Chapter 1: Jack POV, Pre-Canon, Crying. For the day 2 prompt: Isolation

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: day 2: isolation

Chapter Text

Jack dropped to the ground before the door slammed shut. Tears welled in his eyes and he did his best to keep them at bay.

They'd lost .

The cloying feel of failure curled up in his stomach, spread out through his chest, and wrapped itself around his throat. He thought he was better, thought college would be better. He saw the way the seniors looked at him, expecting the guy who excelled in the Q. He wanted to prove he could do this and instead he failed.

At least he could cry in this loading dock, away from prying eyes.

Chapter 2: day 3: fall

Summary:

POV Bitty, Pre-Canon/Year 1

Chapter Text

Learning to skate meant a lot of falling. Up, down, up, down, Eric felt he made no progress during his lessons. When he finally mastered skating it was onto jumps and falling all over again. His body was constantly sore and he was well acquainted with the cold wet surface of the ice.

Hockey was supposed to be different, and it was. Eric felt like he got the joy of the ice back. Which made it all the more devastating as his body hit the ice when he saw someone coming for him.

Guess, it was back to square one.

Chapter 3: day 6: stitches

Summary:

Jack POV, Hockey-related injuries, Year 3 #6: PBJ

Chapter Text

Jack saw the puck in time to know it was going to hurt. Pain radiated throughout his jaw. He was ushered off the rink, a towel pressed to his face.

The doctors assessed him and rubbed a numbing agent on the area.

"You’ll feel it but it shouldn’t hurt. If it does let us know,” one of them said.

Jack averted his gaze, and focused on the ceiling as he felt the tug when the needle went through skin. Methodical, it would be soothing if it wasn't his face they were putting back together. This wouldn’t be the last time.

Chapter 4: day 8: shivering

Summary:

Bitty POV, Year One

Chapter Text

The ice was cold beneath Eric but he didn’t want to get up. More accurately, he could not get up. The ground was safe. He was already there, no one could push him or make him fall. He wanted to get up, show his teammates that he was fine. A shiver ran through him as Ransom and Holster gently scooted him to the boards and sat him up. He knew he was safe, but that didn’t stop the goosebumps running along his body as he shivered so hard he shook.

He wanted it to stop but he didn’t know how.

Chapter 5: day 9: fever

Summary:

Ransom POV, can be read as either Ransom/Holster or Ransom & Holster

Chapter Text

“How’s he doing?”

“He still has a fever and it’s been a few hours since he last woke up. One of us will have to wake him up soon to take his meds.”

Ransom groaned as he slowly opened his eyes, everything was still blurry, but he could make out Holster and Bitty.

“How you feeling?” Holster asked.

Ransom opened his mouth, lips cracked and tongue tacky. “Like I was run over by a truck.”

Holster placed a hand on his leg. “Bitty made some soup and there’s some meds you can take. Just focus on resting right now, okay?”

Chapter 6: day 15: trembling

Summary:

Ransom POV

Chapter Text

Ransom trembled as he hid under the table. The worst part about coral reef mode was noticing when he was tipping into it. He knew what to do once it started, but it was so hard to fully divert it. Part of him wanted to ride it out, but also wanted to cut it off at the start.

Which left him here. Under the table once again. He just needed to get up, grab his flashcards and then he could return to the safety of the table. His wobbly limbs refused to obey. Guess he was staying under the table.

Chapter 7: day 17: "it's just a scratch"

Summary:

Nursey POV, Dex/Nursey, Post-Canon, mention of blood

Chapter Text

“It’s just a scratch.”

Dex leveled a look at Nursey that would put even Bitty to shame.

“Well, it’s not like I had to go to the hospital.”

“You’re still bleeding!”

Nursey glanced down at his hand, the slow trail of blood from the juncture of his thumb and forefinger all the way to his wrist. “We can patch it.”

Dex sighed. “Or you could just let me handle this.”

“Will, it’s my house too, I want to help.”

“When I said we will put our blood, sweat, and tears into this remodel I didn’t mean right off the bat.”

Chapter 8: day 20: panic attack

Summary:

Jack POV, Pre-Canon

Chapter Text

Jack's chest felt tight, he tried to take a breath but it felt wrong. He'd been sitting on the floor for the past ten minutes and he wanted to breath, he wanted to feel right. But something wasn't right and he didn't know what to do. All he knew was that he'd spent the past week worrying about the game and it was a few hours away and now he was on the floor. He tried to clear his mind, but the more he tried the more it seemed to go nowhere. He tried again to take a deep breath.

Chapter 9: day 23: self-destruction

Summary:

Kent POV, Pre-Canon, mentions of past Pimms

Chapter Text

He knew he was being dramatic when he thought his life was ruined. In his defense, all of the carefully crafted dreams he and Jack had created have come tumbling down. It didn't matter that he was in the NHL now. What was the point of having success if you couldn't share it with the one you love?

Instead, he relished being impulsive and biting, consequences be damned. He ignored the looks, both of concern and scorn. If he wanted to show the world a cool, collected front, but break down in private then that was what he would do.

Chapter 10: day 28: "please stay"

Summary:

Bitty POV, Zimbits, around Year 3/4

Notes:

This is it! Thank you to everyone who has read along and who is reading this now. I've had a lot of fun making these drabbles. If you want to read more Whumptober Lite works check out the series link!

Chapter Text

Eric knew long-distance would be hard. Jack had made it clear what to expect and they had a shared calendar with their schedules mapped out. Still, that did not mean he couldn't get lonely some nights and wish it was easier.

Currently, he stared at Jack, the long expanse of his body, face slack-jaw with sleep, and quietly snoring. An image he wanted to commit to memory. It was only during times like this, late at night with only the moon and stars as witnesses, that he uttered the words "please stay," knowing no one heard the desperate, selfish request.
