Chapter 1: What? Did you say that I have a brother?
Chapter Text
Naoto was in the living room watching a famous series about a pawn shop when his mother appeared there with some urgent news
Naomi Hachioji: Son, we have to talk, stop what you're doing because it's urgent
Naoto Hachioji: What happened?! Did someone die?
Naomi Hachioji: Yes, and someone close to us
Naoto ran to the kitchen to see what his mother had to say to him, naturally, it was bad news.
Naoto Hachioji: What happened? Who died?
Naomi took a deep breath and said
Naomi Hachioji: your father died yesterday, apparently he was murdered by his most recent wife
Naoto Hachioji: And how do you feel about that?
Note: Naoto only saw his father
through photos, since he abandoned her the day he was born and he even kidnapped Naoto's twin as if nothing had happened
Naomi Hachioji: You know, I feel sad about that, even if your father was an alcoholic and womanizer, no one deserves to be murdered
Note: Naomi's relationship with Naoto's father was already strained, it was so much so that he only showed up at the maternity just to take Noburo and go away, Naomi separated from him while still pregnant
Naoto Hachioji: Well, what happens now?
Naomi Hachioji: Well, you will inherit your assets along with your brother.
Naoto Hachioji: Brother?! What brother?!
Note: Naomi never told Naoto about Noburo's existence
Naomi Hachioji: Your twin brother, he's the same age as you
Naoto Hachioji: Why did you never say anything about him?
Said Naoto angry
Naomi Hachioji: Because if I told you, you would be saddened by the circumstance and maybe it would make you sad, I preferred to spare you that suffering
Naoto Hachioji still angry went to drink some chamomile tea to calm down, Naomi even said that he would move to their house, so it looks like Naoto will share a room with Noburo for the first time since they shared the space in his mother's womb with him
Noburo was back to his mother, and now he was going to finish studying at the school where Naoto studied.
How will these brothers live together? Will they get along with each other?
Chapter 2: Getting used to a new person in my home
Chapter Text
Naoto Hachioji: I can’t believe this. You’re telling me I have a twin brother who was kidnapped by my father and now he’s coming to live with us?
Naomi Hachioji: Yes, that’s what I’m telling you. And you have to be nice to him, he’s been through a lot of bad situations
Naoto Hachioji: How do you know that? Did you ever talk to him?
Naomi Hachioji: No, but I saw him on the news. He was the one who found your father’s body. He was stabbed by his stepmother during a rage episode.
Naoto Hachioji: What?! That’s horrible!
Naomi Hachioji: I know, right? And his stepmother killed herself after that
Naoto Hachioji: That is twice as horrible
Naomi Hachioji: So, that's why he need our help, he will live here now
Naoto Hachioji: But we’re not his family. He doesn’t even know us.
Naomi Hachioji: He does now. And you’re his brother, whether you like it or not.
Naoto Hachioji: Fine. But don’t expect me to be his best friend. We’re strangers.
Naomi Hachioji: Just give him a chance, okay? He’ll be here soon.
Naoto Hachioji sighed and finished his tea. He wondered what his brother looked like, if he had anything in common with him, if he hated him for being the one who stayed with their mother. He was curious about his brother
He heard the doorbell ring and his mother went to open it. He followed her and saw a boy standing on the porch. He had the same black hair and brown eyes as Naoto, but he was taller and more muscular. He wore a leather jacket and jeans, and had a scar on his cheek.
He looked at Naoto with a wary expression and said
Noburo Hachioji: Hi. I’m Noburo. You must be Naoto.
Naoto Hachioji: Yeah. I’m Naoto.
They stared at each other for a few seconds, feeling awkward and uncomfortable.
Naomi Hachioji: Come in, Noburo. Welcome to your new home.
She smiled and hugged him, then led him inside.
Naoto Hachioji followed them, feeling like his life had just turned upside down.
He wondered how he was going to get along with his brother, who seemed so different from him. He hoped they could at least be civil to each other, if not friends.
He was about to find out soon enough
Naomi Hachioji showed Noburo his new room, which was actually Naoto’s room. She had moved Naoto’s bed to one side and brought another one for Noburo.
Naomi Hachioji: I hope you don’t mind sharing a room with your brother. We don’t have much space here.
Noburo Hachioji: It’s fine. I can sleep anywhere.
Naoto Hachioji: Yeah, well, this is my room. So don’t touch my stuff.
Noburo Hachioji: Don’t worry. I won’t.
Naomi Hachioji: Okay, boys. I’ll leave you to settle in. Dinner will be ready soon.
She left the room and closed the door behind her.
Naoto Hachioji and Noburo Hachioji looked around the room. It was small and cozy, with a window overlooking the street. There were posters of anime characters and video games on the walls, and a bookshelf full of manga and novels. There was also a desk with a laptop and a guitar.
Noburo Hachioji: So, you like anime and video games?
Naoto Hachioji: Yeah. So what?
Noburo Hachioji: Nothing. Just asking.
Naoto Hachioji: What do you like?
Noburo Hachioji: I like music and sports. And girls.
Naoto Hachioji: Of course you do.
Noburo Hachioji: What’s that supposed to mean?
Naoto Hachioji: Nothing. Just saying.
They fell silent, feeling the tension between them.
Noburo Hachioji decided to break the ice and said
Noburo Hachioji: Hey, do you want to play some video games? Maybe we can find something we both like.
Naoto Hachioji hesitated for a moment, then said
Naoto Hachioji: Sure. Why not?
He got up and turned on his console. He handed Noburo a controller and said
Naoto Hachioji: Here. You can choose the game.
Noburo Hachioji smiled and said
Noburo Hachioji: Thanks. Let’s see what you have.
He browsed through the games and picked one that looked fun.
Noburo Hachioji: How about this one? It’s a racing game.
Naoto Hachioji: Okay. Let’s play.
They sat on their beds and started playing. They soon found out that they were both good at the game, and they enjoyed competing with each other. They laughed and cheered as they raced
They played for a while, then paused the game and decided to talk.
Noburo Hachioji: So, tell me about your life. How was it growing up with mom?
Naoto Hachioji: It was okay. She’s a good mom. She works as a manager in a great company. She always took care of me and supported me.
Noburo Hachioji: That’s nice. Did she ever date anyone?
Naoto Hachioji: Not really. She said she didn’t have time for that. She said she only loved dad, even though he left her.
Noburo Hachioji: That’s sad.
Naoto Hachioji: Yeah. What about you? How was it growing up with dad?
Noburo Hachioji: It was…not okay. He was a bad dad. He drank a lot and gambled a lot. He always moved from one place to another, and married different women. He never took care of me or supported me.
Naoto Hachioji: That’s awful.
Noburo Hachioji: Yeah. He never loved me. He only loved himself. So egocentric!
They looked at each other and felt a pang of sympathy for each other.
Naoto Hachioji: I’m sorry you had to go through that.
Noburo Hachioji: I’m sorry you had to miss him.
They nodded and smiled slightly.
Noburo Hachioji: Hey, do you go to school?
Naoto Hachioji: Yeah. I go to the local high school. I’m in the tenth grade.
Noburo Hachioji: Me too. I guess we’ll be in the same class then.
Naoto Hachioji: Really? That’s cool.
Noburo Hachioji: Yeah. Maybe we can help each other out with homework and stuff.
Naoto Hachioji: Sure. Why not?
They resumed playing the game, feeling a bit closer to each other. They realized they had more in common than they thought. They were both smart and talented, and they both wanted to make their mother proud.
They decided to give their brotherhood a chance. Maybe they could be friends after all.
Chapter 3: Face-to-face with a ginger girl
Chapter Text
Naoto Hachioji: So, do you like playing card games?
Asked Naoto, trying to see what he could play with his brother, after all, until yesterday they did not know about each other's existence, so the first step was to understand how Noburo works
Noburo Hachioji: More or less, Some friends from my old school showed me some games
Naoto Hachioji: And which card games do you know how to play?
Asked Naoto, trying to see what his brother would propose
Noburo Hachioji: Well, I know how to play blackjack, wanna try it?
Said Noburo, showing a suggestion he thought at that moment
Naoto Hachioji: of course, why not? Let's go!
Agreed Naoto, excited by the idea
They started playing and soon got involved in the match, each card that was revealed had a different sensation and emotion
Naoto was more experienced with the tactical game but Noburo was a trickster and knew how to bluff
While they were playing, their mother came and prepared juice for them, she came and gave a glass of strawberry juice to each of them
Naomi Hachioji: You guys are getting along well, right?
Their mother asked, observing the physiognomy of the two.
Naoto Hachioji: Yes, mom. He's very nice.
Said Naoto, hugging Noburo by the shoulder and showing sympathy for him
Noburo Hachioji: He is a nice person too, he has treated me very well since I arrived here
Naomi Hachioji: That's good, my children. I'm so glad to see you together.
Said Naomi Hachioji, thrilled to see her two children together, so many nights she dreamed of Noburo's return and her dream came true
Naoto and Noburo thanked them for the good words and the love their mother had for them
They talked about their friends and about a lot of other things that people talk about during a conversation
Noburo Hachioji: So, do you have a girlfriend?
Asked Noburo, curious to know if he had a sister-in-law
Naoto Hachioji: I don't have it. I never had.
Replied Naoto, embarrassed by this lack of a person to share life with
Noburo Hachioji: What do you mean? You are so handsome, smart, nice... you must have several girls interested in you.
Praised Noburo, trying to throw his brother's morals up
Naoto Hachioji: It's not quite like that. I'm very shy, and I don't know how to approach girls. I also don't have much free time, because I study a lot.
Naoto explained, showing that his shyness was very strong
Noburo Hachioji: I understand. But you don't have to be afraid to express yourself, you know? Girls like guys who are sincere, with their feelings, and who care about them.
Advised Noburo, showing all his knowledge of the most elementary aspects of romance and communication
Naoto Hachioji: Yeah, I know. But I don't know if I'm capable of doing that. I'm afraid of being rejected, of hurting myself, of repenting…
Confessed Naoto, showing insecurity with himself
Noburo Hachioji: I know how it is. I've been there myself. But you know what I learned? That life is too short to be afraid to love. Sometimes it's worth the risk, even if you're disappointed. Because you never know when you will find someone who makes you happy, who completes you, who truly loves you.
Said Noburo, trying to open his brother's mind and it worked in a way
At the end of the night, they went to sleep. Naoto showed Noburo the guest room.
Naoto Hachioji: This is your room. You can feel free. It has towels, blankets, pillows, everything you need.
Said Naoto, opening the door and showing all the items that would be at Noburo's disposal
Noburo Hachioji: Thank you so much for everything you and our mother are doing for me, you know, having a healthy and happy family has always been a dream of mine, but I never thought I could have this in fact
Said Noburo, entering the room and sharing his happiness, he would now have a fuller and less stressful life
Naoto Hachioji: You're welcome, Noburo. I want you to feel at home.
Naoto said, smiling and making it clear that he would help his brother with whatever he needed
They wished each other goodnight and went to sleep
A few hours later
After arriving at five in the morning, Noburo had a nightmare and woke up in a cold sweat.
He went out for a walk in the streets to see if he calmed down.
He recalled his nightmare, which was a reminder of one of the most traumatic moments of his childhood. He remembered when he was five years old, and his father took him to a dark and dirty place and beat him violently when he saw that he had broken a plate
Noburo Hachioji: It wasn't intentional, dad, I swear
Kenji Hachioji: I don't care! You're a disgrace and you'll suffer for breaking that plate, you misbegotten brat
He remembered how he cried and screamed for his father, but he did not care
He remembered every slap and every punch he took and how he suffered at the hands of a cruel and unsympathetic father
He shook his head, trying to push away these horrible memories. He took a deep breath, trying to calm down. He looked around, trying to locate himself. Noburo saw that he was on a busy street, full of shops, cafes, and bakeries. He saw that the sun was rising, illuminating the sky with beautiful colors.
He felt a little better and decided to buy a loaf on a nearby corner, then he stopped at the bakery in question and it smelled delicious of hot bread and fresh coffee.
He approached the counter and ordered a piece of bread and butter and a latte. He paid the attendant and took his tray.
He looked for a place to sit and saw that there was an empty table near the window. He walked over and sat down.
He was about to give a bite of his bread when he saw a girl with red hair and brown eyes running towards him. She wore a school uniform and had a mischievous smile on her face. She seemed to be having fun with something.
She got close to him and was going to slap his neck but Noburo was quick and pinned her down
Maki Gamou: What are you doing, Naoto? Since when do you know how to fight?
Noburo was confused. He didn't know that girl, and she called him by his brother's name.
Noburo Hachioji: You mistook me for my brother, I'm not Naoto. I am Noburo, his twin brother.
The girl was surprised. She widened her eyes and said:
Maki Gamou: What? Does he have a twin brother? What do you mean? Since when?
Noburo sighed. He knew he would have to explain the whole story once again.
Noburo: That's a long story. Do you want to sit and listen?
The girl nodded. She was curious and wanted to know more about that mysterious boy.
Maki Gamou: Yes, I want to. My name is Maki Gamou, by the way. I'm a friend of Naoto's.
Noburo smiled. He found the girl nice and wanted to be friends with her too.
Noburo: Nice to meet you, Maki Gamou.
They greeted each other and sat down. Noburo began to tell his story, from the day he was kidnapped by his father, to the day he reunited with his brother. He told everything, without omitting anything.
Maki listened intently, without interrupting. She was shocked, moved, and outraged.
They had their breakfast together, just because the conversation was good. They introduced themselves and got to know each other better. They found that they had some things in common, such as a taste for manga, anime, and games.
Maki Gamou: Will you go to school later? I can help you settle in there if you would like
Noburo Hachioji: Sure, it would be nice to have some help around here
Both said goodbye and Noburo returned home without attracting attention and went back to bed where he could still rest for another two hours
Noburo Hachioji: well, now I'll rest for a while, and then I'll get ready for school
Chapter 4: Face 2 Face with Nagatoro for the first time
Chapter Text
Noburo Hachioji returned home with less weight on his back and fatigue on his shoulders.
The conversation with Maki seemed to have given some encouragement. He felt calmer, despite the few hours of sleep.
It was a pity that the shrill sound of the alarm broke the morning silence, and he got up and resigned to face the day with only two hours of rest.
The room was illuminated by the soft light of dawn. Noburo rubbed his eyes and stretched out.
The house was still quiet; his mother and brother, Naoto, were probably already in the kitchen. The comforting aroma of coffee and the soft sound of conversation created a cozy atmosphere. Noburo approached, a shy smile forming on his lips as he absorbed the familiar scene.
Naoto Hachioji: Did you sleep well? What was it like sleeping here for the first time?
Naoto asked, noticing Noburo's tired look. He seemed to have a pretty bad face.
Noburo Hachioji: enough to keep me alive. Well, it's a very comfortable place. There is nothing to complain about.
Noburo replied, trying to look more rested than he really was. His mother, Naomi, put a cup of coffee in front of him.
Naomi Hachioji: I hope this coffee could give you the extra energy that you need
She said it with a warm smile. The brothers had breakfast together, talking about trivia and plans for the day.
Naoto Hachioji: So what do you expect from the new school?
Noburo Hachioji: Well, I've been through so many that I don't even remember anymore. I just hope it's better now.
Naoto Hachioji: Did our father switch your school so much in the past?
Noburo Hachioji: Basically, yes! He would switch me from high school each time he went out with a different woman, and since he was a womanizer, you already know.
Naoto Hachioji: What a scoundrel!
Noburo Hachioji: Well, I just hope that no one from that side of the family will want trouble with me.
Both continued in this matter until the time to leave had come. Naomi accompanied them to the door.
Naomi Hachioji: You two take care of each other, okay?
Soon, it was time to go to school. Naoto guided Noburo through the familiar streets, pointing out shortcuts and points of interest.
Naoto Hachioji: That's the bakery where I usually hang out after school. We can study together for the tests here.
Noburo Hachioji: It seems like a quiet place to review materials.
Noburo had gone there the night before; it was there that he met a girl named Maki Gamou. On the way, they met Nagatoro, who approached with a mischievous smile.
Hayase Nagatoro: Good morning, Senpai!
She exclaimed, aiming at Naoto, but her attention was captured by Noburo's presence.
Nagatoro had never seen Noburo, so she took a shock; her eyes widened in surprise.
Hayase Nagatoro: Senpai? Why are there two of you here?
Nagatoro punched his arm to see if he was dreaming, and it hurt, so it wasn't a dream.
Noburo Hachioji: I assume you are my brother's friend. Nice to meet you! I'm Noburo Hachioji.
Hayase Nagatoro: You didn't tell me you had a brother, Naoto!
She said that, surprised
Naoto Hachioji: Hey! Even I didn't know I had one until recently!
Noburo Hachioji: When Naoto and I were babies, I was kidnapped from the maternity ward.
The story seemed like something out of a family drama, but there was Naoto, with a serious expression and his eyes fixed on Noburo.
Naoto Hachioji: It's true. Our father abandoned us when we were babies. He and our mother divorced before we were born, and he took him, my twin brother, with him. I grew up believing I was an only child until I recently discovered the truth.
Nagatoro processed the information. Her Senpai's father, a man she had never met, had stolen her childhood from the person she cared about most.
Hayase Nagatoro: What about your mother? Did she know that?
Naoto then said the following:
Noburo Hachioji: She knew, but she didn't have much to do. My father always changed his residence and used false names. It was very difficult to get to him.
Noburo felt a mixture of anger and compassion as he told this. His mother, a strong and dedicated woman, had carried this burden for so long and yet never gave up hope of seeing him again.
Hayase Nagatoro: Wow, I didn't know that.
Noburo Hachioji: All right, what matters is that the worst part is over.
After everything calmed down, Nagatoro then decided to test his pranks on him.
Hayase Nagatoro: Oh, now I understand! Let's see if you are as fun as Senpai here.
She said, a gleam of malice in her eyes, already thinking about what she was going to do.
Before Naoto could intervene, Nagatoro advanced on Noburo with a quick move, trying to surprise him with a judo strike.
But Noburo, with sharp reflexes, reversed the situation, swerving and using Nagatoro's own momentum to launch her into the nearby stream.
Nagatoro emerged from the creek, surprised and drenched but uninjured.
Hayase Nagatoro: Hey, that wasn't fair!
She protested reluctantly.
Noburo Hachioji: I just defended myself. There's not too much.
Naoto Hachioji: Nagatoro-san likes to play like that. She is very different from normal girls.
Noburo Hachioji: So you would let her give you a judo hit out of nowhere just because she wants?
Naoto Hachioji: Ah...
Noburo Hachioji: Well, it doesn't matter! Now help that girl get out of there before she catches a cold.
Naoto went to help pull Nagatoro out of the water, and she pulled him in.
Noburo Hachioji: Okay, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, whenever you want, I'll be waiting for you to get out of this lake.
And so, another day was just beginning.
Chapter 5: Noburo vs Naoto
Chapter Text
Noburo has always been a dedicated student, but upon entering his new school, he found himself with an unexpected challenge:
Surpassing the grades of his twin brother, Naoto, known for his exceptional intelligence and for his NERD ENERGY
The friendly competition between them reached its apex in the first test, where Noburo, with his tireless study, achieved an almost perfect score
Noburo: 9.95
Naoto: 10
Naoto Hachioji: It seems like you almost surpassed me this time, huh?
Noburo Hachiojo: Don't be so presumptuous, little brother.
Naoto Hachioji: Ah, you almost got there; it was close!
Noburo Hachioji: Almost there, is still not good enough. Of course, the grade is good and all, but you know I don't like to be in second place
The revelation of the notes caused a buzz among the students, who began to see Noburo in a different light.
He had that stereotype of being sloppier and less attentive to studies, but this view fell apart as soon as the grade in question came to light.
That was the subject for long minutes in the classes that followed the time of the test.
During the break, curiosity led Noburo to the art room, where he encountered Nagatoro, a student known for her playful and sometimes provocative personality, attacking Naoto.
Noburo observed the scene with an amused smile and, without missing the opportunity, called them "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," provoking laughter from those present.
Noburo Hachioji: Mr. and Mrs. Smith, What a beautiful couple you make. You deserve each other.
Hayase Nagatoro: Hey, don't mess around where you're not called! My business is with Naoto, not with his clone!
Noburo Hachioji: For a short girl like you, your tone of voice is damn loud.
Nagatoro, trying to fight back from earlier, advanced towards Noburo but was surprised by a skillfully executed judo strike.
Noburo, a black belt in the sport, revealed a talent that no one at the school knew he possessed.
Noburo Hachioji: I don't know what kind of interactions you have with my brother, but you will hardly be able to knock me down with a simple blow. I am a black belt.
The arrival of Maki Gamou, Yoshi, and Sakura to the art room brought a new dynamic to the group. They did not know Noburo, except for Maki, who had briefly talked to him the previous morning. As Sakura and Yoshi taunted Naoto, Maki approached Noburo, starting a conversation that quickly became an exchange of ideas and shared interests.
Maki Gamou: Well, well, what do we have here? Did you come to see your brother?
Noburo Hachioji: Actually, I came. Yes, now that I have the opportunity to have more contact with my family, why wouldn't I come?
Maki Gamou: (...He's so nice, but he doesn't seem naive to me...)
Noburo Hachioji: You seem kind of quiet. Are you okay, Maki?
Hayase Nagatoro: You like him, don't you?
Maki Gamou: Of course not! Why would I want to?
Hayase Nagatoro: Because it's stamped on your face, your gaze doesn't lie.
Maki Gamou: Said the girl who is attracted to Paisen.
Said Gamou, teasing back
Hayase and Maki exchanged taunts about who loved whom.
Noburo and Naoto only watched the scene before their eyes.
Noburo and Naoto remained in the art room after class, diving into a conversation about the girls and their distinct personalities.
Chapter 6: Brothers in Shape
Chapter Text
Noburu Hachioji: 8...9...10
Then, he dropped the weights on the floor after a 30-lifting repetition series.
Noburo Hachioji stood in front of the gym mirror, sweat dripping down his chiseled chest.
His muscles were like this due to the intense workout that he has been consistently doing for years.
Flashback
Memories of childhood bullying and the violence he witnessed at home fueled his determination.
Shinji Hachioji: Come back here, your little brat!
Sara Chivera: I will get the belt!
These two, the father and the stepmother of Noburo, chased him and spanked the 7-year-old boy.
Noburo Hachioji: Please! Stop!
But they didn't stop; they continued to do it for an entire hour.
After that, he vowed that no one would ever intimidate him again. The gym became his sanctuary—a place where he channeled his anger and frustration.
One day, these two tried to spank him again when he was 13, but he was able to counterattack, and he finally stood up against them.
Flashback Ending
But now, things were different. His estranged father was gone, and Noburo had a real family—his younger brother, Naoto, and their caring mother. For the first time, he felt a sense of belonging.
Noburo Hachioji: (...Damn you, old man! Look what you took away from me...)
Naoto Hachioji: Is there something wrong, bro?
Noburo Hachioji: No, I am fine! See? Everything is fine!
Naoto Hachioji: Okay, if you say so.
They looked at each other and performed a Hi-5.
Naoto Hachioji: I’ll be studying at the library; want to join me?
Noburo Hachioji: Not this time. I’m wiped out after today’s workout. Maybe tomorrow?
Naoto Hachioji: No problem. Rest up.
After some minutes
Naoto, the introspective brother, sat at the desk at the library, surrounded by dusty books. He was focusing on the science test, which will be realized in the next week.
He was reading about the most important topics and writing some notes to keep the knowledge fresh in his mind.
But there was something bothering him; it was the fact that his brother was everything that he wanted to be, and he isn't.
It's not hate; it's jealousy!
He was afraid that the people could consider him the "Inferior Hachioji," and he was afraid that he could lose Nagatoro for him.
So he came back home and went to the room to talk with his brother.
Naoto Hachioji: Bro?
Noburo Hachioji: What is it?
Naoto Hachioji: Can you teach me how to get these muscles?
Noburo Hachioji: What?
Naoto Hachioji: I want to work out too!
Noburo Hachioji: You know? I've always trained alone, and no one ever went to train with me, not because I liked it but because of my social traumas. I was always afraid of people being mean to me. That's why I decided to work out.
Naoto Hachioji: You too? Man, I've passed through complicated things too; I suffered bullying from other students, and I still suffer for that. So, can you help me?
Noburo Hachioji: It's an honor, you know? Help my brother to overcome his problems!
Naoto Hachioji: Seriously?
Noburo Hachioji: Yeah! Why wouldn't I help you? We are family!
Naoto Hachioji: Thanks...bro
Naoto started to cry.
Noburo Hachioji: What's the matter, bro? Why are you crying?
Naoto Hachioji: I'm sorry for being jealous. I'm sorry for being a crybaby!
Noburo Hachioji: Hey, man, calm down. You don't need to apologize, and if there is someone who could be jealous here, this one is me.
Naoto Hachioji: Being jealous for what?
Noburo Hachioji: Well, you have a mother who loves you, you have a girlfriend who loves you, you had a normal childhood, and you didn't need to see your parents killing themselves, literally... Man, you can get these in shape in a few months, but it took me 16 years to finally have a family.
Naoto Hachioji: Sorry... I didn't knew that you... wait... NAGATORO ISNT MY GIRLFRIEND
Noburo Hachioji: Wait, you guys are not dating?
Naoto took a deep breath, his heart racing.
Naoto Hachioji: Nagatoro isn’t my girlfriend. But I wish she were.
Noburo raised an eyebrow.
Noburo Hachioji: Really? I thought you guys really were a thing!
Naoto Hachioji: Well, she is always teasing me with those mind games, but her company is something that I wouldn't trade.
Noburo Hachioji: So, you didn't confess your feelings?
Naoto Hachioji: No, not yet.
Noburo Hachioji: Don't worry, man, your brother will help you! To get the shape that you want and the confidence that you need to declare your feelings for that girl!
Naoto Hachioji: You’re right. I’ll work on both—my body and my courage.
And it was there when Naoto's life was going to change forever—for a better way, of course.
Chapter 7: Red Pepper Face
Chapter Text
Noburo Hachioji woke up after a long day earlier; he was always the first one to wake up, while Naoto was more sleepy.
He went to the kitchen to get something to eat and saw his mother there. She came towards him.
Naomi Hachioji: Good morning, son. Did you sleep well?
Noburo Hachioji: Yes, mom, to tell you the truth, I've never slept so well since I got here; this is the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in my life.
Naomi Hachioji: I apologize for not having located you before; your father did everything to keep you apart from me, and I see the way he mistreated you. I am sorry for not being there for you, my dear son.
Noburo hugged his mother tightly and said,
Noburo Hachioji: It wasn't your fault; unfortunately, my father was an asshole. I don't blame you for anything I suffered, and I don't blame Naoto for having the life I always wanted to have. I understand that you feel bad for what I went through, but I repeat, it wasn't your fault.
Naomi cried and hugged her son. She wanted to have done it since he was a baby, but he was taken away from her.
Naomi Hachioji: I can't erase the past, but I can help you build your future, son. Know that I will always be with you.
Noburo Hachioji: Right! Thank you, mom!
The two had coffee and talked a little about current topics and other more sporadic matters, however, time did not stop, and Naomi had to go to work.
Naomi Hachioji: Son, I'm going out now. Take good care of yourself and Naoto, okay?
Noburo Hachioji: Alright, just leave it to me!
Noburo nodded, watching his mother walk out the door. He went to the kitchen, took his cup of coffee and took the last sip.
Then he went to take a shower and to his uniform.
He was ready for another day of school, but, there was still 2 hours before the classes, it was free time
Naoto was still asleep, and this had a clear reason.
Noburo Hachioji: (...Has he been doing gross things again? That must be why is always tired; maybe he needs another way to release dopamine, maybe a walk or a gym session...)
Noburo then was on the PC watching videos and reviewing material that he had not understood; it was a habit for him to do this since he was a child, since low grades had physical punishment as a consequence while in the custody of his father and stepmother, both already deceased in the incident last month.
But the dorbell rang.
Noburo was curious; usually no one comes at this time of the morning; it was 7:00 AM.
Noburo approached the door, curious as to who might be on the other side.
Noburo Hachioji: Who gonna be knocking on my door?
When he opened it, he came across Hayase Nagatoro, a close friend of Naoto's.
Noburo Hachioji: Hello, Nagatoro! I see you came to visit us.
He greeted Noburo, being polite, and Nagatoro responded with politeness too, both of them had already resolved themselves from the incident last week where, when trying to mess with Noburo the same way she does with Naoto, she took a Jiu Jitsu blow that made her fall into a lake near where they were, despite she had no injuries, the clothes got soaked and there was tension at other times they saw each other, but as two adults, they sat and talked to resolve this and in fact this was done, it was agreed that there could be jokes between them, but without physical contact
Hayase Nagatoro: Good morning, Hachi! I came here to see how you guys were. By the way, how's Senpai?
Notes: In Japan, people tend to call acquaintances by the surname, only using the first name for family or close friends
Noburo Hachioji: Oh, Naoto is still asleep. If you want to come in for coffee, you can come in.
Hayase Nagatoro: Thank You
They both walked in, and Nagatoro wondered
Hayase Nagatoro: Always so sleepy, this Senpai. What's he doing?
Noburo Hachioji: Gross things that a teenager would normally do. I always call him to make some exercises and walk with me, but he always prefers to stay at home.
Hayase Nagatoro: That Senpai, always gross
Noburo Hachioji: Indeed, anyway, there is some coffee in the coffee machine; I just made it some minutes ago, and there is cheese if you want to make a sandwich.
Hayase Nagatoro: I ate before I came here, but I accept the coffee.
They had coffee and talked about normal things, and as time went on, Naoto wouldn't wake up. That's when Noburo had an idea.
Noburo Hachioji: Nagatoro, can I ask you a favor?
Hayase Nagatoro: What's about? Say
Noburo Hachioji: I need you to wake up my brother. I've been calling him for hours, and he doesn't get out of bed. Can you help me?
Hayase smiled, seeing an opportunity to poke fun at the poor guy.
Hayase Nagatoro: Of course, by the way, where is your room?
Noburo Hachioji: second door in the upstairs hallway
Hayase was careful not to spoil her plan and managed to sneak into Hachioji's room. She soon spotted Naoto sleeping.
She then, in an act of boldness, sneaked through the blanket that Naoto wore and came right to his side. Her heart beat harder and harder, but her naughty side was the strongest, and so this suppressed passion did not make her stop.
She patted Naoto's face until he woke up, and when he did wake up, he found himself face-to-face with her.
Hayase Nagatoro: Good morning, dear
Nagatoro said it with a mischievous smile.
Naoto turned as red as a bell pepper. Surprise and shame hit him hard. He didn't expect to wake up with Nagatoro so close, and his words left him with no reaction.
Nagatoro burst out laughing along with Noburo, who found it hilarious.
Naoto, Noburo, and Nagatoro all went to high school together.
Naoto Hachioji: (...These two, they will gonna pay; it will not stay like this..!)
Thought to Naoto on their way to school
Noburo Hachioji: Who told you to stay up late doing those things, huh, little brother?
Naoto Hachioji: Hey! I didn't do anything!
Hayase Nagatoro: That's why he is always tired , he spends all his energy doing these gross things.
And off they went for another day at school.
Chapter 8: Naoto strikes back
Chapter Text
It was a sunny Sunday, 8 a.m.
Naoto was tired of being the target of the Nagatoro's jokes and decided it was time to give the cards too. He went to his brother, Noburo, in search of advice on how to prank Nagatoro, his art club colleague.
Naoto Hachioji: Hey bro!
Noburo turned and said
Noburo Hachioji: What can I do for you, bro?
Naoto Hachioji: I need your help. I want to strike back from the things Nagatoro does to me.
His brother, Noburo, suggested making a scheme at the art club door where a bowl of water would be suspended, and as soon as Nagatoro enter, the bowl would fall on her, leaving her wet.
Naoto hesitated, worried about the consequences.
Naoto Hachioji: This is a bit extreme; I think I want something less drastic but still effective.
Noburo Hachioji: Like what?
It was then that Noburo had an idea:
Noburo Hachioji: What if we put a airhorn connected to the art room door? As soon as Nagatoro entered, she would be so scared that even her soul will be hit
Naoto Hachioji: Look, it's not a bad idea, how about we buy the items for it? Since we will hardly have a airhorn at home,
Noburo Hachioji: I know of a place that sells these things; if you want to go there now, I'm free.
Naoto Hachioji: I am without anything to do too; it would be an honor to have you as a pranking partner.
Noburo Hachioji: Now, Naoto! You're no longer so passive! Good job!
They went to a grocery store for the party; it was only about two kilometers from their house; that is, it's a 20-minute walk there.
When they arrived, they looked for items for the stick and finally bought
- 1 Airhorn
- 1 String Roll
- 1 Isolating Tape Roll
They paid for the products; it wasn't very expensive
Naoto and Noburo came out of the grocery store for parties, the bell over the door ringing behind them.
The midday sun enveloped them, warming their backs as they walked along the sidewalk.
Noburo Hachioji: That was a good idea, Naoto. Now we have everything we need to catch Nagatoro by surprise.
Noburo said, adjusting the handle on the bag.
Naoto agreed, holding the insulating tape roll firmly.
Naoto Hachioji: I hope she doesn't get angry.
Noburo Hachioji: Ah, she's going to get very angry.
Naoto Hachioji: Ah, noooo
Said Naoto, already being a little nervous.
Noburo Hachioji: Courage, Naoto! She won't bite you!
With the bags in their hands, they left the store, ready to turn the art hall into a cross-country field. The sun was shining, and Naoto felt more confident than ever.
Everything would be ready for Monday; the revenge would finally be happening. Not that he hated Nagatoro, but he also wanted to play a little
It would be a harmless scare, but enough to catch Nagatoro by surprise.
In the next day
In the art club room, Naoto and Noburo carefully unwrapped the purchased items.
The airhorn was placed on top of the running door that the arts room had; it was suspended with the insulating tape, and it connected with the door by means of the string that was stuck to the door and the door knocker, all was almost ready
After that, he went to class, and they had a normal day. As soon as they were done, people went to their respective clubs to do their extracurricular activities.
The brothers returned to the art room to test and adjust the final details, but Maki, a colleague from the art club, entered the room. Her eyes were blurred when she saw the scene.
Maki Gamou: What are you doing?
She asked, curious to see the set of wires and a hose hanging under her head.
Noburo smiled and explained everything to her.
Noburo Hachioji: We will prank Nagatoro. We want to scare her
Maki laughed, seeing an opportunity to do something comic.
Maki Gamou: Wow! Can I help you?
Naoto hesitated, but then agreed.
Naoto Hachioji: Of course, it would be great to have you as an accomplice.
Maki took her cell phone and had already opened the camera app.
Maki Gamou: I'll record everything. This scene is going to be epic!
It took an hour to fix everything, and now everything was in its right place.
Nagatoro was coming for another day of class. She came and did her usual routine and went to the arts club.
Hayase Nagatoro: Hum, how will Senpai be today? There's only one way to find out; I'm going to cut him up a little bit.
She came all smiling and expecting to do the jokes that she used to do with Naoto, but as soon as she entered, a loud noise of a whistle sounded, making her jump out of fear and fall back.
Naoto and Noburo celebrated with a discreet Hi-5, and Maki recorded everything from her entrance to the horror she took
The plan had worked! Nagatoro looked at them, confused and frightened, but it didn't take long for her face to turn into a smiling smile.
Hayase Nagatoro: It looks like somebody learned how to make pranks. You know, if it were anyone else, I would have sworn revenge, but since it's you, I'll give you a prize.
Nagatoro kissed Naoto's cheek, causing him to turn red and faint.
Hayase Nagatoro: You may have scared me with the buzz, but you still have a lot to learn to be at the same level as me.
Hayase took the brush and made a facial painting in Naoto as a counterattack.
Noburo Hachioji: Should we intervene?
Noburo said, looking at Maki.
Maki Gamou: No, let them have fun.
Chapter 9: Ah, girl look at that body!
Chapter Text
Maki was feeling depressed with her body. After undergoing surgery, she ended up gaining 9 kg during the recovery period. She cannot do any type of heavy exercise or effort; this is the reason for this increase in weight.
She did not like her body in that state, so she waited anxiously to be able to return to normal, and when her doctor released the practice of exercises, she already enrolled in a gym and began the next day to do the sessions.
The desire to leave that state made her have this impulse, good that at least the gym in question was near her home, so this would prevent there from being a loss of more time with locomotion.
On the first day, Maki put on an outfit that made her feel good and went to the gym; it was blue leggings and a top of the same color. She looked in the mirror, and despite the extra pounds, she liked what she saw.
Maki Gamou: You look beautiful today, huh?
Maki complimented her own reflection; she was quite the vain type.
When she arrived, a professor came and told her to be careful because she was starting and had no physical preparation to run fast or lift a lot of weight with any muscle whatsoever. He said that the ideal would be for her to take it easy and not force too much. However, stubborn as ever, she had other plans
Maki Gamou: (...I know I can run on this treadmill; it shouldn't be that hard...)
Maki started with little speed, and seeing the ease with which her movements flowed, she increased the pace and elevation of the treadmill; however, her body did not keep up with this and Maki began to feel difficulty in maintaining the required pace. She even tried to compensate with excess will, but even that did not work, and with that she ended up being thrown back, and she even closed her eyes, already imagining the pain she would feel.
Luckily, Noburo was back there, finishing his bench press session. Seeing a girl being thrown from the treadmill, he acted quickly and held her before she fell to the ground. Maki, who was tough and had a rough manner, looked at him with admiring eyes but quickly changed her countenance to maintain her posture.
Maki Gamou: Can you put me down, please?
Maki asked, trying to hide the embarrassment she felt, without much success since her face was very red.
Note: They already knew each other from school, and today was Saturday. Maki did not know that he did gym, and vice versa.
Noburo gently placed her on the floor and smiled.
Noburo Hachioji: Are you okay?
He asked, worried about Maki's health.
Maki Gamou: Yes, I am. Thanks
Maki replied, trying to seem indifferent even though she knew her heart was beating harder.
She thanked Noburo and returned to the treadmill. Noburo went to do a session on her side.
Maki Gamou: Do you want to exercise next to me?
Said Maki awkwardly, trying to show a hard way but failing miserably.
Noburo Hachioji: It's just that I like exercising more with my friends around; you know, it's more pleasurable to exercise with someone to talk to. I don't know if you think the same way.
Noburo began to help her with the right way to use the weight machines, showing patience and care.
Noburo Hachioji: Here, let me show you how to adjust this appliance for you. Thus, you do not overexert the muscles.
Maki, trying to hide her embarrassment, followed Noburo's instructions. She realized that she was beginning to enjoy his company.
Maki began to do push-ups but soon realized that her form was not correct. Noburo, watching closely, approached to correct.
Noburo Hachioji: Maki, you need to keep your back straight and your arms in line with your shoulders. Let me show you.
He kneeled down next to her and gently adjusted his posture. Maki felt a slight shiver at his touch but tried to focus on the exercise.
Maki Gamou: Thank you, Noburo.
Noburo Hachioji: Of course, it's just a matter of practice. You're doing great.
After a few sets of exercises, they both decided it was time to end the session. They walked out of the gym together, chatting excitedly.
Maki Gamou: You know, I never thought I would enjoy working out with someone so much. Usually, I prefer to do things myself.
Noburo Hachioji: I understand. But it's always nice to have someone to support and motivate you. Plus, it's more fun.
Maki smiled, feeling lighter and happier than she had in a long time.
Maki Gamou: You're right. Thank you for today, Noburo.
Noburo Hachioji: You're welcome, Maki. Are we going to do it again any of these days?
Maki Gamou: Absolutely. So long, Noburo.
They said goodbye and went their way to their houses, Maki and Noburo will surely remember this day
Chapter 10: What a misunderstanding!
Chapter Text
The biology teacher had passed a work about marine animals.
Naoto formed a duo with Chihiro Himioka, the only brown student at the school, the result of a marriage between a Brazilian and a Japanese woman.
They were good friends and decided to meet at Chihiro's house at night to work on the project.
Naoto returned home to find Maki and Noburo watching YouTube videos on the TV in the living room.
Curious, he asked Noburo why Maki was there.
Noburo Hachioji: I invited her to come here, brother!
Noburo replied casually.
Naoto found it strange. For him, it was not so simple to call a girl to his house, but Noburo did not seem to mind such formalities.
Naoto, always meticulous and preoccupied with appearances, could not understand how his brother managed to be so carefree.
He sat in the armchair near them, trying to focus on the video, but his mind was racing.
Maki, on the other hand, seemed completely at ease. She laughed at the jokes in the videos and occasionally commented on something with Noburo, who responded with a smile.
Naoto watched the interaction between the two, feeling a twinge of envy. He wished to have the same ease as Noburo in relating to people.
Over time, the afternoon turned into night. The lights in the room were low, creating a cozy atmosphere.
Maki, who was sitting near Noburo, began to feel the tiredness of the day. She leaned back on the couch and, without realizing it, eventually fell asleep. Noburo, who was next to him, also began to feel the weight of his eyelids, and before long, he was fast asleep.
Naoto, who was still awake, looked at the two of them and smiled. He took out his cell phone and, mischievous as always, took a photo of the two clinging to each other on the couch. He knew Noburo would be embarrassed when he saw the photo, but he couldn't resist the temptation.
After a while, Maki woke up and realized that she was being held by Noburo. She looked around, trying to situate herself, and saw Naoto sitting in the armchair next to her with a mischievous smile on her face. She tried to get up without waking Noburo, but he stirred and muttered something inaudible.
Maki decided to sneak out, but before going, she gave him a kiss on the cheek and left. Naoto watched the scene, surprised by Maki's boldness. He had never seen Noburo so close to a girl before. When Maki left, Naoto got up and went to Noburo, who was still asleep.
Naoto Hachioji: Hey, wake up.
Said Naoto, shaking his brother
Noburo opened his eyes slowly and looked around, confused.
Noburo Hachioji: What happened? Where's Maki?
He asked, still a little groggy.
Naoto Hachioji: She got away
Naoto replied, trying to hide her smile.
After he said that, Naoto showed the photo on his cell phone. Noburo sighed, but he couldn't help but smile.
Naoto left to go to Chihiro's house, unaware that Nagatoro was watching him from afar. She wanted to prank him, but when she saw him with another girl, she felt sorry and decided to see what was going on.
Nagatoro approached and saw a scene that cut his heart: the shadows of Naoto and Chihiro seemed to be kissing.
She ran out, crying, and went home. Misaki Nagatoro, his sister, noticed and asked
Misaki Nagatoro: Hayase, why are you crying?
Hayase Nagatoro: I saw Senpai with another girl... They were kissing.
Hayase replied, sobbing.
Misaki was extremely sorry, and she hugged her sister, trying to comfort her.
Misaki Nagatoro: It's okay, Hayase. Maybe it was a misunderstanding.
Taiga Nagatoro, the older brother, overheard the conversation and, being reckless, decided to take revenge on Naoto for making his sister cry.
At Chihiro's house, she and Naoto were focused on work. They laughed and talked about the different types of marine animals.
Naoto Hachioji: Did you know that dolphins are considered one of the most intelligent animals in the world?
Chihiro asked, trying to raise a subject.
Naoto Hachioji: Yes, and they have amazing communication!
Naoto replied, excited by the interactions.
After all, Naoto left Chihiro's house and took the path back to his home.
Meanwhile, Taiga was on his way to the young boy's house, determined to confront Naoto. He saw him on the street and went to confront him.
Naoto Hachioji: Taiga? What are you doing here?
He asked, not knowing what Nagagoro's brother was doing there.
Naoto Hachioji: What's going on, Taiga!?
Taiga Nagatoro: You made my sister cry! You brat!
Shouted Taiga, advancing on Naoto.
Naoto Hachioji: I didn't do anything! What are you talking about?
Taiga Nagatoro: Hayase saw you kissing another girl!
Accused Taiga, showing anger in his gaze and in his words.
Naoto Hachioji: I didn't kiss her!
Taiga Nagatoro: Liar! You're lying! Or are you calling my sister a liar? Maybe I should discipline you and teach you a little respect.
Taiga was preparing a blow to Naoto's face, not even worrying if he would suffer from the fragments of the glasses in his eyes, but a hand held Taiga's, and do you know whose it was?
HAYASE NAGATORO!
Hayase Nagatoro: Stop, bro!
Taiga saw his sister and did not understand her reaction. He let go of her, but Naoto Hachioji took advantage and ran away from that fight.
Taiga and Hayase were arguing, and Misaki appeared to calm tempers.
Will this misunderstanding be resolved?
Chapter 11: A way to solve a big problem
Chapter Text
Naoto, still panting, hides at the bus stop, trying to process everything that happened. He looks around, hoping Nagatoro won't find him, but soon hears quick footsteps approaching. Nagatoro, determined to get answers, follows him and confronts him, with tears in her eyes and a trembling voice.
Hayase Nagatoro: Why did you kiss Chihiro?
Naoto, surprised and confused, responds
Naoto Hachioji: I never did that! I didn't even touch her.
Nagatoro, with tears in her eyes, insists
Hayase Nagatoro: But I saw! I saw you kissing through the window.
Naoto, trying to stay calm, explains
Naoto Hachioji: It was a misunderstanding. I was helping Chihiro set up a banner for our project. The shadows may have seemed close, but there was no kiss at all. Moreover, Chihiro wears purple lipstick. If I had kissed her, there would be some trace of it on my face, don't you think?
Nagatoro, still suspicious, looks closely at Naoto, searching for any sign of lipstick. Not finding anything, she begins to doubt what she saw. Was she wrong all along?
The tension between them is palpable, but the truth begins to emerge. Nagatoro, still with her heart racing, approaches Naoto, trying to better understand the situation.
Hayase Nagatoro: So, you were just helping her with the banner?
Naoto Hachioji: Yes, exactly. I would never do something like that to Chihiro. You know that I like you, Nagatoro.
Nagatoro, surprised by Naoto's confession, feels her heart race. She looks at him, trying to find any lie in his eyes, but all she sees is sincerity.
Hayase Nagatoro: Do you... like me?
Naoto, blushing, replies
Naoto Hachioji: Yes, I like you. And that's why I would never do anything to hurt you.
Nagatoro, feeling a mix of relief and shame, lowers her head. She realizes that she might have been hasty in her conclusions.
Hayase Nagatoro: Sorry, Naoto. I was just afraid of losing you.
Naoto, feeling the weight of Nagatoro's words, approaches and holds her hands. He looks into her eyes, trying to convey the full sincerity of his feelings.
Naoto Hachioji: You will never lose me, Nagatoro. I promise.
Nagatoro, feeling the tears streaming down her face, smiles shyly. She approaches Naoto and hugs him, feeling the warmth and safety of his arms.
Nagatoro: Thank you, Naoto. I... I like you too.
The two of them stand there, embraced, feeling the weight of the misunderstanding dissipate. The night around them seems calmer, and the distant sound of cars on the street creates a soft soundtrack for the moment.
Naoto Hachioji: Shall we go home?
Hayase Nagatoro: Yes, let's go.
They stand up and walk together towards Naoto's house, feeling that, despite the challenges, they are closer than ever.
The silence between them is comfortable—a necessary pause after the intensity of the confrontation. The city lights shine around them, creating an almost magical setting for the moment they share.
Naoto Hachioji: Nagatoro, I really apologize for all this confusion. I never wanted to hurt you.
Nagatoro shakes Naoto's hand, feeling the sincerity in his words.
Hayase Nagatoro: I know, Naoto. I'm also very sorry for doubting you. I think I let my feelings take over.
They keep walking, passing by closed shops and quiet streets. The sound of their footsteps echoes softly, creating a rhythmic melody that accompanies them.
Naoto Hachioji: You know, Nagatoro, I have always admired your courage and determination. You have always been so strong and confident.
Nagatoro smiles, a shy smile that reveals a more vulnerable side of her.
Hayase Nagatoro: Thanks Nao!
They stop in front of a small square, where a wooden bench invites them to sit. They settle in, still holding hands, and look up at the starry sky.
Naoto Hachioji: Look at those stars, Nagatoro. They are so beautiful, aren't they?
Nagatoro nods, her eyes shining with the light of the stars.
Hayase Nagatoro: Yes, they are.
Nagatoro leans forward and gives a gentle kiss on Naoto's cheek, a gesture of affection and gratitude.
Hayase Nagatoro: Thank you, Naoto. I will always be here for you, too.
They remain seated on the bench, enjoying each other's company and the tranquility of the night. Time seems to stand still, allowing them to connect in a deeper and more meaningful way.
