautiful magenta ink.
“I’ll get this sent.” He said, smiling.
Wilde stepped inside. “I’ve got you a taxi.”
“Thank you,” Azu said, standing slowly, Hamid nearly plastered to her side, “I-it’s not particularly bad yet, Hamid, I’ll be alright.”
“I know, I still really worry.” Hamid.
“Oh, Alicia and the other midwives are gonna have a time with me.”
“Why do you say that?” Oscar said, holding the door for them,
“Well, I trained most of them, this is the ultimate test, right?” she replied.
Oscar laughed before his face fell as Azu gripped her stomach. “Oh gods.”
“Is it starting to get bad?”
Azu nodded, “And it’ll only get worse.”
“It’s alright,” Hamid said, taking her hand again, “I’m here,” She squeezed his hand lightly, “Let’s get you to the clinic.”
———
Azu was all settled in her hospital bed. Alicia, her second in command and a Half-halfling, Half-human woman, was smiling nervously. “You’re about 4 centimeters. Settle in, it’s gonna be while”
Azu sighed, but smiled at them as they walked out of the room. As soon as they left, the facade fell away, and Hamid could see the lines of pain on her face.
“How are you doing, Azu?”
“Ow.” Azu laughed. “I’m so excited to see them but this really hurts.”
Hamid chuckled sadly. “Oh dear.”
She hissed in a breath, squeezing her eyes shut. Her water had inconveniently broken on the way to the room, not only meaning that she was in active labor, but that everything seemed amplified.
Hamid took her hand. “You’ve got this. I believe it. This is just like all those monsters you cleaved.”
Azu laughed before her face twisted in pain again.
“Gods, this hurts,” she whispered, sweat beading on her forehead,
“But you’re already doing so well,” He said, squeezing her shoulder.
“Thank you Hamid.” She said as the pain ebbed away
“Of course.” He said. “I love you.”
Azu made a noise that was half way between a groan and a sigh, “They never really tell you about the nausea that comes with this.”
Hamid kissed her forehead lightly, “I’ll be here the whole time,”
———
Zolf and Wilde sat in the waiting area. Wild fidgeted nervously.
“She’s gonna be fine, Oscar.”
“I know that.”
“Doesn’t look like you do.” Zolf wasn’t used to seeing Wilde outwardly anxious like this. It had been a long night and was now an early morning. Neither of them had gone home, against Azu’s wishes, but she didn’t need to know that.
“It’s just been so long.”
“These things take time.”
“I know, I'm just worried.”
The door to the waiting room opened behind them. They both whipped around to see Hamid, looking rather rumpled and exhausted but incandescently happy.
“She's here!” He called, running in. “She’s here and she’s beautiful.”
Oscar and Zolf smiled at each other, warmth spreading through the room.
“A little girl?”
Hamid nodded vigorously.
“C-Can we come back and meet her?” Zolf asked sheepishly.
“Of course!” Hamid was running solely on adrenaline. He sprinted off.
“Sir, don’t run in the clinic!” A nurse called after him.
“I’m so sorry!” he squeaked, slowing down. Zolf caught up to him,
“Hey, Hamid, could you take a deep breath for me?”
Hamid did, calming himself down, “Thank you,” he laughed.
“Of course,” Zolf said, patting him on the shoulder, “Show us to the room, alright?”
“Yeah of course!” Hamid led them to Azu’s room and slowly pushed it open. “Azu. Zolf and Wilde are here to see you and little Sasha.”
Both Wilde and Zolf felt as if they’d been punched in the gut for a moment. She’d named her Sasha.
“They can come in!” Azu’s voice was destroyed and sounded exhausted but so so happy.
They stepped inside slowly. Azu lay in bed, looking so very tired but glowing with joy. In her arms she was holding the smallest Orc either of them had ever seen.
Little Sasha looked so comfortable cradled in the strong arms of her mother, wrapped in a soft pink blanket and matching pink onesie and knit hat. Dark curls poked out of the edges of the hat. She had her hands clasped on Azu’s arm and her eyes closed.
“Oh, Azu, she’s gorgeous.” Oscar said, walking towards the bed.
Azu beamed. “Isn’t she?” She looked completely happy. “She’s a blessing.”
“She really is.” Zolf approached tentatively.
“You can come closer, it’s alright,” Azu said, not looking away from her daughter, “She’s very healthy, she won’t break.”
“Before I forget, Azu,” Zolf said, suddenly remembering, “I sent the letter as a telegram so they’d get it faster. Barnes wired back and they’re already on their way.”
Azu smiled tiredly. Baby Sasha began to squirm a little. “Oh she wants you to hold her.” she held out the baby and slid her into Zolf’s arms.
She was so light . She was clearly healthy and as big as she should be but she was so small and light that Zolf felt as though he was holding sunlight. She opened her eyes slowly and stared back at him. They were a deep dark brown like dark water.
Zolf smiled back, “Hello,” he wasn’t sure how to talk to a baby.
Oscar leaned closer and put a finger to her hand, and she clasped her little fingers around it. They sat like this for a few minutes until Sasha began to fuss again, and Zolf handed her gently back to Azu.
“She’s beautiful.” Oscar whispered.
“Don’t get any ideas.” Zolf whispered, clearly having those ideas.
Azu laughed, “Seems I’m giving everyone baby fever, you should have seen James and Cel when they came to visit.”
Oscar laughed. “Oh, they’d be fantastic parents.”
“I know!”
Hamid poked his head in. “Azu, your brother is here.”
Although the next few hours were filled with visitors, many of which were familiar to even Oscar and Zolf, and a flurry of check ups and measurements, Azu couldn’t be happier. She finally had what she had wished for so long; a family of her own.

Chapter Text
Nearly a month and a half had passed since Sasha’s birth when Azu heard the knock on her door. Hamid had since gone back to work, and Azu had had her hands full with little Sasha, and she couldn’t have been happier.
Azu stood, hardly able to contain her excitement. She walked over to the bassinet next to the big chair where Sasha was still napping peacefully, and then hurried to the door.
Barnes, Cel and Carter stood on the other side, beaming. Cel engulfed them in a hug.
“Hello!” Cel said, breaking off and taking Azu’s hands, “You look so well!”
Azu smiled right back at all of them, “I’m better than I think I’ve ever been. Hello!” She said, looking at the others. James was leaning up against Carter, his face looking rather pale. She frowned for a moment, “Are you alright, James? I don’t mean anything by it but you don’t look too well.”
“Bit of a rough trip but I’m alright,” he said, leaning his head against Carter’s shoulder.
Azu squinted skeptically. “Alright then. Why don’t you come sit down? I’ll get you some seltzer. You’re looking a bit green and that helps with motion sickness.”
The three of them exchanged glances. “Yeah… that sounds good.” Barnes said slowly.
“Let’s see the little buddy!” Cel said excitedly walking into the house.
“Oh yes. She’s asleep right now,” Azu led them to the bassinet. She slowly picked up her baby. “This is Sasha.”
They all stared at her in awe. She was the spitting image of Azu, curls and all, which was made even more clear by the little pink onesie she was wearing.
“Oh she’s lovely.” Barnes looked and sounded like he was going to cry.
Sasha squirmed a little with the motion and opened her eyes, yawning, “Good morning to you too!” Azu said, booping her on the nose.
Barnes definitely was crying now. “She’s just so small.” Carter moved to his side and held his hand.
“Would you like to hold her Cel?” Azu said, walking over to them,
“Yes! I’d love to!” Cel said, and Azu gently handed her to them.
Cel took the baby and Carter wrapped his arms around Barnes.
“Sorry for all this, I’m just sleep deprived from the trip,” he laughed, brushing away his tears.
There it was again. Cel and Carter exchanged glances. The kind of glances you exchange when you know someone lying.
“Well, okay then.”
They turned their attention back to Sasha, who babbled a bit.
“Oh hello!” Howard said, moving to Cel’s other side to get a better look at her.
“She’s so scrumptious, I could just eat her up!” Cel exclaimed.
“She is. Speaking of which, why don’t we have something to eat?”
———
Azu was awoken later that night by the quiet cries of her daughter. She checked the clock, which read 1:00 am. Not too terrible. She scooped her daughter up and after realizing that she wasn’t hungry, Azu knew all her daughter needed was something to soothe her back to sleep.
Rocking her slowly and singing softly, Azu paced back and forth. “Sleep my little dear.” She muttered. Sasha was still very fussy. The bathroom was a good idea. Running water would help her sleep
As she walked towards the bathroom, it turned out that all she needed was a change of scenery, and her baby calmed.
As Azu walked towards the bathroom, she saw that the door was cracked open and the light was on.
Whoever was in there seemed like they weren’t having a particularly good time. “Hello?” A voice came from behind the door,
“O-ugh-occupied.”
James’s voice came through the door. He sounded rough. She knew they were hiding something , and it appeared to be this.
“I’ll be right back, okay?” She said, walking down the hallway as quickly as she could without disturbing Sasha. She laid her daughter back in her crib, and being the good kid she was, she closed her eyes and went back to sleep. Azu kissed her forehead quickly and rushed back to the bathroom, knocking lightly on the door.
“James? James are you alright? Can I come in?”
“I-I’d rather you didn’t. I’m nearly done.”
“Alright. Let me know when it’s alright to come in.”
After a few moments, the sound of the retching came through the wall, making Azu’s heart pang with sympathy. After another few moments, after everything seemed to be taken care of, he spoke again,
“S-sorry...you c-can come in now.”
Azu pushed it open slowly. James was leaning against the wall, his head back. “They said it would be bad, but I didn’t know they meant this bad.”
Azu sat beside him. “I’m sorry James. Are you ill?”
“Not exactly. No.”
Something clicked in Azu’s mind. She had attributed his slight change in posture to the exhaustion, but she remembered that he had been wearing looser clothes than he normally did. Azu also realized that James hadn’t eaten much dinner and even though Azu wasn’t drinking yet, she had offered the three of them something after dinner. While Carter and Cel had accepted, he had declined and gone straight to bed, looking a bit pale again.
Oh.
“You’re not…”
“I am in fact.”
Azu’s heart warmed, “Oh, James, congratulations.”
He smiled, laughing slightly, “That’s why it took us so long to get here. We had to be more careful because, you know… baby.” he shifted slightly, pressing a hand to his stomach, “Being on the ship made me too sick.”
“Oh dear. Would you like some tea? I have some specifically for morning sickness.”
James hung his head. “Yeah that would be nice.”
“Is it alright if I go?” Azu asked,
James’s face went pale again, “C-could you stay for just a minute,” he leaned back over the toilet, “Don’t wanna be alone yet.”
Azu placed her hand on his backs “it’s alright, James. Let it out.”
He gagged and Azu’s heart squeezed with sympathy. He didn’t have much to lose. After a moment when he had finished, he leaned back against the wall, shaking slightly, “Gods, this is really kicking my ass. It always hits at night, I’m losing a lot of sleep.”
There was a little knock at the door and Carter poked in. “Did it happen again?”
James nodded.
“Oh sweetheart.” Carter came and sat beside him
Barnes put his head in Carter’s lap, “I’d blame you but this kid is Cel’s.”
“Only by genetics,” Carter rubbed his hands through his hair. “So I guess Azu knows now?”
Azu nodded, “I’m going to go get that tea for you now, alright?”
They both nodded. Azu got up to make the tea, stepping out just as Cel came out of the guest room. “Oh shit, did he get sick again?”
“He did. Also, congratulations!”
Cel face palmed, “Gods, I forgot we hadn’t told you... I suppose he did since you said that and everything.”
“He did.” Azu paused. “When did we all grow up?”
“I don’t know,” Cel laughed, “I’m really happy about this. I’ve never had… any of my own, you know?”
From the bedroom, Sasha began to cry again. "Shit." Azu said,
"I'll go help her." Cel said. "You know where the tea bags are."
Azu laughed, then paused, “Were you listening through the wall?”
“...Maybe.”
———
The next morning everyone slept late. Azu did a few morning meditations while Sasha fed and had dinner prepped and ready before Barnes popped his head out, "I smell eggs and toast."
“You do indeed!” Azu said, dishing up a plate for him, “I’m glad you’re hungry.”
“Me too. Everything smells really good.”
"That enhanced sense of smell can be a blessing and a curse."
Barnes nodded, sitting down at the table. "Yeah, I can't even handle Carter's usual cologne anymore."
“So talk to me,” Azu said, leaning up against the counter, “How far along are you?”
“‘bout 4 months, actually.”
"Oh! That's not too far, right?"
Barnes nodded. "Morning sickness should be going away soon. It's getting better."
Worry seeped into Azu’s chest, "That's better?"
“Gods, yes,” He said, running a hand through his hair, “You should have seen me when we tried to sail. I could barely move. Scared the hell out of Cel and Howard.”
"Oh dear that's awful." She poured him a cup of tea.
He sipped it. "Thanks. It's been rough."
“I had a relatively easy pregnancy, I almost feel a little guilty,” Azu handed him his cup of tea,
“You don’t have to...” He looked out the window, “The dysphoria’s been the worst honestly. Doctors aren’t the most understanding.”
"I honestly can’t imagine. I'd offer to be your midwife if I wasn't so far away."
Barnes took a big bite of eggs. "I really wish you could."
“Why not!” Carter said, walking into the room, his hair rumpled from sleep, “I’ve taken the rest of the time off of work and so has Cel!”
"We don't want to intrude on Azu, especially with the new baby."
"There's plenty of space and I could use the help!"
James’s eyes lit up, but he sat back, “We can talk more about it later. Right now let’s just have breakfast,”
“Are we having breakfast?” Cel said, walking into the kitchen. They kissed both of their partners on the cheek and then Barnes on the stomach.
“You feeling better, hun?” Cel asked, wrapping their arms around his shoulders,
“I am,” he said, kissing them on the cheek then taking the last bite of his breakfast. He stood up to take his plate to the sink but went back down into his chair, pressing a hand to his forehead,
“James, are you okay?” Carter said, at his side in a second. He nodded,
“Just dizzy... they’ve really got it out for me today.”
"You should lay down. Spend the say in bed."
Barnes made a face. "I'll go mad."
"No, you won't, we'll be here." Azu said. "I'm still on maternity leave and— " She broke off as Sasha began to scream.
“Speak of my angel and she shall appear,” Azu said walking off. All three could hear Sasha immediately calm as Azu picked her up out of the bassinet. James pressed a hand to his stomach, smiling up at his partners.

Chapter Text
Hamid felt like it had been years since he had last seen Azu, when in reality it had only been about 3 months and he was extremely excited to be back to see her. He was even more excited because in Azu’s recent letters, she had mentioned that Barnes, Cel, and Carter were staying with her long term. She hadn’t mentioned why,and seemed a bit concerned about James’s health, but any excuse to see them was good enough for him.
He was well acquainted with the route to her villa and after a few days' journey, he was at her doorstep.
Carter answered the door. When he saw Hamid, his eyes went wide. “Shit!”
“What?” Hamid said, “Is everything okay?”
Azu walked up behind Carter, “What’s— Oh! Hamid!” she said, pushing past Carter, scooping up Hamid into a big hug.
“Hamid’s here?” Cel called. They came to join them all on the stoop. “It’s good to see you.”
“It’s good to see you too. Is everyone alright? Howard, you seemed worried.”
Carter face palmed. “It’s nothing I’m just stupid.”
Cel’s eyes lit up, “Howard did you ever send the letters?”
Carter looked at Cel, utterly defeated.
“What letter?”
“What’s going on?” James joined them, very clearly pregnant. Hamid’s jaw fell open.
“Oh shit, did we not send the letters?” He said, his ears getting very hot.
“No, you didn’t but it’s okay! Oh my god, congratulations!” Hamid’s voice was getting very high.
“Come in, come in. It’s going to rain!” Azu ushered everyone inside. “I’m so happy you're here Hamid. Would you like some hot chocolate?”
“That would be lovely! Is Sasha awake?” He asked ask they all sat down,
“She’ll be awake soon, she’s been asleep for a while. Very tiring morning of learning that she could through things.” Azu laughed.
“Love that little girl.” Barnes said, sitting heavily.
“How are you feeling, James?” Hamid asked.
Barnes shrugged. “Okay. We’ve had some complications so I’m basically on house arrest.”
“Oh gosh, I’m sorry about that. That must have been scary, but I’m glad things are a bit better now.”
Cel laughed, “He seems to be particularly good at scaring the shit out of us,” they joked.
“Sorry,” he muttered. Carter kissed him on the cheek.
“No apologies. You’re doing a very hard thing.”
Hamid smiled at the little family that sat opposite him, “How come you all decided to stay with Azu?”
James took a deep breath, “Doctors everywhere else aren’t very good with a non-female identifying person having a kid,” he fiddled with the end of his shirt, “And Azu knows me... a lot less painless on that front.”
Hamid's heart hurt a little. “I can’t imagine.” He suddenly remembered something. “Oh that reminds me! I wanted to show you my girlfriend!”
Azu’s face lit up, completely shocked “A girlfriend?! Hamid, you didn’t mention this in our letters!”
“I wanted it to be a surprise,” He took out a picture of a smiling young halfling woman, “This is Heba,”
She had flowing black hair and seemed to be laughing. “She’s a ballet dancer who trained in France.” Love and affection dripped from his voice. He showed another picture, this one an action shot of her dancing in flowing blue costume.
“She’s from Cairo, though! She was visiting home and we met in the main library after a seminar.”
“Oh Hamid, that’s wonderful!” Cel said, looking at the photos, and then handing them to James.
Hamid beamed with happiness. “What about you?!? You’re having a baby!”
Barnes rubbed his swollen belly. “Yeah. We are.”
“Do you guys have names in mind?”
“We’ve talked about it a bit and I think if it’s a girl we’ll name her Antonia,” Cel explained,
“That was my mum’s name,”
“And if it’s a boy, Thomas, after James' father.” Carter added.”
“That’s so lovely,” Hamid said, “I’m so happy for you all.”
“Thank you,” Barnes said, leaning against Cel, “I don’t think I was quite built for this but I can’t wait to meet them.”
Azu stood, “I’ll get everyone some drinks and then see if Sasha’s ready to wake up,”
Barnes rested his head on Carter’s shoulder. “Can we have chocolate milk?”
Azu smiled. “Of course, James.”
“Been craving it for days. It’s all they seem to want.” He said, mostly to his belly.
The group sat and talked with each other about new relationships, work and everything else under the sun. Soon, Sasha joined the group and quickly became the life of the party.
After a while, James slowly started to fade out of the conversation. Cel noticed that he had started to look very pale, “Honey, are you feeling alright?”
“N-Not really.” He whispered. “Dizzy. It’s all getting a bit much.”
Cels' heart clenched. “Oh love, let’s go lay down,”
He grabbed on to Cel's arm as he tried to stand, “N-no, I need a minute.” He squeezed his eyes closed against the dizziness.
“Is everything okay?” Hamid asked, noticing what was going on.
“I’m not feeling too well.”
“Oh dear.” Hamid said.
“This has been happening a lot.” Carter said as he came over to support his other side. “That's why he’s supposed to be on bed rest.”
“M’sorry,” James said quietly, clearly miserable.
“No, no, hun, it’s okay,” Cel said gently, “I know it’s hard.”
“It’s almost certainly his blood pressure,” Azu said. “Let’s get you back into bed.”
“Don’t stop socializing because of me.”
“Nonsense. We can join you.”
Cel looked to Hamid, “Could you get some water?”
Cel and Carter helped their partner into their bed,
“I’m sorry,” He said again, leaning back,
“No, no, none of that.” Cel said, kissing his forehead.
Azu followed them into the room and Hamid was close behind. James wrapped himself in the duvet, clearly embarrassed.
“Not built for this,” he muttered, clutching himself.
“I’m so sorry James,” Azu said, bouncing Sasha on her hip.
Carter sat in front of Barnes, and put his hands on his shoulder, “Look at me.” he looked up slowly, “I’m proud of you and you’re doing so well. It’s going to get better, I promise you.”
The corners of Barnes’s mouth turned up in a small smile.
“Thank you Howard,” he said. “I love you. All of you.”
Sasha babbled in response. “We love you too.” Azu said.
James smiled again, “I think I just need a distraction.”
Cel was struck with an idea. They pulled out a pack of playing cards, “Go-fish, anyone?”
“Sounds fun!” Hamid said, returning with water and a full tea set for everyone. He passed around mugs.”
“Thank you, Hamid,” Azu said as Sasha reached for the mug she was holding, “Nope, not for you.”
As Cel dealt the cards, there was a knock at the front door. Azu stood, “I’ll go get that, just deal me in next round,”
Passing the baby to Howard, Azu made her way to the door. An orcish man stood at the doorway. “A letter for a miss Azu?” He held out a piece of paper written in a script she recognized.
“Thank you so much,” she tipped the mail man and waved goodbye to him, closing the door. She recognized Oscar’s handwriting and she opened the letter and began to read,
Azu,
I hope everything is well with you and with James. I’m writing to say that we will be coming back to visit soon like we had planned, but there will be another with us.
Rather unexpectedly, we have adopted a daughter, Johanna. It would be more appropriate to say that she found us, but it's a long story that won’t fit in a letter. It seems that we’re all taking the route of parenthood.
The rest of the letter laid out when they would be arriving, but Azu didn’t have time to comprehend it before she was rushing back into the bedroom.
“Amazing news!” She called coming back into the room. “Oscar and Zolf have adopted a child.”
Everyone looked up from Sasha who had her feet in her mouth. “What?”
“You’ve got to be joking,” Carter said, staring at her,
“I do not believe that for a second,” James said, half joking.
“You can read the letter if you want, I’m just as shocked as you are,” Azu said as Cel plucked the letter out of her hands.
They scanned the letter, their eyes growing wide, “Nope, this is definitely Oscar’s handwriting and that’s definitely what this says.”
“They say her name is Johanna.” Azu said, taking back her fussy daughter. “They don’t say how old, but they’ll be arriving in the next two months so we’ll find out I suppose.”
“Maybe she’s a bit older,” James said, “I feel like they would have mentioned it if she was a baby, right?”
“Probably?” Hamid said, “This is all happening so fast, isn’t it. I suppose once one of you went, you all did.” They all laughed.
“Well I’ve always been a trendsetter.” Azu said, kissing her baby’s tummy.
Sasha giggled and wriggled around a little bit, bringing a smile to everyone’s face.
The group played card games and talked into the night until Cel and Barnes fell asleep next to each other.

Chapter Text
2 months later
Wilde held Johanna’s hand as they made their way up the walk to Azu’s front door, Zolf in his chair to their right. Johanna looked up at him, the little halfling’s eyes wide with anticipation.
“Do you remember who everyone is?” Wilde asked, quizzing her again,
“C’mon, I already said who they were.” she said, tugging at the cuff of her sweater, “Ms. Azu is the orc lady, and Sasha is the baby.”
“Do you remember who any one else is?” Zolf asked, knowing what the answer was going to be,
“...No.”
Wilde laughed. He didn’t expect a 6 year old to be able to remember or even care about the names of six total strangers that she had never met before.
“There’s James, he’s the man who’s having the baby. Then there’s Cel. They've got the goggles. Then there’s Howard.”
“He’s got the mustache.” Jo said, smiling.
Oscar laughed, “That’s right. And last there’s—“
“Hamid,” she said, a little unsure of herself, “he’s a halfling. Like me.”
“Good job, Jo,” Zolf said as they reached the porch. Jo started to look more and more worried.
“It’s okay, sweetie.” Oscar said. “Everyone is gonna love you. “
“Mhm.” She said, beginning to cower behind Zolf.
“Hey,” Zolf said, turning around a bit in his chair, “Everyone we’re seeing today is safe, alright? I promise.”
She didn’t look like she believed him, but nodded. Oscar knocked on the door.
Azu opened the door, Sasha clinging to her. “Hello! You made it!” Azu hugged them both. Sasha giggled happily, recognizing her uncles.
“Hello!” Oscar smiled, “This is Johanna,” he gestured to her, but she wasn’t there, but was hiding behind Zolf’s chair, looking at Azu with wide eyes, “It’s okay, come say hello,” he said in Irish, holding out his hand.
She slowly came out from behind the chair. She shook out her tight red curls and clung to Oscar.
“Hello,” Azu said gently, “I’m Azu. And this is Sasha.”
Jo gave a small smile, and waved. She looked at Sasha and her eyes went wide.
“Would you all like to come inside? Whenever you’re ready.”
Jo stepped cautiously into the villa. Zolf and Oscar walked in after her. Barnes and Cel were sitting on the couch as Carter was cutting slices of cheese and apple.
“Oh hi!” Cel said standing up and starting to walk forward when they stopped themselves, seeing how scared Jo looked.
“Hey, Cel,” Zolf said, rolling himself next to Johanna.
“This is Jo.”
“Hi little buddy.” Cel’s voice changed, becoming soft and comforting.
She waved again, coming out from behind Oscar a little more. Just then, Hamid walked back into the room, “Oh!” His eyes widened upon seeing her, “H-hello!”
“Hi,” she shrank away. “There’s a lot of people,” she whispered in Irish.
“Would you like me to hold you?” He asked back.
She nodded.
Wilde picked her up and held her tight. After she felt safe and secure, she turned back to the group.
Oscar pointed to Barnes, who now looked different from the last time he had seen him, “That’s James,”
James waved a her, smiling softly. Jo waved back, her own smile widening. She seemed to immediately like him.
Carter came over, the plate of food in his hand. “Hi Jo, I’m Howard. “ He offered her a piece of apple. “Would you like some?”
Jo quickly snatched a piece of apple off of the plate and stuffed it in her pocket. Oscar laughed slightly, “What do you say?”
Jo looked at him for a moment, “Thank you,” she said quietly.
Oscar beamed. Azu came back, holding Sasha. “Johanna would you like to hold Sasha and get to know her?”
Jo looked from Oscar to the baby then back to Oscar. She nodded.
“Is sitting on the couch alright?” Oscar asked her,
“Can I sit by James?” She asked, looking at James for his approval.
“Of course sweetheart, “ James said, patting the spot beside him. Oscar set her beside him and Azu followed with the baby.
“Alright Jo, you’ve got to support her head.” She said making sure Jo was holding her correctly.
Sasha opened her eyes and stared at Jo in silence and Jo stared back.
Everyone watched intently. It was a beautiful moment. That was until little Sasha spit up. Johanna gasped and stayed quiet for a moment before bursting into tears.
“I-I-broke her,” Jo choked out.
“No no, sweetheart, you didn’t hurt her. I just fed her and this happens after you feed a baby.” Azu took back Sasha and Oscar wrapped Jo in his arms.
Everyone was trying very hard to hold back their laughter even though Jo was very clearly quite upset,
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.” Jo was still nearly inconsolable.
“It’s okay, pumpkin, you didn’t do anything wrong. Can we take a breath?” Jo took a deep breath in time with Oscar and calmed slightly.
Oscar kisses her gently on the cheek.
“You look awfully tired, Joey? Zolf said rolling up to her. “Wanna like to take a little kip?
She nodded. Before she went, Azu knelt down with Sasha in her arms, “See, Jo? She’s alright, you didn’t do anything!”
Jo held out her hand and Sasha grasped for it, “I’m sorry,” Jo whispered.
Sasha stared at her for a moment before locking her dead in the eyes and beginning to laugh.
Jo began to giggle slightly, eventually burying her face in the curve of Oscar’s next again.
“Yeah it’s nap time.” Oscar whispered. “You guys catch up. I’ll be back.” And he carried his daughter to the guest room.
“Zolf, she’s precious!” Hamid said, moving to give him a hello hug.
“I’m just glad she wasn’t too scared... she’s not exactly a people person.”
“Understandable.” James said, rubbing his stomach.
“How are you doing, James?” Zolf said.
James shrugged. “Better, but getting real uncomfortable.”
“That’s pretty understandable,” Zolf said. He looked as if he were about to pop, “You’re nearly there, right? I’ve sort of lost track of time.”
“Yeah, I’m due on Saturday, but Azu says it might be longer..”
Zolf’s heart skipped. It was Monday. “That’s so soon.”
“Yup.”
Cel wrapped an arm around their partner, “We are all very anxious around here, your arrival is welcome.”
“I’m glad we’re not imposing,” Wilde said, accepting a glass of water from Azu. “Johanna was so excited to come see everyone.”
“She’s so sweet,” James smiled, “Do you know her story?”
Wilde smiled sadly, “Yes, we do. She came to us in a very unconventional way.”
Everyone listened very closely, “She actually tried to pickpocket me in Ireland.” Zolf laughed.
“Zolf took one look at her and immediately fell in love.” Wilde half-joked.
Zolf was rosy. It was obvious he deeply loved that kid. “It took us a bit but she trusted us enough to come home with us.”
Azu’s eyes went wide, “Was she living on the streets? She’s so young.”
Wilde nodded again. The room was quiet for a moment.
“I’m so glad you found her,” Hamid said, breaking the silence.
“We are too.” Oscar said quietly. “The adoption was legalized right before we left. We’re officially her fathers.”
“That’s so wonderful.” Carter had a big smile on his face, “You beat us to it!” he joked.
“Barely,” James laughed.
James shifted and felt the baby squirm and kick. “They’re getting impatient. They want out.”
Carter’s eyes went wide, “Like right now?”
James laughed, “No, dumbass, I think I’d be a little more concerned.”
“You’re getting excited to come out, aren’t you little buddy? Cel said before peppering James’s bump with kisses.
The both laughed, prompting Sasha to laugh as well.
————
After a while, Carter and Hamid left to go to the market. Cel went back to building the new crib and Azu and Wilde decided to take the kids to the park. This left Barnes and Zolf alone in the parlor sipping their tea
“It’s really really good to see you, Zolf,” James said, breaking the silence
“It’s really good to see you too. How are you holding up?” Zolf asked,
“I’m both happier and more terrified I’ve ever been in my life.”
“Yeah…me too.” Zolf looked down into his swirling drink. “You’d think saving the world would be scarier than having a kid. “
“At least you don’t have push one out of you,” james joked
“Gods, don’t say it like that,” Zolf said, laughing,
“How else am I supposed to say it?” he was laughing now as well, “The way they talk about it in all those books Cel and I read is too flowery and weird.”
“I can imagine,” Zolf was quiet for a few minutes. “Did you ever think we’d be here?”
“How do you mean?”
“Parenthood. Settling down, in a sense. Just isn’t how we used to live. I didn’t think I’d ever be in a place to do this, but it makes me so happy.”
James smiled, “I didn’t think I’d be here either, if I’m honest. Thought I was gonna live and die in the Navy, but look at me now.”
Zolf chucked. “It’s really something, ain’t it? I was sure fatherhood wasn’t something I wanted. The I locked eyes with that little girl and…”
“I think that’s wonderful.” Barnes said, taking another sip from his tea, “Johanna seems like she really trusts you.”
“That was well earned. She’s been through some shit, that kid. “ Zolf said. “She deserves a good place to rest. “
“I’m glad you could give her a safe place to grow up.”
“I am too.” Zolf said quietly, staring out of the window as his mind went to an old friend.
————
Dinner was delicious. Azu insisted on making it herself and while Zolf protested in jest, he was happy to eat a good meal he didn’t cook. Johanna ate her fill, still not quite understanding that food was no longer going to be a scarce resource in her life.
The winter sun had already set by the time they had finished dinner After dinner, everyone went back to talking and laughing in the sitting room. Jo, who had decided to sit on the couch in between James and Oscar, looked up at James, looking like she wanted to ask him something. He turned, noticing her gaze.
“Hi there,” he said gently
“Hello,” she said, matching his tone.
She stared down at his belly, watching as the baby kicked. She saw their little foot press through the skin and she jumped.
Barnes contained a laugh.
“Do you want to to touch? You can, if you like” he said.
She did so gently, and didn’t immediately pull away when the baby kicked again. She took her hand away and smiled, “Cool,” She muttered under her breath.
Not much more time passed until Jo was nodding off, curled up in Wilde’s lap.
“I think it might be bedtime.” Wilde said to zolf.
Zolf nodded. “Yeah I’m pretty beat myself. It’s been a long day, huh Joey?”
Jo nodded.
“I think we’re gonna turn in now, everyone. Can you say goodnight?” Wilde said to the group, then to Jo,
“Goodnight,” She said, and everyone else echoed her.
Wilde scooped her up and carried her bridal style into the bedroom. Once they were all inside, Oscar laid her down gently on the bed. He paused a moment before giving her a raspberry on her stomach. Jo laughed that high screaming laughing only children can do.
One Jo had washed her face and brushed her teeth, she climbed back into the bed in between her two fathers, and snuggled in, falling asleep nearly instantaneously. Oscar tuned to Zolf, who was still sitting up, reading.
“Today went well, didn’t it?”
“Definitely better than expected.” Zolf said, not looking up from his book.
Wilde bend down and kissed his daughter’s red curls. “We’re gonna be here for James’s delivery too.”
“I suppose so... I guess we just have good timing,” Zolf laughed quietly, setting the book down and turning the lamp off.
“Good night, Oscar,” Zolf said, kissing his husband and laying down. Oscar switched his own light off, “Goodnight, my loves.”

Chapter Text
Barnes went into labor 3 days early. Of course he did. Nothing about this pregnancy had gone according to plan. Why should this?
This situation came to light when Cel woke up in the middle of the night to find the side of the bed James slept on to be empty. As they sat up and looked around the room, they saw that he was sitting in the chair in the corner of the room, his head in his hands. He groaned softly. They stood quietly, walking over to him, “Hi honey... Can’t sleep?”
“Uh…” James’s breath hitched and he didn’t move. “I…Er… we might have a problem.”
Worried, Carter rolled over and went to stand up, putting his hand on a wet spot on the sheets. “Oh…oh my gods.”
“What?” Cel said, alarm seeping into their voice. As if to show them what was going on, James hissed in a breath, gripping the arm of the chair,
“M-my water broke,” he choked out.
Anticipation and excitement and fear flooded everyone. “Alright okay, we’re heading to the clinic right now.” Carter said, jumping out of bed.
Carter switched on the lights and started going through the closet, getting the bag together.
“Carter, please slow down,” James said, his voice already sounding worn out and overwhelmed, “Everything’s too loud.”
Carter stopped. “Yeah of course. I’ll get you some water, okay?”
James nodded.
Cel called after him, “And get Azu!”
Carter popped his head back in, giving a thumbs up and going the other way down the hall.
As Carter booked it into the kitchen, Azu poked her head out. “Hey can you guys keep it down? I’m trying to- why are you making that face?”
“James is in labor,” He blurted out,
Azu’s face changed immediately, “Shit.”
“We need to get him to the clinic,”
“Uh, guys?” Cel called from back down the hall. “I think you should get in here.”
Azu and Carter ran into the room, and Cel met them at the door,
“What’s going on?” Azu said, immediately switching back to her ‘doctor’ voice.
“T-there’s blood,” They basically whispered it, leading them into the room.
Fear shot through her, and Azu went into doctor mode. “Okay, we go to the clinic. This could be a lot of things, most of them not serious.”
She bent down, looking at Barnes. He was pale and his hairline was damp with sweat, and was working through a contraction,
“S-sorry about the chair.” he whimpered. Azu noticed the bleeding.
“I think we’re farther than we thought, we gotta get you to the clinic now. ”
James looked up at her, his eyes glassy, “This is bad, isn’t it? I thought we did everything right, why is this— gah ,” He doubled over against another contraction, and Azu took ahold of his shoulders,
“James, look at me,” her voice was gentle, but forceful, “Everything is going to be alright. We’re going to take good care of you. You’re both safe. I promise.”
Despite everything, James smiled.
———
Oscar, Zolf and Hamid sat in the waiting room of the clinic with Sasha and Johanna. Sasha was napping in Hamid’s arms and Johanna was sitting quietly on Zolf’s lap, drawing on a small pad of paper.
“Seems like we were just here, doesn’t it?” Hamid said, breaking the anxious silence.
“It does.” Wilde said. He checked his watch. 6 hours. They’d been here 6 hours. Hamid has only arrived with Sasha a couple hours ago, but Zolf and Wilde had been there the whole time.
Jo tugged on Oscar’s sleeve, “Pa? Is Mr. James okay?”
He smiled, “Azu and the other doctors are taking very good care of him, I promise.”
Jo pouted, “But that wasn’t the question I asked!”
Oscar took a breath. “He’s gonna be okay, pumpkin. This is a hard thing he’s doing but you’re gonna have a new cousin soon.”
“Okay.” she said, uncertain but taking the answer.
Sasha woke up and began to cry softly. Hamid bounced her up and down lightly. “I really hope they’re alright in there.”
“Me too”
———
James finally relaxed after one of the worst contractions he’d had so far.
“Th-this is so hard.”
“You’re almost there James!” Azu assured him.
“O-okay,” he did not seem convinced. His whole body felt weak.
Cel leaned close to him, pressing a kiss to his sweat-slick forehead, “We’ve got you, love, I promise.”
“Doesn’t feel good,” he said, completely out of breath. James blinked as if he was trying to get spots from his eyes.
Cels eyes filled with fear. Their breath caught in their throat, “I, uh, I need some space.”
James looked like the last thing he wanted was for them to go, but the nodded, letting go of their hand.
“Cel, what’s—“ Carter started to ask, but they had already gone out of the room. He looked to Azu, who nodded, and he chased after them.
"Cel! What's going on?" Howard said as he caught up to them. He hissed in a breath as he say that they had tears shining in their eyes.
"How, I..." They collapsed on him and sobbed.
He was stunned for a moment, but wrapped his arms around them, “Cel, talk to me, what’s wrong? I hate seeing him in pain too.”
“N-no, no, It’s not that... I mean it is but,” the took a deep breath, “I’m scared.”
Carter kissed them lightly on the cheek. "Scared of what?"
"Scared of losing him. Of losing the baby. What if..." they trailed off. "What if all his pain is for nothing?"
As if to make Cel’s worries worse, they heard James cry out through the door, and eventually soft comforting words from Azu.
Carter looked back at them, “Oh Cel,” he held them close, “Azu is taking care of him. I promise they’ll both be okay. He’s safe, and they’re safe.”
“It’s not just that,” Cel said, slightly calmer, “What if I’m not any good at being a parent?”
Howard's heart broke into pieces. If he'd been honest with himself, he had those same doubts. His parents had been so shitty. What if he fucked his kid up just like his Mum had fucked him up?
Howard took a deep breath. "You're gonna be an amazing parent Cel."
Cel looked at him, and a small smile crept across their face, and they embraced.
“Are you ready to go back in?”
Cel nodded, pushing the door open.
"Perfect timing," Azu said. "It's time to push."
Suddenly very serious, Cel and Cater both took their positions, ready for their child to enter the world.
James looked up at both of them, his exhausted eyes full of fear, “I-I don’t think I can do it,” he nearly whispered.
Carter smiled, “Nonsense,” he kissed his partner’s forehead, “We’re right here. We’ve got you.”
———
Everyone was drifting off to sleep in the waiting room when the door opened, revealing Azu behind it. Everyone jumped awake, looking up at her with wide eyes.
"It's a boy!" She called, joy dripping from her voice. "James is fine and the baby is healthy. He's beautiful!"
Everyone jumped to their feet. Jo, who was fast asleep on the chairs, covered in Wilde's jacket, stirred lightly.
Wilde shook her lightly, “Jo, love, wake up,” She blinked awake, “We’re going to go and see Mr. James now, he had his baby.”
She shot up, sleep abandoned. Together, they followed Azu into the hospital room.
Azu stopped them outside the door, “Before we go in, we just have to be a bit gentle, he had a really difficult labor. You won’t be able to stay long but you’ll be able to visit for long in the next few days.”
Everyone nodded.
Inside, a sight met their eyes that took everyones breath away. James, although very pale, held his son in his arms, looking at him as though he were a precious gem. Carter was crying silently and for once, Cel was completely silent.
James looked up to see the group, “Hello,” he said, his voice nearly completely gone, “This is Thomas.”
Thomas was quite small, but had a head of thick hair that matched James’s and his ears came to a small point at the end. He lay sleeping in his father’s arms.
"Oh wow." Oscar's voice sounded thick and Zolf looked to see tears shining in his eyes.
Zolf quietly took his hand. "He's beautiful, James."
"Papa, why are you crying?" Jo asked. Everyone laughed lightly,
“Sometimes I get emotional over thing like this, pumpkin,” He knelt down next to her, “I’m happy, don’t worry,”
“I can’t see the baby,” she said, motioning for him to pick her up.
Everyone in the room laughed again. Carter walked over, “Do you want me to hold you up so you can see him?”
Jo looked hesitant at first, but eventually nodded yes.
Carter hoisted Jo up into his arms. When she saw Thomas, her eyes went wide. "He's so tiny." she whispered.
"Yup." Cel said, looking happier than they'd ever been before.
Cel sat next to James in the bed, letting him rest his head on their shoulder. Thomas squirmed slightly, but yawned and settled again.
"And everything's alright?" Zolf asked. "I know there were problems."
"As far as we can tell he’s just a bit small," Azu said. "But other than that, happy and healthy."
Zolf nodded, “Congratulations, all of you.”
They looked back to James and Cel and saw that they were both asleep.

Chapter Text
Recovery was a slow process. James spent nearly two weeks in the hospital regaining his strength, then another three in bed with his son at home.
Travel wasn’t possible yet and wouldn’t be for a while, so they remained with Azu, which was just how she preferred it.
Thomas was incredibly well behaved. He cried like any other baby but he slept well and was often happy. His favorite place to sleep was on any of his parents’ chests. The only problem was he didn’t seem to recognize his name. Or any sort of voice.
Azu began to suspect something when she accidentally dropped a frying pan very loudly on the floor. Sasha started screaming but Thomas didn’t even look over.
She knocked on James’s door. He was sitting in bed, feeding Thomas with a bottle. “Hey James. Can we talk about something?”
“Yea, yea, of course. I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something as well,” He patted the bed next to him. After Azu sat down, Thomas looked up at her and smiled, wiggling his arms a bit.
“You can go ahead first,” Azu said, wanting to let James start.
“Alright.” he hesitated, looking down at his son, “... I think Thomas might not be able to hear very well. I feel like I’m overreacting but it’s sort of hard not to see.”
Azu let out a breath. “Yes, that's what I wanted to talk to you about. I think we should go to the clinic to get him screened. He might be deaf.”
“That’s a good idea.” he said, kissing Thomas on the head.
“Are you alright? Do you need anything? I know this might be hard.”
James looked confused, “What? No, no, I’m alright. I just want him to get what he needs, that’s all.”
Azu’s heart fluttered. She’d seen many new parents throw fits when they found out their child might have a disability. It shouldn’t surprise her but it did.
—————
James, Howard and Cel sat in the waiting room of the clinic. Cel was bouncing Thomas on their leg, who made little happy squeaks as they did.
Azu came out into the waiting area, followed by the doctor who specialized in hearing. They both wore blank expressions
“Hello,” the doctor next to Azu, “Your original assumption was correct, the test results show that your son is deaf.”
“Glad I’m not going crazy,” James laughed.
“We aren’t sure if he’s fully deaf, and his deafness may worsen or improve with age, but that’s what we know for sure now.” Azu explained.
Cel took Barnes’s hand. “What’s the best thing we can do?”
“Learn sign. It’s the best way for him to be able to communicate.” The doctor said, “Just be patient with him. Other than the hearing loss, he’s incredibly healthy.”
They all smiled, “Thank you so much,” Carter said.
Carter turned to their son and began to sign. Though Thomas certainly didn’t know what he was saying, he smiled and gurgled happily.
“I didn’t know you knew BSL, Howard.”
“Yeah, I do. I had really bad eye problems as a kid and some of the other kids I went to school with were deaf.” He smiled, “I wanted to make friends, so I learned.”
"Will you teach us?" Cel asked.
"Of course." He took the baby in his arms. "Let's head home." He kissed Thomas on the head.
-----
They began working with sign language with Thomas almost immediately, despite how young he was. James knew it would be a long while before he could properly communicate with his son, but it didn’t matter to him.
They decided going home could wait a little while longer. It would soon be Sasha's first birthday
Even though James asked about a million times if they were overstaying their welcome, Azu assured him that she was more than happy to have them here.
Thomas very much enjoyed spending time with Sasha.
One night, they were all in the living room. Sasha was sitting in the middle of the room building a castle of blocks while Azu knit and James fed Thomas.
Cel sat on the floor with Sasha, trying to help her build something that looked at least a little structurally sound, but Sasha only seemed intent on knocking it down and giggling at the destruction.
After a few moments, Thomas started reaching towards them, trying to wiggle out of James’s arms.
"Oh do you wanna play?" James asked, signing the word 'play'. Thomas giggled and squirmed even more.
Sasha saw him wiggling. "Tom! Tom!"
‘Tom’ was the only discernible word Sasha said other than ‘mama,’ and it made everyone smile every single time it happened. James handed him to Cel, who helped him sit up in their lap.
"Tom!" Sasha scooted closer.
"Can you say Hi, Sash?" Cel asked.
Sasha nodded and did an approximation of the sign for 'hello'
It was a very simple sign, but Cel was very impressed nonetheless at Sasha’s understanding. Thomas replied by picking up a block and putting it in his mouth.
Cel and Sasha both laughed. Sasha took a block and began to show it to Thomas, explaining what it was in a kind of baby babble as if Thomas could understand.
Thomas just sat and watched her, fascinated, still chewing on the block. Carter walked in and laughed,
“That block taste good, buddy?” he said sitting down next to Cel.
Seeing his other daddy, Thomas's eyes lit up and he grabbed for Cater.
"Looks like he wants you, Howie."
He picked him up under his armpits and brought him over to his lap. After a little while, Thomas dropped his block and started nodding off in Howard’s arms.
"Oh it looks like it's naptime."
"For Sasha too." Azu said.
"Mama!" Sasha whined.
Azu raised an eyebrow, “You’re not sleepy?”
Sasha shook her head and yawned. Azu laughed and started helping her daughter clean up the blocks.
By the time they were done cleaning, Thomas was out cold and Sasha was nodding off.
"Mama," Sasha tugged on Azu's sleeve.
"Yes, dear?"
She held up a storybook, asking her to read it.
Azu nodded and took the book and began to read, and by the time she looked up from it, everyone had cuddled up together and fallen asleep.
Azu's heart felt full and happy. Her family, all together.
