If you just smile

Summary:

Work Text:

Crowley sighed. It had been a long day, even from the point of view of someone who doesn't need to work for a living. After searching in vain, he had found only one small temptation to do and it had been boring as hell.

It had been like wanting to watch something on one of those streaming services. You search for the right movie for hours and when you find it, you realize that it wasn't worth the hours of searching.

And then temptation is not what it used to be. If he was honest, really honest with himself, spending the day doing nothing and being in the company of his angel in his bookshop gave him much more satisfaction.

Tonight, he couldn't wait to get home. Actually, Aziraphale's home. Which had technically become Crowley's home. Even his plants had taken up residence there. It was only a matter of time -and courage- before it became his home for good.

Usually, when he came home to Aziraphale, he was able to unwind immediately as soon as he walked through the door, but tonight that was not the case.

He felt like he had wasted his time. And even though he had indefinite time, being immortal and all, he hated it. It was as if he had electricity running under his skin that he couldn't unload. Seeing that peace of mind was running away from him, he went to pour himself a glass of red wine from the angel's stash.

A few moments later, he was slumped on the couch with his glass of wine in hand, hoping that the burn of the alcohol would take effect and help him forget this hellish day.

But it wasn't working.

He heard the door open and moments later Aziraphale’s voice called, "Crowley?"

"In the living room."

He heard Aziraphale approach, felt two hands on his shoulders as Aziraphale pressed a kiss to the top of his head before standing before him.

"Rough day?" asked Aziraphale, pointing to the glass in Crowley's hand.

"That's a major understatement," Crowley said as he set his glass down before standing up.

The angel moved forward to embrace him and Crowley, mentally exhausted, let it happen, letting his forehead fall against Aziraphale's shoulder.

Aziraphale tightened his arms around him and Crowley knew in that moment that this was what he had been missing to unwind. No amount of alcohol could give him what Aziraphale was giving him. That silent understanding. Crowley wondered how he had done it before. His gaze fell on his glass of wine. Just like that.

After a few moments, when he straightened up, Aziraphale raised a questioning eyebrow.

Crowley said softly, "You know, there is one thing you can do for me. To make me completely forget about this dreadful day."

"What?" asked Aziraphale with a puzzled look. "Tell me and if it's within my capabilities, I'll do it."

Crowley, looking at him fondly, answered, "Oh, that's right up your alley my angel, because you do it all the time. The only thing you have to do is smile at me. Just smile. I only need you to smile right now."

Aziraphale looked surprised then obeyed and smiled softly.

With that smile he only had for his demon.

Crowley raised his hand and ran his thumb over Aziraphale's lips, then whispered softly, "That smile. That smile is the most powerful miracle you could ever imagine."

Aziraphale's smile widened and Crowley leaned in to kiss the still smiling lips, letting the last remnants of that hellish day evaporate.
