Chapter 1: First Time
Chapter Text
Randolph walked Kit to her front door after another lovely dinner together. They had been going to dinner for a few months now. Randolph was always the gentleman seeing her to her door and kissing her goodnight. He was trying not to push his luck by being too forward because he really didn’t want to ruin what they had together.
Their goodnight kisses were beginning to leave the other breathless and craving more, tonight was no different. Randolph’s hands were on either side of her face when he finally released her soft lips. They were still standing so close that they were breathing the same air.
“I- uh- I should be going. Goodnight Kit.” He leaned in and gave her one last gentle kiss on her lips before heading to his car.
“Goodnight Randolph.”
Kit turned to unlock her front door, but was struggling because her hands were shaking. She sighed, tilted her head back and closed her eyes. What were they doing? Were they ready to move their relationship forward? What would happen if they took this next step? Kit took a deep breathe before turning around to see Randolph opening his car door.
“Randolph, wait. Would you-.” Bloody hell, why was this so difficult for her. “Would you like to- um- would you like to come in for a drink?”
Randolph was surprised that she was asking him in and the corner of his mouth started to turn up. They had been taking things slow, neither was ever sure whether it was the right time to make the first move. The last few weeks they had been dancing around each other, but now Kit was asking and he couldn’t deny her.
“Yes, I would love to.” He gave Kit a smirk as he jogged back up the steps to her house. Kit rolled her eyes at his eagerness as she finished opening the door and invited him in.
The night had progressed nicely as they sat on the couch drinking a glass of wine. Kit was worried that things would be awkward between them as the weight of what they were both wanting was hanging in the air. The anticipation was killing Kit. If she was honest, she had thought about this moment a lot lately and she deeply wanted Randolph. She downed the last of her wine before leaning forward to place the empty glass on the coffee table. Before she could change her mind, she turned to look him squarely in the eye.
“Randolph, would you like to stay the night?”
“Yes, absolutely.”
“Someone is a little sure of himself. I just figured that you probably shouldn’t be driving home after another drink.” Kit was teasing him.
“Oh, I- I, we- we don’t. I just thought that- that.”
“I was kidding Randolph, come on.” Kit took his empty wine glass and placed it next to hers before taking his hand. She stood up and pulled him up behind her, then she led him down the hall to her bedroom.
They were barely in the room when Randolph kicked the door closed and pinned her against it. His lips and hands were everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. Kit’s mind was racing, her body on fire, and her heart was beating fast. Why was she so nervous? It wasn’t like she hadn’t had sex before, she has two children for heavens sake. But this was Randolph, her friend, colleague, and man who invaded her thoughts and dreams.
She reached out and started to unbutton his shirt. When the fabric hit the floor, her hands slide up and down his bare chest. He reached behind her and pulled the zipper of her dress down slowly.
“Randolph. I, want, I want to remind you that I’m not that young anymore and I’ve had two children. I hope that you aren’t disappoint-.”
“Stop right there.” Randolph took his hand off the zipper and placed a finger over her mouth. “Kit, you are gorgeous. I don’t want some young, meaningless woman. I want you. Sexy, intelligent, caring, strong, determined, sometimes annoying, beautiful you.” Kit caressed his cheeks before pulling him into a heated kiss. She took his bottom lip between her teeth and he reached around her to finish removing her dress. Once her body was devoid of her dress, he spun Kit around and walked her to the bed.
Kit was making quick work of Randolph’s belt and pants. He kicked off his pants and socks while Kit was removing the decorative pillows and comforter off the bed. Randolph wrapped his arms around her from behind and placed soft kisses along the column of her neck. He gave her a squeeze before whispering in her ear.
“God Kit, you are beautiful. I don’t deserve you.”
Kit turned around in his arms, took his face in her hands. She was starring into his eyes searching for the reasons he felt unworthy of her. “I think you’ve forgotten that we have both made mistakes in our past. But now is not the time to focus on past transgressions. I chose to be in the here and now and I am very much looking forward to having sex with you.” Her affection for him was so profound, but she wasn’t ready to call what they were about to do making love. She was still processing their new level of friendship and she wasn’t prepared to call it love out loud.
Randolph groaned at her comment. He sometimes forgot how blunt and direct Kit could be. It was one of the qualities he loved about her and he truly loved her. He knew she wasn’t ready for that proclamation, so he wasn’t going to let her know yet by saying it, he would just have to show her how much she meant to him.
Their night carried on with heat, passion, deep kisses, gentle touches, words of admiration, and love. Afterwards they laid tangled up in each other’s arms. Both of their hearts were still pounding and neither had caught their breath yet. Randolph placed a gentle kiss on Kit’s forehead wanting to say he loved her but he stopped himself. He knew if he said it now she would only think it was the endorphin high and not his true feelings. He would wait until the right moment so that she would know how much he truly loved her.
He heard Kit’s sigh of contentment as she snuggled in closer. He could only smile and hope that they could be together again before he had to head home tomorrow.
“Randolph, just so you are aware, I have no plans or anywhere I need to be tomorrow.”
“Is that your way of asking me to spend the day with you?”
“Yes, if you don’t have anything scheduled, I would enjoying spending more time with you.”
“I would love to. Get some sleep Kit. You’ll need all the energy you can get for tomorrow.”
She didn’t have to look at him to know he had a smirk on his face and a sparkle in his eye. She gave him a soft slap on his chest before returning his teasing comment. “I wouldn’t worry too much about me, gramps.”
Chapter 2: Candle Light Dinner
Summary:
Power outage leads to an impromptu candle light dinner.
Chapter Text
Kit had just arrived at home and checked her watch to see how much time she had to get ready for Randolph and her’s date night. He was scheduled for surgery in the early afternoon, but should be home in time for their dinner plans. Kit decided that she would freshen up her hair and makeup now while she had the time. The current storm moving in, with it’s added humidity, was not doing her hair any favors. She decided it may be best to pull her hair up into a ponytail, the added humidity and impending rain would only mess it up if she left it down. Having it out of her way would make their night out more enjoyable if she didn’t have to think about how ‘big’ it was getting throughout the night.
Kit could hear Randolph coming into the house as she walked out of the bathroom. She had given him a key to her home awhile back so he could let himself in whenever. It was especially handy with later hours at the hospital and he knew he was always welcome to come to her place.
“You’re here earlier then I was expecting.”
“The surgery went better than planned. When I got in there, I saw that the mass was not as intricately attached as I thought from imaging. Removal was simple.”
“What’s all this?” Kit pointed to the grocery store bags in is hands.
“Well, I thought that since the weather isn’t looking too promising, that maybe we could stay in and enjoy a nice dinner at home. That is, if it’s alright with you.”
“That sounds wonderful darling. I’m going to go change out of my work clothes into something more comfortable. If you would like to put those bags in the kitchen go ahead. Feel free to start dinner. I think you know where everything is.”
Kit entered the kitchen after changing into a comfortable shirt and yoga pants. Randolph was already hard at work with dinner preparations, his sleeved rolled up passed his elbows. Randolph did most of the work as he put together a simple Italian dinner, Kit helping out when he asked. Most of the time though, she leaned against the kitchen island watching Randolph cook. It had started to rain when the finishing touches were being made on their dinner. There was a bright flash of light and a loud clap of thunder, then darkness.
“Well, this is unfortunate. At least our dinner is done and ready to eat.” Taking his phone, Randolph turned on the flashlight so they could see.
“I have some candles in the other room. We can have dinner by candle light.”
Randolph put their food on plates, while Kit got the candles.
“Kit where are those candles at?”
“Change of plans.”
Walking into the living room, Randolph saw that Kit had laid out a blanket on the floor next to the coffee table. There were several candles lit around the room and a couple on the table.
“I thought that maybe we could eat in here. Romantic don’t you think.”
The grin on Randolph’s face showed his approval of her idea. He went to get their dinner and Kit followed grabbing a bottle of wine and two glasses. Sitting cross legged on the floor, they ate dinner, conversing about the latest hospital developments. When they finished, Randolph took Kit’s hand and pulled her over to sit between his legs. The couch supported them as Kit leaned back into his chest. Her hair being pulled back into a ponytail made easy access for Randolph to place light kisses along her neck.
“You know, we may be too old to be sitting on the floor like this.”
“Speak for yourself gramps. I’m perfectly comfortable.”
“I can tell. I really enjoy nights like this, where we can just be together enjoying each other’s company. I spent so much of my life alone, this just feels right.”
Moaning her response since Randolph continued to pepper her neck and shoulders with kisses, “Agreed.”
“Thank you for allowing me into your life. For helping me to be a better man, in all aspects of my life. Thank you for allowing me to spend time with you in your home. Especially, after a tough day in the OR when I just want to fall asleep with you in my arms.”
Turning in his arms, Kit reached a hand up to caress his cheek, “You know that you are always welcomed here. And I hope you know that I love you very much.”
Leaning down, Randolph gave her a kiss. Not wanting to part from her soft lips, he reluctantly pulled back. “I know and I love you too, very much.”
Pulling Randolph closer, Kit gave him a deep and slow kiss. Their feelings for one another were drawing them closer together and heat began to spread through their bodies. As their hands began grasping at the other’s clothes the power came back on. They pulled apart, both breathless, and searching the other’s eyes to see the desire they both shared.
“Seems like the storm is letting up. I was really enjoying this candle light dinner, I hate to see it end,” Randolph said still trying to catch his breath. Kit stood up and reached down to help Randolph off the floor. She chuckled at him as he groaned getting up and his knees popped
“Who says it has too? Why don’t you move these dishes to the kitchen, I’ll take this candles to my bedroom. Maybe open a window so we can listen to the rain and enjoy the after rain smell.”
“Have I told you that I love you?”
“Once or twice.”
“That’s not nearly enough.”
“Take care of those dishes and maybe you can tell me a couple more times tonight.” Kit gave him a wink as she headed towards her bedroom.

Chapter Text
It was getting late, Kit had been sitting in Randolph’s condo for an hour already, dressed and ready for their night. They had plans to go to the symphony and his condo was closer to the concert hall. Randolph had stopped by Kit’s office before he started his rounds and left his key behind for her so she could head to his place to get ready. With his late rounds, he wanted to make sure they had plenty of time to get ready to head to the symphony together. Randolph still wasn’t back from the hospital and Kit was starting to wonder if they were going to make it to the symphony.
Kit was beginning to get fidgety and decided to explore Randolph’s condo some. She had been in his condo a handful to times, but had never been further than the living room, kitchen or the guest bathroom. Walking down the hall Kit took in the artwork that was hung on the walls. There were no pictures, but she knew Randolph didn’t have much of a family. Pushing open a door along her way, she found his office. So far, this space was very different then the rest of his place. There was a record player, a shelf full of vinyls, and posters from concerts hanging on the wall. Kit walked over to the book shelf and started thumbing through his records. As she was snooping through his records, she find one of her favorite albums amongst his stash. She put the vinyl on the record player when her phone dinged.
‘I’m so sorry Kit. Not going to make it home in time for the symphony.’
‘That’s alright darling. I’ll see you when you get home.’
Kit listened to the album for a little bit, then decided to go change out of her dress into something more comfortable. When she came back to the office, she noticed a guitar sitting in the corner that she hadn’t seen the first time she was in there. Randolph had never mentioned playing guitar before, she wondered if he played or if it was just part of his office motif.
“Kit. Kit, where are you? Kit? Hey- I’m so sorry. I had an issue with a patient. It’s all taken care of now but it kept me longer than I expected. Is that Bruce Springsteen?”
“Randolph, honey, I understand that our jobs get in the way sometimes and yes that is Springsteen.”
“I see you found my record collection.” Randolph walked over to her and gave her a kiss. “You have good taste in music.”
“As do you. You have a very impressive collection here, but what really caught my eye was the guitar. Do you play?”
“Yea- uh- yes but not very well. It was always a hobby of mine when I was younger.”
“Will you play for me?” Kit gave him a pleading look.
Randolph reached his hand up behind his neck and was rubbing it nervously. “Kit, I- I’m not that good. You don’t want to hear me play.”
Kit walked over and picked up the guitar and stood in front of Randolph with it in her hands. “Please. Since we won’t be hearing any music at the symphony tonight, I would like to have my owe private symphony.”
Randolph sighed, he did feel bad about being the reason they missed the concert. “Fine. But I’m going to change first.”
When Randolph returned, Kit was already in the living room sitting on the couch with his guitar in her lap. He sat down next to her and picked up the guitar. He played a few chords to start then started playing a song. Kit wasn’t quite sure what song he was playing, but it really didn’t matter. She was awestruck and mesmerized by his playing. She reached her hand over and placed it on his knee.
“Randolph you are really good.”
“Thank you. It’s nothing that special but I do enjoy it.”
He changed songs and started humming along with his playing, then to Kit’s surprise, he started to sing. He was singing Tennessee Whiskey and he sounded so sexy. Kit couldn’t believe what she was hearing and an unexpected heat flooded her body. She was so compelled by his singing that she got down on the floor in front of him, legs tucked beneath her, and hands resting on his knees. She sat and marveled at this new found talent of his, watching the way his hand flexed up and down the neck of the guitar. She closed her eyes and swayed along to the song, letting his baritone carry her away. When he finished, she looked up at him and saw the biggest grin across his face.
“You know, I have never shared this with anyone before. It was always my secret pastime.”
Kit sat up on her knees and took his face in her hands, locking eyes. “Thank you for sharing it with me.” She gave him a gentle kiss. When she pulled back she said, “Play me something else.”
Randolph chuckled an ‘okay’ and started to play and sing another song. Kit didn’t care that they missed the symphony, she had her own private concert that evening, which she spent sitting on the floor with her head laying on her folded arms that were across Randolph’s knees.
Notes:
You can hear Bruce sing Tennessee Whiskey if you YouTube it.
Chapter 4: Breakfast
Notes:
Short chapter of pure fluff. It's been a rough week so I needed to live in the Kitbell world for a little bit, but this is all I was capable of tonight.
Chapter Text
Since they started sharing a bed, Kit had learned that Randolph was a heavy sleeper. It didn’t matter whether or not he was tired, Randolph would fall into a deep sleep and none of her tossing and turning would wake him up. This morning was no different. Kit was curled into Randolph’s side, head on his chest, fingers idly running up and down the bare skin exposed under the covers.
Since she woke, he had yet to stir. Kit chose to indulge herself in the tranquil of the morning, she had snuggled into him deeper, seeking the warmth from his body. Neither had put much clothes on after a blissful night of love making, which left her shivering when she woke, Randolph having stolen the covers. That was another thing Kit had learned, Randolph was a cover stealer. On a few occasions she thought he did it on purpose, being that he figured out she was a heat seeker. Any time she was cold, she would wrap herself around him, and she suspected he enjoyed it.
Kit’s peaceful morning was interrupted by the sound of her stomach rumbling. She peered over Randolph’s shoulder to look at the alarm clock and noticed it was well into the morning. Neither was scheduled to be at the hospital, so they had chose not to set any alarms this morning. Regretfully, Kit left the comfort and warmth of Randolph’s arms. She grabbed her robe off the accent chair sitting near the bed.
She stopped by the bathroom before heading to the kitchen to make breakfast. She was standing in front of the stove, busy with making omelettes and cutting up fruit. She was so focused that she hadn’t heard Randolph enter the kitchen and slightly jumped when his arms wrapped around her from behind.
“Good morning.” His voice was rough with sleep and he nuzzled into her hair, taking in the remaining hints of her perfume on her skin and shampoo in her hair.
“I didn’t hear you get up. I hop you are hungry.”
“I am starving, but not for food.” His hands began fiddling with the knot of her robe.
Kit hummed a response before pushing her bottom back into him. Randolph groaned while his hands finally released the tie of her robe, finding purchase on her soft skin.
“I don’t think so darling. I went through all of this work to make us breakfast, which we will be eating.”
“Oh, I plan on eating. Oof.” Kit elbowed him in the ribs.
“You’re incorrigible.”
“But you love me any way.” Randolph gave her a squeeze and kiss on the cheek before heading to the cabinet to grab plates for their breakfast and mugs for their coffee.
They settled in to a nice breakfast, both still in their robes. Kit was teasing him all throughout breakfast. She had retied her robe, but loosely. Every time she leaned over her plate to take a bite, the top of her robe parted showing off more and more skin as she went. When she finished, she leaned back, arm over the back of her chair, and made a show of crossing her legs.
“You’re a tease.”
“Is that so? What are you going to do about it?” Kit eyed him with a glint in her eye.
“I am going to do plenty about it.”
Grabbing Kit’s hand, pulling her up, Randolph pulled her in close, and kissed her hard and long. The need for air became too much and they reluctantly pulled apart, gasping for air.
“Prove. It.” Kit said between ragged breathes. Their eyes locked and she could see the mischief deep in his blue eyes. She squealed as Randolph picked her up bridal style and hastily headed towards the bedroom.
Chapter 5: Josie Stays the Night
Chapter Text
It was getting late, Kit looked down at Josie who was curled up into her side, legs tucked under a blanket. The movie they were watching was close to being over and she could tell Josie was about ready for bed. She was going to be spending the whole weekend with Grandma Kit and Dr. Bell and tonight was movie night with all the best movie snacks.
When Molly asked her mom to watch Josie for the weekend she wasn’t surprised when Kit told her she was planning to spend the weekend with Randolph. She told Molly that she would talk with Randolph and see if they could change their plans to another weekend. Molly assured her mother that Randolph was more than welcome to spend time with her and Josie if he wanted to, especially since she knew that they were officially a couple.
As the credits rolled, Josie let out a yawn. “I think it might be someone’s bedtime. What do you think sweetheart?”
“Grandma, could you read me a chapter from my book before I go to sleep?”
“I believe that could be arranged. Why don’t you go brush your teeth and put your pajamas on, I’ll meet you in the guest room here in a bit.” Kit gave Josie a kiss on the top of her head before she took off down the hall.
“I’ll clean all of this up while you go read to Josie. I’ll wait until you finish before I head home.”
“You can stay the night.”
“What? I- I don’t want Molly or Derek to be uncomfortable with me staying the night while Josie is here. It’s not a problem for me to head home.”
“Molly told me that they were perfectly fine with you spending the weekend with Josie and me. She also said, and I quote, just make sure Randolph puts his clothes back on before walking around the house naked.”
“Does she- do they- does she really think we are going to be having sex with Josie in the house.” Randolph’s voice was barely above a whisper because he didn’t want Josie to overhear him talking about having sex with her grandma.
Kit laughed at him as he became flustered with the accusation. “I am going to go read to Josie. I’ll meet you in my room when I’m finished.” She gave him a soft kiss and patted his chest before heading to find Josie.
Kit found Josie already sitting in bed with her book in her lap. “You all ready for bed, darling?”
“Yes. Is Dr. Bell going to be staying the night?”
Kit walked over to the bed, pulled back the covers, and joined Josie on the bed. “He is, if that is okay with you?”
“I like Dr. Bell. He can stay the night.”
“I’m glad you like him and you can call him Randolph you know?” Josie nods and hands Kit her book while she gets comfortable snuggled into Kit’s side.
Randolph finished cleaning up the living room then headed down the hall towards Kit’s bedroom. He was still pretty apprehensive about staying the night with Josie in the house. He could hear Kit reading to Josie as he got closer to the guest bedroom, that he had to pass on the way to Kit’s room. He stopped outside of the door and listened to Kit read. She was very involved in the book, he could hear it in her voice. He was about to leave them to their book when Josie’s voice stopped him where he was.
“Grandma, do you love Randolph?”
He couldn’t see Kit’s reaction, but there was a long pause before she started to response and it was making him nervous. While they were a couple, and sleeping together, they hadn’t really expressed their feelings of love in words.
“Josie, love is very complicated and hard to explain sometimes.”
“No it’s not. You either love him or you don’t.” Kit sighed, she sometimes forgot the innocence and simplicity of childhood.
“Well, if I had to say one way or the other, then yes, I do love Randolph.” Randolph let out a breath the he hadn’t realized he was holding.
“Really? I thought so, because you two are always together and giving each other the heart eyes.”
Kit laughed, the book completely forgotten at this point. “Heart eyes? We don’t look at each other with heart eyes.”
“Oh yes you do! That’s okay, I think it’s cute.”
“I don’t know about cute. We are a little too old for cute, don’t you think.” Randolph had to contain his laughter. He could only imagine the look on Kit’s face, talking about them giving each other heart eyes.
Josie wrapped her arms around Kit and gave her a hug. Her head was on Kit’s shoulder when she looked up at her. “Randolph makes you happy.”
“You are very observant and outspoken on this subject, aren’t you, my sweet girl.”
“I just wanted to know if my suspicions were true. That you do love Dr. Bell.”
“Yes, I do, very much. He makes me very happy and I hope that he is around for a very long time.”
“I hope he is too. He’s a great pizza maker. Plus he loves you too, I’m sure of it.”
Randolph decided it was time to make his presence known. “I’m finished cleaning up the living room. How’s the book?”
“It’s good, but I think I am ready for bed. Good night grandma.” Josie gave Kit a kiss on the cheek, which Kit return before getting up from the bed.
“Good night darling, sweet dreams.”
Kit pulled the covers up over Josie, turned off the light as she headed out of the room.
“Good night Dr. Bell.” Josie said has they left the room.
“Good night Josie.”
When they made it to Kit’s room, they shut the door behind them and Randolph took Kit into his arms. “So you love me do you?”
“What- I- I.” It was Kit’s turned to be flustered.
“I overheard your conversation with Josie.”
“I see. Then yes, Randolph Bell, I love you very much. I am so happy you are here with me and that you are in my life.”
“Good, because I would hate for you to be giving heart eyes to someone who you didn’t love.”
“You heard that too.” Kit placed her forehead on the center of his chest, trying to hide her laughter.
“Oh yes. You didn’t ask, but I love you too, Elizabeth Katherine Voss. I love you very much. So much so, that I cannot even fully express it in words.”
He took her face between his hands and brought her lips to his in a sweet, meaningful kiss. They may need Josie to come over more often.
Chapter 6: Morning Walk
Summary:
Kit and Randolph go for a morning walk.
Chapter Text
Randolph groaned, he buried his head further into his pillow. He could tell it was early, real early, by the soft glow seeping through the gap in the curtains. He wasn’t sure why he was awake so early. He reached out for Kit, but her side of the bed was empty. The warmth under his fingertips and the lingering smell of her shampoo told him that she hadn’t left the bed that long ago. He rolled over on his back when he heard movement next to the bed. He opened one eye to see Kit walking out of the closet, dressed in leggings and pulling a sweater over her head.
“You’re up early. Where are you off to?” His voice was gruff with sleep.
“I’m going for a morning walk. Sorry darling, I didn’t mean to wake you. Go back to sleep.” She walked over and gave him a kiss on the forehead.
“Would you mind if I joined you?”
“That would be lovely. I’ll go get us a couple water bottles while you get dressed.”
Randolph came jogging down the stairs in a sweatshirt and shorts. He was sitting on the couch putting on his tennis shoes when Kit walked into the living room. “Ready?”
“Yeah, if you are.” Randolph opened the front door for Kit, after he locked the door, Kit handed him his water. “Which way should we go?”
“I like watching the sunrise when I go on morning walks, so we can head towards the park.”
“Sounds good to me.” They started walking towards the park that was a few blocks away from their house. They didn’t talk much on their walk, enjoying the crispness and peacefulness of the dawn. The pinks and blues of the sun peaking through the clouds were painting a picture prefect morning. They began walking along the path that looped around the park. When Kit changed the hand she was holding her water in, Randolph reached for her now free hand. Lacing their fingers together they continued walking hand in hand, soaking in the warmth of the morning sun.
“What was your favorite thing to do as a child?” Kit was taken aback by his question that come out of the blue.
“Why do you ask?”
“This walk just reminded me of my childhood.”
“How so?” Kit tilted her head and eyed him, intrigued by this conversation. Randolph didn’t talk about his past often.
“Well, I had a group of buddies, that we would go on camping trips together when we were in high school. It was always a lot of fun. We would hike, swim, fish, we all thought we were really manly camping, being out it the ‘wilderness’. We would do some dumb things too, that only boys do.” He grinned as he thought back to some of their dares they made. “But my favorite part was we would stay up all night on the last day, talking about the girls we were dating or trying to date. We would find a spot were we could watch the sun come up as we sat there dreaming about our futures.”
“That’s a lovely memory, sounds like you all had a lot of fun.”
“We did, some of my greatest memories.” Kit pulled him over to a nearby bench, they sat, and she pulled their joined hands into her lap. Looking towards the last of the sunrise, Kit leaned her head on his shoulder.
“So tell me, did all those dreams from your youth come turn?”
“Some of them did. I became a successful surgeon, fell in love with a beautiful woman. I just didn’t imagine that I would have to wait until I was in my sixties for those to be true.” He gave her a gentle kiss on her head.
“What about your future plans?”
“It is hard for me to think about it, considering my MS, but I know that I want to continue to practice medicine as long is my treatments persist in managing my symptoms. I also want to be with you as long as you’ll have me.”
“I believe I told you that wherever you go I will follow you and that we will face the future together, so I’m yours now and forever.”
“If I asked you to marry me, would you?” He bit the corner of his lip nervously waiting for her response.
“Yes. Are you asking me?” Kit squeezed his hand and turned to look at him, trying to read the emotion on his face.
“Not at this very moment, but when I do, it’s good to know you want the same future.”
“You were worried that I would say no.” Randolph shrugged. “Don’t worry, my answer now and when you ask, will be yes. Come on darling, let’s continue our walk.”
The sun was fully up now as they continued their walk, still holding hands.
“So you never told me, what was your favorite thing to do as a child?”
“Ballet, I was a ballet dancer for about ten years before an injury forced me to hang up the toe shoes.”
“Ballet you say, so that’s why you are so flexible.” Randolph had a smug smirk across his face, which turned into a laugh when Kit bumped her shoulder into his.
“You’re insufferable.”
“Too bad, you just said you would marry me, so it looks like you are stuck with me.”
“I don’t see a ring on my finger yet.” Kit held out her hand that was holding her water bottle.
“Not for long, honey, not for long.” Randolph released her hand, wrapped his arm around her waisted, pulling her in close. He loved watching the sunrise when he was a kid out camping with his buddies, but he loved it even more now. Sharing that tranquil moment before the chaos of the day with the great love his life, his future wife, was his favorite sunrise so far.
Chapter 7: Fix It
Summary:
Jake is moving and Randolph doesn't want his family to leave.
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
“Kit open up! I need to talk to you now.” Randolph was outside Kit’s private bathroom knocking persistently, he tried the handle but it was locked. He was angry and needed to vent, also he desperately needed Kit’s help.
“Kit, seriously, I need to talk to you, now.”
The locked flipped and Randolph flung the door open and stepped into the bathroom closing the door behind him. Kit stood in the middle of the bathroom, out of sight of the door opening. Standing in only a towel, hair pulled up in a clip, with a look of annoyance. One hand held her towel in place, the other was on her hip.
“Bloody hell Randolph, I’m a little busy here.”
“Yeah, yeah, nothing I haven’t seen before.” He began pacing around the small space trying to relieve the anger he was feeling.
“You sure know how to make a woman feel good about herself.”
“Kit, Jesus, you know I think you're sexy as hell.”
Kit sighed, he was obviously very upset and she had a limited amount of time to shower and get ready for her board meeting. She had been called in for emergency surgery this morning and wanted to shower before going to her meeting. “What has you so worked up? Can it wait until I finish my shower?”
“No. I need you to fix it.”
“Fix what? Also I’m going to be late for my meeting if I don’t shower now, so you will have to explain while I shower.” Kit hung her towel up on the hook and stepped into the shower. Randolph put the lid down and sat on the toilet.
“Jake, Greg, and Sammie are moving. I can’t have that happen. I feel like I have finally reconnected with Jake, made amends and our relationship is good. You have helped so much in that area of my life and for that I thank you, but I can’t have them leaving. I have enjoyed getting to be grandpa to Sammie, I love that little girl so much, and I want them here with us.”
Through the glass, Randolph could see Kit was washing her body. He was very tempted to join her, but knew she would not approve of him making her late to her meeting. For now, he would save that thought for another day. Calling out over the shower spray, “I received Jake’s resignation today. I hate to see them leave because I love seeing you with Sammie and your relationship with Jake has really grown, but I am not sure what you want me to do.”
“Give Jake a raise, better hours, I’m not sure, but there has to be something you can do in order to make them want to stay.”
The shower stopped, Kit opened the door, reaching for her towel she began to dry off.
“Randolph, darling, you know I can’t do that. Plus Jake’s job isn’t the reason they are leaving.” She wrapped the towel around herself, walked over so she was standing in front of him. She placed her hands on his shoulders in order to get his attention, he looked up at her. “Greg has a great opportunity in front of him, Sammie is going to be enrolled in a well known school, you know this is the best for all of them. Jake is making a sacrifice for his family by changing job locations, but they are not going to be that far away.”
He reached out and placed his hands on her hips, pulling her close. “You’re right, I just miss them already. It is going to be a great opportunity for all of them. I just- I just don’t want them to move away, they mean so much to me.”
Kit’s hands found his cheeks, her thumb running along the corner of his eye, catching a stray tear. “I don’t want to see them go either, but there is nothing we can do except love and support them on their next chapter of life. How about this, we have a family dinner before they leave, spend the whole evening together. Then, once they get settled into their new home, we take a weekend trip to go visit them. Take Sammie to a museum, spend the entire weekend at their new place. They can show us around and we’ll take them out for a nice dinner.”
“That sounds wonderful. Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For always knowing what I need to hear, putting up with me when I’m being irrational.”
“You’re welcome, honey. And you’re not being completely irrational, I know they mean so much to you. Now I need to get dressed for my meeting.”
Randolph stood up, gave Kit a kiss, before heading towards the door. “Someday we are going to make use of that shower.” He gave her a wink, she rolled her eyes, before he left her to get ready for her meeting.

Softball season starts tomorrow, so updates might take me awhile. I'll try to update sometime this week.
Chapter 8: My Shirt
Summary:
Kit and Bell do laundry (in their imaginary house because I don't think they have one ;) I wish we could see them at home)
Chapter Text
It was Saturday evening, Randolph had been gone all week for a conference and Kit was very much looking forward to his return. She had never been super dependent on having another person around to help her, but she was really missing him. After way too many nights spent sleeping on her office couch, Randolph’s diagnosis, they both learned they desperately needed each other. They had talked one night about what they could do to help each other and how they needed to learn to let some of their self-dependence go.
Randolph volunteered to take doing the laundry away from her. A lot of their clothes they took to the dry cleaners and they would trade off on who was dropping off and picking up based on schedules. However, when it came to their non dry cleaning, Kit usually spent the weekend doing it, so Randolph said he would do it so that she would have time to rest. Since Randolph was out of town, Kit thought she would do the laundry for him this weekend.
She was in their bedroom sorting their laundry. Picking up one of Randolph’s t-shirts, she brought it to her noise, closing her eyes she breathed in. Surprisingly, his smell still lingered on the fabric. She walked over to the bed, sat the shirt down, crossing her arms in front of her, she pulled her shirt over her head. After taking his shirt and putting it on, she continued with the laundry.
She was in the process of switching the first load into the dryer when she heard Randolph coming into the house. She walked out of the laundry room when she finished, leaning against the doorframe, she watched him bring his suitcase in, coat draped over his arm.
“How was your week darling?”
Randolph sighed, glad to finally be home, and excited to see Kit. “Informative, exhausting. I am so glad I no longer have to sit through mundane meetings everyday. I don’t know how you do it, I miss the OR too much.”
Walking over to Kit after putting his stuff down, he wrapped his arms around her, and pulled her in close. Her arms instinctively went around his neck. “Some meetings are not enjoyable, but they are important to the success of the hospital so I tolerate them. I do miss being the the OR though.”
“Well we miss having you in the OR. And I missed having you in my arms this week.” He leaned in, taking her bottom lip between his. It felt good to be home, having her in his arms, her lips against his. He pulled back, a grin on his face, taking in Kit and the sound of the dryer in the background.
“Are you doing the laundry?”
“Yes. I figured you wouldn’t want to do it after a long week away from home.”
“Thank you, but you didn’t have to. I would have still done it this weekend. It’s one of my responsibilities and I’m sure your week was just as long as mine.”
“How about I make you a deal? If you aren’t too tired, why don’t we finish the laundry together?”
“Only if we can have some dinner first. I’m starving.”
“Deal.” She gave him another kiss before pulling away from him. She didn’t get far before he pulled her back into him. The smirk on his face and twinkle in his eye said he was up to no good. His left hand found the hem of the shirt she was wearing, the fabric sliding between his fingers.
“Is this my shirt?”
“Yes.”
Something about Kit wearing his clothes always did something to him. While he did find it sexy as hell, it was the warmth he felt from being reminded how their lives were intertwined and how easily they fit together.
“Dr. Voss, did you miss me so much that you resorted to wearing my shirt?”
She gave him a playful slap on the chest, two could play this game. “No. I barely even noticed you were gone.”
Randolph covered her hand on his chest with his, providing a look of fake shock and hurt. He knew that wasn’t true because she called him every night he was gone. Twice the last two nights when she was unable to fall asleep. He stayed on the phone well after she laid back down, not talking, just his presence on the other end of the line enough to loll her to sleep.
“I’m only wearing your shirt because I didn’t have anything of my own to wear since the laundry needed done.”
“I find that hard to believe given the fact that your clothes take up more than half of the closet.”
His hands fell to her waist pulling her hips into his. Oh how he missed this women this last week and he needed to be close to her. He lifted one hand to her cheek and pulled her in for a heated kiss. His other hand slid into the front of her yoga pants, teasing, but barely touching. She gasped and Randolph to advantage of the moment, his tongue finding hers. His hand dipped lower into the waistband of her panties. Just when Kit was giving in to his touch he stepped back, no longer touching her. Her body was on fire, heat pooling low in her belly, and she groaned.
Randolph chuckled at the sight of her flushed and obviously frustrated. “Plus, I’m pretty sure that was the shirt I was wearing before I left, so it seems to me you have no problem rewearing dirty laundry.”
Between ragged breathes Kit said, “I’m not saying that I did, but if I said ‘I missed you’ would you continue.”
“Only if you really, truly, meant it.”
Kit took a step closer to him, taking his face between her hand. She wanted to kiss that cocky grin right off his face but first she had to let him know just how much she missed him. “Yes, I missed you. So much so, that I put your shirt on just because it smelt like you. I missed you bringing me coffee in the morning. I missed your arms wrapped around me at night. I even missed your ego.”
“That’s what I thought.”
“Ego. Why don’t you put that ego to good use. Just a minute ago you were so sure of yourself that you figured you could turn me on to get the truth. Now that you have it, what are you going to do about it?”
“I plan on showing you how much I missed you as well.” She pulled his face to hers, lips locking, his hands sliding under her bottom. “How much time do we have until the laundry needs switched?”
“Another 20 minutes or so. Why?”
“That seems like enough time to dirty up a few more clothes.”
He leaned in to kiss her again and lifted her up into his arms. Her legs wrapped around his waist, ankles locking behind his back. He walked them back into the laundry room and sat her down on top of the dryer. Kit briefly thought that maybe they should renegotiate and do laundry together more often. That was her last coherent thought before Randolph blissfully showed her just how much he missed her.
Chapter 9: Jealous
Summary:
Randolph is jealous of Brett.
Chapter Text
It was a quiet Friday evening, the only lights on in the house were the lamps on the end tables. Randolph and Kit were enjoying their time at home, snuggled up on the couch. Randolph’s back was against the armrest, Kit was settled between his legs. There was no need to talk, they were just enjoying the solitude and the presence of each other.
Kit’s right hand rested on Randolph’s knee, while his left was settled just inside the waistband of her pants. His fingers moved absentmindedly between her hips. His touch wasn’t sexual, nor enticing, it was just there. Kit could tell something was on his mind, but he had yet to voice it.
Kit reached for his hand, stopping his movements. “What are you thinking?”
“Nothing. It’s not important and it’s idiotic anyway.”
“Try me. If it has you this deep in thought, then it must be something.”
Randolph sighed, turning his nose into her hair, breathing in her scent. Sometimes he really hated that she knew him better than he knew himself. She had a sense for when something was bothering him. “Seriously Kit, it’s- it’s nothing.”
“Okay,” she responded, letting him have his space with whatever his mind was wrestling with, she wouldn’t press him. They sat in the silence a little longer, his fingers starting to move again with seemingly no purpose.
“I’m jealous of Brett.”
Kit turned her head so she could see him, confusion was written across her face. “What? Why?”
“I told you it was stupid.”
“Please explain. Maybe it’s not as stupid as you think.”
“I never wanted kids. It wasn’t a desire that sparked any interest in me. I was content with having Jake in my life, but never felt like I needed kids of my own. I was happy with my career, my lifestyle, kids just weren’t in the plan.”
Kit was still not quite understanding what he was talking about, then it dawned on her what his fingers had been doing. The whole time they were brushing across the skin between her hips, they were tracing her c-section scar.
“Are you regretting not having children of your own?”
“No, no. While it may have been nice, I would have made a terrible father. Look how I messed things up with Jake.”
“Yes, but your relationship is great now. You can stop punishing yourself.”
“I know. Just think about what a mess I would have made of my own kids. I’m happy with having Jake and his family back in my life. I love having your kids apart of my life as well. I don’t know, I just feel jealous that Brett got to experience the joys of fatherhood with you. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if we met 30-40 years ago. Would we have what we have now?”
Kit leaned up and kissed his cheek. “No. We are both too stubborn, strong willed, and we were chasing our careers. We would have never worked. We needed all our past mistakes to lead us to where we are now.”
“I’m sure you’re right. I’m just kind of jealous that Brett had two beautiful, wonderful girls with you. Sometimes I wish it could have been me. Watching your body change, dealing with mood swings and cravings, seeing you bring life into this world. I think I just have a case of melancholy. Like I said it is nothing.”
Kit placed her hand on top of his, which was still moving over her skin. “I say you lucked out. As much as I enjoyed bringing those two girls into the world. I wasn’t that fun to deal with when I was pregnant. Terrible morning sickness, constantly waking Brett up with my tossing and turning because I couldn’t get comfortable. Craving chocolate and hamburgers and being more bullheaded than usual.”
Randolph gave her a kiss on the head, smiling at the thought of her being more of a pain in his backside than she had been when she first started working at Chastain.
“You know, I don’t think I have ever asked you, who did you have a c-section with, Molly or Amelia?”
“Both, actually.”
“Really?”
Kit leaned back further into his embrace. “I’m not sure you would believe it now, but I had really big babies. Both of my girls were 9, almost 10 pounds at birth.”
“Seriously? I wouldn’t have guessed that either of your girls were 9 pound babies. I also can’t imagine you carrying babies that large.”
“Yes, I was huge.” Holding her hands out in front of her for added effect. “It took 4 men and a crane to get me out of bed in the morning. Given their size and my smaller frame, it was best for all of us if I had a c-section.”
“I’m sure it was.” Both of his hands made their way into the waistband of her pants, folded over her lower belly, his chin resting on her shoulder.
“Are you still feeling jealous of Brett?”
“Yes, but it will pass. I hope you don’t think that I’m unhappy with the life we have now.”
“I know you aren’t. You want to know something.” He responded with a squeeze. “I’ve wondered what our kids would have been like if we had gotten together many moons ago.”
“And?”
“They’re beautiful… but a pain in the ass.” She laughed. “Could you imagine the attitude a child with your’s and mine DNA would have had? We would have been called to the principal’s office all the time.”
Randolph let out a laugh thinking about showing up to the principal’s office with Kit because their daughter got in a fight for standing up for what she believed was right or their son doing something stupid because he was trying to prove he was better than everyone else. But she was right about their kids being gorgeous, how could they not be with Kit as their mother.
“We would had been in trouble for sure. I love you and I love this life we share. Even though we don’t have kids that are part you and part me, I really like the one we have.”
“Me too darling, me too.”
Chapter 10: Sickness and Health
Summary:
Kit is sick and Randolph takes care of her.
Chapter Text
It hit her like a freight train, one moment she was fine, the next she was feeling like death. When Kit went to bed the night before she wasn’t feeling sick at all, she was tired, but that was nothing unusual. Randolph hadn’t noticed her acting like she was getting sick, but during the night he knew she was instantly.
Randolph was use to Kit making her way over to his side of the bed, so it wasn’t her presence that woke him. It was heat. Her body was burning up, her skin felt clammy, and she was shivering.
“Kit. Kit, baby, wake up.” His voice was raspy and laced with sleep. His hand ran across her forehead, assessing her body temperature. A moan was her only response, her body feeling heavy. She could hear Randolph’s voice but it sounded distant. Her head was foggy and she wasn’t sure what was happening.
Randolph swung his legs over the side of the bed, padded towards the bathroom. He returned, blindly, towards the bed with a thermometer and a cold washcloth. He pointed the thermometer at her forehead and it read 102.4. Placing the cold washcloth on her forehead and headed back to the bathroom. He found a glass for water next to the sink and some Tylenol.
Sitting on the edge of the bed he tried to get Kit to wake up enough to take the medication. He took her hand that was laying across her chest, running his thumb over the back of her hand.
“Kit. Hey babe, I know you aren’t feeling well. I need you to wake up enough to take some Tylenol. Please Kit.”
Her eyes started to flutter. “That’s it. Here.” He slid the pills into her mouth, then released her hand, reaching behind her head he lifted it to help her take a drink of the water.
“There.” Laying her head back to rest on the pillows, he put the glass on the nightstand.
Mindful not to jostle Kit too much, he crawled back under the covers next to her. There was a mumble that come from Kit. Holding his breath so he could hear, Randolph waited to see if she would speak again.
“Hold me.”
There was no mistaking this time what Kit was asking. He pulled her close and made sure the covers were still around her and the washcloth on her forehead. He kissed her cheek. “Sleep Kit.”
Morning came and Randolph could feel the dampness of his shirt. Kit’s fever must have broke during the night. He could sense her waking up next to him.
“Morning beautiful, how are you feeling?” Placing his hand on her forehead that was free of the washcloth, he could tell her fever was gone.
Moaning, “My body feels like it weighs a thousand pounds.”
“I’m sure. You had quite the fever during the night. We should get some fluids in you and maybe some toast if you are feeling up to it.” Randolph left Kit in bed as he headed to the kitchen. While he was down in the kitchen, he called the hospital to let the appropriate people know they wouldn’t be in today.
Returning with a tray of orange juice, water, and toast, he was surprised to see Kit wasn’t in bed. Placing the tray on the nightstand, he headed to the bathroom where he could hear the shower. He could see Kit in the shower behind the glass, struggling to stay upright.
“Kit, what are you doing?”
“I needed to shower, my body was sticky from sweat.”
“Why didn’t you wait for me?” Randolph was already undressing and stepping in the shower behind her. Wrapping his arms around her waist, holding her up. She leaned back into his embrace.
“I love you, but you are out of your mind sometimes. We’ll blame it on the fever this time. You know you don’t have to do everything on your own. Let me help you.”
“Okay.” There was no argument from her considering how weak her body was. Randolph left one arm around her and his leg slide between hers holding her upright as he reached for her body wash.
He helped her shower, brought her back to the bedroom to sit on the bench at the end of the bed while he changed the sheets. Once Kit was back into bed, Randolph gave her the tray with breakfast. Kit eat a little and drank some juice.
Randolph joined her in the bed and they settled in for some more rest. Kit slept most of the day, it was late afternoon before she woke again.
“Hey, how are you feeling?”
“Much better.”
“Would you like some chicken noodle soup?”
“That sounds wonderful. I think I would also like to go sit on the couch.”
Kit made her way downstairs to the couch, while Randolph made chicken noodle soup from his grandma’s recipe. He found her in the living room with her computer in her lap. Closing her laptop, he handed her a bowl of soup.
“You do not need to be working. The hospital will still be standing when you return tomorrow.”
Kit rolled her eyes at him. He chuckled in response, thinking she must be feeling better.
“This is really good darling.”
“It’s my grandma’s recipe. I never wanted anything but her soup as a kid when I was sick.”
“I can see why.”
They spent the evening curled up on the couch, Randolph preventing Kit from doing any more work.
“Thank you for taking care of me last night and today.”
He leaned his forehead against hers, taking her hand in his, “Anytime. But next time you try to do something crazy on your own, like shower after being really sick, you’ll remember that you do not have to do everything on your own. We are doing this life together, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part.”
Her only response was a nod, as Randolph ran his thumb over the gold band on her left hand.
Chapter 11: Marked

Kit wakes up to an unwanted surprise.

Chapter Text
Kit was going into the hospital early today because she had a board meeting she needed to prepare for. Randolph wasn’t scheduled for surgery until later in the morning. It was still dark out when Kit’s alarm went off, quietly slipping out of bed, she grabbed her robe from the foot of the bed, covering her naked body on her way to the bathroom. Not wanting to wake Randolph, she didn’t turn on any lights until she was behind the closed bathroom door.
Randolph had heard her alarm, but rolled over to his stomach, burying his face in his pillow. He could hear Kit going about her morning routine and closed his eyes fading back into sleep.
Kit was washing her hands, getting ready to wash her face. Lathering up her facial cleaner she began washing her face. Scrubbing her cheeks, forehead, chin, she turned her face from side to side, examining every pore and line along the way. Moving down her neck, she froze. Not having her glasses on, she wasn’t sure if she was seeing things correctly. She moved closer to the mirror her fingers sliding down the spot on her neck. At closer inspection she wasn’t mistaking this new spot.
“Randolph!”
He had already fallen back to sleep, but seemed to hear Kit yell his name. Thinking he was just dreaming he rolled over again to his back. ‘Whack’ the pillow came down hard on his chest. His body instantly curled up in defense.
“Jesus, Kit. What the hell!”
“Seriously. I have one rule and you broke it. How am I supposed to face the board this morning. I don’t think I have enough make up to hide this. It’s too warm out, so it’s not like I can wear a sweater. What were you thinking?”
She hit him with the pillow again. Squinting against the light coming from the open bathroom door, his hands up in a defensive manner trying to protect himself from another blow.
“If I knew what you were talking about, maybe I could help or explain. I don’t know what I did.”
“Look,” pulling her robe back to expose more of her neck, “I have a hickey! You marked me.”
Even in the dim light from the bathroom illuminating his face, Kit could see the cocky grin forming in the corner of his mouth.
“Oh, whoops.” He shrugged and his grin grew wider. “You know that I can’t resist you and your sexy body. Since the board and HR are aware of our relationship, I guess I just wanted everyone to know that you are with me.”
His response was met with another whack of the pillow. Kit left him with a huff, she didn’t have time to deal with him right now. She had to figure out how she was going to hide the purple mark on her neck.
Applying a ton of concealer and finding a blouse with a higher collar, Kit left without saying goodbye to Randolph. All throughout her board meeting, Kit held her face slightly turned to the side. She wanted to reach up and cover the mark with her hand, but knew that she would draw too much attention if she did so, instead she busied her hands with a pen.
Counting down the minutes until she was free to retreat to her office, Kit was barely listening to what was being said.
“Dr. Voss. Dr. Voss, do you have anything else to add?”
“Oh pardon me, no.”
“Alright, I believe that concludes this meeting. We will see everyone next month.”
Kit couldn’t leave the conference room fast enough.
“Kit, you’re in quite the hurry.” Conrad was lingering in the hallway outside the conference room, jogging to catch up to her.
“Do you need something Conrad?”
“Yeah, I need to talk to you about a patient of mine.”
They continued walking to her office talking along the way. Kit found purchase behind her desk, Conrad leaning forward with his hands on a chair in front of her desk. She turned towards her computer to pull up the information she needed for Conrad and in the process her blouse collar moved.
“So Kit, should Gigi start calling Bell Uncle Randolph?”
“What?” Conrad tilted his head towards her neck. Kit quickly reached up to cover her neck. The flush of her chest crept up her neck and into her cheeks. They hadn’t been necessarily keeping their relationship a secret, the kids knew, but they hadn’t told any of their colleagues. It was new and they wanted to just live in the moment without the pressure of their colleague’s knowing looks.
“Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me.” Conrad winked at her.
“It’s- It’s not a secret. We are too old for a formal announcement. It’s not like we are going to go update our relationship status on social media.” Kit was getting defensive.
“You don’t have to explain. And not that you need my approval, but I think you two are good for each other. Once you find that information for me, you know where to find me.”
Kit sighed, rolling her eyes at the situation, as Conrad left her office. She managed to avoid Randolph all day. Perks of being the CEO, she knew a lot about the whereabouts of her staff. When Randolph returned to her house that evening, he found Kit in the kitchen. He walked over to her and went to give her a kiss. Her hand reached out to his chest to stop him.
“Oh no you don’t. You will not be kissing me for a while.”
“What? I’m sorry Kit. But I must say that I like this look on you.” He reached out with a finger towards the mark on her neck. She in turn, slapped his hand away.
“Thanks to you, Conrad now knows about us.”
Pulling Kit close to him, “Good. I can finally kiss you whenever and wherever I want.”
“No, you cannot. My one rule is that you cannot leave a mark that is visible.”
“I meant at the hospital, but if you want to explore this visible mark locations more, I would be happy to oblige.”
Kit pushed away from him, “You’re lucky I like you, otherwise I would be sending you home for the night.”
“You could, but you would still be marked as mine.”

This chapter idea came to me after one of my players showed up to practice with a hickey on her neck.

Chapter Text
Morning came earlier than expected. The anticipation about their pending move made it difficult to sleep. Kit was the first to wake, needing to pack the last of their items they had needed for the night before. The coffee maker was already packed, so there wasn’t much to do except wait for the kids to show up.
Randolph could hear Kit busy packing the last of their items. He figured he better get up before she packed away his toothbrush and razor he needed this morning.
“Molly texted and said they will be here in about 20 minutes. Do we have anything else that needs packing?” Kit was making her way to the bed Randolph had just abandoned and started gathering the sheets.
“No, I think we got everything last night.” The doorbell rang announcing the arrival of one of the kids.
“That must be Jake. Finish getting ready and I’ll go see them in.” Kit left the room heading to greet Jake, Gregg, and Sammie.
Before long, Molly, Derek, and Josie showed up. Molly was carrying two trays of coffee and Josie a box of donuts as they came inside to greet everyone.
“I figured the coffee maker was already packed and Josie really wanted donuts.”
Taking a tray from Molly, Kit leaned in and gave her a kiss on the cheek, “You are a godsend.”
“Did I hear something about donuts?” Randolph appeared in the living room.
“Grandpa!” Sammie and Josie yelled simultaneously. Running over to him, both girls wrapped their arms around his middle giving him a hug. Josie hugged him with one arm and held the box of donuts up towards him with the other.
“I love donuts. I knew you were my favorite girl.”
“Grandpa, what about me!” Sammie acted shocked, but knew he was kidding. Josie laughed and opened the box.
“Okay, I have two favorite girls.” Both girls looked up at him as he took a donut. He placed it in his mouth and reached down wrapping his arms around the two girls, pulling them in for another hug.
“Hey, what about me!” Kit stood exasperated, but she couldn’t hide the twinkle in her eye as she was amused watching Randolph with their two grandchildren. “Maybe I should rethink this moving in with you.”
Randolph walked over to her, removed the donut from his mouth, and pulled Kit close with his free hand. “You know you are my absolute favorite girl.”
He winked at her and gave her a chastened kiss, not wanting to overstep considering their family was in the room. A disgusted, drawn out, unison “Grandma” and “Grandpa” was heard from his other two favorite girls. The adults laughed as Kit licked her lips, removing a small piece of donut glaze that Randolph left behind.
“Yum, I think I need one of those donuts.”
————
Grabbing several of the essential boxes, the family loaded up their cars, heading to the new house for a tour. The moving company had arrived and would be loading up the rest of their stuff. As Randolph and Kit pulled into the driveway, Amelia exited her car that was parked in the street.
“I’m not sure how I feel about my mother basically being my neighbor.”
“Oh please, your apartment is still a 10 minute drive from here.” Kit gave her daughter a hug when she made it up the driveway.
“Still, I thought after 18 years I wouldn’t have to have my mother watching my every move.” She’s smirked at her mom.
Amelia’s smirk reminded Kit of Brett. Her teasing nature was definitely Kit. “My sweet girl, if you only knew that I’ve been watching your every move since you were born, you would be more worried about the things I know then how close we live.”
As the rest of the family got out of their respective cars, Randolph went to unlock the front door. “Who’s ready for a tour?”
Sammie and Josie ran up the steps to their grandparents new home. Once they stepped inside both girls grabbed one of Randolph’s hands. The trio waited for the rest of the family to join them on the tour. The open concept living room opened up to a modern kitchen. They walked down the hall, stopping at each room along the way.
“And this is where you girls will stay when you spend the night with us.” Kit was showing them the guest room that they planned for the girls.
“It’s so big.” Josie said as marveled at the size.
“Yes, there is enough room for you both to have your own bed.”
“Can my bed have a purple comforter?” Josie asked Kit.
“Can mine be yellow?” Sammie joined in.
“Absolutely, whatever you girls want.”
“Maybe the next time you two are here, you girls can go shopping with grandma Kit.” Randolph added.
“Grandma, where is your room?”
“It’s at the end of the hall. We’ll show you.” Kit took Josie’s hand.
Heading into the room Randolph and her were going to share, several of the family members gasped at the natural light streaming through the wall of windows.
“Mom, this room is gorgeous. I love all the natural light and the view of the backyard.” Amelia began walking around the room, heading towards the wall of windows.
“It’s my favorite part of the house. I loved this room the moment I saw it on the showing.” Kit showed them the spacious walk-in closet and ensuite.
“Alright girls, who wants to see my favorite part of the house.” Randolph raised his eyebrows and reached his hands out for Josie and Sammie.
They headed into the backyard, Randolph showing the girls all the space they had to play. He told their kids how they planned on having everyone over again once they were settled for a BBQ on the patio with the built in grill and pergola for shade. There was also a brick pizza oven Randolph couldn’t wait to try.
“Grandpa, is that a pool?” Sammie pointed to an area off to the side of the patio.
“It is, this is my favorite part of the house.”
The crystal clear, blue water sparkled in the morning sun. There was a built in hot tub on the shallow end, a diving board and slide on the other end. Along the side was a waterfall. The girls were so excited to come and stay with their grandparents and go swimming.
After the tour finished the family headed to the cars to retrieve the boxes they brought with them and started to unpack. They stopped for a lunch break when the moving truck arrived. The moving company unloaded the truck, and after lunch, the family started unpacking the rest of the boxes.
It was evening when everyone headed to their separate homes. There were several boxes left to be unpacked, clothes and items to be organized, but Kit and Randolph were exhausted. The only room that was mostly put together was their bedroom area.
Randolph and Kit went about their normal, nightly routines. Kit walked out of the bathroom as Randolph started to turn down the covers on the bed.
“What a great day, I’m exhausted.”
Kit chuckled. “Me too. It was so wonderful to have the entire family here, helping us put together our home. I can’t believe we live here in this beautiful house. I’m so happy we decided to do this.”
“Me too. Thank you for being apart of my life. I am delighted to be taking this next step with you.” Randolph started to crawl into bed.
“Randolph, what are you doing?”
“I believe I am getting into our bed, which I share with my girlfriend, with whom I also share a home.”
“That’s my side.” Kit pointed to the side of the bed that he had just occupied.
“Since when was this side your’s?”
“Since I fell in love with those windows and decided I wanted to sleep next to them.”
Randolph wiggled as he settled deeper into the bed. “I don’t know. I kind of like this side.”
Kit could see the spark in is eye. She could also see he wasn’t willing to budge quite so easily. “Randolph, honey, I’m going to need you to move to ‘your’ side of the bed.”
“Make me.”
That was all Kit needed. She was never one to shy away from a challenge. Randolph loved a challenge as well, he also loved to win, but for Kit he would be willing to lose. Especially, since she had crawled on top of him, kissing him hard. Her kisses slid down his neck and her hand trailed across his bare chest. Creeping lower and lower until her nibble fingers slipped beneath the waistband of his pajama pants. Randolph inhaled sharply at the contact of her fingers on the sensitive skin of his lower abdomen.
When their night came to an end, Kit had managed to roll Randolph to the side of the bed away from the windows. She was curled into his chest, perfectly content with her life, on her side of the bed next to the windows, in the house she shared with the greatest love of her life.

Chapter 13: Birthday
Notes:
Sorry everyone, life has really taken over the last couple weeks. Hoping to update my other story sometime this week.
Not sure this is that great, but it was running through my head and had to get it out.
Chapter Text
It wasn’t that she really cared or that she wanted the attention, but Kit had been in a mood all morning, as it seems that Randolph forgot it was her birthday. Her own birthdays were never a big thing to her, though she did like to use it as an excuse to have a nice dinner with her family. Plus one of her secret indulges was rich, chocolate cake. But all and all she didn’t really care about celebrating her birthday, she just figured Randolph would at least acknowledge it.
She loved to spoil her family and friends on their birthdays. Her sense of occasion was rather strong when it came to the people she loved. Randolph had woken up with breakfast in bed, presents and dinner with the family, and a nightcap and back massage to close the evening on his birthday. This morning for Kit was no different than any other morning. Randolph woke up first as usual, brought her her morning coffee and laptop so she could catch up on the latest happenings around the world. Then he proceeded with his morning routine. He had an early morning meeting, so before leaving he gave her a kiss and told her to have a good day. Nothing more.
When she arrived at her office, she thought maybe she would find flowers or a card, but again nothing. Their lunch date came around and Randolph spent their time talking about his meeting, asking Kit about her nursing staff search. Never a word or even a hint that he remembered her birthday. She was sitting at her desk not in the mood to read through the financial reports on her desk. She didn’t expect anything big, just an acknowledgment would do, but the lack there of was bugging her more than it should.
Sitting at her desk all alone wasn’t really helping her mood, she decided that going for a walk might help her get out of her funk. Returning 30 minutes later, she was wrong. While walking around the hospital several staff members noticed her mood and few even acquired about it, asking if everything was alright. Closing the door and grabbing the financial reports she headed to the couch, losing her shoes in the process, she figured she could bury her bad mood in something productive.
——————
Word had made it to the ER that Dr. Voss was in a bad mood. Conrad had heard whispering at the nurses station and around the corner amongst the residents, all wondering what was up with Dr. Voss. Some talks even suggested Bell having broke up their relationship. Conrad found that hard to believe being that Bell was completely smitten by Kit. She held him in the palm of her hand and his heart belonged only to her. Conrad decided he needed to find out what was going on for himself so he set off in a search for Bell.
Finding him in his office as Conrad hoped, Bell noticed him as soon as he entered the office. “Hey Dr. Hawkins, what do I owe the pleasure?”
“It’s Kit.” Randolph immediately stood up from his desk, ready to spring into action. Before he could don his superhero cape, Conrad held up his hands to stop him. “It’s nothing serious, I hope, but word in the ER is she is in a bad mood today. Do you know what is going on?”
“We had lunch together a couple hours ago and everything seemed fine then.”
“Do you think that you should check on her? I’m just wondering if we should change plans for her birthday if she isn’t feeling well or if something happened on the CEO front that needs her attention more.”
“No, I’m sure everything is fine, I’ll go check on her. Everything is still on for tonight. I have a feeling I know what’s going on, I- I may be the reason for her foul mood. I haven’t acknowledged her birthday today because I have been too worried about spoiling the surprise. Let everyone know that everything is fine, I’ll take care it.”
“Good luck. I’ll see you later this evening. Gigi can’t wait to give Aunt Kit her present.”
——————
When Randolph reached Kit’s office he found her door closed, which was unusual. She typically only had it closed during an important meeting and he knew that she didn’t have anything scheduled afternoon. She must really be in a bad mood if she shut the door, he felt like an idiot but knew what he had planned would make up for it. Knocking, he waited for Kit’s response.
“Come in.”
He found her laying on the couch, head propped up on pillows, reading through some reports.
“Hey.”
She leaned her head back so she could see him before responding with “Randolph, can I help you?”
Shit. Her tone told him everything, he had really screwed up. He was so excited for what he had planned for her, he knew that if he even mentioned her birthday he would spoil the surprise. Walking around the couch, he lifted her bare feet, sat down, and placed them in his lap. He rubbed his hands together to warm them up first then he took her foot and started working his thumbs into her arch.
“Word around the hospital is you’re having a bad day.”
Kit sighed, she knew it would get to him eventually. “I’m fine. There is nothing wrong, you can head back to your office now.”
“Kit,” drawing out her name and pausing until he had her attention, “I’m not leaving until you tell me what’s bothering you.”
“It’s nothing, it’s stupid honestly. Randolph I’m fine, just a case of melancholy.”
“You know you can tell me anything Kit.”
“I know and Randolph, truly, I’m fine.”
“Okay, if you say so. If it’s alright with you, I would like to take you out to a nice dinner tonight.”
Kit moaned has Randolph’s thumbs dug deeper into her feet. “That sounds lovely.”
Randolph was happy she agreed because he was worried he may have made her too angry and she wouldn’t be willing to go and then his whole plan would be ruined. He took her other foot into his hands, working the tender flesh for awhile. When he got up he told her that he was going to get his stuff to head home and that he would meet her there, then they would drive to the restaurant together. He leaned down and kissed her forehead, telling her to not be too long, that he would have a reservation for 6:00.
——————
Dinner had been lovely, Randolph had a reservation at her favorite Italian place downtown. Luckily, Kit’s mood had improved throughout the evening even though Randolph still had yet to mention her birthday. Pulling up to their home, nothing seemed to be any different than when they left.
“Kit, it’s a nice evening, would you like to join me on the patio for a nightcap?” Randolph was already pulling two wine glasses out of cabinet.
“That would be nice.”
Randolph handed her a glass after pouring their drinks. He took her free hand and they headed outside.
“Surprise!!” Waiting on the patio was Kit’s family, Randolph’s family, and many of their coworkers.
Kit stood shocked, she hadn’t expected to see her coworkers and family standing in the backyard. She looked at Randolph completely surprised.
“Happy birthday babe.” He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek, squeezing her hand in the process. “You thought I forgot didn’t you?” He smirked, very pleased with himself.
“Honestly, yes. You planned all this? Randolph this is wonderful, thank you.”
Randolph gave her a quick kiss on the lips, then whispered in her ear. “You’re very welcome. I love you Kit. Now go enjoy your evening and later I’ll give you your present.”
Pulling back, he winked at her. Heat instantly shot through her. She loved this man, even when he irritated her.
Chapter 14: New Addition
Chapter Text
It was late into the night when he heard the buzzing coming from Kit’s nightstand. He nudged Kit trying to get her to wake up. “Kit your phone.”
She murmured, rolling over and reaching for her phone, she answered it.
“Hello.”
“Mom, sorry I know it’s late. I’ve started having contractions. They aren’t that close together yet, but do you think you and Randolph could head over our way.”
“Yes, sweetie, we will be right there.”
Randolph had sat up, switching the lamp next to him on. “Molly?”
“Yes, it seems our new grand baby is about to make it’s arrival. Molly said she hasn’t been in labor long but would appreciate it if we came over now to watch Josie.”
They both got out of bed and started changing into other clothes and grabbing a few essentials. While driving over, Randolph reached for Kit’s hand. “You okay?”
“Yes, just nervous and excited.”
“Everything will be fine and I am excited too.” Kit gave him a small smile. Her heart warmed watching him with Sammie and Josie. Neither were related to him by blood, but he loved them nonetheless. She loved that he instantly turned into a big softie anytime the grandkids were around.
When they arrived, the house was mostly dark, Josie was asleep and they didn’t want to wake her. Greeting Molly and Derek, they both check on Molly as worried parents and doctors. Wishing them the best and to keep them updated, the two expecting parents headed out. The new baby had been a surprise. Molly and Derek had wanted a second child when Josie was younger, but they didn’t have any luck. So years later when they weren’t trying, they were very surprised and delighted by another baby.
Due to the unanticipated arrival of a new baby, Molly and Derek had to convert their guest room into a nursery. At this time a bigger house wasn’t an option for them, and their guest room wasn’t used that much anyway. But at the moment, it left Kit and Randolph without a place to sleep. Derek and Molly could have brought Josie over, but Kit and Randolph’s house was in the opposite direction of the hospital. They thought about putting Josie in the car and taking her themselves, but as they both stood in her bedroom doorway, neither had the heart to wake her.
“I say we just get some sleep on the couch. I really don’t want to wake her, plus it isn’t something we aren’t both use to. How many times have one of us slept on the couch in your office.” Randolph whispered, not wanting to disturb Josie.
“I agree, come on darling.” Kit grabbed Randolph’s hand and led him done the hall. They stopped at a linen closet, pulling out a few blankets and extra pillows.
“So how are we going to do this so both our backs aren’t killing us come morning? Neither of us is as young as we liked to think we are.” Standing in front of the couch, Kit was trying to figure out the best way to lay down.
“I’ll lay on the couch and you can lay in my arms.”
After some maneuvering, they were able to find a place where they both were comfortable. Kit snuggled in a little deeper to Randolph’s embrace as she pulled the blanket around them tighter. They settled in and fell asleep. That’s where Josie found them in the morning.
“Grandma. Grandpa Bell. What are you doing here? Where’s mom and dad?” She stood in the middle of the living room, still in her pajamas, hair tousled from sleep.
Kit lifted her head off of Randolph’s chest, both groaning as the stiffness of sleeping on the couch set in as they sat up.
“Good morning sweetheart. Your mom and dad are at the hospital. Your little brother or sister is going to be arriving soon.”
“Really?! Can we go see the baby?”
“Not yet honey. The baby isn’t here yet, but once he or she arrives we will.”
Josie had obvious disappointment across her face. She was so excited to be a big sister. She had promised to help feed it, clean it, and even change diapers. She couldn’t wait to read bedtime books to her new sibling and go play at the park when he or she grew up.
Noting the obvious disappointment, Randolph threw out an idea. “Hey kiddo, why don’t we make some pancakes for breakfast and then we can find a board game to play while we wait.”
“Pancakes? Grandpa Bell, can we put chocolate chips in them?”
“Absolutely! You want to help me?” Josie nodded and Randolph took her hand as they headed to the kitchen.
While the two got busy in the kitchen making breakfast, Kit took care of the extra blankets and pillows. She could hear Randolph instructing Josie on what to get out and how much of each ingredient was needed. Kit wandered to the kitchen, leaning up against the doorway, watching the two go through the process of making pancakes. Their backs where to her, so neither saw they had an audience. Randolph had Josie’s hand in his as he showed her how to carefully flip the pancakes. If she wasn’t already married to him, so would marry him again right now.
She watched them a little longer before joining them and setting the table. The trio ate breakfast together, chocolate chip pancakes, eggs, and bacon. After breakfast, the three changed out of their sleep clothes and Josie and Randolph started a game of chess. Kit was scrolling through emails on her phone when she got a text from Derek. All it contained was a picture of a sweet baby laying on Molly’s chest. She gasped with excitement, tears coming to her eyes.
“Everything alright?” Randolph was concerned, but was pretty sure it was happy tears in her eyes.
“Josie I believe you are officially a big sister.” She held her phone up for the other two to see. Josie squealed and started asking all kinds of questions.
Kit chuckled, “I don’t know, sweetie, why don’t you go get your shoes and we will go find out.”
Josie continued her series of questions as they walked through the hospital. Kit answered as many of the questions as she could, all while Josie walked between her and Randolph, holding their hands.
“Here we are.” Josie quickly let go of Kit and Randolph’s hands, making a beeline to her mom and new sibling.
“Hey my sweet girl. Would you like to meet your baby sister?”
“A sister?!”
“Yes, this is your sister, Hailey Kit Ingrams.”
Kit gasped, Randolph squeezed her hand, giving her a big grin.
“I don’t remember the last time anyone called you Elizabeth, mom. Kit seemed more fitting.”
“I don’t know what to say. I’m very honored, darling.” Tears coming to her eyes again.
“Mom can I hold Hailey?”
The little family spent time passing Hailey around, each doting over how precious she was. When lunch time came around, Derek took Josie to the cafeteria to get something to eat. Molly was napping, leaving Hailey to Randolph and Kit. Kit was standing by the window, Hailey tucked into her embrace and her finger running over her little cheek. Randolph was standing next to her and leaned over to kiss her on the cheek.
“Congratulations grandma. She’s beautiful.”
“Isn’t she though?”
“Just as beautiful as her name sake.” Kit’s head turned to look at him, the corner of her mouth turning up.
“Would you like to hold her, gramps?”
“Absolutely. Give me that little cutie.”
Transferring Hailey over to Randolph, Kit went to get them something to drink. When she returned, she found Randolph sitting in the chair, Hailey nestled in his elbow, as he talked to her. He told her about how she has the best parents, an amazing grandma, a great big sister, and that he promised to be a good grandpa. He was so engrossed in his conversation with Hailey, he hadn’t noticed Kit had returned, or that Molly was now awake. Both women watched him interact with the newest member of their family. The serene of the moment was broken when Josie and Derek returned from lunch.
“Mom we brought you something to eat, also can I hold Hailey again before we leave?”
Kit and Randolph excused themselves, leaving the now family of four to have some time alone together. The pair made their way to their favorite lunch spot and would return to get Josie after they ate. When they returned, they said their goodbyes, Randolph took a reluctant Josie’s hand as he started to lead her out of the room, promising to finish their chess game and that there was a good possibility for ice cream later.
Kit leaned down to give Molly a kiss, telling her to rest and that she was proud of her. Molly caught Kit’s hand. “He’s a wonderful man, mom. I’m so happy you found him.”
“I know, me too. Aren’t we both lucky to have wonderful, loving men and two amazing daughters? I love you sweetheart, we’ll see you tomorrow.”
When they returned to Molly and Derek’s, Josie took off to get the chess game that they were going to finish before heading to Randolph and Kit’s place for the evening. Randolph started to follow her when Kit grabbed his hand, pulling him back to her, she wrapped her arms around him. Randolph was puzzled by what warranted this need to be close, not that he was complaining, but he searched her eyes for answers.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Just being the wonderful man you are. I love you.” She tilted her chin up to kiss him.
“Ewww. Grandma, grandpa Bell!”
They pulled back, grinning like two fools in love. “We’ll talk about how wonderful I am later.” He winked at her. Earning a smack to the chest and an eye roll as a response. She shook her head at him as he headed towards the coffee table, where Josie had placed the chessboard.
“Alright kiddo, I believe it’s your turn.”
Chapter 15: Matching Shirts
Notes:
I was reading through a list of prompts and found wearing matching shirts. It was also the same day that the photo of Bruce, Jane, and Jessica had on matching shirts, thus this story.
Chapter Text
Randolph had been talking about the concert for months. When he saw the farewell tour of one of his favorite bands was running through Atlanta, he started begging Kit to go with him. Everyday he would check to see if ticket sales had opened yet and when they did he bought tickets right away. In the car, while preparing dinner, in his office, it really didn’t matter, he had their greatest hits playing on repeat. Kit thought she might go crazy. It wasn’t that she didn’t like the band’s music, she was just tired of hearing the same songs everyday for weeks on end.
The week of the concert was finally here and Randolph was acting like a child. He couldn’t stop talking about the band; the first time he heard their music, when he went to their concert for the first time, fun facts about each member. He had all the details already planned, from what time they were leaving and where they would eat beforehand. Kit couldn’t help but laugh at him, plus she found it kind of cute that he was this excited for a concert.
It was mid-afternoon and Kit was changing into the clothes she planned on wearing to the concert. She found a pair of black jeans and black ankle boots. She put on a white v-neck and grabbed a cardigan to take with her in case the night got cool. Randolph was already in the living room, dressed for the concert in jeans that hugged him well and a band t-shirt. She would never admit to him that she really enjoyed how he looked in jeans; she wouldn’t want it to go to his head.
Kit walked into the living room, cardigan draped over her arm and purse slung over her shoulder. “I’m ready when you are.”
“You’ll need to change first before we go.”
“Excuse me. What is wrong with what I’m wearing?” Kit held her arms out to her side, trying to make sure he could see what she was wearing.
“Absolutely nothing. You know I like when you wear your black jeans, but I got you something.” The childish grin spreading across his face.
“You did what?”
“Here, put this on.” Randolph took ahold of the black material sitting next to him on the couch. He held up the shirt in front of him, obviously in her size.
“You got us matching shirts?”
“Yes, is that a problem.”
Kit grinned, letting out a small laugh. “No. I just wasn’t expecting you to get a shirt for me.”
“Go put it on.” Randolph was almost giddy as he tossed her the shirt across the room.
Kit changed into the t-shirt Randolph bought her and they headed to dinner. The sports bar around the corner from the arena was one of Randolph’s favorite casual restaurant, mainly because they had a good selection of liquor. They ordered their food and a couple whiskeys to enjoy while they settled in to conversations about favorite things growing up. Randolph was surprised when Kit said one of her favorite things was playing field hockey growing up. He had no idea that she had every played field hokey before, but it turns out she grew up playing. Randolph talked about how he taught himself to play guitar when he was 10.
When they got to the concert, Randolph went and bought them a couple beers. They found their seats and enjoyed the opening act. When the lights went down and the low rumble of the band’s first song started, Kit reached over and placed a hand on Randolph’s jiggling knee. She smiled at him and he stopped moving his leg. Then it started, the lights shot on, the first note sang through the guitar, and Randolph jumped to his feet with the roar of the crowd.
Kit stood with him so she could see. She spent most of the time watching him and listening to him sing along. She loved his singing and wished he would do it more often. At one point, she reached over, tucking her hand into his back pocket, thumb sliding into his belt loop. He turned and looked at her, smiling. He was so happy to be at the concert and to have Kit by his side. He laced his arm around her waist, hand on her hip, pulling her close. She surprised him by singing along as well. He gave her a look of shock because had never heard her sing before. He was pleased to find she had a beautiful voice.
When the concert ended, they headed back to their car. Kit’s hand again found his back pocket on their walk. He felt her shiver.
“Are you cold?”
“Yes, I forgot my cardigan in the bedroom when I went to change into this shirt.”
“Here.” Randolph removed his leather jacket and helped her into it. It was too big for her and it swallowed her. But Randolph didn’t care, he still found her incredible sexy.
“Thank you for going to the concert with me.” He reached for her, this time his hand was the one to find her back pocket.
“You are very welcome. I actually enjoyed it.” She leaned into his side and he gave her a big grin.
“I’m glad you enjoyed it. I am also glad that you wore the shirt I got for you.”
She chuckled, “It was a good night. I’m glad you wore these jeans.” She reached her hand over, pulling at one of his belt loops.
“And I am glad you wore these jeans.” He gave her butt a light squeeze and Kit jumped slightly with surprise. As far as he was concerned, their night was far from over.
Chapter 16: I'm Fine
Chapter Text
The morning light streamed through the bedroom curtains. Kit squeezed her eyes shut trying to block the light, delaying getting up. When sleep was coming no more, she swung her legs off the side of the bed with a groan. The pain shot up her leg as she sat up. She threw her head back, taking in a deep breath; mustering up the strength to stand up. She stood, a hand on the bed still holding her up as her leg throbbed. On the way to the bathroom, Kit groaned with every step.
Randolph heard her get up and when he heard the bathroom door open he opened one eye to see her emerge. He watched her slowly limp over to the closet. His voice was gruff with sleep, “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine darling, go back to sleep.” He sat up, leaning back on his elbows. Not buying her ‘fine’ comment.
“Why are you limping?”
“It- It’s nothing. I think I slept on my leg wrong, but I’m fine.”
Kit continued with her morning routine, getting dressed for the day. Randolph still eyed her suspiciously, especially since she came out of the closet wearing flats instead of her normal heels. But wasn’t going to press it, he knew that eventually she would tell him what was wrong. She headed towards the kitchen to start the coffee while he got dressed for the day.
The day was relatively light. Randolph had a scheduled surgery this morning, but found the rest of his day pretty open. Later in the morning, Conrad caught up to him. “Hey is something going on with Kit?”
“What? Why do you ask?” Randolph was concerned that he had missed something or that Conrad knew something he didn’t.
“Well, first off I noticed that she was wearing flats today when she showed up today, then I saw her immediately change into her scrubs and tennis shoes, and I thought I saw her walking with a limp.”
“Yeah, I noticed that this morning. She said she was fine, but I could tell she was hurting. I don’t really know what is going on.” Randolph was thinking that it was about time for lunch and he should probably go find Kit for their usual lunch date.
“Well, if she needs me to look her over, let me know. I would be happy to examine her if something is wrong.”
“Thanks Conrad. I’ll let her know.”
Randolph headed to Kit’s office to see if she was ready for lunch. “Hey hon, you ready to go grab some lunch?”
“Yes, just let me finish this email.”
When Kit finally stood up, he noticed that she was still limping. “You want to tell me what’s going on with your leg?”
“I told you this morning, I’m fine.” As she passed him, she gave him a kiss on the cheek trying to reassure him. He grabbed her wrist when she continued on, stopping her in her tracks.
“Oh no, you are not fine. Conrad even noticed that you wore flats today, then immediately changed into your scrubs when you got here. He also noticed that you were walking with a limp. He said he would be happy to examine you if need be.”
Kit’s back was still to him. She sighed, tilting her head back. “Randolph, please just let it go. I’m fine.”
He could tell this was something that she didn’t want to discuss at the moment, but he was not going to let it go when they got home.
“Okay Kit, I let this go all day, but I would really like you to tell me what’s going on with your leg. It’s not like you to not talk to me about things.” They were in their bedroom, getting ready for bed. “And if you tell me you’re fine again, so help me.”
Kit sighed and then groaned as she sat on the end of the bed. Randolph came around and stood in front of her. “It’s embarrassing.”
Randolph was shocked, this was not how he expected this conversation to go. “Embarrassing?”
“Yes, I- I’ve always, I mean I have never. God, getting old sucks.”
Randolph chuckled at her. “So it’s just a case of being old? Not that you are old.” He gave her a smirk so she knew he was teasing.
“No, apparently I am not as flexible as I use to be.” She gave him a pointed look, hoping he would understand and she wouldn’t have to actually say it.
“Okay. You’re going to have to give me more babe.”
She closed her eyes, then spewed it out as fast as she could. “I pulled a muscle last night during sex.”
Randolph started laughing. “This is not funny Randolph! I have been walking around all day with a sex injury. Stop laughing.”
“I’m sorry babe, but it is kind of funny. I mean you had to wear flats and your scrubs today because we got a little rambunctious last night.” His eyebrows shot up in a teasing manner.
“We? You were the one that put my leg on your shoulder.”
“True, but you can’t say you didn’t enjoy it.” The smirk on his face showed that he was thinking about last night.
Kit rolled her eyes. “So help me God, if you don’t wipe that smug smirk off you face…”
Randolph leaned over her, hands resting next to her hips on the bed, as he moved his forehand mer centimeters from hers. He’s blue eyes locked in with her brown. “What are you going to do? You’re injured. All because I had your calf resting on my shoulder as I watched you…”
She pushed him back with both hands, not letting him finish that comment. He started laughing again as he stood back up. She wasn’t going to let him get away with this. Not only had he injured her last night, but now he was teasing her about it. She stood with a groan, that wasn’t as sexy as she hoped. She placed her hands on his shoulders.
“Fine. Yes, I did enjoy it. And because I was walking around with a limp all day, all I could think about was my leg on your shoulder, your hands on my body, your lips on my neck, and you buried deep inside…”
Randolph grabbed her cheeks, pulling her into a crushing kiss; hoping to shut her up because if she kept talking there was no way he could resist her.
Chapter 17: Night Before
Summary:
The night before their wedding, Randolph and Kit spend some time together.
Notes:
I'm back... hopefully! Would love to add more to this story because let's be honest who doesn't love domestic Kitbell.
If you have any prompts for this send them my way.
Chapter Text
It was the night before their wedding. They had spent many nights discussing whether or not they both would be staying at the house the night before. After their 3 months apart, they both decided that they didn’t want to spend anymore time away from each other.
They were going through their nightly routines. Randolph in his pajama pants and Kit in her pajama set, standing in front of the bathroom mirror brushing their teeth. Their eyes met in the mirror and Kit stopped brushing. “What?”
Randolph slightly shook his head, “Nothing. I was just thinking about how incredibly lucky I am to be marrying you tomorrow.”
Still holding his eyes in the mirror, Kit finished brushing her teeth. After putting her toothbrush back in the holder, she wrapped her arms around him, cheek resting on his bare shoulder. She waited for him to finish brushing. When he was done, he wrapped his arms around her’s, leaning back into her embrace, never once braking eye contact from her.
“I’m very lucky too, darling.”
“We’re quite the pair aren’t we, twice divorced, well passed middle age.”
Kit squeezed him hard, “Speak for yourself.”
“Okay I’m well passed middle age and you are just as youthful as you were when you became a resident.”
“That’s better.”
“Can you believe that we are getting married tomorrow?” Randolph turned around so he could take Kit into his arms. She placed her hands on his chest.
“It’s pretty remarkable isn’t it? You know when you first reached out to me to join Chastain, I thought that I was a fool to be accepting your offer. I knew your reputation of being Atlanta’s most eligible surgeon and I was worried that your ego would interfere with my work. But over time I realized that you were more than an egotistic bastard, and somewhere along the way I had fallen in love with you.”
“You do know that I didn’t reach out to you to join Chastain because I was attracted to you. I mean don’t get me wrong, I definitely was, but I wanted you at my hospital because you are the best orthopedic surgeon in Atlanta. And while my ego can get in the way sometimes, I did want my hospital to be the best there was, which meant recruiting the best.”
“Thank god for your ego, otherwise we might not be here today, the eve of our wedding.”
Randolph pulled her in to him, kissing her. Kit wrapped her arms around his neck. It didn’t take much before they both were out of breath.
“I know we are getting married tomorrow, but would you allow this to continue in our bed?”
The sheepish look on Randolph’s face was hard to resist. With a slight nod, Randolph reached up to release the clip that was holding Kit’s hair up. Kit took his hand and led him into the bedroom. At this point in their relationship, they both knew so much about the other. Kit knew that Randolph liked when she kissed his neck, he also liked when she ran her nails through his hair, or the fact that he preferred sex when she was on top. Randolph on the other hand knew that Kit had a thing for his hands, that she liked to cuddle after sex, and that she had a ticklish spot behind her knee.
Cuddled up, letting their bodies cool down, Kit laughed to herself when Randolph broke the silence. Surprisingly, Randolph was always pretty chatty after sex. Unlike any man she had been with before who would fall asleep the minute they finished; some of their deepest conversations came right after sex. It was almost like Randolph felt safe enough in their connection with one another to open up.
“You know Kit, I don’t think I have ever asked you how you ended up in Atlanta to begin with.”
“Well it’s simple, medical school. I came here for med school and fell in love with Atlanta and in love with Brett. Even after Brett and I divorced, my girls were here and so was my career at that point.”
“Did you ever consider moving back to England?”
“Once. Soon after my second divorce. My girls were grown and out on their own and I thought maybe a change of scenery was what I needed. I had a job all lined up and a place to live. It was all close to where I grew up and I was excited to get back to familiar places.”
“What changed your mind?”
Kit rolled over so she was now facing him. There was a lamp still on that dimly lite the room. She searched his eyes for a second before deciding to continue.
“I had boxes with me one day, ready to pack up my office when I noticed I had a voicemail on my phone. It was another job offer. It would give me the change of scenery I was needing, a new challenge I was desperately looking for, and I would be able to stay closer to my children.”
“Who was the voicemail from?”
“You, darling.” She kissed him as a point of emphasis.
“Seriously? I didn’t know that when I reached out to you that you were in the process of moving to England.”
Randolph pulled her a little closer, realizing that if he hadn’t called her with his job offer when he did, they wouldn’t be where they were right now.
“I was. Had you called two days later, my answer would have been no, because I would have already been on a plane back to England. But as I’ve told you before, I love Atlanta. This place has too many memories, so when you called I realized that I didn’t really want to go back to England, this was my home now, I just needed a change.”
Randolph laid his forehead against hers, “I’ve never been so happy to have needed a new surgeon. I can’t imagine what my life would be without you.”
“One phone call darling, was the difference between now and what could have been.”
“I cannot wait to marry you.”
“Only a few more hours and I’m all yours.”
“Forever?”
“Forever, love. Now get some sleep, I want my husband looking his best on our wedding day.”
“Yes dear.” Randolph gave her one more kiss before pulling her in close and letting sleep take over. Tomorrow they would be husband and wife, forever connected, and eve grateful to a single phone call.
Chapter 18: We Shouldn't be Doing This
Chapter Text
It was the night of the awards ceremony. When Kit had called Randolph into her office a few weeks ago, he was surprised to see Marshall there as well. They both informed him that he would be receiving the lifetime of service award, for which he was grateful and utterly shocked. He had dedicated his life to Chastain, but felt undeserving do to past transgressions. Thankfully, he was a better doctor, a better man now, all because of the woman who would be gracing his arm tonight.
He was standing in their closet in front of a full length mirror, working on getting his tie just right. His eyes wondered to the empty garment bag that was hanging on Kit’s side of the closet. All week long it had been tantalizing him; wanting to pull the zipper down just a smidge to seek a peek at what hung inside. He knew it had to be something wonderful considering how great Kit’s clothes normally were.
He finally heard the bathroom door click open. He peeked his head around the closet doorway to see Kit standing in their bedroom, silver, sparkling gown gracing her body. Her hair delicately curled, falling in soft waves over her shoulders. The slit on the side ending mid thigh. She was breathtaking and he still wasn’t sure how he got so lucky to have her as his wife. He watched her walk over to the dresser to pick up her rings; sliding them down in place.
He finally stepped out of the closet, “You are beautiful and I love this dress.”
His hands reached out and settled on her hips, pulling her close. “Thank you darling and you look very dapper.”
The corner of mouth twitched at her word choice. Many years ago she had said the very same thing in his office, teasing, flirting with the lines of professionalism. He shook his head slightly at her, trying to pull himself back from the memories of that night. Her hands snaking their way up his chest were helping to bring him back to reality. When she reached his tie, still undone, she pulled him in for a light kiss; not wanting to mess up her lipstick.
When she pulled back, her long and delicate fingers made good use of tying his bow tie. Once she finished, she locked eyes with him, patting his chest one more time before walking over to grab her clutch off the chair by the window. She walked past him, hand lacing her fingers into his; pulling ever so slightly toward the door, looking back over her shoulder, “Shall we?”
Randolph’s smile started at his lips but worked its way up to his eyes. Tonight was going to be difficult, he could tell already. They had gone to many functions before, as colleagues, as friends, as a couple; but this was their first as husband and wife. Now it seemed they had permission to be as touchy and flirty as they wanted; the were newlyweds for goodness sake.
The dinner was grand, as he knew it would be considering Kit’s hand in planning the event. After they finished eating, there was some time before the awards ceremony. Their table had been serviced first, so the remainder of the guests were still enjoying their meal. Kit excused herself to go freshen up before the ceremony started and she needed to be on stage. Randolph watched her walk away, the shimmer in her dress pulling him in. He also excused himself, making up some story about going to talk to the other guests of honor before the ceremony. It was all a lie to follow Kit without too much suspicion.
When Kit exited the restroom, she was greeted with Randolph leaning up against the opposite wall.
“What are you doing here?” The humor could be heard in her voice.
“I missed you.”
She rolled her eyes at him, “I was only gone for a few minutes.”
“Seemed like a lifetime to me. Come here.”
Grabbing her hand, he pulled her around the corner into an empty side room.
“Randolph, what is this all about.”
“This.”
He took her face between his hands, pulling her in tight for a heated kiss. Kit dropped her guard, leaning into him. Hands laced around his neck, his finding purchase in her hair. The kiss gained more steam as they went. A couple of minutes had passed before Kit finally pulled back, resting her forehead against this.
Through staggered breath she spoke, “We really shouldn’t- be doing this.”
“Why not?”
“Because we are in public and there is and entire room of people waiting for the ceremony to start.”
“First off, I don’t see anyone else around here but you. Secondly, the ceremony can’t start without the guest of honor and the CEO and last time I checked that was us.”
Kit lightly slapped his chest. “You’re incorrigible. What am I going to do with you?”
Pulling Kit impossibly closer, moving his head to whisper in her ear, “I was hoping you would have your way with me.”
His voice dropped an octave, sending heat all throughout her body. She met his lips with another heated kiss, then using the last of her resolve pulled away.
“We really shouldn’t be doing this. We need to get back to the ceremony and I need to go freshen up again.”
The puppy dog look Randolph was currently giving her was hard to resist, but she pushed back on his chest. Palms still resting just inside his tuxedo jacket, keeping him at arms length, she eyed him for a minute before completely stepping away. The loss of contact sent a ping of want coursing through their bodies.
As she reached the door, she looked back at him, “If you behave yourself for the rest of the evening, I’ll have my way with you when we get home. Also, I’ll let you see what I may or may not have on under this dress.”
She turned and left, leaving him standing there trying to control his reeling mind. He was regretting not slipping his hand beneath the slit of her dress during their make out session. He knew tonight would be difficult, she told him to behave and promised a delicious reward in return; but the concept of behaving was becoming more complicated by the second, considering she had just alluded to the fact that she wasn’t wearing much under her dress. At that thought, he almost sprinted back to his seat, thinking to himself the sooner this was over, the sooner he could take his wife home.
Chapter 19: Pain we Feel
Chapter Text
Randolph’s most recent MS flare up was one that brought on pain, dizziness, blurry vision. As much as it pained him physically, he was also struggling emotionally. He knew he needed to go back to Minnesota for treatments again, but it meant another long period away from Kit. Now that they were married, being away from his wife carried a heavier weight. Randolph had gone to work this morning to square away care for his current patients. Kit had taken the day off, so upon his return, they could spend his last day in Atlanta together and also, she could help him finish his packing.
Randolph had woken early, wanting to take care of business at the hospital as soon as possible so he had more time with Kit. Kit woke to an empty bed. She reached for the spot where he normally slept, finding the sheets vacant and cold. She sighed, realizing that this would be her normal for the time being; waking up alone.
She would miss their morning routine; Randolph waking up first, bring her coffee and her laptop, them taking turns in the bathroom, her making something for them to eat in the morning, and the goodbye kiss either at the door or her office. All of that would be remised as he was away in another state. She didn’t mean for the tears to start forming in her eyes, but she couldn’t stop them. She missed him already and he hadn’t even left yet.
She decided that she needed some time to herself; collect her thoughts and emotions before Randolph returned. She didn’t want to spoil their last day together by being an emotional wreck. She headed to the bathroom, a good shower would pull her back together. As she discarded her pajamas the thought of a nice warm bath was more appealing. Starting the water, finding the right temperature, before adding a bath bomb to the water.
She clipped her hair up, not wanting to spend time drying it later; she stepped into the warm water. Slipping beneath the surface, warmth and bubbles enveloped her. Kit closed her eyes, leaning her head back against the bath pillow, and tried to calm her racing mind. To no success, the pain of missing her husband settled in her chest. A hand emerged from the water trying to cover the sob that escaped her. Her whole body shook with each cry leaving her mouth. She pulled her knees up to her chest, hugging her legs tight, laying her cheek on her knees.
The sobs were endless it seemed. The pain of missing her husband, the cruelty of this damning disease, the loss of what should be their happily ever after. It all was released through every cry leaving her body.
“Kit?”
Her head shot up at the sound of his voice, quickly trying to pull herself together, wiping the snot and tears from her face.
“Darling you’re home.”
Sniffling, still wiping the evidence of her crying from her face. She started to reach for the the drain plug, only to be stopped by Randolph’s hand on hers. He had left his perch in the doorway and was now starting to kneel by the tub. She had been crying so hard, that she hadn’t noticed he was back home. Randolph was kneeling next to the tub when he reached out and wiped the remaining tears from her face. He tucked a loose strained of hair that had slipped from the clip behind her ear.
“You want to tell me what this is all about? I have a feeling I know.”
“It’s nothing. I’m fine.”
“Kit.” He placed his palm on her cheek, thumb running along her cheekbone, “What I just walked in on was not nothing. Now, tell me what has you this worked up.”
“I’m sorry, I’m ruining our last day together by being an emotional mess. I know that this is what is best for you, but I selfishly do not want you to go. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I miss you already and you haven’t even left yet.”
A weak smile formed in the corner of his mouth. He felt the same, but knew she was in need of his comfort right now. The dam of her emotional wall had finally broke. She has been his rock through all of his MS flare ups and treatments, it was his turn to support her. He moved to sit, leaning back against the wall. He pulled her hand into his, his thumb tracing the place her rings normally sat.
“You have been so strong for me. Walking me through each step of my MS. Meeting my stubborn disposition with pushback and resolve. You have been my strength through all of this. I wouldn’t be here right now if it wasn’t for you. You, Kit, are the reason I have to go back to Minnesota. I want to be better, so that I get more days with you.”
The tears were back, but this time not as the full body sobs. Kit squeezed his hand, unable to speak at the moment.
“It’s okay to be upset about all of this, lord knows I haven’t always taken it well.” He paused, gauging her reaction. “So, how are we going to spend my last day in Atlanta.?”
“Join me?” Kit tugged his hand a little. The water was still warm and she wanted to be close to him.
“Gladly.”
Randolph stood with a few pops of joints and a groan. His struggle brought a gentle easy to both of them. He rid himself of his clothes before stepping in the tub behind her. Kit scooted forward to give him space before settling between his legs, wrapped in his arms. She sighed, leaning her head back onto his shoulder, burying her nose in his neck, trying to take in his scent as a way to remember being in his arms. Randolph held her tight, no words needed to be spoken now. They sat like that, Kit snuggled into his embrace, Randolph’s hands running up and down her body, soothing her, until the water started to cool.
“We should probably get out. The water is getting cold.” If as on cue, Kit shivered.
“I think you are right darling.” Kit turned in his arms and gave him a squeeze. “Thank you.”
“You do not need to thank me. I should be the one thanking you. Thank you for making me a better man and surgeon. Thank you for standing by me during all of this. Thank you for not backing down to the governor. Thank you for being my wife. And thank you for loving me enough to chase me down and refusing to let me get away.”
Each of his thank you’s were separated by a kiss to her forehead.
“Randolph I love you.”
“I love you too Kit. Now let’s get dried off so we can start our day together.”
“I was thinking that maybe we take this to the bedroom, then after, get cleaned up again and go get lunch.”
“I like the way you think Kit.” He reached down and pulled the drain plug.
She brought him close to kiss her squarely on the lips, turning to straddle his legs. Before long the idea of moving to their bedroom was forgotten and Kit reached behind her to start running warm water again. She made a mental note to take a bath again while he was away, her loneliness could be filled with the memory of this moment shared together.

Chapter Text
Over the last several years Randolph had learned many things about Kit Voss, but one of his favorite tidbits of information was that Kit was a Christmas fanatic. When they moved into their new house, Randolph was surprised that he found none of her Christmas decorations during the move. When he asked her about it, she just laughed and answered, “oh darling, I have an entire storage unit for that.”
It was true; an entire, climate controlled storage unit just for her Christmas decorations. Randolph was in the process of hauling in the last box from the car. It took him two trips to the unit to get everything and he was even driving their suv. Upon entering the house this time, he was met with the playing of Christmas music. Kit had finally finished cleaning the house and was ready to start decorating.
“I think that’s the last of it.” Randolph sat down the box he was carrying.
“Just in time. Thank you for going to get everything. I know it isn’t easy.”
Randolph walked over and gave her a kiss, “You’re welcome, and no it’s not. I think I may need a message later to ease my aching back from carrying all these boxes.”
“I think that can be arranged.” Kit snaked her arms around Randolph’s back, slipping her hands beneath his shirt. Delicate fingers running along his spine sent heat rolling through his body. She kissed him soundly before pulling her hands back. “But first, you have to help me decorate.”
“You’re such a tease.”
Mock shock came across her face, “I am not. If anyone is a tease in this relationship it is you my dear husband.”
“Really?! Last time I checked, my wife was winning in that department.”
“Oh darling, this isn’t a game.”
Kit turned and headed toward the stack of boxes with a little extra sway in her hips. Then she made a show of bending over to open the first box. He did a quick survey of the amount of boxes and mentally calculated how long this was going to take them because he was already looking forward to his reward for being the most helping husband.
“Let’s start with the decorations around the house and finish with the tree.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Music continued to fill the house as Kit instructed Randolph where to place certain items. This continued for quite some time until most of the boxes were empty. He had just finished putting up the wreath and lights on their porch when he came back in to find Kit up on a ladder hanging decorations from the upper shelves in their living room.
“You should have waited for me. You know you shouldn’t be climbing a ladder without someone to hold it.”
“Randolph I’m fine. I’m not that far off the ground. Could you hand me that on top of the box there?”
She pointed in the direction of the mistletoe, resting on the lid of an empty box. He brought it over to her with a mischievous grin in his face. He handed it to her and she reached to her side to place it above the doorway.
“Randolph.” The level of warning in her voice almost made him back done.
“What? I figured you needed a spotter.”
Randolph’s hand was planted firmly on her ass.
“Like I said, I’m fine.”
“I know you are.” His comment was met with a squeeze of his hand. Kit let out a little yelp.
“You are going to make me fall, which completely defeats the purpose of being a spotter.”
Randolph didn’t remove his hand as she finished securing the mistletoe. On her way down the ladder, he guided her with his hands on her hips. When she was safely back to the ground, she turned in his arms to face him.
“Come here.”
He pulled her by the hips to the open doorway. He kissed her with as much passion as he could until they broke the kiss, both breathless.
“What was that for?”
“I had to make sure the mistletoe was working properly because I plan on meeting my wife under the mistletoe a lot this Christmas season.”
His response was met with a light smack of her hand on his chest.
“Well Casanova, the only thing standing between you and your massage is the the tree. Shall we?”
Randolph stepped back, putting out his arm for her to lead the way. The next couple hours were spent singing along to the music still playing and decorating the tree. As promised, once they were finished, boxes left to be taking back to storage tomorrow, Kit lead Randolph to their bedroom for his massage. Both blissfully relaxed after their ‘massage’, headed back to the living room to enjoy the results of their labors. Randolph had thrown on his pajama bottoms and a tshirt, Kit was in yoga pants and a shirt. They curled up on the couch beneath a blanket, hot chocolate in hand, enjoying the twinkling lights on the tree.
Kit looked up at him from her spot curled into his side, “What is your favorite Christmas memory?”
“This one right here.”
She elbowed him slightly, “I’m serious Randolph.”
“So am I. Christmas was never fun as a child; you know that my parents didn’t have a ton of money. They both were always working on Christmas, so I spent many Christmas’s of my youth alone. All of my friends were spending time with their family’s. Then when I was out on my own, I always signed up to work on Christmas. Didn’t really have anyone to spend it with most of the time. So this one right here is my favorite; having my wife in my arms, relishing the beauty of Christmas.”
“I’m sorry that Christmas hasn’t been that good to you.”
“It’s okay. All of those past Christmas’s just make this one even better.” He gave her a small squeeze. “What is your favorite Christmas memory?”
“Remember that blizzard we had about 30 years ago; shut the whole city down?”
“Yeah I remember. I was stuck in back to back to back surgeries from car accidents. Spent two days stuck at the hospital.”
“Well, that Christmas I was off on maternity leave; I had just had Amelia a couple weeks before. We lost power and had to all sleep out by the fireplace, basically under the tree. I remember sitting on the couch with Amelia during one of her nighttime feedings, watching Brett and Molly sleep. They were bundled up under a mountain of blankets. I could only see Molly’s little head full of curls sticking out from under the covers. We left the tree on all night and I just sat there looking at my little family, watching the lights shimmer on the tree, the crackle of the fire and Amelia’s little noises as she ate were the only sounds. And I thought that maybe I could actually do this; be a wife, mother, surgeon. That moment, everything just felt right with the world and it was one of my happiest Christmas’s.”
“That sounds like a wonderful memory.”
“It is, but sadly, we all know how that ended and what once was a happy time I threw away.”
Randolph pulled her a little closer. “I thought we agreed that our past mistakes were just that, mistakes to be left in the past. We have discussed them and do not need to go through them again.”
“I know. While Christmas has some very happy memories for me, it also reminds me of how I’ve failed.”
“I would disagree. You are a wonderful mother and grandmother; I’ve seen it myself and your daughters have told me. You’re an exemplary surgeon and the best CEO Chastain has ever seen. And as for being a wife, I know we haven’t been married long, but you’re an incredible wife and I’m very lucky to have you in my life.”
“Thank you. You know, you are a pretty great stepdad, grandpa, husband, and surgeon yourself.”
“Just pretty great?”
“Astounding.”
“That’s better.”
Kit tilted her head up to kiss him. Even his ego couldn’t stop the love she has for him. The rest of their night was spent on the couch, wrapped in each other’s arms, enjoying the glimmers of light bouncing around the room, and the joy of the season filled their hearts with hope of many happy Christmas’s to come.
Notes:
Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you all have a fun, safe, and happy holiday!
Chapter 21: Elizabeth Katherine Voss
Chapter Text
Pain, searing pain, shot through her ankle. She had been in a hurry to get to work when her phone rang and in that moment of answering, the last step of the stairs was missed. She tumbled to the floor and instantly felt the fire scorching her lower leg. Rolling to a seated position, Kit rolled her pant leg up to take further stock of her ankle. The pain, throbbing, and the skin being warm to touch was already enough indication that the injury was not minor. Pressing her fingers into the tender flesh, swelling already setting in, she hissed and grimaced. No x-ray to confirm her diagnosis, but she was almost 100% sure it was broken.
She was unable to drive herself to the hospital so she scooted across the floor to her phone which had slid away from her in the fall. She scrolled through her contacts until she found the name she was searching for, he answered, his voice rough with sleep.
“Kit?”
“I’m sorry for waking you; I know it’s your day off.” Through gritted teeth she continued, “but I need your help. I fell and I’m pretty sure my ankle is broken.”
He wasn’t really listening when she first started talking, but the moan of pain she released when she finished had him springing out of bed, quickly reaching for some clothes to change into.
“Where are you?”
“I’m at home. It’s my right ankle so I can’t drive myself to the hospital. Can you come get me?”
“Yes, absolutely. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“Thank you.”
“Hang tight babe, I’ll be there soon.”
The pet name was new, but so was their relationship. They had only been dating for a few weeks and every new milestone they reached, even at her age, still surprised her.
Through the searing pain, she managed to stand on her left leg. The stairs, though the culprit of her injury, turned to be helpful in getting up. She hopped her way to the front door, unlocking it before hopping to the kitchen for a bag of ice. Randolph was at least 20 minutes away without traffic. Working her way to the couch, she propped her foot up on a pillow with the ice, and waited for Randolph. She made a call to her secretary, telling her she wouldn’t be in today, and a call to Conrad about her injury.
Trying not to think about the pain radiating up her leg, Kit laid her head back trying to think about anything else. Her phone dinged and she picked it up to see a text from Randolph. ‘I’m here. How can I get in?’ Kit responded back that the front door was unlocked and in seconds Randolph could be heard flinging the door open.
“Kit? Where are you? Why is your front door unlocked?”
“I’m on the couch. And I was able to unlock before I moved to the living room.”
Randolph rounded the corner and found where she was laying. He sat down next to her injured leg, trying not to move it too much, he looked the injured ankle over.
“You really think it’s broken?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Well, let’s get you to the car so we can have Conrad check you out. You know you should have stayed where you were until I got here. Moving could have made it worse.”
“It’s no more broken now than it was 20 minutes ago.”
“Still.”
“What was I supposed to do? I couldn’t have you going and breaking my front door down.”
“I would have found a way in.”
Kit sighed at his overly egotistic remarks before Randolph helped her to stand on her good leg, supporting her right side. Kit went to hop when Randolph stopped her. He bent down, one arm around her back and the other under her knees; he picked her up.
“Randolph put me down. I can…”
Before she finished, Randolph already had here securely in his arms. He carried her out to the car. Once she was settled in the passenger seat, he ran back inside to pick up her purse and phone, locked the front door, and was back in the driver’s seat in no time.
“How bad is the pain?”
“A nine.”
“Pretty bad then. Don’t worry I’ll have you to the hospital before you know it.”
“I believe it. How fast were you driving to get over here anyway? There is no way you made it to my house from your condo in 15 minutes without speeding.”
The blush started to creep up his neck; he had been caught. He knew he should have slowed down, but he could hear the pain in her voice when she called and he didn’t want her to suffer longer than she had too.
“I may have been speeding a little, but that doesn’t matter now. I made it didn’t I?”
Kit rolled her eyes at him before a moan of pain escaped from between her lips. His free hand reached for hers.
“If it helps, feel free to squeeze my hand.”
Kit’s only response was a light squeeze of his fingers.
When they reached the hospital, Randolph pulled into the ambulance bay.
“You cannot park here.”
“I’m not parking here. Once I have you settled inside I will moved my car.”
“Randolph, this area is not for cars to be dropping off people, it’s for emergency personnel.”
“Which we are and you’re the CEO.”
“Not in this instance and doesn’t matter at this point.” She countered both of his comments and glared at him from her seat next to him.
“Fine.” He realized he wasn’t going to win this argument, but he still wasn’t parking too far from the entrance. He pulled into her CEO designated spot. “Better?”
“Much.”
Randolph raced around to the other side, not wanting her to try and get out of the car on her own.
“You should probably go grab a wheelchair.”
“Why?”
Before she could respond, she was back in his arms, passenger door kicked shut behind him, and headed into the hospital.
“Randolph really. This is going to spark a lot of conversation; you carrying me into the emergency room.”
“It’s not like people don’t know about us.”
“I know, but this is a little much don’t you think darling?”
————————
After what seemed like hours, Kit was finally ready to be taken home. Conrad had examined her, x-rays confirmed her own diagnosis, and the bright blue cast now adorned her ankle. Luckily, surgery was not needed, it was a clean break that would heal in about 6 weeks. She had chosen the blue colored cast because it reminded her of Randolph’s eyes. When everything was squared away, her medication picked up, Randolph took her back home.
He helped here settle in, getting her anything she needed. When evening rolled around, he went to get them something to eat and to pick up a change of clothes. He was going to stay the night just in case she needed anything. When he returned to her house he went to open the front door, only to find it was locked. He rang the doorbell and a couple minutes later he could hear her crutches making their way across the entryway.
While Randolph had been gone, Kit had made a decision that only was solidified when he returned. When they finished eating their dinner, Kit reached for his hand.
“Thank you for your help today.”
“You’re welcome. Anything you need let me know.”
“I actually need you to do me a favor.”
“Name it.”
“Can you go over to the draw in my kitchen, closest to the wall, and bring me the zipper pouch that is in it?”
He returned with the pouch and she opened it, pulling out a key she handed it to him.
“While you were gone, I was thinking that you will probably be helping me out a lot, and that this would make it easier.”
“Is this a key to your house?”
“It is.”
His lip upturned in the corner before reaching a full smile. He was excited to be reaching this new point in their relationship; even it was triggered by the events of the day. Kit was rather guarded to who she let into her home, but she cared for Randolph very much and was hoping she wouldn’t come to regret this decision.
————————
The weeks were dragging on and Kit was becoming inpatient with the healing process. Whoever said that doctors make the worst patients had hit the nail on the head. Her normal tailored dress pants didn’t fit over her cast. She was frustrated by the lack of variety in her wardrobe now. She would wear a shirt when she needed to take care of official hospital business or her scrubs that had been cut open at the bottom when she didn’t have meetings with the board or donors.
She was tired of being chauffeured around, to and from the hospital. Always asking for a ride was not her idea of a good time. Many of times it was Randolph but when he was called in early or had to stay late she would catch a ride with someone else. Always needing assistance to go somewhere, using crutches at times and her knee scooter was starting to drive her crazy.
Seated on her couch, her stomach growled, telling her she should probably make dinner. Forgoing her crutches and scooter, Kit limped along on her cast into the kitchen. She knew she shouldn’t be walking around on her cast, but she didn’t care at this point. Occupied with making dinner, she hadn’t heard the front door open and close.
“Elizabeth Katherine Voss! What do you think you are doing?”
The use of her full name was rare and unexpected, her head snapped around to she Randolph standing in the kitchen with his hands on his hips.
“Making dinner.”
“You know very well that is not what I’m talking about. You should know better; you’re an orthopedic surgeon!”
“I’m so tired of always needing assistance. The cast comes off in a few days. All my weight is on my other foot right now and it’s so much easier making dinner without that damn scooter or crutches in my way.”
“You really should not be standing on your cast.”
“I’m fine.”
She started to protest more but was suddenly cut off by Randolph picking her up.
“Put me down! Randolph seriously!”
He did put her down, but not standing. He placed her on the bar stool across the island. He walked back to the other side, rolling up his sleeves in the process.
“I will finish dinner, while you stay off your feet.”
“I knew I would regret giving you that key.”
“I don’t know; I think you kind of like having a man come home and sweeping you off your feet.”
She reached across the island, the back of her hand making contact with his shoulder. Even if she enjoyed it, she would never admit it to him; at least not yet anyway.
Chapter 22: Morning Workout
Chapter Text
It was Sunday, which was a day that neither Randolph or Kit had to work. Meaning they had some free time for themselves to do things they missed out on during the week. Randolph was laying in bed, enjoying the lazy morning. Kit had been up for awhile; she always had a hard time sleeping in, even on her days off. Many years as a doctor and mother had made her adapt to functioning without much sleep. He heard her wake and change out of her pajamas; the sun was barely up so he knew it was early. He had decided to enjoy a few more hours of much needed sleep; rolling over, snuggling into the warmth she left behind, he started to doze. Before she left their bedroom she leaned down and kissed his forehead.
A couple hours later, Randolph was pulled from his slumber. Laying in bed, gazing out the bedroom windows, he finally decided it was time to get up. He changed into his workout clothes, sweats hanging loosely around his waist, soft t-shirt across his chest, and sneakers. Needing to fuel his workout, he went to the kitchen for some coffee and toast. Kit was no where to be found. If he had to guess, he figured she was sitting outside, in the warm morning sun, on their backyard patio, reading. It was something she liked to do when she had the time and the weather was right.
With Kit no where around, he ate his breakfast alone. When he finished, he headed down the hall to their home gym, ready to start his workout session. He froze when he got to the door though, finally realizing where Kit was. He stood in the doorway watching her, gracefully bend at the waist, arm stretched down, then standing back straight, arm reaching above her head.
A smile adorned his face, her back was to him and she had yet to notice, or if she had noticed, acknowledge his presence. He was taken back to the time they toured the house. Walking down the hall, Randolph had been the first to enter the home gym.
“I like this a lot. I love the windows looking out into the yard. They already have the rubber flooring on this half. It would be great to have a treadmill and some free weights, maybe a stationary bike. What do you think Kit? Kit?”
He turned back around towards the door where he expected to see her standing but she wasn’t there. He made another quarter turn and found her standing on the other side of the room he had yet to address. He watched her slow and calculated movements. An audible gasp could be heard as she reached her hand out, running it along the barre. The other half of the room had hardwood floors, mirrors, and a ballet barre. He hadn’t expected Kit to be so captivated by it.
“Kit?”
“Hmmm…”
“Are you okay?”
“Oh, yes, sorry I just got caught up in some old memories.”
She had told him she use to do ballet, but he never realized how much it must have meant to her.
“So, what do you think of this space?”
“I adore it.” Her hand had yet to leave the barre and all Randolph could do was smile at the delight on her face.
Now, here they were, him watching her once again move her hand along the barre as she performed one move after the next. It wasn’t until Kit made eye contact with him in the mirror did she notice him watching her.
“You’re up.”
“I am.” Not leaving his perch, leaning against the door frame, arms crossed.
“You’re also staring.”
“There is just a lot to take in right now. The beautiful morning, the blooming flowers outside, that outfit, you.”
“So this does it for you huh?” He could hear the teasing in her words before she bent over again.
“Very much so.”
“Good to know. You planning on working out?” She straightened back up again, eyeing him in the mirror.
“I am.”
“Well, don’t let me stop you darling. The other half of the gym is all yours. Are you lifting today?”
Kit knew about his fitness routine, especially since she enjoyed admiring the fruits of his labor. Even now in his sweats and t-shirt, she could see the muscles in is arms and chest. Two days a week he would lift and one day he would do cardio. Sunday was usually a lifting day for him.
“I was planning on it, but I am thinking about mixing up my routine a little.”
“How so?”
Randolph started walking over to Kit, taking her hips in his hands. Her one hand stayed on the barre while her other found purchase on his chest; filling his muscle flex under her touch.
“I was thinking maybe today would be a cardio day.”
“I see. Cardio of the horizontal kind?” Kit’s eyebrow shot up, questioning him, even though she was already catching on to his little game.
“Horizontal, vertical. You know I have no preference.”
“Yes, you do darling. You prefer when you are horizontal and I’m vertical; though I’m not sure there is a lot of cardio on your end.”
Randolph’s eyebrows shot up this time, in surprise. The tips of his ears started to turn red. While it wasn’t a secret, he just didn’t expect her to call him out on his favorite position. Nodding his head, he countered her.
“The day is still young. Maybe later we sneak in a second workout, maybe both of us horizontal? More cardio on my end? Because if memory serves me right, that’s your preference, along with some light hamstring stretching.”
The blush that was on her chest started creeping up her neck. Her body was tingling and heat spread all the ways to her her toes. Taking his hand she lead him out of the home gym.
“Where are we going?”
“To work on our fitness.”
Randolph took two quick steps to catch up to her, he wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her feet off the ground. She let out a squeal in the process, protesting with him to put her down.
“Randolph put me down. What are you doing?”
“Getting in a little strength training as well.”
“You’re ridiculous.” Trying to wiggle out of his grasp. Her efforts had the opposite effect; as his arms only tightened more around her as he carried her down the hall.
Chapter 23: Date Night
Summary:
Randolph and Kit need a night out. Includes dinner, dancing, and hair playing.
Chapter Text
Randolph was standing in the closet getting dressed for the evening. As he reached the top button of his shirt, he paused, trying to remember the last time he and Kit had an evening out. She had been so busy at the hospital lately dealing with a nursing shortage and budget cuts. The job of a CEO was never ending. Randolph had spent the last couple of days planning a night out for the two of them, hoping she could have a relaxing evening.
As he finished the last button he felt her presence nearing. Entering the closet, dressed in her robe and barefoot, she shuffled through her dresses trying to find the right one. Picking two, she held them up for Randolph’s opinion.
“Which one?”
He studied her as she moved one in front of her then the other.
“You know that I think you look good in anything and everything,” he paused, cocking an eyebrow, “and also nothing.”
“Seriously Randolph, you are no help,” rolling her eyes, she held the two dresses out in front of her trying to figure out which one to wear.
“The navy one.”
“Thank you.”
As she reached to put the red dress back on the rack, Randolph finished his thought, “It’s easier to take off.”
Kit shot him a look, pulling the red one back and hanging the navy one back up.
“Wait, wait, wait, I was just kidding.”
Kit eyed him again, a twinkle appearing in her brown orbs, and switched back to the navy dress, “You’re not wrong darling.”
Happy with his little victory, Randolph placed a kiss on her cheek as she passed him on her way to the bathroom, navy dress in hand. He thumbed through his ties, finding the perfect one to match her dress. When she returned she had changed out of her robe, navy fabric now hugging her body. Walking up to Randolph, she grabbed his tie. The silk running through her fingers as she pulled him in close, her lips finding his.
When they pulled apart, Kit started twisting the silk around itself until she had it perfectly tied. Sliding the knot into place, she released his tie, hands running down his chest. She looked up and met his eyes, when he reached out and let one of her velvety curls slide through his fingers.
He loved her hair. The way it felt when he ran his fingers through it or how it fanned across his chest during the night. It was no secret to Kit that Randolph loved her hair. She did her best to leave the loose curls over shoulders to allow him easy access to touch whenever he wanted. There was something very intimate about him playing with her hair and she lived for these moments.
Reluctantly, Kit pulled away from his touch. Randolph reached for his suit jacket and Kit slid her feet into her heels.
“Ready darling?”
“After you, my lady.”
Their dinner was lovely. Randolph had done a great job at finding a quiet restaurant downtown for them to share their evening. The food was delightful and the wine exquisite, but even better was the time they were getting to spend together after a long week at work. When they finished their meal, they headed out of the restaurant.
“Walk with me for a bit?” Randolph asked, extending his arm to her.
Kit’s hand found purchase in the crease of his elbow as he lead the way to a park nearby. During the summer, the park was very busy in the evening with live entertainment, group outdoor activities, and the fountain area in the center of the park was decorated with several strands of lights.
They walked up to the area where a small band was just starting their next song. It was a slower song than the one they had just finished playing.
“Dance with me,” Randolph extended his hand towards her.
She placed her hand in his as he pulled her close to him, their free arms wrapping around each other. She buried her nose into his neck, taking in his scent that she knew all too well. They swayed to the rhythm of the song not caring who was watching, just enjoying being so close to each other. The song ended and they pulled a little further apart waiting for the band’s next song.
Kit once again found Randolph’s hand seeking her hair. Absentmindedly, he played with the strand, completely content with just being in the other’s presence.
“Thank you for this evening.”
“You are welcome. Yow work too hard sometimes and I have really missed you lately.”
“Me too. I have been trying to limit my time at the hospital, but you know how difficult it is for me to leave things unfinished.”
“I know. You have been doing better. I just miss you now that I am not there everyday with you.”
She gave him a weak smile, knowing how hard it had been for him to walk away from what he truly loved. He had been doing better with his illness. Taking better care of himself, being more aware of when he needed treatment, and his flareups seemed a little less frequent.
The band started playing again and they instantly went back to dancing. Randolph made a mental note to add dancing to their monthly todo list. He knew Kit wouldn’t mind because dancing was one of Kit’s favorite things to do. Every now and then he caught her dancing around the house when she was cleaning or cooking. He would just stand back and watch her easily move to the music. If the song allowed, he would join her and twirl her around the room.
After a few more songs he felt Kit shiver.
“Shall we head back?”
She nodded in response just as Randolph reached to pull his suit jacket off. He draped it over her shoulders and she pulled it closer around herself.
“Thank you darling.”
“Anytime.”
His arm snuck out around her waist, keeping her close, as they walked back to the car. When they made it home, Kit hung his suit jacket up that she was still wearing, then she took ahold of his hand pulling him in for a kiss.
“I believe someone made a promise about how quickly this dress comes off.”
“Did I?”
“Yes, you did. And I fully expect you to fulfill that promise.”
“Say no more.”
“Randolph!”
Kit squeaked as Randolph took off jogging down the hall, pulling her behind him. But she couldn’t really protest, she wanted this just as much as him and had she not been in heels she would have passed him on their way to their bedroom.
Chapter 24: Retirement
Summary:
It's time for Kit to retire.

Chapter Text
“You ready?” His deep voice pulled her out of her trance.
“In a minute darling.”
The time had come, she had dreaded this moment. Not quite sure what she would do when it came, how she would handle it, or if she was really ready. It wasn’t a surprise, this had been planned for several months, but even with the advance notice she wasn’t fully prepared to let go of this part of her. For so much of her life, this was who she was, what she did, and what drove her. How does one say goodbye to 30+ years of their life?
After she had turned in her paperwork she avoided talking about it. Never said the word out loud that constantly rolled around in her head. Randolph and her had discussed it before she signed her notice, but since then he didn’t bring it up, afraid she was regretting this decision. He knew that feeling, knew what it was like to leave behind so much of one’s life. Though their circumstances were different, it didn’t make this decision any easier for her.
When Randolph had showed up to her office, he stood in the doorframe watching her. Kit was standing over by the windows, staring out, lost in thought. He didn’t speak at first, just observing, and waiting for the best moment to break the silence. Then he saw it, her hand made its way up to her cheek, wiping what he could only assume were tears. His heart hurt seeing his strong and confident wife fall apart. This is when he decided it was time to let his presence be known, if she hadn’t already felt him near when he showed up.
He asked if she was ready and she responded, but didn’t turn to face him. Walking over to her, Randolph placed his hand on Kit’s back rubbing soothing circles. Not wanting to rush her, he stood beside her in silence just letting his presence comfort her. He could feel her take in a deep breath and let it out, trying to compose herself. She turned towards him and he could see the tears still lingering in the corners of her eyes. Reaching up, his hands cupped her face, his thumbs removing the last trace of tears from her cheeks.
“I know this is hard. Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Just being here is enough.” The corner of her lips turning up into a small grin. “It’s just going to take me some time to get use to this,” she paused, “Retirement, I can’t believe it is already here.”
Shaking her head, not fully comprehending this new chapter in her life. Having him here was a start in helping her feel better and understanding what her new life would consist of; him. She could see the love and compassion he has for her reflecting in his eyes, trying to let her know he was with her every step of the way. Leaning forward, she gave him a kiss.
“I’m ready now.”
She turned toward the shelf behind her desk, well not her’s anymore, and removed the framed letter from her father. It was the last personal item she had left to pack. Holding it in her hands, she looked at it. Thinking back to the day her dad had given it to her. She was headed off to a new country, for a new job and new life. All these years later, she could not believe that her life had turned out this way. Two children, three husbands, and a successful career as a surgeon and CEO. While she wasn’t completely ready to leave behind being a surgeon, she was ready to leave behind all the meetings and politics of being CEO. And even more than that, she was ready to spend more time with the great love of her life.
Placing the frame in the moving box on the desk with the rest of her personal effects. Randolph picked up the box and they headed out of Chastain for the last time as Kit being the CEO.
Their car was full of boxes from her office as they headed home together. Randolph was driving and would reach out for her hand when two were not needed to drive. As they pulled onto their street, Kit could see that cars were lining both sides of the road. Someone must be having a party or something with the amount of vehicles. When they pulled into their driveway, all of the lights were on at their house, and Kit realized that she recognized many of the Chastain Parking Permits and her daughter’s cars.
“Randolph? What is going on?”
The smile on his face was one of pure joy with a hint of being very pleased with himself. “Surprise!”
“Darling, you did not have to do this.”
“But I wanted to, and so did our family and friends.” Putting the car into park, he turned a faced her. “I am so proud of you and what you have accomplished. You have helped so many people and left Chastain in such a great place. Everyone here wants to celebrate with us because they love you and are just as proud of you as I am.”
Kit sighed in disbelief, tears forming in her eyes for a second time tonight, but this time they were happy tears. Randolph took her hand and rubbed his thumb over the back of it.
“Shall we?” She asked, her voice deeper with the question. “Well, we don’t want to keep our guest waiting.”
A small laugh left his lips remembering when she said something very similar to him when they attended the valentines charity event together. Her eyes now free of tears had a sparkle, saying that she knew exactly what she was doing when she picked her word choice.
“Surprise!” Was shouted by their guest as the door opened.
They entered the house hand and hand, leaving the boxes in the car for tomorrow. Kit was immediately greeted with hugs and congratulations on an outstanding career. Their home was filled with colleagues and family. After the initial greetings, the guest mingled with another; eating, drinking, and enjoying each other’s company. After a bit, Kit’s daughters finally made their way to their mother.
“How does it feel to be retired mom?” Amelia asked her mother as she embraced her in a big hug.
“I don’t think it has really set in yet. Maybe when my alarm doesn’t go off Monday or when I am not awaken in the middle of the night for a hospital emergency it will really seem real. All I know right now is that being retired makes me feel kind of old,” she laughed at herself knowing that wasn’t completely true.
“Don’t worry mom, you are still not as old as gramps over here,” thumbed hitched in the direction of Randolph.
“Ouch!” Randolph placed his hand over his heart, “That hurt.”
“Oh please. Don’t act like you don’t like being called gramps or grandpa.”
“Fair.”
They all laughed at the exchange between Kit’s daughter and husband. Their relationship had grown over the years and they enjoyed teasing each other. Kit hadn’t always appreciated the snarky and sarcastic personality of her daughter, but knew she was the only one to blame for that.
Molly was next to hug her mother, “So any big plans for retirement?”
“I don’t know. I’ll probably spend the first few weeks going through all my stuff from my office, deciding what to keep or get rid of. Maybe I’ll finally get a chance to make a dent of the books on my list that I haven’t had the chance to read. But nothing major planned at this moment.”
Molly eyed Randolph who had a sheepish look about him. Kit noticed the exchange between the two.
“What?”
“You haven’t told her have you?” Molly asked.
“Told me what?” Kit was very curious as to what her daughter was referring to.
Reaching up, Randolph started rubbing the back of his neck. A nervous habit that Kit knew all too well. Crossing her arms over her chest, she watched him, waiting for his response.
“I haven’t told her yet. I was waiting for tonight.”
“Oh, sorry,” Molly was worried she may have ruined something Randolph had planned.
“You know you’re going to have to tell me now.”
“No, it’s fine,” he told Molly before turning to Kit. “Well, I actually have the next month of your retirement planned.”
“Do you?” Eyebrow arching in curiosity.
“One month, you and me, traveling around Europe. Greece, Italy, France, and ending in England.”
“Randolph,” Kit didn’t know what to say. She never expected him to tell her about a month vacation planned.
Since his retirement, they hadn’t spent as much time together because he wasn’t at the hospital everyday with her. But he did go to the hospital every Wednesday to eat lunch with her if her schedule allowed. She was excited about this opportunity to spend more time with him and enjoy just being together. She never would have guessed he already had plans for them.
“I thought it would be good for us to get away for awhile. Enjoy some time together before we figure out what our new normal is. Plus, I’ve never been to your hometown, so I planned for you to give me a tour of where you grew up.”
“That sounds absolutely lovely darling, thank you.”
She gave him a lingering kiss. The girls faking mock disgust, but also secretly loving how happy their mom was with Randolph.
“Get a room!” AJ said from across the room.
“Grandma, seriously?” Came from Josie.
“Grandpa, really?” From Sammie.
They pulled apart, foreheads resting against each other, big grins across their faces, as they laughed at their guests.
“We would get a room, but it seems that you all are content spending your entire evening here,” Randolph said.
“I believe that is our cue to leave,” Conrad added.
“He’s not serious. You all are welcome to stay as long as you want. Just lock the door on your way out.” Kit gave a teasing wink to them all as laugher broke out across the room. “But in all seriousness, I can’t thank you all enough for being here tonight. You all mean so much to me and I love you dearly. It’s hard to believe that my time at Chastain has come to an end. I thank you all for your love and support over the years and look forward to spending time with you outside of the hospital. Please know our door is always open to every one of you; you are more than just friends, you’re family.”
“To Dr. Kit Voss, the best surgeon, CEO, and friend.” Billie raised her glass.
“To Kit,” they all echoed.
Much later, their guest finally started making their way out. Leftovers were put away, but the cleaning was left for tomorrow. Kit took Randolph’s hand after he closed the refrigerator and led him down the hall to their bedroom where she properly thanked him for all he had done for her today.
Laying across his bare chest, her fingers intertwined with his, rested over his heart.
“Thank you for today, darling.”
“You’re welcome. Anything for you, Kit.”
She was completely happy with her life and still madly in love with the man she was tangled in the sheets with. If this was how retirement was going to be, time spent with friend and family, and ending every night wrapped in Randolph’s arms; she could get very use to this. She looked up at him, placing a small kiss on his jaw.
“So,” she said.
“So,” he responded.
“Tell me more about this vacation you have planned for us.”
He pulled her in a little closer. She could feel the cool metal of his wedding ring running over her bare back.
“Well, let me see…”
He told her about all his plans and ideas, wanting her input at times, which she gave. But mostly she just listened to his soothing voice and heart beating under her ear. After he finished telling her his plans, they fell asleep completely content and wrapped in each other’s arms; just the two of them, Randolph Bell and Kit Voss.
Notes:
Well this little fic has finally come to an end. I hope you all enjoyed!
