Chapter 1: Cuttlefish

Chapter Text

To whom it may concern, hopefully to none of you. I’m being held against my will to write in this cod-forsaken thing. Marie claims this to be therapeutic and that she always writes in one. There’s a difference between my journal and hers. Her journal is used to express her feelings about Four, mine is used for boring stuff like traumas. Total scam.

Marie has been on my case about writing in it, I’ve been putting it off for a while and I managed to get far till I got promoted. That’s right, it’s Captain now. Old squid retired and left the burden on me. I was quite surprised when he offered the position to me considering Marie and Callie are his grandchildren not to mention the original agents. But they’re pop stars and don’t have time to take over, must be nice.

Now that I think about it…if I’m in charge why am I listening to Marie?

Doesn’t matter.

This journal won’t be used to express my feelings that’s one thing I’ll guarantee. It’s about time someone fixed the way we recruit agents. Hell, even Four didn’t know who the squid sisters were that uncultured squid. By the power vested in me, this won’t be my journal entries, this will be a historical documentation on the members of this organization.

Let’s start from the beginning, Captain Cuddlefish my mentor.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three sprung out of the boss kettle, panting heavily. She wiped the dust off her forehead. The job had been done. Octavio was defeated. Three gripped her armored bike helmet of some sort and threw it off, landing into the deep abyss she didn’t care much. Three licked her lips contemplating whether to leave straight home or talk to the old man.

‘It’s not like they need you anymore…’ her mind told her, she quickly shook it off knowing those thoughts would lead her nowhere.

Three shook her head “Screw it” she muttered as she jumped changing into her squid form and super jumping out of there.

She landed by the shack with ease. After super jumping a couple of times you get used to it.

“Agent Three!” The old man grunted.

Three turned around, her hearts beating in her chest.

‘Was he mad? Did I do something wrong? Shit, what about the zapfish?! It just flew out!?’ Three’s minds swarmed her with multiple thoughts all at once.

Cuttlefish's stern posture changed, and a big grin spread across his face instead. He waddled over to Three and enveloped her in a big hug. Something Three didn’t know much of. It felt nice…odd but nice. It definitely wasn’t what she was expecting. Three froze unsure of what to do but before she could overthink it further the captain pulled away.

“You have a bright future here kiddo! Thanks to you the zapfish has returned to the tower and my old pal Octavio has got himself a new home” he limped to the circle-covered globe.

He tugged on the blanket revealing a snowglobe trapped Octavio. The sight was rather amusing, the look on his face certainly didn’t help.

“Let me goooo!!!” He growled, and Three chuckled.

Cuttlefish dismissed his complaints and returned back to Three. Cuttlefish smiled at Three and gave her a pat on the head.

“You’ve done enough agent, you can go home and rest now.” Cuttlefish walked away to his cabin.

Three’s hearts dropped, as much as she didn’t want to admit she had grown quite attached to her mentor. Was that it?

“After all, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow. Those pesky octolings are still out there. These patrolled aren’t gonna do themselves.” He muttered before shutting the door and leaving the agent outside on her own.

Seconds passed which soon became minutes. Three stood still as she processed the captain's words. Octavio eyed the squid in front of him before rolling his eyes as he turned around.

A loud rumbling filled the air, if anyone asked Octavio he didn’t hear it. The agent's face smiled as she continued purring. Despite the cold temperatures rising the only thing she felt was warmth, a warmth she wanted to keep forever.

Chapter Text

If I were to use one word to describe Callie, it would be reserved. It seems weird, right? Considering how energetic she is, believe me, I know. Despite that, she has her moments more so now than ever. It angers me to know Callie was being tortured and I couldn’t be there to stop it. Even so, all that matters is that she’s safe now.

And I won’t let anything hurt her…

Agent 1 is a pop star, along with her cousin Agent 2 they are known as the Squid Sisters. Although I’ll never admit to their faces their music is quite catchy. Marie if you’re reading this…shut up.

My relationship with Agent 1 is very…complicated. We’re friends but before it seemed more than that, now I’m unsure. I’ll admit I did have a tiny bit of a crush on her but now I’m unsure as to where we stand or if we’d go any further, but that’s beside the point.

This is the story of Agent 1 the Agent 1 I know, Callie.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“I don’t understand this, this is stupid.” Three grumbled as she watched the tv play some cheesy rom-com. Three wasn’t very fond of it.

Callie simply rolled her eyes at the squid's antics. They had been watching the movie for less than 20 minutes and Three had spent them complaining about the plot. Callie thought it was romantic but Three seemed to have thought differently. Very differently.

“It’s not that bad.” Callie defended the movie.

In all honesty, it wasn’t the best movie but Callie wasn’t gonna give Three the satisfaction she wanted.

Three scrunched her nose in disgust as the two protagonists shared a kiss “Watch them get into a fight, break up only to get back together in the end.” Three smirked

Callie groaned and shut off the tv, crossing her arms in defeat.

Three gasped “Oh come on but I was soooo invested!” She mocked

Callie shoved Three off the sofa, who in return laughed. Three seated themselves back next to Callie, slightly closer but none of them commented on it. With the silence overcoming the room they simply enjoyed the moment. Nobody spoke but it wasn’t needed. Three relaxed into the couch when she saw Callie fiddle with her tentacles, a habit Three knew far too well.

“Do you ever think of cutting them?” Three asked trying to distract Callie’s mind, she gently moved Callie’s tentacle to the side before letting her hand drop on top of the agents. Callie was quick to intertwine them.

They both didn’t know what they were, friends for sure but there was something more. Something that they didn’t know or would ever cross but nevertheless, they enjoyed each other's company.

Callie's invitation was lovely, but Three knew there was something more to it. Since the recent Splatfest with Marie winning Three hadn’t seen much of her. She figured it was the same for Callie.

“No, I like it long,” Callie replied as she fiddled with Three’s fingers choosing to play with them instead. Her answer or lack of shocked Three, she usually replied so animatedly about her hair and would even scold Three for even suggesting it. Her energy was one of the things Three adored the most about the squid. It was one that matched perfectly with her own.

Three bit her lip as she contemplated asking a question. She didn’t want to cause Callie more distress but it seemed by keeping it in, she was already doing that to herself. The longer Three stared caringly at Callie, Callie could feel her eyes water.

“I’m sorry…about Marie.” Three broke the silence

The simple question drove Callie into tears. She couldn’t help it nor hold it any longer. Things had been going so well till that stupid splatfest. She just wanted her cousin. The one who would spend time with her, care for her, and be with her always. Now it wasn’t like that. Marie was always busy and when she did return she was far too tired.

Callie felt miserable, neglected. Three noticed that. Three always noticed.

Callie leaded on Three, who in return wrapped her in an embrace. She buried her head in her shoulder as she tried to compose herself. Everything froze for a moment. Three knew it wasn’t the time but she couldn’t stop herself from blushing.

Three’s stomach churned at the sound of Callie’s broken whimpers. Marie was definitely gonna get a serious talk soon. Three adjusted their seating position till Callie was almost fully on top of her. Callie held on tighter as she took deep shuddering breaths.

Three waited for Callie to finally be ready. She was patient with her she knew the weight the pop star carried on her shoulders and was prepared to help her. The agent ran her fingers through her tentacles. Callie relaxed at her touch, she wasn’t sure why but she felt the safest with her.

Once Callie was ready she pulled back from Three, much to Three’s dismay. Callie stood up gave her a small smile and walked away to her room. Three was left extremely confused.

She sat there quietly not sure what to do or if she should do anything.

‘What is my position in this situation Three thought to herself as she contemplated whether to leave or to wait for Callie. She chose the lesser.

“I know you’ll be leaving for a while with gramps…” Callie emerged from her room holding a brightly wrapped rectangular box with hearts on it. Three looked at the box with curiosity.

“So I made you a little something, so you won’t forget me.” Callie smiled sadly.

She placed the gift on Three’s lap. Three looked up at Callie “Are you sure?” She made direct eye contact with the squid. Callie nodded and tugged on the bow, leaving Three to open it.

She gently peeled off the wrapping paper throwing it aside like a kid on squidmas. After pulling the last piece she looked at the cardboard box before carefully pulling off the lid.

Three furrowed her eyebrows.

“What is it?” She looked at the black cloth  “Is it a handkerchief? Looks kinda large.” Three chuckled as she pulled it out.

Callie snorted, taking the item gently from her hands and spreading it revealing a cape with the number 3 imprinted on it.

Three smiled “A cape?? What for.” Callie placed the cape over Three's shoulders tying the buttons together.

Callie fiddled with it and smiled once she was finished. It was a perfect fit on Three.

“You’re a hero Three. Hero’s wear capes.” Callie planted a soft kiss on Three’s cheek. “That and it has some special abilities”

Three was left frozen from the peck but quickly put herself together to give Callie a tight hug. Leaving for this mission was going to be a lot more harder than Three thought it would.

She just hoped when she returned she could be there for Callie.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Marie threw the hero shot at Three’s chest causing Three to wince. “You better stay safe out there.” Marie warned Three. She moved towards the table to pack more cans along with food for Three and Gramps.

“No, I’m gonna jump right into danger” Three deadpanned.

Marie pointed the specials can at the agent “Knowing you, you would. You have no idea-” she stuffed the suitcase closed “How much stress you’ve given me…and Callie.” She muttered the last part.

That was enough for Three to explode. Marie threw the case at Three before going around the table to wrap her in a hug. Three didn’t return it. Out of the two cousins, Marie has always scared her more.

Marie let go and pinched Three’s cheek “Stay safe if not I’ll rip your comics” Marie commanded, letting go of Three’s cheek.

Three touched her cheek gently before grabbing the bags. She turned with nothing but pure seriousness to the pop star.

“You better talk to Callie soon. You might’ve won the splatfest but you’re losing your cousin because of it.” Three frowned “Just talk to her or at least make an effort…she misses you and I know you do too. Take care of her please.” Three didn’t wait for Marie’s answer as she shut the door before she could see.

She just hoped they figured it out soon. Preferably before she returned from this mission.

“Took you long enough!” Gramps hollered. He was standing outside in a funky getup waiting for his partner in crime.

Threes ears twitched at the volume of his tone “Jeez Cap do you want to attract the Octarians attention?” Three complained.

Cuttlefish grabbed a bag from his agent's hand and began shuffling through the forests. Cuttlefish show his head and dismissed her “The Octarians hearing is one of the main reasons we won. Did I ever tell you that story?” Oh great “Well it all started-”

Three sighed as she listened to her boss's rants on the Octarians hearing. A long trip this would be indeed.

Chapter 3: Agent 2

Chapter Text

Agent 2 is a very complicated person but if you told her that she’d deny it and fight you on it. She’s a sarcastic witty person. Our personalities are similar that’s why we clash but we also get along with our polar opposites. Also known as Callie and Four.

All I have to say about Marie is that as much as she’s a pain in the ass I love her deep, deep down…somewhere. She’s always been my go-to when I need help and she’s one hell of a nurse. My only complaint is that she has horrible taste in people, aka Agent 4 but if they make each other happy then I approve.

Although she wasn’t too happy to find out about my ‘fling’ with her cousin I know she cares for me either way.

Overall Marie is one of my greatest friends and a great role model to follow. Marie, hold this against me and I swear to cod I’ll tell 4 about that one incident with Annie. Anyways.

Agent 2.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“Ouch!” Three hissed, swatting Marie's hand away. Marie sucked her teeth as she tried cleaning the agent's eye.

It wasn’t healing well. The iris was now a shade of blue, no longer its usual bright orange. Marie grabbed another cloth and placed disinfectant onto the rag. Although being a famous pop star she wasn’t planning on choosing that route, Marie wanted to be a doctor but it never happened. Three was aware of Marie's career choice, which is why she came to her for help. The only nurse she’d trust with her life.

But right now this nurse was being annoying.

“Could you stay still?!” Marie gripped Three’s arms. Three shook their head and moved away.

“Marie, it burns!” Three whined

“It’s supposed to dimwit.” Marie rolled her eyes “That’s how you know it’s working. Now stay still.” Marie cleaned the burn on her eye. She carefully dabbed the cloth trying not to cause Three as much pain as she could. The agent groaned in pain.

Marie threw away the infected cloth and grabbed a bucket of fresh ink. The ink swayed in the bucket as Marie moved. She gently washed Three’s face, luckily Three’s suit was ink proof but her face was a different story.

After washing her face thoroughly Three shook off the ink. Marie scrunched her nose as the ink hit her face.

“If you want to ease the pain, put an ice pack, cold compress. Pain meds should also help when you can’t sleep. Also, take a shower you smell like a catfish.” Marie plugged her nose to emphasize her point, Three merely shook her head at her display.

She took a look at the new cabin, she had been here a couple of times but it still felt weird. Looking at DJ Octavios sitting in his globe felt taunting, as if he were saying she did nothing to help, it wasn't her. Part of her couldn’t get over the fact she wasn’t there to stop him. Guilt overtook her at the thought of Callie suffering and she couldn’t help. Instead, another agent did.

Three grimaces at the thought of this so-called ‘Agent 4’. She hadn’t met her yet but she already found her displeasing although Marie seemed quite fond of her…a little too fond.

“What are you thinking about…” Marie dusted off her green kimono, sat down next to Three, and closed her umbrella.

“Your cousin.” Three smirked.

Marie smacked Three’s head, she had known about their ‘fling’ for a while but still hated to hear about it. Marie shook her head at the thought of her cousin. The thoughts formed into sorrow, for both of them.

“She misses you, you know? She actually asked for you last time.” Marie sighed, she rubbed her nose before placing her hand back on her lap. Everything had still felt distant between them, the tension was still there but they were healing.

“I know, but I don’t think it’s wise right now.” Three shook her head

Marie snorted “Why? It’s not like you put the hyposhades on her '' She spared a quick glance at Octavio, who avoided eye contact.

“I didn’t save her either.” Three chuckled dryly “I wasn’t there and nobody told me.” Three turned to Marie “Why didn’t you say anything? We-we still had the communicator on and-and you never said anything.” Three stammered, her emotions getting the best of her. She wrapped her arms together to bring some sort of grounding to herself. An anchor was what she needed but she was scared.

Marie sighed, her eyes drifted to the cherry blossom petals that floated by.

“I didn’t tell you because I knew you were busy.”

Three scoffed, “I told you to call me if anything happened.”

“It wasn’t your job Three.” Marie spat “You’ve helped a lot, it’s okay not to be there for once.”

“But it’s Callie.” Three countered

“She’s not yours Three.” Marie rolled her eyes “You’re not always going to be able to help her.”

Threes ears drooped, it wasn’t a pretty thought. Marie felt sympathy for the squid, she had also felt it when she couldn’t find Callie. They both wanted to help but couldn’t.

Marie put her hand on the agent's shoulder, Three tensed up at the contact and Marie considered taking it back. Three looked away from Marie trying to swallow that dreaded lump. Marie moved her hand down and briefly squeezed her hand, before taking it back.

Three closed her eyes focusing on the quiet of the canyon. Soft rustling in the air, carrying the petals through the currents. Her mind drifted off to different topics trying to forget the previous one.

“I have something to tell you.” Three opened her eyes.

Marie stayed silent allowing Three to keep going.

“Uhm…on the helicopter ride back, gramps- I mean Cuttlefish told me something…and he gave me this.” Three reached into the bag she had brought next to her side. She carefully pulled out the navy blue hat, the captain's hat. Marie looked at the hat and than at the squid.

“He wants me to take over.” Three gave a small smile. Marie gasped.

“Wow…for eel?” Marie asked, she gently took the hat from Three's hands. Three nodded her head in what someone could perceive as excitement but her eyes told differently.

Three placed her hands on top of Maries and pushed the hat on her lap.

“I want you to take over.” Three told Marie, and Marie furrowed her eyebrows.

“What? No. I can’t. He didn’t ask me.” Marie shoved her hat off her lap handing it to Three, who grabbed her hands yet again.

“And I’m asking you” Three interrupted “Listen, Marie, we both know you’d make a better captain. You’re really smart Marie. You’d be perfect for this.” Three insisted

Marie deadpanned “Three I’m a pop star, who happens to have a very busy schedule and with Callie, I have to be there for her. I can’t take another job.”

Three cursed under her breath “You think Callie?-“

“Three no.” Marie glared “Listen Three if cap chose you he chose you for a reason. The difference between me and you is that I have no experience on the battlefield. You know what they say, experience is better than knowing.”

Three sighed, and her leg bounced along with her.

“I just…I don’t really think I’d be the best for the job.” Three started

Marie had to control the urge to slap Three on the head but let her continue anyways.

“I mean maybe once Callie’s better you can take it? I just really don’t think it should be me.” Three scratched her head. Marie tried to think of a way to convince Three, she could be very stubborn when she wanted to be.

A lightbulb lit Marie’s head, she tried her best to hide her smirk.

“You know…maybe you’re right.” Marie looked to see Three’s reaction, her ears perked up “It’s not like you saved Gramps from a wicked blender and helped an innocent octoling or defeat DJ Octavio first.” Three squinted her eyes at the gray-haired girl, what was she playing at?

Marie nodded her head “You’re right, I’ll just” Marie scooped the captain's hat in her hands “Give this to Agent 4.”

Marie fought the urge to snicker at Three’s disgusted look. Three grimaced at the thought of the newbie being captain.

In an act of despair, Three snatched the Captain's hat and placed it on her head “I changed my mind and that was a dirty move, Marie.” Three stood up from the bench, she stretched her arms and legs after sitting for so long.

Marie smirked “It worked didn’t it.” She shrugged

Three sighed “I suppose, for now. Just I’ll give it a try”

“That’s all we’re asking Three” Marie smiled “Or should I say, Captain?” She teased.

Three groaned and walked over to the grate “That’s gonna take some getting used to” She muttered, quickly turning into her squid form and leaving the premises. She often left without excusing herself, Marie had grown accustomed to it. A smelly squid with no manners, how nice.

Marie smiled at the thought of Three being promoted to Captain. She approved of that decision and couldn’t be prouder to see one of her most trusted friends grow into something more.

Marie looked at the book next to her ‘The Agent 4 Factopedia’. The pop star bit her lip as she recalled Three's evident distaste for the new agent, although she hadn't met her she already hated her. Marie sighed.

How was she going to tell her?

Chapter Text

Agent freaking Four.

There are so many words I could use to describe them but I’ll keep it brief. I didn’t like them at first I thought they were a showoff and annoying as hell. I got to know her and realized I was wrong she's so humbly annoying. We get along pretty well now and I do enjoy her company.

The first time we met was extremely awkward and…yikes. I wasn’t pleased but now we laugh about it, except Marie. I do approve of them now but it took me a while. Marie is like a sibling to me so of course, I gave Four a hard time.

A really hard one but it was all out of love.

This is the tale of Four.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three rushed through Inkopolis square. She passed by many vendors who weren't too happy about her pace. The inkling clutched the suitcase containing information Marie would be ecstatic for.

She had gone back to the metro and collected the sanitation goop in vitals. Marie had asked for them and Three had put it off due to being afraid but she finally had gotten it done. With the help of Agent 8 but we don’t talk about that.

Three slid and made a sharp turn, she settled her pace as she made her way through the crowds. She saw the familiar grate and pushed through to get towards it. Many inklings grunted as they were pushed. Three simply muttered a sorry.

She looked at the grate in front of her and dusted off the briefcase, along with her newly made Captain's hat. Cuttlefish had sown it up to fit the inkling. She took a deep breath and plunged through the grate. Entering Octo canyon.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three jumped out of the ink, turned into her standard form, and shook off the ink. She smiled as she looked at the briefcase before looking up at the cabin.

Three froze as her eyes took in the sight before her.

A bright yellow-haired inkling kissing Marie. Both were too engrossed in each other to notice the flabbergasted agent.

Three’s jaw dropped and her grip on the suitcase did as well. The thud of the suitcase attracted the attention of the two aforementioned squids. They both blushed instantly and scooted away from each other.

Three furrowed her eyebrows and took in the appearance of the yellow squid…who was wearing a familiar agent suit. Three gasped as the realization dawned on her.

Agent Fucking Four.

Three readied her fist and stormed towards the inkling who cowardly backed away in fear.

“Yeesh!” Four covered her face

Marie stood up and gripped Three’s hand, keeping her from making any movements.

“Three! Stop!” Marie grunted, the squid had grown a lot stronger than she remembered.

Three huffed “What the shell was that?! Agent 4?! Seriously!!” Three glared at the agent “First Callie now Maire what- trying to get both of them??” Three growled directly at her.

Fours eyes widened “Who- what?! Who said anything about Callie?”

Three flustered “Shut up.”

Marie pushed Three back and used her umbrella to cover her agent. Three huffed and glared at the inkling. Marie retaliated and did the same. They glared at each other before Three backed down.

Marie smirked to herself and closed her umbrella.

“I want an explanation now Marie.” Three crossed her arms, eyeing the yellow inkling in suspicion.

Marie dragged a hand across her forehead “Me and Four are dating.”

Three grimaced “Dating?! Why?!”

“Because we like each other, is there a problem Three?” Marie locked arms with her girlfriend.

Three stumbled over her words and gave up in trying to say anything after the look she received from the pop star. The Captain huffed and handed Marie the suitcase.

“Here’s your stuff I’m leaving.” Three snarled.

As she walked away from the couple, Three made it her goal to prevent them from doing anything. If she couldn’t have anything with Agent 1 why should they? Plus Agent 4 is not to be trusted. She could be using Marie and Three wasn’t going to let that slide.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three eyed the customers as she adjusted her mustache. The first phase of her plan had begun. She changed her tentacle's color to a light purple, something she’d never go for. Her tentacles were tied in a tight bun. It was quite painful but it was her disguise. Along with a bushy mustache because why not?

She swallowed her nerves and made her way toward the table where her targets were seated. She gave her hair the final touches and walked towards them with confidence, posture straight as a line.

Marie laughed at one of her dates' jokes. The sight made Three want to hurl.

“Welcome to Thai Tanic, may I take your order?” Three put on her best French accent.

Marie squinted her eyes at the waiter.

“Do I know you?” She questioned.

“No!” Three yelped, receiving various looks from other diners. She cleared her throat in embarrassment “I mean no sorry.” She looked at Four and smirked to herself “If I did I would never have forgotten you.” She winked at Marie.

Four didn’t seem appreciative of the flirting.

Marie shook her head, she was used to it “We’ll start with drinks.” Four nodded.

“I’ll have water please.” Four asked.

“Same for me thank you,” Marie ordered.

Three nodded and moved out of their way. She hid behind the plant, fortunately, whilst at the table, she managed to sneak a microphone that was picking up their conversation. Three adjusted her earpiece to hear better. They talked mainly about the agency then Four asked about her parents. Three clenched her fist as Marie placed her hand on Fours.

The sight was brutally sickening, two squids in love. Disgusting.

Three quickly grabbed a waiting tray and waltzed into the kitchen picking up water. She balanced them perfectly and walked with ease. This was child's play to Three. She scoffed at the simplicity of it.

Three rushed over to Marie’s table, and her eyes widened. They were going to kiss again.

“Not on my watch…” Three whispered, quickly making her way over there she zoomed with the water on her tray. As soon as she was close enough she ‘tripped’ and a splash was heard.

“Oops.” Three muttered.

Four screamed when the water made contact with her skin.

“Four!!” Marie yelled “Oh my cod!” She touched Fours skin, it was burning.

“Did you use real water?! Are you insane?!” Marie screamed at the waiter. Three smiled sheepishly.

“Whoops.” She chuckled, it wasn't her intention to harm Four…but it worked…ish?

Marie growled and wiped the water off her agent's face. Four hissed in pain.

“I’m sorry Marie- gosh this was supposed to be perfect.” Four frowned.

Three stood up and returned with more napkins to clean up the spilled water. She could feel everyone's disapproving eyes on her.

‘Great.’ she thought, wiping their table.

Three stood up to grab a mop to pick up the spill from the floor, avoiding Marie’s fiery glare.

“No Four it’s okay we could go back to my place if you’d like?” Marie smiled and rubbed the agent's soaked arm trying to ignore the burning pain.

Four grinned “Movie night?” She wiggled her eyebrows

Marie nodded and winked. Three stopped in her tracks with the mop in hand. Four quickly dug through her pockets, pulling out a crisp 20 G, and dragged Marie by the arm. Both left the restaurant with loving smiles on their faces. Three’s grip on the mop tightened making it snap in half. She dropped the piece of wood, leaving it on the floor, and stormed out of the restaurant. Plan failed.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three watched as the popcorn bag spun in circles in the microwave. Today was the NSS Movie night. An event that Pearl demanded to be made for ‘team bonding’. They always held it in Pearl's mansion something about having the biggest screen. Rich people.

The microwave beeped signaling the popcorn was ready. Marie passed by the kitchen grabbing beverages for the team. Three’s plan was now set in motion.

After a failed attempt at ruining their date, Three was beyond frustrated. Ever since that night, their love for each other had only grown stronger. She wanted Marie to see that she was being used but had no evidence to do so. It seemed Marie had caught on to Three’s intentions, she would send dirty glares toward her.

But tonight was perfect, Callie was stuck in traffic so she couldn’t make it. Meaning no distractions. Three grabbed the popcorn placed it in a bowl and headed for the living room. Pearl and Marina were snuggled up next to each other. Whilst the Captain was in squid form asleep on Eight's lap. Three smiled at the sight but grimaced at Four. Despite that, she chose to sit next to her, leaving no space for Marie.

Marie came out of the kitchen with drinks in her hand, her eyes pierced at Three. She was sitting in her spot. The pop star pursed her lips and handed everyone their own sodas. Three smirked when the pop star sat next to her. She knew Marie, Marie was never one to be welcoming toward PDA. She wanted to snuggle secretly with her girlfriend but now that wasn't a choice.

“Yo, we ready?” Marie glared at the screen, and Pearl slowly turned her head away “Okaayyy…I’ll just press play.”

Three relaxed on the couch as the movie played. It was an action movie of some sort. Three didn’t pay much attention. She placed her hands on the back of her head smirking in satisfaction. Marie scooted a little closer to Three, who didn’t mind it at first till she felt Marie’s hand on her chin.

She roughly but slowly tugged her down “I know what you’re doing Astrid.” Marie whispered in her ear, letting her go. Marie smirked and relaxed on the couch. Meanwhile, Three was now a bit more nervous. She shook her head and focused back on the movie or tried to. They were halfway in when the front door opened, revealing Three’s greatest weakness.

“Heyo!!!” Callie waved, and everyone greeted her with smiles minus Three. Her plan was about to crumble “I got out of traffic, cod it was such a pain.” She hung her coat and walked toward the common room. Callie came behind the couch Three was seated on. Three gulped and tried to calm her nerves.

Callie wrapped her arms around Three’s shoulders and leaned down. “I missed you,” she whispered, her breathy voice swarming butterflies in Three’s stomach. She gave Three a soft long peck on the cheek. Marie snickered and Four contained herself, lest her get her ass kicked by an angry gay squid.

Callie smirked at Three’s reaction “I’m very tired…I’ll be on that couch by myself…you’re welcome to join me.” She rubbed Three’s shoulders and walked towards the other couch acting as if nothing happened.

Three took a deep breath “I hate you.” She whispered to Marie, who smirked in response. Three was far too weak and left the couch to join Callie. Immediately Marie latched onto her girlfriend and stuck her tongue out at Three.

She was far too flustered to care though. She shook her head as Callie smiled widely and wrapped herself around her.

Another plan was foiled.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“Cod you’re so annoying!”

“I’m trying to protect you!” Three reasoned

“I don’t need you to protect me! For cods sake Three I need you to leave!” Marie yelled at the squid, she stormed out of the canyon and into the cabin. Octavio slapped a tentacle over his head.

Marie was sick of Threes bull. She had come into Octo canyon and took over the communication system with Four. She broke it and now Marie couldn’t reach her girlfriend. Three huffed in annoyance but frowned at Marie's choice of words.

She didn’t know why she couldn’t trust Four, in fact, she wanted to but it just- Three didn’t want to let Marie go. Three had seen all of Marie's past relationships. They never treated her right.

Three sat down on the bench with her ears drooped as she recalled Marie’s last relationship.

“Are you sure you’re fine?” Three asked Marie gently.

Marie huffed and threw out various items lying around her apartment. “I’m fine Three, it’s just a breakup.”

“From a 2-year relationship Marie.” Three deadpanned.

Marie shook her head as she reached for the picture frame. She looked at the frame, inside it was a photo of her and a tall blue inkling. Her eyes watered, and she closed them tightly telling herself not to cry, especially not in front of Three.

Marie took a shaky breath and hovered the photo over the trash can. Her feelings got the best of her, she shook till her knees gave out. Three was quick to catch her “Careful.” Three whispered as she gently placed her down. Marie clung to Threes shirt and let out a quiet sob.

“Am I not loveable? Everyone loves Callie, even you do…all my relationships have failed I-I don’t understand…” She whimpered

Threes ears dropped and her hearts broke. Never in her life had she heard her cry in all these years or speak about herself that way. She never wanted to hear it again. Three placed her chin on top of the pop star's head and held her in silence. She made a vow to protect Marie from that day forward.

Agent Four walked in battered in purple ink. The agent jumped at the sight of Three, she was still very much afraid of her. Agent Four shakingly handed Three the mini Zapfish but received no response. Agent Four tilted her head.

“A-Are you okay?” She asked

Three looked up at her “Do you love Marie?” She asked with all seriousness in her tone.

Agent Four was taken by surprise by the question “I uhm well, I want to get to know her first. It’s only been 2 weeks after all…but I do like her, a lot.”

Three stared at the agent, all of Marie’s past relationships said they did. They already loved her before even dating her. “Why?” Three questioned.

Agent Four furrowed her eyebrows “I’m sorry what?”

Three took a deep breath “Why don’t you love her?”

“Because…I- well. I want to take it slow you know and do it right. We just started dating I wouldn’t put that pressure on her nor either of us.” Four explained.

Three had her answer.

She patted the space next to her, Four sat down still slightly hesitant at Three’s unusual behavior. Four held onto the mini Zapfish.

“I’m sorry.” Three muttered under her breath.

“Huh?” Fours eyes widened “Sorry?? For what?”

Three rolled her eyes and placed a fake mustache on her face. Four gasped at the revelation “You were the waiter?!” Four pointed a finger.

Three smiled and took it off “Yes, but…” Three scratched her head “I didn’t approve of you for Marie since she’s a pop star you know?”

Four shook her head “I still find that hard to believe.”

Three squinted her eyes “That you’re dating a pop star…?”

“No, that she is a pop star. I still think she's playing with me.” Four clarified.

Three’s jaw dropped “I- what? The Squid Sisters??? You don’t know who…?”

“Nope! Never heard of them till I joined the NSS.”

“Oh, my cod.” Three facepalmed.

Four shrugged “Yeah I support her ‘career’” Four air quoted the word career “but I really don’t know her, just Marie Cuttlefish.” She smiled.

Threes jaw was still agape, how could a squid be so uncultured? Three forgot about her previous grudges with the squid and dragged her towards the tv.

She sat down on the couch with the remote in her hand “Which songs haven’t you heard?”

Four smiled sheepishly “All of them.”

Three sucked her teeth “It’s time you got cultured.”

Chapter 5: Agent 8

Summary:

okay, Agent 8 is a tough character for me to write just gonna start off with that. This chapter isn't my favorite but eh make do. Only 3 more to go.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

This one…was a difficult one to write. Me and Agent 8 do get along (always treat your fellow agents with respect) it’s just we’re very different.

We’re a different species and she’s far more active than I am. Her outlook on life has always been happier despite the trials she’s gone through her whole life.

Which were a lot.

I always was very skeptical about having an octoling on our side. After fighting them for your whole life you get used to it but from the moment I laid eyes on Eight, I knew she was different she looked lost…and without purpose. Unlike most of the Octolings, I’ve fought in my life.

My opinion on Eight changed even further after a couple of months. The final splatfest.

My account, on Agent 8.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“We’ve got a splatfest coming up quick!” Pearl threw back her arms in excitement

Marina swooned “Splatfest always get my ink pumping! I’ve got to get my gear ready!” She clasped her hands together.

“The splatfest theme is … WHAT?!” Pearl spit out bewildered

Marina gasped “What is it, Pearlie? What’s the theme?! TELL MEEEEE!” She begged

Pearl looked quite nervous, despite the excitement flowing through her veins. Marina noticed it, she tried her best to mask her concerned expression as they were still live.

“The splatfest theme is…”

Music blared as the theme was presented, in bold fonts the screen read:

CHAOS

ORDER

“The Splatocalypse is upon us!” Pearl whimpered

Three shut off the screen. The screen reflected her worry. Marie turned to look at Callie, and Callie back at Marie. They silently expressed concern for each other. Bruises are still left from the last Final Fest. Four was the first to break the silence.

“Well, at least it isn’t Pearl vs Marina…right?” She let out a dry chuckle.

They were all scared.

Eight clutched the squid plushie tightly as she glared at the screen “I don’t love this…” Eight buried her head into the plush, pouting softly.

Four patted Eight's back and stood up “It’s nothing Eight. It’s just a Splatfest…another normal Splatfest.” Four mustered a smile, she grabbed her hat off the coffee table.

Marie raised an eyebrow “Where do you think you’re going?” She questioned her agent.

Four gulped, she pointed at the door with both hands “Out…”

Marie huffed and grabbed her jacket “I’m going with you.” She put her arms through the holes.

Four shook her head “No.”

“Yes.” Marie crossed her arms.

The two continued their bickering and Eight buried her face further into the pillow. Callie’s ears drooped slightly, reminiscing on the past events. Three continued staring blankly at the screen.

What were they to choose?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three was woken up by the sound of a door slamming.

“What…?” She muttered, lifting herself off the mattress. She scratched her head. Grabbing a hoodie Three opened her door.

The hallways were empty as ever. Nobody. She walked toward her roommate's room. Gently opening Four’s door she checked inside. Four was sleeping soundly, half her body sprawled like a starfish. She closed it gently and walked towards Eight’s room.

She peered through the door to find she wasn’t in her bed.

“Eight?” Three whispered, she entered the room closing the door behind her. She picked up a familiar plushie, Eight’s favorite plushie: A blue squid. She smiled and placed it on her bed. Three continued walking around the room. Her ears perked when she heard Pearl’s voice. She walked towards the side of Eight’s bed, a dimly lit blanket covering the octopus.

Three lifted the blanket off her face, startling the Octoling and causing her to drop the phone. Eight fumbled with it before pausing the video. It was the Final Fest video, Three’s hearts dropped at the sight. Eight had been crying, her round ears dropped in shame.

Three quickly sat down and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.

“Hey, hey. I’m not mad at you, it’s okay.” Three reassured the octoling.

Eight let out a sad sigh and placed her head on Three’s shoulder. A blush overtook Three’s face, she was thankful it was dark.

“Pearl and Marina were arguing…and so were Callie and Marie.” Eight whimpered “They’re all fighting over it…even Four and Marie.” Eight wiped her eye. The squid's eyes widened in shock, she never knew they had been fighting. It would explain why Marie hadn’t visited Four.

Three opened her mouth to speak but Eight cut her off “I don’t know what to do…” She placed her head in her hands, sniffles coming out of the squid.

Three pulled Eight to her side “It’s okay Eight, you don’t have to choose…”

“I already chose!” Eight yelled at the squid, she stared at her. Three gripped the blanket, she had never raised her voice. It wasn’t something Three ever wanted to hear.

Eight laughed dryly “I already chose Three. Order.” Eight pursed her lips “Ever since I was a little Octo, I’ve wanted peace. You can’t have peace without order.” Her eyes watered.

“You chose it too didn’t you?”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three wiped away the crust from her eyes, dipping her spoon back into the cereal. It was cold, it was silent, and it was very displeasing to Three.

Ever since that night, there had been no sleep, for anyone.

Half of the NSS was split up. Like a boy band, they were torn by their own decisions. Pearl had reassured everyone that it was just for the camera, but when they saw Marina wasn’t by her side they came up with their own conclusions.

Relationships were faltering, Three took a glance at the heartbroken Four, lying on the floor watching the fan spin on the ceiling.

Three dropped her spoon and let it sink in the cereal. She sucked in a breath and held her head in her hands. Even Eight had left, staying with Pearl and Marina instead trying to help them overcome this event. She cared for them dearly, and it pained her to see them bicker, so she left Three and Four to survive on their own.

Which they were doing poorly at.

Four walked over to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of matcha tea, she took a chug out of it before staring at the bottle. Four choked on a sob as she stared at the milk tea.

“Marie loves milk tea” Four touched the glass gently, tears spilling down her cheeks. She drank the rest of the tea. The yellow inkling turned to Three, who was staring at her with baggy eyes.

“Life is like a bottle of milk tea.” Four sniffed “It’s amazing till you finish it, then you have a bottle with no purpose.” The agent cried throwing the bottle at the floor. The agent ran away to her room, Three stared at the broken shard glasses on the floor.

They were screwed.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

When the Final Fest finally arrived, Inklings and Octolings were overjoyed. Even Three had to admit she was quite excited, she loved Splatfests, they reminded her of her younger days. She looked at Four who was wearing a fish helmet. She didn’t look so happy. Despite them being on opposite sides they still refused to leave each other.

Bros before Splatfests that play out the fate of the world.

Four tensed up when she saw the rest of the NSS. Three straightened her posture as they came towards them. Most of them covered in silver, Callie in gold.

Callie and Four smiled sadly at each other.

Eight fiddled with her fingers as Three stared at her.

Four was pulled aside by Marie and the others talked amongst themselves. It was just Eight and Three.

Three looked at Eight, she looked stunning in silver.

Eight lifted the sunglasses off her head “Three, we’re both in order.” She smiled.

Three nodded confused about where she was going.

Eight frowned and threw herself at the squid. Three steadied herself, not prepared for the impact.

Eight let tears escape her eyes “I’m sorry for leaving you and Four…I missed you both.” She lifted her head from Three's chest. They looked each other in the eye. There were thousands of cephalopods in the square but the only one Three saw was the Octoling in front of her.

“But most of all Three…I missed you.” Eight confessed.

Three blushed a bright hue, her hands fiddling with the back of Eights' shirt.

“Did you miss me too Three?” She asked, playing with the back of her tentacles. She patiently waited for her answer.

The squid stood frozen in place. She stared at the octoling in front of her. Something wasn’t…right. The longer she stared the more her hearts raced. She’d never felt this feeling before except with Callie…Callie.

The squid she had a thing for.

Three gulped at the realization. Her mind denied it straight away.

Eight tilted her head but nevertheless smiled at her friend. She gave Three a loving peck on the cheek, lingering there for a moment before pulling away.

“It’s okay, let’s go win this.” Eight smirked “Four is going down.” She whispered, Three couldn’t help but snicker, she allowed Eight to drag her by the hand.

She caught a glimpse of Pearl and Marina sharing a hug, Marie and Callie holding hands, and Four giving her a thumbs up.

They were going to be okay. The longer she stared the more she believed it. Her gaze turned back to the idols dancing before drifting at Eight, who had a smile brighter than the sun.

As she stared at the Octoling and her Squid partner she couldn’t help but feel a wave of calm. Eight squeezed her hand and Three smiled.

Things were going to be okay, maybe better. Three couldn’t wait.

Chapter 6: Agent 3 + Lil Buddy

Summary:

I really enjoyed writing this chapter, it was a long one

Chapter Text

Agent 3, my successor, my protégé, and my friend. I’ve known them for a while and at first, I was slightly bitter at the agent.

It was hard giving up my former title, being promoted to something more…it felt wrong. When everyone adapted to this new Three, I felt jealous.

It was my title, one I wasn’t ready to give up, I still have trouble doing so. Although I’ve grown quite attached to this squid in the past few days. I like to tease her, I call them Fuzzball most of the time. Due to how many times they’ve turned into Fuzz.

Not to mention her little sidekick Lil Buddy. He’s a bit…much at times but I adore them bo-

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“H-Hey!” Captain Astrid gasped as the smallfry jumped onto her lap, it wrinkled her journal. Astrid grabbed the smallfry and placed it on the seat next to her, letting out a sigh of relief when she saw none of the pages were damaged too badly.

She turned to the smallfry and then lifted her head to look at the agent who was storming off elsewhere. The Captain tilted her head.

“What’s up with her…?” Astrid turned to the smallfry in question, he panted at her both his eyes looking in different directions. His eyes freaked Astrid out slightly.

Buddy tilted his head back at the squid, Astrid rolled her eyes “Thanks for the help.” She shut her journal and placed it safely on the bench.

She grabbed her cane and walked towards the training area, assuming that was where her agent would be. Astrid glared at Lil Buddy and pointed a finger at him.

“I’ll be back, don’t touch that.” She warned, Lil Buddy stuck his tongue out in response, his eyes drifting.

Astrid cringed, “Yeah okay.” She patted his head and continued walking.

Lil Buddy was an interesting specimen, Salmonids weren’t very smart creatures at times and their only goal was to harm inklings. Astrid had read something about them longing for death but she couldn’t quite remember.

Although Buddy seemed to differ, he had a mind of his own and was very smart.

Astrid limped towards the training room, a room the squid sisters had discovered and remade. From the outside, Astrid could hear the dummies being splatted. The door opened, it was an automatic one. Revealing Astrid’s presence.

The agent lowered her gun, and the last splat bomb went off, hitting the Captain in the face.

Astrid closed her eyes and wiped off the yellow ink.

“Sorry…” Agent 3 bit her lip.

Astrid nodded her head and leaned back on the wall. She looked at the squid before her. If those damn dummies weren’t inflatable Agent 3 would’ve finished them off permanently.

“So…what’s up? I may not be as fresh as I used to be so enlighten me?” Astrid smiled, the agent merely huffed and took off her earphones. She took a seat next to her captain.

“I lost my X rank.” The squid looked down in shame.

Astrid frowned, she had worked so hard to earn that rank. They still remembered how excited their agent was after achieving it.

“Was Four on your team?” Astrid sneered, trying to lighten the mood. Which didn’t go the way planned, Agent 3’s ears drooped at the thought of her fellow co-worker.

“Now I won’t be able to play with them.” She frowned, and Astrid mentally cursed herself. Out of all the things. The Captain sighed before taking a seat next to her agent. Astrid hit her shoulder gently “What mode was it?” She asked curiously.

Agent 3 huffed “Stupid…Clam Blitz.”

Astrid snickered “Of course, it’s Clam Blitz.” The Captain scratched her chin “You know, back in my day we used to have individual ranks for each mode..don’t know why that changed.”

The squid rolled her eyes “We’re almost the same age.” She pointed out, Astrid straightened her posture “Nope, you’re still 3 years apart from me.” Astrid pointed at herself “Making me wiser, and thus I say they should’ve kept it the same way, Lex.”

Lex shrugged “It makes it easier.” She said, causing Astrid to scoff.

Astrid stood up grabbed her cane, she walked towards the middle of the room, gesturing for Lex to come closer.

The Agent followed with hesitation, Astrid placed a hand on her shoulder “I’ll teach you some tricks, I used to use these all the time. Grab a weapon.” Astrid stretched out her hand.

They spent restless hours training together, occasionally goofing off. Astrid smiled as her Agent learned her tricks, she remembered playing turf wars, carrying the rainmaker, and having fun. A faint sadness passed by her, she missed those times. Even when Four dragged her away to play them.

Astrid silently wished she had listened to the Agent more and had loosened up. It was too late for that, but it wasn’t too late for Lex. And Astrid was going to make sure of that.

“Okay well, I’m going to head off now.” Lex turned around smiling at her Captain.

Astrid frowned and looked at her watch “Already?” Lex nodded, exiting the building “Lil Buddy must be hungry by now.”

Astrid and Lex walked together towards the makeshift camp. Lil Buddy sat waiting, both of his eyes drifting before connecting to his owner. Lex smiled widely and held her arms open, prodding Buddy to jump in them.

The squid smiled at the pair, their friendship was unusual but it worked. At first, Astrid found it weird how they developed a close friendship when all Lex did was throw the smallfry, but she soon understood. Plus Astrid sometimes did the same to Four. The best friendships involve throwing, wise words to keep in mind.

Lex giggled as the smallfry squirmed around her, before burying itself back in the pouch. Buddy stuck his tongue out once again and waved at the Captain.

“Bye.” Astrid waved, and Lex waved back as well heading towards the grate.

The Captain's eyes widened “Wait!” She yelled, stopping the agent in her tracks. She tilted her head curiously watching as Astrid dug through looking for something.

“Gosh, where’d I put it…-OH! Here you are…” She mumbled, picking up a box.

Astrid flipped the lid open and smiled at the contaminants. Astrid handed the box to Lex.

“Here, I wanted you to have this.” Astrid pushed the box, folding her hands together.

Agent 3 stared at her boss confused “What is it?” She went to open the lid but a firm hand stopped her. Astrid shrugged “Open it later” She patted her shoulder, walking back to the cabin. Leaving the squid confused, Lil Buddy stared at the box and then licked her ear.

“Eugh! Okay!” Lex rolled her eyes walking towards the grate again, missing the smile Astrid sent her way.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Lil Buddy pushed the box towards their living room, Agent 3 preoccupied with the new video game she got didn’t notice his movement.

Lil Buddy pushed the box further into the room, whining to attract Lex's attention. The agent bit her lip in concentration, not paying attention to her friend. The smallfry huffed and barked.

Lex pursed her lips, fingers moving rapidly as she tried to get past the level. It was the final level, full focus. She had forgotten about the box as soon as she laid eyes on her control. Lil Buddy on the other hand was restless, he smelled something in it. Something special.

Lil Buddy soon gave up on pushing the box, he was too small for the job. He waddled over to the living room, bitting and running off with the remote. Lex gasped as her character died.

“Buddy?!” She screamed, the smallfry waddled faster, his owner fresh on his trail. He jumped onto the box but didn’t make it far, Lex had caught him.

Turning him around Lex stared at her smallfry in disbelief. She cradled him and tried pulling the remote from his mouth.

“Give me!” Lex growled, and the smallfry snorted a ‘no’ in response. Shaking its head viciously.

Lex grabbed the remote smirking to herself.

“Ow!” She hissed, ink coming out of her now-bitten finger. She glared at the smallfry, who continued walking away.

He jumped up and down next to the box.

Lex tilted her head, she stared at the box in confusion.

The smallfry squinted his eyes and banged his head against the cardboard. The agent received the message and with a roll of her eyes sauntered over “You could’ve just said something.” She muttered, ignoring the glare from the salmon.

She kneeled down and gently opened the box. Inside the box were cans...? And a neatly folded tablecloth? She furrowed her eyebrows and took the stuff out. Lil Buddy smelled the cloth, nuzzling his nose inside it he found a letter. Lex scratched her head as Lil Buddy dropped the letter on her lap. Tearing it carefully, Lex read it.

Agent 3,

I’ve gifted you some old items I thought you might enjoy. Inside this package are 2 things, each very important to me. Please take care of these as they were mine once before. As you can see, there are a bunch of cans. These aren’t normal cans, they’re the old specials. The ones I once played with.

She grabbed the cans, fiddling with them.

You’ll find specials such as the Killer Wail, Bubbler, Kraken, and my personal favorite Inkstrike. Only use these in an emergency, they aren’t produced anymore but I’m working with Sheldon to restore some back for the NSS only. These are illegal, so I better not see you on the news.

The agent rolled her eyes and looked at the next item.

And the last item.

I am no longer in need of this item. I’m no agent anymore, my days are finished. So I gift you this, something significant to me. It was a gift from Agent 1 that I now gift to you.

Agent 3 opened the cloth.

My cape.

Lex gasped softly, her eyes welling up slightly. The Captain's very own cape. The smallfry hummed in delight, jumping for joy. Lex set the cape down gently and read the final words of the letter.

I hope you take good care of these for me, Agent 3. I also hope you visit more often, maybe you could teach me to play some more ranked? Or that dreaded Clam Blitz you’re always talking about. Either way, I can’t wait. Thank you for everything Fuzzball, and for giving us a chance.

P.S: I made one for Agent 3 ½ too.

From your boss,

  Astrid Cuttlefish.

Lex reached inside the box, finding a tiny sown cape with the ‘½‘ sign on it. She chuckled. Lex folded the letter, placing the cans back in the box. She stared at the Inkzooka spinning it around. She stuffed it in her pocket, keeping it with her for emergencies, placing the others under her bed.

She grabbed the cape and tied it around, struggling with it for a few but she managed. Lex sighed, looking at herself in the mirror.

She turned and gave it a spin.

“What do you think?” Lex asked her smallfry

The smallfry gave no response but lifted up his tiny flipper to say ‘thumbs up'. Lex smiled and picked up the smallfry. She grabbed his cape and tied it around him too. The smallfry spun in delight.

The squid smiled, striking a pose with the smallfry.

They both squealed in delight together and messed around some more. All and all by the end of it Agent 3 was no longer bothered by losing her rank. She might’ve lost her status, but not her friends.

Notes:

Lil buddy is now known as Agent 3 ½ because he's the half of Agent 3.

yes my agent 3 is called Lex although her full name is Lexington (she doesn't like her full name)

Astrid smirked to herself as Marie flipped through her journal pages. Marie furrowed her eyebrows as she read the pages.

“A historical documentation.” Marie raised her eye, closing the book shut. She smirked at her friend, confusing the squid.

“Yes precisely” Astrid stood smug.

“Oh…well I didn’t realize historical documentations had lists of Callie’s dislikes and likes…” Marie smirked, flipping the book back open “And are those hearts I see around a certain agent's name??”

Astrid snatched the book from Marie, blushing a bright orange.

“Shut up.” She huffed, clutching the book tighter.

Marie snickered, she crossed her arms, and motioned to the book “I’m really proud of you Ash, you managed to write your first journal of many to come. Although you left one-page blank at the end…” Marie pointed out “Either way, good job.” The pop star smiled at her friend, patting her shoulder as she walked away.

Astrid smiled, feeling extra proud of herself.

“Wait- what do you mean the  first journal?!”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Astrid sat on her chair admiring the view. The trees moved beautifully with the chilled air. The team had spent a Saturday afternoon planting trees together, the best decision they ever made according to Cuttlefish. They were spruce trees, ones made for this environment.

Her legs swung in sync with the tree, out of all of them Astrid had a favorite for one. She called it Sango, after her DJ name. She enjoyed that tree, it was a special one.

Her thoughts were cut short once she heard familiar voices, Callie and Agent 3. They were getting along, considering Callie was always there for the Agent in every area. Agent 3 had taken a liking to the pop star and so had she. They were best of friends, although they were having a heated discussion by the looks of it.

The ex-agent smiled at her friends.

Marie opened the door with a huff, closing it with her foot. She carried an old book and a camera. Taking a seat next to Astrid she flipped through the pages.

Astrid raised her eyebrow “What’s that?” She motioned her head towards the book.

Its pages were wrinkled and some even ripped. The language was written in ancient Inklish. Flipping to the last page, Marie presented the Captain with the last page.

Placing it gently in her lap, Astrid held the book as she looked at the picture. It was a picture of the old NSS, with Captain Cuttlefish, a couple of inklings Astrid didn’t recognize, and Ammoses Shellendorf.

The squid smiled fondly at the photo. She pursed her lips in thought.

“Maybe we should do that.”

“Do what?” Marie tilted her head.

Astrid pointed at the photo “Take a new photo, you know. Since this one’s outdated. Just for the future members…” She blushed.

Marie smiled and called the other agents over. Although half of the members were gone, they had photos of them. Astrid wanted one of the new team.

Marie had similar ideas.

Callie adjusted the camera making sure they’d all be seen. With one final move, the idol tapped the screen.

She ran towards Marie and hugged her arm, smiling brightly. Captain cuttlefish lifted his slim tentacle.

Astrid wrapped her arm around the new agent's shoulder causing them to scoff. Astrid smirked and threw up a peace sign, Agent 3 opting for rock.

Flash

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Dimly lit candles crackled softly in the cabin. A soft breeze blew by as the nightfall overcame the sky. It was calm, at ease like a deep river.

Astrid sat at her desk, flipping through the pages of her journal. Using the candle's light she read through it. The more she read the more she realized maybe she did put her feelings into it.

But was that so bad?

The captain loved her agents.

They weren’t just coworkers.

They were home.

A family.

Astrid smiled at the thought, of a stable family. She looked at the couch behind her. All inklings curled together, sleeping peacefully.

She continued flipping, till she reached the last page. Blank. She stared at the white paper and then back at the ancient book Marie had shown her.

The captain quickly opened her desk drawer. Shoving each item till she found the one she wanted.

Tape.

She grabbed four pieces and reached for a picture. Sticking the picture to the page, tape on each corner.

Astrid grabbed another photo. Placed more tape and admired it. It wasn’t finished, not yet.

Three more photos. She cut up more tape sticking the photos near the first.

She pushed the chair back and gently grasped the book. Grabbing a pen she signed it, and placed it down once again.

She smiled at the sight.

Now it was finished.

The inkling stood up in satisfaction, leaving the room. Leaving the book wide open.

The book read:

NSS Family 2022

Inside it showed five images. The photo they took together, and individual photos of the other members who weren’t present. Smiles were each painted on their faces. Deep Cut presenting their respective poses, Pearl holding a microphone whilst Marina admired her, Agent 8 playing video games, and Agent 4 in the middle of scarfing down a seanwich.

Each photo wasn’t perfect, but that’s what made it special. Pop Stars, Organizations, and Families aren’t perfect. They’re far from it.

They each have their ups and downs but in the end, what truly matters is the people you chose to spend your life with because those people will be by your side when others can’t be.

And Astrid thinks that’s something worth living for.
