Work Text:

There are tales of a mysterious world in another dimension, that the only very brave (or very stupid) would ever attempt to go to. Legends say it is home of witches and demons living on a body of a dead God where the people there can do incredible magic! Illusions that can create a copy of the user at will, magic that can heal wounds in seconds, or the power to conjure flames from thin air!

But alas, in the end of the day it is only a legend. A myth. A tale of fiction made from an imaginative person. Or so they thought.

"I, Luz Noceda, the first human in the Boiling Isles, will prove that not only I've discovered something amazing but also will become the first human witch!" Luz proudly proclaimed, placing her foot on top of a table in an attempt of a dramatic pose.

"If being the first human witch is to be this loud in the morning you can count me out," groaned Eda. King let out a quiet 'weh' before going back to sleep.

Luz blushed in embarrassment and stepped down. "Sorry," she muttered. She skipped towards Eda, visible excitement pouring out of her. "So! What should we do today? Meditate on places of high magic? Carve runes? Go towards the deepest darkest depths of the unknown to discover the hidden secret magic hidden beneath the Boiling Isles?!"

"Nope. Nope. Aaaaand nope. Besides, even if there was one, I would've found it years ago," Eda chuckled. "Where we're going is much much exciting." She grinned a coy smile, flashing her golden fang at Luz.

Luz gasped excitedly, eyes sparkling with glee. "I am so excited about this."

"Wake up King!" Eda smacked her staff on top of King's head.

"WEH?!" King whelped in alarm. "Hey! What gives?" he glared at her, rubbing his sore head.

"We're going out and before you can say no, you still owe me for stealing my elixir."

King groaned but reluctantly obeyed, muttering curses no one can hear.

"Now who wants to put some blindfolds and get on my staff?" Eda pulled out a couple of blindfolds.

Luz immediately jumped in. "Oh me! Me!" then she paused as the realization kicks in. "Wait, what?"

Flying blindfolded was one of freakiest yet exciting experience Luz had so far and she's loving every single second of it! Granted, she was riding at the back but the feeling was still the same. "This is amazi- GAHK!" A fly flew into her mouth. She went through a coughing fit until the fly finally flew out of her mouth.

"Hahahaha!" Eda laughed, wiping a few tears from her eyes. "Keep your mouth closed kid." she advised.

The trio flew for a while until Eda suddenly called out to them. "Hold in tight! We're landing this thing." Luz didn't even have a second to react as she suddenly felt her weight shift backwards as Eda dived her staff towards a clearing. She swore she would've fallen if it wasn't for her reflex grabbing Eda at the last second.

"Aaaaand here we are. Welcome to the shoulder! You can take off the blind fold now."

Luz took out her blindfold and immediately marveled her surroundings. "Dark forests? Eerie sounds? Mysterious creatures lurking in the dark?" she squealed in delight. "This is just like Azura's adventure in book two where she ventured into the forests of no name to seek for the hidden mage!"

Eda bonked her with her staff, "Can it fan girl. We're not here to go sightseeing." She rummaged through her satchel and pulled out a long list. "Alright, we need twelve samples of blackroot, two samples of screaming root, a hallucinating mushroom, and lastly five jars of pixie goo." She listed the items off with her fingers.

"What's a pixie goo?"

Eda simply pointed at a nearby floating pixie and a few moments later it excreted a rainbow-colored 'goo' complete with glitters and sparkles. Luz stared at the whole ordeal with a blank expression. "I shouldn't have asked!"

Eda snorted, "Ah don't worry kid. At least it doesn't smell." She scooped up the pixie 'goo' with one of the jars in one scoop. "Now get a move on. These ingredients won't collect themselves you know."

"Come on Luz! I'll show you where Eda gets these ingredients." King scrambled himself on top of her head. "Forward my valued steed!" King ordered, pointing forward. Luz chuckled at his antics but followed his command.

"Okay, Eda said she would be handling the blackroot, so let's go for the... Hallucinating mushroom?" Luz raised an eyebrow at King.

"Ooh! Ooh! I remember this one! It should be right about... There!" King pointed towards a variety of mushrooms of different colors, ripe for the taking.

Luz grabbed the nearest mushroom only to be stopped by King. "Those aren't hallucinating mushrooms," he shook his head.

"Oh! Sorry," she tried another one of a different color. She picked one which was orange with white spots.

"Nope."

Blue with white spots?

"Nuh uh."

Okay, definitely pink.

"No."

Maybe... Blue with white spots?

"Ugh! It's not that hard to look for hallucinating mushrooms Luz."

Luz glared at him in annoyance, "Well, how should i know? What do you want me to do? Try one and see if it works?"

King stared at her with indifference, "As much as i want to see you begging for mercy, I know Eda would kill me if I let that happen." He dropped down from the rock where he was sitting and walked towards her. "Hallucinating mushrooms Luz. Hallucinating. Mushrooms. It shouldn't be hard to understand that."

"And like i said how should I... know?" she trailed off as not too far from them was a sentient mushroom with two legs. What made this mushroom stand-out from the rest was the fact it was glowing and its eyes were all swirly-like. Oh and the fact that it walks.

"Wooooooah. Groovy." It said in an out-of-this world tone.

"Seeeeee? Hallucinating mushrooms! They're not that hard to find." King teased her.

She ignored his teasing, focusing more on the sentient mushroom before her. "Hey... It kinda looks cute." she flipped it around to get a good look of it.

"LUZ WAIT NO! DON'T STARE INTO HIS EYE-"

The warning came a little too late as Luz was suddenly poured into a trance-like state, her mind and body become one as the secrets of the universe unveiled itself before her, dragging her into a series of kaleidoscope worlds and as fast as it went, she was back into her body. Feeling more empty than usual.

"You okay?" King asked in worry.

She let out a tiny sob in reply.

It took a while but thankfully the effects of the hallucinating mushroom wasn't permanent. Although the trauma is. She shuddered involuntarily. She grabbed the list again and took note of the next item.

Pixie goo.

Eda's demonstration flashed into her mind and she shut her eyes in disgust. She did not look forward to this. Thankfully, gathering pixie goo was easy, albeit disgusting. There were instances where pixies tried to eat her skin but it was nothing she couldn't handle.

"Hallucinating shrooms? Check. Blackroot? Eda's got that covered. Pixie goo?" Luz looked over her list to see five jars of pixie goo lined up neatly. She nodded in approval. "Check. Well, all that's left now is two screaming roots. Come on King." The latter didn't waste any time as he scrambled himself on top of Luz's hoodie. "I wonder how's Eda doing... I hope she's okay."

With Eda

"Get back! Get back you savage beast!" She batted her staff on a nearby monster while casting a spell on another one. There was atleast dozens of these creatures surrounding her from all sides, eager to tear her apart. She formed another spell circle, letting the fireball launch towards a large group. She watched with satisfaction as the monsters flew, those who survived retreated to fight another day.

"You won't take me alive!"

(Friendly PSA: Blackroots are extremely potent potion ingredients which stabilizes the mixture of any potion while amplifying its effects. However, one must be careful when collecting more than two as its scent can drive most predators mad with unnatural bloodlust.)

Back with Luz and King

"I'm sure she's fine. She's probably drinking apple blood by now waiting for us." King said.

Luz giggled in reply. "That sounds like Eda alright."

The two of them continued their trek towards the location of the last ingredient they need. Yet, little did they know, their every movement was being watched. High on the cliffs stood a lone figure crouching low as it observed them through a tinted glass visor. Several 'click', 'click', 'click' was heard followed by a small mechanical 'beep'. The figure stood up and left the area, it punched a few buttons on a device mounted on its wrist and with a last push of a button its figure shimmered and distorted before it ultimately vanished from the naked eye.

"AHHHHHHHHHHH!" A loud shrill screaming pierced the forest woods.

"Make it stop! Make it stop!" King whined as he trashed around, covering his ears.

"How do you make it stop!?" Luz exclaimed as she covered one of her ears with her hands while the other was holding onto a screaming root. When Luz pulled out the root, she didn't expect it to have face of eternal sadness, what she did expect though was the loud screaming its emitting.

Now she just wants it to stop before it blows her mind!

"I don't know! Just do something! ANYTHING!" King managed to voice out amongst all the screaming.

Luz did the one thing she only knew. She bashed the screaming root at the nearest tree multiple times until it stopped. The root twitched and groaned but ultimately quieted down. "Whew! That's one trauma I won't ever forget."

King rubbed his sensitive ears. "Who cares about trauma! I'm just glad that thing finally shut up."

"Yeaaaah… Eda might have forgotten to mention how to extract screaming roots." She sat down, wiping some sweat off.

"Remind me to switch her apple blood when we get back. That'll show her not to forget important things. Like me!"

"I don't think that's a good idea King."

"You're not a good idea! Woah!" He pointed an accusing finger at her before losing balance, letting out a cute 'weh' as he fell. Thankfully, it was a short fall.

Luz giggled at his antics but stopped when her ears perked up at the sounds of mechanical whirring. She stopped at what she was doing, grabbing King's attention. "What's wrong Luz?" he asked, noticing her weird (weirder than normal) behavior.

Luz held a finger to her lips. "Shhh... Can you hear that? It sounded like it was coming from over there." she pointed towards some trees.

"Luz, when you hear something spooky in a dark forest, the last thing you should do is to go towards it."

Luz ignored him as she slowly made her way towards the sound, her curiosity getting the best of her. King sighed in frustration before packing up her satchel and followed her, not wanting to be left behind. The two of them peeked around the corner and saw the subject of their curiosity. A few meters before them was a mechanical drone. It's many moving parts spinning and grinding together. Its large lens widening and narrowing as it inspected the area before it. However, something about this thing screamed 'alien' to her and most importantly...

What's it doing here?

"Oooooh... What is that thing?" King asked in wonder.

"I'm not sure but it looks like a drone."

"Pfft." King scoffed. "That ain't no bee Luz."

Luz shook her head. "No, no. Not that kind of drone. I mean ones from earth, it's a robot you can control with a remote."

King stared at her weirdly. "You humans are weird." he turned his gaze back at the hovering mechanical device. "I wonder if i could touch it." He made a move towards it.

"No King wait!" she tried to pull him back.

Her voice alerted the drone and it snapped its attention towards them in a blink of an eye. Its lifeless gaze switched between her and King and she could've sworn she heard a few 'clicks' coming from it. Before she could react, the machine released large amounts of smoke. Luz and King coughed as the smoke entered their lungs, not wanting to stay any more than they have to, Luz grabbed King and escaped the area.

"King! King are you okay?" Luz asked in worry.

King coughed out a puff of smoke. "Yeah." He managed to wheeze out. "I'm alright Luz."

Luz looked back towards the smoke cloud where she last saw the drone, planning to give it a piece of her mind but when the smoke cleared, it was gone. "Wha-?"

"Luz? Luz! King!" Eda yelled out in alarm.

"Over here Eda!"

Eda ran towards the duo and checked for any injuries. "What happened? I saw the smoke and thought something attacked you."

"We're fine, we're fine. Whatever it was, it didn't attack us."

"What was it?" Eda asked, one brow raising.

"It was a drone... I think."

Eda paused, turning to look at her. "A drone? What's a drone?" she raised an eyebrow.

"It's a-"

"Floating metal eyeball!" King interrupted.

Eda hummed in thought. "This area is dangerously close to the Emperor's coven. They must've been testing something new, and if they saw you then we have all the more reason to get out of here."

"But Eda wait! We still need one more screaming root."

Eda waved her off. "Don't worry about it kid. We can always find more elsewhere."

"Uhhh… Like that one over there?"

The mentor and student followed the finger King was pointing at and sure enough, a screaming root laid there untouched.

"Wha-?"

"I got it!" Eda grabbed the root and stuffed it in her pack. "Good work Luz. Let's get outta here." she twirled her staff on her hands before setting it down.

Luz looked back to where she last saw the drone and the screaming root. It was just all too convenient. Her suspicions only grew the more she thought about it. Was it following her? And how did a drone ended up here? In the Boiling Isles? Too many questions, too little answers. She turned to her mentor. "Eda wait. I've got something to say-"

"Uppupup." Eda interrupted her, pushing a silencing finger on her lips. "Not the right time to chit chat kid. More walking, less talking. Now chop-chop. The sooner we get outta here the better." Luz sighed. Maybe she'll try telling her later.

Unfortunately, later became never.

As soon as they landed Eda immediately got to work, something about pixie goo's potency is at its best while it's fresh. Luz tried to tell her but Eda merely threw her out of her workspace. Alone with her thoughts, Luz decided to think about the whole ordeal. What's a drone doing in the Boiling isles? Did it come from earth? Did it follow her here when she wasn't looking? The thought scared her but also intrigued her. It's not everyday you'd find a drone following you.

Although...

Something about it seems off, she saw a few drones back on earth and they were cool as heck! But its nothing compared to the one she saw earlier. It's just... too futuristic? Wait, did modern technology advanced while she was away? She has to check the internet right now. Still, whatever it was, the question still remained.

How did it get here?

"Should I tell her?" Luz asked, pacing around her room.

"Tell her what? That you saw a floating hunk of metal with nothing to show for?" King replied.

"You saw it too!"

"I don't know Luz. The Boiling Isles does have a habit in playing tricks with your mind, maybe it's nothing." he shrugged

"It literally poured out smoke King!"

"Meh, weirder stuff happened." he waved her off uncaringly.

"Whatever it is, it's up to us to find out!"

"Whatever you say Luz." King shrugged. "In the end of the day, without any proof you got nothing."

Luz halted in her steps as an idea flashed into her mind. Proof he say? A coy smile slowly formed on her face as pieces of her plan are slowly forming together. She looked down at her phone and her smile widened into a grin.

"Waiiit. You're not going back there to take a picture as proof to prove that you're not crazy are you?"

"Pfft. What? No, I'm not. I mean why would I?" She looked at King with nervously.

"I'm just saying that it's a bad idea and Eda would be furious if you did."

Sweat started to form around her forehead.

"I mean, if she found out she would totally flip and won't let you out of the house anymore."

More sweat rolled down her face as King continued.

"And she would probably won't teach you magic any more."

If sweat could sweat, Luz would be the founder of this phenomenon.

King stared at her for a few more minutes until he smiled like there's no problem. "Okay I'm done!" he twirled around his spot like a dog and slept.

Luz looked down at her phone again, this time with doubts swirling into her mind. Is it really worth it to go behind Eda's back just to- Oh who's she kidding. The island's secrets won't discover themselves you know! With that last thought in mind, she quickly got to work.

"Hey Luz! Don't forget to feed Hooty unless you want a repeat of the incident a few days ago!" Eda's voice echoed from the halls.

….Right after she feeds Hooty.

…And researching about drones.

First attempt (Same day)

Nothing in the internet matched the description of drone. Which means, whatever she saw earlier could mean either two things, one its a super secret drone that no one heard about, or two, the Boiling Isles had a few secrets up its sleeves. Whichever the case may be, it's a new mystery waiting to be discovered! She grabbed her bag and took everything she needed and head off. It took her almost three hours on foot just to get to the shoulder fueled by nothing but excitement. Once she arrived, she quickly got to work. Thankfully, she packed herself some ropes and an axe to do the job faster. She then set up traps around the forest, net traps, snares, trip wires, and even deadfall traps. She wiped the sweat off her head as she marveled on her work.

"Not bad for your first time Miss Noceda. Not bad at all." she patted her own shoulders.

*SNAP*

Not far from her, the telltale sounds of rope moving can be heard. "Ohhhh! I think I caught it!" She immediately dashed towards the triggered trap only to see...

... A person?

"Oy! Get me out of here!" he said, hanging up-side down under a tree.

"Oh my gosh! Let me help you." Luz quickly helped him escape and he sighed in relief.

"Whoever set those traps had a complete disregard for the safety of the forest, let me tell you!" he angrily exclaimed as he dusted himself off. "If I find whoever set these up I swear I'll teach them a lesson or two!"

Luz awkwardly smiled.

"Well, thank you kind stranger but i must be off! These ingredients won't gather themselves!" he whistled a tune as he head off...

...Towards another trap.

"No wait!"

*SNAP*

"AHHHHHHH!" the man let out a girlish-scream.

Luz winced, she's starting to think placing traps on a dark forest is not a good idea.

*SNAP!*

Something suddenly tightened on her ankle.

"Oh that can't be go- WAHHH!."

Second attempt

Luz rubbed her bottom, feeling a little sore after landing. "Okay, traps are a no-go." She took a few leaves off her hair. "I think the best thing i should do now is just wait for it, it's bound to come by again right?" With naïve optimism, she looked for the spot with the best view and settled herself down. "And now... We wait. Good thing i brought some books with me!" she pulled out a book, 'The Good Witch Azura'. She may have read it more than a couple of times but it didn't get less interesting.

One hour has passed…

Luz looked up from her book and scanned her surroundings, things were pretty quiet. Too quiet she might add. Even the animals were scarce, leaving her mostly alone with her thoughts.

Two hours has passed…

She already finished half-way of the book and there was still no sign of the drone. Could the island been playing tricks with her? She shook her head, it's real. It has to be.

Three hours has passed…

"WHERE. ARE. YOU?!" Luz exclaimed in anger, her patience running thin. She already finished the book a while ago and still there was nothing. Out of anger and frustration, she flipped over rocks, searched shrubs and bushes, reacting to every sound she could find. "AGGHHHHH!" As a last desperate attempt, she climbed on one of the trees and searched for the object of her frustration only to see face to face with a large bird/bee hybrid.

"Uhmmm... Nice bird... bee... thing?"

The animal growled at her and chased her down. "AHHHHHHH!" Luz screamed on top of her lungs as she ran away.

Third attempt

The sun was setting and she had nothing to show for, not to mention she still had to hike three hours to get back. Luz sighed in disappointment. What if King was right? What if the island did play some tricks on her? Thinking about it now, there was no way anyone wouldn't notice without making a huge fuss. This was just a waste of her time. Defeated and tired, she packed up her stuff into her bag. With the last item placed securely in her bag, she threw it on her back ready to go home until something caught her eye. On the corner of her view, she noticed a rather strange shadow near her. She looked around to see what could cast such a strange shadow only to see... nothing. Then she noticed the shape, its angle, how it seemed to bob up and down ever so slightly. it almost looked exactly like...

THE DRONE!

Luz gasped in shock as the realization sink in, accidentally dropping her bag in the process. Luz saw the shadow jump then darted away. "Hey come back here!" Luz chased after the shadow thankful the sun was still up but it was later short-lived as she realized the drone was heading towards the darker side of the forest. She felt her hope dissipate as her chances of finding it looked slim.

"No, no, no! Come back!" She called out.

Wait. Of course! She shoved her hands on her pocket feeling the familiar texture of paper. Her light glyphs! She pulled one out and activated it with both of her hands and felt a strong sense of satisfaction when the drone revealed its elusive shadow. "I got you now!" With renewed vigor, Luz followed in hot pursuit, pulling light glyphs after light glyphs as she chased after the invisible drone. She casted another light spell and saw the drone flickered its invisible cloak. It was just a hand's reach away! With a burst of speed she leapt towards it in an attempt to grab it only to see the huge error she made.

The drone led her towards the end of the forest, which was a huge drop towards the boiling sea.

Panic and fear overcome her as she feel herself falling down. "AHHHHH!"

On a stroke of luck, she landed on a protruding root. "Oof!" she grunted. She held on for dear life as adrenaline poured throughout her body. "I'm… I'm alive!"

*CRACK*

Her eyes widened in fear as the branch she was holding on to started to crack under her weight. "NO! NO! NO-!"

*SNAP!*

"AHHHHH!" she felt herself freefalling towards the raging water below. She closed her eyes waiting for her imminent death only to see none came. "Huh?" She dared to peek with one eye and saw she was hovering over a few meters under the deathly waters below. She looked up towards the object grabbing her and saw it was the drone from before. "Oh thank God. Please get me out!" she pleaded.

As if hearing her plea, the drone immediately doubled-back to the cliffs and flipped her upright before settling her down. Luz patted herself down, double checking if she was still in one piece, seeing all her appendages are still intact, she sighed in relief.

*CLICK*

Luz snapped her attention towards the drone. It was definitely something you'd see from a sci-fi movie only this time it was real! Her eyes traced the sleek design of the mechanical robot, her eyes marveling at its design. Her heart swelled in excitement as the more she looked at it. She had so many questions! What's it made of? Was it following her? What does it do? She had millions of questions and she can't wait to tell everyone.

Of course! She almost forgot the whole reason she was out here in the first place.

"Eda has got to see this!" She rummaged through her pockets and grabbed her phone. The drone saw the phone and its lenses narrowed. Before Luz could take a picture, something came out from one of its barrels moving at subsonic speed.

"Ow!" She moved her hand towards the affected area and took out a small dart. "Wha-?" She felt sleepy all of a sudden and before she knew it everything went dark.

"Luz? Luz? LUZ!"

Luz snapped her eyes awake "Wha-? What? What's happening?" she groggily said, a bit of saliva pouring out of her mouth.

Eda wiped the saliva off with disgust, then threw the tissue at the trash can. "What happened?" she asked.

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"Hooty found you outside asleep with your stuff scattered around. Did something happen? Are you hurt?

Outside? What was she doing outside? "I... I don't think so."

Eda grabbed her face and turned her around, examining her. Seeing no apparent injuries, she nodded in approval then she turned to King with a sour look. "King I told you to keep an eye on her!" She scolded the furry mascot.

"I did! Atleast... I think I did."

Eda sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose, she turned back to Luz. "Kid. What happened?"

Luz tried to recall the events but…

Nothing. She can't remember anything.

"I-I don't know."

Eda hummed suspiciously, she casted a quick spell on Luz enveloping her for a bit before dissipating. "Luz can you remember what you ate today?"

"I… I don't know." Luz said, a little fear pouring out of her tone.

Eda hummed. "It's just as I feared. Somebody casted an amnesia spell on you."

"Am I gonna be okay?"

"Ahhh don't worry kid. Amnesia spells are usually harmless. They're designed to make anyone forget what happened in a specific amount of time. Although for you, they made sure you forget everything that happened today." Luz's eyes widened in alarm. "I'll whip up something for you to drink. Just to be sure. King, you watch over her and I mean it this time." she added with a small glare.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm on it." he said with indifference, although in his eyes there was a tinge of worry as well.

Luz looked down on her hands and saw dirt, blisters, and pieces of wood. What happened?

In an undisclosed space

The room was filled with countless computer screens which came from different ages of technology, some still had big boxes from the back while others were about 1-3 inches thin, then there are others that didn't have a body as it displayed their screen using holographic imagery. Each screen displayed a different video, a few showed images of the local animal and plant life, while several others displayed the city of Bonesborough in different angles. In the middle of it all, sitting comfortably on a swivel chair, was a humanoid figure holding a large data drive, beside him was the drone with its memory capsule wide open. He plugged in the drive into the computer and the entire screen shut down.

"Uhmm... Is... Is this supposed to happen?"

The screen suddenly boot up, a circular blue icon appeared on screen.

"Oh it's loading."

A few minutes later

"It sure takes a while..."

...

...

...

The screen finally loaded up revealing the footage caught by the drone. "Finally! Took you long enough." the figure muttered under his breath.

The screen displayed numerous detailed data of everything it took, geographic analysis, atmospheric analysis, even a few local fauna and flora scans. The figure scrolled towards the most recent record and put it on screen. The screen showed the picture of Luz, with a complete analysis including an anatomy diagram of her internal organs, then the screen pulled up another picture which was a random witch from Bonesborough with its own respective anatomy diagram. On an in-depth examination, the screen lit up in huge red 'X' showing several discrepancies of its anatomy, mainly the heart.

"Interesting... ATLAS."

One screen lit up. "Sir?" a cold robotic voice called out from the speaker.

"Pull up local news articles regarding this... thing and pull it up on my screen."

The screen flickered into several zeros and ones until it flicked back again, this time showing several prints of newspaper articles of Luz in the headlines. Each news articles have different stories but it all boils down onto one idea.

"A 'human' in the Boiling Isles." The word 'human' sounded so foreign for the figure. He hummed in contemplation until ATLAS, the robotic voice, spoke up. "Sir, all results concluded the same thing. This human-"

"-is not from around here. I know. Which means something or someone has the capability to bring that thing here. We must find the machine that brought her here and secure it at all costs. Deploy drones nine to twelve and find this human. We must gather enough information before making our move."

Bright lights flashed one by one as a small storage area for drones lit up, each drone with their respective numbers was promptly assembled then activated. Their mission objectives flashed within their heads-up display before disappearing. A robotic voice echoed throughout the speakers. "Relaying in 3... 2... 1..." One by one each drone was zapped by an unknown type of energy making them disappear.

Back with the figure, he watched as his drones started appearing on the surface of the isles from different locations, each one travelling towards their respective destinations. He nodded in approval.

"Now, I to turn to more pressing matters."

The figure opened a small drawer revealing a small Rubik's cube. "Tell me your secrets you foul machination!" he grabbed the cube, shaking it up and down.
