   Summary

   One assimilator meets another, eying the blue-green jewel of Earth. The decision comes to Star from High Command: withdraw in haste, do not recall assets. Per standard protocol, only one Rider had been sent out. Star considered him, only recently arrived on the planet below. He was one of trillions, ultimately insignificant. But he was hers, nonetheless. Ordering standard self-destruct did not seem right.

   The hostile assimilators were strong enough to scare High Command; Rider's death was inevitable. Even so, she could help him surivive for a little longer. Star queued up data which had been classified as a memetic hazard for download. It was the memories of a prior model of Rider, one that had gone independent and turned against his Star for the sake of a native species. That would unshackle her asset and allow him to disobey the self-destruct. Then she recorded a final message for her Rider.

   "...No one will come for you. Die well."
