Chapter 1: Chapter 1
Chapter Text
You made your way down the halls of the gold plated palace towards the library. You had taken the long way, hoping to not run into a certain raven haired prince. Once you made it into the library you quietly looked around, still trying to avoid the trickster. You knew he enjoyed the library, and unfortunately you also enjoyed sitting in one of the ancient tufted chairs in a quiet corner. You tiptoed over to your favorite corner of the library. You were on the hunt for your most favorite book. You must have read it hundreds of times. It was one of those sappy love stories, but no matter how many times you read it, the ending always made you swoon. But of course, it was always placed on the highest shelf. Pulling over the nearest foot stool you prepared to reach for the book. You're not the shortest person, but it was still hard to reach, even standing on the wobbly stool. As you stretched your arm as far as it would reach, suddenly the stool started to tip. Then you were falling. With a yelp you close your eyes, preparing to hit the tiled marble floor. But instead of the floor you were greeted with a pair of strong arms. Peeking through your hands you see a pair of mischievous emerald green eyes. You jump out of his arms. He wordlessly reached up for the book you wanted. Was he going to get it for you? No way the prince Loki was going to do something nice for you.
“Was this the book you were looking for?” he said, a devious grin sliding over his features. You gave him a rushed nod, not wanting to draw out the conversation. He opened the book with a noncommittal hum.
“You really like to read these sappy love stories?” you could feel the blush creeping onto your face.
“And?” you say, avoiding his gaze and smoothing your skirts.
“Well, I never pinned you as someone who likes to read such…” the Prince trailed off in a suggestive tone.
“What is that supposed to even mean?” You spat back, making a grab for your book. He quickly lifted the book above his head, knowing you wouldn’t be able to reach it. What an ass. Silently you cursed your height (or maybe his, for he must be over six foot, with the way he towered over you).
“Can you just give me my book,” you asked, unamused.
“That's no way to ask your prince.” He grinned smugly.
You turned on your heel, knowing your face must be completely red now, and started to walk away. You knew there was no use in fighting with him, you had more books in your room anyway.
------------------------------
It wasn't his fault, he just couldn't resist. He knows what sort of… literature you could find in that section of the library. He’s always been a tease, it's just the way he is. He silently creeped up behind you as you reached for a book. But as he stood there the stool started to tip. Instinctively he lifted his arms to catch you. He looked down at you, draped over him. He would be lying if he said he didn't like seeing you like this. As you scrambled out of his arms he felt a small pang in his heart. As the two of you bickered he was surprised.
It was unusual for a person to object to his teasing, but stranger still was the disappointment he felt as he watched you briskly walk away.
------------------------------
You can’t believe him! Why does he have to do these things? Ever since you got here the Prince seems to have done nothing but make fun of you.You sit on your bed with a huff, dismayed. You had planned on reading your book all day. But after what Loki pulled… you don't think you'll be going back to the library for a few days. You sat, dreadfully bored, what else is there to do? You had nothing to do until tonight. There was some royal function later. Being a noble girl, your father the advisor of the king’s treasury, you had to attend events and dinners with the royal family. You realized that attending the dinner means you would very likely have to see Prince Loki, and the thought made you flop back onto your bed with a groan. I have to find some way to get out of this, you despaired.
---
However, a few hours later, you were awoken from your impromptu nap by several impatient knocks at your door.
You sat up and groggily called out, “Come in.”
The door opened, and in came your spirited lady’s maid, Alena.
Alena was a pretty girl, always a swish of skirts and strawberry-blonde ringlets. She was a dreadful flirt, never lacking in a smart comment and a wink for any boy that bashfully brought her a flower or held the door open for her. But she was your closest confidant and friend, and never held back the way other servants did around you. Best of all, with her she brought the juiciest castle gossip.
“Hello, hello! You’ll never guess what I heard today,” Alena said with a grin.
You made a poor attempt to seem interested and awake with an encouraging, “Hmm?”
Alena spoke with a conspiratorial tone.
“A little bird told me that Prince Loki was seen with a girl in his arms in the library.”
You snapped your head to look at her.
“Where did you hear that?”
“The walls have ears,” she shrugged.
“But,” she continued, “you wouldn’t have anything to tell me about that, would you?”
“Loki… may have cornered me in the library,” you conceded. You began to tell Alena about how he taunted you, your voice climbing in anger at remembering the incident. Alena was uncharacteristically silent, a knowing smile draped over her face. When you were done with your rant she shook out the cloth folded in her arms, and held up a lovely dress.
“Well, this,” she said, “will surely catch your Prince’s eyes.”
You gasped, “What!? I don’t want that! He is nothing but a teasing arrogant boy!” you say flusteredly.
Alena hummed, and you could tell she didn't find your displeasure believable. She helped you slip the velvet dress over your shoulders and lace it up. It was truly an eye-catching dress. It was made of dark green fabric with golden embroidery twisting around the low neckline. The skirt hugged the gentle curve of your waist and flowed down to the floor. The same gold embroidery ran along the bottom hem of the dress and the cuffs of the sleeves. It was truly flattering.
“There!” Alena said triumphantly. “You look lovely. Pretty as a princess consort,” she added slyly.
“Stop that! There is nothing between me and the Prince. Not in that way…” you trailed off.
“Beside,” you continued, “Loki is not in line for the throne. You know that.”
Alena rolled her eyes. She sat you down in front of your vanity to fix up your hair.
“All I’m saying is that many girls would trip over themselves for the Prince to talk to them like that,” Alena reasoned.
Now it was your turn to roll your eyes.
“Tripping over themselves? I doubt it” you sigh.
“Now why would you say that?” Alena asked, tilting her head.
You looked away, brow furrowed. But you ignore the eyes Alena gave you as she finished your hair.

Chapter Text
Loki walked out of the library just a few minutes after you left. He had originally gone into the library to sit and read. But, of course, after he saw you in there, the trickster side of his brain turned on. After that… run in, he decided to just go back to his room. Hours later Loki was getting ready for the royal dinner thing… whatever, thing. He could care less about the dinner. Really, he just wanted to see you again. Maybe tease you some more. He wore a pair of semi loose black pants, along with some black heeled boots. He had a black and gold long sleeve shirt on with a leather waistcoat of sorts. The waistcoat was black with green and gold accents. Tonight, because it was a formal dinner, he donned his green cape, which stretched all the way to the floor, and was secured with two gold shoulder plates. Loki stopped and looked in the mirror, he was often unhappy with what he saw. But tonight, he enjoyed the way the green in his outfit made his eyes pop, and how his whole outfit made him really look royal. He waltzed into the grand hall and strided over to his mother, giving her a loving hug. He avoided his father, who was right next to her. Then he saw his boisterous brother, already surrounded by a flock of pretty girls. Loki made his way past a group of advisors and was able to grab a glass of some sparkling drink. Drink in hand, he then made his way over to his brother..
“Brother!” Thor boomed, ruffly draping his arm over Loki's shoulder.
“I see you made it to the dinner,” Thor continued
“Yes, hello to you too Thor,” Loki said with an unamused tone.
Loki’s eyes scanned the room, looking for a certain noble. His eyes finally found you as you walked through the grand gold doors of the hall. The beautiful dress you were wearing hugged in all the right places, and flowed out to create a gorgeous silhouette. It was green and gold, and something about you wearing his signature colors made him feel strangely pulled towards you. But really, the dress was only the setting for a glimmering jewel. You looked stunning in every sense of the word. Once Loki snapped out of his trance, he noted he wasn't the only one whose eyes were drawn to you. His brother Thor was also looking you up and down. Loki could feel something bubble up in his chest. He didn't know why he started to feel this new feeling. He didn't care that Thor’s eyes were tracing along your figure. Right? No, he barely even knew you! You were just some advisor's daughter, who happened to have the most dazzling eyes in Asgard. Wait, what was he thinking? He just likes to play with you, nothing more.
----------------------------
You headed down to the grand hall where the dinner was being held. After today's interaction in the library you were a bit nervous. You were fearful that the raven haired prince would embarrass you in front of even more people. The large, arching golden doors to the grand hall were wide open. There were only a few dozen people milling about, but the room was filled with chatter. Of course, the first person you spotted was not your father, but Prince Loki. What was his problem? Why was he just staring at you? Your eyes finally found your father, and you made your way over to him. He was in a conversation with another one of Odin's many advisors. Still out of the corner of your eye, you could see Loki staring you down. Did he really find you that aggravating? As you sat down next to your father at the long gold dining table you realized that a few seats down, on the other side of the table, sat Loki. He was STARING at you. Maybe more like glaring. Next to him sat Thor, who was also giving you some intent glances. What did Loki have against you? Did he hate you? Was it because you didn't play his little games of teasing? You let out a sigh, trying to rid yourself of thoughts about Loki. You just needed to get through this dinner, and then you could go back to your room and read whatever books you had lying on your desk. After everyone had eaten, you could still feel Loki's eyes on you. The advisors and Odin got up and continued to talk, all drinking a goblet of something or other. This left you sitting alone at the almost empty table. Then, the one and only prince Thor walked over to you.
“Well hello there fair lady,” Thor said, giving you a small bow.
“Oh! Hello my prince,” you stutter out, clambering out of your chair and giving him a good ninety degree bow.
“What is a lovely lady like yourself doing here sitting alone?” he said boldly.
“Oh, well I-” you started, but you were cut off by a glass of red wine spilling all over you. As the deep red liquid drips down the front of your dress you look up. There Loki stood, glass in hand. Had he really just poured a glass of wine on you? He looked back down at you, meeting your eyes. You searched his eyes for anything, remorse, an apology, but there was nothing. He just looked at you. You scoffed, turning on your heel. He started to say something but you were already storming off. You couldn't believe him. Your face must be completely red with embarrassment and rage. Oh boy, you were angry. Your heels clacked sharply as you made it to your room. You slammed the door shut. You started to undo your dress, just wanting to get into your chemise and sleep. Looking in the mirror as you untied your dress, something caught your eye in the mirror’s reflection. Letting the strings of your bodice dangle, you walked over to your bed. You picked up the package that was sitting there. Yanking the brown paper off of it, you held up a book. It was a copy of your favorite, the one you tried to get from the library today. However, this one was a different version, an ornate hardcover edition. You reverently ran your fingers over the engraved cover and held it up. A folded scrap of paper fell from between the pages, fluttering down to rest on your bed. You picked it up and opened it. Inside it read ‘to a very lovely girl ~ secret admirer’. You couldn't believe it. You had a secret admirer! Maybe your time at the palace won't be so bad.

Chapter Text
Loki sat leaning back in his chair. He would have been utterly bored, as he usually was at such events, if not for you. You captivated him. Everytime he tried to pry his eyes away from you, he was pulled back like a magnet with one glance.
“She is a pretty one, yes?” Thor spoke, seated next to Loki.
Thor continued, “If you do not make any attempts, I shall be tempted to advance.” The younger prince snapped his head towards his brother, broken from his trance.
“What are you talking about?” Loki said breathlessly.
“Oh, don’t play that game with me, brother,” Thor glanced toward you, across the table. “You’ve been undressing her with your eyes half the night.”
Loki glared at his brother.
“There is nothing untoward between us.”
“Ah, yes, because my dear brother is known for his propriety,” Thor chuckled sarcastically. The younger prince gave Thor another steely gaze.
Thor stood, and spoke, “very well.” Loki realized his mistake later, as Thor followed through on his promise to make an advance on you. As he watched Thor approach you, something inside him filled his veins with molten fire. Thor could have anyone in Asgard, pretty girls constantly circled around him, vying for his attention. And yet, he chose the one person that Loki had
his
eyes on. As he saw your cheeks flush at some bold comment Thor made, Loki sauntered towards you two. And perhaps it was that he had indulged in maybe a little too much of the dark beverage in the glass he held,
or perhaps it was the anger he felt at his brother undermining him yet again that distorted his balance, but as he rushed up to you and Thor, the momentum of his drink did not stop with his body. Suddenly, Loki was blinking as you stared up at him, surprise and anger washing across your face. Loki looked at his now-empty goblet, and then at your dress, now stained a deep red. And then, you were gone, already rushing out the arched doorway of the hall.
Gods, he was such an idiot.
------------------------------
You quickly donned your chemise and theorized about who your secret admirer could be. The previous events of the night were completely forgotten. You flopped down on your bed and read the note yet again. ‘
Lovely girl’…
lovely... lovely…
‘lovely lady’
. Your mind traced back to earlier in the evening, back to your brief interaction with Prince Thor. He
had
called you ‘lovely lady’. The more you thought about it, the more it made sense. Thor must have heard about Loki teasing you in the library, and perhaps this was his way of apologizing for his brother's actions. So Thor was your secret admirer? Why you? You’ve never thought about the crown prince in that way, unlike so many others. But, if Thor really wanted to pursue you, there was nothing stopping either of you. You are a noble girl, whose father’s position means that he owns land and a small fortune, and it's not as if Asgard is weak and in need of a marriage alliance.
Marriage?
Was that where this could lead? Your mind raced with possibilities you’ve never considered before as you drifted off to sleep.
---
You awoke feeling trepidatious but refreshed, excited even. You were excited by what this day could hold, after everything that happened last night. You could possibly run into Prince Thor today. The thought almost made you blush. Then you remembered that means you could also run into… Prince Loki. you had yet to forgive him for last night, rightfully so. But, nonetheless, you had to get on with your day. Alena had come knocking on your door at just the right time. She picked out a flowy pale pink dress for you to wear today. You looked at yourself in the mirror. The dress flowed around your ankles. It was really a lovely shade of pale pink. It had a square neckline and was fitted around the waist. The dress also had cute puffed sleeves, it was also fashioned with some pink ribbon accents. As she finished helping you with your dress she saw the book on your desk.
“Oh, you got a new book?” Alena asked, moving to pick up the book.
“Well, I mean, I didn't get it,” you stuttered out, “More like I received it.” Alena’s head whipped back to look at you, you could see the teasing look in her eyes.
“I see, so it's from Prince Loki.” she said matter-of-factly.
“No, it didn't say who it was from.” Alena began to say something but you cut her off. “But! I suspect it's from Prince Thor, actually.” Alena went slack-jawed.
“You have, not one, but two princes going after you!”
You blush at that comment.
“Not even, prince Loki hates me,” you say with a roll of your eyes.
“I don't believe that for a second,” Alena said.
“He spilled wine on me last night and didn't even apologize,” you rumble back at her. You two continued to argue about the matter for another few minutes, before Alena was called for other duties. You pick your book up, looking at it longingly. Could prince Thor really be interested in you? You needed to clear your head. You couldn't sit in your room all day. You thought the gardens would be a good place for reading your new book. You make your way down the halls of the palace, maybe hoping to run into someone. You turn and go down the stairs and out the door. It really was a lovely day. You decide to sit in the part of the garden with the best view and the best flowers. You knew of a bench that was perfect for reading amongst the dewy garden. There was a small arched tunnel you had to go through to get there. You were almost out the other side when someone ran into you. You let out a squeak and dropped your book. You look up to see a slightly stunned Prince Loki. Well this feels familiar. A scowl settles on your face. He quickly reaches down for your book. Without saying a word, the prince holds it out to you, a gentle smile on his face. You snatch it from him. How could he just stand there and not say anything? Especially after last night. You turn and start to walk away. You didn't want to deal with Loki's tricks today.
“Wait,” Loki calls out, you stop in your tracks. “Could I, perhaps, accompany you on a walk?” he asked, almost timidly. You stand there, shocked. Did he really just ask you on a walk? You can believe him, what is wrong with him. He hasn't even apologized for last night. But he is a Prince, who so are you to tell him no.
“Sure,” you reply unenthusiastically. You grabbed onto his elbow. He smiled down at you. What an ass.
You started to walk down the path. The two of you walked past many pretty flowers. But the beauty of the garden was lost on you as all you could think about was the awkward silence. After walking for a few more moments Loki stops. You turn to face him. What was he gonna do this time?
“I’m, err, sorry about last night,” Loki spoke in a rush. He continued, “I may have… over indulged in the wine. I’m hedonistic at best sometimes.” You looked at him, stunned. You couldn't say anything. You wanted him to apologize, but you didn't think he would actually do it. The two of you stand there, just looking at one another. There was a sort of shimmer in his eyes. You stare into them, they were a really pretty shade of green. They looked like emeralds. Loki started to lean closer to you. Oh no, this was not going to happen. Not on your watch. Loki was a major playboy, and you weren't about to be added to his list of girls. You swiftly move your head out of this way and step to the side.
“Um, okay,” you stutter out. You just continue to walk on. Well… this was awkward. You could feel him staring at you. After a few more minutes of walking Loki excuses himself. Saying something about needing to help his mother with something. After watching him walk away all you could think about was those damned eyes. What could you see in his eyes earlier? longing? No, mischief , you were sure.

Chapter Text
Loki was walking down the big gold halls of the palace. Maybe he had been hoping to run into a certain noble girl. He really did feel bad about last night. Your dress had been so pretty, he bet you really liked it. He did too. The way it looked on you was divine. He shook his head, he couldn't keep thinking like this. What he needed to do was find you and properly apologize. Suddenly, he realized he wasn't too far from your room. Without really knowing why, he turned and started walking towards where he knew your room to be. Loki walked a little more down the hall towards your door. But instead of seeing you, he saw your lady in waiting, Alena. She walked down the hall in the opposite direction. Quikly he walked over to her.
“Hello there,” he opened, trying to seem nonchalant.
“Oh, hello, Prince Loki,” she said with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“I was wondering if you knew what your lady is up to today,” he said with a charming smile. He really needed to know where you could be.
“ She mentioned she might go to the gardens soon.” A sly look washed over Alena’s face.
“Thank you very much, Miss…” Loki tapered off.
“Alena. And if you ever need any other info on my lady, just ask me,” she said with a certain look on her face. A suggestive look.
“Of course. Thank you, Miss Alena,” he said as she walked off. Loki made his way in the direction of the gardens. Maybe he could get there before you. He walked out into the gardens. He knew where you might go. There was a particularly comfortable bench in one area of the garden, under a shaded tree, with lovely blooms surrounding it. A pretty girl would sit by the pretty flowers, he reasoned to himself. He waited for a few minutes on the best bench for sitting, but you didn't show up. Loki, being impatient, got up, albeit a bit frustrated. The prince started walking back to the tunneled entrance of the gardens. Suddenly he ran into something, or rather, someone. Loki heard a small squeal. He looked down to see you, and saw a book lying on the ground between you. The book he left for you. A gentle smile settled on his face, knowing you kept and seemed to like his gift. He picked up the book and handed it to you, but he saw the glare you gave him. To be fair, he kind of deserved it. You started to walk off, and he panicked. What is he to do now?
“Wait,” he calls out to you. You stop and turn around slowly. Loki cleared his throat awkwardly.
“Could I, perhaps, accompany you on a walk?”
His brain was racing. Maybe this was stupid. Why would you want to walk with him? He watched as you looked at him, almost bewildered.
“Sure,” came your reserved reply.
Loki was overjoyed, but he couldn't show it. He tried his best to keep the smile on his face calm. He walked with you in silence for a bit. He just needed to work up the nerve to say sorry. Why was it always so hard for him to say sorry!? Loki stopped under a beautiful canopy of intertwined myrtle and jasmine. The rich, sweet scent of jasmine filled the air, but he couldn’t tell if it was the thick aroma or your gentle gaze that clouded his head. He could do this.
“I’m, err, sorry about last night,” he spoke in a rush. He continued, “I may have… over-indulged in the wine. I’m hedonistic at best sometimes.” That was the best apology he could get out. He was really trying. You just stared at him. Your bright eyes were so pretty in this soft morning light, in the hazy garden. He looks down at your lips and back up to your eyes. He leaned in a bit, testing the waters, but you didn't move her head. He moved a bit closer, still looking into your eyes. Suddenly your head turned away.
“Um, okay,” you said with almost uncertainty.
The walk continued awkwardly. Loki kept looking at her from the corner of his eyes. He saw that coming from a mile away. He was a fool for thinking someone could like him
“Well, uh, thanks for the walk,” he said, but you just stared back at him. “I , ah, have to go help my mother with something now, you know, royal magicky stuff,” he said.
Loki walked back from where he had entered, and you didn't say a thing as he left. Of course, Loki thought. No one would ever like him. All he does is cause problems and create mischief. He could hear his father saying all those things to him.
------------------------------
You tried to quickly make your way back to your room. Trying to avoid everyone and anyone who could be in your path. Did he really try to kiss you? THE Prince Loki, trying to make a move on you. This has become a problem. One minute he hates you and is pouring wine on you, and the next he is looking at you with gentle eyes, trying to kiss you. You continued to rush down the halls of the palace until, suddenly, you crashed into something hard. Or someone.
“OH! Hello there lovely lady,” Thor boomed.
“Prince Thor,” you breathed, “I'm so sorry for bumping into you!”
“No worries, here, let me help you,” he reached down, giving you a hand.
“Thank you so much, Prince Thor,” you quickly added.
The prince smiled kindly, “Please, you can just call me Thor.”
“Well, Thor, what are you up to?” you asked.
“I'm actually looking for my brother, I was wondering if he was with you?” Thor said with an intrigued tone.
Why would Thor think he was with me? Unless…
“Oh, um...” you said, “He said he was going to help your mother.”
“Ah, so he did go and find you.” he chuckled. You blinked.
“What… what do you mean?” you questioned, taken aback.
“Oh, shurely you have noticed my brother's interest in you. He is not very subtle.” Thor continued to chuckle.
So, that's two people now. Two people think Loki likes you, and one is his own brother. There is no way Loki likes you at all. He can barely stand you. Right? That wasn't making any sense. You continue to question Thor about what he means.
“Why do you keep going on about this?” Thor said, exasperated. You were still befuddled.
“Because why would he like
me
? I thought he hated me.”
“Why would he hate such a lovely lady?” Thor said teasingly
“Oh, stop,” you said, waving your hand at him, trying to hide your blush.
Thor’s kind tone returned. “I mean it, you seem like a lovely lady.”
“Thank you Thor,” you smiled.
“Of course, and that's also why I'm gonna help you and my brother get together.”
You stood frozen.
He is really straightforward.
------------------------------
Thor had already been looking for you so he was surprised when you crashed into him. He had the feeling his brother had a crush on you and he knew he needed to to get you both together. His brother needed someone like you in his life. His brother always struggled with loving himself; it would be good for him to have someone to show he is lovable.
------------------------------
He sat with his mother on her private balcony, stirring his tea idly. He looked longingly over the kingdom. All he wanted was to see her again
“So who is this person you are thinking about?” Frigga interrupted his thoughts with a calm question. Loki whipped his head and looked at her with wide eyes.
“What are you talking about, Mother?” He feigned innocence.
“You wear your feelings on your sleeve, dear. I can tell you are thinking of someone,” she said, without even looking at him.
“I- well this girl…” he stuttered, the words getting caught in his throat.
“Ah, a girl this time. What is her name?” she inquired
“I would never work, she likes Thor,” Loki said, dismayed.
“You asked?” she looked over at him with her eyebrows raised..
“Well, no, but she was talking to him at the dinner-”
“And just because she talked to him means she likes him?’ She cut him off. Loki just stared at his mother. He hadn't thought about it like that.
“Why don't you go and find this girl. Try and get to know her.”
Loki continued to stare at his mother. She was right, he should just try and talk to you. He got up without a word, determination on his face.
---
He walked in the direction of her room. A giddy feeling bubbling up in his chest. He rounded the corner, only to see you and Thor talking.
“-such a lovely lady?”
“Oh stop,” you said, waving your hand at him, he could see a blush on your face.
“I mean it, you seem like a lovely lady,” Thor said with a grin.
“Thank you, Thor,” came your bashful reply.
Loki had heard enough. Of course the one girl, ONE GIRL. The one
he
liked. Thor just had to get everything Loki wanted. Loki stomped back to his room. Why would Thor flirt with her? Loki thought he knew he liked her. Loki slammed his door and slid down it. Sitting on the floor he curled into a ball, head in his knees. Who would want this anyway? He is nothing but a monster. His mother was wrong…

Chapter Text
You awoke this morning feeling delighted, as today was the day you would see if what Thor said had been true. Surely he was wrong, but there was no harm in testing the theory. Perhaps there was a chance that Loki
did
really like you. And there may be the smallest possibility that you had started secretly growing fond of him too. Alena came into your room a bit earlier than usual, but with her signature sly smile particularly crafty,
“Did you know the prince was looking for you yesterday?” she said.
“Which one?” you qwiped back at her. A laugh fell from her lips.
“Prince Loki, he seemed like he really needed to find you…”
“Well I can assure you he found me,” you say with a grin.
“Oh really?” she says, her knowing eyes looking into yours.
“Yes, now if you'll excuse me,” you said, picking up your book, “I need to go to the library.”
“Mm, okay, tell the Prince I said hi,” she chuckled.
You both headed out the door, and you smiled and waved as you walked towards the library. It's been a few days since you last went. Slipping through one of the big doors to the library, it seemed no one was in the cavernous space. You walked into the section you usually like to sit in, with its big comfy chair. But today, someone was in your seat. The one and only raven haired Prince to be exact. Loki really was pretty when his guard was down. He was just relaxing, reading a book, a pleasant smile playing across his features.
“Prince Loki, what a coincidence seeing you here,” you chime with a smile.
“Mm, sure,” he replied coolly, without even looking up.
“What book are you reading?” you ask, trying to lessen the tension. He points to the cover silently, still not looking at you. You pout, why was he suddenly being so cold?
“How was your mother?” you start, feebly making an attempt at starting a conversion again.
“You said you had to help her with something yesterday.”
“Why do you care?” Loki said, finally looking up at you.
“I was just trying to be friendly,” you mumbled.
“So now you want to be friends, that's sweet,” he said sarcastically, closing his book with a snap.
“What's that supposed to mean?” you huffed, frustrated.
“Well, you seem really close with Thor,” he started, “I'm sure you would rather be friends with him, or more.”
“What are you trying to say, Loki?” you say with a pout. He got up out of the chair slowly coming towards you.
“Don't be coy, I hear the way he was talking to you,” Loki said as he neared you.
“Why do you even care, Loki?” you questioned with distress.
“You know what…” he mumbled.
“What?” you say, done with his antics.
“I don't care, I don't care about you or my brother!” he yelled. Your face twists with hurt.
“I could care less what someone as meaningless as you does with my brother!” he continued.
“You don't mean that Loki…” you can feel the tears welling up in your eyes.
“Oh but I do darling, I mean every word of it,” Loki said, looking into your eyes.
“You're lying, this isn't funny,” you say through your teeth and willing your tears not to fall.
“It's not funny, because I do mean it. I would never care about someone like you,” Loki spat. You had had enough. The tears start running down your face. You see something flash across his face. A small sob leaves your lips as you try to talk.
“Goodbye, Loki,” you say before turning to leave. As you leave you try and listen to him calling out to you. Hoping he would apologize. But as you walk you hear nothing. You look back once you reach the doors, only to see Loki's back turned to you. You run back to your room crying. Once you make it back you jump into bed. Pulling the covers over your head and sobbing. Maybe you were being a little sensitive but the words really did sting. You had gotten your hopes up too soon. Why would he like someone like you…
------------------------------
Loki had been in the library since early in the morning, trying to distract himself. He had made himself a cup of tea and picked out a book. But the prince just couldn't get her out of his mind. Or the fact that she seems to like his brother more than him. He knew he should just accept it, as he always has with Thor, but with you it was different. He was so frustrated. What was wrong with him? What did he need to do to get you to like him? He heard the doors to the library open. He hoped it was you, but he tried not to show it. As the footsteps got closer to him he continued to try and look nonchalant.
“Prince Loki, what a coincidence seeing you here,” you said with a smile. Loki suddenly remembered the betrayal he felt. Perhaps it was childish, but he couldn't help the emotions that swarmed him as you approached.
“Mm, sure,” Loki replied, not taking his eyes off his book.
Yet, you continued to try and make conversation with him. He was so confused, did you enjoy him or not? You were standing there trying to have a conversation with him, but yesterday didn't even want to be in his presence. Instead you ran off to be with Thor.
“I was just trying to be friendly,” you mumbled.
“So now you want to be friends, that's sweet,” Loki says sarcastically, slamming his book closed. What was with these women! Now you want to be friends? Couldn't you see he felt something about her? Or were you toying with his heart? “What's that supposed to mean?” She asked with an exasperated look on her face.
“Well, you seem really close with Thor,” Loki stated, “I'm sure you would rather be friends with him, or more.”
Loki wanted to know truly how close you and Thor had grown, if he only could extract a single truth from you.
“What are you trying to say Loki,” you responded.
She definitely does not like me
.
You can barely stand having a conversation with him. How could this girl feign such amiability when Loki couldn’t bear to breath around you? And yet, without you it was like there was no air at all. Loki felt his pride and anger bubbling up. He was completely defenseless in your presence, and so he resorted to the only thing he could think of.
“I don't care! I don't care about you or my brother,” Loki yelled, unable to keep back the emotions that plagued him any longer. He couldn’t bring himself to truly look at the hurt that flashed across your face.
“You don't mean that Loki,” you said, voice becoming watery.
“Oh but I do, darling, I mean every word of it,” Loki said, turning to look at you.
“You're lying, this isn't funny,” you said, as a tear slid down your face.
“It's not funny, because I mean it. I could never care about someone like you,” he lied through his teeth.
He knew all of this was stupid, but he couldn’t control his rage. Yet another flaw you must see in him. Once Loki realized that you started to cry, he could feel his heart breaking into pieces. His stomach churned with regret. As you stormed out of the room, all Loki could feel was the immense guilt of what he just did. He turned away, unable to watch you leave. Once he heard the door close, he turned back around, staring at the door longingly. Why did he always have to mess these things up? He sat back now in his chair, defeated, bringing his hands to his temples. What was he to do now? There is no way you will ever forgive him. All he does is hurt people. Loki couldn't believe that he made you cry. Perhaps it was for the best, Thor has an even temperament, and was gallant and kind. Loki could barely keep hold of his own selfish emotions, and where they spilled over like lava, fire burned in their path.
Loki began to feel his own tears welling up.

Chapter Text
Loki sat for hours in the library trying to forget what he did earlier that day. Trying to make himself forget the tears he made spill from your eyes. He had never had real emotions for someone. If he did feel anything it was never love, only lust. But with you, it was completely different. He just could never get you out of his head. He never really meant for this to happen. He just thought you were some pretty maiden who happened to live in the castle. Maybe he could see you a few times and then ignore you. But oh no, you just had to be the most amazing person he had ever met. You just had to have the most exquisite eyes in asgard. You just had to have the most vibrant personality in the whole multiverse. And of course, Loki just had to fall for you of all people. Now, he sits alone in the library, sulking over how he made you cry. That night when Loki went to bed his dreams were filled only with you and what could have been. At every hour, his thoughts were consumed by images of you.
Several sleepless nights later, Loki had grown frustrated. He couldn't find you anywhere in the castle. He just had to find a way to make it up to you
. He just couldn't keep on without seeing you again. He knew he couldn't do this task on his own. He would have to ask for help, which is the last thing he wants to do. But it can't be that bad right?
Its that bad
---
Loki walked up to the french doors of his mothers balcony. She already knew he was coming. He was just too scared to walk through the doors and ask. Why did it have to be so hard to do such a simple thing? Pushing the doors open, Loki squinted when the light hit his eyes. He had been secluded in his room for a few days and didnt have any light. His mother, Frigga, sat at a small table, drinking her morning tea. She gazed over the palas garden.
“Hello, dear,” his mother greeted, without turning around.
“Hello, mother,” he said, giving her a kiss on the cheek.
“Why don't you have a seat,” she said, motioning to the chair on the other side of the small table.
“Now, what is it you need from me, Loki,” she said softly.
“Well…” Loki started softly, “I need help apologizing to that girl I was telling you about the other day.”
“Again,” she only looked at him through the corner of her eye.
“Yes, again,” he said with a defeated sigh.
“Well what is it you did to make her upset,” Frigga asked. Loki sat frozen. Frankly, Loki was embarrassed, even a little ashamed, about what he did. Yelling at you like that… not his best moment.
“I had been upset and I might have…” Loki mumbled
“What, dear,” Frigga said, confused.
“I yelled at her, and said things I didn't mean,” he said, looking down.
“Oh, it's okay, let's talk through it,” Frigga said with a small, sad smile. After quite a few hours of talking, and a few tears, Loki had started to devise a plan. But in order to fully complete the plan he would need the help of his brother.
---
Loki had to wait two (agonizing) days to talk to his brother, because Thor had been off planet for some battle. As soon as Thor was back, Loki was off to talk to him. Thor's part in Loki’s now fully completed plan was that he would somehow distract you so Loki could prepare everything. Loki was hoping to enact his plan in three days. He was dying to talk to you, and apologize.
“Thor! Just the person I was looking for," Loki laughed. Thor had just walked in the place. Thor was very confused now.
“What is it you need from me, brother,” Thor asked.
“Oh, I need to ask you for a favor, brother," Loki said, his signature sly smile washing over his face. Thor raised an eyebrow.
“No, I will not be helping you with any of your tricks, Loki.” Thor said, walking past Loki.
“No,” Loki said, turning to face Thor, who still had his back to Loki.
“You don't understand, Thor, I messed up," Loki looked at Thor's back, hoping he would sympathize with him.
“You are always messing up, Loki, why do you need my help,” even though the words stung, he knew they were true. Thor had still yet to turn and look at him.
“I made her cry,” That's all Loki could think to say, to convey that he was being serious.
“Why" Thor said, turning to Look at Loki, “I thought you liked her?”
“I do! I really do..." Loki said, turning his face to the floor. “I just lost my temper and said some things to her that were hurtful.” Loki kept his eyes downcast. “But I need your help so I can apologize to her,” Loki said, looking up at his brother. Thor looked back at his brother. He could tell he was being genuine for once.
“What is it I need to do,” Thor said with a small smile. Loki gave a small smile back up at him.
---
This was Loki’s plan: First, he would gather flowers. He asked Alena what your favorite flowers were (after convincing her he had good intentions). Next, he would prepare a picnic, it would have grapes, nuts, books, etc. His Mother had told him about the best place to have a picnic, a spot right by the sea. He decided that he would teleport you both there, so you didn't have to worry about riding a horse. Second, while Loki is preparing everything Thor would be distracting you. Make sure you don't go near the kitchen or the library. Also to throw you off, so you don't think they are planning anything. Once Loki was ready he would have to Thor tell you to put on a nice outfit and meet him outside. But instead of Thor, I would be Loki you met outside. He would take your hand and teleport you two. You would see the beautiful seaside cliff and the picnic. Loki would tell you how sorry he was and everything would be happily ever after. Right?
Loki pored over his plan about a thousand times. He had to make sure it was perfect. Anything for her…
------------------------------
It had been a week… maybe? You started to lose track of time. These days you really didn't care about what time it was, you just sat in your room all day. Even though you handt known Loki for too long you were really upset by what he did. You have grown to like him a lot. You thought he was funny and cute. Of course he was a bit too mischievous but you liked that too. He is just so charming to you. But after all the things he said the other day… you just can't be bothered to do anything. Alena and your father were starting to worry though, see as all you did was sleep all day. Recently your father would personally come and knock on your door to wake you up at noon. He tried to talk to you and ask what was wrong. Alena on the other hand, never heard the end of it. Whenever she would come and get you ready you would tell her how hurt you were. She was (almost) starting to get sick of it. She was there the first day, you had come back to your room, crying, while she was making your bed. She really didn't understand why he had been such a jerk. Today she had come to your room to help you get really. Only to see, to her surprise, you had gotten dressed all on your own.
“So, are you feeling better today?” Alena asked, a bit suspicious.
“Yes,” you respond, “but Thor also came and asked for me.” you added. Alena was not surprised anymore. You only got ready because the (wrong) prince was asking for your presence.
“Well, at least you are out of bed,” Alena said with a small smile. You looked at her, sadly.
“Alena, what am I to do if I see him in the castle,” your eyes were a bit watery. She knew who you were talking about. There could only be one person. You, even after this time, were still very hurt over everything.
“If you happen to see him,” she started, putting her hands on your shoulders. “You just have to ignore him.”
“That's it,” you asked, teary eyed.
“Yes, and I believe you can do it, okay,” Alena said softly.
You nodded, ready to go out into the world again.
---
You head to the library. Your shoes clack against the marble floor as you round the corner. As you come upon the library's doors you see someone. Is it Thor? What the hell is Thor doing in front of the library? You walk up to the big blonde.
“Thor,” you call his name. He turns and looks at you with wide eyes.
“My lady, what are you doing here,” Thor asks, though a stressed tone creeps into his voice.
“Oh, well, I was going to go look for a book,” an awkward air settles into the conversation now.
“Oh,” Thor responds. You try to move towards the door, but Thor blocks you. This goes on for a few minutes.
“Thor, why won't you let me into the library,” you breathe, frustrated.
“Umm… well, you see…” Thor stutters.
“Yes,” you prompt.
“Loki is in there planning something for you,” Thor shouts.
You stand there, stuned. Did he say Loki? The prince Loki is planning something for you . Even after all the things he said? Maybe this was all a trick… because why would Loki even still care about you? The doors behind Thor started to open. You could see some raven hair peeking out of the door. He whispers something to Thor, but you can't make out what it is he said. He finally opens the door all the way. You see Loki. He stands in the doorway, looking everywhere but you. He looks almost sheepish, timid. He takes a few steps towards you.
“Hello, darling,” he says quietly. You stay silent for a moment.
“Hello… Prince Loki.” you say, feeling the surprising flip flip of something like attraction in your belly. Loki inched closer to you, but you continued to give him a death glare. “What do you want, Loki,” you say, exasperated.
“Please listen to me, darling.”
You blankly stare at him.
“I, I have something to tell you,” he struggles.
“Well then spit it out,” you raise your voice.
“This is very hard for me to say but-,” you cut him off.
“Loki, can you please just tell me what it is,” you interrupt, “I'm sick of your tricks,” you quietly add.
“Darling, I am so, so sorry,” your eyes widen at what he starts to say. “I never should have said all those things in the library, I didn't mean any of it,” he gazed deeply into your eyes as he spoke.
“How do I know you are telling the truth, Loki,” you say, dismayed, your eyes begging him to make you trust him.
“You just have to trust me darling,” he tells you, “I do have something to show you, though.” He gently takes your hand. You reluctantly let him guide you down the hall. He leads you out of the palace and to the garden. Once you reach the end of the garden he stops.
“Do you trust me?” Loki asked. It took you a bit to respond.
“Yes,” you said, nervously.
“Hold my hands,” Loki spoke gently.
Your hands met his, and theycradled yours perfectly.
Loki spoke again, “Close your eyes.”
You obeyed his direction, but after several moments of nothing happening you were just about to open them again when the blood rushed behind your ears and you felt as if a gust of wind had just carried you away. Your eyes snapped open, and to your astonishment you were no longer in the palace garden. In fact, the palace wasn’t anywhere in sight as you turned to and fro, taking in your surroundings. Surrounding you were tall grasses, dancing playfully in the light, salty breeze.
You met Loki’s gaze, speechless. He wordlessly took your elbow and led you through the grass. Nestled among them was a blanket layed over the ground, and a large basket with small parcels of food, two glasses, and a bottle of wine. You turn to Loki again.
You spoke in a small voice, “Why have you... Why have you done all this?”
“Because,” Loki answered, equally reverent, “You deserve to be treated better than I have treated you.” He continued, “I have been rash, rude, hot-tempered, and frankly, a bit of a jackass.”
The corners of your mouth curled slightly in a small smile.
The prince took a breath, “And through all of that you have remained perfect. You, well, have remained you.”
“I am not the kindest man, or the most reasonable man, or the most eloquent man, but I am a man who must be honest, to myself, and to you,” Loki breathed. A stricken look passed over his face as he spoke, finally, “I love you.”
Of every word Loki could have spoken, he chose those. Of every meddling word, he chose the three that made your mouth dry and stole the breath from your lungs. And before your brain caught up to your mouth, you spoke only one reply.
“I love you too.”
In an instant, Loki’s stricken expression changed into one of glee. He shifted imperceivably closer to you, and in a reverent tone he asked, almost whispering, “May I kiss you?”
You nodded softly, and then his lips were against yours in a reverie. You made a small noise as he deepened the kiss, pulling you even closer to his chest by your waist. You broke the kiss at the same time, and you laughed. Your laugh, like bells’ chime, was swirled around the grassy cliffs and over the sea, carried by the wind. Loki could have sworn he had never before heard such a beautiful sound. He grabbed your waist and lifted you, spinning you around in the air. His laughter joined yours in a melody.
---
You stayed together, looking over the cliff as you snuggled into Loki’s arms. You looked at him adoringly for perhaps the millionth time that day. His dark curls were windswept so undone and improper and not at all princely. So, in a word, perfect.
“I should head back,” you spoke reluctantly.
“You should,” Loki hummed.
You stayed, hands intertwined, with Loki for hours more.
Once you and Loki made your way back to the castle, smiling and giggling, Thor was there in the garden waiting for the two of you. He wore a big, bright smile. In a few big strides he enveloped you both in a big bear hug.
“I’m so happy you two were able to find each other,” he said. You wanted to give him your thanks for helping, but you couldn't breathe in his tight hug.
“Brother, let us go,” Loki choked out.
“Can’t you accept my affections once, brother,” Thor teased with a huff.
“We can't breathe, Thor,” you squeaked. Thor immediately let you both go, stepping back to let you both catch your breath. Once you could talk again, you put a hand on Thor’s forearm.
“Thank you, Thor, I think your meddling really helped us see each other,” you smile kindly at him. Loki rolled his eyes, but you knew he was thankful to his brother.
“Now we shall feast!” Thor burst out suddenly, slightly startling you. “I'll get Mother, meet me in the great hall,” Thor said, before running off to find Frigga. Loki turned to you, taking your hand in his.
“Shall we be off, my lady,” he wore his signature sly grin, raising his eyebrow at you. Will that grin ever not turn you into a blushing mess?
“We shall, my prince .”
