A Lesson On Infantilization

Summary:

This takes place just after the events of the fic "Socializing Izuku" in this series and it is to address the accidental wrongdoing of many of the girls in UA and teach them better about their accidental infantilization. It also serves to add a little extra information on society itself and the treatment of quirkless people.

Work Text:

As soon as Nezu and Izuku had left the class after they met Izuku, Momo turned to the other girls with disgust on her face, she didn’t know if they were trying to be offensive or were just ignorant of how awful what they’d been doing could be.

“That was not ok. I don’t know if you mean to be offensive or are just ignorant, I hope you’re just ignorant for your sake but honestly that was terrible.” Aizawa decided to let Momo explain this one.

Mina was confused “What do you mean, what did we do?”

Momo grimaced and said “The constant talk about how cute and adorable Izuku is during that entire time he was here could be seen as incredibly offensive to anyone quirkless or part of certain minorities. It’s called infantilizing and it is used to get rid of autonomy and the ability to get anyone to not listen to specific groups because of the idea that  “Oh they’re blank so they do not know what they’re saying since they’re underdeveloped and under evolved.”

Uraraka gasped “What!? I’m sorry, I didn’t know, I thought calling someone adorable or cute was a compliment!”

Aizawa took over from there “It is, but when used repetitively it can become demeaning and infantilizing. It’s something you need to be careful of, especially with the tone of voice you use when saying it, or talking to Izuku. I’m sure Izuku knows you didn’t mean to be offensive but you need to understand the reality that it could sound pretty offensive. Our next unit was about talking to victims anyways so we’ll talk about everything from infantilizing to sexism and homophobia. Being aware of what things could be offensive is very important in heroism.”

Shinsou then said “One of the reasons infantilizing quirkless people is so offensive is because of their lack of legal rights. You saw that Izuku is legally able to be a service animal, that’s because Nezu legally owns Izuku even though they act more like family. Quirkless people are treated like property, pets, or occasionally slaves, and it’s all legal. I knew a kid who after being diagnosed Quirkless was sold to a rich family that used her as a pet and something to gawk at during their parties.”

Aizawa nodded and explained to the kids. “Izuku was legally bought by Nezu at the age of seven, Nezu paid 6000 yen (about 44 American dollars) for Izuku. That was what his father was selling Izuku for. The father encouraged Nezu to treat Izuku like a pet since he was “Useless for anything else since he’s quirkless”. Quirkless people can’t testify in court or be questioned by a detective without their owner being present and having told them to tell the absolute truth and nothing more. Do you remember that detective at the USJ and a few of the other incidents? That’s Tsukauchi, he’s known Izuku since Nezu bought him. Tsukauchi has fired 10 officers due to their refusal to believe the word of a quirkless person simply because they didn’t have a quirk. If you show any sign of quirkism, racism, or sexism, most places won’t hire you, you won’t be able to even be a sidekick, and it’ll get worse when those people leak it to the public. So get rid of any offensive ideologies now while you still can because the world won’t be kind to you. There are groups that specialize in killing and maiming heroes who’ve been outed as being terrible people.”

The lesson had been taught effectively.
