Work Text:
Kaveh and Alhaitham have a happy relationship, they loved each other dearly, even if they argued at every opportunity. They just got each other, even if they were almost complete opposites. Kaveh and Alhaitham never said anything they meant, they were all empty insults and petty threats.
“You’re cooking is shit.” I love watching you improve, it’s so motivating.
“Do you ever leave the house?” What did you do today, love?
“I wish you would just move out finally!” Don’t leave me. Ever.
“You’re such a fucking narcissist!” You have every right to be, you’re gorgeous.
“I hate it when you get like this!” I love everything about you.
“I hate you!” I love you.
Their dynamic was admittedly strange to an outsider's view, but for them it was perfect. They loved each other, sure sometimes one of them would take it too far, but they would always make up in the end.
But the words said can’t be unsaid.

“Just accept the fact that you’re wrong for once in your life, you self-righteous asshole!” Kaveh shouted, sticking his pointer finger into Alhaitham’s sternum. Alhaitham sighed and sat back down on the couch, picking up his book and carefully setting the bookmark aside.
“I’m not accepting it because I’m ‘self-righteous’, It’s because you’re the one who’s wrong. Not me.” Alhaitham said simply, continuing to read his book.
Kaveh’s face burned with anger, how dare he be reading at a time like this? His attention should be on him ! Kaveh stormed forward and knocked the book out of Alhaitham’s hand, “At the very least have some manners and look at me when I’m talking to you!” Kaveh snapped
Alhaitham had a short fuse, much like Kaveh, and apparently today’s fuse had been shorter than usual, “You don’t want me to look at you because of proper manners, you want me to look at you because you’re obsessed with me! It’s sad, you know that? Seeing how desperate you are for my constant praise and approval that you resort to these last ditch efforts of getting my attention.” Alhaitham snarled, picking his book up off the ground. Alhaitham was about to continue reading when what he had just said dawned on him. Alhaitham messily put his bookmark in his book and stood up, “Kaveh,” He began, but was immediately cut off by Kaveh lowering his head and storming out of the house. Fuck.
Alhaitham followed after him, “Kaveh, I’m sorry you know I didn’t mean it. Let’s talk, please?” Alhaitham pleaded, hurriedly following Kaveh to god-knows-where. Kaveh abruptly stopped, almost making Alhaitham run into his back.
“You think you’re so much fucking better than me?” Kaveh yelled, not caring if the entirety of Sumeru City heard this, “You think just because I had to move in with you, I’m some weak, useless fuck? Because I’m not Alhaitham. I don’t need you accusing me of being obsessed with you when we both know that isn’t true. If it was, then why the hell are we still together?” Kaveh blinked away the tears in his eyes, he was not going to let Alhaitham see him cry right now.
Alhaitham’s face darkened, “You tell me.” He said simply, “Why are we still together?” Kaveh looked heartbroken, he knew he was making the situation worse, but he was just so…upset! Kaveh frowned, “Alhaitham, I’m so sorry…I didn’t mean it like that-“ He started, reaching for Alhaitham.
Alhaitham roughly pulled his arm away, turning away from Kaveh. Kaveh felt his heart splitting in half. He tripped over his feet trying to reach out once more to Alhaitham, “Haitham! Please! Tell me I’m enough to make you stay!” Kaveh cried, tears already falling on the ground below him before he was even able to process he was crying, “Tell me you won’t leave me again!” He screamed out to know one in particular.
Alhaitham felt hurt by everything Kaveh said, and as much as he wanted to comfort Kaveh right now, he just couldn’t find it in himself to feel sympathy right now. He turned toward Kaveh’s shaking form on the ground.
Kaveh sobbed into his hand, looking up to look into Alhaitham’s eyes, “Was I not enough?” He whispered through tears, Alhaitham’s heart twisted in his chest and as much as his heart told him to stop before it’s too late, Alhaitham looked down at Kaveh’s blood crimson eyes and said,
“You were too much.”
