Chapter Text

I made this because I wanted one that would be roughly proportional to my action figures and the official plushies are expensive. This is Sculpey clay on top of...some kind of cheaper uncolored clay whose brand I can't remember...and it was an INCREDIBLE PAIN to make, especially when I got to the point where I needed to bake it. Looked as perfect as I could get it before that, of course, and then the heat cracked the clay in several places...and I filled in the cracks and baked it again...and it cracked again and also got discolored in one spot because I left it in too long...so I finally decided screw it, even pre-incinerator the Companion Cube got pretty dinged up in that test chamber.

More recently, I started very, very simply with a really minor custom I did as a gift for a Jo, who was annoyed that the Mulder Funko figure had a gun and Scully only had a flashlight (and probably a good way to start with customizing, considering how simple this was). The gun was from a big stash of Star Wars figures and accessories an acquaintance gave me a few years ago, and originally it was too long to look like a normal handgun because it was supposed to be a Star Wars rifle. I cut off about half the barrel and a protrusion on the side, colored over the exposed white plastic with a permanent marker, and super-glued it to Scully's hand. So, REALLY simple. I originally posted this on Figure Realm, if the images aren't showing up for some reason.

The finished product:

I actually still haven't finished Fallout 3 yet because I am the Slowest Gamer Ever (and, uh, I think I haven't played any of it since 2012, how the hell did that happen), but I love my badass little Lone Wanderer. I gave her blue hair just because I could, and in-game, she looks like this:

So to make the female Lone Wanderer figure look more like my character, I bought an Arya Stark figure as the closest thing to my Lone Wanderer's hairstyle, eventually got both their heads off, and started painting.

The paint color I chose ended up being a different blue than what I gave my actual in-game character because the Lone Wanderer figure's suit was basically that color already, and I didn't want her hair and outfit to match, because...that would be weird.

A problem: to get the edges of the hair without getting paint on her skin, after I'd already done exactly that, I taped up her whole face with masking tape. It was really tedious and it kind of took a long time. And then when I was done painting...

haha yep, paint got under the masking tape. Most of that came off with some rubbing alcohol, but still--annoying. (You can't really tell here, but the tape itself actually left some residue on her eyes, too.) I'm pretty pleased with the final product, though. It's a pretty simple custom, but it looks the way I wanted it to.

Okay, these aren't exactly proper customs because all I did was buy the cheap Age of Ultron Captain America figure and clip his shield to Natasha and Peggy long enough for the pictures, but I did buy the Cap figure specifically to do this. I wanted to duplicate the adorable Funko shirt of AoU Natasha with Steve's shield, which was sadly exclusive to SDCC and therefore horribly expensive, and then I figured I might as well do the same with Peggy. So now the ladies who have actually held the shield in canon get to hold it as Funko figures too.

Somewhat hilariously, I didn't realize until just now that there is an actual GameStop-exclusive Black Widow variant figure of her with the shield, so this wasn't strictly necessary. It sounds like she's hard to find, though, and although she's really cute (and I'm pleased to see any additional Black Widow merch coming out, whether I buy it or not), she's identical to the standard AoU Natasha except for the shield in place of one of her batons. (Although, let's be real, if I see her next time I'm at GameStop, I'll at least be very tempted, because...Natasha.)

Kind of spur-of-the-moment custom almost entirely based on available spare parts: Daisy Johnson / Quake / Skye from Agents of SHIELD, as seen in the most recent season with her new short haircut. I used the unmodified head of Allison Reynolds (The Breakfast Club), and the body is Agent May with the blue vest(?) painted black–-so, she still has the SHIELD logo on her arms, although you can barely tell in the picture.

The only Funko figure of Shepard from Mass Effect is the default-for-some-reason White Dude Shepard, which is terrible, so I decided I'd make my own FemShep to match my in-game Shepard (who has short black hair and an eyebrow scar). She's made from a modified Agent Melinda May (Agents of SHIELD) head on a mostly unmodified Dude Shep body, because 1) Shepard is buff and she seriously doesn't need the standard tiny female body, and 2) I know canon FemShep’s armor has boob cups but there’s literally no reason it needs to (see also Captain Phasma and Brienne of Tarth). The guns on her back are from Marvel Legends Star Lord, which pleases me as a good use of spare parts, and yeah, for the box I just stuck Agent May’s face on top of Dude Shep’s.

In case anyone's curious, these are the original figures I used; I got to use a Dremel for the first time to carve off some of May's hair:
 

Also, because she's a Marvel Funko figure, May is a bobblehead, and theoretically that should have meant I could pretty much unscrew it instead of having to boil the figure and carefully pop the head off. BUT NOPE. Pliers and a lot of effort were involved instead. I imagine it depends on the figure, so I guess I'm just unlucky.

Lyviel and I decided to make our mutual friend a Christmas gift of her Dragon Age: Origins warden Isley Amell (tiny angry human mage) and her love interest Alistair, both in Funko form. Look how cute they are!

Isley’s head is from human Ariel and her body is from Anna (Frozen), both repainted, and she also has her own mage staff from my stash of Star Wars fodder, probably from Yoda originally. Alistair is a repainted Kristoff (also Frozen) body with the pointed toes cut off and an Age of Ultron Hawkeye head. So he’s a bobblehead and Isley isn’t, which is kind of appropriate, because he’s a huge dork. (I'm also romancing him in my playthrough, because seriously how could I not, he is such an adorable dork.)

Lyviel/Calli and I spent most of Thanksgiving weekend on this project and it was a lot of fun once we figured out what we were doing (more or less). Calli painted both bodies and I mostly did Isley’s head. We wanted to give her appropriately angry eyebrows but decided we weren't artistically talented enough to risk screwing up her face. In general though, we're both really pleased with how these two came out, and our friend loved them, so yay all around. :)

Another custom Funko, this one actually for someone I didn't already know, which is super weird but kind of cool. After I tweeted my Shep to some Bioware people, she got retweeted enough that one guy asked me to make another one. This is basically default FemShep, using DudeShep’s body again with Scully’s head. It wasn’t as simple as it should have been, first because getting DudeShep’s head to separate from his neck ring ended up being unexpectedly difficult (this was when I stabbed my finger with a needle file), and then so was getting that back on his body and Scully’s head on his neck. But all’s well that ends well and now maybe I know better for next time. (Also, I’m pleased with the box.)

YOOOOOOOO LOOK WHAT I MADE

Kid Loki is at last basically done! I should still do a little bit of paint touch-up and then seal him, but nothing I plan to do will change him much visually, and I wanted to post anyway because I’m excited. This little guy is my first non-Funko custom figure, and I’m pretty proud of him even if he’s not perfect, because he’s the most complicated custom I’ve made so far. I’d been planning to make him for a while, because I love this kid to bits and I happened to have a child Boba Fett action figure that would work really well, and then a relevant contest on Figure Realm came along to give me a deadline! So that all worked out nicely. (It ended up with very few entries, too, so I actually got fourth place--I mean, I didn't win anything, but people liked it so that's cool.)

As mentioned, the base is young Boba Fett from Attack of the Clones, from a giant stash of Star Wars fodder a former professor gave me. Unfortunately little Boba is weirdly pouty, much more than I’d like, but I am definitely not at a skill level where I want to try repainting or resculpting anybody’s face. Loki is almost completely repainted; I also clipped out the bottom of his tunic and sanded down his puffy pants (first time using power tools, too, so that was exciting). The medallion/clasp is a thumb tack with a print-out of his symbol glued on, because I can’t actually draw, and the bands on his boots and gloves are painted rubber bands. The hood is sculpted from air-drying clay (I’m not hugely fond of Kid Loki’s second black hood anyway and didn’t want to make this unnecessarily complicated, so he just doesn’t have that part or his circlet, which is fine because he didn’t wear them in a few Journey Into Mystery issues).

Marvel Universe Thor (3.75") is also shown here for scale, and because every Loki needs his big brother. (I’ll be honest: my intention to make Kid Loki was the entire reason I bought a comics Thor in the first place.)

I don't even know if I'll be any good at this game (I often suck at puzzle games, despite liking them in theory), but everything about it is adorable, so of course I had to make my own Yarny after Martin Sahlin posted instructions. My Yarny is a bit smaller than the original, mostly because I wanted to pose him with my action figures, and I used red pipe cleaners (doubled up and twisted together to make them stronger) instead of armature wire. Hard to say whether that's better or worse in terms of looks and ease of construction, but he turned out okay. Mostly okay. His eyes, admittedly, are a little weird.

An extremely quick and simple custom Funko: Pepper in the Iron Man suit, aka Rescue! I mean, she only wore the suit for about 30 seconds in the MCU and it looked a little different, and she wasn’t called anything, and actual comics Rescue has boob-plate armor because of course she does, but whatever. This is just a Claire Standish (Breakfast Club) head and an Age of Ultron Iron Man, both of which I picked up very cheap.

New, much more complex custom than Pepper: coronation Loki! Yes, I made a Pop of Loki from the tragic little deleted scene about his sad nerd fantasy, and I’m still finding bits of fake fur everywhere. The base was of course TDW Loki; I cut off his dagger and gave him Mjolnir and a red cape instead, both from the cheap 3.75" Age of Ultron Thor figure, and then added the fur, which was kind of a huge pain. It’s probably a little hard to tell in these pictures, but I also painted over all the green bits on Loki’s costume with a layer of black so the green is barely visible, because I don’t know if it was intentional but that’s what I see in the deleted scene (and it makes sense, given that green is Loki’s color and his fantasy is about him being Thor).

Did this Nick Valentine Funko figure for a specific request--much more complicated than a lot of the other customs I've doing. The head, left hand, and right arm are from Freddy Krueger, and the body is from the X-Files Cigarette Smoking Man. Basically everything had to be repainted--skin, eyes, coat, metal hand--and I also modified the hand so it looked a little more like a robotic hand rather than knives, added a hat band (a perfectly sized rubber band, painted black), added patches to his coat with clay, and used more clay at the sides of his head to mimic where his synthetic skin is peeling off. Also ended up having to use my rotary tool to widen his neck hole, because it wouldn't fit otherwise.

Nick was definitely the most complex custom Funko I've done so far and I feel like he took FOREVER (well, he kind of did, probably around 20 hours spread out over a couple weeks, although I really need to do better at keeping track of the time I spend), but I'm pretty pleased with how he came out.

After being asked on Twitter to make another FemShep figure, I ended up making a few other Shepard variants, depending on requests. So far, I've made these:

This version of default redhead FemShep uses the head from Age of Ultron Black Widow; the blonde is Rachel Duncan from Orphan Black with repainted eyes, and both black-haired Shepards use the head of Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan (the customer specifically requested purple eyes for the second one to match his girlfriend's Shepard as a gift, which I thought was sweet). The black-haired ones also ended up being a little more complicated because Mikasa (and Mulan, for what it's worth) have heads made differently from the others, all one piece of much thicker plastic instead of lighter plastic with a separate neck ring, so I ended up having to use my rotary tool to shave down the neck peg or widen the neck hole.

A gift for a friend: 4" scale figures of Selene, Michael Corvin (hybrid form), and Lucian from the Underworld movies. Selene is a repainted Marvel Universe Valkyrie with the belt and long hair removed; Michael is a repainted Marvel Universe Drax with a repainted head from the cheap Age of Ultron Thor. I'm pretty happy with both of them. Lucian is a repainted Endor Han Solo, which is why he's shorter than the other two; I painted the beard and added long hair from a Jedi in my stash. The necklace is obviously just an approximation of the one he wears in the movies.

Another custom, sort of! I mean, it is, but I only swapped the heads long enough to take this picture, which was actually kind of hard because Steve’s neck peg is a lot thicker than Loki’s, so the spring didn’t fit and I just sort of had to balance the head on there.

Anyway. Loki in the Captain America suit, because of the deleted scene where Tom actually wears the costume as Loki imitating Cap before Chris Evans’ version of him imitating Tom being Loki imitating Cap (and/or Loki in any Steve/Loki fic where he wears Steve’s suit for some reason). Look, I already had both figures, I couldn’t resist.

Here's a simple custom Funko I wanted to share because I found a solution that made me feel pretty clever: the person who requested it wanted a male Lone Wanderer with glasses, and because there weren’t any glasses-wearing figures that matched the buyer's screenshot very well, I bought Peeta for the head and a cheap Alex Vause for the glasses. Alex has long hair, though, covering where the arms of the glasses would be, so the glasses just didn’t have arms and I had to find something else to replace them. I eventually thought to use the tines from a plastic fork, and they worked perfectly–-you probably wouldn’t guess the glasses didn’t begin life that way if you didn’t already know.

Another request: Jessica Jones! I repainted a Gotham Selina Kyle figure, which also involved cutting off the goggles, discovering that they left behind two big holes in her head, adding clay to cover up the holes, and slowly losing my mind as I added more and more layers of clay in attempts to smooth out the rough areas on the hood. Unfortunately, I completely forgot to take any progress pictures to show what I mean, because lately I've barely been able to keep a thought in my head long enough to act on it.

Finally a personal project: John and Abigail Marston from Red Dead Redemption! I probably need to mess with Abigail’s belt (a rubber band) more because I don’t like how it looks, and also maybe give her a gun, but I’m really pleased with how John turned out. Abigail is a repainted Claire Randall from Outlander, and John is Sheriff Mannix from The Hateful Eight. The beard is of course painted, and the scars were made with a utility knife, nail-polish remover, and a little flesh-colored paint. Normally I would've tried harder to make the paint job smoother on Marston's clothes, except everything he wears is like 60% dust and dirt, so the rougher look (especially the dust on his boots) is intentional.

A custom for mojobaby75, and the first time a request was arranged through/because of Tumblr! This is the actually screen-accurate version of the Loki Cap figure I half-assed earlier, using a Captain America body from the first Avengers movie. (This one was not half-assed. His head is properly attached. Jewelry pliers and super glue were involved.) As before, this is Loki in the Captain America suit, because of the TDW deleted scene where Tom actually wears the costume as Loki imitating Cap before Chris Evans’ version of him imitating Tom being Loki imitating Cap (and/or Loki in any Steve/Loki fic where he wears Steve’s suit for some reason).

What is says on the tin:

I have no excuse for this. It just occurred to me that a metal bottlecap would be about the right size for a shield for my 3.75" figures, and I thought it would be funny and pretty easy to make if I just glued a decent twist-tie to the cap, so I did it. This actually took longer to make than I'd expected because it turns out even super glue doesn't dry very fast on shiny metal, but oh well, it's on solidly now.

Another request, this one for Emily, whom I already knew: Undercover Boss Kylo Ren, a.k.a. Matt the Radar Technician, from Adam Driver's awesome SNL skit. (Seriously, if you haven't watched it yet, fix that.) The head is Napoleon Dynamite, with the glasses temporarily removed so I could repaint his half-closed eyes, and the body is a repainted Steve Hiller from Independence Day. The lightsaber hand and figure base are both from an actual Kylo Ren Funko figure, with some added clay to cover up where I glued it. I just printed the name tag, and the First Order patches were cut out from a pack of Star Wars stickers that happened to be the last one available at Michaels. "Matt" was a little tricky, especially the hand, but overall this was a fun project and I'm really pleased with how he turned out.

A new custom, finally another one that isn't a Funko! In Marvel's Earth-9997, the world of the Earth X series (and followup series Universe X and Paradise X), the venom symbiote has attached itself to May Parker, Spider-Man's daughter. He thinks he's lost her, but nope--she's strong enough that she's completely retained her own mind and personality, able to use her new symbiote powers however she wants along with the spider powers she inherited from her dad. During a later part of the storyline, she meets Spider-Girl from a different universe, and after a brief misunderstanding, they're both thrilled to have a sister. Although I find the Earth X books kind of weird and confusing in general, I care a lot about May (and Iron Maiden, and Earth-9997 Loki, and...that's mostly it).

This figure was almost entirely made from a repainted Marvel Legends Wasp (shown next to Marvel Legends Spider-Girl in a couple of these pictures; I didn't realize when I picked the Wasp body that the sizes were so different, but Venom struck me as older than Spider-Girl, so whatever). The unmasked version uses Wasp's head with a few painted tendrils; the masked version uses a repainted head from a 6" Spider-Man of some kind that I found at a thrift store, whose neck peg was unfortunately a lot smaller, so I had to open it up quite a bit with my Dremel. I also opened up the holes that were already on Wasp's back for her wings so I could stick in repainted Lego Venom symbiote tendrils. Her claw-like hand, which is also removable because I drilled a hole in it so it would fit over May's wrist, is from an older Penance action figure I found at my local comics shop.

A very simple figure I made by request a while ago: a custom Sole Survivor with a facial scar. I say Sole Survivor even though I obviously used the Lone Wanderer body, because there is actually not a female Sole Survivor Funko figure, and I modified the vault number on the back a little bit to look like 111 instead of 101 (luckily for me, most of it's covered up by a strap, so I didn't have to do much). I thought for sure I took a picture of this, but apparently I did not, so you'll just have to take my word for it. Anyway, the head is from Bioshock Infinite Elizabeth, and I made the scar the same way I did with John Marston, by scoring the face with a utility knife and then going over it with nail-polish remover and flesh-colored paint.

This request was for a female Shepard with pink hair because the person who requested it used a mod that specifically made their Shepard look like Lightning from Final Fantasy. I’m pretty pleased with this one; normally when I paint hair you can kinda tell it’s been repainted, but this one looks really smooth, probably in part because I started with blonde (Power Girl) hair and used a coat of white paint first to prime it. Maybe also because I bought this specific paint color rather than mixing it, but I hope that's not the case, because it's not real practical to buy every color I happen to need.

A few more basic customs by request, all versions of the Pepper/Rescue Funko I posted before. First there's a film-accurate one using the Iron Man 3 body (which was a pain to get, because it's somewhat rare and the first one I bought turned out to be a crappy ripoff version):

...and then there's this one using Civil War Iron Man, which is admittedly awkward for plot reasons but is also closer to the IM3 suit than the Age of Ultron body is.

Finally, this one is back to the Age of Ultron body but in a long-haired version using April from TMNT (because she was on clearance at Hot Topic...and apparently she's retired, so probably I should hang onto the other one I bought for the same purpose).

Another recent request: Blanche DuBois from the Young Vic production of A Streetcar Named Desire. The actual figure was really easy, all I did was add the polka dots (the base was Aubrey from Pitch Perfect), but the custom box that was requested–-as unimpressive as I’m sure it looks–-was...kind of a pain. (I am somewhat proud of the Pop! Theater logos I made, though.)

For the same person who requested Gillian Anderson as Blanche (the request was for both of them with boxes to get them signed at a convention), another Gillian Anderson character: Bedelia du Maurier from Hannibal. Again, the custom itself was pretty simple (head is Karen from Mean Girls with repainted hair, body is Felicity Smoak from Arrow with repainted blouse); the custom box was the harder part.

I've had several requests lately and I've gotten behind on posting them anywhere, so here's the first one: David Duchovny as seen on his Hell Or Highwater European tour. The body is from WWE Roddy Piper, because he's one of maybe four Funko figures wearing a kilt and the only one also wearing a t-shirt instead of period clothes, and the head is Michael Bluth from Arrested Development. His mic hand, either ironically or appropriately, is from Cigarette Smoking Man (a leftover from when I used his body to make Nick Valentine for another request). Obviously this figure required a full repaint (and let me tell you what, those shoelaces were a pain), but I also had to reposition his right arm and use clay to fill in the gaps between his arm and his new hand. Roddy was also wearing wristbands, which I tried to sand down with my rotary tool; you probably can't tell from the tiny picture, but he also has major ab muscles because, you know, he's a wrestler, and that didn't really match the David Duchovny pictures. So I used the rotary tool on his abs too and sanded them down, which was weird. The mic stand is made entirely of spare parts and I'm kind of proud of it for that reason; the mic itself is from TMNT April (I used her head for Pepper), the pole is from some Lego pieces I happened to have, and the base is scrap of some kind from a Lunar Module model I made when I was like 10.

One of my favorite things about taking requests is seeing how many people ask for another person’s RPG character for them as a gift (especially when it’s “I want to surprise my girlfriend with a Pop of her Shepard,” tbh). In this case, the recipient had customized his Fallout 4 Sole Survivor to look like himself, so I based my custom on a picture of him. The head is Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite with repainted eyes and a new beard; the body is a Sole Survivor with the hands repainted to match the skin on his face, or rather repeated attempts to do so that never quite matched, oops.

Another request: Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager, which was a cool project. The body is Deanna Troi from TNG, fully repainted to match Janeway's uniform (I just very carefully painted around Deanna's Starfleet symbol so I wouldn't have to reproduce it), and the head is an unmodified Agent Scully; she also has a repainted gun from my stash of Star Wars parts, which required detaching her hand from her side. The red part of her uniform is harder to see with her head in place, unfortunately, so I included a progress picture.

Because of my previous Blanche Pop being reblogged, I got a request for another one of those and one for her in one of her other costumes. The head is Edith from Crimson Peak, and the body is Katniss in her wedding dress, painted pink and with some of the decorative bits removed. The tiara is actually made of those cut-off bits, so that worked out well. Because Blanche is holding a bottle in the reference picture and I happened to have an extra Orphan Black Felix body, I also replaced one of her arms with his, with additional clay and repainting to make everything match.

I picked up an Age of Ultron Hawkeye on clearance a while ago figuring I could use him to make another Alistair; more recently, I also found Bronn on clearance and I grabbed him for the body, and last weekend I decided to slap the parts together so I could get at least one Pop box out of my room. (I…used to have a halfway-decent way of storing Pops I’d bought for parts, and then I kept buying them and ran out of room.) It turned out that Bronn’s head and neck were kind of weird so it took more time and effort than I expected, but I figured it out and now I have a cute Alistair bobblehead that I can easily make again if I get requests.

I stumbled across a Batman Funko at a thrift store, which didn't interest me much, but I figured since it was already kind of beat up, it was a prime candidate for repainting if I could think of a good theme. The obvious thing was to make another entry in Funko's little Impopsters line, because even the official ones are literally just repaints of Batman (and Batgirl) rather than new sculpts. There are only two classic Batman villains who have Pops I could use as a model but that haven't been made into Impopsters yet, Darkseid and Deathstroke, and Darkseid looked easier, so Darkseid it was. This custom just involved a lot of repainting, which I did on and off over one weekend, and Impopster Darkseid turned out pretty much the way I intended, so I’m pretty pleased with it.

Made this Darth Stitch custom as a Christmas gift for my sister (and her new baby’s Star Wars themed nursery). He’s a leftover Kylo Ren body with Stitch head, hands, and feet, plus a lightsaber from my stash of Star Wars stuff and a hood made from scrap velvet. I also discovered from this project that 1) Stitch is a lot harder to cut through than every other Funko figure I've used for customizing, which meant a lot of work with my rotary tool, and 2) making a hood like this is a pain in the ass.

Here's another custom I made as a Christmas gift, this one for my mom; it was originally Gidget from Secret Life of Pets, and to make it look like our Pomeranian mix Scully, I removed the bow and eyelashes, made new ears out of clay, and used two coats of paint in slightly different colors to look a little more like fur. As you can see, the real Scully is cuter than this Funko version of him, but I'm still pretty pleased with the final result (and with the fact that two of my Christmas gifts were hand-made, which is something I definitely haven't done in a long time).

Finally finished another personal project: Loki as seen in the Avengers Academy mobile game, because I love him and I need all the Lokis. (This is the third custom Loki I’ve made and honestly I need to get cracking because I have plans for, like, 10 more.) The body is a fully repainted Dark Knight Joker, the head is Unmasked Kylo Ren (whose hand I used for Matt the Radar Technician and whose body I used for Darth Stitch; it's always nice when I can make good use of everything), and the staff and magic are random fodder from my Star Wars stash.

I posted an in-progress Lokitty in "the adventures of tiny Loki and Thor" a while ago and then finished him not too long after but never got around to posting him, partly because I’m...not completely satisfied with the helmet? I’d been planning to make one with clay but I hate clay and that’s why it had taken me so long to make this otherwise extremely simple custom, so instead I used the helmet from one of my extra All Star Loki figures. I was hoping I’d be able to modify the helmet so it would still be removable, and then that I’d at least be able to use all the distinctive parts of it, but that ended up...not really working out, so it’s basically just the front and back of the helmet glued to his head. It looks okay from the front, so-so from the sides, and...not super great from the top and back. Fortunately the base cat was cheap (like $3.50 at my store) and pretty easy to paint, so if I figure out a better way to do it or I also want a helmetless Lokitty, I can just make another one. Also yes, the eyes were a huge pain in the ass to repaint; even a toothpick is a little too big for something that size.

My newest custom request: WWII Bucky Barnes, from the scene where Steve rescues him from HYDRA, to go with the requester's WWII Captain America. I’m really pleased with this one. Body is Sawyer from Lost with some rotary-tool work to get rid of the pockets and change the collar (Bucky's collar had a couple buttons, which I tried to replicate with dots of super glue, although it isn't really visible here), plus a lot of paint; head is Newt Scamander with repainted hair and stubble, dirt, and scratches; gun is from my general stash; and I made the dog tags from scratch out of beading wire and pieces of the plastic card from a pair of earrings.

Technically these wouldn't go under "custom figures" because they're...not figures, but whatever, they go under the general category of "fanart objects I made by repainting or otherwise customizing something else," and also it's my page which means I can post what I want. So! This is a project I've been working on for a little while now, inspired by similar designs I've seen mostly on Tumblr: Captain America shield necklaces repainted in various Pride colors, because the real Captain America stands for hope, justice, and equality for everybody, which absolutely includes LGBT+ folks. (Did ongoing garbage storylines in Marvel comics prompt me to hurry up and make these rather than waiting until I didn't have other projects going on? Mmmmmmaybe Yes. Obviously.)

The designs shown here are pretty much just examples; I made the ace one for myself as a test to see if this was a workable idea (answer: yes, and as long as I seal them with enamel spray, I can even use the paint I already have), but I can do pretty much any variety of Pride colors, and there's more information on my Tumblr. Feel free to reblog that post, too, if you have Tumblr and you think this is a cool idea.

One of several recent requests: Sarah Connor at the end of Terminator 2 after the battle with the T-1000. Her head is Ruby from Ash vs. the Evil Dead with repainting for the dirt and injuries, and the body is a fully repainted Kait Diaz with a lot of rotary-tool work pretty much everywhere (I forgot to take any good pictures at the time, but because the arms are attached to the gun and I had to do a lot with the body, I just took the arms off to work on everything separately, which made for a slightly disturbing little pile of parts). The bandage is from some dude's bandana thing in my Star Wars stash, and although they're kind of hard to see here, I also added shoulder straps for her ammo vest, which were leftovers from Drax's belt (cut off at the time because I didn't need it when I made Michael Corwin).

More gifts! I gotta say, having started a hobby that lets me actually make things for people is pretty cool sometimes. I made these Mothman figures for Jo as her birthday present last month. :D The bigger one started as an alien in my Star Wars stash with a lot of rotary-tool work and repainting, clay eyes, and wings from a Mayhem (Ghostbusters) figure I picked up on clearance.

Mothman Jr. started as a random little figure in a thrift-store grab bag; the new head is from some dude turning into a fly in a TMNT playset that I also found on clearance in a moment of total serendipity. Admittedly the smaller one turned out a little more Cthulhu-esque than I intended, but…oh well.

A recent request: Jefferson from Once Upon A Time, made from the body and head (well, most of the head) of Sherlock and the hat from the Mad Hatter (from Alice: Through the Looking Glass, specifically), plus some clay and a lot of glue because getting the hat on the head in a way that didn’t look awful was HARD. I also made the rings from bits of metal and plastic.

And hey, I think it's been a while since I've included any upsetting progress pictures, so...here you go! (This might also help illustrate why I said I used "most of" Sherlock's head and also why it was hard.)

Here's another recent request, the first of two for Hippodameia and arranged partly because of AO3, which was cool: a British WWI soldier, made from Jay Garrick’s head, the War Doctor’s body, a lot of paint, and several miscellaneous pieces from my stash. The shovel in particular I made from scraps-–the handle was something from a Lego set and the blade originally looked like that white thing in the last picture, which was some kind of leftover bit from a lunar module model set I got when I was like 10. The backpack came from my Star Wars stuff. The front pack was from a Spawn Crutch action figure I picked up on clearance for a couple bucks because I thought it might come in handy for parts; that was on his leg (minus the buckle, which was a leftover belt from Drax to cover up a weird hole).

The second of two figures Hippodameia requested: Dayna Mellanby from Blake’s 7. This was a fun project in part because I was able to use spare parts from other projects for pretty much everything, which if nothing else validated my pack-rat tendencies and made me feel clever for saving all my leftovers. The head is from Steve Hiller from Independence Day (I used the body for Matt the Radar Technician; for this, I used nail-polish remover to get rid of the mustache and then painted on eyelashes with a toothpick) and the body is from April O'Neil from TMNT (head used for Pepper). The clear dildo-looking part of the gun (I mean...that is what it looks like, and yes, that’s a gun) came from the bottom of that little Toy Story alien and I honestly have no idea what it was-–a cake topper, maybe? It was just in some thrift-store grab bag. The rest of the gun came from Lego bits, the cord was part of the whip from an extra Aveline de Grandpre figure I bought, the pouch was another leftover from Drax’s belt, the earrings were jump rings, and the necklace was most of a medal from my Star Wars stash.

Similar to the Pride Cap necklaces (although I actually thought of and made these first): some cute little Cap figures with his shield repainted in relevant Pride colors, because the real Captain America stands for freedom and justice for everyone (also let's be real, he's not straight, come on). At the moment I have Super Hero Squad figure of two different varieties with shields in LGBT rainbow, bisexual, and pansexual pride colors, and one Funko Pocket Pop with the shield repainted in bisexual pride colors. I am absolutely not doing one of those again because that shield is TOO DAMN SMALL.

My most recent custom request: Angie Martinelli from Agent Carter, shown in her waitress uniform. The base here was Aubrey from Pitch Perfect, which I've used at least once before for a different custom request; here, I started by removing her head and arms so I could actually get to everything (and then, naturally, I had a hard time getting the head and arms back on even though that was their original state). Repainting her hair was pretty easy. The body took more work: I painted the straps on her shoes; used my rotary tool to shave down Aubrey's scarf, neckline, and sash bow; repainted her dress with appropriate colors; and then used bits of a credit-card sleeve to make the collar, cuffs, pocket (with handkerchief), apron, and...the bit in the middle on her shirt where the buttons would be. I don't know what that's called. The pocket was especially tough--those bits of plastic were tiny, so just aside from the fact that I still haven't found ideal tools for handling tiny things, I had to fight static-cling issues too.

Another extremely simple custom: unmasked Trini from the 2017 Power Rangers film, made by putting a Kait Diaz head (left over from Sarah Connor) on a Yellow Ranger body. I mentioned I was having a hard time finding an appropriate head and then realized, well, I already had this leftover head and I'm pretty sure Trini wore a hat like this at some point, so...sure, why not. (There's no reason for her to wear a hat like this with the suit, of course, but...it is what it is.)

An older request that I forgot to post for some reason: a custom male Ryder from Mass Effect: Andromeda, made from Liam Kosta’s body (closest thing to a male Ryder so far, which I find a little annoying for this very specific purpose but otherwise I'd say it's fair, considering there never was an official Funko FemShep) and the head of Elliot from Mr. Robot. Liam had two omnitools, so I cut off one and repainted that arm; I also fully repainted the hair and added the scratches, goatee, and tattoo to match the Ryder in question. As usual, I made the scratches by first slicing him up a little bit with a utility knife and then kind of rubbing multiple colors of red and reddish-brown paint into the scratches. That probably sounds bad. I used a toothpick to paint the tattoos, which is how I generally paint anything small, because I basically don't know what I'm doing where detail work is involved.

And because it's related, here are some recent custom Shepards. The blonde is a repainted Claire Randall (who is now, to my surprise, retired and expensive...which sucks because there are very few Funko figures with their hair in a bun); the redhead with the male-type body uses the head of Lilith from Borderlands, but repainted so it's all red; and the last one is a great new way to do default FemShep, with Sydney Bristow's head and Sara Ryder in N7 armor, exclusive to Best Buy. The female body is closer to what FemShep actually wears in-game--without boobplate armor, though!--and probably unsurprisingly, it's way easier to do head swaps between similar body types rather than putting a female head on a male body, because female Funko figures pretty much always have thinner neck pegs and neck holes than male figures do.

I’ve fallen a little behind on posting these, but here’s a recent request: Lance Tucker from the 2015 film The Bronze, played by Sebastian Stan, for the same person who wanted Jefferson from Once Upon a Time (sensing a theme?). This is a repainted Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell, with a Barbie water bottle and sunglasses from an American Girl Mega Construx set I happened to find on clearance (after spending way too long fruitlessly searching for action-figure sunglasses in stores and online, deciding I'd have to make some, and losing a ridiculous amount of time down a rabbit hole of overly complicated Youtube videos).

Another recent custom, this one as a gift: Bones from Star Trek TOS. This was a pretty simple one; I used the body of Bones from Star Trek: Beyond and just repainted his insignia and wrist stripes gold, and did a head swap with a leftover male Lone Wanderer head (which was awesome, because I always love it when I can use leftover pieces--and actually in this case I used the original Bones head for a different project, so this was a good use of parts all around).

My most recent finished custom Funko, also a Christmas gift: Josephine Montilyet from Dragon Age: Inquisition. This was…kind of a complicated one (but Lyviel’s astonished, delighted gasp when she opened it made the whole project worthwhile). The head and body are both Miss Peregrine, with some rotary-tool work and a lot of repainting, but the arms are from a leftover Edith Cushing body (the head was used for Blanche), which is also where I got the candle for her fantasy clipboard thing (the fantasy clipboard thing itself is half a leftover book from Sawyer, leftover from Bucky). Her sashes are cloth and ribbon, with a little piece of chain for the necklace. I also used chalk pastels to darken the skin on her face, which…is why she sort of looks dirty instead, whoops. I was trying to find a method that wouldn’t require me to repaint her eyebrows and eyelashes, but it only kind of worked.

I made this by request as part of a fandom charity auction to support disaster relief in Puerto Rico. The head is Sawyer from Lost (a leftover from WWII Bucky, which was really handy; I'm always extra pleased when I can make use of leftover parts) with repainted hair and eyebrows, and the body is a repainted John Oliver.

Another recent request, this one for the wonderful Hippodameia, who previously requested Dayna Mellanby and a WWI soldier: Adam from Only Lovers Left Alive, because of course the world needs a Funko figure of Tom Hiddleston’s broody vampire. For this one, I used an Allison Reynolds head and the body of Carlos from Descendants (full repaint plus a lot of rotary-tool work), with Coulson’s sunglasses.

This was a fairly simple one, made using a Jessica Jones head, a repainted Mohawk Storm body, and some of the claws from a Wolverine action figure I randomly picked up ages ago at a thrift store. (They did not especially want to be glued onto somebody else’s hands, but I eventually prevailed.)

WHAT UP Y'ALL IT’S BLACK SUIT LOKI. I knew I had to make this as soon as I saw it in the set photos, mostly because it’s way simpler than any other Loki custom I’ve planned but also this was such a Look and Funko should’ve made this an official variant, honestly. I actually have three versions: the one with knives out is for me, because I had a leftover Coulson body (I used my rotary tool to sand off his badge, and the knives are part of Loki’s dagger from his Dark World Funko); the second one uses Brenner from Stranger Things and will be available soon to anyone who might be interested; and the last one was made by request for mojobaby75, using a John Oliver body that was even easier to deal with than Brenner (unfortunately, because it looks like the John Oliver Funko is retired now). I do feel sort of bad using any Loki figure for parts, especially because now I have at least a couple sad headless Ragnarok Loki bodies and I don't know what to do with them, but…you do what you gotta do.

In case anyone is curious, I am definitely going to make a Dorbz version of this, I have been thinking about ways to make black suit Loki in other formats like a standard 6-inch action figure, and I already did my own black suit Loki cosplay. :D

Kikkan Randall is from my hometown, so when she won a gold medal in the Winter Olympics this year, the Anchorage Assembly decided to do a resolution honoring her. One of the assembly members has worked with my dad, who's mentioned my customizing hobby, and this assembly member thought it would be fun to present Kikkan with a custom Funko figure of herself in her Olympic gear. It ended up being an even bigger, more complicated project than I expected (further complicated by some issues with some of his emails getting caught in a spam filter I didn't even know existed, so that was awkward) that I had to crank out in a relatively short length of time given the complexity, but I think it turned out really well, and Kikkan thought it was cool enough to post on her Instagram.

My version has a little more pink in her hair than the real Kikkan does, but...it's her trademark and I liked the color so I maybe went a little overboard. I ended up going to the actual assembly meeting as well, so I got a bad picture of Kikkan showing off her medal and her Funko figure, and then an actual picture with her ("Want to hold my medal?" she asked. "Sure!" I said, and then learned firsthand that Olympic medals are a lot heavier than they look and I have no idea how people wear them for any longer than a few minutes at a time, let alone multiple medals at once).

This one was complicated mostly because there weren't any existing figures that worked well without a lot of modification. The assembly member suggested using one of the blank DIY Funko figures, but I didn't want everything to be totally flat and I really can't do any of my own sculpting, so I ended up going with Nina Williams because the hair was a good base and I figured I could work with the body...but the thing about that is, Nina Williams is a female character in a Tekken fighting game and she looks it, which is to say she's dressed in something that amounts to fetish gear, and I had to do a lot of work with my rotary tool to get rid of all the extra straps and things. By the time I was done, the body looked like this, and that's where I started for my repaint:

The stripes were made with little bits of washi tape, because I knew there was no way I could paint those (the Olympic rings on her chest were hard enough, and then of course they got partly covered up); the medal was from my stash of Star Wars stuff; and the ski poles were from a Duplo set or something, but I cut them down, repainted the handles, and added orange foil from a candy wrapper to make them look more like the ones Kikkan actually used.

Jason is a leftover head from a Fallout 4 Vault Dweller, Billy is Steve Hiller from Independence Day (leftover from Matt the Radar Technician), and Zack is Sulu from Star Trek: Beyond.

Finally a new personal project: Thor from Avengers Academy, which shut down at the beginning of February and I’m still sad about it. Obviously, I made this one mostly to go with the Avengers Academy Loki I already made. I also meant to finish this like...a month and a half ago, but that didn't happen, although I did finish one last AvAc fic just barely in time.

The body is mostly Merle from The Walking Dead, which I found loose and mildly beat up at a thrift store, plus arms from Angel (which I originally bought to make Thor but realized when I got more serious about it recently that it didn't work as well, so...very handy I'd accidentally found Merle a while ago). The head is Phoebe Buffay, which is a great sign of how long ago I started working on this and then dropped it for ages, because I bought that one when it was a totally reasonable price and now it's been vaulted long enough (and was rare enough in the first place, maybe?) that it's worth almost $100. Also the face actually looks kind of terrible because for some reason male and female Funko faces are made somewhat differently--the female faces are generally painted instead of just being skin-colored plastic, which in practice means that if you buy a female figure intending to use the head for a male figure, and you try to take the eyelashes off neatly with nail polish remover, it DOESN'T WORK because it strips off some of the skin paint too, and that's why I had to repaint the whole face. Honestly this is also a good example of why you should either make a thing shortly after buying parts for it, or not touch the parts until you're definitely for sure ready to make the whole thing, because at this point if I could resell Phoebe and find a different head, I absolutely would. Oh well, can't fix that now. Anyway, the hammer came from a horrible knockoff Thor figure I picked up on eBay ages ago, repainted silver because it was black for some reason, and the round things on Thor's jacket are little holes punched out of a Diet Coke can. The red parts on his shoulders aren't very visible with all that hair, unfortunately, which sucks because they required kind of a lot of work and about a million layers of glue and paint.

 I repainted this Wonder Woman shield a year and a half ago and I honestly don’t know why I never got around to posting it, but: I got a nice 12” Wonder Woman figure that didn’t have a shield and I wanted one, so when I found a Wonder Woman Barbie on clearance for $5, I took the cheap plastic shield from that and spruced it up. Originally this was all a plain yellow/gold color, and honestly the Amazon pictures make it look nicer than it really did before I painted it. These pictures I took are more accurate.

A semi-recent requested custom I’m not sure why I didn’t post months ago: Adam from Only Lovers Left Alive, with completely different parts from the first one I did because of changing availability. The head is a repainted Aragorn; the body is Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park (also where the sunglasses came from), without the ring and with various modifications to the shirt to look more like Adam's outfit. You basically can't tell because of the giant head, but I left part of the necklace disappearing under his shirt. The nearly empty glass of blood in his hand came from my general stash of spare parts and I think it was reddish to begin with, but I mixed some red paint with a little bit of clear glue to make it a bit more three-dimensional and then stuck some of that inside.

Check it OUT, I finally finished a personal project for the first time in BASICALLY FOREVER. This is a young MCU Loki (as opposed to 616 Kid Loki, who pretty much only ever wears one outfit and it doesn't look like this), made because I found a really nice Draco Malfoy doll at Goodwill for like three bucks several months ago and wanted to do something with it. His hair and eyebrows are completely repainted--I'm especially proud of the eyebrows, because I'm usually not very good at detail work and even though these eyebrows might not be perfect, they look pretty damn good and a lot better than any similar Funko eyebrows I've repainted. I also VERY CAREFULLY used some extremely watered-down paint to make his eyes more green (like, you can still kind of tell they used to be blue, but at least now they're greenish-blue instead of just blue) and then finished with a little clear nail polish so his eyes would be shinier than the rest of his face. I did make one brief attempt to make his lips a little darker, using actual makeup because I wasn't sure I could do it right, and in fact it didn't work so I decided his lips weren't bad enough to risk completely messing them up.

I had a few different requests come in for Christmas and for a while there I was VERY BUSY. The first one I finished was Robert Smith from The Cure, made from a Kingdom Hearts Sora head and Brian May body (plus some clay to give him an undershirt). This ended up being a lot more complicated than I expected, in part because I had to remove the guitar and arms to be able to repaint everything properly, and I messed up the makeup the first time so then I had to repaint his entire face.

And here's a last-minute little personal project for Christmas (as in, I stayed up until 1 a.m. the next before, RIP me): I thought it would be fun for my niece and nephew to have personalized 2020 ornaments of some kind but I couldn't figure out how, and by the time I thought of it, it was way too late to order something. Then I stumbled across a couple knockoff Lego figures I wasn’t otherwise planning to use. I made their little masks from pieces of a disposable mask, which took...longer than you’d expect, to be honest. I also originally wasn’t going to use the Santa hats but then had a genius idea when I couldn’t figure out how to attach Wonder Woman’s hanger without drilling through her head, so then they both got hats.

My most recent customs, made by request: a husband-and-wife team of vault dwellers from Fallout 76. The figures themselves didn’t get much modification—for the guy, I stuck glasses from Alex Wilder on the Fallout 4 Sole Survivor, and for the female character, I took a Fallout 3 Lone Wanderer and painted her hair pink—but their weapons were a little more complicated. I added a bunch of bits to the dude’s gun to make it look more like an in-game homemade rifle, and for the female vault dweller, I cut off her gun and made her a mole miner gauntlet from scratch. I used...8 or 9 random little bits of stuff from various sources, none of which looked anything like that before I painted them, and they were all VERY SMALL and boy did I SUPER NOTICE how my hands are nearly always shaking at least a little bit! I mean, I notice that every time I try to do any type of detail work, but when super glue and tiny bits of plastic are involved, I really notice.

Finally finished something--Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) from The Night Manager was another request from Hippodameia, for whom I made Adam (also Tom Hiddleston) from Only Lovers Left Alive a while ago, so obviously there's a bit of a theme going that I'm happy to encourage. To make him, I used the head of Pacey from Dawson's Creek and repainted the hair, combined with the fully repainted body of Date Night Hopper from Stranger Things.

This was also the first custom where I tried using primer before painting, which probably tells you something about just how much I'm making this all up as I go--like, I literally just read that you should start with primer when painting D&D miniatures, and I sort of went "oh huh, I wonder if that's why the first layer of paint often doesn't seem like it wants to stick when I paint Funko figures, maybe this will make my life easier especially with trying to turn that ridiculous shirt white!" And...it absolutely did not...? I don't know if the problem was that I used a cheap Krylon paint+primer combo that is maybe intended to be the only paint you use, or that it's intended for use with something other than acrylic paint, or that my particular acrylic paint is cheap craft-store stuff that I really need to replace, or some combination of the above, but it kinda seemed more like it was trying to repel the paint, actually! So...I guess I won't bother with primer next time, and also I have a nearly full can of paint/primer that might be useless to me? Or maybe it would be fine with slightly more high-quality paint, I don't know.

I’ve been wanting a pin of Loki as Captain America from Thor: The Dark World (well, from the deleted scene where Tom wore the Cap suit, really) and haven’t figured out anything I could mod; to my knowledge, nobody but MibuStore has actually made a Loki Cap design, which is a tragedy because it’s an extremely good concept. Anyway it only occurred to me embarrassingly recently that this would be a super easy custom figure to make with the right knockoff Lego minifigs, even easier than knockoff-LEGO black suit Loki, and here we are. The hardest part was finding a Cap figure with the correct suit and then waiting for the parts to get here.

Another extremely easy custom figure, where the hardest parts were figuring out which knockoff-LEGO minis to buy and then waiting for them to arrive: Loki in an Endgame quantum suit, like we would’ve seen in canon if there were a sliver of justice in the world. It could theoretically be Loki in bedlamsbard's amazing AU fic “On Yonder Hill,” although I’d have to pick either a grimmer or sadder face for him to use while holding the scepter if I wanted to be accurate. Probably other fics too, except frankly there aren’t enough on the basic concept of either “how does Endgame play out if Loki’s there with Thor” or “what if Loki survives IW instead of Thor” and that’s very sad. (I wrote a version of the latter, although I don't know that any theoretical followups to that fic would put Loki in a quantum suit. They wouldn't have a five-year timeskip, that's for sure.) 

Anyway I'm still planning to make a Funko version of this, because that was my original idea and I bought the parts like...a year or more ago, but then I stalled out because I wanted that Loki to have his knives too and I'm still not sure of the best way to attach them to the Ant-Man body. This one I could finish as soon as I got the parts.

My latest project, when I...probably should have been working on other things whoops: a custom Funko figure of a cyberpunk Loki. violincat3000 on Instagram was doing a DTIYS for a cool cyberpunk Loki fanart, and I thought, okay, I don't actually know how to draw, but I do still have the vast majority of that bin of Star Wars action figures I got free from a professor 10+ years ago that I've been dipping into for custom fodder ever since, so I'm almost positive I could make a custom figure of some kind instead. and then as usual I kept putting it off because I do that and also I thought it would be pretty easy, and I did it all at the absolute last minute, and it took way longer than I expected, as most things do. (I mean, part of that is probably because I ended up watching literally all of The Essex Serpent while finishing it, so I kept getting distracted, but also I’m very bad about underestimating the time it takes to do things. Which is why this took most of two days instead of a few hours and also why I was up until 3 am the night I finished. OOPS.)

The head (Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park, minus glasses) and body (Officer K from Blade Runner 2049) were leftovers from earlier customs, with some repainting. The little green flame was repainted fire from a leftover Liz Sherman body. Most of the bits making up Loki’s headset/implants were from a big bag of random Star Wars stuff, also with some repainting, because I wanted something to suggest Loki’s horns, and because I needed to cover up the holes in the middle of his forehead and the sides of his head, all where the glasses used to attach. The gold thing is just a wide twist tie. I made the big green visor from scratch out of a soda bottle and the innards of a busted keyboard. (It’s terrible. This is why I never throw things away: every so often, I find a great use for them and then my existing magpie tendencies just get reinforced.) And then I cut down and repainted one of several spare scepters from cheap 3.75-inch Loki figures I got specifically for customizing purposes—I usually don’t like that the scepter is so closely associated with Loki because it’s something Thanos gave him and it was as much a leash as a weapon, but repainted like this I’m just gonna say it’s a totally normal setting-appropriate short sword of some kind that just happens to resemble the scepter. It's kind of hard to tell because it mostly looks reflective rather than gold, but I stuck some gold foil on the bottom of his coat, leftovers from a lunar module kit I made when I was like 10. (I don't have the model anymore, but I did save some of the leftover bits for exactly this kind of purpose, and this isn't the first time I've used some of them. Like I said, magpie. Or packrat, or hoarder.) The props around him are also from the Star Wars stash.

For obvious reasons I've always made black suit Loki with his head and somebody else's body, but once the show came out I figured maybe I could modify a show!Loki figure to have a normal belt buckle and tie instead, which would be great because I'd only have to use one figure that way. It...sort of worked.

I mean he doesn't look terrible but it was a lot more difficult than I expected and it still looks kind of rough, unfortunately, even after a lot of work with my rotary tool and some clay.

This was just a silly, very temporary thing for a little Sylki Halloween event in 2024--the idea was to make fanart of Loki and Sylvie in a couples costume, and I can't draw, but after digging through my stash I discovered that I had extra Tenth Doctor and River Song bodies, so I did a temporary head swap long enough to take a couple photos.

we'll, uh, just ignore the part where River/Doctor is tragic and doomed, and focus on the part where they're also time travelers.
