A Week of Fluff

Summary:

A collection of seven unconnected drabbles written for the SessKag Fluff Week

Chapter 1: Day 1 - Courtship

Notes:

Prompt: Character A has been acting strange so character B confronts them.

Chapter Text

Kagome would have never called Sesshoumaru touchy-feely, but something must have happened to him three months ago. A serious head injury was Kagome’s best guess. Because ever since he'd been behaving wholly out of character.

He came to visit the village every week. And without a fail, he would seek out her instead of little Rin. He’d sidle up right next to Kagome until they stood so close their shoulders touched. And then he’d do nothing. He’d just stand there, silent, giving her a hooded side-eye.

Then, last month he’d gravitated to rubbing his hand along her back on occasion. Or giving Kagome’s shoulder a squeeze. 

Kagome had been holding her tongue. Honestly, it wouldn’t have been creepy if it had been anyone else. From Sesshoumaru, however, this sudden Mr Handsy routine was bizarre. And Kagome didn’t want to provoke an insane daiyoukai.

But this, this was just too much.

She stared at the red blotch on the inside of her wrist, the shape of his fingertip. 

“Did you just smear me with blood ?” she demanded to know, incredulous.

“Yes.”

Eurgh. So unhygienic.

She slanted a glance at his blood-stained claws.

“Is it yours?”

“Yes.”

Well, that was something at least.

Kagome inhaled slowly and prayed for patience. And some fricking answers.

“Why?”

“To lay claim.”

“To… what?”

“The scent-marking no longer seemed sufficient,” Sesshoumaru elaborated.

Kagome blinked. “ That’s what you’ve been doing these last three months? Scent-marking me?”

“Yes.”

“ Why?! ”

“To lay claim,” Sesshoumaru repeated. “To discourage potential suitors as you have a tendency to amass them. Myself included.”

Kagome's poor overwrought brain broke at that point. She was pretty sure she was blushing.

She swallowed. “I’m not familiar with youkai customs, Sesshoumaru. You’ll need to use your words.”

His burning gaze locked with hers.

“Will you be mine?”

Chapter 2: Day 2 - Valentine's

Kagome was running late. She’d stayed overtime to help a student after class, and then she’d had to hurry to the chocolatier a couple of districts over to pick up the box she’d ordered. While Kagome hurried home, her brain was busy with plans. With luck, she might still have time to set something up. They could do something simple for Valentine’s. Watch a movie. They should still have Sesshoumaru’s favourite ice cream in the freezer. It wouldn’t need to be anything fancy, as long as they were together. 

“I’m home!” Kagome called, kicking off her shoes.

“Welcome back,” Sesshoumaru’s voice replied.

A smile rose to Kagome’s lips and her heart warmed. Chocolates in hand, she went in search of her husband. 

She found him dressed smartly in a suit and holding a bouquet of pink tulips. The room flickered with candlelight and dinner was laid out on the table. Kagome noticed several of her favourite dishes were on the menu.

“What’s all this?” she asked, surprised.

Sesshoumaru smiled.

“A date.”

“It’s lovely,” Kagome breathed. 

She went to him, greeted him with a kiss. Heart brimming with love, she held out the box of chocolates to him. “Happy Valentine’s day.”

Chapter 3: Day 3 - Hurt/Comfort

He woke up in the middle of the night to a pounding on his door. Wondering which suicidal creature would dare to disturb him at such an ungodly hour, he crossed his dark house in unhurried strides. When he yanked the door open, his heart stopped. 

Tears had carved paths on her cheeks, blooming with bruises. Those paths converged with the rusty tracks of dried blood. One of her eyes was swollen shut, the other red from crying, its brilliant blue dimmed. She was hugging herself, soaked from the rain and trembling.

"I didn't know where else to go," she said in a small voice.

Inside him, a monster howled, yearning to tear out the hand that had put those bruises on her. But Kagome didn’t need more violence around her, so he swallowed his instinct and focused on her needs.

“Come in.”

He led her to the living room, flicking on the lights as he passed the switch. She curled up on the corner of his sofa, silent and shivering. 

“I’ll be right back,” he promised.

It took him a moment to gather all he needed and he had to make a couple of trips to carry everything over. But soon enough he was kneeling next to the sofa, gently wrapping two blankets around her. Next to her, on the sofa, he placed a tray. There was a bottle of water, a cup of tea and one of the chocolate puddings Rin favoured. 

“There’s more if you’re hungry,” he told her as he picked up the first-aid kit he’d fetched from the bathroom. “Let me take care of you.”

She huddled under the blankets and fixed her one good eye on him. The corner of her mouth twitched. A ghost of the smile he remembered so well.

“Thank you.”

Chapter 4: Day 4 - Wedding

They had chosen to forgo ceremonies. Caught between the past and the future and given that theirs was a union between a youkai and a miko, choosing which traditions to follow would’ve been too much of a headache. They would just do it their own way.

Eventually, they would celebrate with their friends and family. Kagome would insist on that much.

But for now, there were only the two of them, standing under the light of the full moon one autumn night, the Bone Eater's Well their only witness.

Hands clasped, gazes locked, they spoke their vows.

“I promise to protect you and provide for you. Whenever you may need one, I will be your shelter,” Sesshoumaru said, voice solemn.

Kagome’s eyes twinkled. “I won’t promise to obey you. Where’s the fun in that? But I will trust you and respect you and stand by your side, whatever the future holds.”

“I wish to learn to know every single part of you, every shard, every aspect that you are comprised of. And I vow to cherish all of you, every day.”

“I will lose my temper and yell at you,” Kagome promised in turn. “I’ill cry on your shoulder and I’ll probably hog the blanket. I can and will chatter your ear off and I’ll keep your ego in check.” 

“You may try,” Sesshoumaru amended, the corner of his lip curling up in a smile. “On occasion, I will be stubborn and overbearing. My temper might snap as well. But my love for you will remain unchanged, even in the midst of anger.”

Kagome smiled in return. “I look forward to waking up with you. Laughing with you. Making you blush. I want quiet evenings with you and comfortable silences. And I promise with every day, I’ll love you more.”

Chapter 5: Day 5 - Touch

It was a beautiful day. Kagome’s mending sat forgotten in her lap as she looked up at the canopy of leaves, the blue skies beyond. Until there was movement in the corner of her eye. 

Kagome smiled. Sesshoumaru was coming. They’d been spending a lot of time together, lately.

But something was different about him this time. Kagome blinked.

“What’s that?”

Sesshoumaru took a seat next to her. 

“RIn seems to enjoy them. I thought perhaps you would, too,” he said, holding out his offering.

Kagome accepted the handful of flowers and stared down at the colourful, fragrant gift. In her chest, warmth bloomed and swelled. Sesshoumaru had just brought her flowers. For no reason at all. Her heart quivered and giddy happiness bubbled up from deep within.

Touched by the unexpected gesture, Kagome met his golden eyes — and knew just what to do in return. 

“Thank you,” she said and set the flowers down on the grass. Then, Kagome rose to her knees and closed their distance. One hand resting on Sesshumaru’s shoulder, the fingertips of the other brushing along one magenta stripe, she leaned in.

He inhaled in sharp surprise, seconds before her lips pressed against his.

Kagome kept the kiss light and brief, though she couldn’t help ending it on a lingering note when she felt his hand cradle the back of her head. 

Slowly, she pulled back, feeling like she had sipped on sunlight. And the most astonishing sight greeted her soft blue eyes.

Kagome ran her thumb over his cheek, marvelling at its delicate hue.

“You’re blushing,” she murmured, a smile in her voice. “It’s adorable.”

“It is deplorable,” he retorted.

“It makes me want to kiss you again.”

The blush beneath her fingertips darkened. Kagome laughed. And, listening to her heart, leaned in again.

Chapter 6: Day 6 - Domestic

Sesshoumaru leaned against the kitchen counter, watching Kagome flit about in organised chaos, getting together ingredients and measuring cups and mixing bowls. When she’d deemed everything to be just right, she began. She hummed as she carefully mixed the dry ingredients before dumping them into her bowl. 

She always hummed when she baked. It was one of the reasons why Sesshoumaru always ended up standing in the kitchen and paying witness. Until she’d invite him to take part.

“You have flour on your nose,” Sesshoumaru informed her.

Kagome turned and deliberately bopped him on the nose with her smeared finger.

“There, now we match.” She grinned.

He raised a single imperious eyebrow at her but stayed silent. He was far too used to Kagome’s silliness.

“Since you’re here, why don’t you get started on the sugar and butter?”

And there it was, the invitation.

“Very well,” Sesshoumaru acquiesced, falling into the familiar pattern and grabbing the mixer. “I can manage standing here and letting the machine do all the work.”

“Can’t have you overexerting yourself, dear,” Kagome teased, bumping him with her hip.

He smiled and stood beside his wife, listening to the mixer’s soothing whir and Kagome’s cheerful humming.

Chapter 7: Day 7 - Family

“Oh, look at the guinea pigs! They’re so cute!”

The squeal came, unsurprisingly, from mama. Mama got easily excited and Mamoru was sure she’d squeal a lot more during their visit to this petting zoo.  

“Cute!” Haruki echoed, running towards the enclosure, just a little ahead of mama.

Mamoru followed at a slower pace. He was already six, after all. He wouldn’t run around yelling like some little kid . Haruki was only four, so it was all right for him to run to see guinea pigs.

Mamoru glanced back at papa. He was just setting down Mamoru’s little sister. Since Sumire didn’t walk very well yet, papa held her hand as they slowly followed after Haruki and mama. 

“Do I get to ride a pony?” Mamoru asked.

“You can if you want to,” papa replied.

“I think I want to,” Mamoru said. “Are there spiders here?”

“They don’t have any spiders on display or that you could pet. But since we’re outside, I’m sure you could find some. They do, however, have a lizard.”

“Then I want to pet the lizard,” Mamoru declared.

“I’m sure we’ll come across the lizard eventually,” papa said.

“Sesshoumaru! Look!” Mama waved at them, holding a guinea pig to her chest. “Isn’t it sooo cute?”

“Mom is a little silly,” Mamoru confided to his father in an undertone.

“Sometimes,” papa agreed.

“Bunny!” Sumire shrieked. She reached out over the edge of the enclosure.

“No, sweetie, this is a guinea pig. We’ll see the bunnies next,” Kagome promised, then crouched down. “Do you want to pet the guinea pig, Sumire? Gently, be nice.”

Sumire giggled when her small pudgy fingers brushed against the fur.

Haruki was crouching in the middle of the enclosure and looked back at them. “They’re so soft! Come try, Mamoru!”

Mamoru guessed the guinea pigs were cute. And their faces were kinda funny. And he was curious to know what their fur would feel like. 

“I’m coming,” Mamoru told his brother. 

Papa helped him into the enclosure and Mamoru walked over to Haruki and the guinea pigs.

“This is going to be so great,” Kagome enthused, cuddling the guinea pig. 

“Mamoru wants to ride a pony and pet a lizard,” Sesshoumaru told her.

“Of course he does.” Kagome grinned. “Well done, Sumire, you’re being so gentle! Good job!”

Sumire clapped her hands, delighted.

Sesshoumaru met his wife’s eyes and answered her smile.
