Anyone who sees Suna Rintarou on a volleyball court, all watchful eyes and perfect reading of the plays, may have the impression that he is good at reading people. He is not.
It is as if leaving the court he lost a considerable amount of neurons and became the most dense person on the face of the earth. The problem is that he didn't know he didn't know.
Oh no, he considers himself so intelligent, but it took him 8 years to discover what everyone in Inarizaki realized when he and Osamu were still first-year students.
The truth was crystal clear: the two of them were in love. But as I said, Suna was dumb.
He went on dates, dated some guys and some girls, but it never felt right. If there were no problems in his relationships, Suna was more than happy to find one.
"Samu, I swear, he was breathing so loud! Seriously, I said like 'dude, see a doctor, this breathing can't be normal' and he got so angry, I don't understand"
"I'm sorry, Rin. I hope you find someone who sees how special you are and have normal breathing"
"Thanks man, you're the best"
Osamu wanted to be that person for Suna, he wanted Suna to choose him and when his turn came he wouldn't let him get away with it for such silly reasons.
"Samu, her laugh was so strange. It sounded like a choking dog. I swear!"
"Samu, the guy spent the entire dinner talking about Optimus Prime"
"Samu, she called me 15 times in the morning because she missed me????"
And the best worst excuse ever:
"Samu, I swear! He came in with a chicken in his arms. Wtf should I do with the fucking chicken?"
When Osamu decided to confess, Suna would start dating someone.
"What did you mean, Samu?"
"Nothing, Rin. I hope it works out this time"
This was repeated so many times that it seemed like it would never change. Until Suna ended her last fling and ended up on the stool next to the Onigiri Miya counter.
"Samu, I'm so tired! Why can't I date someone like you? Funny, smart, hot, kind, healthy breathing, no chicken at all"
"Why someone LIKE me? Why not me?" Osamu's voice trembled a little, but he stood his ground "Rin, I need to tell you. I am in love with you and have been for a while. So why not me?"
Many things were going through Suna's head at that moment, none of them good. What if it went wrong? What if the problem was Suna and not other people? What if Osamu no longer wanted to be a part of his life? He didn't want to risk it.
"Osamu, you are my best friend"
"I know you better than anyone, Rin. I know what you like, everything you hate. I'll never hurt you. I'll never do anything you don't like. Because I love you and because I know you"
Being honest, Suna had already thought about this. Because when everything went wrong on their dates, a little voice in his head told him "Samu would never do that".
"Samu..." Suna didn't think he could accept the proposal, but he wanted it so badly.
"I'm not asking you to marry me, yet. I am asking for a chance. I will still be your friend if you say no, you know. So what do you say?"
His didn't answer immediately. He stared at the man in front of him as if it were the first time he had ever seen him, really seen him. And he liked it.
Osamu waited patiently, as if his heart wasn't about to stop at any moment.
"You swear you don't have a secret chicken?" It was a genuine doubt, but Suna laughed when Osamu laughed and he loved the sound he made.
"I promise."
