Work Text:

Being the youngest of 4 (give or take) siblings wasn't easy.

Hannah Hook knew this better than anyone.

Because for as long as she could remember, she'd always been the baby sister. The one everyone protected and bossed around even when she didn't need it.

And for as long as she could remember, she had wanted a younger sibling. Maybe that's why she took so many little kids under her wing. Even the ones no one else wanted. Or maybe it was just because of her big heart that she wore on her sleeve.

No one knew for sure.

What everyone did know, however, was that Hannah Hook was a natural born older sister. Even if she didn't have any biological younger siblings of her own.

And it was all because of how she interacted with her younger crew mates.

The first time anyone really noticed it, Hannah had been 5 and one of the first people to meet little Tommy Wonderful after the younger girl was born.

And she was immediately taken with her.

Barely letting anyone else hold her.

Reading and singing to her.

Teaching her hexes and jinxes.

Teaching her how to draw and so on.

James was only exasperated at this point and Tommy’s mother, Misty the wonderful witch, thought that it was adorable. Even if she was a little baffled at how Hannah kept managing to get in her house at all hours of the day. Which would have admittedly been creepy if she wasn’t only 5 years old.

But that was something Misty was easily able to overlook in favor of her daughter getting a pseudo older sister, protector, and friend for life.

One time when Hannah was 6, someone had decided it was a great idea to pick a fight with Isaac Cipher.

A somewhat meek but verbally biting 5 year old who kept mostly to himself that had joined Hannah's crew only days before as an escape from his unsavory home life.

No one really knew what had started the fight.

In fact, all anyone could really remember from that day in the fish and chips shop was that the older kid— who was about 10— had lifted the frail boy up by his collar...

Only to be hit over the head with a plastic tray by a livid and very tiny Hook. Who proceeded to repeat the action until the boy ran out of the shop, crying and clutching a broken nose, never to return.

It wasn't the first time she had resorted to violence to protect her crew and it wouldn't be the last either.

But protection wasn't all Hannah brought to the table in the department of being a natural born elder sister.

She also brought kindness and love. And support. Which all of her crew mates were in desperate need of.

Noah had been a bit delayed in his early development. Meaning he didn't start walking till he was nearly three, which was unusual for a godling.

Especially a full-blooded one.

Which was a great source of frustration for his parents and siblings who had to carry him everywhere.

They were beginning to give up hope that he'd even walk at all.

But not Hannah.

No, Hannah held out hope. She was patient. She used encouraging words and positive reinforcement and eventually, she was able to get him to walk to her.

She still has the video of that day hidden under her bed in a box full of things Noah had given her over the years.

She was his favorite non-sibling crewmate for a reason, after all.

Hannah crawled under the table where the newest member of her crew, 3 year old Fiona, sat hidden from view. A bowl of black berries in her hand.

Which she immediately handed over, silently.

Fiona took them and ate them in silence alongside her captain, who never tried to force her to talk.

"I miss home," she finally said.

It was all she'd said in a very long time.

Hannah pulled her close "I know. I'm sorry. "

Hannah was only 7 when she found a baby satyr and a baby centaur abandoned near one another, and took them in under her wing—despite her family and friend’s objections.

After days of research, she ended up naming them ‘Lysander Ajax Foundling’ and ‘Marcys Atticus Foundling’ respectively.

She taught them how to read.

She practiced archery with Marcys even though she was bad at it until he improved.

She helped him with his back and hoof pain, and tracked down food that he could safely eat after discovering that he would get sick after eating certain things.

She fished a teddy bear out of the barges and repaired it all so Marcys could have a toy.

She helped Lysander with his hoof, back, and head pain.

She made sure they took proper care of his horns.

She found food he could eat without getting too sick and took care of him when the pollution to nature left him bedridden on bad days.

She found and cleaned a pan flute for him so he could have something that was solely his, and taught him how to sword fight.

Hannah was 8 when she was given a baby by a dying tree nymph who had been lived on the isle long before the barrier was put up.

A dying tree nymph would begged her to find someone to care for her baby.

Someone who would treat her daughter right.

She decided that since she had already taken Fiona, Lysander, Marcys, Noah, and Tommy under her wing that, that person might as well be her.

So Hannah took the baby girl back to her ship and named her ‘Willow Juniper Hawthorne’ to honor her fallen mother.

She learned how to care for her hair even though Hannah didn’t even know how to care for her own.

She learned how to take care of the tree that was keeping Willow alive and how to make vegetarian food even though it was hard to do on the isle.

Hannah taught her how to read and write and walk.

She danced and sang with her.

She played in the rain with her.

Hannah even found a little dancing flower toy and gifted it to Willow on her third birthday.

All because she just happened to be the one the tree nymph approached that day.

She couldn’t say that she had any regrets.

The same year Willow was left in Hannah’s care, one of her father’ friends had a baby.

That friend being the legendary pirate pharaoh who had long forgotten his real name.

The same legendary pirate pharaoh who was slowly becoming comatose because of the barrier that had been stripping him of the magic that kept him alive ever since he had been sent there by King Beast and Queen Belle.

Which meant that he couldn’t raise the child himself.

And for some reason that his friends just couldn’t fathom, he ended up handing over the baby to Hannah.

Who refused to hand him over when asked,

She ended up naming him Darius after a great Pharaoh and gave him the last name ‘Foundling’ which she had also given to Fiona so the two wouldn’t feel alone.

She tolerated his saqueadas even though she was terrified of bugs and the noise they made overstimulated her.

She stole a string pulled cat toy from Jafar’s shop for his 3rd birthday so he could have a toy.

She soothed him when the pain of decaying became too much for him.

She found someone to teach him Egyptian when she realized that she couldn’t.

She learned how to make Egyptian cuisine for him.

She changed his wraps.

She taught him manners and put up with his habit of yelling “I curse you!” whenever he was upset.

Hannah even learned how to care for his hair and comforter him when chunks of it fell out.

Her love for him was never in doubt.

When it became apparent to Hannah that Dread the evil genie—a friendenemy of her father’s— had no idea how to care for his seemingly human twins, she took them in.

She did the research and figured out what would and wouldn't hurt them.

She did the research and named them ‘Nadia and Noor Foundling’. Continuing the tradition she had unintentionally started when she first took in Fiona.

She swallowed her pride and learned how to make Arabian cuisine from Jay and Jade for them.

Hannah danced with them even though she was bad at it.

She fished a monkey with cymbals toy out of the ocean for them and bribed Carlos de Vil to repair it for her just so the two of them had something to play with.

She kept their magic lamp hidden so no one could make them grant wishes.

She chased Jafar away from them.

She made a deal with Reza so he’d teach them Arabic in return for any astronomy related books she happened to find.

All to make their lives easier and to keep them in touch with their heritage.

Even though no one ever asked her to.

Hannah liberated a boy who was a ⅓ human, a ⅓ goblin, and a ⅓ troll from the unethical business 'Claw Trimmers' when she was only 10.

She had seen how the other workers and the owners had treated the poor boy who they called 'Slime face' and stepped in.

Starting a fight and taking him in.

Naming him 'Beau Rodmar Nikolas Founding' after a lot of research when she discovered the blonde hadn't been given a real one.

She made him wooden tools to play with and found him a box to keep his collection of shiny things.

She made him cupcakes and fought anyone who looked at him the wrong way.

She patiently taught him how to read and write.

She danced with him and treated him like the person he had never felt like before.

She protected him from Maleficent.

And spat on anyone who had anything bad to say about it without a second thought.

Hannah handed 3 year old Jolene Bog, a box wrapped in tissue paper smiling mischievously.

"Happy birthday!"

Jolene looked at her warily, like the shy child she was but took the present and opened it anyway. And let out a squeal of delight at what she found.

A barely chipped, black music box with a little dancing punk ballerina inside. Hannah had spent hours digging through the barrage looking for it.

Jolene never parted with it.

Hannah noticed and made sure to keep it in good condition so that it'd never stop working.

After all, She'd do anything to see Jolene smile.

Hannah was the one who gave Craven his favorite frog plushy the day he was born.

No one had asked her to.

No one had even told her about how close to tears little Jolene was about how her mama wouldn't wake up.

No one had told her that Anna and Aaron needed help taking care of their younger siblings because Chernabog couldn't be bothered.

But she had shown up anyway, bearing gifts and had stayed until one of her friends had dragged all of them to their real home.

Their ship.

She had named him.

He kept that plushie long into adulthood.

Just like how Hannah kept every drawing he and the others gave her.

Levi started giving Hannah little rocks he found when he first joined her crew at 2.

By the time he was 11, she had over a hundred of them stored in jars under her bed.

She never threw them out.

She made him a paper boat every year on his birthday knowing he'd lose them like he always did. And had a back up every year.

Hannah taught Ike how to sword fight.

And how to swim.

She tucked him and the other little ones in and read them bedtime stories.

Most of which she'd made up.

He loved each and every one.

Hannah jump roped with Skelebar.

No matter how many times she fell over.

No matter how many teeth she lost.

All to see Skelebar laugh and giggle.

She made her a cake on her birthday which wasn't easy and burned her hand but didn't complain.

She'd do anything to see that girl smile.

She did her hair and learned how to paint nails.

Everything for her.

She named Atlas.

She taught him how to talk and walk.

She handmade him toys and clothes.

She gave him cuddles and sent him off to school.

She fought anyone who looked at him or Skelebar or Levi or Fiona funny.

Because she loved them all with every fiber of her being and then some.

So yeah. Hannah wasn't anyone's big sister, biologically.

At least not yet.

But she was one in spirit and heart. And via actions. And that was what counted, right?
