Chapter 1: Matchmaking is Hard

Chapter Text

Shez was concerned.

Dimitri seemed to have everything he needed to be a successful King. He discovered the forces behind his family’s murder, and they were now hunting them down. He united his Kingdom under his rule and forced out any opposition. Life was returning to Duscur under Dedue’s leadership. Felix embraced his role as his Shield and watched out for him. Sylvain gave up skirt chasing and was giving his all as a general. Ingrid sought her own path as his loyal knight. They formed a successful alliance with Claude and Leicester, and the war against the Empire now tipped in their favor. Shez took her ragtag forces and turned them into a disciplined army, loyal to their King.

So why was Dimitri so freaking miserable all the time?

The answer finally came as Shez walked around their camp. She turned a corner and caught Sylvain kissing Ingrid. She squeaked and ran away. Next, she saw Dedue and Mercedes making flower crowns for the children. They smiled radiantly at one another. It finally hit her when she overheard grouchy Felix stuttering out an invite to Annette for the opera.

Dimitri needed a girlfriend.

But who? Shez had never tried to set up anyone before. She could invite Dimitri and one special person to lunch. Yes, this would be perfect. But who? Who would be an intriguing dinner companion for Dimitri? It was then that she saw Flayn heading to pray in the chapel. Flayn was desperate to be around people too! It was perfect. And Seteth couldn’t complain because he didn’t have the authority to stop the King of Faerghus from eating with his precious sister. The two would definitely hit it off.

She asked Flayn to supper in the dining tent, and Flayn enthusiastically agreed. Flayn even offered to cook the entire meal. “I’ve always wanted to try my hand at sweet and salty fish sauté,” she said. “Brother never lets me cook.”

Dimitri also agreed to sit down for a meal with them. Flayn was so proud of her cooking and Dimitri seemed to enjoy eating it. Now that the meal was served and the conversation was going well, she could enact the next part of her plan. The boy she paid off earlier delivered her a message saying that there was a squabble in the battalion tent that they needed her to mediate. She did her best acting to feign disappointment and left Dimitri and Flayn to enjoy their meal. As she walked away seeing their contented faces, she congratulated herself for being able to read people so well.

Then Seteth blocked her path, “What do you think you are doing?”

She had prepared for this scenario. She raised her head, squared her shoulders, and stated, “I know you think you’re being a good big brother. But Flayn deserves to date, and Dimitri deserves a bit of happiness. Look at them. Aren’t they cute?”

Seteth gasped, “You set Flayn up on a date?”

Shez cocked her head sideways, “Well, yeah. Wait, why are you mad at me if you didn’t think it was a date?”

Seteth pinched the bridge of his nose, “Your egregious attempt at matchmaking aside, that is not why I am upset. You let Flayn cook for His Highness. Do you know what you have done?”

Shez shook her head, “No, Flayn said that you don’t allow her to cook. You should let her try things, Seteth. She needs to live her life.”

“It is for everyone’s safety that I do not allow her to cook. Flayn’s cooking is horrendous. I do not know how she manages to burn meat on the outside but keep it completely raw inside. His Highness is far too kind to tell her. It is already too late for him. He has eaten half of it. He will finish that meal out of politeness, and then something horrible will befall him,” Seteth explained.

Shez crossed her arms, “I don’t think you give Flayn or Dimitri enough credit.”

Seteth pointed to a nearby bucket, “You might as well keep that near His Highness tonight. He is going to need it.”

Seteth wasn’t wrong. Shez found Dimitri heaving that night outside his tent. She held his hair back as he wretched, “Dimitri, what happened?”

He was chilling from a cold sweat, “I don’t know. The only thing I had today was the meal with Flayn. It had a few suspiciously crunchy bits but seemed otherwise fine.”

“Did it taste off to you?’ Shez asked.

Dimitri grabbed his stomach, “Shez, I have to tell you something. I haven’t been able to taste food since Duscur. No matter what I eat, I can scarcely taste it.”

No wonder he barely ate and when he did, it was just a few favorite things from his childhood. Dimitri’s life was even sadder than she thought. She rubbed his back, “Well, maybe next time you and Flayn do something, it doesn’t have to be centered around food. You could take her on an expedition.”

Dimitri shook his head, “She’s very nice, but Seteth has been glaring at me all day. I can’t deal with the Church’s anger while fighting the Empire. Thank you for staying with me tonight, friend. I think I’m going to try to lie down.”

He patted Shez on the shoulder and staggered back into his tent.

So, this was going to be harder than she thought. She could figure this out. Dimitri trained constantly. Surely a sparring partner would be much better than a dining companion. It wouldn’t remind him of his lack of taste. But who would be strong enough to match a Blaiddyd? She mentally went through the crested women in the camp. Thunderstrike Cassandra, of course! They even seemed to know each other from childhood, so it would be adorable. Plus, Shez was in charge of setting up training partners. This would be too easy.

Dimitri and Catherine laughed when they saw they were partners, and Shez thought this was a good sign. It wasn’t until she saw a Mercedes with an entire battalion of healers running to the Training Grounds that she thought something was amiss. She ran after them and saw Felix and Shamir standing grimly outside the ring. “What happened?”

“Idiots + crest + relics is what happened,” Felix snapped.

“They started with training weapons, but Catherine kept upping the ante, so they switched to their relics,” Shamir explained.

“On the plus side, they did more damage to the training grounds than to each other,” Felix sighed.

Shez pushed through the healers to see Dimitri in the middle of apologizing to Catherine. Her arm was limp at her side, but she was laughing. “Don’t be sorry, Your Highness. This is the most fun I’ve had training in a while.”

“So, you two would like to train together again?” Shez asked.

“Oh my, no,” Dimitri said. “I can’t let my strength get out of control like that again. I’ll just go back to training alone.”

Dimitri walked away, looking sad. Catherine shrugged, “He’s too hard on himself. But he’s also probably right. We get too carried away together. Best to train with other people.”

Mercedes healed Catherine’s broken arm, and Shamir took her hand and helped her up. Shez needed another strategy. Dimitri needed somewhere quiet to connect with someone. He loved long horse rides. Who else, besides Ingrid, would love horses as he did? She went to the stables and noticed dear sweet Marianne tending to her beloved Dorte. Perfect. It took a lot of coaxing, but she managed to convince the quiet girl to go on an expedition with Dimitri. As they rode off slowly together, Shez thought that this would surely work out.

Shez saw them return and tried to position herself casually leaning against the fence so it wouldn’t look like she had been waiting for them the entire time. They both seemed content on their return. She watched as Dimitri helped her dismount. “Thank you, Dimitri. I had a wonderful time,” she quietly said.

A wonderful time! Shez could barely contain herself. As soon as Marianne was gone, she strutted up to Dimitri. “So, looks like you two had fun,” she teased.

Dimitri shook his head, “I’m not sure I would call it fun. But it was beneficial. We talked about why we’re both so sad all the time. Did you know Marianne thinks she’s cursed? Anyway, after our talk, she finally feels like she can tell Ignatz how she feels about him.”

Shez’s eyes nearly popped out of her head, “Wait, what?” was all she stammered out.

Dimitri chuckled, “Marianne has had feelings for Ignatz for quite some time, but she thought she was cursed to be unhappy. We talked about how she is definitely not cursed, and now she feels confident enough to tell him her true feelings. A very nice ending, I must say.”

He walked away, leaving Shez stunned and confused.

Late that night, Shez sneaked down to the riverbank to think and regroup. She slipped her boots off and let her feet dangle in the cool water. How could she have misread each situation so badly? And who else was left in this camp that wouldn’t be a total disaster for Dimitri?

“Is this where you come to think of ways to screw up His Highness?” a voice from behind asked.

She turned to see Sylvain plop down next to her. “I don’t know what you mean,” she replied.

Sylvain laughed, “Oh I think you do. You’re trying to get Dimitri laid. I respect the plan but let’s recount your success rate. First, you poisoned him with Flayn’s cooking – something that could have been prevented if you had simply checked with Dedue first. Next, you let His Highness and Catherine go nuts while training, and he broke Catherine’s arm and slinked off to feel ashamed of his strength. This also could have been prevented if you had simply asked around because everyone, except you apparently, could have told you that Shamir and Catherine have been together for years. Also, Dimitri and Thunderstrike Cassandra have been destroying training grounds since they were kids. Their dads had to closely supervise them every time they sparred. And third, you got him to help Marianne realize that she had feelings for Ignatz – something everyone again knew about, and you would have known about it too if you had bothered to ask for help instead of blundering your way through Dimitri’s love life.”

Shez hung her head, “I guess I haven’t been very subtle.”

Sylvain shrugged, “Eh, Dimitri didn’t hire you for your finesse. But you need someone who excels in the art of romance to help you in this project.”

Shez laughed, “You’re right. I’ll ask Lorenz to help me first thing in the morning.”

Sylvain grabbed his chest, “Ouch. Hurtful. Come on, please let me in on this plan. You know how hard I’ve been trying to be useful during the war and this is my area of expertise! Besides, I want to see Dimitri be happy, too.”

“Okay, okay,” Shez laughed. “Who do you think we should set him up with next?”

Sylvain lay down and looked up to the sky, “It’s not an easy question. Dimitri’s only gotten close to a girl once, and he gave her a dagger. So awkward.”

Shez flopped backward to lie down as well, “A dagger is very practical!”

“You would think a weapon is a perfect gift,” Sylvain huffed. “But let’s think. She should be kind.”

“Obviously.”

“- And Beautiful.”

Shez raised an eyebrow, “Dimitri wouldn’t care about looks.”

Sylvain sighed, “Fine. She needs to possess a lot of inner beauty. She also needs to be strong enough to handle the crest of Blaiddyd. I hate to say it, but she would probably need a crest of her own.”

“So, we need to find someone kind, beautiful, strong, and possibly crested that isn’t already involved with someone?” Shez asked.

“That’s the thing,” Sylvain replied. “I don’t think she’s in this camp. I don’t think we’ve met her yet.”

“Well, I’m glad I let you into this project just so you could tell me Dimitri’s girlfriend doesn’t exist,” Shez huffed.

Sylvain smiled, “I didn’t say she didn’t exist. Just that we haven’t met. That’s what I’m here for – I’ll know the right one when I see her. Then you can weave your scheduling powers to make sure they’re always together. It can’t fail.”

Shez nodded but didn’t feel very confident that the magical right person for Dimitri was just going to appear any time soon.

Chapter 2: Something Good

Summary:

Sylvain thinks the Ashen Demon is the perfect woman for Dimitri. Shez needs more evidence.

Chapter Text

Arval told Shez that he had a bad feeling about the upcoming battle. They were going to fight troops led by General Randolph von Bergliez, backed up by The Blade Breaker and the Ashen Demon. She spent so long training to defeat the Ashen Demon – why did she feel so nervous now? Despite Arval urging her to attack her nemesis straight away, she decided to use a strategy that might save more of her troops’ lives. She sent a faction to scout out where the ambushers were hiding and led her troops on a different path. Arval screamed at her to go after the Ashen Demon, but she knew she needed to prioritize her soldiers over personal grudges. They crept their way to General Bergliez and surprised him. He fought valiantly but Shez cut him down. His last words were, “Fleche, forgive me.” Shez wondered what that meant.

Once their general was dead, the rest of the Empire troops began to retreat. It was now a matter of chasing them down. Many surrendered and begged for their lives. Shez stood next to Dimitri as he scanned the area after the fighting ceased. “General Bergliez was one of their greatest generals. This has dealt a crippling blow to the Empire,” he observed.

Shez heard a rustle from the side and saw movement out of the corner of her eye. Suddenly, a girl was on Dimitri’s back with a knife. Before Shez could react, the girl plunged the knife into Dimitri’s back, “Have I caught you off guard, Your Highness? Aww, does it hurt? I bet it hurts real bad, doesn't it? But it's nothing compared to what my brother felt! Now die you filthy monster!”

Dimitri fell forward as the girl pulled the knife out of his back and readied to plunge it in a second time. Shez’s sword burst from her hand. But before Shez had a chance to cut her down, someone else swooped in and yanked the girl off Dimitri’s back. Shez froze as she realized the Ashen Demon was now holding this angry girl who was screaming and trying to stab her instead of Dimitri. Jeralt the Blade Breaker came running to them, “Kid what do you think you’re doing?” he cried.

“Saving the client,” she replied. She pinned the girl to the ground and ripped the knife from her hand. “If this one dies, we won’t get paid.”

The rest of the Blue Lions ran over to assist. Dimitri’s wound was fortunately superficial, thanks to his armor. Mercedes gave him a quick heal while Dedue and Felix subdued the girl, who was the “Fleche” that Randolph had spoken about while dying. She was still screaming for vengeance until Annette finally cast a sleep spell on her. Dimitri ran over to the Ashen Demon and bowed, “You saved my life even though I am an enemy. I am grateful, Ashen Demon.”

The Ashen Demon winced, “Please, just Byleth. And you are not an enemy. Just not my client.”

Dimitri chuckled and then gasped, “Your hand is bleeding.”

He took her hand in his and Byleth looked confused, “It’s nothing,” she said.

Dimitri cast a heal spell, “It’s the least I can do. I don’t get to use my holy knight training very much.”

Jeralt cleared his throat and pulled Byleth away, “Well, this has been nice, but we must be going. We have one dead employer and the other one just tried to assassinate the King. It’s time to hit the road.”

Dimitri looked disappointed and then said, “In that case, what would you say to a new employer— the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus? We've crossed swords many times and suffered great losses on both sides. We surely bear some bad blood between us. But part of me wonders if we cannot put that gruesome history behind us. Assuming, of course, it was coin—not conviction— that brought you to the Empire's side.”

Jeralt laughed, “Don't worry, words like conviction aren't even in a merc's vocabulary. But if we do join up with you, I can't imagine there will be much avoiding the Knights of Seiros. The problem is, me and the archbishop have a - bit of a past together. I'd prefer to keep my distance if I can.”

He put his arm around Byleth and started to walk away, but Dimitri called out, “I'll remember that. The church has stationed themselves in the town of Camulus, within Blaiddyd territory. We'll be sure to keep you away from there, and I promise to warn you should Lady Rhea ever visit our encampment. Ah, and I'll place you in a separate unit should we ever fight alongside the knights themselves. Are those conditions agreeable? We could use your strength among our ranks if you're willing to join.”

Shez couldn’t believe this. Now the Blade Breaker and the Ashen Demon were just going to come work alongside them?

Jeralt paused and looked at Byleth, “What do you say? I doubt the Empire will have any jobs for us after all of this. No better time for a fresh start.”

Byleth thought for a moment and then nodded, “I agree this is the best course of action, Jeralt.”

They all smiled and agreed to meet with Dimitri later to write an official contract. Back at camp, Sylvain raced up to Shez. “Isn’t it wonderful?” he gushed.

“I don’t know. I’m feeling kind of empty at the moment. For the past two years, I’ve trained to fight the Ashen Demon, and now we’re going to be allies. It makes me wonder what my life’s purpose will – “

“I didn’t come over here to talk about your life plans. Make a vision board or something. Did you see how His Highness looked at that girl?” Sylvain was beaming.

Shez cocked her head sideways. Sylvain continued, “The Ashen Demon, or Byleth, or whatever. It’s her. She’s perfect.”

Shez was skeptical, “I’m still trying to get used to the idea that she’s our ally instead of an enemy. That’s a long way from trying to set her up with my best friend.”

Sylvain shook his head, “Let’s see. She was kind enough to save the lives of both Dimitri and the stabby girl.”

“She very clearly stated that was because of a paycheck. Plus, she wiped out my entire company without blinking,” Shez countered.

“Wasn’t your company trying to wipe out hers?” Shez nodded. “See? It wasn’t personal, just merc stuff.” Sylvain began to count on his hands, “Second, we know she’s strong. She can definitely hold her own against Dimitri, crest or no crest. Remember that time in Arundel when she fought off like three waves of our soldiers singlehandedly and then you still couldn’t take her down?”

Shez gritted her teeth, “Yes, I still remember.”

“Third, she’s gorgeous, and Dimitri is fascinated with her. He healed her hand! They’re already hand-holding. It’s like a fairy tale.”

“Healing someone’s hand isn’t the same as holding hands,” Shez retorted.

Sylvain crossed his arms, “I feel like you're letting personal biases affect your judgment.”

Shez paused. Sylvain wasn’t wrong. Byleth was certainly a unique individual. Her other attempts had seemed like good ideas until they went awry. Maybe it was time to try a terrible idea.

“All right,” she said. “Let’s put them together and see what happens. But I’m assigning you to clean out the wyvern pens for all time if something goes wrong.” Sylvain practically squealed.

Meals and training hadn’t gone well for the last dates, so Sylvain suggested starting simpler – with chores. No chances of food poisoning or Training Ground destruction this way. Shez put them on weapons maintenance, one of Dimitri’s favorite tasks. Shez stayed close by while Sylvain found a spot to observe. For a while, they worked in silence, until Dimitri noticed the sword at Byleth’s side. “That sword, it looks very well crafted, may I see?” he asked.

“Yes, this was a gift to my father from the Knights of Seiros. He doesn’t use swords, so he gave it to me. It’s very well balanced.”

She held it out to Dimitri with both hands, and his face fell. “I could never hold something so precious. I tend to break weapons made of traditional materials.”

She smiled at him, “I get it. I don’t know my own strength sometimes either.” She placed the sword in Dimitri’s hand. “I trust you,” she said.

He carefully took the sword and made a few practice swings. Byleth studied him, “Your form could use some work.”

Dimitri chuckled, “I know. Swords are not my strong suit.”

She placed her hands over his and adjusted his grip. Most people would never put their hands on a king, even with permission. However, Byleth didn’t seem to be the slightest bit intimidated by Dimitri’s status. Shez could see Sylvain smirking.

Chores went so well that Sylvain thought they were ready to try a meal. This time, however, Shez would cook. She rattled off some of Dimitri’s favorites to Byleth, hoping that she would like something out of his limited number of liked foods. Fortunately, Byleth liked everything Dimitri enjoyed, and Shez settled on fixing sweet buns for them. Byleth ate enthusiastically while Dimitri nibbled. Then Dimitri offered her his portion, and Byleth ate that as well. “I am astonished by how much you can eat,” he chuckled.

Byleth set the food down, “I apologize. I don’t usually eat with other people.”

Dimitri’s cheeks turned red, “I am sorry. I wasn’t trying to criticize. It’s just that I don’t eat very much and, well - it’s fun to watch you enjoy yourself.”

Now, Byleth’s face turned red, “Mealtimes are special when you’ve spent your entire life on the road. I always had to eat fast so Jeralt could skip out on his tab. I haven’t had the chance to sit at the table and talk to someone like this.”

Dimitri smiled, “Then I’m glad that I could be the one to share this meal with you, Byleth.”

Shez wondered if this could be real. These two were absolutely terrifying on the battlefield, but here they were giggling and blushing in the mess hall.

Byleth reached for Dimitri’s face, “You have a little icing on your nose. Let me get it for you.”

Sylvain was at a nearby table and looked over just in time to see Byleth wipe Dimitri’s nose and lick the icing off her finger. “Can’t let icing go to waste,” she said. Sylvain’s mouth dropped open, and Shez mouthed “Stop” to him.

Shez didn’t understand. The Ashen Demon struck down opponents without mercy. She was one of the most feared warriors in Fodlan. But here she was, helping Dimitri with his swordsmanship and blushing over sweet buns. Maybe she was just what Dimitri needed. The next step was training. Hopefully, Byleth wouldn’t try to assassinate Dimitri or anything.

Shez and Sylvain tried to maintain a respectful distance from the training ground. They heard the clanging of training weapons, but then everything went silent. “Uh-oh,” Shez said. They raced over.

They were shocked to see Byleth standing behind Dimitri with her hands on his hips. His cheeks were bright red, but he wasn’t trying to free himself from her grasp.

“Square your hips like this, and then you won’t be thrown off balance so easily,” she explained.

Dimitri thanked her and they went back to sparring. Dimitri’s crest activated while he attacked, breaking her training sword into pieces. Byleth’s face showed no reaction and she simply punched Dimitri in the face. The blow was hard enough to knock him down. Shez and Sylvain gasped. She just punched their ruler in the face like he was a bandit after her purse. But Dimitri was on the ground laughing.

She offered him her hand, and she helped him up. His hold on her hand lasted slightly longer than it needed to. “That was helpful coaching,” he said with a smile.

Sylvain could hardly contain his excitement. He grabbed Shez’s arm, “This is amazing. In the three times you’ve put them together we’ve had 1) hand holding on a sword 2) nose booping 3) and now she’s felt him up. They’ve already reached touching below the waist.”

Shez scrunched her face up, “Touching below the waist? How old are you? You’re leaving out the part where she punched him in the face.”

Sylvain shrugged, “Doesn’t matter because he seemed to like it. In fact, he seems to like everything she does to him.”

Shez had to admit that things were going better than ever before. Perhaps Shez had misunderstood Byleth. For years, Shez pictured her as a cold-blooded killer. But ever since she arrived in camp, she had immediately tried to help everyone with chores and seemed to earnestly want to help Dimitri improve his form. Arval had even stopped yelling in her ear to kill Byleth. And most importantly, for the past two days, Dimitri had smiled more than Shez had ever seen. Perhaps it was time to admit that the Ashen Demon was exactly what Dimitri needed, even if that meant Sylvain would be utterly insufferable for the next decade.

The next thing to try was an expedition, but Shez couldn’t find Byleth anywhere to tell her about it. Finally, Shez found her knelt in a meadow just outside of camp. She appeared to be in deep thought. “What are you doing?” Shez asked.

Byleth startled but then caught herself. “I’ve heard that giving flowers is a nice thing to do for your friends. I’m trying to pick some for Jeralt and Dimitri. I’ve heard each one has a special meaning, but I honestly don’t know which is which. Do you know much about flowers?”

So, the Ashen Demon picks flowers. Shez had definitely misjudged her.

“I am probably the last person in camp to ask about flowers and their meaning,” Shez chuckled. “You should just pick ones you think look nice.”

She smiled. “Okay then, how about these for Jeralt?” She pulled up a group of small white flowers and showed them to Shez.

“Now those I know. That’s valerian. My mom used to put them in medicine for our village,” Shez said.

“Where is she now?” Byleth asked.

Shez frowned, “She’s gone. She passed away some time ago.”

Byleth nodded, “My mother died when I was born. Supposedly my hair and eye color come from her.”

So, Byleth was also raised by a single parent. Maybe they had more in common than originally thought.

Byleth set the valerian aside and began to look for flowers for Dimitri. Shez decided to press, “So, what do you think of Dimitri? Not many people call him by his first name, you know.”

Byleth’s eyes widened, “Is it wrong that I do? He smiles when I call him by his name.”

“No, no! It makes Dimitri happy when people call him by his name instead of his title. You should keep doing it,” Shez replied.

“He’s so sincere,” Byleth continued. “But there is darkness and sadness lurking beneath. I sense he must have been through some terrible things on his own. I just like seeing his smile and want to be his friend. I’ve not had friends before, so I hope I’m doing it right.”

Shez was stunned. Dimitri kept his walls so high. Felix chastised him, Ingrid and Sylvain kept their distance, Ashe was intimidated by his title, Dedue insisted on being his vassal, and even Mercedes and Annette maintained a little space from him. But here was Byleth – the Ashen Demon of all people – who had only known him a short time and she had already deduced that he was sad and needed a friend. Shez had built up the image of the Ashen Demon in her head for so long, that she hadn’t considered that Byleth was just a lonely girl who grew up with no mom. Shez decided at that moment she would do her best to encourage this little friendship and maybe it would blossom into something more.

“What about these? They’re blue like Dimitri’s uniform,” Shez pointed to the Forget Me Nots.

Byleth grinned, “They’re the same color as his eyes. They’re perfect.”

Shez smiled back, “And it just so happens that I know the perfect setting for you to give him these.”

On her way back to camp, Shez saw Sylvain arguing with Dimitri at the Item Shop. She went over to investigate. “This is not a present, Your Highness. It’s homework,” he said with frustration.

“Sylvain, I don’t even understand why you are here. Byleth mentioned at lunch that her blade was dull, so I’m getting her a whetstone,” Dimitri pointed to the whetstone, and the shopkeeper reached for it.

Sylvain pulled Dimitri’s hand back from the counter and noticed Shez, “Shez, thank Goddess. Explain how no woman wants a gift to help her do her chores better.”

“It isn’t a gift, Sylvain. I’m just getting her a whetstone to be helpful.” The shopkeeper was now holding the whetstone, looking confused.

“Are you giving it to her? Then it’s a gift,” Sylvain said.

Shez studied the items at the shop. Byleth didn’t seem to know much about Fodlan, even though she spent most of her life traveling. “What about this history book?” She asked.

The shopkeeper picked up the book in his free hand.

Sylvain brought his hand to his forehead, “Giving someone a book is also giving them a homework assignment. You two are useless,” he declared.

The shopkeeper cleared his throat, “If I may, why don’t you get both items and then also get these two roses?”

He stacked the whetstone on top of the book and then gently placed two roses on top of the whetstone. Then he smiled tightly, “See, how it looks better with flowers?”

“It’s perfect,” Sylvain answered before Dimitri could say anything. “Can you wrap the whetstone and the book?”

The shopkeeper took a deep breath and said, “Certainly. Anything for His Highness.” While he wrapped the items, he muttered under his breath, “It’s not like you three haven’t already monopolized all my time and scared off any other potential customers this morning.”

With the gift in hand, Dimitri started to walk off. Sylvain grabbed his arm, “Where are you off to now?”

Dimitri tilted his head, “I’m going to give it to Byleth.”

Sylvain shook his head, “No, no, no. You are taking her on an expedition and giving it to her.”

Dimitri started to protest, but Shez spoke up, “Actually, Dimitri – I already set up an expedition for you and Byleth. That’s what I was coming to tell you before we got sucked into the gift drama.”

Sylvain grinned. Dimitri said, “Well if that is what you two think is best.”

Shez nodded, and Sylvain put his arm around Dimitri, “Just trust us.”

Shez and Sylvain hid as they watched Dimitri and Byleth ride their horses out of the camp. This had to go well. Dimitri and Byleth rode quietly up the mountain trail as Sylvain and Shez stumbled through the bushes, trying to be discreet. As they grew nearer to the top, Byleth shuddered. Dimitri offered her his cloak and Byleth accepted. “Perfect,” Shez whispered. Sylvain nodded in agreement.

Once they reached the top, they dismounted. Byleth picked a flower and offered it to Dimitri. He smiled and said, “Thank you. Did you know this particular species of flower is edible?"

He took the flower and ate it. Sylvain muttered, “Mother of God, he’s eating plants.”

But Byleth simply giggled, picked another flower, and ate it too.

“I don’t even know why they bothered packing snacks,” Shez shook her head.

Once Byleth and Dimitri stopped eating weeds and sat down, they began to talk. Shez and Sylvain found a hiding spot. It was as if Byleth already knew Dimitri’s favorite topics. She asked him about weapon maintenance, books, and other things that piqued his interest. He seemed to put her at ease as well, asking her about how she became so capable with the sword. They seemed to be scooting closer together as they continued to talk over their tea. Once the tea was finished, they were now sitting very close to each other. Byleth pushed a strand of stray hair out of Dimitri’s face, and he said, “Thank you. I try to gather my hair up like to keep it out of my eyes during battle, but it still wants to fall down.”

“Oh, please talk about something else besides fighting. She is right in your face,” Sylvain sighed.

Byleth looked down bashfully, "What are you looking at? Am I smiling? It's not something I do often."

Dimitri laughed, “Then I am lucky to receive such a boon on this day. Your smile is mesmerizing.”

Sylvain gasped, “Shit, that’s a great line. Who knew Dimitri had it in him?” Shez shushed him.

Byleth reached into her pack and presented Dimitri with the forget-me-nots, neatly bundled. Dimitri’s eyes widened, and he said, “For me? I will treasure them always. And I have something for you.”

He pulled out the package with the roses and presented it to Byleth. She blushed again and unwrapped them carefully. “Oh, a whetstone and a book? For me? This is so nice, thank you, Dimitri.”

They leaned in closer together, and Sylvain whispered, “Now, kiss her.” Shez elbowed him.

They sat staring into each other’s eyes, and Shez was sure neither one of them would ever make a move. Then Dimitri leaned in and gave Byleth a chaste kiss on the lips. They both turned bright red, and Dimitri said, “My apologies. That was improper.”

Shez clamped one hand on the back of Sylvain’s head and the other over his mouth.

But Byleth said, “No, it’s okay.” She gave him a light kiss on the cheek.

Shez kept her hand over Sylvain’s mouth, while Dimitri and Byleth giggled. Then Byleth stretched, “I suppose we should get back. Jeralt will wonder where I am.”

Dimitri helped her up and said, "Thank you for the treat. I had a wonderful time. I would love to do this again if that is acceptable to you."

Byleth nodded, and they began to pack up. Sylvain grabbed Shez and started to drag her back down the mountain. They ran as fast as their feet would carry them until they made it back to camp, where strong arms jerked them into a tent.

Inside, the Blue Lions were gathered and all staring at them. Dedue and Ingrid stood in front of them with their arms crossed and angry expressions. Ashe and Annette looked unsure, while Mercedes sported a knowing smirk. Felix looked in the other direction and tapped his foot impatiently as if he were dragged to this conversation against his will. “Why are you spying on His Highness?” Dedue asked.

“Security reasons?” Shez said. It was half true.

“Gods, you two look just like my parents. I am immune to that disappointed expression at this point,” Sylvain grumbled and started to walk away, but Ingrid grabbed his arm.

“I think you are trying to set up His Highness with Byleth Eisner, a girl who has previously been our enemy and someone we barely know anything about,” Dedue stated.

“His Highness is under so much stress, and you’re putting him in another stressful situation. We already know this girl is hiding from the Church. Even if they did somehow fall in love, it could never work,” Ingrid chided.

“The Boar is already stressed out enough. He’ll be even more annoying with a broken heart.” He looked at Ingrid, “Can I leave now? “Felix snapped.

“No, Felix, we all need to be here,” Ingrid said. Felix huffed and rolled his eyes.

Sylvain held his head high, “Again, I am impervious to your lectures. Anyway, you’re already too late. Dimitri kissed her just now.” Everyone gasped. “And before you all get mad at Shez and me, I will say this, can any of you honestly say that Dimitri has been happy? Truly happy?”

They all murmured and shook their heads. Sylvain was starting to smile, “And would you say he’s been achieving a better work-life balance these past two days? He was laughing over a meal. With Byleth. He bought presents. For Byleth. He’s on an expedition of his own free will, kind of. With Byleth.”

Shez looked at them and noticed Sylvain was starting to get them to come around. She put her arm on Sylvain’s shoulder, and she could tell Sylvain knew he was gaining control of the room. “Ashe, you of all people should know that Dimitri is the closest thing to Loog for us. Surely he deserves a wind maiden?”

Ashe’s face lit up, “You’re right! The Maiden of the Wind came from mysterious circumstances. I hadn’t noticed the parallels until now!

Well, that was one on their side. Sylvain’s smile grew wider, “And Annette, you promised to make sure Dimitri laughs and smiles. Isn’t this just one way of making sure that happens?”

Annette looked down for a moment and then smiled. “You’re right! I don’t want to see him with a permanent miserable expression on his face!”

Next Sylvain looked at Mercedes and said, “Now Mercedes – “

“- I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Mercedes interrupted. She crossed her arms. “I’m just irritated that you two didn’t think to include me in this plan.”

Sylvain bowed, “A thousand apologies, Mercedes. You will be consulted from now on.” Mercedes smiled and nodded her head.

Next, he turned to Ingrid, who let out a longsuffering sigh. “Ingrid, we’ve known him since we were children. Have you ever seen him captivated by anyone like he was when the Ashen Demon swooped in?”

She shook her head, “No. I suppose I can see now your intentions are good, and that this isn’t some prank. Just be careful.”

Shez was impressed. Sylvain rarely took the lead in meetings, but he had amazing people skills. She thought Dimitri and Felix should utilize his gifts more.

Sylvain looked up at Dedue with a grin. Dedue narrowed his eyes and said nothing. Sylvain’s smile fell and he cleared his throat, “Dedue, no one cares more about Dimitri than you.”

Dedue nodded, “You will keep me involved in this little plan of yours. I will hold you two personally responsible if this harms His Highness in any way.”

“I expect no less, Dedue,” Sylvain said.

“Great job, everyone,” Felix’s voice dripped with sarcasm as he headed out of the tent. “Instead of convincing the fool to knock it off, you’ve all gone ahead and agreed with him. Thank you for pulling me away from training to fight in the war that you all seem to have forgotten we’re fighting.”

The rest of the Lions slipped out, leaving Sylvain and Shez alone. Sylvain grinned from ear to ear, “Too easy,” he said.

“Frankly, it’s a little terrifying how easily you were able to change their minds,” Shez said.

Sylvain laughed, “Oh that. You get good at reading people’s moods when you grow up with a family like mine.” His face darkened for a moment. “It’s nice to use my gift for something fun, for a change.”

Shez shrugged, “Shouldn’t we back off now and let them figure out how they feel?”

Sylvain shook his head, “You’re so bad at this it’s almost endearing.” He put his arm around her, “Have you made the roster for our little trip to Daphnel?” Shez shook her head. “I think it’s time Dimitri had an adjutant.”

Chapter Text

Shez set up the roster for Daphnel: herself, Dedue, Byleth, and Dimitri. Felix saw the list and immediately became incensed. “I am being benched? The hell?”

“We already had two sword users, and we didn’t need a third,” Shez apologetically said. “Dedue, Dimitri, and I will clear the bandits out and Byleth will be Dimitri’s adjutant.”

Felix’s eyebrows shot up, “Why does the Boar need an adjutant? He’s just going to mindlessly charge in and – oh gods, this is some stupid setup. Well, try not to let your little project get everyone killed. I’ll be at the Training Grounds in case anyone needs an adult.”

He stomped away. Dimitri arrived and looked over the list. He smiled when he saw that Byleth would be partnered with him. He looked at her, “I usually work alone. It will be nice to have someone by my side.” Byleth blushed.

Shez thought it was almost too adorable.

It stopped being adorable on the battlefield. Shez hadn’t seen anything like it. The two of them cut a swath of destruction through the bandits. They worked together in perfect rhythm. It was both fascinating and terrifying. The battle was over in a matter of minutes.

Now that the entire Blue Lions (minus Felix) were involved in her plan, things were really progressing with Byleth and Dimitri. Anette and Mercedes now did her hair and makeup, which Dimitri seemed to especially like. He snapped two pens in that first war council meeting after seeing Byleth’s new look. Meanwhile, Ashe and Dedue took over food preparations for their expeditions. With those two cooking, there would be no need to eat weeds – at least Shez and Sylvain hoped. Shez made sure they did chores and training together. Although Felix refused to partake in the matchmaking, he greatly warmed up to Byleth after she completely destroyed him in a spar. He even allowed her to give suggestions about his sword grip. Byleth spent all her time at camp giving the Blue Lions gifts and eating with them. Shez was astonished at how quickly she acclimated to being part of the team.

One day, Jeralt stopped her, “I just wanted to say thanks for being so nice to Byleth. I had my reasons, but now I’m starting to realize that she needed to be around people her own age. Anyway, thanks, kid. It warms this old man’s heart to see her so happy.” He patted Shez on the shoulder and walked away.

Now that most of the Empire was under Kingdom control, it was time to reclaim Garreg Mach Monastery. Unfortunately, the best route would be straight through Ailell, the Valley of Torment. This meant bringing their forces through sweltering heat and lava. Claude and Hilda brought the rest of the Leicester Army to join forces. The Empire must have figured out what they were planning because their army stood ready to intercept. Even with their large numbers, it was going to be a difficult battle.

Once again, Shez assigned Byleth as Dimitri’s adjutant. This time it wasn’t a matchmaking thing – Shez knew that Byleth wouldn’t let anything happen to him. The mood was tense as the army ventured into the valley. The fighting was brutal, but they began to make progress once the feared Empire general, Ladislava, fell. Mercedes was even able to convince The Death Knight to join their ranks.

“So, we’re just letting everyone join our army, now?” Arval scoffed. The Death Knight also seemed confused. Mercedes, however, was thrilled that her little brother would no longer be an enemy.

As the Kingdom Army advanced closer to their base, Duke Aegir and Edelgard fled the battlefield, leaving Count Bergliez and his son, Caspar, to stop them. Dimitri and Byleth were a wonder to behold as they cut through the Empire troops. They worked in perfect sync, and Shez congratulated herself for assigning them to be training partners. The two warriors led the army through stronghold after stronghold, while Shez stayed a little further back to clear any stragglers. Dimitri and Byleth began to pull away from the rest of the Kingdom Army to Shez’s dismay. She tried to call out to them to come back, but they didn’t hear. At the next stronghold, a group of mages in black attacked Dimitri and Byleth with a barrage of miasma spells. Byleth threw herself in front of Dimitri to block, while Dimitri thrust Areadbhar toward the mages. Neither one noticed an assassin creep behind them. Shez screamed a warning, but neither one could hear over the roar of the battle. She watched helplessly as the assassin leaped and thrust a dagger into Dimitri’s neck. Blood spurted out, and he fell from his horse. The assassin managed to get one more jab into Dimitri’s neck before Byleth ran her sword through him. Shez, flanked by Dedue and Felix, ran as fast as they could, but everything was going horribly wrong. The remaining mages knocked Byleth down with another torrent of spells. Dimitri struggled on the ground. A Warmaster emerged and brought his axe down on Dimitri, severing his head from his shoulders. Shez fell to her knees and screamed.

Suddenly, Shez’s vision turned black, and she heard glass shatter. They were back in the previous stronghold. Byleth called out, “There’s heavy resistance ahead! Felix, Shez: protect Dimitri with me! Balthus, get over here and take out any mages! Sylvain, keep an eye out for any assassins. Ashe, be prepared to take out Warmasters!”

Everyone paused a moment and looked at Shez. She snapped to attention and yelled, “Do as Byleth says! Everyone, keep moving!”

This time, everything went smoothly. Balthus gleefully punched his way through the mages. He was thrilled that a bit of gold fell out of their cloaks, which he pocketed. Shez was too busy to care. The assassin and the Warmaster never even got close to Dimitri because Sylvain and Ashe took them out. Shez almost believed that she imagined Dimitri’s bloody death until Arval whispered, “My, my, the Ashen Demon is full of surprises, isn’t she?”

Count Bergliez may have been the Empire’s strongest warrior, but he was no match for a Blaiddyd – especially when that Blaiddyd was attacking with the Ashen Demon at his side. The Count and Caspar fled the scene. They were now out of the Valley of Torment and finally in striking distance of Garreg Mach. The mood in the Dining Hall was joyous. Byleth and Dimitri sat next to each other, surrounded by the rest of the Blue Lions. Shez, however, couldn’t stop trying to make sense of what she witnessed. Sylvain noticed she was alone and walked over.

“Um, you look like the Dining Hall just permanently ran out of cheese,” he said as he plopped down next to her.

She snickered, “No, my face would be much sadder if there were no cheese. I think I saw something in the battle. Something that wasn’t real. I can’t stop thinking about it.”

Sylvain laughed, “Of course, you saw something. It was like 1000 degrees. I saw my brother out of the corner of my eye. Freaked the hell out of me. But then I remembered I was wearing heavy armor in the hottest place in Fodlan, so naturally, my eyes were going to play tricks.”

Shez shook her head, “It wasn’t just a shadow, though. It was a whole scene. Then it was just gone.”

His expression turned serious, “We’ve all been pushing ourselves really hard. And they don’t call it “The Valley of Torment” for nothing. Go lay down. If after a good night’s sleep, you still feel off, get Mercedes to check you out.” He smirked, “I’ll keep an eye on our favorite couple. You rest.”

She did as Sylvain suggested, but she knew sleep wouldn’t help. She also didn’t know how to approach Byleth. She couldn’t just walk up to her at supper and ask if she reversed time. She decided to keep what she had seen to herself. She was enough of an oddity with her strange powers. She didn’t need to bring any more attention to herself.

Dimitri and Claude’s forces continued pursuing Duke Aegir and Emperor Edelgard as both sides raced to Garreg Mach. There was no way the two of them could reach the Monastery on foot without being spotted. However, Dimitri didn’t want to stray too far from the rest of their forces and suggested they give up the search to focus on retaking the monastery. Byleth disagreed, “No, let's keep looking. Sometimes the person you're looking for is hiding right under your nose the whole time.”

Sylvain perked up, “That is very true, Your Highness. Maybe you and Byleth can go look?”

Felix elbowed him, “We are not sending our King with just one mercenary for backup.”

“Felix is right,” Shez said. “Byleth and I can go.”

Byleth smiled and nodded. Shez thought this might be a good time for them to get to know each other better. They walked together down the path leading to the Monastery, but they saw no signs of Aegir or Edelgard. Shez began to feel hot around her collar. She stopped for a moment to catch her breath, but her sword appeared out of her hand against her will. Her mouth was moving, but Arval was speaking. What the hell was happening?

She lunged at Byleth, and Byleth barely had time to block the attack. Then she shadow-sneaked behind Byleth and tried to stab her in the back. With all her strength, she managed to stop herself from running her sword through Byleth’s chest. She barely choked out “Run,” before losing control again. As Byleth ran away, Arval screamed something about cutting out Byleth’s heart.

Against her will, Shez pursued Byleth. It was like a nightmare. Shez could see, hear, and feel everything, but she couldn’t stop attacking. Byleth was trying very hard to defend herself without hurting Shez. As she lunged once again, something orange blocked her sword. It was Areadbhar. Dimitri’s expression was grim. She wanted to call out to him and tell him to save Byleth, but instead, she warped Byleth to another stronghold.

Each time she warped Byleth away, Dimitri caught up to them. When he first showed up, he was mostly blocking Shez’s swords, but now he was attacking her in earnest. Shez learned that being on the business end of Atrocity was extremely unpleasant. However, Arval was unfazed and continued their assault. By now, her body was feeling very weak. Eventually, Arval forced her to retreat. Shez thought maybe she could regain control, but things got even worse. She rammed her hand into Solon’s chest and somehow trapped Dimitri, Claude, and Edelgard in a void. Apparently, she was the vessel for some Agarthan named Epimenides? They fought their way out by killing Epimenides and Arval. Now Shez had lost the one constant in her life for the past two years, and there was no way her Blue Lions would want her around. Now out of the void, she collapsed on the ground and drifted into unconsciousness.

Shez awoke, and her whole body ached. She was surprised to find that she was in her tent. Why would they bring her back into her quarters? Shouldn’t she be locked up or something?

“Oh good, you’re awake,” a deep voice said nearby.

She tried to sit up, but Dimitri gently pushed her back down. “Please don’t exert yourself. Your wounds are still healing.”

“My wounds? Who cares? Is everyone else okay?” Shez asked.

He nodded, “Byleth is resting. She was wounded in the struggle, but she will be all right. Mercedes and her father are taking care of her. Claude and I were unharmed. You got the brunt of it. I’m sorry for hurting you.”

Shez’s eyes widened, “You shouldn’t be apologizing to me. It’s my fault. I should never have gotten close to you all. I always knew my power would endanger everyone. I will leave first thing in the morning.”

Dimitri looked stunned, “We could never let you do that! All the good you have done for this army can’t be canceled out by one thing that was out of your control. We are close to ending this war, and I want you there with us. There will be much to do once the war is over, and we will need commoner voices like yours in the rebuilding effort.” He frowned, “It’s unfortunate that Byleth and her father will have to leave once we retake Garreg Mach. She, I mean they, have come to mean a lot to me these past few weeks.”

Shez smirked, “You don’t have to pretend around me, Dimitri. It’s obvious how you feel about her. You’ve even kissed.”

Dimitri gasped, “How would you know?” Then he sighed, “That would explain why that bush shook violently during our expedition.” His eyebrows shot up as the realization dawned on him, “And why we’ve been training partners every time, and all those meals you’ve invited us to, and all the weird comments from Sylvain.”

Shez sat up on one arm, “We meant well. You’ve been so unhappy. Look, Dimitri, you like her. She likes you. I should know. I hurt in places I didn’t know I had because you were trying to protect her from me. Just ask her to stay. Make up a job for her and Jeralt.”

He shook his head, “It isn’t that simple. You heard her father. They have some sort of disagreement with the Archbishop. He was willing to fight for the Empire just to keep Byleth away from the Church. A King of Faerghus does not act without the Archbishop’s blessing. This relationship is hundreds of years old. I can’t fracture it now to keep a mercenary nearby, no matter how much she may fascinate me.”

Shez frowned, “So the Archbishop helped you a little when your uncle tried to steal the Crown. As I recall, you went to war with the Empire to save her, gave her one of your cities, and are now retaking her monastery. Seems like letting you keep one merc around is the least she could do as a thank you.”

Dimitri stared out into the distance, “It isn’t so simple. Even if the Archbishop overlooked Byleth’s presence, it isn’t like she would be treated fairly among the nobles. They are still very much stuck in the past.”

Shez sat up, “And since when has their opinion mattered? You’ve liberated Duscur and stayed friends with Dedue. You let Ingrid be your knight instead of making her get married. You’ve kept Ashe close to you, despite his adoptive father siding with the Empire. You gave me my own army, even though I was a total nobody. Let me ask you this, does being with Byleth make you happy?”

“I don't believe I bear the right to such happiness,” he replied. “I must work every day so that upon my death, I have devoted my life to forming a peaceful kingdom full of joyful citizens.”

Shez rolled her eyes and threw herself back down on the pillow, “Ugh, you can be so dismal sometimes. Death shouldn’t be the first thing you think of when someone asks what makes you happy.”

Dimitri sighed, “Yes, perhaps you're right. But I find it difficult to consider anything else that may cause me joy.”

“Well, I can. It’s Byleth,” Shez retorted. “Byleth makes you happy. Therefore, you should ask Byleth to stick around after the war. Quit overthinking it. In fact, get out of my tent and go ask her right now.”

She threw a pillow at him, which he blocked with his hand. He laughed, “Okay, okay! When we have retaken Garreg Mach, I promise to consider what you have said.”

“Okay, but I’m holding you to it,” Shez warned.

He rose and said, “Thank you, my friend. I am lucky to have so many people watch out for my wellbeing.”

“Damn right you’re lucky,” Shez laughed.

Once he was gone, she nestled back down on her cot. The war would be over soon. Although there would be much to do, maybe Dimitri would finally hold on to the little bit of happiness he had found.

Notes:

I'm really touched by the support this story has gotten. Thank you all!

I messed around with the timeline a little to give them a short skirmish in Daphnel before going to Ailell. I'm going to try to wrap this up with one more chapter. Dimitri will have to choose between Byleth and Rhea. Hopefully, I can have it done by next week.

Chapter 5: The Merc's Guide to Chaos Theory Part I

Summary:

Faerghus and Leicester retake Garreg Mach. Rhea has a special request, and Dimitri must make a choice.

Notes:

Sometimes things have to get dark before they can get better.
Content warning: this chapter will get dark as Shez and Byleth try to find pulse their way to the best timeline. You may wish to wait until part 2 for things get better. I wanted to explore that Hopes Dimitri isn't living for what he believes in (yet).

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Everything happened so fast. Garreg Mach was theirs, Thales was dead, and Edelgard and her decimated forces were on the run back to Enbarr. Shez felt a sense of hope that she hadn’t felt since The Blue Lions welcomed her into their ranks two years ago. Rhea had even spotted Byleth during the final battle. Byleth complimented Rhea’s battle prowess, and Rhea responded, “And you are truly a wonder. You are definitely Jeralt’s child.” Shez smiled to herself and thought that surely Rhea and Jeralt could put aside whatever religious differences they had now that Byleth had helped her reclaim the monastery.

The Blue Lions spent the day after the battle celebrating. Shez even spotted Byleth and Dimitri holding hands a few times. Once the celebration was over, it was time to sit down with the Alliance and the Church of Seiros to discuss the next steps. Felix, Dedue, and Shez sat with Dimitri while Lorenz and Hilda sat on either side of Claude. Seteth sat next to Rhea and said very little.  Shez found the whole thing very tedious. Her mind wandered frequently.

As the talks finished, Rhea looked to Claude, “Duke Riegan, I hope that you will always remember the role the Church has played in your people’s affairs as you make decisions going forward.” She was smiling, but her eyes looked cold.

Claude’s smile also didn’t reach his eyes, “Certainly, Lady Rhea. Not a day went by - while the Empire destroyed our lands - that we didn’t feel a soaring sense of relief that you were tucked safely away from harm.”

Seteth glared at Claude, but Rhea didn’t respond. Instead, she looked to Dimitri, “Your Highness, you have given the Church so much, but I am afraid I must make one more request.”

“Of course, Lady Rhea,” Dimitri nodded. Claude looked at Hilda and made a face.

“It is a small request. In the course of combining our troops, a Church relic became mixed in with your soldiers’ equipment. I merely ask that a small group of my officers retrieve it.”

Seteth appeared confused. Dimitri seemed surprised as well, “Your Grace, I thought we could keep our family relics - at least until the war was completely over. We have not yet taken Enbarr.”

Rhea laughed, “Oh, I am sorry. I did not mean to confuse you. The Church trusts you with your family relics. This item is a trinket of great sentimental value, not a weapon. I am sure that you will not notice its absence.”

Dimitri smiled, “Of course, Your Grace.”

Claude clasped his hands together, “Yes, no need to ask for specifics. The Church asks, we give. This conversation hasn’t been disconcerting at all.” Lorenz kicked him.

Rhea maintained her smile as she rose to leave. Shez thought Seteth looked unusually perplexed. Shez chalked it up to Seteth’s perpetually stressed state. Maybe he would finally relax now that he was back at the monastery.

The Archbishop offered Dimitri, Claude, and their generals, the student dormitories for the night. Dimitri and Claude, however, declined. The sooner they could get to Enbarr, the sooner they could end the war. They did not want to give the Empire a chance to fortify Fort Merceus. Shez didn’t mind sleeping in her tent. It had been her home for the past two years. She went to sleep looking forward to the morning.

Shez awoke in the middle of the night to angry shouting. She jumped out of bed and raced outside. A group of Church soldiers appeared to have someone in custody. As Shez moved closer to them, she realized that the soldiers were holding Byleth. Byleth struggled against them and called out, “Somebody, please – they just dragged me out of my tent! There’s something in these cuffs.”

Dimitri heard the noise as well and rushed over, “What is the meaning of this? Stand down immediately!”

The soldiers didn’t budge, and Shez rushed to Dimitri’s side. “You have no right to take her. She is one of us,” Shez stated.

“Please, I believe we can all work together on this situation,” a calm voice said. Lady Rhea emerged from the surrounding darkness. She was smiling, but Shez felt immediately ill at ease.

Dimitri took a step back and changed his tone. “Lady Rhea, why are you trying to take Ms. Eisner away? She may have worked for the Empire, but she has been instrumental in helping us retake Garreg Mach and personally helped me defeat Thales.”

Rhea nodded, “Yes, there has been a terrible misunderstanding. This dear child has done nothing wrong. Remember earlier today when I told you that we needed our missing relic? She has carried it inside her for her entire life. She was meant to be the Goddess’s vessel. Unfortunately, her father took her away, and she has never learned her true power and purpose.”

“Why not just ask her to come with you? Why drag her out in the middle of the night?” Shez snapped. Dimitri raised his hand to silence her.

Felix, Sylvain, and Dedue had made their way out by this point.

Rhea stepped forward, “No doubt you have noticed her amazing strength. That is due to her having a very rare crest. We did not want her powers to accidentally activate and hurt anyone, so we used this method and special cuffs to dampen her abilities. We meant no harm.”

“Looks pretty harmful,” Sylvain observed.

“Let me go,” Byleth looked at Dimitri with pleading eyes.

Dimitri looked conflicted, “Lady Rhea, what will happen to her if she goes with you?”

Rhea beamed, “She will partake in a special ceremony. One that has not happened in centuries. There, she will receive a revelation from the Goddess herself.” Her tone turned ominous, “I would hope Your Highness would not jeopardize the longstanding relationship between the Church and Faerghus by going back on your word.”

Byleth struggled, “I don’t want a revelation. I want to stay with Jeralt. I want to help Dimitri. I don’t want any of this. Dimitri, you have to tell her to stop.”

“Don’t do it, Dimitri. Byleth belongs here,” Sylvain spoke up.

“We have worked so hard to save the Church. It seems a waste to get into a fight with it now over one person,” Felix looked away from Byleth as he said it. He crossed his arms, “Even if they are extraordinary.”

“I will stand by your decision. Whatever that may be,” Dedue said quietly.

Shez jumped in front of Dimitri. “Listen to me for once, Dimitri. Your life is your own. You don’t have to send Byleth away just to keep the Church happy. If it weren’t for you, Edelgard would have already destroyed it. You don’t owe her anything. If they really had her best interest in mind, they wouldn’t have pulled this stunt in the middle of the night and hoped you wouldn’t notice.”

Dimitri winced, “Lady Rhea, what will happen to Byleth after the ceremony? May she return to us?”

Rhea closed her eyes and sighed. When she opened her eyes, she smiled again, but Shez could tell her patience was wearing thin, “Once Byleth receives this revelation, she will give herself willingly to the Church. She will no longer require her past relationships.”

Felix and Dedue both grunted disapprovingly. Byleth pleaded, “You can’t do this to me. Dimitri, do something!”

“Yes, Your Majesty, do something,” a deep voice interrupted.

Jeralt Eisner stood with lance drawn. “It has been a long time, Jeralt,” Rhea said. Her tone was cold.

“Life is full of twists, Lady Rhea. The kid and I work for the King now. I will ask you nicely to let her go. This isn’t what Sitri would have wanted, and you know it.” He gripped the lance harder.

Dimitri swallowed hard, “I am sorry, Jeralt. But you know that the King of Faerghus is subject to the authority of the Archbishop.”

“Dimitri, no!” Byleth, Shez, and Sylvain shouted simultaneously.

Jeralt smirked, “The mistake was mine. I shouldn’t have trusted the word of a royal brat barely out of diapers.” He stepped towards Byleth with his lance drawn. “Come on kid, we’re getting out of – “

He didn’t get to finish because one of the Church soldiers ran his lance through Jeralt’s stomach. He collapsed to the ground. Shez opened her mouth to scream but no sound came out. Dimitri recoiled in horror. The other Church soldiers let go of Byleth, and she fell to her knees next to Jeralt. Sylvain brought a hand to his mouth and Felix turned away. Dedue knelt and closed Jeralt’s eyes.

Rhea bowed her head, “It is unfortunate, but very soon you will understand that you belong in the service of the Goddess. It is time to go, my child.”

Byleth looked up at the night sky and let out a primal scream that was so loud Shez felt it vibrate throughout her body. Then everything went dark, and Shez heard glass shatter

When Shez’s vision returned, she was back in her cot. She shot out of bed. What time was it? Were Jeralt and Byleth all right? She stepped out of her tent and saw a peaceful camp. Byleth must have reset time again. She had to act fast. Somehow, she had to save Byleth - but how was she was supposed to do that?

She didn’t have time to think anymore because she heard screaming coming from inside Byleth's tent. Two soldiers backed out as Byleth charged out of the tent with her sword drawn. Seems Byleth was waiting for them this time. Shez’s sword sprung from her hand, and she raced to Byleth’s side. “You can’t have her!” Shez cried.

Shez wasn’t sure fighting their way out was the best idea, but it definitely played to her strengths. The two Church soldiers immediately backed away from them and lowered their weapons. Shez hoped that Rhea might realize that Byleth wasn’t going to be dragged anywhere by force.

Dimitri, Dedue, Felix, and Sylvain heard the commotion and came running. This time Rodrigue stepped out as well. “Byleth, Shez: explain yourselves,” he said sternly.

“These soldiers want to take Byleth away to the monastery,” Shez blurted out. Byleth gasped and looked at her. The others looked confused. Shez didn’t have time to add to her statement before another voice chimed in.

“Please, my child. It is not nearly something so underhanded,” Rhea said calmly. She was back. Super.

“Please explain, Lady Rhea,” Rodrigue said. “It is not like the Church to act without consulting the Kingdom, especially during these difficult times.”

Shez tried very hard not to roll her eyes as Rhea once again explained how Dimitri had already agreed to all this earlier in the day, Byleth would take part in a special ceremony, everything would be fine, blah, blah. Byleth kept her sword raised the entire time. Once Dimitri started asking questions, Shez cut him off.

“Dimitri, if you let them take Byleth, things will go terribly wrong. You will never see her again. Is that what you want? Just tell Rhea that Byleth’s place is with you.”

Byleth looked pleadingly at Dimitri and said softly, “I want to stay with you.”

But Dimitri shook his head, “I’m sorry. It is not the King of Faerghus’s place to defy the Church.”

Shez and Sylvain both simultaneously groaned.

“It is a difficult choice, but I’m afraid it is the correct one,” Rodrigue said sadly.

Tears formed in Byleth’s eyes as she turned back to Rhea, “You will let me take Jeralt and go. We will not trouble you again, but we are leaving here tonight.”

Rhea signaled to the soldiers to act. Shez froze. What was she supposed to do now? Byleth said, “I don’t know you, and I certainly don’t belong to you.”

She lunged for Lady Rhea with her sword, but Rodrigue stepped in her way. Byleth’s blade went completely through his abdomen. Byleth ripped the sword out of Rodrigue and stepped back in horror. Felix howled and raced to his father’s side. “He’s gone,” he whispered.

Byleth was trembling and turned to Dimitri, “I never meant for this. I am so – “

She made a choking noise as Areadbhar was shoved directly through her stomach. Dimitri yanked it out of Byleth. His face was full of hatred. “I suppose it was too good to be true,” he said bitterly.

Rhea screamed, “Do you know what you have done? How dare you take what is mine!” She let out another scream and suddenly began to transform into a giant white dragon. The others ran for cover as Rhea began to destroy the entire camp. The night was filled with screams of terror. Shez finally snapped into action. She grabbed Byleth by the shoulders. Her eyes were still barely open, and blood was running out of her mouth.

“You have to break the glass again. Break the glass again!” Shez shouted. Byleth’s eyes started to shut as Shez continued to shake her.

Notes:

This was supposed to be one chapter, but it got very long! I had the idea to idea to write this part because Azure Gleam Dimitri seems very caught up with the role that the Church plays in Faerghus's history, especially during his conversation with Claude in the void. However, Azure Moon Dimitri seems somewhat disenchanted about the Church until Byleth starts running it.
Thank you for your continued support! The second half is written but needs to be fine-tuned. I hope to upload the finale on Wednesday.

The chapter title comes from my favorite Episode of Community: "Remedial Chaos Theory."

Chapter 6: The Merc's Guide to Chaos Theory Part 2

Summary:

Having seen the darkest timeline, Shez and Byleth try one last time to find a Golden Route.

this chapter will be much happier

Chapter Text

Suddenly everything went black, and Shez was relieved to hear the sound of glass shattering.

She awoke back in her tent and shot up. “Well, that sucked,” she said as she got out of bed.

Her mind raced and Shez realized that she knew next to nothing about timelines, but she was going to figure it out - dammit. Arval was gone, but out of habit, she began to pace and think aloud, “The one constant in both timelines was Dimitri screwing up. I have to convince Dimitri that he is his own person. He’s reasonable – except when he secretly buried all those bodies by himself, brought Miklan in without consulting anyone, surrendered to Cornelia unconditionally without giving us a chance to help him, tried to take the western lords on by himself, became strangely happy about killing his shadow in the void, and gave into Rhea twice despite his own wishes, and oh shit – Dimitri makes really stupid choices!”

She was losing her train of thought. She could straighten this out.

Shez stepped out of her tent to see Byleth sneaking away. The soldiers were nowhere in sight. She ran over and grabbed Byleth’s arm. Byleth tried to pull away, “I have to leave now. You know what will happen if I stay. Let me go.”

Shez shook her head and started dragging Byleth toward Dimitri’s tent. Byleth said, “We won’t make it in time. They will show up any minute.” Then her tone became sorrowful, “You heard him. He’s made his choice.”

“No!” Shez whisper-yelled. “He’s going to stop being an idiot, you’re staying, and Rhea is going to touch grass. It’s all going to work this time, I swear. I know I can talk some sense into him.”

Byleth paused, “Yes, let’s go talk to him. That is a perfect idea.”

Shez, however, had no idea what she was going to say, but she felt relieved that Byleth must have had something in mind. As they were running, Sylvain stumbled by and Shez blurted out, “Sylvain! Why are you here?”

He looked irritated, “I believe I don’t interrogate you when you go to the bathroom.”

Shez frowned, “Eeeew, no. I need a favor. There are going to be some soldiers here. We need you to stall them. Keep them away from Byleth as long as possible.”

Sylvain looked at both of them and his expression turned serious, “I will do my best.” Then he grinned, “I do my best lying in the middle of the night, after all.

Shez breathed a sigh of relief and held Byleth’s hand as they ran toward Dimitri’s tent. The light was on. Byleth must have sent them back a little further this time. Good. They flew inside. Dimitri sat at his desk while Felix sharpened his sword nearby. Both looked surprised, and Dimitri stood up. Out of breath, Shez began, “Dimitri – Byleth and I need– “

Byleth punched Dimitri in the face and then shoved him down. Oh, this is what she meant by talk. Shez decided from now on she would ask more follow-up questions. Also, they were very short on time. However, Dimitri did deserve to have his ass kicked, so she decided to let Byleth get a few more blows in. Felix looked over the blade of his sword, unconcerned.

“I trusted you,” Byleth cried as she kicked him in the stomach.

Dimitri looked over to Felix who simply shrugged, “Well, don’t look at me. I’m sure you did something to deserve it.”

“You should probably stay out of this, Felix. You haven’t had a stellar night either,” Shez warned.

Byleth took one look at Felix. Her green eyes practically glowed with rage. He shrank while muttering, “What did I even do?”

Out of breath, Byleth took a step back. Dimitri rose to his knees and then tried to stand up, but Shez pushed him back down.

“Byleth, I am sorry, but I don’t have the faintest clue what I have done that would make you this upset,” he said.

“The rod up your ass has a rod up its ass!” Byleth exclaimed. “I cared about you. I thought we were at least friends. I’ve never had feelings about anyone until I was around you. But I guess it didn’t mean anything to you.” She gave him one last light kick in the thigh. The hurt on her face was evident.

Dimitri shook his head, “I don’t understand. I care about you, Byleth.”

“We don’t have a lot of time. You’re about to do something stupid, really stupid.” Shez snapped.

“That tracks,” Felix said. Shez and Byleth glared at him, and he shrank back once more.

Dimitri cocked his head sideways at Shez. She sighed deeply, “Remember the stuff Rhea wanted back? Turns out it’s Byleth. She’s sending soldiers right now to take Byleth back to Garreg Mach for some ceremony. Byleth doesn’t want to go, but you give her over to Rhea because you think Rhea legitimizes your crown, or Loog, or some shit. You do this twice.”

“Twice? That isn’t possible. I have been here discussing strategy with Felix all evening.” Dimitri looked stunned.

“I’ve seen it myself, Dimitri.”

Byleth looked disapprovingly at Shez, but Shez threw up her hands, “I’m not smart enough to invent a story, so I’m just going to tell the truth. What I say in this tent stays between us. Remember how I’m the vessel that can reach into people’s chests and trap others in a void of eternal despair? Well, it turns out I’m not the only one here with strange powers. Rhea is actually a dragon with a bad temper, and Byleth can reset time if we get stuck in the darkest timeline – which we’ve been stuck in all night by the way. She’s saved your life at Ailell, but she’s been trying to fix your bad decisions all night, and you keep blowing it. Now she’s resorted to kicking your ass.”

“Dragons, voids, alternate timelines - why can’t we have normal battles like other countries? I bet Almyra doesn’t have to put up with this nonsense,” Felix set his sword down with a sigh.

“You believe us?” Shez asked.

“Rhea is a dragon seems suspicious, but Dimitri being a dumbass in every timeline sounds right. And I suppose it makes sense that you wouldn’t be the only one with weird abilities,” he shrugged.

“Then please, Byleth, tell me what happened. I chose Rhea over you from what it sounds, but that can’t be the worst part if you’re this angry.” He looked remorseful, and for a moment Shez almost felt bad for him. Almost.

Byleth closed her eyes, crossed her arms, and looked away. Shez put an arm around her, “It’s okay, tell him what happened. Maybe if he knows, he’ll make the right choice this time. And if he doesn’t, we can go back to punching him.”

Byleth took a deep breath, “The first time Jeralt tried to save me, and they killed him for intervening. The second time I accidentally killed Rodrigue trying to fight my way out, and – “ her voice began to shake - “you ran me through. I nearly died. You didn’t even give me a chance to explain. There was nothing but pure hate in your eyes.”

“And then Rhea got mad, turned into a dragon, and nearly killed everyone,” Shez added. She looked around, “Time is just about up. You can still fix this, Dimitri. Trust in yourself, trust in us, and trust in Byleth. Let Rhea be mad. Together we can even take a dragon. Just believe in us, Dimitri, and quit making these decisions all alone.”

Dimitri rose slowly and opened his mouth to speak. But before he could answer, Dedue opened the tent flap. “My apologies for the intrusion. Church soldiers have Sylvain surrounded. It seems to be about a woman, but he swears it isn’t his fault this time.”

They ran outside to find Sylvain standing with his hands raised, and the three all too familiar church soldiers pointing lances at him. He grinned when he saw Shez and company. “Well, hello everyone! These soldiers are looking for someone, and I tried to do my part by taking them all over our camp. Now they’re mad. No good deed goes unpunished, am I right?”

The soldier pointed at Byleth, “He is hiding that woman. He’s led us on a wild goose chase. Step away from Byleth Eisner, Your Majesty.”

“Lower your weapons,” Dimitri ordered. “This is an order from the King.” They lowered their weapons, and Dimitri ordered, “How dare you sneak into my camp and harass my people?

“There is no harassment. You already agreed to it this afternoon. Please turn her over immediately and we will leave at once.” The soldier’s tone was firm.

“Items, not people,” Dimitri corrected. “The word Lady Rhea used was ‘trinket.’ As you can see, Byleth Eisner is a person. Someone who has done nothing to warrant such ridiculous treatment.”

Dimitri put his arm protectively in front of Byleth.

“Please child, this is a happy occasion. There is no reason for us to be at odds,” Rhea said. She was standing serenely.

Great, here we go again, Shez thought.

“Lady Rhea,” Dimitri said. “Shez tells me that you wish to use Byleth as part of a special ceremony. I wonder why the Church would need to resort to taking her away in the middle of the night instead of simply asking her what she wishes to do.”

For once, Rhea looked shocked, and Shez couldn’t help but smirk. By this time, Rodrigue and Jeralt arrived. Jeralt looked pissed. Claude even showed up this time around. He seemed genuinely confused.

The shock passed from Rhea’s face, and she said, “I am surprised that Shez knows so much of our ways, considering she has so much in common with Thales and his allies.”

Shez’s smirk turned into a grimace. That woman/dragon sure knew how to hit low. That was fine, Shez didn’t have to play nice either. “Dimitri, she’s going to throw her weight around and try to get you to do whatever she asks. You’re the one with all the power here. You just got her special building back for her and you’re about to finish off the Empire. Your people may like her, but they love you.”

“Oh, this is about to get good,” Claude whistled.

Rhea took a deep breath, “When your father was murdered, I was the one who recognized you as his rightful successor, even though you were just a boy. Many thought you were too damaged from the experience to ever rule, especially after that messy rebellion in the west. I was most disturbed when accounts of your behavior reached my ears. Yet, I gave you the chance to grow and learn from the experience, instead of giving Rufus the throne.”

Dimitri winced. Rhea continued, “And then when Rufus tried to take the throne two years ago, you ran straight to me for assistance.”

Dimitri’s arm started to fall from guarding Byleth, “And now, you would deny the Church, the very entity that has legitimized every ruler of Faerghus, the chance to hear from the Goddess herself once more?” Rhea’s tone was getting more threatening. “As part of the royal bloodline, your life has never for a moment belonged to you. Not even at the instant of your birth. And the Kingdom has always submitted to the will of the Church.”

Dimitri’s shoulders sank, but Byleth looked at him, “She’s wrong. It doesn’t have to be that way. Live for what you believe in.”

Dimitri gasped as he looked at her, “Could one such as I truly hope for such a life? Do I have the right to live for myself?”

“What makes you so special? Of course, you can live for what you believe in,” Byleth huffed.

“Yeah, stop making things complicated,” Shez chimed in.

Dimitri looked down at the ground for a moment, then he raised his head, “The Eisners are under my protection. You will not take them from here.”

Rhea seemed unfazed and nodded, “Fine. You make keep her until Enbarr. Then you will turn her over to the Church. She has a Divine Purpose. You may not rob her or Fodlan of it.”

He shook his head, “No, she is not mine to give you. She is not a thing - she is a person. A person who happens to mean a great deal to me.”

“What was that last part?” Jeralt asked.

Byleth turned and looked at Dimitri. There was barely a smile across her face.

“You can’t do this!” Rhea cried. “I will make sure the Kingdom regrets defying the Church of Seiros!”

Claude stepped forward, “No, you won’t. The Kingdom and Leicester are allies now. The Empire is almost gone. We’ve all existed without the Church for the past two years. You need His Kingliness and me more than we need you. Now, are you going to respect Dimitri when he says you can’t take this girl, or are you going to defy the King of Faerghus and the Duke of Leicester?”

Rhea’s eyes narrowed, and Shez worried that she was about to go full dragon mode on them again. “You two are just more failures. To threaten me is futile. The Church of Seiros will raise its entire army against you until you have both been punished! Then I can appoint rulers that have the proper respect for the authority of the Archbishop.”

“No, you won’t, Rhea,” another voice interrupted. Seteth approached the crowd holding a book. Rhea was stunned.

“Seteth, you have no idea what is at stake here. Return to the Monastery at once,” she snapped.

He shook his head, “I am afraid I can not do that. You have gone too far, Lady Rhea. I suspected something was amiss during our meeting this afternoon. I knew that I had kept track of every one of the Church’s possessions, so there was no need for you to make such a request. I searched your quarters and found this.”

“My old journal!” Jeralt exclaimed. “Wait, you read my journal?”

“Can I read it?” Claude asked. Seteth glared at him.

“Seteth, do not dare,” Rhea threatened.

“His journal does not tell the full story, but I believe that I have pieced it together. You have been trying to resurrect the Goddess, have you not? And this girl, Byleth, is your latest attempt.”

“That isn’t true, her mother and I loved her from the day we found out Sitri was pregnant,” Jeralt stated.

Seteth looked at Jeralt, “I know. However, Lady Rhea saved her life but only because she could make her the Goddess’s vessel. If Rhea had been successful, Byleth would no longer exist, and the Goddess would speak through her body.

Everyone gasped, and Dimitri wrapped both arms around Byleth, “Lady Rhea – you would have erased Byleth’s existence? That is monstrous!”

Rhea looked both furious and defeated. “I see that there is no reasoning with you all. Very well, you do as you please. However, my child, if you ever wish to know your true purpose – “

“Won’t be necessary,” Byleth interrupted. “I could not possibly care less.”

Rhea forced a smile, “Well there is nothing more to be said. I wish you the best as you take Enbarr and all that follows. Come Seteth, it is late, and we have much to talk about in the morning.”

She turned and left with her soldiers. Seteth looked at Byleth, “I am truly sorry for the way that you have been treated tonight. Rhea – well Rhea has suffered many losses, and I think it has affected her judgment.”

“She should step down, then,” Claude replied. “Allow someone more open-minded to run things.”

“I hope it will not come to that. I promise to keep a closer eye on her.” He bowed to Byleth, “She will trouble you no further, Miss Eisner.”

Now that she was gone, Dimitri dropped to one knee. Sylvain excitedly whispered to Shez, “Is he about to propose?”

“He better be preparing to grovel for forgiveness,” Shez whispered. Sylvain looked confused.

“Byleth, I am truly sorry for the despair that I have caused you tonight. I am constantly doubting my ability to rule and also the strength of my friends. I cannot tell you how sorry I am for my behavior. There is no apology I could offer that would be sufficient – “

“Damn – what did he do?” Sylvain whispered.

“Long story, weird night, just be quiet,” Shez whispered back.

Byleth looked down at him, “How do you intend to atone? How can I know you won’t just toss me aside because it’s convenient?”

“I realize words alone are not enough to repent, but I fear they are all I have at the moment. Before I met you, I lived only for revenge for the fallen. Then you came, and for the first time in my life, I felt actual happiness. But I did not think myself a worthy king for my people and was afraid they would not accept me without Rhea’s blessing. I did not trust in you, the wisdom of my friends, or myself. I have realized tonight my life is my own. It belongs to no one else, and it is high time that I started living for what I believe in. And I believe in you, Byleth. I would be grateful if you chose to remain after all that you have seen tonight, but I will understand if you wish to take your father and leave.”

“Kid – what did he do? Should I be kicking his royal ass right now? I feel like I missed out on something that can be solved by kicking his ass.” Jeralt crossed his arms and gave Dimitri a death glare.

Byleth shook her head, “No, I already did.”

Jeralt looked around proudly, “That’s my girl. Just let me know if he deserves round two.”

Dimitri remained on one knee. Byleth looked down at him, “Technically, you didn’t do all the shit I’m mad at you about, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. I’ve never had friends before, only allies. Then I met you and you seemed different from anyone I ever met. And then you just threw me away. And I think it hurt so much because I might actually lo- ” She threw her hands up, “Ugh! This is so hard. I’ve never felt like this before. You are so damn frustrating.” She extended her hand, “Get off the ground, that can’t be comfortable.”

He reached out and took her hand, and she helped him to his feet. They both looked down at their hands, still joined. She squeezed it, “I forgive you – this time,” she said softly.

He bent down and kissed her hand. Then he wrapped his other hand around hers and said, “I swear on my father’s lance to spend the rest of my days atoning for my poor choices tonight. You will be safe and protected. Your father as well. I have never felt about anyone the way I feel about you, and I am eternally grateful that we met that day.”

“I am glad we met, too,” Byleth said. Dimitri leaned in and kissed her on the lips. They continued to kiss, and Sylvain whistled.

“Okay, okay, that is enough. I don’t care if he’s King,” Jeralt said with a laugh. “All of you kids need to go to bed – in your separate tents. We still have a war to win.”

“Thank God someone is finally making sense,” Felix huffed as he walked away.

Sylvain put his arms around both Byleth and Dimitri, “Goodnight you two. I’m not still totally sure what’s happening, but I am glad you are with us, Byleth.”

Shez went back to her tent and collapsed on the bed. Living through three separate nights was exhausting. She heard a voice ask, “Can I come in?”

“Sure, I may fall asleep though,” she answered.

Byleth stepped in quietly and closed the tent flap. “Thank you, Shez – for everything tonight.

Shez shrugged, “I think the ass-kicking had more of an effect than anything I said.”

Byleth laughed.

Shez grew serious, “I know we were on opposite sides, but you are part of us now. You are my friend. I won’t let anything change that, and I’ll make sure the Blue Lions will always have your back.”

Byleth broke out into the biggest smile Shez had seen from her. “Thank you. I like it here. Sleep well, my friend.”

“You too,” Shez replied. Byleth opened the tent flap and looked leftwards.

“Hey,” Shez said. “Your tent is to the right. Where are you going?”

Byleth turned around and smirked, “Jeralt doesn’t have to know everything.”

Shez burst out laughing and Byleth tiptoed out. As Shez’s eyes closed, she thought about how things now were finally set right. The war was practically won, Dimitri and Claude were now close allies, Rhea would back off, and Dimitri and Byleth had found each other.

Fodlan’s future was looking pretty bright.
