Spyro the Dragon Reboot Essay

Summary:

My newest take on a reboot universe for the Spyro the Dragon franchise.

Combines aspects of the classic and Legends series, with a few refs to Skylanders.

Chapter 1: Team Spyro 1

Chapter Text

OVERALL

  • Spyro is not alone, several other young dragons join on his adventures in this universe.

  • They all avoided the original crystallization from Gnasty Gnorc not due to their size but because they fell in a crevice when the crystallization spell hit, after which it passed them by.

  • Each of them represents the five Dragon Tribes from the original game (Artisans, Peacekeepers, Magic Crafters, Beast Makers and Dream Weavers) as well as the two scrapped Tribes whom are part of this universe (Machinists and Aquifiers).

SPYRO

  • Main character, loveable cocky and brash, yet heroic and kind purple dragon we know.

  • Raised by Artisan leader Nestor and his wife Artemisia. Ignitus, poet and Elder of Fire, is Spyro’s godfather and honorary uncle.

  • Like the Legend Series, he is a dragon of destiny. Though it is not because he’s purple, but his ability to use more then one element. Legendary Dragons aren’t hence noticeable until they are seen displaying their elemental prowess.

  • In short, he is a combination of all three incarnations of Spyro (Classic, Legends and Skylanders) but mostly looks and acts like Classic Spyro.

  • Despite appearances, Spyro due to being raised by Artisans has an in depth knowledge of the arts, and has shown to have skills in painting, sculpting, cooking and music (especially guitar).

  • Is most well rounded of the team, and has surprising leadership and strategy skills.

  • Polyamorous, in a relationship with Cynder and Elora.

  • Prior to his legendary Status, his Breath Element was Fire.

FLAME

  • Reimagined as a Peacekeeper Dragon. Has two fathers, Magnus and his husband Gunnar.

  • Is bigger, thicker and stronger then Spyro instead of being a palette swap. Something like a younger Magnus (in his Reignited design).

  • Is the muscle of the team. He isn’t as agile, has the shortest glide and shortest range fire breath. But he has the strongest charge attack and unlike the others his charge attack can harm some larger enemies.

  • Despite being the brawn, he is also big on heart and big brother on the team.

  • Has a crush on Ember, whom initially only had eyes for Spyro. However, the big loveable drake eventually manages to win Ember over.

  • Element Breath is Fire. He doesn’t have a big range but he is better at weaving heat and flames in his physical blows.

CYNDER

  • Magic Crafter Dragon. Isn’t as physically strong as some others, but has the strongest magic and best control over her breath weapon.

  • Is born with the mark of the Dark Master on her forehead, meaning she was destined to one day become his puppet release great darkness upon the Dragons. Hence she was abandoned by her parents upon hatching.

  • Taken in and raised by Magic Crafter Dragoness Nimue, whom doesn’t believe in destiny and believed Cynder could overcome that destiny.

  • Adaptations of the Legend trilogy take place after this universe’s version of A Hero’s Tail, where Cynder is forced to give in to darkness and release the Dark Master. But she averts her destiny by breaking free of his thrall with her friends’ help and eventually be a key player in the Dark Master’s final downfall.

  • There are a few parallels with DC’s Raven, and that is intentional on my behalf. Cynder even has some of the trademark snark and dry wit Raven has.

  • Despite being called Cynder she is a Dragon of the Wind Element. Nimue gave her name with the mistaken assumption she’d be a fire element. The name stuck though because Nimue still thought it sounded cool.

  • Under the Dark Master’s thrall gains the additional elements of Fear, Poison and Shadows, and even when the Dark Master is destroyed keeps these powers.

  • Loves Spyro because he isn’t the only one whom never believed in the destiny of darkness from the starts, and always believed in her. The other team members were worried but as they got to know her, becoming true partners and would do anything to save her.

EMBER

  • Is a Dream Weaver in this continuity. Daughter of Dream Weaver leader Lateef and his mate Nyx.

  • Of all the members, her wings are the most developed and actually can perform flight unaided instead of merely gliding.

  • Is actually one of the taller members of the team, slightly taller than Spyro.

  • Flashy, a bit vain and spoiled, but has a sharp tongue. Prone to an ojou-type laugh. Thinks herself fabulous. Can be kind and generous to those she considers friends or loved ones. Doesn’t like getting her claws dirty but she will if she has to.

  • Had a crush on Spyro, and wasn’t shy about flirting with him. But she got over it and Flame managed to woe her instead.

  • Is a Fire Dragon. Also as a Dreamweaver has the ability to dreamwalk and to dispel nightmares.

ZINC

  • Based on a minor NPC from Shadow Legacy, though heavily reimagined.

  • While a kid in Shadow Legacy, she is around Spyro and the others’ age. She is still the smallest among them.

  • Due to her small size, she cannot do much physical damage. However, she is the fastest of the team, and is difficult to catch once she picks up speed.

  • Is a Beastkeeper and hence is able to calm down animals and tame them. However, soulless beasts, like the ones Gnasty and the Sorceress or the constructs of Spirit energy like Ripto’s have no soul and cannot be tamed by her.

  • Is a bit of a cutesy ditz, utterly adorable. Has a Cajun accent and a pet swamp-octopus named Squishy which she always carried around with her.

  • Nicknamed Zee for short.

  • Her father is Conan of the Peacekeepers, but her mother is Corinne of the Beast Keepers. She looks more after the latter, but is still daddy’s little girl.

  • Is a dragon wielding the Earth element.

  • Has a huge appetite and an insane metabolism. When they defeated Crush, whose giant club was a chicken drumstick, she was able to eat it whole despite it being three times her size.

Chapter 2: Team Spyro P2

Summary:

Adding two members

Chapter Text

TWO MORE MEMBERS OF TEAM SPYRO

In this universe, there are two more Dragon tribes, based on scrapped concepts for the original Spyro games. The Aquifiers, whom are the protectors of the Dragon Worlds’ bodies of water, and the Machinists whom are the inventors.

As a result, aside from Spyro, Zinc, Cynder, Ember and Flame, I introduce two new members.

ECHO

  • Based on the seahorse-esque Dragon Echo form the Skylanders games.

  • True to her name, instead of a breath element, she has a powerful Sonic voice. It seems to be a light counterpart to the Fear Breath that Cynder controlled.

  • She is mostly focused on getting a pearl which is the most prized treasure of the Aquifiers, the sacred Pearl of Wisdom whom was in the hands of one of Gnasty Gnorc’s generals.

  • She has more of a punk aesthetic to her, which fits with her love of music and attack methods.

  • Loves to listen to music and wants to make her own music band. Spyro said she’d make a great Artisan. Despite that, Echo has a great love for the Aquifiers way of life. And despite her look making her appear a rebel, she is in fact hard working and willing to do her part for her community.

  • Similar to Spyro she can be cocky or brash. But she is even more temperamental then the Dragon, making Spyro look calm. She is quick to raise her voice. She can be reserved, but if her temper is triggered, she can become loud and wild quickly. She does have a gentle side though, even if she can butt heads with her teammates. Also tends to keep up with Spyro in Snark to snark combat.

  • Like Spyro, she has balanced stats. The only thing she lacks is flight or gliding, as Aquifiers don’t have wings (they are an aquatic species after all). Though she is the best in the water, moving like a torpedo. Her sonic voice also is stronger in the water due to it travelling faster in the water.

  • She gains a romantic interest in Zinc.

DROBOT

  • Loosely based on the Skylanders character of the same name.

  • Not a biological dragon, but he was created by the Machinists. A robot dragon which is fully sentient.

  • He was invented by the Machinists Dragimedes, whom infused the soul of a dragon egg whom was damaged in an attempted raid on the nests in the Year of the Dragon, which cost him his mate and brood. Only one egg remained intact enough for him to use his invention to keep the soul of the newborn alive. For years he did everything to keep its soul going, infusing it into a dragon gem and use it to power his robotic creation.

  • Drobot has Pinocchio syndrome and wishes to be a real dragon.

  • Think a male Penny Polendina, but with elements from Markov from Miraculous Ladybug, Marvel’s Vision and DC’s Red Tornado.

  • He was originally in a prototype body with only attack prowess being physical, but he incorporated a welding torch in his mouth to have a replacement fire breath. He would modify himself, mostly with tech stolen from his enemies to become more powerful.

  • Thanks to the modified tech he gains wings, lasers, missiles, has various weapons to emulate various breath weapons. He can use the equivalent of a fury but it risks frying his systems and taking him off line, and breaking his spirit gem. As long as the gem remains intact he can always build a new body.
