Warning Sign

Summary:

“I don’t love the President’s son. If anything, I’m using him.”

Veld scoffed.

“Taught you to be a better liar than that, kid.”

Notes:

To the song “I Found” by Amber Run about the intergenerational parallels between Vincent and Tseng and the TsengRu and VinVeld pairings, two of my favorite FFVII pairings.

I'll use you as a warning sign
That if you talk enough sense then you'll lose your mind
And I'll use you as a focal point
So I don't lose sight of what I want
And I've moved further than I thought I could
But I missed you more than I thought I would
And I'll use you as a warning sign
That if you talk enough sense then you'll lose your mind

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“You know, Tseng, I found love where I shouldn’t have too.”

Tseng looked up from the monitors that showed Rufus Shinra from every angle, his eyes hardening on his Director and mentor.

“What?”

“Don’t play dumb with me, kid. You’re brilliant. The best man I got. I know you love him. Does he love you back?”

“No. I mean, I don’t know. I don’t…he’s just my charge. It’s just an assignment. The President…you… I don’t. It’s not…”

Veld crossed his arms over his chest.

“Look, kid. You gettin’ all tongue-tied? I ain’t gonna tell you what to do, but love…well, it’s always messy. When work’s involved? Good fuckin’ gods almighty.”

“Thought you didn’t believe in the gods, Veld,” Tseng muttered.

“Don’t mean I won’t take their names in vain for good measure, just in case. Remind ‘em what I think ‘bout ‘em.”

“Sir…”

“Don’t you fuckin’ sir me. I’m tryin’ to talk some sense into you, ‘cause I wasn’t able to think clearly about Vincent Fuckin’ Valentine before I fucked that all up, and fallin’ in love with a fuckin’ Shinra is much worse than fallin’ for a Valentine. Especially this ShinraAre you aware of what love does to you?”

“I don’t love the President’s son. If anything, I’m using him.”

Veld scoffed.

“Taught you to be a better liar than that, kid. Look, just be careful, yeah? I’ve learned that if you think you’re attached to sense, love’ll make you lose yer whole damn mind, and you’ll find that yer lost without it. No marbles, no sense. Got it?”

“I’ll be fine,” Tseng said. “But thanks for the warning, sir.”
