Chapter 1: Of Water and Silver
Chapter Text
There she lay on her death bed surrounded by her daughters. She had watched them grow up, become women, and watch as they got married. Now they stand next to her in her final moments. This woman was none other than Ruby Rose. A life time ago she was a different person but then she woke up on that plane with chains tattooed on her wrists. However Ruby was not angry nor was she sad, she had lived a full life and she was happy with that. If she was sent back in time she wouldn't change a thing.
So there she lay, breath slowing as her body finally succumb to age like all things do. This would be her last memory, surrounded by her children. They may not had been her daughters by blood, but to Ruby they were her children no matter what. She was a proud mother and fighter and her daughters were sure going to pass her story on, no matter how many times she told the it was of no importance. Her silver eyes dulled as she closed them for the final time.

Something was different she felt like she was younger and had more energy. This must have been the afterlife to be honest Ruby was most surprised by the fact it existed. Then she opened her eyes expecting to see a white void or the gates of heaven or hell but not this. As she opened her eyes she saw a place she hadn't seen in decades.
It was her dorm room. The more she looked at it the angrier she became. It happened again, life had taken what was hers, first it was her chance at being a huntress, then it was her free will, now it took an entire life she had crafted for herself. She was ready to leave the mortal plane in her lifetime she had seen many things not all good and she was ready to die but life snatched that away from her too, like some thief in the night.
She looked to her wrists seeing the chains tattooed on her wrists further confirming that her life was real and not some dream. Looking around the room she saw her teammates, who she thought she would never see again, still asleep. The next thing she noticed was that the beds were a major safety hazard something she had learned to spot after looking out for her daughters, they were always up to some kind of mischief. It would be an understatement to say she would miss them.
She slid off the bed and then closed her eyes to try something. Upon opening her eyes Ruby glanced at her tattooed wrist to see that the veins were glowing a vibrant blue further proof that what she had lived was real. Ruby then went through her morning routine and got dressed in the beacon uniform. It was odd for Ruby, for her it had to have been at least 60 years since she wore this uniform. Now all that was left was to wait for teammates to wake up.

When Yang woke up she was still half asleep so she had yet to notice her sister Ruby laying on the floor staring a hole in the ceiling. After she got ready Weiss and Blake had also finished and we're now just looking at Ruby who hadn't taken her eyes off the ceiling. Then her sister spoke.
"It's about time you finish."
Now the three were somewhat surprised. Ruby's voice wasn't like it normally was, it was cold and gave off the tone that she was wiser beyond her years. Yang instantly knew something was wrong. How good of a sister would she be if she didn't.
"Ruby are you ok?" Yang asked
"Yes I've just been in deep thought about something" Ruby answered
Her answer seemed to be enough for Weiss and Blake but not for Yang. It would have been enough if Yang hadn't seen her eyes. Ruby's eyes were filled with a deep seething rage, an all consuming anger directed at the very world itself. Yang had seen eyes full of anger before mostly from pictures of herself, but it was never this bad. The look in those cold sliver eyes was the look of someone who wanted the world to burn and could make it happen but had enough restraint not too.
"Well alright let's get going before we're late" Yang said as she decided against prying. If Ruby wanted to talk about it she would. Though she was worried that her sister would bottle up her anger until it exploded with one big YANG!

A wave of rage swept over the planet of Remnant in the early hours of the morning. the Grimm started to stir from the sudden wave of negative emotion a wave so strong it even alerted her. In all her time in her eternal life very few things had ever caught her interest however this sudden wave of rage and malice had. It wasn't hate towards a group or person but reality itself. Even, herself, the great witch Salem wanted to rule Remnant not destroy it.
A twisted smile formed on the immoral witch's face. If she could find this person they would be a great asset especially if she could resculpt this rage for her purposes. However it did leave some questions, what caused such malice? There was no build up it just appeared as if it was conjured out of thin air. Such questions weren't important right now Salem had to find the source and take it for herself.

Ruby thought back to her previous years. A man had once said something to her she never understood what it meant until now. Ruby Rose would not obey fate, she would choose and her choice was to defy reality until she could erase it.

Ozpin sipped his hot chocolate as he got reports on the Grimm activity. This morning at approximately 3:47 am it massively spiked all around Remnant and all reports showed they were heading towards his school Beacon. At first he thought it was Salem making her move but he knew his former wife, she was too cold and calculating for a brazen move such as this. For all his knowledge he couldn't figure out why this happened but he would soon find that his knowledge was ill suited for this problem.

Ruby's classes were fairly simple most common classes such as mathematics, science, and language arts were the easiest mostly because of Ruby's vast knowledge on each subject. She had gained an incredible knack for quick learning it was one of the things she got in exchange for her free will, which in her opinion was not a good deal. However that didn't mean it wasn't helpful, she had used her gathered knowledge to help her daughters numerous times and to get her a job as a nuclear physicist. So in her mind she was good in those subjects.
The real problems started when she got to history and Grimm studies. The past of her birth world was all foreign to her and honestly this was her birth world but it wasn't her home, her home was a little cabin in upstate New York where she raised her daughters. On the other hand the creatures of Grimm were strange to her but they had nothing on the things in that waterlogged hell she crawled out of.
Now it was the finale class of the day combat class. Combat was something Ruby was very familiar with she had to be, because if she wasn't she wouldn't be here right now. In a battle for your life each strike must be made with the intent to kill, every move must be made with split second precision because if you didn't well then you could just kiss your ass goodbye. In her time in her home she had learned that humans had only really mastered one art the art of killing. It was as simple as human nature.
The professor Miss Glynda Goodwitch was choosing people to have spar against each other first had been Cardin Winchester and was about to pick a second being Jaune Arc that was before Ruby had volunteered herself. She hadn't done this without reason she had seen Cardin, the way he acts. He was a man who seemed too only want to spread hate because of this he had made the mistake of drawing Ruby's ire. The other reason she had volunteered herself was to let off some steam and seeing as that coincidence with teaching Cardin a lesson it work out well.
Ruby walked out to the sparring area with a look that said she was ready however the first thing many noticed was that she wasn't wearing her combat gear and was lacking her signature weapon. Instead Ruby wore a tan turtleneck with the sleeves rolled up to her just above the elbow as well as some jeans. On top of that it seemed as though she had viles of glowing neon blue liquid attached at the hip. In place of her weapon she just held a simple red pipe wrench. Ruby looked forward as Cardin entered the field.
"You know you should forfeit a real man would never hurt a little lady like yourself" Cardin said in a mocking tone
"Really now but I see no man here only a person who's entire existence is entirely predetermined, someone who blindly followes fate without making a choice of there own. Not much unlike a slave obeying his master." Ruby said her cold tone still ever present
Cardin appeared to get angry at her words and right after the match started he rushed forward preparing to swing his mace. Ruby was unmoving seemingly unfazed by her approaching opponent waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Then she saw the perfect strike right as Cardin started to swing his weapon she focused and throw her arm forward releasing a torrent of neon blue lighting. Cardin's muscles tended and spasmed as the the lighting made contact with his body.
"Would you kindly go to sleep" Ruby said coldly as he walked up and hit Cardin with the wrench which broke his aura and knocked him out. Ruby looked over to Glynda who had yet to call the match most likely because she was stunned by Ruby's actions. However it was clear who the winner was as Ruby left the sparring area.

Classes were over and Ruby walked back to her dorm well thinking about one of the break in-between classes. It was just before Miss Goodwitch's combat class when she when back to her dorm and when looking though one of the closets. That's when she found something that didn't belong, a locked chest, but not just any chest it was a chest of things she kept from her time in rapture a reminder of sorts. Ruby's eyes went to the glowing blue eve hypos on her hip it was a reminder of the horrors she endured.
That's when she noticed something or rather the lack of something, it was silent. Her body quickly adjusted into a combat stance preparing for something to fall from the ceiling or jump out from behind cover. Then she stopped, she wasn't in rapture anymore she had been gone for years but she never truly healed from what happened in rapture. Her mind was forever marred by the city however she always used it as motivation.
Now she was unsure if she still could. The hate she felt tainted her mind even more forcing her to reevaluate her decisions. She wished to defy fate, a task much easier said than done. Her choice had to be carefully thought out, lest there unforseen consequences surprise her. The people who knew were also a concern she couldn't trust anyone not even her own half sister. Yang was a good person much better than the person Ruby was now she shouldn't have to get mixed up in this situation. Other noteworthy people were Glynda and Ozpin who weren't to be trusted in the slightest, Ruby may have only been back for a day but it wasn't hard to see they were hiding something big behind the scenes.
As she finished her thought she arrived at her dorm. If things went her way things would get a lot worse before they got better.
