Valentine's day is a hoax but I love that it's an excuse to shower you with love

Summary:

Valentine’s day arrived and the white collar office had been decorated with hearts of various sizes and paper cupids but what was really concerning was the small bouquet of superboy t-shirts? That was odd to say the least. There was also a box of chocolates which seemed pretty normal but on closer inspection the chocolates were branded and cost fifty dollars. Something was clearly going on there and Peter didn’t like it.

Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Valentine’s day was just around the corner and the White Collar office was filled with gossip on who was going out with who. Peter didn’t particularly care about the gossip; he just wanted to get El a gift, maybe some roses and a new bracelet or maybe a dress and then he’d be done. Neal on the other hand had some strong opinions on the holiday.

“I swear this entire holiday is just capitalism seizing the opportunity to profit off of the human emotion of love” Neal scoffed as he saw Peter looking for restaurants as he passed by Peter’s desk

“You can just say you don’t have a date y’know,” Peter sighed, “And get back to work” Peter stuffed his phone back into his pocket glaring at Neal

“Pfft I have a date-”

“Wait what-”

“Wait, ignore what I just said I do not have a date on Valentine’s. I’m going to be sitting in my apartment feeling sad on Valentine's day.”

Peter didn’t really care what Neal did on Valentine’s day but the need to keep it a secret was odd to him. Nevertheless Peter felt happy that Neal was finally getting over Kate. Peter just wanted the day to end so he could go home and get an early night in so he could wake up early that weekend to bring El dress shopping for their Valentine’s date Monday evening. It was unfortunate that Valentine’s day fell on a Monday though.

Something was clearly going on there and Peter didn’t like it.

A few hours later, the end of the day was nearing and Neal seemed to be checking the time very nervously. Peter really should ask him about the gifts on his desk but he would let Neal tell him about it later; besides he had a date with El, no need to worry about Neal.

Of course Peter couldn’t have been left with a peaceful Valentine’s. Timothy Drake-Wayne walks through the door of the office with his partner Bernard Dowd which was odd since they rarely left Gotham, maybe a Valentine’s day trip out? If so, what were they doing in the white collar office? Peter had heard about them through El and Diana they were very prominent people in the public eye, being one of the few queer couples that were that well known across the world having been together a log time as well. Which according to El didn’t happen often with high society members.

“Can I help you?” Peter said as he approached the couple.

“Yeah! We’re looking for Neal Caffrey?” Upon closer inspection, Drake-Wayne seemed like he hadn’t slept in days and that was concerning. Also Neal? Why were they looking for Neal of all people? Peter really couldn’t do much but to comply. It wasn’t like they would be doing anything illegal with him right? Unless-

“Oh nevermind we see him,” the blonde cut off Peter’s thoughts while waving in Neal’s direction. Neal at least had the decency to look slightly embarrassed about them being in the office.

The moment Kon had seen the gifts on his desk he could guess what it meant. His mission was over; he could go home. He still had to say goodbye to Peter and the rest of the team and El. Well it seemed that he really didn’t have a choice seeing as Tim had come into the office, and Bernard was with him too.

This was probably to get back at all the Valentine’s that Kon had missed because of the mission. Well it wasn’t like he had a choice, criminals had a thing for pulling off large plans on the day. Probably because of the fact most would be distracted by their partners or wallowing in self pity.

“Happy Valentine’s babe,” Tim smirked at him, “B says the mission is over I brought the paperwork”

“Didja really have to come to the office though?” Kon said, slipping into a bit of a southern accent, something that Neal shouldn’t have, “and you brought Bernard too?”

“Yes I did. This is what you get for not visiting more often,” Tim glanced at Bernard who was busy chatting up Diana, “Bernard’s here to watch the chaos unfold. Besides he never gets to join when we go out on “important” missions so he’s pretty upset. This is a good way to make up to him”

“Well yeah, the last time he was on an op he forgot to retrieve info and ended up inviting the guy to our dnd campaign which ended in a bar fight because the guy had called dnd a shitty game”

“Yeah that’s true but it’s okay at least he didn’t get hurt. Anyways stop distracting me. I’m gonna leave this with your handler and he can deal with it. We are going on a date,” Tim tugged Bernard away from Diana.

“Ah Agent Burke. Neal Caffrey doesn’t exist I’m going to take my boyfriends out on a date now”

Peter looked at Kon confused, “Neal? Boyfriends what’s going-”

“Oh! Would you look at the time? Tim, we're gonna miss our reservation. Grab Kon we gotta go!”

“Sorry Peter! Meet me at June’s later I’ll explain everyth-” and Neal, Tim and Bernard were out of the window. Wait. The window? Did they just jump out the window?

“Y’know Bernard Dowd, the guy I was talking to seemed a lot like Mozzie? Get this, he tried to tell me Lex Luthor was in charge of the entire Kryptonite trade, as if” Diana snorted from behind Peter as he tried to spot the trio in the crowd below.

Later that evening, Peter went around to June’s. Prior to that Peter had tried to pull up Neal’s tracking data, only to find that there were no digital traces of Neal Caffrey. So there he was waiting in Neal’s apartment because according to June, Neal had gone out on a date and would be back late. She let him sit inside while he waited.

The door to Neal’s apartment suddenly burst open, followed by some Mozzie-esque ramblings.

“I’m telling you some of Belle Reve’s villains have been getting released way too early. There’s definitely something going on,”

“Yeah and Amanda Waller’s the one behind it all” Neal rolls his eyes at the blonde, presumably the one Diana had said seemed a lot like Mozzie. Yeah Peter could see it.

“Fine. Don’t believe me then”

“Sorry Kon, I might be inclined to believe Bernard here. The funds from other projects seemed to be skimmed off and funneled to this off-shore account. Plus, it is true that the villains seem to be getting their sentences cut shorter. I should tell B about this” Tim says as he looks through his phone.

“Ha! See I was right,” Bernard looked smugly at Neal.

“Ahem, uh hi?”

“Oh right, Peter,” Neal turned around to address the other 2, “could you gimme a sec?”

“Yeah sure Tim and I can go sit inside the kitchen or something”

“Okay” Neal turned back at Peter, “So, my name isn’t really Neal”

“I figured that I just wanna know what’s going on”

“My real name is Conner. I’ve been in a deep cover op in the FBI for the Justice League. There were suspected members of the League of Assassins that had infiltrated the FBI, they sent me in to investigate and weed out the LOA members”

“Oh, that’s some deep stuff you got yourself into. So now you’ve told me; does this mean you’re leaving the white collar unit?”

“Probably, I mean my job here’s done and I’d be kinda useless just sitting in an office”

“What about Kate? What about Mozzie? Does Mozzie know you’re a ‘cape’ as he put it?”

“Does Mozzie know” Neal- or Conner, Peter guessed he should call him, scoffed, “Mozzie and Kate were all part of the op. Mozzie was played by Bernard, he had a glamour on but those don’t last very long. Kate was just Tim in a wig and a little bit of make-up”
