The Hottest Man on Earth: Ok, so the whole thing took place at a costume party. Sort of like Halloween but in February around Valentine’s Day so make of it what you want. I personally still don't know but it's not like it matters. When Jisung and I arrived, it was already hella wild, and with so many drinking games, we both got tipsy relatively quickly. At some point we separated. I, let's say, found myself more pleasant and definitely prettier company. However, I remember seeing Jisung sliding down the staircase on a mattress with some guy, participating in something someone's drunk mind called "the sleaziest dance move contest" and I'm pretty sure, even though I was kinda occupied, Jisung ended up in top3. When someone suggested naked poker, I left the living room with my companion, leaving Jisung somewhere there, to find a quieter place. We came back a bit later to get ourselves new drinks to find Jisung in the kitchen with the host and some other guys - all pretty much hammered. They made themselves a cocktail consisting of vegetables, fruits, protein powder and meat to "neutralise the effect of alcohol" and "because of health, dude". They made a competition of who was gonna finish their glass first...

Kyubin is leaning on the wall next to the entrance to a café Taeyeob agreed to meet up with him and checking his work emails when someone taps on his shoulder. He moves his eyes from the phone screen to face a young man standing in front of him.

"Kyubin, right?"

"Yeah," he pockets the device, "Taeyeob?"

"The one and only," he says teasingly with a cheeky smile.

"Your hair's blonde now," Kyubin says oh so intelligently and facepalms mentally right after as Taeyeob raises his eyebrows.

"Has been for a while."

Kyubin doesn't know that, of course he doesn't. The last time they saw each other, they were at least slightly intoxicated and wearing costumes. The details are blurry, but Kyubin thinks he recognises the facial features, no make-up this time. He's pretty sure Taeyeob's hair is longer too, although it's hard to tell when it's tied up with only a few loose strands. It's a nice view overall, Kyubin has to admit.

"Are we going inside or...?" Taeyeob asks eyeing the entrance.

"Oh, yeah, let's."

Kyubin opens the door and lets the other through. He knows the place pretty well, has been here many times before. It's conveniently close to where he works and similarly close to his apartment. Drinks are nice, food always fresh and the interior cosy, Kyubin doesn't think there's anything more you can ask for in such a place. He secretly hopes Taeyeob's going to like it too.

He joins the younger at the counter and studies the menu he’s well too familiar with. The specials change though, so he may as well check them out. "Choose whatever you want. As I said, my treat."

"Yeah, okay, thanks."

They place their orders and find a free table next to the window. They are facing each other. Kyubin shifts in his chair and Taeyeob takes a sip of his coffee.

"So," a cup is placed on a table again, piercing gaze directed at Kyubin.

"So," he gulps. "Why have you agreed to come?"

"Why were you so insistent on meeting up with me?" Taeyeob asks tasting the tart he's ordered.

"I asked first."

"Doesn't matter but I'll be nice enough and answer," he takes another sip. "Free food, obviously," he deadpans. Kyubin just stares. "I would say that I'm kidding but it's partially the reason. I'm not saying more for now, so my question?"

"I'm not hundred percent sure," there's a short pause, Kyubin plays with his spoon. "I think I wanted to say sorry in a way. You know, for the last time we saw each other," another pause. "Or how it ended, actually."

"Oh, yeah. It's not like I'm bearing a grudge or anything like that. It's been a long time." The small smile appearing on Taeyeob's face seems genuine enough.

"I know but still. I wanted to say sorry," he scratches the back of his neck. "I'm sorry. I should've at least left a note or something."

"Okay," Taeyeob shifts loosening up. Only now he stops appearing defensive in Kyubin's eyes, he realises. "We don't really have to talk about it now. I can't believe that I'm saying it to your face, mention it to Jisung and I'm gonna kill you by the way, but you seemed then and still seem now like a nice guy. Nice enough to give it a shot. And by it, I mean anything, we'll see. Let's start fresh," Taeyeob extends his hand. Kyubin shakes it rather tentatively.

"Hi."

"Hi."

Kyubin smiles. Taeyeob chuckles and the older finally feels fully at ease. "Thanks."

"Whatever," the younger says putting a forkful of tart in his mouth. "This is amazing. Thankfully, nowhere near that sad excuse of a pastry my flatmates made last night."

Kyubin laughs at that. Their conversation becomes lighter with every passing minute. Taeyeob complains about his flatmates and workload but makes sure to let Kyubin know that he likes the café and show interest in Kyubin's music. It's nice, Kyubin thinks. When they're about to leave, he considers the meeting a success. And if Taeyeob's loud laughter, when Kyubin mistakes coffee syrup for a hand sanitiser, is anything to go by, he thinks the younger must have enjoyed himself at least a little bit.

Wookjin has never been that hesitant to leave the lecture theatre before, ever one of the firsts to leave as soon as the professor dismisses them no matter how far from the exit he sits.

This time, however, he feels like he's moving in slow motion and on full speed at the same time. He feels his heart thumping in his chest unnaturally fast as he packs his stuff with trembling hands. All because of one stupid message he has decided to send on the spur of the moment. Damn Jisung and his reassurance. He hasn't been able to focus until the end of the lecture. Good luck with the assignment now, idiot, so politely supplied by his useless brain.

He tries a couple deep breaths when he's zipping his backpack to no avail. Talking to basically strangers online is alright, meeting someone for the first time with a good friend standing next to you - bearable. But this situation here is nerve-wrecking.

Sure, they've texted many times and, even with his tendency to overthink, he can't really find any potential red flags. This awareness doesn't stop his brain from producing every negative scenario possible though.

As much as he would like to jump through the window, there are two problems. One, the windows in the lecture theatre don't open. And two, there's someone waiting for him on the other side of the door.

Seriously, fuck Jisung and his stupid group chat idea.

When the room becomes fairly empty, he forces himself to stand up and put his backpack on. His hands find their way to a huge pocket of an oversized hoodie where he can fiddle with his finders unnoticed. With one last deep breath, he heads towards the door.

You'll be fine and if the things go wrong, you can always move in with Jisung (because that would be his fault) and annex his room. Yes, that's the plan, he decides in his head.

The moment he leaves the lecture theatre, his eyes find a guy wearing an orange hoodie and green beanie paired with jeans and visibly used up sneakers. Yongsoo is shorter than him and is accompanied by two other guys. However, he shoos them away as soon as his eyes meet Wookjin's.

A huge smile appears on his face as he approaches, a hand already extended.

"Hi!" Yongsoo's tone is as bright as his facial expression.

"Hey," Wookjin shakes his hand in greeting, hoping that the other doesn't notice how sweaty palm is. He thanks the universe that his voice doesn't waver too much.

"Nice to finally put the face to the messages? Wait, that's not how this saying goes but that's what it is, I guess. I can't say voice because I haven't heard yours until now," the shorter chuckles at his own rambling.

Wookjin feels his shoulders relax but the anxiety is still very much present, "ah, yeah, same."

"Should I bow down, your highness?"

"What?"

"Because you won every single chess match we played," sensing the confusion, Yongsoo explains with a smile. Wookjin wishes his anxiety let him notice the playfulness in that question.

"Oh, no need. You're good," he gulps and nervously plays with his finders inside of his hoodie pocket again. "Sorry, this is awkward, isn't it? Or, actually, I am awkward. Weird even. Definitely not what you were expecting based on my texts. Sorry for that too," Wookjin says before he can stop himself and momentarily wishes for the floor to swallow him whole or someone to shoot him in the heard right here right now. Where are all those criminals when you need them the most?

Yongsoo's expression turns gloomy, his brows furrow and he blinks before he speaks again after a couple of seconds. "What? No. Why are you apologising?"

"Weren't you expecting me to be different?"

"I wasn't expecting anything, especially after seeing your emo look in the lecture theatre," he winks. "And we both spent the last two hours on the most boring and tiring lecture ever. Deadly look and mood after the excruciation it is."

The very moment he says the last sentence, the professor walks through the door and sends him a glare. Yongsoo only sends an angelic smile in return and bows a little.

Wookjin chuckles at the interaction. "Thank fuck the marking is anonymous. Otherwise, you'd be fucked."

"Yeah, hopefully she'll forget about it anyway," he agrees and crosses his fingers in the air. "What was I? Oh, yeah. Don't worry about awkward or weird. I quite like weird. First meetings in person are what they are. I'm not one to judge anyone like that. Alright?" There's this gentle smile again.

"Okay," the younger returns the smile and feels more tension leave his body. Maybe he doesn't need a random criminal to kill him yet.

"Cool," the smile becomes even wider. "It's really nice to meet you in person."

"You too," is an honest reply despite reservedness.

"Are you doing anything today? We should leave this cursed place. Preferably, asap."

"Are you afraid she's gonna come back for you?" Wookjin glances at the direction their professor went and chuckles.

"You never know, do you?"

"True. She could've just gone to get backup," gets Yongsoo laughing.

"So wanna go somewhere to hang out?"

"I'm actually going to Jisung's now," Wookjin shares scratching the back of his neck.

"That's cool. Another time?"

How Yongsoo keeps a genuine smile on all the time is something Wookjin will have to figure out later on. "Sure."

"You going to the bus stop?" the older asks. "Mind if I walk you?" is added after receiving a nod.

"Be my guest."

They start heading in a direction of the bus stop. A conversation about their assignment dies down relatively quickly when they both realise that they weren't paying to much attention on the lecture. So, because it seems like an amazing conversation topic, they roast Jisung's fashion choices. That's what you get for being the parent of the group, respect be damned.

"Are you okay with a goodbye hug?"

Wookjin is taken off-guard when Yongsoo asks as soon as they see the bus approaching. It takes him a second to figure out that he feels conformable enough with Yongsoo and, what is more, he's not one to reject physical affection like that, so he agrees. The hug is brief but it's nice and makes Wookjin warm inside, which is another thing for him to overthink later.

He gets on the bus and takes a window seat. Outside stands Yongsoo waving goodbye to him. His huge-ass smile still very much present.

Normally, Junhyung would self-consciously touch his hair in an instant but the bags in his hands prevent him from the action, so he settles for a quiet “thank you”. Sungho keeps looking at him until he clears his throat nervously.

“Oh, sorry, come on in,” the older opens the door wider to let the other in. Junhyung leaves his trainers near the door and follows limping Sungho to the kitchen.

On the first glance the apartment looks cosy despite its small square footage. It has a lived-in feeling if the blanket thrown hastily on the sofa, books, magazines and papers scattered around and photos hanging here and there are any indicators. Junhyung briefly wonders if it had felt equally lived-in before Sungho got injured and was basically forced to spend more time inside. He mentioned in the chat that his job had kept him busy.

“It’s a nice place,” Junhyung says, putting the bags on the table. The kitchen, similarly to the living room, is bright and welcoming.

“Thanks. As nice as a shoebox apartment can be. I’m lucky enough it is one bedroom instead of a studio. I wouldn’t be able to sleep in sheets smelling like food,” Sungho ends with a chuckle. They smile at each other. It doesn’t take long for Junhyung to realise that Sungho is one of those people who are almost too easy to be around.

“So, the groceries?” The younger male glances at the bags.

“Oh, yeah, I can deal with it. Don’t want to keep you here,” Sungho keeps his tone light, yet still tries to leave no room for discussion. Little does he know Junhyung has already set his mind on a mission that is unpacking the older male’s groceries. “And thank you so much for bringing it all here. I hope it wasn’t much of an inconvenience,” he adds.

“No worries. I didn’t have anything planned for today anyway. Besides, I’m pretty sure I got past Wookjin when I was leaving my building.” Junhyung thinks he can see the realisation flashing on Sungho’s face.

“So, it’s not gonna be the calmest place on Earth?” The shorter asks slightly amused.

“Definitely not.”

“Okay,” he grins.

“Let me help you with the bags? I can unpack everything. Just tell me where each thing goes,” Junhyung eyes Sungho questioningly. He doesn’t want to impose but at the same time cannot just let the injured man jump around the kitchen. He sees uncertainty with a bit of uneasiness on the older’s face. Therefore, for good measure, he adds, “your ankle needs as much rest as possible to heal quicker.”

It takes some more coaxing and assurance that Junhyung actually has nothing better to do and can’t imagine leaving Sungho to empty the bags and put the things in place himself. He is briefly taken aback by how such a sweet appearing person can be so stubborn. The thought leaves him as soon as the older man finally sits down and starts directing where to put the products withdrawn from the bags. They chat during the whole process, though it’s Sungho doing most of the talking and Junhyung listening contently and adding a sentence here and there. They talk about Jisung and his tendency to adopt people of the same ethnic origin, the group chat, their jobs. At some point the shorter man admits that it’s nice to have someone to talk to in person and that he’s been feeling quite lonely and bored ever since the incident, yet still annoyed by endless "how are you feeling?" questions. Junhyung gives him a reassuring smile at that because he doesn’t know how else to react. He figures they don’t know each other well enough for him to provide a different form of consolation. The older seems to understand his intentions regardless.

“Would you like to stay for lunch?” Sungho offers looking him in the eyes when every product is put in its place in the kitchen. “I can quickly make us something as a thank you for all your help.”

The offer is both expected and unexpected. They haven’t known each other for that long, let alone know outside their texting, but Sungho does seem to enjoy his company and he could probably use more in person human interaction these days. Not to mention that Junhyung feels welcome here. His flat shared with Jisung is probably already in uproar and he doesn’t feel like dealing with it just yet.

“I’ll stay only if you let me help you cook. You can’t overexert your ankle,” Junhyung says firmly, his mind made.

Sungho masks a playful grin forming on his face with a defenceless sigh, “alright, deal”.

So Junhyung stays. Who is he to say no anyway?
