It was very late, and Aichi was unable to sleep. He felt tired, but his eyes wouldn’t close. He tossed, he turned, before laying on his back and staring up at the ceiling. He sighed. Forget it. He conceded. Even if it was a school night, he wasn’t going to get any sleep if he mentally kept screaming at himself to sleep. Sitting up, he scooted back to lean against the wall. Staring in the darkness, he looked around, till his eyes landed on Kamui’s sleeping figure.
Tangled up in a mess of blankets, he slept soundly. Probably dreaming about his crush at school.
“Aichi?”
“Aughh!”
Kamui jumped up in his spot, groping around for his phone. Finally a light flashed in Aichi’s face.
“Auughhh, do you have to shine that right in my face?”
“Well- I thought you fell over or something! You scared me!”
“I didn’t know you were awake! You have idea how terrifying that was, I’m just sitting here minding my own business and then this giant sleeping mass talks to me?”
“Okay I’m not fat.” Kamui rolled his eyes.
“Never said you were… Could lay off the almond pastry though.”
“Well, lay off the cupcakes then Mr. dancer!”
They both stared at each other for a moment, before breaking out into giggles. Kamui finally detangled himself from his bed and went over to Aichi. He let himself fall into the boy’s frame, wrapping his arms around his waist. He sighed, burying his face into Aichi’s chest.
“I can’t sleep either.” He muttered.
“How come?” Aichi asked. Kamui shrugged.
“Don’t know. Just can’t.”
“Well, that’s okay. I guess we’ll just be tired at school tomorrow.” Aichi said, turning to the window.
“Hey Aichi?”
“Yeah?”
“… Will you… always be here?”
Aichi stopped running his fingers through Kamui’s hair, looking down. “Well, yeah of course. What makes you think I wouldn’t?”
Kamui shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess because Kai and Misaki are gonna graduate soon. Then it’ll just be us. They keep pushing us to get our own separate rooms but- I don’t want my own room. I want to share a room with you.”
“Hm. Well, they may have a point.” Aichi mused, even if he wanted to disagree on the inside. “They’re just trying to make sure we have our own identities outside each other. That’s all.”
“What’s that mean?”
“That just means they want us to be able to function on our own, without needing to sleep in the same room each other. Though… I think it’ll be fine, every now and then.” He leaned closer to Kamui’s ear.
“And what they don’t know won’t hurt them.”
Kamui giggled. “You’re right. I guess I’m just gonna feel, really weird without them.”
“Yeah, it’ll hurt at first for sure. But it’ll pass.” Aichi noted. “Then we’ll have our adventures at college. We can go to the same one if that makes you feel better.”
“Yeah! Let’s do that!”
Aichi smiled, leaning back on the wall. Sometimes he felt that too. An inner deep sadness, thinking all the happy memories they had in this tiny apartment. They struggled for money sometimes. Not everything was always ideal. But he loved his family. And some selfish part of him wished it could always remain like this. Unmoving. Unchanging. Aichi knew better though. People grew and changed, came and went and their brother and sister would soon start their adventure at college.
He sighed. He didn’t want to communicate those deeper feelings to Kamui right this moment. Nor did want to drive into that rabbit hole of what the future held for any of them, school, education, marriage or children or otherwise He was in a better mood now. .
He’d have to feel satisfied with this for now.
“Kamui?”
A snore came. Ah. He was already asleep now. Aichi sighed, leaning over him. He supposed he should sleep too now.
