Chapter Text
Shuuichi likes to believe that he is a pretty normal kid. Sure, he can see and sense paranormal things since he was a kid, but aside from that his life is as mundane as everyone else. His interests are well—maybe not very much like the other boys his age but they are still just ordinary stuff like reading and occasionally video games. Okay, honestly, if he isn’t academically proficient, his classmates might just laugh at his face for obsessively cataloguing something like plants. But they don’t need to know that.
Still, nothing that odd, right?
He blinked at the window and for a moment he thought he saw a silvery white fox leap through the schoolyard bushes below. He does see it from time to time since he was a child but never interacted with it. His mother often told him that fox spirits are not all benevolent, and have a reputation for tricking humans so he’s not sure whether to acknowledge it or not. He released a sigh and finally returned to the book he was reading. He had been daydreaming a lot recently. Lately it’s of vast, rich lands where he had not been before—full of wildlife and giant trees and plateaus.
The sun is setting soon, and he needs to head home. He gathered his notes and his books and walked out of the library.
The corridors are mostly empty by this time, and the late afternoon light gives him peace of mind. No one’s going to stop him asking for his notes, or for a favor to help them with a female classmate. He has begun to despise these interactions most times. It’s pretty clear that a lot of them, especially his male classmates don’t even like him. Someone even threw their eraser at him at one point and wrote on his desk. Sometimes he wonders why he even tries to mingle with them.
Is it all because of his hair and eye color? He had even kept his hair short enough to not stand out that much.
He sighed as he strolled back to his classroom to pick up his bag when the air around him shifted—a heavy feeling of dread creeping up the pit of his stomach. Goosebumps grazed his skin and he looked around him instinctively, feeling nervous.
If he focused carefully, he might be able to pinpoint where it’s coming from and investigate. His heart raced at the idea. Over the past year it seemed like his senses have heightened and he’s much more sensitive about otherworldly beings or events. He only usually sees the hazy forms of say, spirits, but his sight has seemed to have gotten clearer and can now see them almost physically, along with other nastier things. And like he expected, they can now see him in return.
He avoided them as much as he could, but this one seemed different—stronger, he’s sure of. He needed to know if it’s a benevolent entity, otherwise it might cause trouble in their school. He climbed the stairwell to the 3rd floor where the energy seemed to gather. With air this heavy, his hopes that it will just be a simple spirit has gone out the window. He stopped in his tracks and thought for a moment. What is he going to do exactly, though? It’s not like he can exorcise spirits and elemental creatures.
He stalked closer to the dim, empty classrooms and stopped by the last door of the corridor to a small storage supplies room. He tried for the door, and it opened.
He can smell it acutely in the air—like smoldering matchsticks—and he felt revolted. His skin prickled and he heaved dryly, his stomach turning from the negative energy that surrounded him. Cold sweat broke on his temples, and he leaned against the wall, collecting himself. His curiosity got the better of him.
He’s going to be sick.
He braced himself and looked around the dim room. A shadowy mass lurked around the corner, darker than black. There seems to be a summoning circle where it lingered, probably made by some bored students.
The extinguished candles surrounding it lit themselves and he froze. Fiery red eyes opened from the shadowy mass—it’s gaze locking into him. He cannot look away.
“I’m not the one who summoned you.” The redhead blurted out as sweat trickled on his forehead and along his back. His mouth watered and he swallowed hard, pushing his nausea back.
The entity, smoke-like, drifted close, it’s eyes blazing.
“What is your bidding?”
Shuuichi heard it ask, its voice emanating from the dark.
“I don’t have one.” He replied carefully, trying to suppress the cold shivers in his body.
It’s clearly a demonic entity, and he’s not going to make some kind of deal with one.
A growl echoed around the room and his gaze finally broke from the shadowy mass. It was the silvery white fox that now stood by the door. Its voice rang around the room—precise and cold.
“Lend me your body, I will defeat it.”
His green eyes widened in surprise. His body?
A low laughter reverberated from the shadows.
“He’s trying to fool you, human.”
“I could say the same about you, demon.” The fox replied.
Shuuichi can almost identify the sneer from the shadows as it drew closer, insistent.
“Blood has already been spilled. What is your bidding?”
Blood?
His green eyes drifted back to the crude portal and his heart clenched, seeing a familiar black feline that he usually feeds by the rooftop. It lay motionless in the middle of it, what looks like blood pooling under its fur. His eyes sting and he wondered if he shouldn’t have associated himself with the poor cat.
“Kuro—I want him back—" He declared with difficulty as he tried not to heave, his body cold.
“How useless.”
It almost sounded disappointed.
“Stop human—do not listen to him. He’ll ask for more. They always do. We should get rid of him.”
The shadow seems to expand—filling the small room.
“You humans are so pathetic. You can’t even get what you want without begging for our help.”
“I don’t need your help. I’m leaving—I’m taking Kuro with me.” The boy replied defiantly, eyes not leaving the feline.
Shuuichi lifted himself off the wall with difficulty, walking towards the cat, completely ignoring the two entities in the room. His legs felt boneless, and he collapsed on his feet, stumbling forwards.
This is just horrible.
He curled into a ball as his body shook, eyes falling close.
.
.
He woke up in a cold daze, eyelids heavy. He scanned the dark, candlelit area and sat up immediately, remembering the happenings of earlier.
The silver fox and the shadowy demon were no longer there. A mewl caught his attention and he whipped his head towards the sound, green eyes settling on the unmistakable black cat. It stared back at him uncannily—its once blue eyes now red. A shiver ran up his spine.
“Kuro—?” The boy whispered.
It sat there in front of him, observing his every move. It opened its mouth, and a voice came out instead.
“That fox wants your body.” Shuuichi blinked his eyes at it, utterly shocked.
“Why—? Did you possess Kuro?”
“The portal is already gone. I’m trapped here.”
The cat strode closer to his side. A shadowy smoke lifted from the small feline, forming a body.
“You owe me. The creature is fine.” The entity said as it motioned at the feline before him.
He owes him? Kuro is back?
“Why does the fox want my body?”
“You seem to be carrying one of their kin.”
“What—? What does that even mean?”
The entity cocked his head to the side, looking almost human, having a boyish face and stature—though his luminous red eyes and energy told otherwise. At least, he no longer emanated such overwhelming ill intent, albeit his knitted eyebrows.
The demon pointed a finger at him, gesturing to where his heart is.
“It’s inside of you, a fox’s spirit.”
Another shiver shot through him. This can’t be real. Is this the reason why he can see the paranormal?
He had observed him earlier when he lost consciousness, and he’s sure there’s a fox entity inside the boy. He can sense it acutely. It was weak but a demon can recognize another demon. He doesn’t even need to use his Jagan to see it. It lays there dormant it seems. It doesn’t really concern him, but the thought of it was quite intriguing. Fox demons are known to be sly and ruthless. What is one doing in the human realm and in a human’s body?
The pesky fox that lingers around him might become a problem, but he can just always try to scorch it with fire—and the boy being indebted to him will suffice and might secure a profitable bargain in the future. Something interesting might come out of it even.
“Alright, I believe you.”
Shuuichi reached for the feline beside him that was now purring contentedly and petted it. He feels warm, just like he usually does, and he doesn’t seem afraid of the demonic entity around them.
“Good.”
.
.
The boy eventually went home, and the cat-demon followed, lurching from one dark corner to the next.
He stepped inside a modest two-storey house and promptly discarded his shoes and outer uniform by the door. Compared from the outside, the interior looked almost sterile and empty.
“I’m home!” The boy exclaimed as he flicked on the lights, darting towards a framed picture of a beautiful woman with kind eyes by the small kitchen counter. The feline followed suit and sat close beside the picture, observing the redhead.
The boy immediately busied himself with pots and pans, washing his hands and then preparing some rice. He donned an apron and soon a sizzling sound filled the silence, and an appetizing aroma wafted in the air.
His green eyes fell back to the feline that’s still watching him intently.
“Could you leave him alone now? I don’t really mind your appearance.”
The air seemed to hum in reply.
The shadowy smoke flowed away, forming a silhouette in the middle of the living room—it’s equally dark hair and clothing now more prominent in the light. The cat curled on itself by the counter, going to sleep.
“Why did you follow me here?”
“Some foxes are watching you. I can’t let you die yet until you pay me.” The demon replied, shoving his hands inside his long, dark coat.
The anxiety he was feeling before came back and the boy frowned.
“Why would I die?”
“Who knows, they might eat you alive or extract the fox demon inside of you.”
The redhead selectively ignored the first part of the answer.
“Extract it?”
“If they forcibly do it, you’ll die. You’re too weak.”
His green eyes widened a fraction from his matter-of-fact tone before his shoulders finally slumped low. He turned his heels from the shadowy demon and continued his chores.
“Is that so.” The boy replied calmly, as if it is of no importance to him.
.
.
The moon had risen and Shuuichi is yet to find some sleep as he tossed and turned on his bed. For some reason he cannot grasp, a demon fox’s spirit resides inside of him.
The pits of his stomach twisted once again, and he fought the welling emotion that’s threatening to burst from his eyes. The last time he felt like this is when his mother passed away.
He felt so alone.
He sat up on his bed and looked around his dark room. Light filtered through his opened windows, illuminating the dark entity standing before it. He’s stuck with demons who either wants to kill him or steal his territory. He could’ve lived the rest of his life without getting involved in any of this. The dark silhouette turned around to face him—red eyes luminous against the darkness.
“Something is going wrong with this world.”
Shuuichi’s mind focused on his deeper voice like a beacon in the night. The demon strolled closer to his bed and his breath hitched, transfixed on his glowing forehead and fluid movements. His hand stretched out to him, forefinger grazing over his wet cheek. He didn’t register the tears he had spilled.
“Some demons can feed on your emotions.”
“Some will feed on your flesh.”
“Some will kill you just because they can.”
He brought his finger into his mouth and licked his tears. He doesn’t have an appetite for humans, nor can he understand why they’re an appealing prey to their kind. The boy isn’t completely human though, and that’s what makes him a bit interesting to him at least, otherwise he’d already perished by now with all his questioning—along with those who summoned him in the first place.
He's decided that he doesn’t really care that much about finding a stable portal as soon as possible. It’s the last thing he could think of right now. He can see it on the horizon like a premonition—can feel it in the air.
The worlds are colliding.
Soon enough the veil would be thin enough for all demons to pass through into the human realm freely. And whomever is behind it surely wants to take over these humans. It also meant that this realm will no longer remain a safe hiding place for his stupidly kind sister. Confused green eyes stare back at him.
“Let’s make a deal.”
“I don’t have anything to offer.” The boy replied nervously. Red eyes blazed in front of him.
“You have. I will bring you someone to take care of. In return, I will keep the foxes and other demons from bothering you.”
“Someone to take care of?”
The shadow-like demon nodded.
“Do we have a deal?”
Something stirred inside the boy. He can hear it clearly like the rustling of a thousand leaves—the beating of a demon’s heart. His tumultuous emotions are waking the sleeping fox inside. His face turned impassive, yet his energy seems to have intensified. This may prove to be a good bargain.
His redhead finally nodded in response.
“Do you have a name?” The boy asked, unconsciously leaning close to the demon.
“Hiei.”
“I’m Shuuichi.”

Chapter 2
Notes:
Plot ahead!
Chapter Text
The cat followed him to school the next few days. He wanted to tell Hiei to stop using Kuro to follow him around, but he guessed that’s better than an actual shadow doing so. On another note, he had tried offering him some food—and is yet to succeed.
He clearly isn’t the kind that eat humans. What does he feed on then?
The fox had seemed to keep its distance as well. He thinks sooner or later he needs to face it and ask some questions. He doesn’t know if that will cause some complications with Hiei, but he needs to know what’s true and what’s not.
Shuuichi was startled out of his musings as the teacher called out to him, a small smile adorning the man’s face.
“Shuuichi, am I boring you?”
He quickly composed himself and shook his head in reply. Their teacher turned around after giving him a concerned look and continued writing on the board as he proceeded with his lecture. Some snickering can be heard behind him and he could feel the hair on his nape rise as an eraser landed on the floor beside his chair in a nearly inaudible thud. He could feel the demon’s unmistakable red eyes watching him. He blinked and he heard another faint thud and a groan from the same place at the back.
“What the hell—?” He faintly heard his classmate mumble.
The eraser on the floor was gone.
Lunch break came and the redhead ran to his corner of the rooftop to eat. A black cat soon manifested, fluidly leaping to his side.
“I don’t understand human pettiness.”
Shuuichi shrugged as he opened his sandwich.
“They don’t like me.”
Red eyes blinked at him.
“You can ask me to scare them off.” Shuuichi looked at him in mild surprise.
“No. I can handle myself. They’re just kids.” Those words felt weird coming from his mouth.
“Hn..”
The cat-demon seems unsatisfied with his answer but he doesn’t want to get indebted to him more than he should. He doesn’t even know what he had gotten himself into. He just got carried away—confused with whom to trust.
But what’s done is done and he should be a bit more careful from now on.
.
.
Hiei stood at the edge of the rooftop, his third eye searching—traversing beyond the horizon. He had scoped the vicinity of the boy’s territory the other night and found no immediate concern. Aside from some utter dregs from the demon realm, no other powerful entity lurks in the area. The foxes hid farther away into a more forested land, and even if they come too close, he made sure that they won’t be able to possess the boy.
His vision soon locked on to a young ice maiden’s mind, connecting into her consciousness. A short message was passed between them, an image of a landmark and time.
The human boy doesn’t want anything.
It’s the same exact reason why he decided to choose him. Humans are generally greedy after all. It might change with the existence of a demon fox inside of him, but he’ll deal with it when the time comes. For now, it’s his safest bet on keeping his sister safe.
It didn’t take him long to traverse the structure-filled cities to the mountainous woodlands and he soon reached his destination, landing at the mouth of a cave in an area that didn’t reek of humans. Soon enough, an ice maiden emerged, her icy cold energy greeting him.
“Brother.”
Hiei shuffled closer, hands in his pockets.
“Yukina, I’m not giving you an option. You’re going to come with me whether you like it or not.”
Her eyes widened and she brightened inside before she could stop herself.
“You can see it, right?”
The ice maiden nodded solemnly. She had not been staying in the human’s realm for long, but she has loved the wildlife. The fauna was something she hadn’t seen before and was a sight to behold. And so, she kept her distance and observed from afar as to not disturb them. At times, the gentle creatures even come to her out of curiosity, and she treasured those interactions.
She thought of the barren, frozen tundra where she came from and she wavered.
The demon realm is far too harsh for such creatures to thrive. And she doesn’t want to go back.
“I only allowed you to stay here because I trust you. And I don’t trust what’s coming.”
Yukina looked conflicted as she stared at her brother warily, her body drawn tightly to herself.
“Where are we going?”
“An acquaintance.”
.
.
What Hiei has said unnerved him deeply. A premonition he had said.
The veil between the demon and the human realm is being torn. Once thin enough, demons would be able to freely pass between worlds.
Shuuichi didn’t believe it could be true but seeing traces of it with his own eyes proved him wrong. There seemed to be a foreboding gloom amongst the heavens. If he didn’t know any better, he’ll just ignore it as a weather condition—but what looked like a concentration of energy can be seen in the horizon, its borders making everything it touched fuzzy.
A heavy feeling sat in his stomach. The demon realm’s flora and fauna alone could devastate their own wildlife, not to mention the human population itself—what more of the powerful demons that reside in it?
He heaved out a sigh and emptied his dreadful thoughts. He has yet to become a caretaker, if anything. For now, it’s what’s he’s going to think about. The shadowy demon has left his home and he hadn’t felt his presence for the majority of the day.
He crossed the school gates and was greeted by a familiar face. It was his classmate, Maya. She seemed rather stressed lately, and dark circles had formed under her eyes.
“Can I walk with you, Shuuichi?” She asked tentatively. He gave her a nod and continued to his path home. She’s quite friendly with him but he had never walked with her before, as she’s usually with her male friends.
They made it to the residential area, and he finally decided to ask after the long silence.
“Is there a problem, Maya? You look unwell.”
“I—Uhm.. I wanted to tell you something.”
The girl stopped walking at this point, looking utterly guilty.
“Takeshi and the others, the other day—they took that cat from the rooftop. I’ve known that you’ve been taking care of it. I wasn’t able to stop them—”
She looked like she’s about to cry as she gushed the words out and the redhead held up his palm up before her.
“It’s okay. The cat is fine Maya, I took him home the other day.”
Surprise passed her features before it turned into something resembling doubt. It looks like she wanted to say something else but she eventually gave up, nodding in agreement.
They continued to walk in silence until they reached the redhead’s home and Maya has yet to part ways with him. Should he invite her inside? Actually, out of everyone else, she was the nicest to him. She’s a bit talkative but overall she is pleasant to be with.
“Do you want to come in?” He asked, glancing at her.
A flush crept on her face. She seemed not to notice that they reached their destination.
“M-me? Are you sure?”
They strolled through the small front yard, and he reached for the door. He turned the doorknob and gooseflesh ran through his body. Maya was close behind him and he turned around abruptly to face her.
“Ahh actually, I forgot that I need to go the grocery store today. Maybe another time?”
Her blush seems to deepen and she nodded, taking a step back.
“Yeah sure, I mean—I need to go home now as well. It’s nice talking to you though.”
He nodded in response and walked her out front.
“See you around!” She declared finally, walking briskly back to where they came from.
Shuuichi turned to the rustling in the foliage and wasn’t surprised to see a familiar silvery fox.
“The demon bound you to him.” It said as it stared at him with its golden eyes.
The redhead’s eyebrows raise in question.
“If you meant that I made a deal with him, I did.”
A low growl escaped the fox. The boy can feel something warm forming at his wrist and he instinctively looked, finding what looked like a smoldering string tied around it. His green eyes widened.
“It’s that demon’s energy.” The fox replied, eyes squinting in his direction.
Fire?
“What does it do?” The boy asked despite himself.
The fox scoffed at him.
“Do you want to find out?”
The fox lunged in his direction and he reflexively raised his arms in front of him. Its maw snapped on his wrist and a fiery burst erupted, hurtling the fox away.
It landed on its paws with a shriek—ears low as it scrutinized the smoldering band on the boy’s wrist. Shuuichi looked at it once more in utter amazement, before turning his attention back to the fox.
“Is it true? Does a fox’s spirit reside in me?”
“If you want to know the truth, undo your contract with that demon.”
“You’re really a pesky fox aren’t you?” A low voice declared, his shadowy form materializing between the boy and the fox.
The redhead watched as fiery energy blazed around him, stirring the air. It all concentrated on his right hand, forming a fiercely burning sword. The fox stooped low, back hunched; body taut.
“You can’t bind him forever—once he awakens, he’ll leave you. We’re his kin.”
Hiei sneered.
“Surely, he wouldn’t be hiding in that body if he wants to be with your kind.”
The fox growled loudly, tail whipping.
“Stop. Don’t fight in my front yard.” The redhead finally declared, voice raising amidst the electric air. The plants and the trees rustled in his mother’s garden and his body was tingling from their animosity towards each other.
Red eyes looked at him, irritated, as he strode to his front door, going inside. Flames dissipated from the demon’s hand and he followed suit, leaving the morose-looking fox outside.
Shuuichi stopped frozen by the living room as a young girl—a demon, sat there by the floor, petting the cat. She stood as she saw him, giving him a pleasant smile and he can only nod automatically in return, not knowing what to say. Hiei manifested on her side in a blink of an eye and he was suddenly stricken by their similar stature and eyes.
“This is Yukina.” The shadowy demon started, waving a hand at her.
“I’m his twin. I’m an ice maiden. It’s nice to meet you.” The female continued, her polite speech catching the redhead off guard.
She must be the other end of the deal, then. Shuuichi thought idly as he continued to stare at her striking aquamarine hair and sky-blue kimono.
Hiei arched an eyebrow at him.
“If you’re thinking we’re that uncivilized, then you’re mistaken.”
“My bad, I’m Shuuichi. You’re staying here from now on, right?” The redhead asked as nicely as he could, finally breaking his stupor.
Yukina glanced at her twin before nodding back at him.
“Alright, I’ll prepare a room for you to stay. Would you like some tea?”
Hiei seemed to loosen up. Yukina seemed to follow his lead.
Shuuichi smiled at the two.
Tea was served and the redhead was surprised that Hiei actually consumed it, looking relaxed beside his sister. He was watching him the whole time and it unnerved him quite a bit. The female on the other hand seemed curious as her gaze looked around the house, hands cradling the tea cup.
No one would even suspect she’s a demon in any circumstance—well she might get some looks for her unnaturally neon hair but that’s it. The redhead thought as he prepared more food than usual. She’s acts more timid than any of his female classmates. Could she even kill a fly?
She seemed like the stark opposite of her twin.
He served them both with some food and excused himself.
It definitely felt weird that there’s someone else in his living room besides himself. He rarely even stays there anymore.
It's been a year since he entered his mother’s room. A bit of dust has accumulated on the far corners of the walls but everything else had remained untouched. He closed his eyes for a moment and began to clean up. Thankfully, his mother and himself do not own that much stuff and he finished quickly, boxing the old sheets, curtains and some more of her personal belongings off to be stored somewhere else.
When he went down to the living room, the ice maiden had dozed off by the sofa, head reclined by the armrest. He looked at her for a while before nudging her shoulder gently.
“Yukina—?”
“You can go upstairs to rest, you look tired.”
Her red eyes fluttered open and she immediately looked around, shoulders slumping. Her twin is nowhere to be found. She rubbed her eyes and sighed inaudibly.
“It’s okay, I’m fine. Do you know where my brother went?” She asked with great interest, face hopeful.
The redhead shook his head from side to side. Her face fell and she probably saw his question-filled face as she continued.
“We were reunited just a few years ago. He was banished from our village for being a fire demon.” and a male.
The redhead’s chest constricted at the thought. Hiei was..rejected for being different.
“I searched for him all over the demon realm—and found out he did the same. But he didn’t seem to want to stay with me like I hoped.”
He wanted to heave a sigh.
So Hiei decided instead that he play brother with her? How can he trust him with his sibling that easily?
“I understand, don’t worry Yukina—I’m sure you’ll see him more often from now on.”
They have a deal after all.
The female reached inside her sleeve and took out a tiny pouch. She opened it and shook the contents on her palm.
“My brother seems to trust you. This isn’t much but please take it—"
She pushed her hand closer to him and he saw three luminescent circular stones. They were beautiful.
“What are they?” He asked, fascinated. He reached for one and raised it to his eye-level, inspecting it closely.
“They’re crystal tear gems. Ice maidens like me produce them from our tears.”
“Your tears?!” The redhead blurted out, his voice rising, flabbergasted.
He returned the gem on her palm. She seemed equally flustered by his reaction as she flushed and retrieved her hands, tucking the gems away.
Shuuichi is just horrified that she’s been crying in the first place, and probably, alone.
“I’m sorry, I just thought it might help—they can be pretty valuable.”
The redhead observed her tiny form, eyebrows furrowing.
“Of course they are. They’re your emotions, right? Even if they’re unpleasant ones.”
Her turquoise head nodded.
“That’s why I think, It’s okay to part with them. Please, reconsider.”
The boy sighed and nodded just to appease her. It’s not like he knows where to sell them in the first place. And it doesn’t feel right doing so either way.
Hiei sat up from where he lied on the roof, purple eye glowing. He didn’t mean to spy on everything they’ve been talking about but in the end his wariness got the better of him. He hid his energy as best as he could and watched everything.
It’s not like he doesn’t want to be with his only family. He just thinks he isn’t fit for this kind of role.
He also didn’t really think about what comes after he finds his sister. And so they parted ways, often, and he just watched over her from afar. It became difficult when she decided to cross to the human’s realm, but he didn’t protest either—since it’s dangerous for her to be out of the ice village and he on the other hand doesn’t want to mingle with humans. Naturally occurring fissures in the veil became scarce over time, and he cannot visit her more than he would like.
Now an opportunity presented itself. This is much better than letting her live alone amongst the humans. The redhead seems like a suitable one, albeit weak. He saw how he treated her gently.
It looks like they’ll get along just fine.
Honestly it would be better if that demon shows itself already. If it ends up being just another pesky fox he might just snuff its soul himself or make it leave the boy’s body one way or another.
He remembered the boy’s smile and he frowned. He never once saw him smile in front of those other humans.
Is it because of Yukina?
Surprisingly, the thought isn’t pissing him off.

Chapter 3
Notes:
I hope I'm not summarizing too much for the sake of pacing... because otherwise chapters will drag on which is not the aim of this fic.. :((
Chapter Text
That night he dreamt of a vast jungle, his agile limbs traversing it with ease. But the lush green foliage and towering trees morphed into swaying bamboo trees and he found himself surrounded with their sharp lines like a cage. There was laughter in the air and it soon died—and a demon, raven-like called out to him. He stopped in his tracks and looked back, but he was gone—and his heart was devoured by regret.
The last thing he saw was a glimpse of his pained face, imploring. He cannot hear what he says against the loud rustling of the leaves.
Shuuichi’s eyes snapped open, heart thudding in his ribcage. Hot tears were flooding the sides of his face as he tried to grasp the remnants of his dream, now fading.
He was sure, that was his friend. He was sure it did happen.
His name—his name is Kuronue.
The boy stumbled out of his bed in the dead of night, almost tripping from his own limbs and began rummaging through his mother’s boxed possessions in the corner of his room like a madman.
He came back, he’s sure of it. And then he—he took his necklace.
Wait---
This isn’t his memories. Whose memories are these?
His chest constricted in pain and he tried to stabilize his breathing. The loud banging of his heart might just kill him if he doesn’t calm down.
These feelings, these aren’t his, too..
Hiei jolted awake as he felt a wave of demonic energy burst from the redhead’s room. He quickly made his way to his window and slid inside, his guard up. The redhead was slumped by the floor, sharp demonic energy wildly flaring around him.
“Who are you?” Hiei asked, walking closer to the boy.
“Where is she—?” The boy asked in return, voice constrained.
“Where is that woman? I can no longer feel her presence.” He continued, his bewildered gaze falling unto him.
“You’re not Shuuichi.”
His green eyes seem to suddenly focus—and he collected himself as if nothing was awry, standing up to face the other demon fully.
“I am not. I made a deal with the boy’s mother.” The demon replied, his aura now dripping of a suppressive calmness enveloping the other. He held an object in his right hand, it’s chain glittering against the light streaming in from the outside.
“She’s dead.” Hiei stated simply, a bit unnerved of the unmistakably powerful demon before him.
“I see—I didn’t even get to know if she was finally happy having a child.”
He raised his right hand in front of him and examined the thin red band on his wrist. He looped his left forefinger around it and pulled.
The strand snapped—smoldering into nothingness.
Red eyes widened and he growled in response.
“You—”
“I don’t need it. I can handle this body and myself.”
“Where is he?” Hiei snapped, stiffening in place.
“Oh, he’s here—” The redhead gestured to himself, graceful fingers splaying over his chest.
The shadowy demon doesn’t believe him, he cannot feel a human’s spirit energy in there, it was all demon. He was completely possessed.
“We have a deal.”
“Is that so?” The redhead replied as he examined his hand and touched his hair—looking rather fascinated with his body. He looked at him once again and smiled.
“Don’t worry, young one. He honored it, yes?”
“And you? Why are you in possession of his body?”
“It is the agreement. And it is already fulfilled.”
His green eyes flashed golden for a moment, his expression turning somber.
Hiei took off the cover that bind his Jagan eye—peering into the mind of the demon before him. The fox just scoffed in return, eyes glowing in the darkness. He searched the vast void of his mind and he almost panicked, not being able to see anything, until he was shown what he’s looking for. The glow of his purple eye dimmed and his muscles relaxed a little.
“Do you believe me now?”
Hiei bound his Jagan once more.
“Tell me who you are.”
“You can call me Kurama.”
.

Shuuichi fell ill the following day, his body shaking, hurting all over. He remained curled into himself on his bed the whole day, and the twins can feel his energy fluctuating. Yukina decided to help him with his pains and his burning fever, her cold energy washing over him for a much-needed comfort. The ice maiden looked at the boy almost pitifully. Her brother left them alone most of the day but checks on them from time to time as she sat by his desk, keeping his temperature in check. She left when he was finally sleeping comfortably, his energy no longer in disarray.
By night his fever broke, and he was back on his feet albeit the deep ache in his bones. He descended to the kitchen downstairs and was greeted by the ice maiden who quickly asked if he was fine. He nodded in response and gave her a small smile.
Yukina cocked her head in response and just stared at him curiously.
“You seem to have grown.” She said as she stood closer.
The boy unconsciously touched his head, raking his fingers through his red locks. His eyes widened as he fiddled with his hair that now felt longer. He ran to the bathroom to check himself—and his locks did indeed grew. It now spilled into his face, the longest parts falling past his ears and his nape. He noticed something else and he pulled the neck of his pajama, revealing a teardrop shaped necklace.
It was the one from his dream. So last night did happen. Shuuichi thought as he took it out and examined it in the light. A red gem was in the middle of it. He expected to feel the pain once more but only a phantom memory of it seem to echo in his chest.
The accord is fulfilled. Do you want to see?
A velvety voice reverberated inside his mind and the boy froze. It was the fox demon. He looked at the mirror and his green eyes went blank as memories not of his own flooded him.
Kurama accidentally crossed a portal to the human realm when he was still a young fox. Demon traders were chasing after him and he leapt over a fissure in the veil, looking for somewhere to hide. Cool air and the sight of crimson foliage greeted him on the other side, dried twigs and leaves crunching beneath his paws. It was the first time he met a human. It was a boy dressed in a Yukata—frolicking in the fallen foliage, his dark eyes large and curious. The boy approached him tentatively when he saw him, hand reaching out as if to touch his snowy-white fur. His small fingers graze his coat and the boy’s eyes lit up. Sensing no imminent danger, the small human being too weak to possibly hurt him, the fox didn’t run away.
That was the last time he saw him.
Centuries later he crossed once again to the human’s realm when the foliage bled the same crimson that fell and painted the ground. The same color as the blood that stained his fur and pooled by his feet. He weaved amongst the foliage with difficulty, his energy leaking and dissipating into the crisp air.
He was badly injured by a hunter and he’d rather die than be held captive at the spirit realm.
That time he saw a woman who wept for a miracle. She sat under the blood red trees, curled into herself. He came closer to her broken form and sat in front of her, her prayers loud against his ears.
To her, the snowy fox looked like it descended from the heavens.
It was almost a dying wish. There was nothing left for him to lose. Kuronue was no longer with him. He had abandoned the very group he had built. He was so weakened it wouldn’t take much to kill him. He can’t even retain his form for much longer.
The woman’s body was also weak, and she fails to bear a child. Her lover had left her, and she wishes for a child of her own, against all odds.
He made an accord with the woman.
She would be able to conceive a child and he could have another chance at living—to return what he took that day amongst the bloodied fallen leaves of the bamboo forest.
“Human—”
“With all my strength, I’ll help you conceive your precious child. You’ll keep this for me in return—I shall come back for it when the time comes.”
Her morose expression dissolved and her beautiful face brightened.
She lifted her hands and a teardrop pendant was placed into her palms from the fox’s mouth. Tears welled up in her eyes as the leaves sway and fell around them—an image of a child with crimson hair and green eyes appearing in her mind.
.
.
Shuuichi still skipped school the next day, dedicating himself with tending to his mother’s plants and the old tree on their small yard. The plants seemed to lean into him whenever he came closer, and now he knows why he likes them in the first place. He closed his eyes and imagined them growing lush and more vibrant. His energy flared at the thought of it and when he opened his eyes, the plant’s stems has thickened, their leaves greener and shinier, stalks taller than before. His heart raced and he smiled as he touched them carefully, admiring their beauty.
The demon has been showing him things and how to do them—how to use and control his energy.
He had never felt this way for a long time. Excitement coursed through his body as the thought of re-growing whatever type of plant he wants inside their home become a possibility. He had always just kept them written in his notebook along with the seeds he tucked away under his desk. Looking at the now vibrant plant life in the yard, he focused on the sole neglected tree next.
A rustle of cloth made him turn around, eyes settling on a shadowy demon that promptly thrust a beautiful thorny flower to him.
“What’s this called?” The demon asked as Shuuichi carefully took the flower from his fingers.
“It’s a rose.”
“It looks like you.”
He went rigid in front of him, his heart skipping a beat. Did he just compare him to a flower?
He opened his mouth but nothing came out. All his mind can think about is that Hiei thought he looked like a damned rose. His cheeks felt warm and he prayed that his face doesn’t betray him. The demon only observed him curiously, eyes seemingly raking his form—not saying anything else.
The boy broke away from his gaze, fingers tightening around the thorny stem.
“The fox demon, I acquired some of his memories.”
“Makes sense.”
His energy and appearance have changed significantly in just a day.
“It felt like they were mine.”
Hiei thought about it carefully. The fox demon isn’t just merely possessing the boy—from what he had seen last night he had merged into the human and was a large part of him even.
“It’s yours. The moment your mother made a deal with that fox, he became you.”
The boy looked back at him and after a while, nodded.
His fingers unconsciously reached for the teardrop-shaped pendant that hung around his neck. Seeing his mother’s forlorn face turn into hope in his memories put his mind and heart at ease. The guilt that he felt for thinking that he is someone’s unwanted child and his mother’s burden seem inconsequential and petty now. Harboring resentment for a father that he didn’t even know had plagued him for so long.
It shouldn’t have mattered.
His mother wanted him, no matter what it took.
Shuuichi thought of the demon that stood in front of him. No, he isn’t dumping his sister on him.
Everything was actually for her.
“Hiei. Let me help you. I can’t just stand here watching that massive portal open.”
The shadowy demon’s eyebrows disappeared into his forehead.
“We have a deal—you’re not going to run around and risk your life out there.”
The redhead chewed on his lower lip in response, brows furrowing.
“I told you; I’m going to take care of those foxes and other demons who’ll come our way.”
“That out there—is not your problem.” Hiei gestured his forefinger towards the darkening, thunderous horizon.
“Let’s change it then. I want to fight alongside you.”
“Fight? No, you’ll just get in the way. Be a good human and follow the contract.”
Hiei shoved his hands into his pockets.
“If we’re one—just like you said, then I’m not as weak as you think. The fox hasn’t shown you anything yet.” The redhead countered, irritation seeping in his voice.
“If you want to help so badly, protect Yukina.”
“Who’s going to look after your back then?”
“It’s none of your concern.”
Hiei seemed to finally have enough and took off in a dark blur, disappearing from the boy’s sight. The redhead stared at the flower in his hand and pain budded in his chest.
.
.
Hiei remembered how easily that fox demon broke through his energy. Oh he’s seen, he’s not weak at all. He felt their difference that night—as expected of a much older demon. He wouldn’t just accept a proposition without a great price. He had traded with his life with that woman.
He really needs to stop rushing into things.
Actually, he only knows of one Kurama. He’s infamy is well known in the lands of the demons. But then he suddenly disappeared. Turns out he got hunted down and crossed worlds. And just like Yukina, he isn’t opposed to mingling with the humans.
What’s so special about these humans, anyway?
Hiei tried to silence his racing thoughts as he neared the vicinity of the portal. The familiar energy of the demon’s realm permeated the air around him and he grimaced. It’s almost as if—it’s infecting this realm.
His disgust grew as he traversed deeper in the area, as bugs latched onto the populace and bottom feeders littered the streets and hid in darkened crevices. Why the dregs of the demon realm are flocking here, he doesn’t know—but none of the humans seems to notice. He’d burn them all to the ground if it was up to him. He isn’t that charitable though, unless they begin to encroach to where they are. He escaped on top of an abandoned building and observed from above.
His hand was itching for his sword. If only the thing doesn’t break a thousand times, he would still be carrying it. He then felt his Jagan eye buzz and he looked up, to the now opening sky. The portal spanned from the ground up. What even would go through such a massive hole?
“Did you come from that portal? Who’s on the other side of it?”
A calm voice suddenly asked. A chill ran through Hiei’s spine. He didn’t even feel his presence materialize. A massive wave of spirit energy hit him and his red eyes focused on a tall, young man, his jet-black hair falling unto his forehead.
He had never felt such immense spirit energy before, nor he had seen any human possessing such. Who is this bastard?
Another joined him soon after, graceful like an apparition—his long teal hair flowing unto his shoulders. It’s a demon, no doubt, but less powerful than the human. Hiei unconsciously reached for his phantom sword, limbs tensing as they approached him.
“Even if I know, why would I tell you?”
The young man observed the small shadowy demon before him. Had they been too late? His growing annoyance with Koenma might just blow up one of these days. They didn’t even have the time to rest from their last mission as they rushed here to check the severity of the situation. They’re relying too much on Itsuki to close this godforsaken portal. As efficient his abilities are, it’s still very risky to tackle such a scale on his own.
“Talk now, you demon—and I might kill you swiftly. You’re a bit dangerous to be lurking around here in the human realm.”

Chapter 4
Notes:
This is the climax of the story.
And just a reminder, even though there's some over-arching plot in the background, this isn't a save-the-world fic so it might feel weird that it's ending on the next chapter.
Chapter Text
Shuuichi felt the tremors beneath his feet and he looked at the rose before him in a glass of water. The water was definitely disturbed. He pushed his chair away from his desk, finally taking a break from his planting frenzy and went downstairs.
“Yukina?”
She had been helping him decorate the empty house with plants and he was thankful for the needed distraction since his mind would only want to think about a certain demon.
The ice maiden stood by the living room window, her small form shaking. The cat was close by her feet, mewling softly. He approached her quickly, hand resting on her shoulder. Her red eyes turned to him, wide and concerned.
“I don’t feel so well—I feel like something awful is going to happen.”
“Does it have something to do with that tremor just now?” She nodded.
“I’ll go out and look for Hiei.” Yukina declared, resolve forming in her eyes.
He felt his heart thud forcefully in his chest and he fought the urge to gnaw on his thumbnail.
What should he do? Should he go out and check the situation? Leave her alone? Well—he might end up arguing again with Hiei but he’ll just think about it later.
“No. You can’t—I can’t let you.”
The ice maiden shook her head vehemently.
“I can’t just wait here. Did he tell you to look after me?” Shuuichi nodded, tight-lipped. He can’t bring himself to tell her that this was—just a deal.
“Do you also think I’m that weak?” She then asked as she turned to fully face him, her cold energy permeating the air between them. The redhead steeled himself.
“Yes.” He replied coldly—his sharp, prickling energy dominating hers. Her face fell and she drew her arms to herself.
He understands. He thought he’d be fine being the one protected, but it left him feeling weak and helpless instead.
“Please understand, your brother and I want to protect you.”
He reached out to take her hand gently, like a silent apology, as he tried to reassure her. Her face softened and her gaze fell down to the ground.
“I’ll come back with him.”
She nodded and his heart eased.
.
.
Hiei doesn’t care. He’ll burn everything. He’ll do anything it takes not to die from this bastard of a human. He’s definitely one of those self-righteous types. He can see it in his eyes as he looked at him—like he’s the most vile creature that have existed between the realms. He almost sneered at the thought that crossed his mind—in both the human and the demon realm, he is much reviled.
Hiei phased in and out of the human’s attacks in a dark blur, darting from one corner of the empty building to the next and bouncing off the walls. He cannot get close to him. Luring him into the dark interiors didn’t give him much leverage either. Those spheres of energy he kicks into his direction keeps him on the defensive as it destroyed everything it touched. He stood his ground and summoned a great flame that roared and lit the darkened space. Another sphere was sent flying to his direction—and it splintered into multiples—hitting him in all directions. An explosion of fire and spirit energy broke out, sending the projectiles flying all around, breaking the windows and walls with its utter force.
“Sensui—let me catch him.” Itsuki called out as he watched the fight in a distance. At this rate, the old building might collapse at the destruction they’re making.
“No. Conserve your energy.” The man retorted, closing into the demon that blazed furiously.
The fiery demon retaliated with raging flames that swirled and shot straight at him like a hungry animal. He shielded himself with his spirit energy and pushed through—firing concentrated attacks of his own in his blurry silhouette. Soon enough he’ll burn himself out. One of his attacks made contact and he followed quickly, concentrating all of his energy in a blow that sent the fiery demon bursting out of the ruined building.
Hiei collided into the ground below in a blindingly painful impact—retching blood as he tries to stand up immediately and losing his balance. The attack that hit him felt like he’s being ripped apart inside and he took in a shuddering breath, gathering himself. That bastard. That’s probably what he wants to do with demonkind.
He propped himself once more with his shaking arms to face him. His bones ached. It hurts to even breathe.
“Now—tell me who’s behind that portal so I could kill him.” The tall, dark-clad man followed suit soon after, landing in front of him.
Hiei laughed despite himself.
“I don’t know. And I don’t care.”
He was answered with a kick in his middle, its force sending him down rolling in the ground, breath leaving his lungs. His vision doubled. He curled up and he must be hallucinating things because he thinks he has seen the redhead from a distance, coming closer to him.
The long-haired demon re-appeared beside the human; concern etched on his face.
“Sensui—we’re wasting time in here.” He commented, standing rigidly.
“I’ll finish him then.”
Energy pooled in his hand and he aimed—and hesitated as a voice cried out to him urgently.
“Please, stop—"
A blur of white and a muzzle suddenly snapped on his wrist. He hurtled it away reflexively with a swing of his arm and it landed in all fours, growling at him.
A fox?
His eyes travelled back to the fire demon and saw a young boy running to his side, trying to collect him. His angry green eyes met his and he stopped in his tracks.
“What are you doing? That’s a demon.” The man asked as his eyes narrowed towards the pair.
“He’s my—friend.”
“You’re a human.” The man countered, stalking closer to the redhead that’s heaving the unconscious, bloodied demon closer into him. The silvery white fox leapt between them, tail flicking and growling loudly.
“He’s also a demon.” The boy countered, pointedly looking at the opposite white-clad demon.
The man’s energy flared as anger coursed through his body. His friend? What’s this he’s witnessing? Before he could stop himself, he raised his hand and shot at the demon in the boy’s arms. A sharp, electric energy filled the air—his attack colliding with a thorny vine that sprung and swirled protectively in precision with his shot. It ripped the thick vine apart but it managed to deflect his projectile elsewhere.
His eyes widened at the spectacle before him. The boy’s energy isn’t fully human. A hand gripped his arm and he met Itsuki’s worried gaze.
“We should go now. Leave them be. You’ll get punished if you hurt a human.”
An icy blue glare was thrown at him and he let go of him swiftly. He watched Sensui’s conflicted face contort into disgust as he began to briskly walk away. Itsuki gave the other pair one last glance before following suit.
The redhead examined Hiei’s tattered form in utter shock. He’s breathing with noticeable difficulty and blood was drying at the side of his mouth and his clothes. He heaved him carefully to his back and began the walk home.
“He’ll live.” The silvery fox beside them commented, leading the way.
“Thank you, for helping me find him.” The redhead replied softly. He was honestly surprised to find the fox lingering outside their house earlier. And without him sniffing Hiei out, he might have been too late.
The fox stopped and turned to look at him, its tail flicking gently from side to side. It replied with a squeaky noise, paws tapping closely beside them. The redhead’s eyebrows rose and he smiled unconsciously to himself.
It didn’t occur to him before, but compared to Kurama, this one is basically just a pup.
.
.
Shuuichi’s stomach churned as he cleaned Hiei’s wounds gently with a wet towel. His abdomen and his arms has been littered with bruises of varying discoloration and cuts—and the image of him flying out of that building came into his mind. His cloak was practically in tatters, and he still breathed heavily. He didn’t notice that his hand had stopped moving and his eyes refocused on the iridescent crystal that rolled by the side of his neck. He picked it up carefully and laid it on top of his chest. It looked like Yukina’s tear gem, but larger and different in hue. A knock then sounded by his door and the ice maiden stepped inside, bandages in her hand. He nodded at her and finished cleaning him. They bandaged his torso snugly and she began to heal him with her energy.
Worry was etched tightly in her face as he watched her, and he gave them some privacy. He went downstairs and threw the towel to the wash, then headed to the kitchen to busy himself.
What would he tell her if he was too late? He remembered racing to where he is as if he were possessed. It felt like deja’vu.
There was a voice that called out to him softly.
Why is he here? It was his duty to protect him—
Hiei woke up on a dimly lit room that smelled and felt familiar. He looked around to find the redhead sitting behind his illuminated desk, his green gaze meeting his. His mind suddenly registered the softness behind his back and he sat quickly—wincing at the dull throbbing pain in his bandaged torso.
“Careful—he broke some of your ribs. Please just rest for now.”
“How much time had passed?” The demon asked, reaching for his bandaged chest to examine it.
“It has only been four hours.”
“What happened after—? How did you find me?”
“That man you were fighting with was extremely strong. You could’ve gotten killed.”
Hiei’s brows furrowed, jaws clenching. Fortunately, it looks like the redhead didn’t get hurt in any sort of way. He looked at the ceiling and plopped back down.
“That other demon he was with stopped him from harming us any longer. I think they’re on a mission.”
“He wants to know who’s opening that portal. He’s a demon hunter.” Hiei replied bitterly.
“Why is he with one then?” The redhead asked.
The fire demon scoffed. The bastard definitely detested demonkind. With how strong that man is, he can crush that other demon beside him. So what gives? Who knows.
“He’s probably just usi—” The demon trailed off.
—using him.
A knot formed in the pit of his stomach. No, he and the redhead have a deal. He knows what he’s gotten into.
Well, they might just be the same after all. He despises humans in the contrary. In fact, he should despise this redhead—but he doesn’t.
He followed him instead in utter fascination and curiosity. He told himself it’s because of the demon fox inside of him. But is it the only reason? Why is he even spending energy thinking about this?
Hiei heaved a deep sigh and closed his eyes.
“Hiei? Are you alright?”
The demon could hear the boys’ soft footsteps getting closer.
“Should I call Yukina—?”
His red eyes opened and a hand grasped at the boy’s wrist, tugging him closer.
“Why—why did you come after me?” He asked as he watched him closely.
“I—I told you. I want to help you, right?” The redhead answered nervously, heart racing.
“Why?”
His hands clenched, mouth pressing together tightly. He felt trapped in the middle, not knowing where to go or how to proceed. His voice dropped to a mere mumble.
“I want—I want to befriend you.”
Hiei’s eyes narrowed and he let go of him.
“You’re so naïve.”
No. This isn’t what he wanted. He wants him to take care and befriend Yukina, not him. Out of everything this boy could want its friendship. With him.
Why would he direct his affection at him?
Shuuichi dodged the demon’s reply.
“You should rest now.”
“I’m breaking the deal.”
The redhead took in a sharp breath, taken aback.
“What? Why? Is it because of what I’ve said?”
“I told you to look after Yukina but you still followed me instead.”
The redhead furrowed his brows. This is ridiculous.
“Well Yukina is worried about you—and you know that. Is that really the reason?” Hiei’s energy flared and his red eyes glared at him.
“Yes—and because you’re making me feel miserable.”
Miserable.
The redhead swallowed back the tightening in his throat as his eyes welled up and his body shook.
He’s not going to cry over this.
In fact, he should be happy with this turn of event so he can go back to his ordinary life. But then why does his chest constrict in pain? Why is the pit of his stomach recoiling in response?
Hiei saw the shift of emotions on his face for a second—before it completely closed off, turning impassive. The boy stepped back from the bed and he wanted to bolt right out of there.
Why does this affect them both so?
“Alright.”
The redhead forced the reply out of his mouth, turning towards the door. Hiei’s gaze followed his form until he disappeared behind it. His hands fisted the sheets beneath him as he failed to suppress his flaring energy.
It shouldn’t be like this. Deals shouldn’t involve feelings. Feelings complicate things.
And to think—it started out just fine.
He cannot take back what he had said.
.
.
Hiei and Yukina were gone at the crack of dawn.
He rose from where he slept at the sofa and felt around him. There was only Kuro. At first he didn’t believe it, but the emptiness of the house loomed at him—even through the greenery that now littered it. He marched towards his dim room and turned on the light.
The fiery demon’s energy still lingered on his bed somehow and he fought the urge to lie in it and just go back to sleep like nothing has happened.
Maybe everything he had experienced until now is just a dream.
He went to his desk instead as his eyes fell on the rose that still sat vibrant in a glass of water. He snatched it unceremoniously—fingers tightening around it’s thorny stem. His hand shook and the pads of his fingers bled as he wrestled with the thought of throwing it outside his window or not.
He stood there completely frozen, eyes blurring.
He can’t do it.
He sat heavily on his chair and tucked his face in his arms—sobbing silently to himself. The feeling of loss enveloped his broken form and he continued to cry until the pain in his chest dulled.
He cried for everything—his mother, his true nature, of Kuronue’s death, of his death, of Yukina, and of Hiei.
—of finally wanting something and not having it.
Of feeling lonely and rejected.
The blood-red rose that fell on the ground started to wither as the boy’s emotions tore him apart.
Shuuichi wiped his tears with his sleeves as he calmed down, eyes searching for the flower. Pain once again stabbed his chest and he picked up the dying rose carefully—bringing it closer to himself, willing for it to live.
It’s the only thing that he had left.
He thought demons operated differently than humans but in reality, it’s just the same. Nothing is freely given and taken.
And he cannot just give, because he knows he would want something in return.
He is such a fool for he cannot bring himself to hate him.
But just like that, he was gone.

Chapter 5
Notes:
Edit: Finishing this experimental story made me realize that friendship fics are much more difficult to write.. Also, I'll probably write one last oneshot and then, I think I'm done revisiting this series. y.y
Chapter Text
Things have gotten far too complicated for Hiei’s liking. There’s a demon hunter prowling around that won’t hesitate to kill their kind. There’s that massive portal that he doesn’t know will neither open nor close.
Then there’s that redhead.
He cannot get him out of his mind. He cannot stop feeling guilty either. Why does it make him feel uncomfortable? Demons and humans make deals all the time.
For now they need to stay away from everything.
“Are the two of you fighting?” Yukina asked her twin as they walked amidst what it seemed like a lush garden amidst the city.
“No.”
“Then why are we suddenly leaving?”
“I don’t think it’s safe for us to stay together in one place.”
This isn’t a complete lie.
A demon hunter out there as strong as that bastard targeting Yukina or that redhead will be a definite pain to deal with.
“Would Shuuichi be safe alone?”
Hiei stopped walking. That demon hunter won’t probably bother him. He’s still partly human.
“He will.”
Yukina stopped walking.
“Brother, do you really want to be together? Or are you just trying to avoid your friend?”
Friend? Hiei flinched imperceptibly and he faced his twin.
“You’re right. I want to stay away from him. He’s too sincere for his own good—just like you.”
And just like Yukina, Hiei realized it was the boy’s sincerity that made him feel guilty and awful inside—and that he’s just taking advantage of it.
“Is that why you stay away from me too?”
The shadowy demon frowned and he averted his gaze.
You’re too good for me.
He’s too good for me.
Deal or not, if he isn’t able to even properly protect them both, then what is he even doing?
Yukina searched his face and smiled in understanding.
.
.
By the time the redhead returned to school, the other kids turned their heads to his direction whenever he passed, eyeing his longer vibrant hair that framed his face. He didn’t bother to cut it as he found himself actually liking it.
Only Maya was brave enough to comment on it, going to him at once and saying that it compliments his face. She sure was in awe how it had gotten longer by a few days but didn’t pry about it.
A brand new word that assumed his sexuality appeared in his desk the following day, written small enough so he can still read it. Surprisingly, it didn’t affect his feelings in any sort of way, and he just took out his eraser and rubbed it off. It was the last thing he could care about.
Rumors about the nearby Mushiyori city had been going around the school, some weird phenomena and paranormal activity supposedly started happening in its inhabitants it seemed.
And from what Shuuichi had observed, the portal looked volatile.
He tried to focus on his studies as the days dragged on to weeks, going back to his normal routines. Except his “normal” has also changed. More of his female classmates approach him now than ever before, involving him in conversations, and or asking him to hang out after class. He tried his best to escape the talking and decline the offers as politely as he could every time. The shift was quite jarring, but he doesn’t feel as repulsed by it unlike before. At least now, they actually talk to him, not behind him. Though admittedly, he still couldn’t wait to leave school as soon as the classes ended.
And fortunately, for some reason, Maya’s recent presence seems to deter the girls’ curiosity of him most times and he finds himself often with her company. He doesn’t really know how it happened either, but she’s becoming a constant at his side. His lunches aren’t spent alone either for she usually asks him to have it together in the classroom even though they ate in silence.
Shuuichi tried to focus on his sandwich and thought about making a bento for himself so he wouldn’t feel too awkward finishing before her. He stifled a sigh. Maybe this isn’t a good idea. He almost jolted in his seat as he felt a tingling sensation at the back of his head.
Someone’s watching him. He can feel it like a hand reaching through his hair.
He tried to ignore it as best as he could, knowing who it was.
.
.
There was a great disturbance in the air. Flocks of birds flew against a flash of red skies and Shuuichi felt the wave of energy that swept the landscape. He ran out to the rooftop as soon as the bell rang, investigating the horizon.
It seemed like the portal has been closed—or more accurately, it seemed to be in stasis. He can see a bird midflight trapped in it, frozen in time. A blur of white manifested itself beside him. It was probably waiting for him for some time now.
He looked at the curious fox and it yipped in response.
“There are spiritual beings meddling with it.” The fox divulged, tail flicking excitedly.
Spiritual beings.. Those are probably the same ones who hunted Kurama all those years ago as he saw from his memories. They were a formidable group to be dealt with alone.
His mind drifted back to the odd duo he and Hiei had encountered. Are they all working together? And that demon he’s with, are they just using him? Does he have a choice? Is he doing it out of his own will?
Are they even friends?
Partners?
Humans and demons, he guessed it really is complicated to forge connections with each other, just like him and his classmates—just like him and Hiei. The redhead sighed. He didn’t intend to think about him again.
“Hmmm—I honestly don’t want to cross paths with them.” He finally replied after a long pause, his vision focusing once more.
The fox only cocked its head to the side, looking at him like a puppy would. The redhead meets its confused gaze.
“Let’s go home before someone sees you.”
The fox squeaked in response and followed the redhead home.
“Can I call you Kurama?”
The redhead studied the fox that sat before him in the living room as he ate his supper. The fish that he offered him was consumed in enthusiasm and he was quite pleased in return.
“Hmm? I guess so.”
“There’s not much of us left. Please come back.”
“I can’t—I live here right now.”
“Do you like it here?”
An image of crimson foliage that stretched the vast lands entered his mind. A lone ethereal white fox walked amidst of it, fascinated in its beauty.
“Yes, he likes it here.”
The fox before him whined in answer, face flopping by the coffee table.
“Don’t you like it here? It’s much safer for a child like you. And there are other foxes for you to play with.” The redhead prodded gently, as he regarded the fox’s dismay.
The fox only continued to whine softly, staring at him. The boy chuckled.
.
.
Hiei had seen a group cleaning up the infestation near the portal. The portal itself dramatically decreased in size but it’s still there, remaining static. Surprisingly enough, smaller openings seemed to have opened in result from all that energy it released some time ago. He had taken a look at it himself and they seemed stable enough, unless those people close it as well.
A familiar redhead stood before the portal to the demon realm. In truth, he’s been watching him carefully ever since they have left his home. He manifested behind him like a dark phantom.
“What are you doing?” Shuuichi heard a familiar voice ask.
“I’m going.”
“You won’t survive in there in that form.”
“What is it to you if I go or not?” The redhead snapped back, eyebrows knitting as he turned to face him.
Hiei grabbed the redhead’s arm and yanked him back, making the boy stumble a bit and gasp.
“Don’t be stupid.”
The shadowy demon started walking away from the portal, dragging the redhead along. Shuuichi walked behind him, face flushing and heartbeat racing.
What is he doing?
He let himself get dragged to wherever he wanted. Thankfully, the path to the portal is concealed enough by the trees and the foliage in that public garden.
This is bad, he really likes him.
And probably more than just a friend.
Hiei saw the way the other humans look at him. Most of the females like him. Most of the other males seem to also begin to like him. The redhead in return never approached any of them willingly except for one girl he’s been spending a lot of time with. And for some reason, it irks him a lot that they are suddenly flocking to him. They openly disliked him before.
If it’s only because of his appearance, then they’re utterly stupid for not noticing it in the first place.
They soon reached a lake in the garden that Shuuichi recognized and they passed hurriedly, avoiding any sign of other people in the area.
“You can let go of me now.” The redhead remarked as they stayed away from the footpaths and weaved amongst the trees.
Hiei stopped walking and turned around to face him, finally letting him go.
“Why?” The demon suddenly asked.
“Why are you concerned? Shouldn’t you be saying that it’s none of your business?”
The redhead countered. Red eyes glared at him.
“Do you really want to die out there?”
“Of course not—but I need to return something after all this time. I need to at least try.”
Hiei grimaced in return.
“Let me do it?”
Shuuichi’s mouth hang open, eyes widening.
“What—? No. I need to do it myself.”
Hiei’s energy now flared.
“What difference does it make? When are you letting go of that guilt?” The demon blurted out, voice rising.
“I came to see you because I want to get rid of this same guilt.”
The redhead’s heart thudded painfully in his chest.
“What do you mean?”
Hiei reached into his scarf—took off his crystal necklace and presented it to him.
“I’ll be the friend that you wanted. Now give me that necklace and move on.”
“So you’re just doing this because you feel guilty?”
“No, let’s start over.” The demon motioned for his tear gem once more.
Shuuichi unconsciously reached for the pendant in his chest.
A low murmur can be heard at the back of his mind. It’s alright, child, he’s asking for our trust.
He undid Kuronue’s necklace and reached for the blue tear gem, looping it around his neck. If Kurama himself is willing to let go, then there’s really no point of arguing just for the sake of it. He’ll lose anyway.
“Just tell me where it is.” Hiei continued on a much gentler tone.
The redhead started towards the demon, arms looping around his torso in an embrace. His chest tightened as he tried to suppress his emotions, burying his face on Hiei’s shoulder. The demon stiffened in his arms and he held him closer.
How does he always manage to stir up him up completely?
“Thank you.”

Shuuichi stopped spending lunch time with Maya. It feels like he’s leading her on to something more that he has no intention of.
After all they are all the same—just like him, they all want something. And he isn’t sure if he can give it to her. He can see the way she looks at him or how her face brightens when she sees him. He knows because he’s feeling the same way for someone else.
He continued to finish his sandwich in solitude at the same corner of the rooftop. A familiar energy manifested itself and he can feel his heartbeat starting to race.
Hiei appeared in front of him, a vibrant red flower in his hand.
“I hate that this thing always reminds me of you.”
The redhead flushed.
Shuuichi hates the fact that his words affect him greatly. He reached for the thorny flower extended to him, trying to meet his intense red gaze.
“Are you here to make a deal? I’m not going to accept.” The boy joked, trying to calm his nerves.
“No, I just want to see your redhead.” The demon replied, sitting right next to him.
He reveled at the fact that his reaction is just as delightful as before—his face flushing even though he obviously tries to contain it. His three eyes won’t miss such things.
“How’s Yukina? Where are you guys even staying? Why don’t you just go back home—with me?”
He met his fiery gaze. Shuuichi’s heart pounded in his chest.
“What do you think of Yukina?”
“She’s—like a little sister.” The boy answered carefully.
Hiei studied him closely, eyes trained on his face and every movement.
“That fox is lingering at your place.”
“Yes, he does—he keeps me company at times since the two of you left. He’s not a problem at all.”
The demon finally looked away, shoulders relaxing.
“I’ll tell Yukina.” Shuuichi’s face brightened and his stomach fluttered at his reply.

The twins re-appeared in his home the following day when he got back from school. A smile erupted in Shuuichi’s face as he greeted them warmly, Yukina doing the same. Hiei was not looking at him but that’s a given. They readjusted pretty quickly like they have never left at all, and the boy was happy.
Shuuichi hasn’t really processed yet the thought of making them wear human clothes but he’s going to make sure that it’ll happen. Yukina was open with the idea, trying his smaller pajamas, shirts and pants. He’ll probably need to ask Maya about girl clothing at some point. Her twin on the other hand cannot be reasoned with and will take more convincing for him to even reconsider.
One thing he learned about Hiei as the days went by is that he can be bribed persuaded with food. He seemed to like his cooking, granted they don’t even need to eat regularly. He’ll just need to reward him often with food that he liked and suggest the topic of clothing once again.
“What are you even doing here? You’re a nuisance.” Shuuichi heard Hiei exclaim, pertaining to the fox.
He seemed pretty miffed that the fox not only appeared at his school but also at home. He doesn’t want to turn him away though, because honestly, he finds him adorable and because Kuro now has someone to play with.
“Kurama lets me do as I please.” The fox replied defiantly, staring down Hiei.
The said demon looked at him questioningly, eyes narrowing.
The redhead brought the steaming curry pot to the table while Yukina brought the rice. He just gave Hiei a glance and set the table.
“He calls you Kurama now?”
“Uhh, yes?” The boy replied, placing a plate of roasted fish for the fox under the table and then sitting down.
“Let’s eat, Hiei.” He continued, smiling at him.
Hiei sat down, still obviously irritated.
“Also, my name is now Shiro. Kurama gave me a name.” The fox interjected as he wolfed down the whole fish.
The shadowy demon only glared at him and began to eat his meal. He couldn’t care less with whatever they call each other but this fox needs to know his place. He came here first. He might just really lose his temper if he kept on being an annoyance to him.
His eyes drifted back to the redhead that sat across him. He was watching him in return and he smiled once more when their eyes meet. His energy flared at the sight of his pretty face.
No. He shouldn’t think about this too much.
Night came and Hiei escaped to the rooftop, lying to his back and looking towards the horizon. After the portal has frozen over, the skies within it have shone in a myriad of colors that’s especially visible at night.
There was a rustle in a distance as the redhead approached and sat beside him, clad in his pajamas.
“So this is where you sleep all the time.” Shuuichi started, making himself comfortable beside the demon.
The demon only grunted in response, not moving an inch.
“If I ask the fox not to come often, will you sleep inside?” the redhead continued, green eyes also fixated to the skies.
“If he doesn’t come back, I might.” The boy chuckled.
“That’s too much. He’s still just a child, you know.”
“Hn. Explains why he’s so annoying.”
The redhead shifted at his side, his hand almost touching the fabric of his clothes. He’s too close. His red eyes turn to him.
“Let’s make a promise.” The boy spoke in a gentle tone.
“A deal?”
“No—a promise between friends.”
“What is it?”
Shuuichi turned to him and raised his pinky finger towards the other.
“Let’s not hurt each other.”
Hiei’s eyebrows raised in question.
“Link your other finger with mine and it’s done.” The demon stared at him for a while as if to gauge him—before finally complying.
Shuuichi looped his finger into his as he raised his hand, smiling contentedly. It’s not like he’ll purposefully hurt him anyway—he doesn’t enjoy such things. But he seemed to be greatly concerned about it, so he obliged. The weight of the teardrop pendant bore into his chest and he remembered that he has yet to make a trip back to the demon realm.
Does it have something to do with it?
“You should go to sleep.” Hiei finally said, tucking his hand under his head once more.
His breath then hitched as the redhead leaned down to him, green eyes locking into his once more. A conflicted look passed on his face and he opened his mouth slightly as if he wanted to say something but then changed his mind the last minute. He laid on his side beside him instead, curling into himself.
Shuuichi can feel Hiei’s warm energy enveloping him and he closed his eyes.
“I’ll stay a bit longer.”
