Between bullets and mad men
At this point in her storyline, even Olivia could admit that, from observation alone, regardless of being forced to actually experience any of it, her life looked and, frankly, sounded like a work of badly written fiction, the kind people could hardly believe even existed outside of fanciful stories passed on from generation to generation, each time told in an even more grandiose, and therefore far from the truth manner, which, sincerely, sign her up, at least in a true work of fiction, she would be guaranteed, at the very least, a smidge of tattered, hopeful, chance of a good ending – if not a good plot at all, as evidenced by any fairytale involving women ever written in the history of mankind, adding eternally to her already, to put it candidly, fucked up, terrible background.
Looking back on past insufferable years, and ignoring anything that people thought about her as a being, those who had never actually held a single polite conversation with the oldest daughter of a terrible set of parents, clearly spelling trouble (specially to the girl herself), if nothing else, due to the fact that, besides being fully aware that they had no business staying together if not for their spotless, loving image, that same set of god-awful parents decided that adding a second kid to their already crumbling family would be a great idea, thus putting their young daughter fully in charge of the baby, not by choice, really, with an absolute lack of common sense and through sheer lack of a shred of conscience; being a child was easy, not because she was born rich, if in some aspects it was a bonus, in others it made nothing easier, far from it, really, anyone who though that growing up (granted, with a solid gold, diamond encrusted, spoon, Olivia could not consider herself blind to the reality people lived in at this point) in full display to a whole world of dangerous, famished predators waiting for that millisecond of distraction to tear you apart would be any easier than, say, having to work to pay their bills; it was because by the predictability of her never changing life, she always knew what was necessary to do, and simply be, at any point in time, always. As far as curveballs go, getting shipwrecked in Lian Yu was easy enough to get used to (if you discounted the danger, hunger, pain, emotional distress and the constant weakness, most terrifying feeling of all, that one, of course).
Then she met Slade, fight or flight instincts warring inside, all she knew was anger, body screaming in agony, blood dripping in thin rivulets down her skin, long dirtied by everything she touched in this god forsaken, cursed island, rumbling unknown voice and a knife at her throat; she woke up tied to a chair, proceeded to hurt herself in a frankly pathetic bid to escape her bindings, then, as the obvious next best choice, punched that smug looking – and, she will never admit out loud, handsome – face.
It was the first time Olivia saw that flicker of something else in his dark eyes, even if it never reached his expression; she would later realize, after months, that whatever it was could be attributed to respect, alas, it should not be possible to read the man that easily, even if her instincts and intuition rarely missed the mark, he was a soldier, and therefore excelled at hiding whatever it was he felt necessary.
Time passed in strange ways in the island, sometimes it rushed by, sometimes it seemed that among the grey fog time itself became stone, in that way months passed, opportunities revealed themselves and promptly were lost, Olivia would admit that most of them by her own doing, as the saying is most likely right, no good deed goes unpunished. Now, with her knees to the rough ground, the worst of feelings made itself present (even worse than the rampant heartbreak and jealousy when Slade left her for brave, fierce, older and wiser Shado, good times indeed), weakness, again, the most prevalent fact in her life after getting fucking shipwrecked – Thank you, Tommy, yachts do fucking suck -, even as it shattered her very soul beyond repair, she doubted it would ever heal, certainly after the situation she found herself in, and the resolve that presented itself.
She would admit to being weak, it was a fact of life, but as she kneeled on the rocky wet ground, Sara and Shado both desperately looking at Olivia, neither of them crying, as would seem likely in a situation such as this, simply… waiting; as Olivia’s decision rang in her own ears, she would never let weakness win once more. Looking up at Ivo, and the arm deceptively at rest by his side, loaded gun in hand, reminding herself of all she had lost, the little she managed to find and hold onto when her world ceased to exist, Slade dead by her doing, it all would only serve to strengthen her idea.
“Ten seconds, Sweetheart! Tik tok, time is running out!” Ivo smiled in front of her, the madness in his eyes spilling out onto his face, smile manic and terrifying.
And she knew what she had to do, truly, now was not the right time to ponder any longer, she couldn’t think about what Sara represented, although she could point it out without a thought in a heartbeat: home, Laurel, Mom, even dad, Thea, Tommy, safety, a life she no longer had but longed for. She couldn’t think about Shado, either: the beginning, survive, Yao Fei, Slade, family, acceptance and love. And her? What did she truly have? Now? She lost the man she loved, she lost her family, and maybe, in the path, she lost herself.
“Five seconds girl, I’m going to shoot both of them, you already know that, come on!” his grating voice screeched through her already overwhelmed mind, once again bringing it to a halt.
“Wait!” the scream was as quiet as it possibly could be, as if her voice, too, decided to leave her, “Wait… Why shoot them? I am the one who you want to kill anyway, so why not? I have inconvenienced you at every turn since your boat approached this place!” Looking up she found Ivo’s gaze, studying her. Time to put on a show, ladies and gentlemen, time to be the rich and spoiled rotten girl in a Mean Girls-esque movie everyone accused Olivia Queen of being.
“Really, everyone around this clearing, nice place right? Is already aware that you won’t be happy just killing one of them, I suspect including yourself, very self aware of you, by the way, really, marvelous job you have been doing until now, congratulations. You want me to suffer, you want to destroy me, but to be fair, I already lost everything I actually cared about, if you truly think that killing any of them would affect me? The blonde traitor sold me out to you, which, bravo Sara, you got me back for bringing your middle class ass on what should have been the trip of your life, which is sad, if no one told you; the other one showed up and I found myself single again. You bore me.”
Ivo seemed puzzled, if amused, looking at all of us with an air of superiority that simply did not belong; Shado and Sara were both crying now, struggling to get to me, and the creep smiled, I knew I was crying, too, the wet feeling on my cheeks hard to miss when the cold wind touched my face, but still I stuck to the smirk I had painted on my face, the one I used to practice in the mirror back home.
“You are absolutely right!” he cackled, sending a shiver of disgust down my spice “And surprisingly good at reading the room! What an enjoyable surprise! Well, it does seem that I get my wish!” he smiled again, only this time… This time a mirror of when he explained the mirakuru, falling firmly in the spectrum between crazy and unhinged insanity. “Oh, but for these two I would have been so kind! A quick shot, straight in the head, right between the eyes, fast and painless, I gather, but you! You don’t deserve painless, sweetheart! Not even the mercy of a quick death!”
The truth is, Liv couldn’t hear the discharge of the gun, muffled as it seemed to her ears, but she did hear the screams. Sara, her familiar voice closer than any other, Shado, too, was screaming, despair clear in her voice… and the goons, strangely frantic footfalls sounding louder around them than before; Why? The confusion was soon followed by the distinct sound of contact of flesh on flesh, cracking bones, and the blood dripping from my own mouth, every second in increasing amounts, drops hitting the ground, and she couldn’t help but feel cold, and the warmth of somebody’s arms wrapping around a failing body, holding it up even as it gave away, energy quickly fading, with blonde hair, lighter and straighter than Liv’s ever were, swaying in front of her bleary eyes.
“I’m so… so sorry, Sara…” the blood made the words wet sounding, funnily enough, the tears on her face streaming a lighter red down her neck. “I didn’t mean what I said before” came as a rasping, drowning whisper “Does it hurt you as much as it hurts me?” Sara cried, sobbing and choking on air, a trembling hand smoothing hair from the pale face of her childhood friend like the softest of caresses, as if afraid it would hurt Liv more to simply touch, bringing the golden locks Slade wouldn’t allow Olivia to cut again, after witnessing how much it pained her to do so the first time, when there was little else she could do to save the waves from the mess they became after quite some time on the island, that he used to carefully braid back every day without any prompting so it wouldn’t be in Liv’s face.
“It does, so much!” Sara answered, shaky smile interrupted by the sobs she couldn’t hold back anymore, face coming to rest on the shoulder closest to her body.
“ ‘m so sorry.” Soft breaths becoming shallower as the minutes passed, as both girls held onto each other.
“You don’t need to be! You saved us, again, like you always did, the way you always do, we love you so much, Ollie.” The younger’s tears joined the pool already forming around them both, falling on the leaves, soon mixing with the increasing amount of blood spreading on the dark earth.
“Will they be waiting for me?”
“I am sure they will.”
Notes:
Did you like it? Let me know! A little love doesn't hurt! Or a kudo.
