Chapter 1: A New Home
Chapter Text
Amity Blight was nervous. Her parents had moved her to a new town, again. Her father, Alador, was a mechanical engineer, and had work all over the country. They had spent the last year and a half living in the suburbs of New York, during which Amity hadn’t made a single friend. She was shy, awkward, and anxious. She was ready for a fresh start in Gravesfield, Connecticut.
“So, what do you think?” Alador said, gesturing to their new, gothic house. The house had several towers, dark wood balconies, and stained glass windows the color of blood.
“It looks exactly like you’d imagine a house in a place called Gravesfield would look like.” Amity said indifferently. Alador hummed a small sound of agreement before pulling out his phone.
“But this house is special, dear.” Odalia put her hand on Amity’s shoulder. “It’s about time we find a house for a permanent residence. With the twins off in college, we didn’t need that big house anymore. And I know you had… social troubles in your last school. But I have faith that you’ll finally find some friends in this new town.” Odalia smiled, looking down at her daughter.
“Plus, there’s a brilliant robotics lab only a thirty minute drive from here. Your father will be able to provide for us handsomely. Isn’t that right dear?”
Alador was preoccupied typing rapidly on his phone.
“Alador!” Odalia called sternly, getting his attention.
Alador looked up briefly from his phone. “What? Oh, yes. Of course my love.”
“Now Amity,” Odalia began. “The movers have finished setting everything up. I have a business meeting starting shortly, and your father will be heading off to work soon. I trust that you’ll spend the remainder of the day organizing your new room and getting everything ready for your first day of school tomorrow.”
Amity nodded. “Of course, mother.”
As Amity walked through the opening rooms of the house, she really began to appreciate the sort of grim, dark vibe the architects and interior designers were going for. The cabinets were a dark black wood with red, diamond patterned glass fronts. Their ebony dining room table had golden claws at the feet, matching the small silver ones on all of the red-seated chairs surrounding it.
Amity made her way to the highest level of the house, where her room was going to be. Her bed, desk, bookshelf were in place, but the majority of her things were still boxed away. She sighed and began unpacking her books.
Well into the third box of books, Amity stopped. “Good Witch Azura…” Amity mused, looking at the book in her hand. She laughed a bit. “I haven’t read these since I was a kid.”
She looked around the room. The only things she’d unpacked were the first three shelves of her bookcase, but that was enough to deserve a small break, right? Isn’t not like her parents would come check her progress anytime soon.
Amity plopped down onto her bed, and began to read.
The books were just as good as she remembered. Azura’s noble quest, her magical training, her companions, and her greatest rival, Hecate. They were all the same as they were when she was a kid.
Amity read well into the night, and by the time she finished the third book it was well after midnight.
Amity looked up at her alarm clock and gasped. “Oh no. I need to get to bed.” Even though she’d barely unpacked any of her things, she knew she couldn’t stay up any later. She turned off the light on her nightstand and shelves the third book. She put the fourth book in her backpack before getting under the covers. After a few minutes, she drifted off to sleep.
———————————
Amity awoke to the sound of her alarm at 7:45, an hour and a half before her first class was to start at her new school.
Amity walked to the bathroom, brushing out the knots in her green hair that came from sleeping. She touched her black nail polish, and made her way over to her new closet. She swung open the door, and it was empty. “Oh, right.” Amity said to herself. She never got around to actually putting her clothes away.
She found the box labeled “Amity’s Room - Clothes”, the label having been perfectly printed by her father’s own design.
Unlike many girls her age, Amity didn’t own many clothes. She mostly had several sets of the same outfits, with a few extra articles here and there. She decided on her black three-quarter sleeved blouse, pair with wine-red leggings and a small moon necklace given to her by her older siblings.
She looked in the mirror one last time. She shrugged at herself. She looked like she always did; just okay.
The time was 8:35, forty minutes before her first class.
“Amity, dear,” her mother called from downstairs. “Come down and have some breakfast. We’re going to be leaving in a few minutes.”
It was one of Odalia’s policies to always be early. Like she always said, “Being early is being on time, being on time is being late, and being late is unforgivable.”
The first few times Amity heard her mother say this, it confused her. By the transitive property, wouldn’t that make being early unforgivable? But after several times of not living up to her policy, Amity understood what she meant.
Amity made her way downstairs her backpack on one shoulder.
“So, Amity dear. Did you finish unpacking your room?”
Amity began to feel nervous. Her mom would surly yell at her if she found out that Amity had barely done any work. And Amity hated it when anyone yelled. “Well, it’s almost finished!” Amity lied cheerily, hoping her mother would believe her.
Luckily, Odalia seemed to only be paying half attention to Amity. She was busy making herself some coffee. “Very good, dear. Have it finished by tonight.” She replied, without looking up from her cup.
Alador walked upstairs from the basement. “Good morning, father.” Amity said politely.
“Is it morning?” Alador said, looking at his watch.
“Oh goodness Alador, have you been working all night?” Odalia walked over to him, cupping his face in her hands. “You need to get ready for the day. Your management position at the new facility starts today. You better go get ready.”
“Hm.” Alador grunted. He walked up to the second floor, where Amity’s parents’ room was.
Amity had just finished eating her cereal when her mother looked at the clock on the wall. “It’s 8:45 Amity, time for us to leave! We don’t want to be late for your first day, now do we?”
Amity nodded, making her way toward the door.
Odalia drove Amity the short distance to the school in silence. She pulled right in front of the main entrance, letting amity out of the family minivan. Odalia rolled down the window as Amity made her way up the stairs. “Have a nice day, dear!” Amity nodded, slightly embarrassed as she saw several girls walking past, laughing as her mom pulled away. They were probably laughing at her, Amity thought. Have her mom drive her to school was embarrassing, even though she was only 15 and couldn’t even get her learner’s permit yet.
Amity briskly walked through the front doors, and went straight to the library in the main hall. She sat down and got out Good Witch Azura book four, trying to read it as discreetly as possible. It was widely considered a children’s series, but after starting on the nostalgia train last night, she couldn’t stay away. Amity looked around the small room. The only other people there were a small group of friends. One of them in a purple and white hoodie-shirt was making some weird face and doing a silly voice. Amity couldn’t quite make out what she was saying, but the girl’s friends laughed at it.
Suddenly, the girl in the purple shirt looked over to where Amity was sitting. They made eye contact for a brief seconds before Amity looked away and hid her face behind her book. Please don’t be walking over here. Amity pleaded in her head. She really didn’t want to say something to make herself an outcast this early in her first day at school.
“I like your green hair!” The voice was coming from right in front of Amity.
The only reason her hair was green was because of her mother. Amity’s mother and older siblings had natural green hair, and her mother always insisted that they match. Amity had never really liked it, but she didn’t dare argue with her mother. But she wasn’t about to say all that. “Oh, uh thanks.” She replied, lowering her book slightly. The girl’s face was only a few inches from Amity’s. Then, the girl’s eyes drifted down to the book Amity had been using as a shield.
“Oh my gosh!” The girl cried. “Is that Good Witch Azura Four! I love that series!”
Amity slowly moved the book into her lap. “You do? I thought I was the only one…” Amity smiled shyly.
The girl sat down next to Amity on the bench. “Yeah! I love that series, it’s my favorite. Magic, adventure, epic quests, friendship, enemies to lovers, what more could you ask for in a book!”
Enemies to lovers? Amity thought. There hasn’t been anything like that in the books she’d read… Amity laughed slightly anyway. “Yeah, these books are pretty great. Unfortunately, I only own the first four. I never got the fifth one”
“Oh, well you can borrow my copy!” The girl pulled the fifth Azura book out from her shoulder bag.
“Do you just carry this with you all the time or?”
“Oh yeah, I always have it with me. It’s my favorite one of the series, I’ve read it like a bajillion times. I keep it in here so I can read it again whenever I want!”
“Well, I hope I really enjoy it too.” Amity said, smiling. “And, I’ll make sure to give it back to you as soon as possible.
“Great! I’m Luz by the way, Luz Noceda.” Luz stretched out her hand. Amity smiled and took it, giving it a small shake.
“It’s nice to meet you, Luz. My name is Amity.”
“Cool! Do you wanna come meet my friends!”
Before Amity could respond, the school bell rang out over the library.
“Oh, well.” Said Luz. “I’ll find you at lunch, okay?”
Amity nodded, smiling. Had she actually made a friend on the first day? She certainly hoped so.
Chapter 2: With Us
Summary:
Amity’s first day is going pretty well so far. She has her first two classes, and Luz introduces Amity to her friends!
Chapter Text
Amity made her way to her first class, Biology. Amity was mildly excited; Science was one of her better subjects, although math and programming were always her favorite.
Amity arrived at class before the tardy bell, and made her way to the front of the class. While she never got along well with other students, she was always beloved by teachers.
She was putting her stuff down when she heard a voice right beside her say her name. “Amity!”
She turned to her right. Luz was crouched down right at her eye level. “Hi!” She said, slightly whispering. “It’s me, Luz! Looks like we have the same first class! Mind if I sit here?” Luz guesteded to the seat beside Amity.
Amity nodded, choosing not to say anything. “Cool!” Luz said, taking the seat.
“Listen up class!” An older looking woman stepped to the front of the room. “Welcome to the first day of the new semester! My name is Mrs. Jenkenmire, the Biology and Physiology teacher at Gravesfield High School. Most of you are sophomores, correct? Raise your hand if you’re not a sophomore.” Amity looked around the room. No one raised their hand.
“Alright, looks like we have a solid sophomore class. As sophomores, you will be taking the CAPT this year. This test will assess your knowledge of science, mathematics, reading, and writing. As your teacher, it is my job to make you as adequately prepared as possible for the science portion of the test. As such, we will be studying a wide variety of topics. Our first two units will be Biology, but later on in the semester we will be studying other scientific disciplines. Now, has everyone picked up a syllabus from the front of the room?”
Amity didn’t. But she didn’t want to speak up… it seemed like everyone else had gotten one. Suddenly Luz raised her hand. “I didn’t get one, Mrs. Jenkenmire.”
The teacher nodded, and handed one to her. “Now that that’s settled, we’re going to start our first lesson.”
“Here.” Luz whispered, sliding the packet of paper over to Amity. “I noticed you didn’t get one.” It was then Amity say that Luz already had a syllabus, sitting on her desk.
“Oh… thank you, Luz.” Amity smiled slightly. Luz beamed back at her.
——————
After class was over, Amity walked out into the hall, trying to figure out where the computer lab was for her programming class.
Luz walked up behind her. “What are you looking for?”
“Oh, just the computer lab.” Amity replied.
“Well, it’s just down the hall and to the left, it’s got a small sign on the door that says ‘computer lab’, you can’t miss it!”
“Cool, thanks.” Amity paused. “Are you headed that way too?”
“Nah.” Luz waved dismissively with her hand. “I’m not great with computers. I’ve got to my Creative Writing class! But I’ll catch you after class, when lunch starts! Just wait for me out side the computer lab, and then I can introduce you to all my friends!” Luz walked off in the opposite direction. “Byyyeeee frieeenddd!”
Amity smiled to herself. “Friend…”
Suddenly a girl with pink her bumped into her. “Ew,” she said. “I can’t believe the new girl became friends with the weirdo. And I thought she had a chance at a social life.” She laughed and walked away, meeting up with her group of mean girl friends.
Amity growled to herself. Some people were just mean.
Amity’s programming classes was fairly uneventful. They played an introduction game and a “Get to Know the Teacher” Kahoot. Amity sat by herself, and didn’t talk to anyone. She was really looking forward to lunch, but dreading it at the same time. What if Luz’s friends weren’t as nice and her? What if they made fun of Amity? But at the same time, if they were all as nice as Luz, then she would soon have an amazing group of friends. Amity smiled to herself. Finally, friends.
After a while, the bell rang to signal lunch. Amity stepped outside the computer lab and was immediately startled by Luz and her friends standing directly in front of her. “Hi Amity!”
“Oh. Hello, Luz, and co.”
“Well Amity, since we’re friends now I thought I would introduce you to my other friends!”
Amity smiled. I guess she just decided we were friends? Amity wasn’t really sure how it worked, but she was under the impression that there was supposed to be some declaration of friendship in order to be official. Maybe all those teen movies and books had been a bit off from reality.
Luz pointed to a boy with hair so blonde it was nearly white. He had dark circles under his eyes and a scar on his cheek. “That’s hunter.”
“‘Sup.” Hunter said, waving his hand slightly.
Luz continued, pointing to a shorter boy with blac, curly hair. “His name is Agustus, but we call him Gus.”
“Hello!” Gus said in a high pitched voice.
Luz cupped her mouth with her hand in a sort of mock secret whispering position. “He’s really smart, so he moved up a few grades. He’s younger than the rest of us.” Amity nodded.
“And finally, this is my girl Willow!” Luz put her arm around a girl with pretty, curly dark hair and round cheeks. She was wearing shiny rimmed glasses and had a flower clip in her hair.
“Hi!” Willow sounded extremely cheery.
“So, that’s everyone!” Luz said, gesturing to the whole group.
Amity bowed slightly. Why did I do that? She immediately thought. “Nice to meet you all. I’m Amity, and I just moved here from New York.”
“Wow, New York!” Gus exclaimed. “Did you live in the big city? Did you ever witness any stabbings? Give me details!”
“Uhm, no and no.” Amity replied awkwardly. “I lived in the suburbs and I never saw any violence.” Gus looked slightly disappointed.
“Aaaanyyywayy,” Luz said, trying to change the subject quickly. “Let’s head to the cafeteria!” She struck a pose, pointing straight down the hall. Amity found this slightly strange, but no one else seemed to notice it.
As everyone started walking down the hall, Amity found herself in the back of the group. She wasn’t really sure how to mingle with all these new people… what if she said something wrong? What if she did something to make them not like her? What if they already didn’t like her?
Just as Amity’s anxiety was about to reach full force, she heard a voice by her side. “Hey, Amity,” Luz said. Amity looked up, glancing at her new friend. “What do you think about our school so far?”
Amity smiled. “It’s pretty great. Way better than my old school.”
“Well what’s better about it?” Luz said, intrigued.
“The people. I’ve met plenty of nice kids already.” Most of the kids at her old school were really mean and cliquey. Although there were some people like that at this school. Amity thought of the pink haired girl she’d passed by earlier.
“Aww thanks! My friends and I are pretty great, huh?” Luz smiled widely. Amity gave a small smile back. She couldn’t be too sure, not just yet.
“Aaand, we’re here!” Luz exclaimed, standing in front of the door to what Amity assumed was the cafeteria. Peeking around Luz, amity saw a room about three times the size of the library, filled with a few dozen tables and a small lunch line/kitchen section. She guessed there were about four hundred students there currently.
“What do you think?” Luz said, looking at Amity expectantly.
“It’s… quaint.” Amity replied. It was a fraction of the size of the one at her old school. She looked around and saw no salad bar, no dessert line, or any other food supply besides the main lunch line and a small vending machine. Good thing Amity’s mom had packed her lunch.
Oh no. Amity’s mom had packed her lunch. That was so lame wasn’t it!? They’re gonna think I’m such a dork! Amity’s anxiety started to set in again.
“Come on!” Luz said, waving for Amity to follow her and the rest of the group to a small table in the corner. “Come sit with us! Oh, and today's menu is chicken and broccoli lasagna” Luz then cupped her hand over her mouth and whispered conspiratorially. “I wouldn’t recommend getting it. And if you didn’t bring anything, you can have some of my lunch. My mom always packs me way too much extra food.”
Amity smiled, relieved. “It’s okay,” she said confidently, sitting down at the table. “My mom packed me lunch too.”
Chapter 3: Insecurity

Amity sat silently, eating her peanut butter and jelly sandwich while Luz and her friends chatted away. Amity was spacing out, not paying attention to anything, when Luz called her name.
“Amity? Amity!” Luz yelled, climbing onto the table and waving a hand in front of her face.
Amity snapped back to reality. “Oh, sorry. Is everything okay?” She looked around, searching for a problem.
“I don’t know, you tell me?” Luz replied, concerned. “You’re not saying much.”
Amity wasn’t saying much for good reason. She always had the issue of being rude when she didn’t mean to. Often, she would say or do something that she thought was normal, but everyone else thought was rude. She didn’t want her potential new friends to hate her already.
“Leave her be.” Hunter said, flipping the hair out of his face. “You know it took me forever to actually start talking to you guys, too.” Gus and Willow laughed at that.
“Well, I guess you’re right.” Luz said, smiling apologetically at Amity. “I don’t want to pressure you. That would be mean, and maybe then you wouldn’t like me!” Luz was half joking.
Wow. Thought Amity. I guess everyone has insecurities. Even the girl who seems like the friendliest, most outgoing person ever.
“Anyway,” Willow began, trying to break the awkward tension. “What classes does everyone have this semester.”
Everyone at the table began pulling out their schedules. Amity felt slightly embarrassed to have already memorized hers, but she read it aloud anyway. “I have Biology, Computer Science, World History II, and Pre-Calculus.” Amity tried her best to sound confident.
“Wow!” Luz exclaimed, crawling across the table towards Amity. “Pre-Calculus? I’m still stuck in Algebra Functions. I’m probably not even going to take Pre-Calc, like ever. You must be a total super genius!”
Amity’s cheeks pinked. “I don’t think I’m very smart. I’m just really good at math.”
“Still, I’m terrible at math. Could you tutor me sometime?” Luz looked excited.
“Oh, yeah. Sure.” Amity said, smiling.
“Yes!” Luz said, pumping her fist.
“So… what classes do other people have?” Amity asked.
“Well,” Gus began, clearing his throat. “I have World History, AP Journalism, Art III, and Algebra II.”
“Man,” Luz said, her hand to her forehead. “All my friends are so smart! My classes are Biology, Creative Writing II, English 10, and Algebra Functions.”
“Sounds like you all have fun schedules.” Hunter said, leaning back in his chair. “I’ve been stuck with the most boring classes ever.” He began numbering his schedule on his fingers; “Geology, Algebra I, English 10, and American History. I actually do like history, but come on. We’ve learned everything there is to know about America, like, almost every year since preschool.”
Luz, Willow, and Gus nodded their heads in agreement.
“What about you, Willow?” Hunter said, nodding his head in her direction.
“Well, I have at least one class to look forward to. I’m taking a gardening class! And I am so excited!” Willow's face was in a huge smile. “Besides that, I have Geometry, English, and French.”
“Wooahh, you’re taking French!? That is so cool!” Luz burst out.
Willow blushed slightly. “Yeah, French is pretty cool!”
“So wait…” Gus said, putting his hands together. “Do any of us have classes together?”
“I have Biology with Amity!” Luz said happily.
“That’s great!” Willow replied, smiling.
Yeah, Amity though. It is pretty great. She finally had some friends. Or one, at least. But she really hoped the others would be her friends too.
“Hey, plant girl!” Yelled an obnoxious voice from across the cafeteria. “Catch!”
Before anyone could react, a hot, cheesy piece of broccoli flew across the room into Willow’s hair. Amity put her hand over her mouth, surprised, and anticipating Willow to throw her lunch back.
Instead, Willow put her head down silently and started picked the disgusting food from her hair.
“HEY!” Luz yelled, standing on top of the lunch table, pointing at the girl with pink hair that Amity had seen earlier that day. “Leave my friend alone! Stop being such a jerk, Boscha!”
I guess her name is Boscha… Amity thought.
“Yeah, right!” Boscha yelled from across the cafeteria. “I do whatever I want, loser!”
Luz’s face was full of anger. She jumped down off the table and began walking towards Boscha.
Amity had to act quick. If Luz did something, she might get in trouble! Amity swiftly got up from her chair and walked over to Luz, grabbing her wrist.
“Luz,” Amity whispered. “Don’t do anything stupid. She’s not worth it.”
Luz looked at Amity, the anger slowly fading from her face. She sighed. “You’re right. It’s just, she picks on me and friends every single day. She has for years. I just wish someone would do something about it…”
Amity thought for a moment. Maybe she could do something about it?
————————
That day after school, Amity watched as the Principal had a stern talking to Boscha inside his office. Amity couldn’t hear what he was saying, but she could tell Boscha was close to tears.
After what happened in the cafeteria, Amity had gone to the principal’s office and told him of the incident. She knew that the school had a zero-tolerance bullying policy, so she was sure that after she showed the Principal the security footage, he would do something about it. She was so glad that he did.
“Hey!” Luz said, from right outside the office door. “Did you get in trouble?” She whispered. Amity shook her head.
“Oh. Then why are you in here?” She asked, confused.
“I got Boscha in trouble.” Amity whispered back, giggling.
Luz gasped and smiled, opening the door and coming inside. “That’s great! Hopefully she won’t bother us anymore.”
At that moment, Principal Bump came out of his office, followed by Boscha. “She won’t be bothering you any more!” He declared. Boscha looked very upset, tears coming from her eyes.
But as she walked past Amity and Luz in the doorway, she whispered to them; “You are so dead!”
“Wow.” Luz said, her eyes following Boscha as she walked out the front of the school. “She’s really mad!” Luz started laughing. Amity let out a short, nervous chuckle. Had she messed up?
“Come on!” Luz said, holding her hand out to Amity.
Amity smiled and took it as she stood up, letting go when she was fully standing.
They walked out the building in a calm silence.
“Oh, my ride’s here!” Luz exclaimed. She ran up to an older looking woman on a motorcycle. “Hi mom!”
“Hey there, kiddo.” The older woman laughed, snorting a bit. “Who’s that?” She asked, pointing to Amity. Amity was slightly embarrassed.
“Oh, that’s my new friend, Amity!”
“Hi Amity,” the woman called out. “My name is Eda, I’m one of Luz’s parents!”
Amity waved. “Nice to meet you, ma’am.”
“Ma’am?” Eda said, laughing. “Your new friend sure is polite!” She said, before hitting the gas and riding off.
“She seems nice.” Amity jumped at the sound of her own mother’s voice coming from right behind her.
“Well, Mittens,” she continued. “I’m so glad you’ve made a new friend. Perhaps we’ll have her over for tea sometime.”
Amity nodded, nervous. “Perhaps.”
“Come along now, dear.” Odalia said, putting her arm around Amity and leading her back to her car. “You have a lot of work to do back home.” Amity’s face paled.
Had her mother looked in her room? Did she know that Amity had lied about being nearly done? What was her mother going to do to her? Amity’s anxiety was building up again, fast.
“Amity,” Odalia began after they were in the car. “I know that you didn’t finish your room. You barely got anything done.” Amity squeezed her eyes shut, beginning to panic.
“However, I’m not mad at you.”
Amity opened her eyes in surprise. “You’re not?” She managed. She had been fully expecting her mother to blow up on her.
“No, Mittens, I am not. I understand what happened.”
“You do?” Amity doubted that.
“Of course. You got distracted by your phone, didn’t you? Watching TubeTube and whatnot. You’re almost as bad as your father. So, as punishment, your phone will be confiscated until your room is up to my inspection.”
That wasn’t really what happened, but at least her mother wasn’t mad. Amity felt that explaining what really happened might make it worse, so she just went along with it. “Thank you, mother.” Amity said as she handed her phone to Odalia. “I’ll work on finishing it tonight.”
“Very good, dear.” Odalia smiled at Amity. Amity gave a small smile back.
They sat through the rest of the short car ride in silence. When they reached the house, Amity noticed that her father’s car wasn’t there. “Is dad still at work?” Amity asked.
“Yes,” Odalia replied sharply. “He’s been very busy lately. He told me he probably won’t be home for dinner, so I’m not planning on making anything. There’s food in the freezer and fridge for you. I’m going back to the office.” Amity stepped out of the car as her mother pulled away.
This was pretty typical. With her older siblings gone from home, she spent a lot of time by herself in the house.
She unlocked the door and turned on the light in the kitchen. Amity decided to make herself some boxed Kreft Mac-and-Cheese in a pot; it was one of her typical favorites.
After finishing it, she decided she should probably work on her room.
She unpacked box after box, her books, her computer, notebooks, clothes, her snow globe collection and other trinkets, and everything else. By the time she was finished, it was after eleven o’clock, and no one was home.
“Oh, well.” Amity said, before flopping on to her bed. This time, she actually earned some reading time.
Notes:
For those of you who don’t know to had different progression, the math levels for this school system are;
Algebra I - 7th, 8th, or 9th Grade
Algebra I Parts I & II (two separate classes) - 9th Grade, if student isn’t strong in math
Algebra Functions (after Algebra I Part II)
Geometry (after Algebra I OR Algebra Functions)
Algebra II (after Geometry)
Pre-Calculus (After Algebra II)
Calculus (After Pre-Calc)
AP Calculus (Hardest Math available; for college credit.)You only need four math credits to graduate, so a lot of people only take up to Geometry or Algebra II. Typically you take one class per year, but when split into two parts both classes are taken in the same year, in different semesters.
