Chapter 1. Sam, Bucky & Natasha

Every Saturday morning, Peter Benjamin Parker sneaks out of Avengers tower and heads to Midtown fitness, where he meets Michelle Jones and Cindy Moon for their weekly dance classes, something they’d all done since they were just six years old.
The three of them usually worked with each other on any group dances, unless their instructor directed them to do otherwise. They knew each other well- they go to school together, do decathlon together, and dance together. They had stuck together throughout everything, and knew everything about each other. For example, they knew that Peter was pansexual and genderqueer, using he/they pronouns, they knew MJ was pansexual and nonbinary, using they/them pronouns, and Cindy was a lesbian. They knew that Peter was Spiderman, and they knew that he was adopted by Tony Stark and Steve Rogers after May kicked them out when he came out. They knew that he hadn’t told Tony about their preferred pronouns, because that was what made May kick them out in the first place, paired with being pan and a dancer, she had said he may as well be possessed by the devil. They also knew that Tony, nor any of the other Avengers, knew that Peter danced- in fact, they thought he was the least rhythmic person in existence, because that’s what he led them to believe. He was tall and lanky (Finally hit that growth spurt! Now he and MJ were eye to eye, instead of eye to chin!) and he tended to trip over his own feet a lot. He was a much better liar than people gave them credit for.

After their classes, the three of them usually meet up with the rest of their friend group- the decathlon team. All of them knew about the dancing, and all of them knew about Spiderman, connecting the Washington incident to Peter easily, but swearing to keep it a secret.

Now, to the problem. Peter was currently being tailed by a large metal armed ex assassin, who was one of many very overprotective parental figures (AKA all of the Avengers). He texts Cindy and MJ to let them know what was happening, before stopping abruptly and turning into an alley, waiting for the man to approach. It’s almost immediate. “Where are you going, Peter?” Peter just stares at Bucky with clear irritation. “Meeting my friends, Bucky. Why are you following me?” Bucky shifts, glaring at Peter as he stares at the duffel bag on his shoulder. “You sneak out every Saturday. You tell Tony you go to Ned's house, but you don’t. Spidey isn’t active, and school isn’t on. I want to know where you go.” Peter clenches their jaw, knowing he wouldn’t get away with not telling the man. “Anyone else know what you’re doing?” Bucky nods hesitantly. “Sam and Natasha.” Peter sighs. At least they can keep secrets. “And I assume they’re around here somewhere?” As soon as he says it, two more figures appear behind Bucky, and he doesn’t even hesitate to roll his eyes- they’re all ridiculously overprotective- he’s 17, not 7!

“This will stay between all of us, you hear me?” His voice is steady and serious, unlike their usual playful attitude. He wasn’t risking getting kicked out again. All three nod immediately. His phone is buzzing against his thigh as his friends text him to tell them to hurry up. He gets it over with. “I’m going to dance classes, I have been ever since I was six. I didn’t want anyone to know. I’m not in danger. I’m dancing. Not ballet, sorry, Nat, though I do also do that. Just not in this class. Anyway, I’m running late, can I go now?” The three of them look a mix between disbelieving, concerned, and shocked, so he rolls his eyes again, aware that he was being more snarky than usual, but too mad about not being allowed privacy to care. “Ok, if you won’t say anything, then I’m leaving. Feel free to come with me, but my instructor will kick you out if you speak or interrupt, and I won’t stop her.” He shoves their way past them, listening as they follow behind him and trying not to let his anxiety show, even though their head is a mess of frantic thoughts.

“They’ll tell Tony and he’ll kick me out”

“They’re ok with me being pan, but what if they find out I’m genderqueer, too? They’ll hate me.”

“They’re probably judging me already- I mean, even the gay couples are all super masculine, dancing isn’t. They’ll hate me.”

“Mr Stark might take the suit again.”

He arrives at the studio in record time, aware of Sam’s mildly panting breaths behind him, but ignoring it in favor of entering the building and seeking out his instructor before going to the changing rooms. He tells her that some of his family were pestering him to see him dancing, and insisted on joining them. The woman frowns, but nods, joking with Peter as she does so. “Do they know the choreography for the dance you, Cindy and MJ are performing for the others today? It’s not exactly family friendly, Pete.” Peter sends a sharp grin, ignoring his confused family as he answers. “They insisted, Dee. They’re just getting what they wanted. Anyway, this is the adults class, not the kids class. We’re hardly gonna dance to kids bop, are we?” Dee nods and gestures for the three adults to follow her, listing her rules as she does so, and Peter heads to the changing rooms, where MJ and Cindy were already waiting.

Did he mention that they were performing today? He, MJ, and Cindy were the ‘veterans’ of the class, having been there for eleven years, and every three months, Dee gave them permission to choreograph their next dance, and today was the day they presented it to the rest of the group. It was a weird atmosphere, in that they were the three youngest there, but they had the most experience and the most respect. MJ snaps him out of his shock by flicking his forehead. He frowns, looking up to find the two of them already dressed. MJ in their usual baggy t-shirt and shorts, and Cindy in her sports bra and leggings. The only thing different, was it was all black, for the performance- it made them stand out against the usual bright colors of the class. “Sorry, sorry. I’ll get ready now. Dee knows, anyway.” The two of them frown at him, but say nothing as he strips out of his usual conservative clothing he wore in public and the tower (again, not risking getting kicked out). He pulls on a loose, long sleeved black crop top and some relatively short shorts- two things he usually wears in class and wouldn’t not wear just because they were there, and takes a breath. MJ squeezes his hand with a reassuring smile, and he sends one back. He really needs to get his crush on them under control, because his heart is about to beat out of their chest.

When the three of them walk out of the changing room, the group of students start murmuring to each other, excited to learn a new dance. Peter hears Bucky choke on air on his left, and hears Dee shushing him in the next second, so he doesn’t bother looking over, instead getting in position, and internally regretting agreeing to be in front, but not showing anybody his fear. In this class, he was fearless, and he refused to change that even if they were here. Fuck the consequences.
Peter walks right past his family to tell Dee what song to play, and sees Sam’s eyes widen and Natasha’s eyebrow raise. Yeah- not ballet. Poor Bucky just looks confused.

He gets into position, standing slightly in front of MJ and Cindy and facing the large mirror. He makes eye contact with the two of them and nods to let them know he was ok before taking a breath and looking at Dee, who starts the music

Yeaaaah baby
I like it like that
You gotta believe me when I tell you
I said I like it like that

They start their well practiced routine instantly, and all worries flow out of Peter’s mind as they concentrate on the music and timing. He unconsciously hums the songs as he dances, grinning the entire time, occasionally catching MJ’s eye and sending them a wink- he always was more confident when dancing- like when he was Spidey, too.

When they finish, the three of them cannot hide their grins as the students and teacher start cheering. Sure, they did it every time, out of respect, but they were all really proud of this dance, so it meant more. Even the three suspiciously silent Avengers weren’t enough to kill his mood, especially not when MJ leans on his shoulder, whispering praise in their ear. He turns and matches their energy, until Cindy joins in with a false gag, and both of them grimace, taking a step back. Dee speaks up. “Well done, guys! You really outdid yourselves, I’d say that was on par with your 7/11 performance in the last competition, ey?” The three of them grin- they had won with that performance, so that was a big compliment.

“Ok, everyone split into groups of three and give it your all. We’ll give these three a minute before having them repeat it- god knows they’ll want to record it for their friends anyway, hm?”

Cindy, indignant as ever, protests. “We don’t- well we do, but only ‘cause they make us, Dee! We’re free entertainment for them. Flash especially likes to ogle Peter, ain’t that right, Pete?” Peter chokes on the water they were drinking, turning bright red. Was Flash gay? Yes. Was he nice to Peter now? Yes. Was he now appreciative of his body? Also yes. Had they hooked up a couple of times as friends? Maybe. Did he have a crush on Peter? No, he had made that very clear- he was attracted to Peter, but not interested in dating him. Just hook ups. They were sort of very casually friends with benefits. Peter was very glad for that, he didn't want to date Flash. He wants to date MJ. But… Well, they're terrified.

MJ cuts in before Peter can reply. “Actually, all of them eye up Peter like a piece of meat whenever they’re wearing something other than oversized shit. It’s hilarious, Dee, he turns bright red. Like now!” Peter glares at MJ and Cindy, cackling like witches, and instead looks at Dee to save him. She just grins.

“I actually do need to speak with you, Pete. Come with me. The rest of you, practice practice practice. Peter’s face drops as he follows Dee. He already knows what this is about. He’s so caught up in their thoughts that he doesn’t notice the three Avengers following them.

When they get to her office, he starts speaking before he even sits down. “This is about my membership almost being up, right? May paid for six months, it’s been five and a half. I’ve almost got the money up, Dee. It’s just… hard.” Dee sighs. Peter and her know each other really well, and she really cares about them. She’d let him stay for free if she could, but her boss would kill her. They both know it. “Peter… you still haven’t told me why May stopped paying. I can cover for you for a month, but after that… I’m sorry, I really am. I want you here, you’re one of my most talented students, but I can't help here.” Peter sighs and puts their head in his hands. It’s $500 dollars for six months. “I have $350 saved, I just need a little more time. I- She kicked me out, Dee. Said I may as well be possessed by the devil, ‘cause of my gender and sexuality and stuff, you know? Like, she was alright with me being Pan, but being genderqueer? It was like the ultimate sin.” Dee winces in sympathy, before speaking up hesitantly.

“And your new guardian?”

“Doesn’t know anything about this side of my life. I’m not risking being kicked out again, Dee. I just need to make it to 18, then I can move into the dorms in Columbia, and I can be myself without fear of being homeless. Listen- I’ve been doing odd jobs for Delmar and the Bugle, I can have the 500 gotten to you in… three weeks? Is that- is that ok?” Dee sighs, but nods, opening her mouth to speak, only to be interrupted by a familiar feminine voice speaking up, cutting off all of Peter’s thoughts.

“I’ll pay for h- them? I don’t want you spending your savings on this, Peter.” Dee looks up at the same time Peter freezes as a hand lands on his shoulder. He turns to find Natasha standing behind him with a concerned, but supportive smile. Behind her, Bucky and Sam are standing hand in hand, looking confused and a little red in the face, but with unconditional support and love evident in their eyes. Dee smiles slightly, nodding. “Wonderful! And how do you know Peter?” Nat speaks up, pride and confidence in her tone. “We’re family. It’s clear h-they like this, and they’re very good at it, we’ll all support that.” Dee nods, sending an ecstatic look to Peter, who’s beaming at the easy acceptance shown.

Peter is sent back to class, and later that night, he and the three Avengers have a conversation. He tells them about May, about his pronouns, about his hobby, and they agree not to tell anyone, despite trying to convince them that nobody would care. Logically, he knows that they wouldn’t, but his anxiety tells him otherwise. Now, he has a ballet partner in Nat, too. It all worked out.

2. Clint and Wanda

The next time somebody finds out, it’s Friday’s fault. He’s in the gym with Nat, Clint and Wanda, and Friday interrupts them while he’s sparring with Wanda. “Young boss, you have currently got 78 messages in the Dance GroupChat, 32 from Cindy, and 1 missed call from MJ. Considering MJ never calls, I figured it was important enough to interrupt. Oh- you are currently receiving a call from MJ again, would you like to answer?” Peter, in his panic and thinking something was wrong, immediately says yes.

“MJ, is everything ok?”

“Did you get Dee’s email to us?” Peter pauses. Shit, this is about dance. He knows Wanda won’t care, but will Clint? He’s already on the phone now, it’s not like he can hang up- he’ll just have to hope they can keep their mouths shut. So, with a panicked look at Nat, he replies.

“No, I’ve been training. What is it?” MJ hesitates.

“What type of training? Are you with the Avengers right now? Do you want me to call you back when you’re alone?” God, for someone who says they don’t care, they sure are considerate. One look at Clint and Wanda tells Peter that he won’t be leaving without an interrogation anyway, so he just sighs and sits on the mat.

“I’m with Nat, Wanda and Clint. They’ll just have to keep their mouths shut. Tell me what’s going on, Em.” Two indignant huffs are heard, before Nat tells the two of them to shut up, grabbing Peter’s phone and throwing it to him as MJ replies.

“There’s a competition. Like, a BIG one. She nominated us for it. Me, you and Cindy. It’s sort of like the dance version of America's Got Talent, but the reward is going on a HUGE TV show for a chance to win some cash. Cindy thinks we should do it. I agree with her.” Peter hums, staring down at his phone and reading the details out loud.

“So… individuals up to groups of four can join. OK. So we’d need to do an individual audition and a group audition before we even get in, then there’d be three more tournaments? It says we could end up being split up…?”

“Yeah, if they think we’d do better as a pair or individually, they can split us up. It wouldn’t be during auditions, though. It would be during the first tournament.” Peter nods, despite not being seen.

Holy shit, the reward is going on lip sync battle? Oh my god I’m totally in.” MJ lets out an uncharacteristic whoop before speaking again.

“You know the competition will be on TV, right? Your dads could see it.” Peter turns bright red at MJ referring to Tony and Steve as his dads, but clears his throat and replies, cursing Ned for starting it.

“They literally only use streaming services, they won’t know.”

“And if someone else tells them?” Peter hesitates, glancing at the three others in the room. Their faces say that they won’t say a word.

“I don’t think anyone will say anything. If someone else finds out, I’ll deal with it, but I really do want to do this.” MJ sighs in relief, before speaking again, their voice playful.

Cindy wants to take advantage of you- not in the same way Flash does- Peter is going to fucking murder MJ in cold blood. Three avengers were staring at him with wide eyes (OK, two, but Natasha never shows emotion). He was as red as a tomato.

-She wants to use your gym to practise. I said it might not be possible, since you’re hiding it from your dads. Where DO you hide all your booty shorts, by the way? Surely Friday knows… Also, do you still have Cindy’s eyeshadow? She needs it for Flash’s party on Saturday.  …Are you going? Their voice grows hesitant at the end, and Peter stutters through his reply.

“I have it, I’ll give it to her tomorrow. A-And, uh- yeah, yeah. I am. A-are you?” He ignores their other questions- Yes, Friday knows, but she likes Peter, and she’s not a snitch.

“Mhm. Want to get ready at my place? I can do your makeup. I’ll even wear some, too. It’s just the decathlon team, so don’t worry about that. Also, give Betty back her skirt, we’ll go buy you one after class on Saturday.” Peter blushes again, shrinking in on themself as they glance over to Clint and Wanda, who are looking anywhere but him, furrowing their brows in confusion.

“Y-yeah. That sounds good. Uhm, as for the gym thing, I think… I can probably organise it? Tony and Steve spend Mondays and Wednesdays at the compound for, like, alone time or something, and everyone avoids the gym like the plague once 5pm passes, so I could probably sneak you guys in…” Clint snorts before clearing his throat and examining a spot on the floor, and Nat rolls her eyes at his antics, while Wanda giggles slightly.

“Perfect. We’ll make proper plans tomorrow. I’ll talk to you later, loser.”

“Yeah, I’ll see you tomorrow, Em.”

As soon as they hang up, Clint is turning to him with a curious and hesitant expression. Peter sighs and runs a hand down his face, before glancing at Natasha for help. She takes over, motherly instincts in overdrive, even when it’s her boyfriend asking the questions. “Peter is a dancer. A great one. He is also genderqueer. They go by he/they pronouns. Myself, Sam, Bucky, and now you two know. It’s going to be kept that way, right?” Clint and Wanda nod immediately, and Wanda marches up to Peter with her hands on her hips, but a smile is playing on her lips. “You mean all this time I could have had a fashion buddy? Come on, Peter, we have lots of catching up to do.” Nat and Clint watch as the 23 and 17 year old race out of the room with grins on their faces, before Nat decides to explain everything in more detail to Clint, who, while completely supportive, needs a little more information to fully understand.

3. Thor, Bruce & auditions

That Wednesday, Peter, MJ and Cindy are all sitting in a circle in the centre of the Avengers gym, discussing their plans. Peter is wearing a sheer green crop top and black booty shorts. Cindy is in a blue romper, and MJ is wearing a black sports bra, with yellow shorts. Nobody notices five people watching from the door, followed quickly by two more, who slip in unnoticed by anyone. “Ok, so it’s settled. For our group audition, we’ll do 7/11 again. For my solo, I’ll do Montero, MJ’s doing Boss Bitch, and Cindy’s doing Woman, right? Damn, I feel left out, being the only one not doing Doja Cat.” MJ scoffs.

“Don’t lie, you don't care, you like the idea of giving Satan a lap dance.” Cindy bursts into laughter at that, and Peter plays along. “Oh, please. If I wanted to give the devil a lap dance, all I’d have to do is visit Hell’s Kitchen. Anyway, he’s taken. What d’you wanna practise first?”

“Refresh our memories on 7/11, maybe? Then we’ll work on choreo for our individual stuff together.” Peter and MJ nod, helping each other up as Peter speaks to Friday. “Fri? Can you pull up the video of our last competition? The one when we performed 7/11- we’ll just copy from that.” Friday gives confirmation, and the clearly self recorded (but well done) video pops up on the screen

Peter stands front and centre, with MJ and Cindy on either side of him. As soon as the music starts, they begin. A choked off gasp informs all but the three performers of their new guests, Thor and Bruce. Bruce looks shell shocked as he watches the teens perform what some may consider a risque dance, while Thor beams and bobs his head to the tune, not at all caring- figures, really. Loki is genderfluid and queer, Thor wouldn’t care, and obviously, he enjoys the dancing, even going so far as to attempt to join in, until Bruce snaps out of it and pulls him back with a shake of the head. Thor pouts, but settles for watching the group in awe. They move smoothly and without problem, like a well oiled machine. They finish up, and chat excitedly to each other immediately. After Natasha explains everything to Bruce and Thor and confirms that it won’t be a problem, she starts clapping.

Peter jumps, but doesn’t turn around when she does so, just letting out a loud groan before putting his head in their hands. MJ and Cindy do turn around, grinning like maniacs at their friends' annoyance, and waving at the group. Thor excitedly compliments their routine, and Cindy, being Cindy, offers to teach him. This leads to Peter, MJ, Cindy, Thor, and Wanda all doing the routine as Bucky, Sam, Clint, Bruce, and Natasha all watch in amusement. It’s certainly an odd sight, but it makes them all smile.

The auditions are held three weeks later, conveniently landing the same time the majority of the team are sent to Croatia on a mission. Nat does Peter a huge favour by getting him out of it, leaving just him, Thor and Bruce at home.

The three teens stand together in matching rompers, looking at the surrounding cameras and waiting to be called out for their auditions. Even these were being posted later. Hundreds of people are there when they begin, and they watch as multiple individuals, groups and duos leave with crestfallen expressions on their faces, and very few with smiles.

Finally, they’re called out. There’s an audience behind the four judges, but the light prevents them from seeing any of their faces. There are four judges, and Peter thinks back to what MJ had said about it being a rip off Britain's Got Talent. He can’t help but agree- there’s a judgemental middle aged white guy at the head of the table, a blonde woman with a kind face next to him, a young twenty something year old with cornrows next to her, and an effeminate gay man on the end of the table, beaming at the three of them. The young woman speaks up. “You three are very young. Possibly the youngest in the competition, right, Tom?” The middle aged guy, Tom, apparently, nods. He frowns and hums, clearly playing up for the camera.

“Yes, Lydia. What age are you three?” MJ speaks for them, stepping forward. “We’re all 17, sir.” He frowns again, but the blonde woman next to him rolls her eyes and sends an apologetic look towards them as she speaks. “Come, come. Introduce yourselves, kids.”

They do so with ease, and the man at the end of the table speaks up. “So, no offence, darlings, but we’re only letting in 20 groups and individuals. What makes you guys special? Why should we give you a chance?”  MJ snorts, and both Peter and Cindy share an amused look. They knew what was about to happen- they had discussed it beforehand. It could possibly screw them over, or show their confidence.

“Publicity, honestly. I’ve been watching all of those auditions- we’re the youngest, most diverse group you’ve seen. I’m nonbinary and black, Cindy is Korean and a lesbian, Peter is a genderqueer orphan. We’ve known eachother since we were six years old . We’ve only ever danced with each other. We go to the same school. A school for geniuses, by the way. Peter is an intern at Stark Industries, too, and their bambi eyes make everyone love him.” Peter and Cindy let out small laughs as MJ stares down the silent judges. The youngest woman bursts into laughter, pointing at MJ.

“I like you already! We obviously won’t be showing that, though, so can Bambi come up and give an edited version? Then we’ll move on to your auditions.” Peter grumbles at the nickname, but nods and steps up to the microphone, letting MJ stand behind him, next to Cindy. He quickly tells the story of how they met, before stepping away when they tell them to get into position for their group audition.

Once done, Peter and MJ are sent to wait by the curtains with the hosts, watching as Cindy is interviewed for her individual audition, and holding hands as they do so. Neither notice the hosts making note of it, and having a camera face them as they watch. They ask about friends, school, family, and her other hobbies. The young judge asks Cindy what got her into dancing, and Peter grins at her response.

“I met Peter and MJ. We were six, in Kindergarten, and I was new. I barely knew English, and none of the kids spoke to me. I saw Peter and MJ waltzing in the middle of the schoolyard, without a care in the world, and I tried to ask what they were doing. They were the only two people who took the time to help me understand. Turns out, Peter had seen their aunt and uncle dancing around the kitchen the night before, and was desperately trying to convince Michelle that learning to dance would be fun. He ended up convincing us both to join. It was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I got two best friends out of it.”

Finally, after some follow up questions, Cindy gets to her dance

Woman

Let me be your woman

Woman, Woman, Woman

Peter and MJ beam and shout as she hits every move with practised ease, looking absolutely amazing as she does so. When she finishes, she grins like a madwoman, bouncing on her heels as she walks back to them both, waiting for the judges to call MJ up next. Their questions for MJ are related to Cindy’s, but different.

“So, Cindy told us how you got into dancing, but my question is- how did ballroom dancing turn into hip hop?”

“Oh, it didn’t. Me and Peter did Ballroom dancing for a few years, as well. Cindy hated it, so she stuck with Ballet and Hip hop. Pete and I did all three, but hip hop is just our favourite.”

“And how did your parents feel about the dancing?”

“My dad was really supportive. He always has been. He’s here today, with Cindy’s parents. I don’t talk to my mom.”

“Any romance in the group?” Cindy nudges Peter, and he flushes bright red as he glares at her, still unaware of the cameras on them. “Uh- no. No dating…” Cindy snorts, and Peter elbows her, despite feeling mildly disappointed.

Finally, MJ starts her dance .

Mmm

I ain’t tryna (ah)

I ain’t tryna

I ain’t tryna

Yeah, ain’t tryna be cool like you

Peter is watching MJ intently when the host decides to interview him, asking how he feels about the group, if he’s nervous for his turn, how the relationships developed, and what song he would be dancing to. Peter very half heartedly answers each question, too focused on watching MJ nail every move like a badass. Cindy laughs at them from the background. He pays her no mind.

Lastly, Peter is sent out on stage. The young woman immediately begins the questioning, and Peter tries desperately not to show his grief. “So, tell us about what got you interested in dancing. We know that you encouraged MJ and Cindy, but who encouraged you?”

“My Uncle Ben. He had caught me watching he and Ma- my aunt dancing that night, and came to me later, to ask if I liked dancing. It was shortly after my parents had passed, and he was doing everything he could to make me happy. He showed me how to dance that night, and I think it was the first real smile I had in a long time. So, he signed me up for classes. You know the rest.” The judges all send him sad smiles, and the furthest man continues the questioning.

“Is Ben here tonight?” Peter grimaces, and hears MJ and Cindy start whispering to each other, trying to figure out if they should interrupt or not.

“Ben… passed away when I was fourteen, so, no.” The man winces, and the old white guy takes over.

“Do you mind telling us how?” Peter clears his throat, and glances at his friends. Cindy was angrily explaining it to the two hosts, who looked horrified, and MJ was staring right at him, nodding in encouragement. “Ben was murdered. A mugging gone wrong. I- I was there. Uhm, yeah, so, I’m doing this for him, really.” The blonde woman covers her mouth to stifle a gasp, and Peter has to resist the urge to roll his eyes. He despises pity.

“Your aunt is here, though? Right?” Peter laughs- it’s pained, though. He glances at MJ, who’s laughing too, while Cindy looks pissed on his behalf, and the two hosts look terribly depressed. “No. No, my aunt disowned me when I came out. I came alone.” All four hosts look appropriately upset, and Peter just really hopes they don’t give him pity points. In fact; “Please don’t pity me. And please don’t give me pity points or anything. I want to prove to myself that I can do this without help.” The four smile and nod, asking a final question before gesturing for Peter to get into position. Why this song? They grin a vicious smile as they answer. “My aunt called me the devil. What better song than this?” The four judges laugh, with the youngest muttering about him being petty and how she loves it.

The lights dim, and a red spotlight hits him, just as a pink one had hit Cindy, and a blue one had hit MJ- thank you, Ned, for your lighting design. The music starts, and so does his dance

I caught it bad yesterday

You hit me with a call to your place

Ain’t been out in a while anyway

Was hopin’ I could catch you throwin’

smiles in my face

His body moves on time with the music, and as usual, all of his thoughts flow from his head. He grins at his favourite move, relishing in the gasps he hears from the judges- he’s moving fast and smooth, and it’s impressive- he’s not ashamed to admit it. When he finishes, he fakes being out of breath before rushing back to his friends, where MJ immediately tugs him into a tight hug, and Cindy jumps on his back, laughing. The hosts just watch with soft smiles as MJ speaks. “Your aunt would’ve fucking hated that, Pete! You know what that means?” Cindy cackles from her place on his back as Peter answers. “‘Course I do, Em. It means I was great. And Oh my god, you two! I mean- I saw the performances before, but with the lights and stuff? You both were awesome .” The two of them share the sentiments, waiting for the judges to decide, and chatting with the hosts, who have taken to playfully teasing them about being nerds. Finally, the three of them are called back out, and the old white guy speaks.

“We really enjoyed meeting you three. You’ve brought us an experience we never thought we’d have, and you are incredible dancers. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of placements available-” Peter’s heart drops, and Cindy’s faces fall. MJ is as emotionless as ever, but their hand tightens around his. “-Another group is going to have to go home instead, because there is no way in hell I’m not having you three come back. Congratulations, and we’ll see you in three weeks!” The three of them cheer and jump around, hugging each other and the two hosts, who had come rushing out when it was announced, before being guided back out to the waiting area, where the hosts found their families for them. Peter jolts when a loud, familiar voice shouts out to him, and the cameras immediately turn to him, as do the hosts.

There, towering over Michelle’s dad and Cindy’s parents, is Thor, standing next to Bruce. Neither are wearing disguises. Peter vaguely registers that this will totally end up all over twitter, but his elation at seeing them overrules that, and he runs towards his pseudo uncles. Thor scoops him into a tight hug, swinging him around as though he weighed nothing, and Peter laughs. “Young Peter! I am so very proud of you! We shall celebrate! Bruce has booked a table at a restaurant for everyone!” Peter beams, looking at Bruce, who grins shyly. “I knew you could do it, Pete. Everything’s organised. Your decathlon team are waiting at the restaurant, and we’ll all travel together. I wasn’t going to let you and your friends get away without celebrating!” Peter high fives Thor before hugging Bruce, and he hears MJ and Cindy talking to the hosts.

“He’s Banner and Starks personal intern, and Thor just- really likes him. Yeah- yeah.” He grins. He’s gonna need to figure out how to hide this from Tony, but right now he’s too happy to care.

4. Pepper, Rhodey and Competition 1

“Baby Stark, Ms Potts is requesting your presence in her office immediately.” Peter shoots out of bed with a panicked frown, before shoving on his usual baggy clothes and speeding to the elevator, glad that the Avengers were all still sleeping from the mission the night before. They were also glad for that, because it meant he had time to try and block any news about him off of Tony and Steve’s phones.

He finds both Pepper and Rhodey in her office when he gets down there, sitting around a laptop that showed Peter hugging Thor, and MJ and Cindy explaining that they were a Stark intern. He cringes. They outed himself to them, gave away his close relationship to the Avengers (Even if it was already public knowledge that Peter was a Stark intern), and indirectly told them what happened with May. Rhodey speaks up first. “So… I was just coming to check on Tony after the mission, when Pepper dragged me into her office and showed me this. Why didn’t you tell anyone you were a dancer? Or genderqueer? Or about your aunt?” Peter scratches the back of their neck.

“I didn’t tell anyone I was genderqueer or a dancer because of May. I don’t want to be kicked out or hurt again- and I know that it wouldn’t happen, but I’m just not ready, yet. Everyone who knows found out by accident. I didn’t tell anyone about my aunt because that meant coming out.” Rhodey nods, and Pepper speaks up.

“And… how do you plan to keep this from everyone who doesn’t know?” Peter cringes, but answers hesitantly. “It’s… actually just Tony and Steve who don’t know, but I was kind of hoping Friday would help?”

“Of course, Peter. All media that mentions you will be redirected.” Rhodey blanches at the power he has over Friday, and Pepper just rolls her eyes. “I’m also going to ask Nat to help keep it from them.” Neither adult looks happy at this, but they nod anyway, promising not to tell anyone. They then proceed to commend his dancing, raving about him and his friends performances, and teasing him about his crush on MJ.

Three weeks later, Peter, MJ and Cindy are back on stage, wearing neon green eye makeup, neon green shirts (Peter in a crop top, Cindy in a green bralette, and MJ in a baggy green t-shirt tucked into their pants). They’re all wearing black cargo pants with black shoes and neon laces. Peter stands in between his two friends, and immediately, the conversation begins. “You three are very popular with our viewers, you know that?” They know that. They really know that. The competition's youtube channel is pretty popular, and they had all had to private their social media accounts to stop the constant messages. Luckily, Stark interns are nerds, and couldn’t care less about it, if they even knew, so Peter was safe, for now.

“...Yeah, we noticed.” The young judge laughs at that, before turning to Peter with a teasing lilt to her voice. Her words, or more specifically, her nickname for him, causes both MJ and Cindy to laugh at them as he turns red. “So, Bambi, is Thor here today?” Peter shoves their two friends and stutters through his answer. “Uh, n-no, he’s on Asgard right now. I’m pretty sure it’s just me, unless someone else decides to surprise me.” The woman laughs before moving on to chatting with MJ and Cindy, and Peter silently thanks her for not forcing all of the focus onto him.

They get into formation as soon as the conversation ends, with Peter front and centre. The lights dim, and there's a green tinge colouring the air, as well as fog on the ground. All three had been excited when they were told they could use props and aids to make their performance more dramatic. Finally, the music starts (Bad Guy- Billie Eilish.), and their performance begins .

White shirt now red, my bloody nose

Sleepin’, you’re on your tippy toes

Creepin’ around like no one knows

Think you’re so criminal

They put their full effort into the dance, and it’s clear. By the time they’re finished, collapsed on the ground dramatically, the audience is whooping and cheering, and the hosts are clapping. The judges are silent, thanking them and sending them off to wait for the rest of the 20 groups to do their own performances.

An hour later, everyone is piled onto the stage together. Some are individuals, some are couples, and some, like them, are groups. Peter, MJ and Cindy all hold hands and hold their breaths as a spotlight focuses on each group. The hosts explain what will happen, as the judges chat behind them. “Alright, people. When I call your name, the light above your head will either turn blue, turn green, or go out completely. If it goes out, you’re eliminated, I’m sorry. If its blue, it means that the judges want to make an adjustment to your group before allowing you through, and if it’s green, then you’re going through. Judges, any words?” The blonde woman speaks up.

“Please, don’t feel bad if you don’t get through. Twelve groups are going home, and eight are staying. The odds aren’t in your favour, and it doesn’t mean you’re bad if you’re sent home. Be proud that you’re here in the first place, because that means you’re good. With that, the hosts begin listing groups.

When their group is called, three spotlights have turned green, one has turned blue, and 7 have turned off. They take a breath. “Peter Parker, Michelle Jones, and Cindy Moon. Our youngest competitors. Let’s see if you got through.” There’s nothing for a moment, and Peter imagines they’ll add background music and a dramatic zoom into post production. Then, the light turns blue, and each of them suck in sharp breaths, as the audience ooh and aah.

By the time the rest have been eliminated, there are seven, not eight, groups going through, and two of the groups are blue, not green. The hosts speak again, asking for the two groups to step forward. They do, and Peter realises the other is a group of four. He takes a calming breath, and squeezes his friends hands. “Ok. Group number one, Briana, Terry, Amelia, and Owen. The Judges will speak to you, now.”

“Ok, guys. First off, you’re all great at what you do. However, I believe that one of you is holding everyone else back. I want to see how you work as a trio. So, I’m sorry, Briana, but I’m sending you home. Good luck in your future endeavours.” The girl cries and hugs her group before walking off of the stage with her head down and allowing the second host to guide her out.

Then, the attention is back on Peter and his friends. “Group two. Peter, MJ, and Cindy. Good luck. Judges?”

“This was an incredibly difficult decision to make, you three. It was not made easily, I promise you that. After some deliberation, however, we think that it’s best to split you up-”

“-I still think it’s wrong, they’ve been a group for eleven years!”

“-And I want to see how they work apart. Cindy, I think you have real potential as a solo act. I want you to move forward as one. Is that ok?” Cindy looks at Peter and MJ with tears in her eyes before slowly nodding and walking over to the new green spotlight in between the two groups. Peter and MJ hold each other slightly tighter. There were two options. One- one of them is sent home, or two- they work as a duo, and compete against one of their best friends.

“Peter and Michelle. You two have a very clear and intense chemistry, both on and off screen. We want to see how you work together as a duo. I realise this isn’t exactly a… pleasant change, but give it a chance, hm?” The two of them nod, stealing glances at Cindy, who sends them a reassuring smile

With that, they’re sent away, and immediately, one of the hosts comes to interview them, while the other interviews Cindy. All they want to do is hug Cindy. “How are you two feeling? This is a big change, right?” Peter swallows, turning their head to look for Cindy as MJ replies.

“It sucks, but I get it. I don’t like the idea of going up against Cindy, though.” The man nods, before turning to Peter for his answer.

“It’s… bittersweet. I’m glad we all got through, you know? But like MJ said, I don’t want to go up against one of my best friends.” He nods again, and asks another question.

“Do you think this could affect your friendship with her?” Both of them shake their heads immediately, but neither gets a chance to verbally reply, as suddenly, Cindy is barrelling into the two of them, grabbing them into a tight hug and answering the question without even hearing it. “Oh, this sucks, but we all got through! Oh my god, this is totally gonna encourage the dating rumours, you know that?” Peter blushes bright red, and all three forget the camera is there, relieved to be in their friends' presences. And… Peter really wants the dating rumours to be true, but he’s so scared to ask MJ out.

After their interviews (which Cindy joined), the host guides them back, just like before, and just like before, Cindy’s parents and MJ’s dad are there, waiting. Instead of Thor and Bruce, however, it’s Pepper and Rhodey who are waiting with them, leading, once again, to the cameras turning to him. At least this time he doesn’t have to hide it from Tony- Friday was doing it for him. He hugs them without hesitation, beaming at them.

5. Fury, May and Semi Finals.

“Director Fury, am I necessary for this takedown?” Fury studies Peter intently. Peter stays still, and shows nothing that would give away his reasonings- Nat had taught him that. “You have something more important to you than taking down a Hydra base?” Don’t say it. Don’t say it. Don’t-

Yes , actually." And, he said it.

Fury raises an eyebrow, looking painfully unamused. Steve and Tony send Peter warning looks. He ignores them and continues speaking.

"It’s a small base, sir. A maximum of twenty men will be there, and you prefer to use deadly force on these missions anyway- I’ve made my position on that abundantly clear. I don’t kill. I’ll be an added body, and more work for everyone else. Do you really want to slow them down?” Peter keeps his face decidedly neutral, despite their heart racing at a thousand miles per hour. Nat sends him a proud smirk. Their heart warms.

“And what will you be doing?” Peter knows how to answer this- Fury never questions him when they use this excuse. “Mission with the Defenders, sir. Vigilante stuff, ‘fraid I can’t provide details.” Sure, the defenders will cover for him- they know what he’s actually doing, and that’s competing in the semifinals of his dance competition. It’ll mean that Tony and Steve will try and drag information about his supposed mission from them, but they won’t get anywhere, and if they promise that Jessica Jones will be there, they’ll leave him alone. Peter really doesn’t know why they think she’s a responsible person- she’s an alcoholic who Peter has seen break at least 23 doors.

“...Fine. Parker is out. The rest of you are in. Rhodey will take the kids' place.” Everyone nods immediately, and Peter breathes a sigh of relief. They didn’t want to let MJ down.

The night of the Semi-finals, Peter waves off his pseudo family with a grin, fully aware of Fury’s eyes on him, but ignoring it in favour of texting MJ to let them know that he was on their way. He heads back into the tower and grabs their backpack before exiting the building with a bright grin, hailing a cab, and going to the competition.

Peter and MJ go for more casual looks for this one, wearing black cargo pants and matching blue crop tops. MJ has a leg hooked around Peter’s thigh, and they’re sitting face to face (nose to nose) as they put black glitter on each other's faces. They had met up with Cindy earlier, but were ushered away by one of the judges assistants, who had insisted that they focus on themselves. Cameras were everywhere, and there was always at least one facing the two of them at any given moment. They were well aware of the shipping, but refused to let it affect them, and never acknowledged it, despite their friends teasing them. Peter jumps when he hears an excited squeal, and a very familiar ‘dude!’ to his left. He jerks, looking at MJ, who sends him a soft smile and releases their grip on them so he can stand.

Ned and Betty are there, holding hands and rushing towards them with bright smiles on their faces. Betty lets go of Ned's hand to rush to MJ, and Ned rushes to Peter, doing their handshake before tugging him into a hug. “You’re here! Why are you here? I thought your Lola didn’t want you on camera?” Ned shakes his head with a bright smile as he takes in his surroundings. “My mom’s convinced her! I couldn’t miss my best friend’s Semi Finals! Dude! I’m so proud of you.” Peter’s face softens, and he tugs Ned into another hug, only to have Betty tackle them both to the side and start rambling. “Peter! You and MJ look awesome! We can’t stay, though, we need to visit Cindy, too. Flash and Abe will come see you soon! We love you!” Peter rolls their eyes with a fond smile and waves the two of them off, going back to finishing MJ’s makeup.

Flash blatantly flirts with Peter, and Abe and MJ both fake gag until he stops. Peter is bright red by the end of it, shoving Flash with a false glare, knowing he was only playing around. For some reason, all of Peter’s friends love to make him blush. Eventually, they’re sent away to their seats, and Peter and MJ are sent to prepare themselves. They’re up right after Cindy is, and they have a feeling it’s on purpose. They can see her performance from where they’re waiting, and the hosts are questioning them on their support for her. Both want her to do well, no doubt about it, and she absolutely kills it. Peter and MJ’s cheers are the loudest out of them all, easily heard by Cindy, who almost cries at their support. Even the judges let out small laughs, commenting on their ‘unrelenting loyalty’. Honestly, why anyone thought they would abandon their friend is beyond them.

Eventually, Peter and MJ are called on stage, where the judges chat with them for a bit. “How are you two feeling today? Nervous? Confident?” Peter and MJ share a look- they’re both scared shitless. They work well together, yes, but they’ve always had Cindy as a… buffer, and now that she’s gone, certain… feelings are much harder to ignore. Neither would admit that, though. “Uh, nervous, and just a little weird about everything. Cindy being missing is a big change.” MJ nods along, casually resting their head on Peter's shoulder, something they always do, but likely another thing the viewers would think is cute.

“You know, our viewers love your relationship. Do you have anything to say about that?” MJ grins, and Peter sighs. He knows they’re about to call the creeps out.

“I think… I think that our performance may… encourage some rumours, and I would like to remind certain… creepy people that we’re minors.” Peter nods along, and the two female judges look murderous at the implication that they were receiving inappropriate messages. They were, though- it was gross. And the dance would encourage the dating rumours- but they wouldn’t sacrifice the competition to disperse a few rumours. Peter still very much wished they were true, though.

Finally, they get into their positions and the lights lower, creating a slight pink light around them as haze fills the stage. Music fills the air, and they begin .

Loud whoops are heard when they finish, and it’s clear that it’s Cindy when a familiar laugh follows, and Peter and MJ can’t stop the wide grins from appearing on their faces. The judges compliment them before allowing them to leave, and they run straight into Cindy, who throws herself onto them in a group hug.

The hosts follow as there’s a short break until the final act comes on, and they casually chat with the three teens as they walk back to the waiting areas, when a familiar shrill voice pierces the air, causing Peter to freeze in his spot. May.

“Peter Benjamin Parker, you are a disgrace to the Parker name! Come here, now .” He looks up from his place, frozen in between MJ and Cindy, and finds May standing by his and MJ’s assigned area with crossed arms and a furious look on her face. Peter moves on auto pilot. He can’t hear MJ or Cindy yelling at May, can’t hear the hosts telling the cameras to cut, and can’t hear them call security. Here’s the thing. May was always abusive. Even when Ben was around- she just hid it better. She has a sort of power over Peter, despite them not wanting her to- he still follows her instructions. He just… dissociates through them. Their head is fuzzy and his eyes are unfocused, but he still listens, even as he tries to protest.

“M-May, you c-can’t be here. Y-You need to l-leave.” May scoffs and steps into Peter’s face. His eyes are drawn to her hands, and the sheer amount of rings on them. That’s going to hurt- and he knows it will happen. They can see the way her fist clenches in anticipation. She’s just waiting. “No. You need to leave. You will drop out of this competition, young man. You will come home, and you will publicly apologise for the lies you spread about me! I am not abusive! I was helping you see the error of your ways! You’re disgusting, but I found a nice camp that you’ll go to-”

“-You have no power over them! You’re not his guardian! Leave them alone!”

“-No way in hell are you sending them to a Conversion Therapy Camp, bitch!” Peter flinches at May’s furious look, even when it’s levelled at MJ, not him.

You! You’re the bitch that made him sick! He got this- this TRANNY DISEASE from you! You’re a disgusting faggot, and you will no longer be allowed to see my nephew .” When May steps towards MJ and raises her hand to slap them, Peter snaps out of his shock and catches her wrist, holding her in place and hissing at her with narrowed eyes. “Do not touch them. Leave, May.” May looks at him in shock for a moment, and they know why. Peter was weak, feeble, and never talked back when they lived with May, but he had grown as a person. She laughs, and it sends chills down their spine.

“Well look who grew a pair of balls!” Before he has a chance to reply, his spidey sense blares in their head. He doesn’t dodge. He never has- he has to protect his identity. The slap is hard, and her rings cut open his face, but he doesn’t do more than turn his head and blink back tears. They will not cower anymore.

The next thing he knows, May is screaming in anger, and is being restrained by someone, who is most definitely not security. Peter blinks in shock. There, holding May’s arms behind her back with a scowl on his face, is Nick Fury. He speaks so coldly, that everyone in the surrounding area flinches. “Ms Parker. You have just made the worst mistake of your life. Would you like to know why?” May just continues screaming, so Fury answers anyway. “Peter Parker is the most important person in the world to a lot of very important people. You go near him again, and you will have the entire force of Shield and the Avengers after you. Are we clear?” May seems to finally realise who is speaking to her, as she blanches and pales before falling silent.

Fury hands her off to the cops, before approaching Peter with a frown. Automatically, Peter straightens and greets the man as he would any other time, sticking his hand out to shake and ignoring the blood dripping down his face. “D-director Fury, sir. It’s- I didn’t expect to see you here…” Peter is now silently panicking about his cover, but Fury has it covered. “Thor, Bruce, Rhodey, and Pepper were all raving about your performance, Parker. I had to see for myself. Besides, you're my employee just as much as you are Stark’s. You work for Shield, too. Do I not get to see my employee perform?”

Peter lets out a small sigh of relief, before speaking again, aware that literally everyone was watching. “T-Thank you, f-for the save, sir.” Fury shakes his head, before placing a hand on their shoulder and speaking to the hosts, who look an odd mix between shell shocked and furious. “Is there somewhere I could talk to the kid in private? Preferably with a first aid kit?” They’re immediately directed to one of the judges private offices, and Fury takes on an almost parental (Grandparental?) roll as he takes off Peter’s make up and wipes away the blood, speaking as he patches up the injuries.

“So, this is the very important Defenders mission, hm?” Peter winces and tries to apologise, but Fury cuts him off with a shake of the head. “I sometimes forget that you’re still a child, Peter. That’s my fault. Besides, you were right about the mission, you would have just been in the way. Honestly, I was just curious about what you were doing. I assume Stark and Rogers don’t know?” Peter shakes his head, slumping in relief when Fury confirms he isn’t angry.

“I didn’t- May… I don’t want to risk it. I know they’re literally gay, but…”

“But there’s a difference between being gay and being genderqueer, and a lot of people are ok with one, but not the other?” Peter blinks in shock, nodding frantically.

“Yes! I- I know, logically, that they wouldn’t mind, but with what happened with May, I’m just scared. I know I shouldn’t be, I’m Spiderman for god's sake, but… yeah.”

“Nobody is fearless, Parker. Not even the Avengers. It’s understandable. May won’t be bothering you anymore. She’ll be going away for a very long time.” Peter lets a tear fall, trying not to sob at the pure relief he feels.

Peter doesn’t know how long he and Fury talk, but a knock sounds on the door while they’re discussing Fury’s secret hobby of crochet, and one of the hosts comes in, looking concerned. He winces at Peter’s injuries. There’s a large bruise up the left side of his face, a cut on his cheekbone, and a cut on his eyebrow. “Hi, Hi. So sorry to interrupt, but… it’s time for the eliminations. You’re welcome to stay here, Peter. MJ has offered to go alone, but I thought I’d offer, anyway. Nobody expects you to, and the judges have been informed of the situation. Uh, don’t worry about this being seen, by the way, the cameras were cut as soon as we realised something was wrong.” Peter and Fury share a disbelieving look at that. The show itself may not upload the footage, but they had both seen at least five phones recording the incident, and it would likely be all over twitter within the hour. Peter takes a breath, but stands and agrees. Fury stands with him, and the host nods when he ‘requests’ to wait backstage for Peter.

Peter and MJ step on stage, hand in hand. Everyone else is already in position. He hears Cindy gasp at his appearance, but he sends her a gentle nod, assuring her that he was ok. She sends him a concerned frown, but nods. The hosts make their announcements. “Apologies for the wait. There was an… incident backstage involving one of our dancers.” Peter sucks in a sharp breath, and MJ squeezes their hand tightly, comforting him. “Now, as you know, there are currently 8 competitors. 5 of you will be eliminated today, and 3 will move onto the finals. No more changes will be made to your groups, so there will only be a red or a green light shone on you. I’m sure I don’t need to explain which is which.”

“Good luck to you all. We will truly miss those who are eliminated. Judges, any comments?”

“None of these decisions were made easily. You are all incredibly skilled, and I can truly see each of you growing into professionals one day.” With that, the announcements begin. Each time someone is eliminated, one of the judges will talk to them for a minute, whereas when someone is kept in, they say nothing.

One group has already turned green by the time Peter and MJ are called. Cindy hasn’t been called on yet, and Peter can hear her heart pounding against her chest, despite the surrounding noise. “Peter Parker and Michelle Jones. Good luck, you two.” Again, for a moment, there is nothing but silence, until…

The light turns green.

The crowd screams, and Peter and MJ tackle each other into hugs, laughing hysterically. Cindy claps excitedly, but her face is showing nerves. Peter sends her a supportive nod, and MJ does the same. They really want her to succeed.

There are two more people on the floor who haven’t been sorted. One green light is available, and it’s between Cindy, and a boy Peter hadn’t ever spoken to, and knew nothing about. Peter and MJ were clutching each other's hands as the hosts spoke again. “Unfortunately, we have the awful job of announcing our final elimination. Tonight, the person going home will be…”

“Cindy Moon. I’m so sorry, Cindy.” The boy behind Cindy shouts out in joy, and Cindy nods with a trembling bottom lip. The youngest judge moves to speak to her, being the one who had helped out and guided the three young teens from the beginning (each competitor had a judge helping them), but Peter and MJ share a look. They see the way Cindy’s hands are clenching and unclenching, the unshed tears in her eyes, and the tightness of her jaw, and they both move at the same time, instead of staying under the spotlight as expected. They immediately wrap their arms around Cindy’s shoulders, and she relaxes in their supportive holds, frantically wiping away tears as the judge finally speaks, looking almost heartbroken at the group.

“Cindy, I am so sorry. I truly, truly believe you have what it takes to become one of the best dancers out there, and I hate that we had to eliminate you. Your personality shines through when you dance, and you move as though you were born to do so. Your relationship with your friends and your love for them is admirable, and I for one, am so glad to have had this time to get to know you. I wish you the best in your future endeavours.” Cindy nods and thanks the woman sincerely before turning to fully hug Peter and MJ, and they both feel tears soak their shirts. They notice that all of the people who were eliminated are slowly moving off stage, while the three winners are directed to stay, so reluctantly, they let Cindy leave, watching as she immediately flies into her parents waiting arms, and noting that the decathlon team were there too, waiting to wrap their arms around her.

They move back to their positions under the green spotlight, and half-listen to the judges speaking to the other two groups until it’s their turn. The young woman speaks to them, just as she had done for Cindy- she was their mentor, too. “Before I begin, I just want to check in. Peter, we heard what happened backstage. I’m sorry I couldn’t come check on you. Are you alright?” MJ squeezes his hand reassuringly, and he tries not to stutter through his response. He’s clearly injured, but he feels like she’s asking about his mental state. “I- I’m ok. It was, uh, sorted out. Thank you for asking.” She nods, before clearing her throat and moving on.

“I really believe that you two have the skill, energy, and spirit to win this thing. I really, truly do. However, I think you two are too comfortable. You stick with hip hop, and that’s great, don’t get me wrong, but I think showing some more of your range could seriously benefit you. We’ll have our meeting this Saturday to discuss, yes?” Peter and MJ share a hesitant look before slowly nodding their heads, answering a few more questions, and being dismissed. Their friends tackle them in hugs immediately, and even Fury hugs him, grumbling slightly as he does so.

Peter smiles. Everything isn’t ok right now, but he just might get there soon enough.

6. Tony, Steve & Finals

Peter wakes up with a raging hangover the next morning. See, Fury had left shortly after Flash announced that the kids would celebrate at his house, and Cindy’s parents and MJ’s dad had followed shortly after.

The party had started relatively tame, until Cindy suggested shots. After a few, both she and Peter had started getting angry, at different things, but not at each other. Peter was angry about May, and the throbbing pain in his face, and Cindy was angry about being eliminated. In an effort to cheer the other two up, Flash had just shoved more drinks into their hands. Both had ended up drinking straight out of the bottle, and both had passed out on top of eachother on Flashes couch. He has no fucking clue how he made it back to the tower.

He groans and sits up, straining his ears for any sign of movement. He could hear Tony and Steve snoring from down the hall, meaning that they were back from the mission. Oh god, what if… “Friday? How did I- How did I get home? Also, uh, has anyone seen me?”

“Director Fury texted Agent Romanoff to inform her that you were at a party, and when she came home from Croatia, she collected you from Flash’s house, along with Katniss. Boss and Elsa do not know that you were out. I covered for you, and they went straight to bed. I should alert you to the fact that Agent Romanoff, Katniss, Birdman, Arm-y Veteran, Magic Lady, Hammer God, and Science Bro are all headed your way.”

What? But- They should be asleep! They just got home, what, two hours ago?” The silence that follows is almost amused, before Friday replies. “Three hours, actually, and none of them have slept yet. They wanted to see you before Boss and Elsa did.” Peter groans and winces against the sudden light of his bedroom door being opened. He shoves the blanket over his head, and collapses back down. His head is pounding.

“Rise and Shine, tiny alcoholic!” Peter groans at Sam’s overly chirpy voice, sending him a middle finger and mumbling into the pillows. “‘M not an alcoholic! ‘Was one night, ‘nd I had good reasons.” Wanda just laughs at his clear misery. Clint and Bucky mutter in agreement, and Peter realises immediately that they know about May. Before he can ask how, Thor speaks, surprisingly quietly, so as not to wake Tony and Steve. Nat and Bruce are suspiciously silent. “Nonsense! Young Peter was simply celebrating, as every brave warrior does!” Peter frowns.

“Thor… I didn’t fight anyone, I’m not a warrior.” Thor’s face softens, and he sits on the bed next to Peter, patting him on the shoulder. “You stood against your abuser- you protected your friend, young Peter. You may not have fought a physical battle, but in my experience, the mental ones are far more difficult. In my opinion, you are a warrior.” Peter almost starts crying right there, surrounded by the Avengers, who love them like a true family, but he doesn’t, because a bottle of gatorade is thrown at their head, and he jerks to catch it, glaring at Natasha. Bruce follows her lead, launching a bottle of Advil to him. He glares slightly, but accepts them gratefully and swallows the pills, before addressing Natasha and Clint.

“Мама паук, Clint, I’m sorry you had to come get me. I didn’t- I wasn’t intending on drinking that much.” Nat’s face softens, and Clint waves them off with a concerned frown. Natasha comes and sits next to him, on the opposite side to Thor. “We know about May, Детеныш паука. It’s all over twitter. Are you going to tell Tony and Steve?” Peter freezes and takes a shuddering breath before shaking their head. “F-Fury already took c-care of it. There’s n-no need to worry them. It’s no big deal.” None of the Avengers look happy with that, but they nod anyway, slowly leaving. Bruce is the last one to leave, handing Peter a pill reluctantly.

“This will stop your healing factor. You got injured on national television, it’ll be suspicious if you’re suddenly healed.” Peter nods and quietly thanks the man, but Bruce hesitates to leave.

“Peter? You know we all love you, right? You’re our kid, all of ours, even if it was just Tony and Steve who adopted you. Any one of us would have gladly taken you in. I actually think Nat is trying to make that happen- like, a group adoption, and Fury is helping. I just- we love you, Peter. No matter what.” Peter sighs, but nods, smiling at Bruce.

Saturday morning, two days later. Tony’s POV.

Peter had just gone out to hang out with MJ, his… something that was definitely more than friends to him. Steve was coming back soon with breakfast from the coffee shop by the tower, and Tony was scrolling through twitter on his phone, waiting for his husband to come back.

When Steve comes in, he kisses Tony on the cheek before placing their breakfast and the newspaper on the counter. They eat in a comfortable silence as Steve flicks through the paper and Tony scrolls, until Steve chokes on his coffee, staring wide eyed down at the newspaper before looking up at Tony with confused eyes. “Tony- Peter is in the news.” Tony’s heart jumps in his chest, and he rips the paper out of Steve’s hands, assuming Peter somehow revealed his identity. His jaw drops when he reads the article.

Young queer teen attacked by abuser in dance competition- still moves to finals!

He looks at the picture, clearly screenshotted from an online post, of Peter wearing makeup and a crop top, bleeding from the side of his face and staring down May Parker as… Fury, of all people, holds her back. Tony reads through the paper frantically, learning a lot about his adoptive son. The first being that he may not be his son, as the paper refers to him (them?) as genderqueer and pansexual. He learns that Peter, MJ, and Cindy were on a very popular tv show, and Peter and MJ had made it to the finals, which would be held in three weeks time.

He puts the paper down with shaking hands. Why wouldn’t Peter tell them this? Why did Fury know, but they didn't? Who else knew? How did this escape Tony’s notice? He looks up at Friday as Steve reads the article again. “Friday? How did I not know about this?” Friday hesitates.

“Because Peter requested that I not inform you. As you now know, however, I will unblock any and all mentions of Peter from your social media. You should be aware that the rest of the Avengers, Director Fury, Pepper, and Rhodey all already know. I suggest you speak with them before doing anything rash. It may help you gain some perspective as to why Peter did not inform you.” Tony growls at the fact that everyone knew before him, but Steve, always the calm one, runs a hand over Tony’s arm and squeezes his hand. Tony scrolls through twitter, seeing the comments on his kids relationship with his friends and MJ specifically, and brief gifs of his dancing. With that, he grabs Steve and drags him down to the common room, where everyone is already waiting, Friday having told them what had happened.

Nat explains everything to them in detail, and Tony and Steve, while saddened, accept that Peter did have valid reasons to keep everything from them. It also made them feel a lot better when they found out that none of them had actually been told, instead just finding out accidentally. Steve moves to call Peter and tell them to come home so they could talk, but everyone protests, telling them to wait until Peter decides to tell them. Neither man was ok with that, but compromised and said that they would wait until after the competition to tell him that they knew.

The rest of the day is spent watching any and all recordings of Peter dancing. The Avengers join them, and are once again impressed by the teenager's skill. Tony can’t help but point out how tense the rehearsals between Peter and MJ were for their performance of ‘baby boy’. They were very clearly flirting with each other throughout the entire practice. It's adorable.

Finals night- Peter

Cindy walks Peter backstage an hour before the show starts, wishing him and MJ luck before rushing off to find the others and trying to get the best seats in the audience. Peter doesn’t blame her for not sticking around- it must not be easy, being back but not to perform. He shakes off their nerves and goes to get changed. He’s not wearing his usual performance outfits today, but a white shirt and black slacks. He leaves the top few buttons undone, before going to find MJ.

They’re wearing a red flared jumpsuit with cape sleeves, and Peter swallows harshly against the sudden dryness in his mouth. They look amazing. They look like MJ. They had refused to wear a dress, and had chosen their own outfit to wear- something formal, but still theirs. They refused to pretend to be something they weren’t, and Peter loved it. “You look- You look amazing, Em.” MJ smirks, and looks Peter up and down with a raised eyebrow. “Not too bad yourself, Pete. Ready to go to makeup?” Peter grins and nods, following them with a slight bounce in his step.

MJ gets red eyeshadow and black glitter, and Peter gets black eyeliner, and no glitter. He’s a little disappointed. They like glitter, but fine, he gets that they’re going for subtle. MJ pats their cheek in sympathy, and he sticks his tongue out at them. He then really hopes the cameras missed it, ‘cause that would be embarrassing.

They do final interviews with the hosts while the other two competitors are dancing, until finally it’s their turn. They approach the microphone, and their mentor/favourite judge speaks kindly to them. “Welcome back, you two! Being the final act must be scary, hm?” The two of them laugh and nod, glancing at each other with matching nervousness.

“So, I know you both took my advice, I helped with the choreo, of course, but why don’t you tell us what dance you’re doing.”

“We’re going to be performing the Cha-Cha-Cha.” The older judge speaks, next.

“To what song?”

“Beggin’, the Maneskin version.” The blonde woman raises an eyebrow. “That’s risky…”

MJ smirks but says nothing, so Peter answers. “We wouldn’t be here without taking a few risks, Ma’am. Sometimes it’s worth it.” She smiles and nods, waving them off to set up.

They get into position, and take two deep breaths. There are no special effects. It’s just Peter and MJ, and that is enough. Their mentor thought so, Natasha thought so, and they thought so. The music starts, and they flow with the dance

The dance ends with Peter’s hand resting lightly against MJ’s neck, face to face, as though they were about to kiss. They smile at him, and he swallows slightly before smiling back and separating, looking at the judges, who were clapping along with the audience. Their mentor says one thing before sending them away to wait for their final judgments. “That risk, you two, was definitely worth it.”

Peter and MJ are high on adrenaline as they rush off stage, hanging off of each other and giggling like children. The hosts laugh at their excitement and coax answers out of them before allowing them to go wait.

They’re called back twenty minutes later, and the three competitors stand next to each other, under the lights, just as they had in the last competition. The hosts explain the process. They would announce second place first, and then the two remaining competitors would find out who won, and who lost, at the same time.

The trio who performed before Peter and MJ came second, being escorted off stage by the hosts after they’re given a silver trophy and flowers. Now, it’s between Peter and MJ, and the man who beat Cindy in the Semi Finals. Peter is determined to beat him, and MJ’s grip on his hand suggests they feel the same. “And in first place is-” The studio goes dead silent in anticipation.

“-Peter Parker and Michelle Jones! Congratulations!” The crowd cheers, and Peter lifts MJ into a hug in celebration, spinning them around. When he puts them down, he notices a conflicted look in their eye, and frowns at them, confused. “Em, wha-” They cut him off.

“-Fuck it.” With those words, they cup his face in their hands and kiss them. Peter kisses back without hesitation, only breaking apart when the crowd cheers so loud he has to hold in a wince. They blush bright red, and MJ smirks at them, before turning back to the judges, silently promising to talk about what just happened, later. He grins a bright smile.

The judges congratulate them and come shake their hands before they’re sent to be interviewed by the hosts, who don’t seem to care about the competition. “How long have you two been dating?”

“Was that for dramatic effect?” MJ holds Peter’s hand in their own and the two of them take turns answering.

“We- haven’t been dating? I- maybe we are now?” He looks to MJ as he speaks, and they send him a completely certain nod that makes their entire body relax. It wasn’t just for show or something, then.

“Wasn’t for drama. I just wanted to kiss them. I mean, I have wanted to for a while, but it felt right.” The hosts coo at them, continuing to question them on their relationship before asking a couple of questions about winning and finally letting them go.

As soon as they're alone in their shared dressing room, finally away from the cameras, MJ kisses Peter again, this time… very intensely, and they easily match their pace. Both are clearly making up for lost time. They groan when a knock sounds on the door, and Peter squeaks when it opens without them actually giving permission for them to do so.

There is a large crowd outside the door, including the Avengers, MJ’s dad, Fury, Rhodey, Pepper, the decathlon team, and… Tony and Steve. Tony and Steve were there, and they knew. Peter freezes in place as they make eye contact with his adoptive fathers. “Y-You… you’re here? H-How are you-”

“-We found out two days after the semi finals, son- Kid, I mean. You were in my newspaper. We love you, Peter, and we’re so proud of you.”

“Damn right, underoos! We’re so proud of you! Both of you. Congratulations on the win, kids. And finally getting together- we’ve all been waiting for it.” Peter hears MJ’s father mutter an amused ‘damn right’, but his head is spinning. MJ shoves him towards his fathers, and they immediately tug him into a tight hug, which turns into a cuddle puddle very, very quickly.

Peter smiles from the centre of the group. He was loved, happy, and accepted. He would be ok.

They finally know. And they won!

Chapter 7: +1. Lip Sync Battle- Two Months Later

Lip Sync Battle, bitches.

Tom and Zendaya's lip sync battle lives in my head rent free.

Chapter Text

“Young boss, you should know that the Avengers have returned from their mission, and are currently in the common room preparing to watch you and Mx Jones’ Lip Sync Battle performances. Boss says ‘Get your ass down here spider-kid, we’re sorry we couldn’t make it to the live performance.’” Peter jolts up from his desk with a loud curse. They had purposefully asked Fury to send the Avengers on a mission last night, so he could perform without crippling embarrassment! Now they’re watching it? He has to stop this, right now.

He runs down to the common room and stands directly in front of the TV, where their face was on screen, for his first of two performances. “Y-You know, I- It’s really- no big deal, at all. You- you should just, like, not watch it.” They all narrow their eyes at him, and Steve speaks up, concern evident in his tone.

“Peter, I thought you knew that we support you?” Peter nods frantically, pointedly not making eye contact with Nat, who had found his costume a couple of weeks before, and knew exactly why they didn’t want anyone to watch. “I- I do, it’s just… embarrassing.” Steve frowns, and Tony scoffs, motioning for Peter to sit in between them. Peter would do no such thing. If they insisted on watching them like this, he didn’t want to be within arms reach, so he shoves themself into the only empty recliner, and prepares for his inevitable death via humiliation.

They get through Peter and MJ’s first, very calm, very tame, very appropriate performances too quickly for Peter’s liking, before finally getting to MJ’s big performance . He can’t keep the grin off of his face as they watch them do an amazing impression of Bruno Mars. They really think that MJ would have won, if it wasn’t for his… extreme need to be extra in everything they do. “Damn, kid. No way you’re beating that!” Clint laughs, but frowns when Natasha simply raises an eyebrow, and Peter turns bright red. Nobody else notices the change, but Clint leans forward as Peter’s performance begins, clearly interested in what was happening.

Steve coos over Peter’s intro. “Awe, Peter! That’s so adorable.” Peter has his first of many full body cringes. He pointedly does not look at anyone.

They watch as Peter goes behind the umbrellas. Everyone, except for Nat and Peter, let out scandalised gasps. Peter is wearing fishnets, booty shorts, heels, and a corset. They watch in silence as Peter literally;

  1. Grinds down on an umbrella
  2. Twerks on MJ
  3. Very dramatically lets rain fall on them
  4. Flips and lands very hard on his back

And finally

  1. Wins

Nobody says anything for a moment, just staring at the now frozen screen as Peter slowly curls into his hoodie and becomes one with the chair.

Thor is the first to speak, letting out a loud cheer and clapping. “Child of Spiders! That was AMAZING! I too would like an outfit like that! I would like to dance like that! Will you teach me?” Peter chokes on air at the same time that Bruce does, but nods all the same, unable to get words out. Thor seems happy with his response all the same. Nat and Clint just compliment his dancing, not super fazed by his… promiscuity. Wanda makes fun of them about his relationship with MJ, but compliments his dancing. Bruce just nods, still staring at Thor. Sam just… stares at him, before very slowly speaking. “I… the dancing was… skilled.” Bucky slaps the man across the head, leans forward ever so slightly, and grins. “How’d Flash like that performance, kid?” Peter throws a pillow at him. For his information, Peter received a message that contained many drooling emojis, an eggplant emoji, and a ‘Holy fuck , Peter’. So, it's safe to say that he liked it. MJ liked it more, though.

Tony stays silent for a moment, before turning to Peter oh so slowly, with a bright grin forming on his face. “Peter Parker-Stark-every other Avenger’s last name, I am so fucking proud of you. You inherited my taste for drama! I LOVE IT!” Peter lets out a startled laugh at this, but beams proudly at his father, before hesitantly turning to Steve, who was still staring wide eyed at the screen. He clears his throat and faces them, and he has tears in his eyes. His words are nothing at all what Peter expects.

“Peter… I am so, so happy that you can do that. That you have the confidence, the safety, to be who you are unapologetically. I am so glad that May Parker didn’t ruin that for you. I love you, son. Even if I'm not a fan of the outfit. I love you.” Peter softens at that, hugging his other father tightly. They’ve never been happier. Never been more himself before, and he wouldn’t trade any of it for anything.
