Different Yet, So Very Similar

Summary:

An average day of DigDug's life.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

DigDug laid in bed, dreading the few minutes he had left to stay asleep. Not like it mattered anyway, he was going to be late to work regardless. But, It was stressful knowing he only had five more minutes to sleep…so he decided to beat his alarm today.

Clumsily smacking his hand against his desk until he felt his phone snatching it, canceling his alarm. DigDug let out a big yawn, throwing his covers off him in the process. Fiddling with his phone, he looked at the time.

4:55. Okay, not too bad.

Not thinking too much DigDug decided to check his socials, because what better to do on a work day then to check his ex's profile.

He began typing the username into the search bar, before his autocorrect already had the username typed out for him. " Kissyspace_ "

He was glad that they left off on good terms or she would've had him blocked. They still followed each other. Oddly enough, though, DigDug felt strange doing this.

It's been what? Six years since they broke things off. Yet, DigDug was scrolling to the most recent thing in the account like a lovesick teenager. They never talked much, outside of quick bump-ins in public– they couldn't even be considered friends at this point. Blowing a strand of hair out of his face he clicked on the most recent post.

Something…Something…Vacation…New clothes…Food picture.

It was a very normal post. DigDug, however, had a strong urge to say something. Something that screamed, "Hey, I'm still here! It's been so long, you haven't forgotten about me haven't you?"

He wasn't that desperate or, maybe he was? As he went to the comments typing away at his keypad.  Frowning his eyebrows, he typed out the first thing that came to mind…

"Wow, nice!"

No, too basic.

"Pretty"

That can go too many ways.

"Looks fun!"

No.

"Beautiful dress"

No…

"Nice facial features"

FUCK no.

Out of frustration DigDug groaned, moving onto his back, face in his hands. Not before he jumped feeling skin that was not his own. He sat up looking down at the other being in the bed.

Oh, he forgot about that…

Looking down then around his basement and hissed through his teeth, seeing his and clothes that did not belong to him scattered around.  Pulling his lips in a thin line, he sprung up, disregarding the person in his bed. Grabbing as much of his clothes as he could, and his iconic suit, he ran upstairs.

He'd let his mom deal with that… (He'd leave like a note and ten bucks for a cab…he wasn't a total ass.)

DigDug was lucky Nyamco was in a walking distance from his h– His mom's house. The car he owned was parked there anyway. He barely used it, except for storage and shit his mom would definitely berate him about. The only one used was Mappy, not like it was a big thing or anything. Mappy assumed the driver's seat naturally and Dug accepted that. Besides, he lost his driver's license. Ahem.

5:23. Yeah, he was going to be late

Speaking of Mappy, Nyamco really came to life once he joined. Goro setting him in some weird scenario at each turn. While DigDug did know of the history between them, seeing them bounce off of each other was something else, to say the least.

Goro was everything but fun until Mappy came around…well, besides that one time.

Putting that aside for now, DigDug let his lips curl up at that memory. He began to clock in and get to work.

The work day started off well for the most part, and it was finally lunch. And lunch time meant coming up from R&D to talk to Mappy.

"...And guess what, It turns out Cher was actually in love with pursuing her career as a digger."

"I'm pretty sure that's not how that movie went."

"Sure, that's what you think."

"DigDug– hm?" The mouse was interrupted by a loud buzz coming from his pocket. Mappy pulled his phone, only for disgust to take over his face.

"What's up?" DigDug took a peek at the mouse's phone which he finally upgraded after DigDug's desperate  attempts to convince him. The driller noticed the mouse was scrolling through his social media.

"Ever since I made an account on here Goro's been commenting on every one of my posts." Mappy spoke with great distaste.

DigDug dragged his lips into a thin line at the familiarity.

"I mean, like c'mon. Get a grip. How did he even find out…?" The mouse typed away on his phone, assuming he was responding to one of the comments. Mappy didn't seem to notice how the driller was falling behind.

Chapter Text

Night seemed to come quickly, I guess deciding to strictly work on a blueprint for the rest of the day does that to you.  DigDug chewed in the back of his pen, feverishly. Not noticing how dribs of ink dripped out and hit the desk.

Get a grip .

Throwing the pen aside, DigDug slouched in his chair. It's been six years, he didn't get it. Why did he still miss her? Maybe, it was missing the thrill of it all.

It was a long few years of intensity before a sudden break up. She said his problem was…something about not having enough 'emotional maturity'? Yeah he thinks that was it.

DigDug played his hands, tapping his thumbs together, leaning back in his chair. Now that he thinks about it, he hasn't changed much from when he was in a relationship.

He still went to mostly illegal house parties, he still hasn't bothered moving out of his mom's house, and he still hasn't bothered to regain his driver's license…

DigDug planted his feet on the ground.

He still couldn't properly comfort his best friend when he was on the brink of sobbing, or properly have a relationship without dipping out when things got too intense.

He slightly wondered if the cat had the same problem…

"Whatever . "

Was all DigDug said back to his thoughts. It was about time he clocked out and got the hell out of this place.

Unfortunately for DigDug it was raining hard. He stood at the glass doors, awkwardly. Watching the rain pour and pour. It was at least a ten minute walk to his house– make it five minutes if he ran.

Mappy was still working, so asking him to drive was a no. His mom was a no, period. He thought about his options before he decided sprinting out in the rain was the best.

His train of thought was interrupted, hearing a familiar voice to his right. The voice was directed at him, it was directed at whoever Goro was on the phone with. DigDug had no idea how the cat snuck up on him without him noticing. Goro tended to make an entrance in any room he appeared in.

DigDug overheard Goro's conversation. Not like he couldn't, the cat was loud as hell.

"...Of course, when do you think you can get here?" The cat's ear twitched. "Eh, that's not too bad…Okay, mhm. Make sure you actually use your blinkers this time, I'm not paying for another ticket…Mahaha, Bye, bye."

Goro's smile stretched across his face, a smile DigDug would only see when he was talking to Mappy, or potentially about to commit a crime. That smile immediately died when he shot his gaze towards DigDug.

"What?" The driller quickly realized he was staring at the cat the entire time as he spoke.

"Oh, um. Hey, Goro." DigDug managed to squeak out. They haven't really spoken since Goro fell down that hole. It's been emails and other employees being sent to R&D to forward an order.

The cat simply shook his head in disinterest, pointing his gaze somewhere else. Despite this, DigDug continued.

"Waiting for a ride?"

"Yes. Let me assume, you too?" Goro's words were quick and snappy.

"Yeah," DigDug sniffled.

Silence took over again. In boredom Dig Dug rocked his feet back and forth, humming a simple tune– the exact same tune he hummed when the two were in the tunnels. Goro's tail began to wag against the ground.

"You know you can always wait by the east doors?"

DigDug only barked out a laugh.

"Ha! if this is your way of trying to get rid of me just because of what happened in the tunnels just say so."

Goro's face scowled, just for a second before reassessing a natural expression. "Trying to get into your bosses pants isn't a very laughable matter."

"It could be." The driller chuckled, loudly. Instead of responding directly, Goro's lips curled in a twisted smile, as if he was trying to fight it down. He needed a smoke.

It was easy to see they found the situation assuming in their own weird rights. Goro just wasn't ready to admit that as much as DigDug. The cat began striding up the still laughing Dug.

DigDug didn't notice Goro's advances before he felt his cheek being twisted.

"Ouc–!"

"I have a company to run, you have a job to do. I have better things I have to and need to focus on." Goro took an opportunity to lean closely to the driller's face.

" Don't distract me ." Goro scanned DigDug's face, and DigDug did the same. Goro made sure his words got through that thick helmet of the man beneath him, while DigDug was focusing way too much on how Goro's whiskers were tickling his face.

Eventually, A loud honk was heard outside the glass door. The cat quickly pulled away from DigDug and went out the doors into the pouring rain.

DigDug stood there for a while, looking dumb as hell. He watched as Goro's car pulled off and out of Nyamco.

With all that said and done DigDug could only conclude one thing.

"Yeah, he wants me."
