Safe Place

Summary:

Patton was going over to Virgil's house for the first time. This was a huge deal! Virgil didn't didn't anyone over often since their house was their safe place— totally understandable, by the way— and Patton wanted to make sure they didn't regret it! That might be a little easier than he expected, though.

Work Text:

Patton loved his soulmate item.

It was a small storm cloud bracelet charm and when five year old Patton had gotten it, he was ecstatic. He immediately made a messy little bracelet to put the charm on, complete with beads in his favorite colors— the rainbow— and some heart shaped charms, as well.

As he got older, he kept remaking the bracelet, both because he liked it and wanted to make sure he could continue to wear it which meant sizing it up as he grew up, and also so the string would be less likely to break randomly in public. It would, pun unintended but very much welcomed, break his heart to lose the storm cloud charm, mostly because it was his one tie to his soulmate, but also because he just.. liked how it looked. He enjoyed wearing the bracelet.

He hummed to himself as he slowly left that train of thought and approached the door to his friend's house. He and Virgil had been friends for a few months now after getting paired up on a project together, and though they'd hung out numerous times at Patton's house, this was the first time they were hanging out at Virgil's. Virgil had explained that they didn't invite anyone over often since their house is their safe place and having other people over was inviting stress into that. Patton understood and respected that, and hadn't asked about coming over since.

Then, a few days ago, Virgil invited him over to hang out that weekend— aka today— and Patton almost cried on the spot with joy. Virgil trusted him so much to invite him over, and he was gonna make sure they didnt regret that! He was gonna be so polite and kind and not overimpose or intrude too much and make today the perfect hang out. He was still gonna be himself, just.. probably toned down a little bit because he was often times overwhelming to be around.

He knocked on the front door, taking a step back and rocking on his feet a bit as he waited patiently for the door to open. A moment later, Virgil opened the door, a soft smile on their face. Patton smiled brightly.

"Virgil! Hi!" He said cheerfully. "Thanks for inviting me over."

"Hey, Pat. No problem, come on in." Virgil said, stepping aside. Patton happily stepped past them and into the house, Virgil shutting the door behind him. Patton noticed the shoes by the door and made quick work of taking his own off.

"So! Did you want to do anything specific or did you just wanna be in the same space together?" Patton asked when he finished taking off his shoes, tilting his head a bit at Virgil.

"Uh, well, I kinda wanted to watch a movie or two, if that's okay?" They responded, and Patton lit up at that. Movies are so fun and so easy to be respectful and polite during!

"I'd love that!" He exclaimed excitedly, glad that Virgil seemed a bit relieved instead of off put by how excited he got. They lead Patton to their room, apologizing on the way for the mess, which Patton quickly reassured would be fine. They'd seen Patton's messy room, he could handle theirs.

They quickly settled sitting next to each other on Virgil's bed, turning on Teen Beach Movie because they decided a live action movie would be better than an animated movie today. They happily watched the movie, Patton holding back most of his random thoughts because talking during a movie is something most people considered rude and annoying.

After a bit, Virgil leaned off their bed and grabbed two stuffed animals, raising an eyebrow at Patton to silently ask if he wanted one, which Patton nodded excitedly at. Virgil held one of them slightly forward, a black cat plush, but as Patton reached for it, the other stuffed animal that Virgil was holding, along with the charm on Patton's bracelet, started glowing.

Patton's eyes widened as he realized what that meant, and saw Virgil mirroring the expression. They were soulmates. Holy shit.

They sat in silence, Patton frozen with his arm extended for a few moments before pulling it back to his chest causing the glowing to subside since the objects were no longer near each other. Patton took in the appearance of the stuffed animal, a white with brown patches dog plush that had a bright blue collar around it's neck. It looked well loved, which made Patton's heart swell and also made him feel a bit relieved that Virgil hopefully wouldn't find it weird that Patton kept his soulmate item on a bracelet he wore literally every day.

"So," Virgil said, finally breaking the silence. "Not a bad first visit to my house, I guess." They said, half smiling, but clearly very anxious just underneath it. Patton giggled and nodded, watching the relief wash over Virgil at his response.

"I'd say it definitely went better than expected."
