Summary:

Lee learns that when he left his girlfriend three years ago he left behind more than rumors and regret.

Chapter 1: Part One

Chapter Text

Lee walked through the shadows of the small town. He hadn’t been here in years, not since he took off in the middle of the night two years ago. It still seemed mostly the same. Small, quiet, everyone knows everyone and their business. That kind of place he hated. He grew up in a place like this and he hated it with everything in him. So why was he here?

He watched the waitress pouring coffee in the little truck stop dinner filled with truckers and older towns folk. She smiled as she wrote out a check and gave a wink to an older man that placed a nice tip on her table. Lee smiled to himself. She always knew how to work a room with her sweetheart charm.

He watched her till her shift was over, watching her take off her apron and grab her jacket. Telling everyone bye as she walked through the backdoor. She stopped next to the homeless man near the dumpster, giving him a sandwich and a soda, like she does everynight. He’s been watching her for over a week now. As he climbs into his old pickup he follows her to her rundown apartment. Unlike all the other nights of watching her through the windows of her first floor apartment from the security of his pick up, he climbs out, shutting his door quietly then sneaking close to the window. He peeps in the open window, the wind blowing the curtains across his face.

He watches as she undresses and goes into the bathroom, steam flowing through the opened door. Lee moves the curtains to climb into the apartment when he hears a sound he did not expect.

“Mommy?" The soft voice of a little boy came from the bedroom.

The shower shut off and Y/N came out, wrapped in a towel. “He sweetie.” She knelt in front of the boy.

“I thirsty.” The boy’s chocolate curls bounced.

“I’ll get you some water.” She walked into the kitchen and reappeared with a cup.

Lee watched through the open bedroom door as she brought the boy back to bed and tucked him in. His mind racing. He didn’t know how long he stood there in shock. “Lee?” He turned around quickly, seeing Y/N standing there now dressed in pajamas. “I thought that was you.” She said softly with a smile. “You’ve been watching me for days.”

“You were always a good tracker.” He told her with a tight lipped grin.

“You could have knocked. Why sneak around?”

He looks down, shoving his hands in his pockets. “I didn’t know if you would’ve wanted to see me.” He clears his throat. “I thought you would hate me.”

She walked up to him and to his surprise, she placed her hand on his cheek. “I could never hate you, Lee.” She pulls his hand from his pocket and pulls him to her door. “Come in.”

“Are you sure?” He asks as they walk through the front door.

He looks around awkwardly. “You sure it’s okay that I’m here? What if your kid wakes back up?” He swallows thickly.

She watches him look around the place, feeling out of place. “It’s okay,” She tells him as he shoves his hands in his pockets again. “You can ask.”

Lee looks at her with sad eyes. “Is he?”

She can see the emotions flashing across his eyes. “Do you want to see him?”

“Can I?” He asks, his voice barely audible.

She takes his hand and carefully leads him to the bedroom where toys are scattered across the floor. He looks down and there in a little blue toddler bed sleeps a little boy that looks just like him. Lee kneels down next to the bed and watches the child sleep. She can see he is fighting back tears as he looks over the child.

“His name is Liam.” She tells him softly.

“Liam.” He whispers. “Is- is he like me?” He asks, not looking away from the boy as a tear falls down his cheek.

“No.” She kneels next to him. “At least not yet. He’s never shown any signs of being.”

“Good.” He nods, sniffling. “That’s good.” He stands walking out of the room.

“Lee,” She follows him out of the room, closing the door behind her.

“I should go.” He goes for the door but she grabs his hand.

“Wait.” She turns him to face her. “Lee, look at me.” She takes his face into her hands. “You did nothing wrong, do you hear me?” She wipes his cheeks as tears fall. “You did nothing wrong.” She pulls him into her arms and holds him as sobs in her arms.

He pulls away, taking a deep breath looking at her. “I need to go.”

“Can’t you stay a little longer?” She asks, heartbreak filling her words.

“I’ve already stayed too long.”

“Don’t you want to meet him? Talk to him?” She offers.

“It’s best if he doesn’t know me.”

“No, Lee, it’s not.”

Lee shakes his head. “I can’t be what he needs me to be. I can’t be what you need me to be. It’s impossible with what I am.” He gestures to himself.  “We both know that.” He tucked her hair behind her ear. “We tried and I almost hurt you.” His fingers graze the small crescent shape on her shoulder. “I’ll come by once in a while.” He tells her. “I’ll check in, I promise. Just in case he turns out to be like me.” She nods with tears in her eyes. He puts a finger beneath her chin and tilts her head up. “Don;t I always keep my promises?” She nods. “I came back, didn’t I?” She nods again.

“Don’t be so long next time.” She tells him.

“I’ll try.” He presses a kiss to her lips.

He turns to the door, “He’s so much like you, you know.” He pauses at the door looking back. “He even has your eyes.”

“Let’s hope that’s where it stops.” He told her then walked out of the door.

Chapter Text

She closed the back door to the diner and locked the top lock. The rain made it harder to see where she was going as she ran to the parked car at the end of the parking lot. She drove carefully to her little apartment, ready to cuddle her baby boy for a few minutes before heading to bed herself. It was past eight so the three year old may be asleep already but she hoped he was still awake for a few minutes of snuggles.

Little Liam was a little ball of energy. His bright green eyes shined through his bouncing curls as he ran around. He was very active and very slender, like his father. He had a dusting of freckles over his nose and cheeks and full lips that always had a smile tugging at the corners. Every day she was reminded of Lee when she looked at her son.

She pulled into the parking lot of her apartment complex and saw the light on in her living room. She smiled knowing that Liam would still be awake. As she walked across the parking lot, she had the uneasy feeling of being watched. Pausing, she looked behind her. Her eyes scanned her surroundings in the dimly lit parking lot. After a few moments she turned and continued to her front door. As she placed the key into the lock she heard a shuffle behind her. She turned quickly and looked around.

“Lee?” Her voice came out gently. She waited for a moment then shook her head. Just her mind playing tricks again. She opened her front door, shutting it behind herself. “Sarah, I’m back!” She called as she hung up her jacket. “Is Liam still awake?” She walked to the living room and froze.

The sight in front of her was like a horror movie.

The living room floor was covered in blood. The area rug was completely soaked in dark red. Her eyes followed a trail of blood that led to the bathroom. “Sarah?!” She called in terror as she followed the trail. She covered her mouth in dread, seeing the body of the 22 year old babysitter on the floor of the bathroom. “Oh my God!” She cried looking over the lifeless body in a pool of blood. Her neck was ripped open. The edges of her pale white skin was full of teeth marks. A child’s teeth marks. “Liam!” She called in panic, sprinting to her son’s room. Her anxiety rocketed through her seeing blood smeared across his bedroom door and covering the doorknob. She opened the door and saw her baby boy laying on the floor with his teddy in his arms, sound asleep. His little hands and face were full of dried blood. She picked up the sleeping toddler, the front of his little dinosaur pajamas drenched in blood.

She sat there on the floor holding her baby, panicked at the amount of blood but relieved he was okay. She kept checking him over and over again. Looking for any sign of an injury, looking for something other than what she knew was happening.

“No.” The voice sounded from the bedroom door making her turn quickly. Her face softened as she saw Lee standing there. His body was rigid and his face pale. “No, no, no!” He said over and over again as he went to her, kneeling in front of her and the sleeping toddler.

“She’s dead.” She tells him as tears fall from her cheeks. “Sarah-”

“Shh,” Lee pulls her into his arms for a moment before pulling away. “Listen to me.” He took her face into his hand. “Y/N!” He shouted, pulling her attention to him. ”Listen to me and listen carefully.” She nodded as more tears fell. “Pack you and Liam each a bag. Important papers, clothes, but keep it light.” Lee lets her face go and grabs a pack of wet wipes from the little stand in Liam’s room. “Take off all the bloody clothes, yours too.” He hands her the pack. “Clean all the blood off. Keep him asleep if you can.” He wipes the tears from her eyes. “Get in your car and drive to the lake two towns over.”

“What?” She asks in a blur of movements as she pulls off her toddler’s bloody clothes.

“Just do it.” He tells her, taking her face in his hands again. “Listen to me.” He tells her calmly. “Just get in your car and go. I’ll meet you there soon.”

“What are you-”

“Just trust me, angel.” He tells her with a kiss to her forehead. “Now pack and go. Now.”

Her movements all blurred together as she moved quickly, wiping all the blood off of her son then herself. She changed, leaving her and Liam’s bloody clothes on the tile floor in the corner like Lee told her to. She shoves their birth certificates and social security cards in a bag along with clothes and important belongings. She grabs a separate bag and throws a handful of Liam’s favorite toys into it as well as the little blue blanket he loves. She is standing in the middle of the room looking around when Lee walks back in.

“Okay, that’s enough, take him and go.” He hands her both bags.

“What about, what are-”

“Just go!”

She grabs Liam and is out of the door. Her hands are shaking as she buckles him into his child seat. She drove the 35 minutes to the lake two towns over, the entire drive on autopilot. When she got to the lake, she wondered how she even made it in one piece. She looked back at the sleeping toddler and thanked God he was okay and still fast asleep. She got out of her car and took several steps away from the car and hit her knees. She began to cry uncontrollably as a panic attack wracked through her and nausea rose over her.

Hours later, she was unsure how many, she’d left her watch, head lights came into view in the distance. She stood as the lights came closer. The truck pulled next to her, and Lee was sitting in the driver’s side. They just looked at one another through the window. Lee’s head hung low as he took a deep breath before stepping out.

He walked to her, stopping in front of her. “What did you do?” She asked.

Lee said nothing. He walked over to her car and opened the back door. “Take him and put him in the truck.” He grabbed the bags and tossed them in the back of the old pick up. “Clear your glove box and anything that can trace the car back to you.” He told her and grabbed a screwdriver and started taking the plate off the back of the car. He stood tossing the plate into the back of the truck. He looked over at her and she was just standing there. He walked over to her and grabbed the plush blanket from the back seat and shoved it in her arms. “Get the kid and his seat and put him in the truck, now.” He wasn’t angry but he was stern.

She grabbed the toddler and transferred him and his seat into the middle of the bench seat of the old truck. When she turned back to Lee, he was pushing her car into the lake. He watched the car until it sank deep down, away from view. He walked back to the truck. “Get in.” He told her as he climbed into the driver’s seat.

They’d been driving for hours in silence. She wanted to ask but didn’t want to know the answer. Lee didn’t offer any explanation either. He knew she would eventually ask though. But until then he kept his mouth shut and focused on the road ahead that was lit by the beams of the truck lights.

Liam was in a fitful sleep, nudging awake and moving a lot as the drive went on and on. Lee would look over at the toddler when he would start squirming but only a glance.

“We should pull over and get a room.” She said looking at Liam, adjusting his little head again.

“We should keep driving.” Lee said in a monotone. “Get as far away as possible.”

“Lee,” She looks down at her watch. “It’s two in the morning.”

“Y/N,”

“He is a child. He needs a bed to sleep in.” She exhales. “Besides, they’d look for my car not your truck.”

“Just,”

“No,” She cuts him off sternly. “He needs to get out of this carseat seat. If not, he will be hell in the morning.”

Lee purses his lips together and huffs in annoyance. “Fine.” Another few miles down the road, Lee pulls into the parking lot of an old motel. “Stay in the truck. The fewer people that see you the better.” He doesn’t look at her as he climbs out of the truck and pulls a few folded bills of cash out of his boot. She looks over at the sleeping child then back to Lee. He pays for a room then walks out to the truck climbing it. He pulls around to the back of the building and parks in front of a room. “I’ll get the bags.” He said, climbing back out of the truck.

After Lee opens the door to the room she pulls the toddler from his seat and walks him into the room. “Can you pull those sheets back, please?”

Lee looks back and sees her standing next to one of the queen beds. He hurries over and pulls the sheets back, grabbing the pillows. He watches as she carefully lays the sleeping boy down and pulls off his jacket. She gently covers him and presses a kiss to his head. The boy wraps his arms around his teddy and snuggles close to the stuffed toy.

“I can’t believe he is still so sound asleep.” She sits on the opposite bed and just watches her son sleep.

“I get really sleepy when I- when it’s been a while.” Lee says, standing on the other end of the bed  behind her, digging through the bag on the little table in the room.

After several long moments of silence, thick, heavy silence, she speaks. “What did you do?”

Lee doesn’t look up at her. “What had to be done.” He said plainly.

She turns around, looking at him. She watches as he pulls clothes out of his bag, no real emotion in his features. “What does that even mean?”

“It means,” He grabbed a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, finally looking at her. “Don’t worry about it.”

When Lee walked out of the bathroom she was laying in the bed with Liam, curled in a ball, her arm protectively around him asleep. Lee stood there for a bit, just looking at the two of them. His chest felt heavy, his stomach twisted. Seeing the child so close and watching her interact with him, so protectively. He swallowed hard before shaking his head. He tossed his clothes in the corner of the room and climbed into the opposite queen bed in the room, switching off the light.

——–

She woke up the next morning and was thrown off, feeling herself not in her own bed. She could hear a TV as she blinked her eyes open. Like a flash of heat to her chest the memory and realization from the night before crashed into her. She immediately felt the bed next to her, feeling for her son. Not feeling him, she bolted upright in the bed. Lee looked over at her, hearing the shuffling sheets.

At the small table in the corner of the room she saw Liam sitting with Lee each with a bowl cereal in front of them, cartoons on the TV.

“Hi mommy!” Liam greeted with a mouthful of cereal.

“Hey baby.” She greeted sitting on the edge of the bed.

“Want some Cheerios?!” He asked sweetly.

“No, thank you, baby.”She smiled, running a relieved hand through her son’s hair. She pressed a kiss to his hair. “Where did you get cereal and milk from?”

“Me and Lee went to the store. He got me a lollipop!”

“He did?!” She looked over at Lee. “You took him out?”

“You were asleep.” He shrugged looking back at his cereal, taking another bit. “That fucking carseat is like, designed by NASA. Took me forever to click it in place.”

She laughed. “Language, please.” She tells him. “It’s not that hard to buckle.”

“Lee said we are gonna take a road trip.” Liam pips up excitedly.

“Yeah for a little while. We’re gonna see some places.” She pushed his dark curls away. “Did you sleep good?”

“Mhm.” He nodded, taking another bite of cereal.

As he brings the spoon to his mouth she sees the dried blood beneath his fingernails. Lee watched as she swallowed hard. “Hey, bud,” Lee speaks up. “How about after you eat we go get in the bath? Get all cleaned up before we get back on the road.”

“Okay.” Liam answers over his cereal.

She doesn’t stay much to Lee aside from a word here and there, giving her attention to the boy. Lee watched her and the toddler as they moved about, getting cleaned up and ready to head back on the road. He could see they were quite close. He couldn’t help giving a soft smile here and there during their playful interactions. His chest gave a slight pull.

Lee sat on the bed, leaning back against the headboard, picking his nails with a pocket knife. He glanced up at the boy every so often while Y/N was in the shower. Liam watched him from the floor next to the bed. He can feel the little boy’s eyes on him.

He tried to ignore the feeling till he felt the tap on his leg. Lee looks to his side and sees Liam with his hand on his knee. “Can I help you?”

“Watchaya doing’?”

“Cleaning my nails.” Lee tells him, peeling the dried blood from his nails.

Liam looks at his nails and inspects them. “Mommy cleaned mine with a brush.”

“Well, I don’t have a brush.” Lee tells him, not looking up from his nails.

Liam runs to the bag and pulls something out and goes back to Lee. Lee looks down and the toddler is holding a light blue nail brush in his outstretched hand. “You can borrow mine.”

Lee smiles softly at the boy. “Thanks, but I’m okay.”

“Ready?” Y/N asks as she steps out of the bathroom, towel drying her hair.

“About that,” Lee sat up, shoving his pocket knife in his pocket. “We should figure out where we are even going.”

“We can just start driving and see where we end up.” You sit on the edge of the bed near Lee.

“Since when do you do anything without a detailed plan?” Hee looks over at her as he pulls a map from his bag.

“I don;t exactly have a plan here, Lee.”

“Mommy,” Liam tugs her arm. “Can we go to the ocean?”

“That’s only a few hours away from here. I mean we are in North Carolina.”

Lee looks up at her. “You always did want to go to California.” He gives a soft smirk. “We’d just have to figure out the money situation.” He lays out the map.

“Actually,” She stands and goes to her bag, pulling out a can. “I have that covered.”, She handed it to Lee.

He opens it and looks inside, his eyes growing large. “Where did you get all of this?”

“I worked a lot. I saved.”

“What were you saving for? A trip to China?” He say sarcastically, looking at the amount of money in the tin can.

She looks back at the toddler playing in front of the TV and then back to Lee. “Just in case I ever needed it.” Lee nodded in understanding as he placed the lid on the can. “He is so much like you that I-”

“You were preparing for it.” He handed the can back.

“I guess.”

He stood going for his bag. “You ready?”

They packed up the truck and she buckled Liam into his seat. They decided they were going to make the 38+  hour trip to California. Doing that with a toddler would be difficult and Y/N explained to Lee, who is very used to traveling solo, that they would need multiple stops and stays. Hesitantly he agrees.

They drive in silence for less than an hour before Liam is unable to keep quiet. If it were up to her and Lee the whole trip would be silent after last night. The shock of it all was still playing at her nerves and Lee could tell. But in true mama fashion, she ignored and pushed forward for her child.

“Mommy radio!” Liam sings, looking up at his mom..

She looks up at Lee, silently asking if he would be okay with it. Lee reaches a hand, turning the knob and music starts playing through the small speakers. The boy smiles happily and starts singing along to the radio. As the drive goes Liam points out animals and trees and everything else you could think of. He seems to have neverending energy as he bounces in his seat.

Around lunch time they stop at a little store and Y/N buys stuff to make sandwiches and chips. Lee fills an ice chest with ice and loads up water and to his new reality juice boxes. Lee finds a clearing down a dirt path and decides it’s a good enough place as any to eat lunch.

Secluded, private, safe.

They set up a picnic and Y/N makes sandwiches and pulls juice boxes out of a little ice chest in the back of the truck. “We can camp here tonight.” Lee speaks from where he is leaning back on an elbow on the grass.

“Really?” She looks over at him. “No more driving? It’s only been like six hours on the road.”

“Kid seems to like running around out here.” He nudges his head towards Liam playing in the field. “Let him tire himself out. I have a tent and sleeping bags in the back.”

“Hear that, baby!?” She looks over to her son. “We are gonna camp here!”

“Yay!” Liam screams with a spin before chasing a squirrel.

Lee lets out a laugh watching the toddler. She looks down at her hands, picking the grass. “When I went into the grocery store early, Sarah was on the news.” Lee’s smile faded. “Said she was attacked by a wild animal walking home.” She looked up at Lee. “Said she was found near the woods halfway home.” He cleared his throat, taking a sip from the juice box. “Lee,”

“I did what needed to be done.”

“What else did you do?” She looks at him, watching him stay silent. “Lee?”

“I took care of it.”

“How?”

“Why do you want to know?” He met her eyes.

“He’s my child. What if I have to do it next time.” She looks back down to the grass she is plucking.

Lee clears his throat. “I can maybe,” He swallows. “Whenever you settle somewhere, I can make sure he controls it. I can help him some.”

“You should have been there in the first place.” She looks up to him.

“I didn’t want him to be around this.” Lee tells her. “He didn’t need to know this part of who he is.”

“Lee this isn’t part of him, it is who he is!” She said matter of factly. “He did just like you! He killed his babysitter last night! He took a chunk out of her throat, just like you did when you were three!”

“I know!” He snapped. “I know, I’m the one who cleaned it up! I’m the one who bleached the fucking place!” He stood walking away.

She followed him to a distance that Liam wouldn’t hear. “You should have been there in the first place, Lee! You knew what signs to look for and knew what led up to it! I didn’t! I was doing this blind!”

“Why the fuck do you think I was there?!” He turned to her. She paused looking at him. “I knew he was at the same age! I stayed around watching and waiting to see if he would be like me! Since I’ve found out about him I’ve been watching and fucking waiting and praying.” His tone lowered.

Her voice softened. “You’ve been around this whole year?”

Lee looks away. “I tried to make it before he hurt her but I couldn’t. I was a town over. On my way back.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” She turned around for a moment then looked back at him. “So, you watched me- you watched me think I was going crazy missing you and you said nothing.” She pushed her long hair from her face. Lee couldn’t look at her. “Wow.” She walked away a few steps then turned back. “I can’t believe you.” She shook her head walking past Lee. “Keep an eye on your son. I need to clear my head.”

“Y/N,” He called after her but she didn’t turn back around. She just kept walking.

He watched her till she disappeared. “Where mommy going?” Lee looked down to see Liam looking up at him.

“She is just going for a walk.”

“Oh.” The little boy answers. “Lee?”

“Yeah, buddy?”

“How do you know my mommy?”

Lee kneels in front of the boy. “Well,” He clears his throat. “We knew each other for a long time.” He squints a little from the sun as he looks at Liam. “Since before you came along.”

“Why Have I never met you?”

“I- uh-  I had to go away for a while and she wasn’t too happy about that.”

“Are you gonna stay around now?” Lee says nothing, he just looks at the boy who is filled with questions. He can see himself easily in the boy. It’s more than just eyes and hair. It’s his smirk and the way he flips his hair from his eyes the exact way Lee does. The way he scrunches his nose when his is tired and likes to sing along to the radio. “I like having you around.” Liam tells him.

“Oh yeah?” Lee ruffles his hair. “Why is that?”

“I don’t know.” The little boy shrugs and looks at Lee. “I just do.”

“I think I saw a stream a little off that way.” He points. “How about we go fishing for our dinner?”

Lee can’t help the smile that forms over his face as the boy’s face lights up.

Chapter Text

Y/N walked through the thinning trees back to the truck. She wiped the remaining dampness from her cheeks and let the breeze settle her breath. After all these years Lee still knew just how to tick her off. He was talented that way. They were always good at arguing when they were younger. But the thing about Lee was that he loved just as fiercely. It’s what always kept her head over heels for the boy.

When she cleared the tree line she pushed her hair free from her face, looking up expecting to see Liam and Lee.  But she was only met with the truck. An empty truck.

“Liam?!” She called, her heart dropping into her stomach. She hurried to the truck, opening the door. “Lee?!” Panic started setting in, all calmness leaving her body.

She called again and again and still had no answer. She ran through the nearby trees, calling for them, hoping they would come into view or answer her. She was beginning to think the worst. Scenario after scenario playing in her head of one bad thing after another. An animal attack, thugs, even the thought of Lee getting found and arrested for Sarah, Liam taken by child services.

She came to a pause when she reached the edge of land. At the side of a creek, Lee was sitting next to her son with fishing poles in hand.

“Pull it back!” Lee says excitedly, guiding the small child. “Come on buddy!”

She says nothing and just stands there, simply watching. She observes how Lee is careful with the boy. He guides him and explains things to him. She thought Lee dislikes the child considering how little he has interacted with him. He hadn’t ever asked about him or anything of that matter. He saw him once when he was two. Then he shows up over a year later and scoops up her and her son.

Liam laughs and pulls her back to reality. He claps his hands when Lee pulls up a big fish and she can’t help but smile. He is so excited and Lee kneels in front of him showing him the fish, carefully pulling the hook out of its mouth.

Lee looked back over his shoulder at the sound of a twig snapping beneath her foot. His face softens when he sees her. He turns back to the boy. “Mommy is here.” He points in the direction of her walking out of the trees.

“Look mommy! I caught a fish!” Liam holds the back end of the fish up with the help of Lee.

“I see that!” She goes over and sits next to them.

“Lee says we gonna eat them tonight!”

“Does Lee know how to clean a fish?” She looks over to Lee.

“Yes,” He looks at her with a mocking smile. “Lee knows how to clean fish.” The toddler laughs. “Go over there, see if you can catch another fish.” He tells Liam, handing him the pole and points off to the side a bit.”Let me put you another worm.” He tells him as he carefully baits the hook. “Now go over there and be careful swinging that hook.” Lee rinses his hands in the creek as Liam walks off a bit and throws the line in. “Good throw!” He calls out..

“Who’s idea was this?” She asks, pointing to them fishing..

“Mine.” He places a worm at the end of his hook. “The poles were just sitting in the back of the truck. So why not put them to use?” He says wiping his hands on his shorts. “He picked up quick.” He looks back at her. “You okay?”

“I’m fine.” She looks at Liam. He is watching the water carefully and it makes her smile.

“I have a slingshot in the truck. I’ll teach him how to hunt rabbits and squirrels.” He places his pole to lean against a rock. “Good to know how to hunt and fish.”

“He doesn’t need to know how to kill animals, Lee. He is three.”

“Better to learn while young.” He shrugs. “If he is gonna-”

“He isn’t gonna need to know.” She looks at Lee, cutting him off. “He isn’t gonna live like this. This is temporary.”

“I thought it was temporary, too.” He raised a brow. “Now look at me.”

“You didn’t just end up like this, Lee.” She stood. “You chose this.” She walked away, leaving Lee sitting there.

Lee watched her with Liam and saw the bond that they had. He had a small ache in his chest knowing he should have that bond with his son. A son that was feet away and had no idea he was his father. In fact, the boy had no idea who Lee was at all. Just a random stranger that showed up one day.

Back near the truck they started a small fire and Y/N layed out sleeping bags, creating a cozy campsite. The entire time Lee cleaned the fish on a stump he explained what he was doing step by step to little Liam. Liam listened closely, having a focused attention span for a child. Lee was quick to correct him when he reached too close to the knife or tried to grab a fish bone. It surprised her how attentive he was to Liam. Lee never took an interest in him until today.

Liam watched everything he did closely, even after he finished cleaning the fish. He watched how Lee cooked them and how he tended the fire between cooking. After dinner Liam watched as he sharpened his knife on a sharpener, asking questions as to why he did this and that. Asking Lee about his tattoos and how he got certain scars. It didn’t seem to bother Lee either. After Liam ate all his dinner Lee pulled a candy out of his pocket giving it to the boy. Which Liam gladly took.

The sun had long set and Y/N helped Liam brush his teeth with a bottle of water and snuggled him into a sleeping bag. She sang to him along with the radio to some country music song that was playing softly from the battery powered radio on the tailgate of the truck.

Her voice lowers to a soft hum and Lee looks over to her. “He likes having you sing him to sleep, doesn’t he?”

She smiled, looking fondly at her son. “I used to sing him to sleep all the time. When I was pregnant I sang to him in my belly.”

“I bet that was adorable.” Lee had a gentle look in his eyes.

“Yeah, I don’t get to sing him to sleep as much as I used to with work.” She looks up at Lee. “He gets it and doesn’t make a big deal.”

“He’s out.” Lee chuckled, looking at the sleeping boy.

“He had a very adventurous day.” She smiled looking back down at her son. Lee looked over at her and smiled. “What?” She asked, seeing that gleam in his eye. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

He stood, walking over to her. “Come with me.” He took her hand, pulling her up from the ground.

“Where are we going?” She asked as Lee pulled her to the back of the truck.

“Wait a minute.” He started scanning the dial on the radio, stopping on a slow ballad.

He turned the music up just a little more and turned, taking her hand. “Lee,” She shook her head with a smile as he took her waist softly.

He held her close as they gently swayed to the music. The cool night breeze whirled around him as he pulled her closer to him. Her cheek pressed to his shoulder, his lips in her hair. For that small moment they forgot all the bad from before.

“Remember when we used to sneak out of our houses and dance in the parking lot of the Tastee Freeze?” Lee smiled into her hair.

“I had my first kiss in that parking lot.” She gested, poking fun at him.

“I was 14, I did my best.” He laughed.

She looked up at him and her smile faded quickly as she looked into his eyes. They were nowhere near as innocent as the eyes of the boy he was back then. It brought her back down from the clouds really fast.

“Lee, why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“All of this.” She shrugs with a gesture. “Going to California, showing him things, cleaning up-”

“He is my son. What am I supposed to do?”

“Then where were you the last three years?” She dropped her arms and backed away. “You just left.”

“Y/N-” He reached for her but she slapped his hand away.

“You know what, no.” She shook her head. “I’m not gonna do this. It’s not fair.” Lee watched her as tears began to rise in her eyes. “I showed up at your house and you were gone!” She shoved him. “You were there one day and when I went  to your house your mom told me you’d left earlier that morning! You never came back!” She was in his face, nearly screaming. “Do you know how it felt only two weeks later, sitting in the bathroom with that positive test?! And you, nowhere to be found! To have people look at you and know that the father of your child just walked away!”

“I didn’t know.” He slips his hand to her cheek. “If I would have known-”

“When you did know you still left!” She pushed him harder. “You still left!”

“I hoped he wouldn’t be like me!” Lee tried to reach for her again. “That’s the last thing I wanted!”

“You watched for over a year Lee! You watched me struggle and saw me cry, wishing you’d have stayed and you never let me know you were there!” She slammed her fish into his chest. “You were right fucking there!” She sobbed into his chest.“You were gonna stay gone if he wouldn’t have done what he did! You were gonna leave us alone!”

“Because you’re better without me!” He yelled back at her. “Look at me!” He gestures to himself. “I’m not a father! I have no patience with kids! I am no husband either! I was bad at being a boyfriend!” He waves a hand to her. “Look how much I’ve hurt you!”

They both fell silent and she walked to him, standing almost directly in his face. “All we needed was you.” Anger was seething through her. “I wanted you around even after I found out what you were. After finding out I was pregnant, knowing what you could do, I still wanted you.”

He took her face into his hands. “I just wanted to keep you and him away from this. It was my burden to bear, not yours.”

“When you love someone you share those burdens. And I thought you loved me.” She pulled away and walked back over to where Liam was lying down.

She got beneath the blanket and put her arm around the boy and never spoke to Lee again that night. Lee slept farther away from them near the truck that night giving her space. He may not have been showing it but deep down he was broken. He was broken and everything he needed to put himself back together was right in front of him. But he wasn’t selfish enough to reach out and take it.

The sun was barely up over the lands when Lee was jolted awake by the sound of rustling and the cracking twigs. “Where do you think you’re going?” Lee sat up from his sleeping bag, looking at the toddler walking past his still sleeping mother..

“I need to potty.” Liam told him with urgency. “I don’t want to wet the bed!”

“Come on.” Lee pushes the bag off himself. “You shouldn’t go off on your own.”

“I’m almost 4!” Liam tells Lee with a matter-of-fact tone. As if one year will make such a difference when you aren’t even old enough for kindergarten yet.

“So!” Lee answers with the same playful tone as he walks the boy over to the tree line. “Pick a tree.” He taps him on the back of Liam’s head playfully as he goes to his own.

After they mark their territory, Lee brings him to the creek where they wash their hands and Lee splashes cold water in his face to wake himself up a little.

“Are we leaving today?” Liam asks as he sits next to Lee.

“Yup, gonna get some more miles in.”

“Where will we sleep tonight?”

“I don’t know yet.” Lee sits on the patch of grass next to Liam. He can still feel the dampness of the morning on the grass. “Maybe another campsite or a motel. Where do you want to sleep?”

“I like camping.” Liam looks up to him, playing in the water with a stick.

“Think we can get your mom to sleep outside again?” Lee smiles at him.

“If we ask nicely.” Liam scrunches his nose. Lee gives a little chuckle. He turns back to the water and watches the fish jump in the stream. “Hey, Lee?” That little voice filled with questions speaks.

“Yeah?”

“Where do you live?”

It was an innocent enough question. One Lee thinks about before speaking. “I used to live in Kentucky. Not far from where you and mommy lived. Before she moved to North Carolina. Now I moved around a lot.”

“How come?” He looks up at Lee, those green eyes sparkling in the morning sun. “Why don’t you stay somewhere?”

“People like me don’t do well with a home.” Lee tells him, tossing a rock in the creek.

“Don’t you want a home again?”

“I do.” Lee confesses. “But-”

“Why don’t you stay with me and mommy.” Liam says before he could finish his statement.

“I don’t think mommy would want me to stay.” Lee tells him with a tight lipped smile.

“But I do.”

“You do what?”

“Want you to stay with us.”

“Oh yeah?” Lee chuckles.

“I like you.” He walks to Lee and wraps his little arms around his shoulders.

Lee’s face goes soft and he stills for a moment. Liam lays his head on Lee’s shoulder and Lee hesitantly and gently wraps his arms around the child. It hit him suddenly. This is his first time hugging his son. Holding him. He fights back tears, feeling his son in his arms. His chest has a feeling he can’t identify and for a brief moment. The thought of sticking around doesn’t sound so bad.

He wraps his arms tighter around the boy and buries his face into his hair, inhaling. It took so much in him not to sob at the feeling in his stomach and chest.

Liam makes himself comfortable on Lee’s lap. They spend the early morning with Lee showing him how to skip rocks. Or, well, try to skip rocks. Liam doesn’t exactly have the best aim, which makes Lee laugh.

“Lee?” Liam looks up at him and Lee gives his attention. “Are you mad at mommy?”

“No, buddy.” Lee rubs his back, surprised at the sudden question. “Why would you think that?”

Liam shrugs. “You don’t talk to her much.”

Lee sighs. “I’m- I’m not mad at mommy.” He adjusts the boy on his lap. “Mommy just,” He considers his words carefully. “Mommy doesn’t like some of the things I’ve done.” He watches the boy’s face drop as he looks away. “What is it, little dude?”

“Mommy will be mad at me, too.”

“Why do you think that?” The little boy sighs and Lee can see his lip quiver. “You can tell me. We’re buddies, aren’t we?” He urges.

“I did something bad.”

“Like what.”

Liam looks up at Lee. “Have you ever hurt someone?” He drops his head lower. “Because I did.”

“Are you talking about Sarah?” He rubs Liam’s back and Liam nods his head as a tear falls onto his little hands. Lee was thrown off at his urge to comfort the child and ease him. “Hey,” Lee turns Liam to face him. “Look at me.” He dips his head for Liam to be able to see him. “I know about what happened.” Liam still kept his eyes down.

“No you don’t.” Liam pouts.

“Did you get really hungry?” The boy looked up at Lee in wonder at how he knew that. “Regular food didn’t help?” Liam nodded. “It made your tummy?”

“Then I did something really bad.”

“After the bad thing, did you feel better?”

“I was full.” Liam told him. “My tummy didn’t hurt anymore.”

“I didn’t mean to hurt her. I liked Sarah.”

“I know you did. But it wasn’t your fault.” The boy said nothing and Lee continued. “You couldn’t control it and it kind of just happened.” The boy concentrated on Lee’s face. “Can you keep a secret?”

“Like a best friend secret?” Liam looks up to him.

“Exactly. Like a best friend secret.” Lee smiled at the sudden excitement. “You can’t tell anyone, okay? Except mommy. Mommy already knows.”

“I promise.”

“Pinky swear?” Lee holds out a finger.

“Pinky swear!” Liam loops his little finger with Lee’s.

“I get hungry like that, too.”

“You do?!” Liam’s eyes grow wide.

“I do. And I know it's scary.”

“What if mommy gets mad at me, too?” His pout breaks Lee’s heart.

“No, buddy.” He pulls the little boy into his chest. “Mommy loves you. She understands.”

“But- but she’s mad at you for it.” He stutters.

“No.” He runs his fingers through his curls. “She is mad at me for something else.” With a finger beneath the boy's chin he lifts his face to look at him. “Mommy will love you no matter what. You know how I know that?”

“H-how?” He wipes at his round cheeks, tears beginning to fall.

“Because when she found out about me getting hungry like that, she still loved me.”

“She did?”

“Of course she did. Mommy’s have love deep down that goes past anything!”

He looks up to Lee. “Does your mommy still love you?”

“Well,” Lee’s smile fades. He takes a breath. “My mommy doesn’t know the secret. So I left to keep that secret.”

“But my mommy knows the secret.”

“Well, not all mommy’s can know the secret. Your mommy is special.”

“She is?”

“Oh yeah! Your mommy is special enough that she knows the secret and loves us anyway.”

Liam takes a deep breath, his tears drying a little. “Now that mommy knows I’m like you, can you stay?”

“You really want me to stay?”

“Well, I don’t have a daddy. We can pretend you’re my daddy. For a while anyways.”

Those words do something to Lee. He feels scared to death and proud at the same time. He doesn’t want to make things harder for Liam and Y/N but at the same time can’t imagine not being there now. Lee just holds Liam close. He doesn’t say anything as he fights back the tears. Liam twirls his little fingers in the bottom of Lee’s shirt as they sit next to the creek.

The sun has almost fully risen over the trees when he hears the soft voice from next to him.

“Lee?” Liam looks up at the man.

“Yeah, buddy?”

“I’m hungry.”

“You want to what?!” Y/N’s voice came out higher than she intended. Even though she was whispering it was easy to hear the truth behind her hushed tone. “Are you out of your damn mind?!”

“Shh!” Lee looks at the toddler on the bed and then grabs her elbow, pulling her out of the motel room. Leaving a crack in the door he turns to her. “I’m just suggesting-”

“You are suggesting taking a three year old to kill a person!” Her voice is a strained hush as she looks around to see if anyone was around.

“He’s almost four.” Lee says low and she narrows her eyes warningly at him. He sighs. “Can you please calm down?” He asks calmly.

“No!” She walks away a little, bracing herself on the hood of the truck. “No, I will not calm down!” She turned back to Lee. “You are not doing this!” She sticks her finger in his face. “You are not gonna just swoop in and take over!”

"I'm not trying-!"

"I've done this for three years alone. You aren't just gonna come in and take the reigns just because-"

"I don't want to!" He holds up his hands in defense.

“Really?! Because it seems like it with your buddy buddy attitude with him all of a sudden! After not paying him an ounce of attention before yesterday-”

“Would you rather him rip someone else's throat out?!” Lee spits suddenly. She quiets instantly, looking at Lee in surprise. She drops her hand, withdrawing her finger from his chest. “If you deny him this he will do that again.” His voice lowers again. “Look, I know I wasn’t there. I Know it’s been all you. But I’m here now.” Lee places his hands on her upper arms. “I’m trying to, I don’t know, be there- here, for him. You don’t understand this like I do. And I know you want to help him in every way you can. But this, this is the one part you can’t help him with.” He rubs her arms soothingly. “Let me take him with me. I’ll do the dirty work and he’ll get to…eat.” She shakes her head, pulling away from him. She starts pacing back and forth in front of the motel room door. “He won’t be killing anyone. It will be me.” Lee grabs her, stopping her. “He’ll just get what he needs.” She stops, staring at him, letting his words settle in her mind.

“I’m gonna go with you.”

“No.” Lee shakes his head. “I don’t want you to be around that.”

“I am around it, Lee.”

“I- I don’t want you to see me doing that.” He places his hands on her face. “Trust me.” His eyes are holding something she can not understand. “Please.”

She shuts her eyes. “Be careful with him, Lee.” She breathes out, looking up at him. “Protect him.”

“With my life.” He pulls her into his arms.

“You can’t do it in front of him. I- I get he will- just don’t let him to see the actual-”

“I won’t.” Lee rubs a soothing hand over her back.

“When are you going to do it?” She asks, rubbing the back of her neck nervously as she steps away from him.

“I want to do it tonight. We don’t know how long he can hold off his hunger.” Lee looks back through the crack in the door at the boy laying on his stomach in the queen bed, laughing at cartoons. “The fact that he was able to even tell the difference so easily, so quickly after the first time,” He shakes his head. “I’d rather do it before it grows.” She nods again, looking at her son on the bed.

“Okay, um. I don’t- what do I do?” She shuts her eyes and shakes her head. “Do I-”

“You are gonna stay here, with him for a while. I’m gonna glance to see if I can find anything. If I do, I’ll come back for him.” She nods again, taking a breath. “Trust me, okay?”

“Okay.” She nods before walking back into the room.

Lee grabs the keys to his truck and Liam quickly notices. “Lee, where you goin’?”

“I am running out for a bit.” He sits on the bed next to Liam. “Can you do me a favor while I’m gone?”

“Okay!”

“Can you keep your mom safe for me?”

Liam nods his head quickly. “I can do that!”

“That’s my man!” Lee stands and high fives the boy. “I’ll be back soon.”

She paused at the door as Lee walks out. “I hate this.”

“I know you do.” He kisses the top of her head.

“I’m still pissed at you.” Her eyes shoot up to his. “This doesn’t get you off the hook.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it, babygirl.” He winks as he walks to his truck.

She rolls her eyes, closing and locking the door.

Lee stays gone for two and a half hours. It is just past midnight when the knock on the motel room door wakes her. She wipes the sleep from her eyes as she looks through the peephole to see Lee. She unlocks the door, letting him in.

“Where is he?” Lee asks, walking in.

“He fell asleep an hour and a half ago. Where have you been?”

“It took me a while to find the right one.”

“The right one?” She raises a brow.

“I’m not gonna feed my kid someone who is strung out on dope.” Lee says as he walks past her to the sleeping boy.

“Okay, for the sake of my sanity can you rephrase that in the future?”

Lee laughs as he kneels next to the bed. “Hey, buddy.” He rubs his back gently. Liam scrunches his face just like Lee as he begins to wake. “Come on, buddy. I have something for you.”

“What is it?” Liam stretches, sitting up in the bed.

“You’ll have to come with me to see it. Come on! We’ll go for a ride!”

Lee scoops the boy up in his arms and turns to her. “Take the pack of wet wipes for…after.” She tells him.

“We’ll be back soon.” Lee tells her, pressing a kiss to her head. “Lock the door behind us.” He tells her as he walks out, hearing her turn the heavy lock on the door.

“We’re going for a ride without mommy?” Liam yawns.

“Yeah, this is a super secret truck ride.”

The drive isn’t far, an abandoned baseball field on the outside of the town. Overgrown grass and broken down buildings. An easy place not to be seen. When the truck pulls to a stop Lee looks to Liam. “Okay buddy, I need you to listen and do what I say. I am gonna do something to make your tummy stop hurting.”

“You will?” The hopeful look on Liam’s face makes Lee’s heart soften a little more.

“I will. I’m gonna make it all better.” He unbuckles the boy and helps him out of the carseat. “I need you to sit down here.” He guides him to the floorboard of his truck. “Now, I need you to put your hands over your ears when I leave the truck. Keep them there and count to 100 in your head.” He taps the boy’s forehead. “When you get to 100 I’ll be back and I’ll help the tummy ache go away.”

“Okay.” Liam says trustingly.

“Don't come out till I come get you, okay?” Liam nods. “Pinky promise?” He holds out his pinky.

“Pinky promise.” Liam tells him, looping his little finger with Lee’s.

Lee shuts the door and looks through the window seeing Liam covering his ears. He smirks and starts to walk off.

“Hey sweetie.” The sound of a sultry voice calls. Lee turns to see a young blond dressed skimpily walking toward him. Her tight tank top was practically see through, easy to tell she had on no bra. Her skirt was so short he was sure she would flash everyone if she bent over too far. “I thought you chickened out on me.”

Lee gives a shy, boyish smile. “Nah, I was just ditching some friends” He hitches a thumb behind him. “I wasn’t sure if this was the right place.” He rubs his lower lip, eyes focused on her. “Kind of in the middle of nowhere.”

“This place is good for…meeting people. Privately.” She runs her tongue over her lower lips as she walks closer to him. “You could have invited your friends.” She runs a cheap manicured nail painted a God awful pink down his chest. “Could have been a party.” Lee chuckles but not at her comment. He thinks of how fast Y/N would have snatched this girl and put her in her place, painfully.?”

“So,” Lee glanced back at his truck for a brief second then back at the girl. “What did you have in mind for this little private meeting?” He looks at her, his eyes dragging up and down her body.

She looks behind her at an old shed near a line of trees on the edge of the old field. “Come here,” She nudges her head towards the shed. “Follow me.” She pulls him along to follow her.

He looks back at the truck once more, making sure Liam isn’t peaking. Once behind the old shed she wastes no time pushing him against the back of the metal building.

Her hand reaches down, gliding over his clothed crotch. “You don’t waste no time, do you?” He asks as her lips are on his neck, he grimaces at the feel of the sticky lip gloss trailing down his skin.

He shut his eyes as ran his hands over her body, wrinkling his nose, spelling the booze on her. Her skin was cold and clammy. This girl, he’d observed her for hours, and he listened carefully. She was a bad girl with a taste for men she thinks she can rip off. Take his cash and anything else she could get her hands on. That was her game. Teasing and luring men into her web of seduction. Then after she tempted and teased them enough she would take what she wanted and be gone. She was desperate to take any man on a high so she could get her hands on their wallet. Tonight Lee had been her target

She licked over his lips and leaned in for his mouth. Lee dragged his hand up her body, sliding his hand around her throat. She smiled. “You like it a little rough?”

He gave a gentle squeeze, his mouth twisting into a grin. “No.” He pulls her close to his face, his breath over her lips making her stomach turn in anticipation. “I like it a lot rough.” He hums over her mouth.

He squeezes her throat harder. She gave another giggle. When his hand continues to tighten around her neck her smile soon fades. Suddenly her hands fly up to his hand. She starts to panic, slapping at him to let her go. “Stop it!” She tried to scream but it was a gurgling mumble.

Her face reddens as Lee tightens his grip on her neck. He slowly spins her around, her eyes locked on his in terror, pushing her back against the shed. Applying as much pressure as he can, he watches her eyes filling with tears, fear rushing through her as her shaking hands try in desperation to get him to let go.

As she turns dark red and then purple, her grip weakens on his hands. As she begins to go limp he carefully lowers her to the ground, his grip on her neck never loosening. Carefully he lays her down to the dirt as he feels her pulse beneath his hands slowing down to a stop. He watches the light in her eyes die out then he holds tight for a moment longer.

Once he knows for sure she is gone he releases his hand. He then reaches and shuts her eyes.

Back at the truck Liam is on number 82 when Lee opens the passenger’s side door. “Hey, buddy!”

“You’re back!” Liam reaches for Lee.

“You weren’t scared were you?” Lee asks as he lifts the boy into his arms.

“No!” He shakes his head.

“I got something for you.” He walks to the back of the shed. “Something for us.To share.” He pauses. “I’m gonna need you to not freak out. Okay?”

“Okay.” Liam looks at Lee. “But my tummy really hurts.”

“I know. This is gonna fix that.” Lee tells him as he walks behind the shed.

When Lee comes to a stop next to the body he expects Liam to begin to panic. Instead Liam gives a small head tilt upon seeing the lifeless woman. “Who’s that?”

Lee sets the child down and kneels next to him. “She isn’t important. What’s important is you won’t have the hurt in your tummy any more.”

“It’s okay?” Liam asks Lee with raised brows. “I won’t get into any trouble?”

“No you won’t! It’s okay! Come on, Let’s take off your jacket and shirt.” He pulls the dinosaur shirt from the boy then lifts his own shirt over head. “Come here.” He grabs the boy to his side of the lifeless body. “Start here,” He points to the neck. “It’s easier to tear into.” Liam leans in close and Lee can hear him inhale the scent of the dead body. “Go on.” Lee encourages. The sound of ripping flesh was the only thing that Lee could hear as the boy began in at her neck. “Good?”

“Mhm!” Liam mumbles around a mouthful of tissue.

Lee leans in next to his son and tears into the shoulder as he gets his own mouthful. Blood spurts from Liam and hits Lee in the cheek. “Oops.” Liam mumbles, whipping his little mouth, Lee giving a chuckle around another big bite.

As Liam works over her neck Lee stops him. “Carefull, she had a necklace. We don’t want you to choke.”

“Can you take it off?”

“No, we leave it on so it looks like an animal attacked her.”

“Is that how we keep the secret?” Liam asks as he wipes the blood from his chin.

“That’s right!” Lee wipes his chin with a free hand.

It was 2:45 am when the knock on the motel room door made Y/N jump. She ran to the door, opening it. “I sleepy.” Liam yawned as Lee walked in carrying the boy.

“I know but you need a bath.” Lee tells him as he walks straight to the bathroom.

“I’ll bathe him.” She reaches for her son but Lee pulls away.

“Hold on.” Lee steps back.

“Why? What’s wrong.” She asks, ready to panic.

“Nothing he just. . . got messy.”

“Messy.” She eyes him.

“Yeah.” He tosses the shirts on the dresser. “I wiped him up the best I could but-” Liam turned in Lee’s arms and she saw the mess of blood all over her toddler. She covered her mouth with a gasp and Lee shook his head in a signal for her to remain calm.

She swallowed hard, holding back a scream. “Wow!” She strained out but still managed to sound playful. “You did get messy.” She reached to touch him but pulled her hand back.

“I’ll go take care of it.” Lee told her. “Just, relax.”

She nodded with a lump in her throat the size of a jawbreaker. She sat on the edge of the bed and listened to her child splash and play in the bath like any normal three year old in a bubble bath.

Chapter Text

The sky was dark as she pulled the old pick up into the parking lot in front of the motel room. She quietly eased her way into the room and set the bag down. She checked in on Liam, pressing a kiss to his head. He was lightly snoring in a deep sleep, even at almost ten in the morning.

She turned to the opposite bed and was surprised to find it empty. She looked around the small room as if she would have missed him somehow. She walked and peered out the window to see if Lee was outside smoking and she still didn’t see him. When she turned around she gasped then a hand covered her mouth just as she was about to scream. Realizing in the beam of light that showed through the partially opened curtains that it was Lee, she immediately relaxed. He let out a hushed laugh at her being scared.

“You ass!” She whispered, slapping his arm, pushing him away.

“I’m sorry!” He laughed again. “I wasn’t trying to scare you.” She rolled her eyes at him as she walked past. “So you're stealing my truck now?”

“No.” She pulled out a bag. “Here.” She handed it to him.

“What’s this?” He opened it, pulling out a pair of jeans.

“You have like two pairs of jeans and three shirts. I figured you could use a few more pieces of clothes.” She handed him another bag. “I think I got your sizes right.”

“Where did you get these?” He asked, still standing still, looking at the clothes in his hands.

“A thrift store in town.” She pulled a few toddler shirts and jeans from another bag, folding them and placing them in Liam’s bag. “Are you heading back to bed for a little more sleep?” She looks back at him still standing there. “What?”

“Nothing.” He places the bag down. “Just, thank you.” He shoves his hands into his jeans. “I appreciate it.”

“Well, it’s getting colder. You need more covering for those skinny ass chicken legs.”  Lee laughed softly. “I also got you a better jacket. An actual jacket and not just a flannel.” She stands and turns, seeing Lee, his face is soft but his eyes are questioning. “What?”

“I’m sorry.” Lee says with a breath. She opens her mouth to speak and he stops her. “I’m sorry I left. I’m sorry I kept leaving.” He steps closer. “People have walked on you your whole life. I swore to you I would never do that to you and I did. I did it to our son, too.” He places his hand on her cheek. “I deserve your anger. I deserve your hate.”

“I don’t hate you, Lee.” Her voice came out in a strained whisper. “If I did this wouldn’t hurt so much.”

“I’m sorry I hurt you. I’m sorry I keep hurting you.” He pushed her hair from her face, his thumb stroking her cheek. “You did such an amazing job with Liam.”

“He still needs you, you know?”

Lee dropped his hand and stepped back, sitting on the edge of the table in the corner. “I know.” He laced his fingers together in his lap. “Look, I know you don’t owe me anything and I get it if you say no.” He was looking at the floor, his bare toes digging into the carpet. “I w- I want to stick around.” He looks up at her.

“For how long?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. A while.” He shifted a little. “Till he learns how to handle himself with all of this.”

“And what about after?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you really think you’ll be able to just pick up and leave?” She gives a huff of annoyance and rolls her eyes. “Of course you can. You did it before.”

“Come on, that’s not fair.” He stood going towards her. “I just wanted you safe. I wanted him safe. I wanted to save the both of you from this.” He gestures around himself. “It’s a shit show of a life and I wanted more for you and him.” She stood there with her arms crossed over herself, looking up into those green eyes that made her forget how to breathe. “Can’t you understand that?”

“Lee, I can’t take you walking out on him like you did to me.”

“Then I won’t walk out.” He says sure of himself. “I may go away from time to time-”

“No.” she shook her head and walked away. “Like you did to Kayla? She was always mad and never forgave you.”

“No, not like Kayla.” He follows her. “It will be different.”

“How?” She turns back to him clearly frustrated. “How, Lee? You don’t know how to stay.”

“I’ll learn.”  He looks her directly in the eyes. “I’ll figure it out. I’ll try my damnedest.”

For a brief moment she sees the boy she fell in love with and it's almost too much to take. She turns away from him and wipes at her eyes, making sure she wasn’t crying. She was so close to breaking in his arms.

“Mommy?” The little voice broke through.

“Yeah baby?” She turned and walked to the side of the bed. “Hey, sleepy head.” She ran her fingers through his dark curls.

“I’m thirsty.”

“Here you go, buddy.” Lee walked over, handing Liam his sippy cup.

They watched as he downed his water from his dinosaur cup. He handed it back to Lee and Lee placed it aside. “I sleep long.” He said playfully.

“Yeah you did!” She smiled down at him.

“You feel okay?” Lee asked, pushing his curls from his face. Liam nods, rubbing his eyes with a yawn. “No more tummy ache?”

“No,” Liam crawls into Lee’s lap and sits with his head on Lee’s shoulder. Lee freezes unsure of what Liam was doing. When the child settled comfortably on Lee’s lap she looked over at them and gave a soft smile. “Are we driving more today?”

Lee placed his hand on Liam’s back and started rubbing up and down soothingly. “Yeah, we gonna get on the road in a bit.” The boy lays sleepily in Lee’s arms while Y/N is moving around the room, starting to pack up their things. “I’ll help.” Lee says, sitting up.

“No, I got it.” She tells him, waving her hand. “You hold him. He likes to be cuddled when he wakes up.” Lee sits back and holds the boy close to his chest as he continues to rub soothingly over his back. “Just lean back and relax. Snuggle him like a teddy bear.” She smiles seeing Lee look borderline stiff. She knows Lee had never had to do this before and it's foreign to him.

After Liam gets his morning cuddles Lee helps Y/N pack the rest of the room and load up the truck. As they drive out of town they see police lights and hear sirens going towards the old abandoned ballpark. She and Lee share a look as they continue to drive.

They were two towns over and the radio was playing low through the speakers. Liam suddenly started to jump in his seat and tap on Lee’s arm.

“What?!” Lee asks, unsure what is wrong.

“Put it louder!” Liam points to the radio.

Lee looks at the child and turns up the volume. He looks at Y/N. “This kid likes KISS?!”

Yeah! Yeah!” Liam starts singing with the radio.

“Does that answer your question?” She looks over at Lee.

“Hell yeah!” Lee turns up the radio and starts singing along.

She can’t help but laugh and the two. They sang and even headbanged. Moments like this Y/N looked at Liam and couldn’t deny how much he was like his dad. She wondered if Lee could see it. He was still careful around him, unsure what to do when Liam went to him. Even the simplest things made him unsure.

But he tried.

“While we’re in Kentucky I want to stop and see Kayla.” Lee told her as they drove down the highway.

“Who’s Kayla?” Liam looked up at Lee with that scrunched face.

Lee laughed. “Your face is gonna stay stuck like that.” Stopping at the red light he looked at Liam. “Kayla is my little sister.”

“Can I meet Kayla?” Liam asked as Lee pulled forward when the light turned green.

“I haven’t seen her since I moved from Kentucky!” She looked over to Lee.

“I’m sure she would love to see you.” He glanced over at her. “I know you two were close.”

Y/N looked down at her hands. “I should have kept in touch. It was just too hard.”

“I know.” Lee reached a hand over the back of Liam’s car seat and rubbed her shoulder. “Tell you what. We will go to the Tastee Freeze and I’ll call Kayle from the payphone and have her meet us out there.”

“Sounds good.” She smiles over at him.

“How does that sound, buddy? Ice cream and playing at the park?”

“Ice cream!” Liam shouts with his arms in the air.

After another thirty minutes of driving Lee pulls into the parking lot of the local ice cream shop. Lee pulls Liam out of the driver’s side and sets him on the ground. “What flavor of ice cream do you want?”

“Chocolate!”

“One a cone?”

“Yes!”

“Alright! Go play!” He taps the back of Liam’s head and he runs to the little playground next to the ice cream shop. “I’ll go call Kayla.” He tells her as she walks by him. “Strawberry with sprinkles?”

“How do you still remember that?”

“How many ice creams have I bought you?” He raises his brow and she laughs.

After calling his little sister Lee walks to the counter to order the ice cream. He keeps looking back at Liam and Y/N running in the playground. He doesn’t realize it but he is smiling.

“He’s adorable.” The voice of a woman pulls Lee from his staring.

“I’m sorry?”

“Your son, he’s adorable.” The older woman repeats, pointing to Liam in the playground. “He looks just like you.”

Lee’s smile grows. “Yeah, he’ll grow out of that.” He chuckles, looking at the older woman.

“Nonsense,” She pats his arm. “You’re a handsome young man.” She smiled up at him. “Weird hair, though.” She laughs and Lee chuckles again.

“Thank you, ma’am.”

“I’m sure you and your wife have your hands full with him.”

Lee looks back at Y/N, pushing Liam on the swing. “Yeah, he is a handful.”

“Have a nice day, dear.” She tells him before walking off.

Lee walks back to the playground area and hands Y/N and Liam their ice cream, taking a bite of his. He glances back a few times and Y/N notices.

“What’s wrong?”

“Oh, nothing.” Lee shakes his head and watches Liam playing with his ice cream.

“No, you have that look on your face.” She tells him, sitting next to him on the top of a picnic table.

“What face?”

“Confused.”

Lee gives a soft laugh. “I’m not confused.” He looks down at his cup of chocolate ice cream. “I'm just- a lady at the counter.” He clears his throat. “She told me I had an adorable son.” He smiled and looked up at her. “And that my wife and I must have our hands full.”

“Oh?” She chuckled.

“And I didn’t correct her.”

“Lee!” A voice from the parking lot called.

Lee looked over his shoulder and saw his little sister running toward him. He placed his cup down and ran to his sister, lifting her in a spin.

“Hey, idiot!” He greeted.

“Oh my God, Y/N!” She reached, moving from Lee to Y/N. “What are you doing here?!”

“Hey, Kay!” She embraced the younger girl. “I’ve missed you!”

Kayla backed away. “Where have you been?! Last I saw you was only a few weeks after Lee took off. Word was you were pregnant.”

“I was. I had a son.”

“What?! Where is he?! Is he here?!” Kayla had a mix of surprise and excitement as she looked for the child.

“He’s here. Liam!” She called and the boy came running. She lifted the boy and his face had chocolate all over it. “This chocolate covered mess is my boy, Liam. Liam, this is Lee’s sister, Kayla.”

“He is so adorable!” Kayla gushed.

“Hi, Kayla! Wanna play?”

“Sure, I’ll meet you out there.” Kayla said with a smile. Y/N placed him down and he ran back to the slide. Kayla looked at Lee and punched him in the arm.

“Ow!” Lee screeched.

“You’re the one that knocked up Y/N!?”

“I didn’t know at the time!” Lee shrugged.

“He didn’t know until recently.” Y/N told Kayla. “We ran into each other in North Carolina. That’s where Liam and I were living.”

“So what now? You gonna ditch them and drop in every few months like you do me and mom?” Kayla looked at her brother.

“No, that’s not what I’m gonna do.” Lee tells her. “I don’t know what I’m doing here. I’m just trying to be there.”

“What does that even mean?” Kayla asked.

“I decided to pack up Liam and move to California. Lee is coming with us.” She told her.

“So are you two like, together again?”

“No!” Y/N and Lee say in unison.

“No we- we’re just friends.” Y/N adds with a smile. “We still haven’t told Liam who Lee is yet.”

“Are you gonna tell him?” Kayla looked at her. “I’d like him to know I’m his aunt. Hell, I know mom would like to meet her grandchild.”

“Baby steps, Kay.” Lee tells his sister. “I’m still trying to figure all this out.” He motions with his hands in a circle. “But for now why don’t you go play with him.”

Kayla hugs Lee. “At least you’re doing the right thing now.”

Lee doesn’t say anything as Kayla walks off and goes to talk to Liam. It isn’t long till they are running through the park together. Y/N and Lee sit back on the top of the picnic table and Lee looks over to her.

“We can stay at my aunt’s house tonight.” She looks over at him. “Let him sleep in a bed, get a good meal and a bath.”

“You don’t think your mom would mind?”

“I’ll have to make a stop eventually to see her. Pretty sure she has an earful for me. It’s been a month since I’ve been back here.”

“I can go with you. Soften the blow.” Y/N offers. “I mean, I don’t know about telling her about Liam yet, but-”

“We can hold off on that for a while. I just wanted to tell Kayla. She isn’t stupid, she would have figured it out. My mom may, too.” He finally looks over at her. “She’ll ask.”

“I know.” She looks down at the leaves blowing across the ground. “But if we tell Liam and you do disappear-”

“I know.” Lee agrees with a nod. “I know. But, Y/N,” He looks at her and she meets his gaze. “I am trying. I just have no idea what I’m doing.” He lets out an exhale.

“Neither do I.” She gave a gentle smile. “Welcome to parenting, Lee.”

Chapter Text

It was close to dusk when Lee walked into his aunt’s house. He could hear Liam laughing and the sound of toddler footsteps padding through the house. He couldn’t help the smile that automatically formed on his face. He heard Y/N giggling in the background of the child’s laughter and his smile grew. He couldn’t help it, he had no control over it.

He walked into the living room and saw Liam spinning around with a stuffer dragon dressed in Ninja Turtle pajamas, hair damp. “What’s going on here?!” Lee said loudly.

“Lee!” Liam ran up to Lee, wrapping his arms around his waist.

Lee picked the boy up with one arm. “Hey, buddy! You hungry? I bought you a burger and some fries.” Liam nods as Lee sits him at the table, looking over at Y/N. “I got you a burger, too.” He gestured to the table with his head. “Come eat.”

She followed him to the kitchen table and sat, fixing Liam’s food in front of him. “How’d it go with your mom?”

“It was okay.” Lee sat down on the opposite side of Liam. “The same old, where have you been? Are you okay?”

“She worries about you, Lee. It’s a mother thing.” She smirks at him.

“She asked about you.” Lee looked over at her. “Kayla spilled the beans.”

“Figured she would.” She chuckled softly.

“She didn’t tell her about Liam, though. Kept that part to herself.” Lee passed her a soda. “She asked how you were and where you’ve been. She said next time to come around. She’d love to catch up.”

“Next time.” She said, looking at him. “We can- we can set up another trip down here, introduce your mom to Liam.”

Lee stopped what he was doing and looked at her. “Really?”

“I mean, if you’re serious about sticking around.” She told him, taking a bite out of her burger.

“I am.” Lee swallowed thickly.

“We’ll get settled then we can plan something.”

“Or-” Lee spoke up, his food sitting in front of him untouched. “We can maybe stick around.” He looked down then found her eyes again. “Closer to my mom and Kayla.” He picked at the edge of the ugly floral tablecloth. “I’m sure when we get jobs she’d love to babysit.”

Y/N gave a soft nod. “We can stay for a few days. Talk about it.”

“Sounds good.” He tried to hide the smile on his face.

After eating they settled in the living room and watched television. Some random cartoon that had Liam glued to the TV. Then after that Lee had Liam yelling at the TV for a wrestling match, which made her laugh. Seeing them mimic the moves as they rolled around the living room floor. Lee is being very dramatic as Liam pretends to hit him.

As the night goes by Liam brushes his teeth and climbs into the twin bed in one of the rooms upstairs. The bedroom Lee used to sleep in when he stayed here as a child. Y/N sits with Liam and hums softly to him till he is fast asleep with the little stuffed dragon.

She closes the door and makes her way down the stairs, pausing at the living room, seeing Lee looking through a box of old magazines. He looks up, hearing the floor squeak. “Liam asleep?”

“Yeah. Didn’t take him long.” She walked in and sat next to him on the couch. “What are you looking at?” Taking a magazine from his hands. “Better Homes and Gardens.”

“Yeah,” He chuckled. “My aunt was really big on this kind of shit.”

She placed the magazine down and looked at him. “So, about this idea of staying.”

“I mean, it’s just a thought.” Lee clears his throat. “Better than going somewhere where we know no one. At least this way we have a connection to the place. Won’t be suspicious, you know?”

“Is it far enough?”

“I think so. And it wn;t look so random of a move if someone does find you. You simply moved with your baby’s father.”

“Yeah. There's that. Except he has no idea.”

“We could tell him.” Lee offers with raised brows.

“I don’t know.” Tucking her hair behind her ear. “I don’t think we’re there, yet, Lee.”

“I understand.” He gives an understanding nod. “How do you feel about staying around here?” He looks over at her. “Or maybe a town over? I can get a job in construction. Plenty of places for that around here. There’s a library down the way you try at or a diner. Got plenty of them around here, too.”

“Where would we stay?”

“We can find a little apartment around somewhere. Or-” He looked around. “Here. My mom has already offered me to stay here already. More than once.”

She watched him go on and on about staying and different jobs, working, places to live. All of these ideas just came pouring out of him. “You’re really serious, aren’t you?” She studied his eyes. “About staying. Sticking around and doing this together.”

“I am, Y/N.” He nods. “Liam is my second chance to make shit right. Do things differently than my dad did with me.”

“I guess we can see what happens.”

“Really?!” His smile grows bigger and bigger.

“Yeah, really.”

“Thank you!” He breathes out and without thinking he presses his lips to hers in excitement. It’s firm but tender. He pulls away and freezes, unsure if she is about to snap at him or not. “I’m sorry!” He tells her quickly. “I just got-”

“It’s okay.” She laughs. “Not like we haven’t kissed before.”

Lee pulls his lower lip between his teeth. “I know. I just didn’t want to seem. . .pushy.”

“I- I want to give you another chance, Lee.” She takes his hand into hers. “It’s just still too much right now.” She takes an exhausted breath. “It’s just, with everything going on right now, it’s too much to deal with.”

“I know.” He places his hand on her cheek. “I know. It’s okay.”

“But when I look at you with him, like tonight-”

“Makes you wonder what it would have been like.”

“Yeah,” She wipes away a tear. “Exactly.”

“I wonder that a lot, too” His thumb gently strokes her cheek. “I’m trying to fix it.” She leans her forehead on his. “I’m trying to do better. I swear.”

“I swear, Lee,” She breathes out, her breath ghosting over his lips. “Don’t do this to me again.”

“I won’t.” His thumb slides over her lower lip. “I promise.”

As he leans into her mouth a blood curdling scream rips through the air, causing them to jump apart. A shriek pierces through the house again as they both jump up and run upstairs to the room that held Liam.

Chapter Text

Y/N and Lee swung the bedroom door open to find little Liam lying on the bed curled in a ball, holding his belly. Y/N rushed to his side, pulling him in her arms.

“Baby, what’s wrong?!”

“It hurts!” The boy cried with tears falling from his eyes. He looked up and his eyes landed on Lee. “Lee, make it go away, please!”

Lee reached, taking the child from his mother’s arms. “Come on.” He pulled him up and held him close, walking out of the room.

“Where are you going?!” Y/N jumped up, following. “Where are you going?!”

“He needs to feed. Now.” Lee tells her as he hurries down the stairs.

“What?! Again?!” Her voice is panicked and drenched in concern. “Stop!” She tries as Lee hurries through the house, rustling for his keys, Liam crying in his arms. “Lee!” She grabs his arm stopping him.

He grabs his keys and looks at her. “Y/N, do you trust me?” He asks calmly.

“I- I-” She searched his eyes as he stood there, cradling her son. Their son. “Yes!”

He said nothing. He just turned and walked out. The sound of the screen door slamming shut seemed to echo through the house.

Eight hours. They stayed gone for eight hours. Y/N was going crazy by the time Lee pulled up in the pick up truck. It was seven in the morning and Liam ran into the house with a sling shot in his hands.

“Mommy!” Liam ran into her arms. “Look what Lee got me!” She grabbed the boy and hugged him tightly. “Mommy, too tight!”

“I’m sorry baby.” She said, holding back the tears. “That’s a cool toy!” She brushed his curls from his face. “How’s your tummy?”

“Better!” He yawned. “Can I watch cartoons?”

“Sure, baby.” She told him as she looked towards Lee. Liam ran into the house as she stood. “What happened!? I’ve been worried sick!”

“It happens sometimes. Sudden need to feed.” Lee explains as they walk into the kitchen. He walks to the coffee maker, touching the glass pot feeling if it was still hot. Of course it was. She no doubt stayed up all night. “I drove a couple hours out of the way.” He poured the steaming liquid into a cup. “I took care of it.” He took a long sip. “I’m sorry it took so long.” He placed his cup down , looking at her, expecting yelling. “I know you must have been worried sick and I’m sorry. I didn’t exactly have a way to get in contact with you. Couple hours there, time to hunt, feed.” He ran a tired hand over his face. “We cleaned off swimming in a lake. Few hours back here.”

“Where did the slingshot come in?” She asked, to his surprise.

“It- it came with the meal.” Lee said sheepishly.

“Please tell me you didn’t-”

“It wasn’t. It was an adult.” Lee assured her.

“Oh- okay.” He saw her shoulder untense. “So, he’ll be okay now?”

Lee nodded. “For now.”

She nodded, walking over to the counter, grabbing her cup of coffee and refilling it. “Are you okay?” She asked not, looking at Lee.

“Are you?” Lee returned the question. He saw her nod but she wouldn’t face him. “Y/N?” He stepped towards her and he saw her quickly wipe a stray tear from her cheek as she began to walk away. “Hey,” Lee wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. “Come here.” She buried her face into his chest. “It’s okay.” He cooed as she began to cry. “I know. It's scary.” He rested his cheek on top of her head. “You were terrified and this whole thing is-”

“Thank you.” She said into his chest.

“What?” Lee looked down at her. She kept her face buried in his chest. “For what?”

“Taking care of him.” Finally she backed away, wiping her face. “For being here.”

“No, baby.” He placed his hands on her face. “It’s my job. He’s my son. Don’t thank me for doing what I should be.”

“Does- des what happened last night happen a lot?”

“No.” He brushed her hair from her face. “It’s just because it's so new to him. He’ll adjust.” He places his index finger beneath her chin. “It’ll get better.” She nodded as he leaned in and pressed a chaste kiss to her lips.

Liam took a late morning nap, falling asleep with Lee in the armchair watching The Flintstones. After about an hour Lee woke up and carefully placed Liam on the couch. He made his way through the house and found Y/N out back hanging clothes on the line.

“How was your nap?” She asked as she unpinned the t-shirt.

“Good.” He reached, pulling a pair of jeans from the line. “Liam is still asleep.”

“Good.” SHe smiled at him. “He is grumpy when tired.”

“I’ve noticed.” Lee returned the smirk. “I could have washed my own clothes.”

“I don’t mind.” She told him as she folded another shirt and dropped it into the basket. “I got the blood stains out of your shirt.”

He chuckled. “Thanks.”

“Word of advice.” She shook out another shirt and placed it in the basket. “Don’t wear white when you. . . go out to eat.”

“Noted.” He chuckled. He cleared his throat. “So, I’m gonna go to the slaughter house on the edge of town. See if I can’t get back on. I worked there in high school.”

“I remember.” She looked up at him. “You used to always smell like hay.” She smiled. “That something you want to do?” He nodded, taking Liam’s footie pajamas off of the line. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah.”

“No, I mean,” She looked up at Lee. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Are you asking if I’m sure I want my family?”

“I guess.” She takes a breath. “Yeah, that’s what I’m asking.”

Lee drops the clothes into the basket and takes the clothes out of her hands. He steps closer, placing his hands on her face, not stopping till their lips are pressed together.

“I haven’t been this sure about anything in a really long time.”

“You say that, Lee, but-”

“I’ll show you.” His thumbs caress her cheeks. “I promise I’ll show you how much I want it.”

She knew that smell from anywhere. Fresh soap and sandalwood. A light scent of Irish Spring that he has been using since he was a kid. She blinked her eyes open and saw the disheveled curls spread over the pillow next to her. Her eyes followed the milky, smooth skin of his bare back as his spine dipped into the curve of his back right before his ass. She smiled into her pillow.

“I can feel you staring at me, woman.” Said the deep voice muffled by the pillow.

“I’m not staring.”

He turned his head, looking over at her. “Then what are you doing?”

“Admiring.”

Lee smiled and rolled over onto his back. “Admiring, huh?” He placed an arm behind his head. “Well, I can feel you admiring.” He smirked. “How’d you sleep?”

“Pretty good.”

“Even though you kept getting up to check on Liam?”

“I couldn’t help it. This big house is new to us. I’m used to a little apartment with him right next door. He is all the way down the hall now.”

“It’s only been a few weeks, baby. Give yourself time to adjust.” He reached a hand to hers.

“We need to figure out how we are going to do this with Liam being home and both of us looking to work. He can’t exactly go to daycare.”

“Well, Since it's a family home we don't have to worry about rent. Just utilities. I can keep us afloat for now. With my job at the slaughterhouse.”

“Lee-”

“Mommy!” The door flew open and Liam charged at the two of them. “Lee!”  Liam landed on Lee's stomach.

“Oh God!” Lee doubled over. “Those were my nuts!” He grunted and she couldn’t help the laugh that escaped her.

“Sorry!” Liam shouted, lying next to Lee. “He Lee,” Liam crawled on top of Lee and grabbed his face with his little hands. “You have the same color eyes as me!”

“I know I do.” Lee smiled up at him.

“And you have speckles, too!”

“Freckles, not speckles!” She corrected, pulling the boy from his position on Lee. “Come on! Let’s get you some breakfast.”

“Cheerios!” Lee heard Liam shout from down the hall and he couldn't help but laugh.

By the time Lee made it down the stairs the coffee maker was making the gurgling noise that lets you know it's just about done. He poured himself a cup and leaned against the counter as he watched Liam coloring, his Cheerios long gone. Y/N grabbed the bowl as she passed by him, pressing a kiss to the top of his dark curls on the way to the sink. She looked back at Lee who was looking at her with a dreamy look on his face.

“What?” She asked, placing the bowl in the drain board after washing it, then wiping her hands on the towel.

Lee shook his head slowly. “Nothing.” He smiled, sipping his coffee. “Admiring.”

“Smart ass.” She mumbled. ‘You better get moving or you’ll be late.” Pressing a kiss to Lee’s cheek. “I’ll get your lunch ready.”

“Lee, can we go to the park after you get home?!”

“Baby, Lee may be too tired after work.” She tells him and he pouts.

“Are you kidding?” Lee looks over to Liam. “I’m never too tired for the park!”

“You spoil him.” She points to Lee.

Lee found it quite easy to fall into the domestic lifestyle. To his surprise he rather enjoyed it. Having a bed, the same bed, everynight to sleep in. A steady job with money that kept the three of them fed and comfortable. Seeing his sister and mother regularly. The looks in town bothered him less and less. Having Y/N next to him in bed, that was something he never realized he needed. Even though they were both still unsure what they were at the moment. He loved the feeling of waking up with her body next to him. And the loudness of that little boy that he loved more than he ever thought it was possible to love someone.

Y/N worked at a local diner a few nights a week. On those nights when it was just the men at home Lee would take Liam for ice cream after dinner and then to run off his sugar at the park next to the Tastee Freeze.

Hee would sit back and watch him, thinking how things would have been different if he would have stuck around. If he wouldn’t have gotten scared and ran. Lee notices things about Liam. How he stands in the exact same way he does when he is thinking. The way he scrunches his nose when he sees something he doesn’t like, the exact same way Lee does. Or the way he snores ever so slightly when in a deep sleep. Y/N says he gets that from him. The way he shakes his leg and the way he taps his fingers in concentration. They way he is staring very intently at the other child on the playground.

Lee is quick to notice how focused Liam suddenly is with the little boy on the money bars. Liam had followed him from the slide to the sandbox. He watches the toddler’s eyes zero in on the little blond headed boy's neck.

Without hesitation Lee stands from the bench, making his way across the pool of kids to Liam. Just as Liam leans in closer to the other boy Lee swoops him up. “Hey, buddy!” He holds him close, giving a pat on his back. “I think it’s time we get going. It’s getting late.”

“That boy smelled good.” Liam mumbled, looking back at the boy over Lee’s shoulder.

“I know, buddy.” Lee walked him to the truck. “I know he did.” Lee buckles him into his seat. “We need to have a talk, bud.” He tells him as he climbs into the cab of the truck.

“Did I do something bad?” Liam looks up at Lee with the same puppy dog eyes he knows he gets from him.

“No.” He pats the boy's leg. “No, buddy, you didn’t.” He takes a breath. “But you came close.”

“I wanted to bite him.” Liam looked down, ashamed.

“I know.” He takes the boy's hand. “But you have to be strong. You will have times when they smell so good and you want to, but you can’t.” He glances over at him. “Do you understand?” Liam nods, staring at the floor. “If you bite then people will freak out. They don’t understand. Then we will have to move. We’ll get in trouble. Everyone will know our secret.”

“I’ll try to not bite.” He leans his head on Lee’s arm. “I promise.”

“Another thing is you can’t just bite people. Good people. Only bad people.”

“Bad people?” Liam tilted his little head and looked over at Lee.

“Yes.” Lee cleared his throat. “See when I bite someone I make sure they don’t have a family first. Make sure no one will really notice if they go away. Then I see if they are mean. If they hurt people.”

“Only then can we bite them?”

“Yes!” Lee says, happy that he is explaining it in a way Liam is understanding. “But you can’t bite first. Not till you’re older. For now only let me do the first bite. I’ll teach you so when you are older you will know. It’ll be our special way of hunting.”

“Hunting.” Liam repeated.

“Yeah, we’ll call it hunting so no one other than you, me and mommy know what we really mean.”

“Okay!” Liam agreed. “So can we go hunting?”

“Now?” Lee looked over at him.

“Uh huh.” Liam nodded enthusiastically.

“Tell you what,” Lee told him as he turned into the drive. “If you can wait till the weekend, you, mommy and me can go camping. We’ll hunt then.”

“Okay!” Liam said excitedly as he jumped from his seat after Lee unbuckled him.

When Y/N walked into the house later that night to her surprise there was no Lee sitting on the couch with a mindless wrestling match playing on the TV. No Liam running around like an overly sugared bandit.

She called once or twice and heard nothing. Going up the stairs she peeped into Liam's room and saw the toddler fast asleep in his bed, Lee sitting on the floor next to the bed. “Lee?” Y/N walked into the room. “Everything okay?”

“Hey,” He turned, looking at her as she sat next to Lee on the floor. “I didn’t hear you get in.”

“What are you doing in here?”

Lee slowly shook his head. “Just watching him sleep.”

“I do that sometimes.” She tells him, leaning her chin on his arm. “Kind of surreal. Knowing you took part in making a whole other person.”

“Yeah,” He chuckled.

She watches his eyes as they go over her son then back again. “Lee,” She swallows. “Are you having second thoughts about this whole thing? Because if you are-”

“No! No,” He smiles. “Nothing like that.” He takes her hand and presses a kiss to the back of it. “Just realizing how lucky I am.” He stands and walks out the room.

“What?” She says, standing following Lee, pausing to gently shut the door. “Hold up.” She grabs his arm. “Lee,” She softly caresses his face. “Hey, what’s going on?”

“I’m just realizing how lucky I am. To have you and him. Being what I am-”

“Stop,” She tells him, stepping closer to him. “Lee, you aren’t-”

“I’m gonna make sure I never do to him what my dad did to me.” He looks dead into her eyes. “I’ll do better. I’ll give him better.”

“I know.” She pulls him close. “I know you will.”

Lee wraps his arms around her and buries his face in the crook of her neck, holding her close. He breathes deeply, the hair on the back of his neck standing on end. “You smell good.”

She woke up with the sun, turning over in the queen bed to yet another empty spot next to her. She sat up looking around the room. The bed next to her was cold, making her wonder if he even came to bed last night. Like most nights this past week Lee has been staying on the couch in the living room. She had no idea why but didn’t pry either.

After dressing and making the bed Y/N went downstairs to find Lee asleep on the couch in the living room. Just as she thought she would. She went to the kitchen and made a pot of coffee before going into the living room to wake Lee. To her surprise he was already awake, sitting up on the couch.

“Hey.” She said, leaning against the door frame.

“Hey.”

“So, what’s with you sleeping down here lately?” She asks, staying across the room.

Lee ran a hand over his face. “Just thought it would be better for now.”

“How come?”

“Just cause.” He stood, folding his blanket.

You gave a nod as he continued to put away his sleeping stuff. “You still want to take Liam camping this weekend?”

“Yeah. I figured we can leave tonight. When I get off of work.”

“I’ll pack today while you’re gone.” She tells him, watching him closely.

“Okay.” Was all he said, still not looking at her.

He felt hands gently touching his bare arms and he stopped. “Please talk to me.” She whispered, resting her chin on his shoulder. “Don’t close yourself off like you did.”

He turned, facing her. “That’s not what this is.” He told her quickly, taking her face into his hands. “I’m not trying to do that again. I promise.” He looked deep into her eyes. “There are some things I just want to keep you from.”

“Lee-”

“I know you want to know all of it but I don’t want you to.” He stroked her face with his thumb. “Please understand that.” She gave a nod and he kissed her forehead. “Thank you.”

She packed all of their bags and gear while Lee was at work, Liam jumping all around the house excited to go camping. She laughed as he rolled up his little sleeping bag and placed it on the pile.

When Lee got home they loaded up the old pick up and headed out. Liam was a bouncing mess like he hadn’t been camping dozens of times in the last few months. They drove a few hours out of the way in the opposite direction that Lee last took Liam to “hunt”. Lee was quieter than normal. He didn’t really say must to Y/N or even look at her.

That didn’t stop her from noticing him, though. The way he seemed like he had a constant lump in his throat. How he couldn’t take a deep breath. His fingers twitched as he gripped the steering wheel. His eyes didn’t focus fully.

They pulled into an old forgotten campsite on the outskirt of a small town. The outer grass and trees were overgrown. The fire pit was last used way too long ago. Dark black soot was spread across the area. The lake way off in the distance left a bit of leeway from the mosquitos. No one was around. Not another camper for a while. Secluded.

Lee sets up the tent as you make sandwiches while Liam chases fireflies. Le made smores with Liam as you watched them talk about the day and Liam told Lee about the puppy he saw at the park.

After a while Lee got him asleep. After two stories and a song. Lee shook his head as he walked out of the tent he saw you sitting next to the fire, covered in a blanket. She looked back and saw him. Holding out an arm she offered Lee the spot next to her beneath the blanket. He sat down and she placed the blanket over his shoulder before wrapping her hands around her mug.

“I’m sorry I’ve been so weird.” He tells her.

“I trust that if it was something serious, you’d tell me.” She placed her mug to the side. “I just want to know if you are okay.”

Lee nods. “I’m okay.” He pushes her hair behind her ear. “It’s just an. . .eater thing.” She nods as her eyes drift to the ground covered in leaves. “Hey,” He places his hand on her cheek. She looks up at him. “I’m okay.” She nods, leaning her head on his shoulder.

Lee leans his face into her hair and breathes deep. She looks up at him, his eyes are shut as he breathes deeply. Leaning closer she presses her lips to him. He melts into her, his hands gripping her body. The kiss grows deep, Lee tasting her like a starving animal. She feels his lips on her neck trailing kisses down to her shoulder, pulling her shirt away as he goes.

He stops at her pulse point, her racing heart causing her blood to rush through her veins. He drags his lips across her skin followed by the gentle feel of his teeth barely ghosting over her skin. “Lee?” She can feel him panting as he inhales her scent. She tries to back away but he holds her there. His grip on her arms is bruisingly tight.

He pulls away, not looking up at her, breathing shallow. “I‘ve gotta-” He backs away. “I- I need air. I need to-” He stands. “I’ll be back later.” He starts walking away.

“Lee, wait!” You stand and start to go after him.

He turns, holding his hands out to stop you. “Stop!” He shouts. “I just need to clear my head. I’ll be back.” His brow is furrowed and fearful as he looks at you. “I promise.” He tones soften and is more assuring. Or at least he was trying to be. “I promise. I will be back.”

Wrapping your arms around yourself you nod. “Okay.”

He turned, walking away. “Don’t wait up.”

She lay in the tent for hours, looking at the stars through the netting tent top. She looked over at the watch next to the sleeping bag. Two am. She grumbled and tossed the watch aside. He’d been going for five hours. She was starting to get worried. Braking sticks pulled her from her worrying.

Crawling out of the tent she zipped it behind herself. She heard the branches and leaves crushing again. “Lee?” She calls gently. She walks to the edge of the trees and calls again. “Lee?!” She jumps when a rabbit hops across the grass out of the tree line. She gives a chuckle to herself as she realizes it is an animal.

A laugh catches her attention in the distance. She looks back at the tent, Liam asleep safely. She looks around making sure no one is around to worry about. After she is satisfied he is safe she follows the sound of broken laugher and rustling. After walking into the woods she see a flashlight in the distance. She stops as the light gets closer. They obviously have no clue she is there because they are moving closer to her. She remains still as she realizes they are Lee. Lee and some girl she’d never seen before, in a skimpy two piece. They are sitting on a downed tree, laughing, flirting.

Her blood boils as she sees him whisper something into her ear. The girl leans close to Lee, nibbling beneath his ear. Y/N can feel her face growing hot at the sight in front of her. Lee’s arm around another woman, his lips on her skin.

She watched as Lee’s eyes popped open with the shift of the wind. His head snapped towards where Y/N was standing and for a moment she thought he saw her. Then he went back to the girl’s neck. The giggling sound from the girl made Y/N’s stomach turn.

The giggles suddenly turn to a strained gasp then a gurgled scream as Lee pulls a  bloody chunk of skin from the girl’s throat with his teeth. It happened so fast Y/N wasn’t sure what had happened at first. Then she saw Lee lowering the twitching body of this woman to the ground, the front of his body drenched and dripping with the spurting blood from the gaping wound on her neck. Y/N’s hands went to her mouth as she stifled a scream herself. Lee’s head snapped up. He laid the body down and stood, his eyes sight directly where Y/N was standing.

He inhaled deeply. “Y/N?” She let out a gasp as you backed away slowly, but the leaves crunching beneath her feet gave her away.

She turned and began running through the woods. Lee was quicker than her though. His hands were on her, grabbing her and shoving her against a tree. “Don’t!” She struggled against him. “Please!”

“I’m not gonna hurt you!” Lee shouted as if him being louder would get her to not be scared. The wind blew hard and Lee’s mouth watered.

“Please, Lee!” She cried. She turned and looked up at him, opening her eyes clearly, blinking away the tears. Or trying to at least. His eyes were dark but soft. Like he was scared himself. “Please let me go.” Her voice was almost a whisper.

“You can’t run.” He grits out.

“Please, Lee.”

He leans in close and the smell of her burns his throat. The grip on her arms was so tight she knew he was bruising her. There was a low growl that came from him and it made her tense in fear, her face turned away from him. He looked at the vein pulsing in her neck. His lips brushed against her neck as his grip lessened on her arms.

He leaned in closer, his lips now beneath her ear. “Please don’t run.” He said low. She feels his head lean against hers as if in surrendered. “Please.” He brings his hand up against her cheek. “I’m not gonna hurt you. I swear.” He lifts his head, looking at her. Everywhere he touched he left blood smeared across her skin.  He leaned his forehead against hers. “Don’t be scared.” He lifted his head looking her in the eyes. “I won’t-”

“Mommy? Lee?” The sound of Liam’s voice in the distance makes you gasp.

Lee’s head snaps to the side and he sees Liam walking towards the body of the dead woman. Lee looks her in the eyes and with an unspoken understanding Lee walks away.

“Hey, buddy!” Lee speaks, his entire demeanor and voice changes into a softer tone.

“Where’s mommy?” Liam yawns.

“Mommy is okay. She just went for a walk. I got this for us.” Lee kneels next to Liam.

“Really?!” Liam smiles, rubbing his belly.

“Yeah, remember what I told you about eating?” Lee takes Liam’s shirt off and tosses it with his.

“Chew around jewelry and be careful not to choke.”

“That’s right.” He pats the little boy’s shoulder. “You start. I’ll be right back.” Lee stands.

To his surprise she was gone. Shaking his head he walks back over to Liam and takes his spot next to his son and begins eating. Across the field she is standing there with tears running down her blood stained cheeks as she watches her three year old son and his father eat the body of this woman. Everytime the wind blows, Lee’s head pops up, smelling her. He knows Y/N is close but doesn’t know where. He can’t think about that right now. He needs to fill the growing hunger that keeps at him.

When they are done Liam and Lee walk through the woods to the stream. “Mommy!” Liam shouts when he sees her sitting on a rock, washing her hands.

The toddler runs up to her, covered in blood. “Hey, baby!” She sniffles her need to cry. “Oh, look at you! Let’s get you cleaned.”

“I can-”

“I got it.” She tells Lee, grabbing the towel she brought with herself.

With resolve she washed her child clean from the blood and rinsed his clothes clean. She didn’t show fear nor sadness. Not a single tear was shed. Lee watched her as he cleaned himself in the stream. She never even looked at him.

Lee spent the day teaching Liam how to aim and shoot his new slingshot. Sure Y/N had the rule of not shooting animals, so cans and bottles had to do. By that afternoon Liam was worn out. After a dinner of ham sandwiches and chips, Liam fell asleep quickly. Of course Lee had to tuck him in.

When Lee got out of the tent he didn’t see Y/N by the fire like her expected. He walked to the truck and saw the bag sitting on the ground. Kneeling Lee opened it and saw it was fully packed. He turned, his eyes scanning the area. Panic rushed through him when he didn’t see her.

He stood running towards the woods. “Y/N!” He called the deeper he got into the brush. He found her sitting in the spot he killed the woman the night before. He'd long gotten rid of the body. All that was left was bloody leaves and damp blood soaked dirt and sticks. “Y/N?”

When she turned to him he could see the tears running down her cheeks. She stood and turned to him. “What are you doing out here?”

“I was-” He gestured back and turned to her again. “I saw your bag.” He walked closer. He studied her face for a minute before his shoulders fell. “You’re skipping out. Aren’t you?”

She shook her head crying harder. “ I was going to.” She wiped at her face. “But I can’t. I can’t leave him.” Lee wanted nothing more than to hold her and comfort her but knew he couldn’t get any closer. That familiar burning was at the back of his throat. “I’m scared Lee, I don’t know if I can do this.”

He walked closer. “That’s why I never wanted you to see this part of it.” He tells her. “It’s too much for people who don’t have to do it.”

“You killed that poor girl last night, Lee.”

“He wasn;t as innocent as she looked.” He spat. “Knowing I was in a relationship only made her want to fuck me more. She was a slut.”

“It didn’t matter!”

“You can’t look at it like that!” Lee tells her. “You can’t look at them as people! She was a whore who went after taken men. Or wife beaters and abusive assholes! They aren't people. They are a waste of space! The world is better off without!”

“How can you look at it that way?”

“Because I have to in order to survive.” He growled. His body was boiling hot as his heart hammered in his chest.

“Lee,” SHe noticed his eyes were dark and unfocused. He was sweaty and could barely stand. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing.” He leaned back against a tree. He shut his eyes, taking a breath but all he did was fill himself with her scent. When he reopened  his eyes she was closer. “Fuck.” He murmured to himself.

He leaned forward, bracing his hands on his knees. She ran to him, kneeling in front of him, placing her hands on his face. “Lee? Lee, look at me.”

“Don’t,” He mumbled, trying to move away from her.

“Lee, what’s happening?” Lee hits his knees as she holds his face in her hands. “COme on.” She tries to help him up.

The feeling was sharp. Like lightning through her skin. Le’s teeth pierced through her flesh as easily as a knife slicing through butter. She screamed, his hand coming down over her mouth. He unclenched his jaw just to move his mouth to a new spot and bite down again. The feeling of his teeth breaking through her soft skin the, taste of her blood on his tongue made the feeling in him subside instantly. The burning in the back of his throat was finally quenched.

When his teeth sank in for the third time the ringing in his ears finally calmed and that was when he heard the muffled screaming from beneath him.

Lee released her, her body falling to the ground. She scurried away holding pressure against her shoulder, crying from the pain.

“Oh God!” Lee stood, standing over her with terror in his eyes. “No, no, no-” He moved towards her and she backed away frantically.

Lee froze, looking down at her. She was terrified of him. The one thing he never wanted to do, he did. She was shaking, covered in blood on the ground in the woods, crying hysterically. Lee did the only thing he could think to do.

He ran.

Chapter Text

Weeks turned to months with no sign of Lee. He disappeared from existence. They'd left the campsite without Lee, unable to stay any longer than the following night. She’d had work to worry about. After all, Liam needed to eat.

She would watch Liam in bed at night, trying to understand how her sweet baby boy could also be this flesh-eating thing. The same way the man she loved could be this murderous monster.

She cried herself to sleep most nights. She wished she could pick up and leave like Lee. Maybe then she could know a sense of peace. That night at the campsite she’d packed a bag and was going to leave. Just disappear like Lee always did. Liam needed to be with someone who understood him in that way. Who better than his father, the one whom he got this. . . disease from.

But she couldn’t. Even with her bag packed and a clear getaway she couldn't leave. She couldn’t leave her son, her baby boy behind. She was his mother, how could she even think of doing that? She felt like a hypocrite for even thinking about it.

Wiping her eyes, she picked herself up off the floor of her son’s bedroom and walked downstairs. Thankfully Lee’s mother never said anything about her and Liam living there while Lee was gone. Yet. She picked up extra shifts at the diner to cover Lee not being there to help with the bills.  Against her better judgment, she hired a sitter, praying not to have another repeat. Her only bit of security was knowing that Lee taught him things in the few months he was around.

Walking down stairs, she went into the kitchen for a cup of tea. She froze seeing Lee at the screen door, sliding an envelope into the crack. He froze just the same, looking at her. He looked slimmer, if that was possible. His eyes had dark circles beneath. His hair was a mess and the bright red faded. His clothes were dingy and dirty.

He shoved the envelope into the crack, picking his bag up from the ground. “I’m leaving. I was just leaving this.” He quickly turned and walked away.

“Lee?” Her voice was barely audible. “Lee, wait.”

He stopped and turned back around. She went to the screen door and opened it. “I don’t want to upset you or anything.”

“Where have you been?” She breathed out.

“Around.” He shrugged. “Mostly in Kentucky.”

“Where are you going now?”

“Not sure.” He adjusts his backpack on his shoulder. “Is Liam-”

“He misses you.” She watched his face sink.

“I miss him, too.”

She moves, holding the door open. “Come on.” She nudges her head for him to come into the house.

“I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea.” He shook his head. “Not after last time.”

“No shit.” She tells him bluntly. “Keep your distance.” She pushes off the door frame.

Lee walks in and sets his bag at the door. “Is Liam doing okay?”

“Yeah. I had to hire a sitter.”

“Yeah, she looks like a hard ass.” Lee scratched his chin. “I saw her leaving.”

“How long have you been in town?”

“Just today.” He held up the envelope. “I was just going to drop this and head out.” He places it on the table and steps back.

She walks to the table, picking up the envelope. It's a small stack of money. “What’s this?”

“To help pay bills. Or whatever you guys need.”

She huffs, tossing it on the table. “So what? You just gonna skip again? Liam still needs you, you know? I don’t know what to do here. I can’t-” She pauses. “You said you’d be there for him,” She said, taking a breath.

“After what happened I didn’t think-”

“This isn’t about me. Or you. It’s about him and what he needs.” She ran her hands through her hair in frustration. “God, You are so fucking selfish, Lee!”

“I’m sorry! I got scared!” He pulls his hands from his pockets. “I couldn’t face what I did!”

“So you ran away! Just like you always do!”

“What was I supposed to do?!”

“Mommy?” The little voice from the stairs made her and Lee look at the little boy. He rubbed his eyes and looked at Lee. A big smile spread across his face. “Lee!” He ran to him and jumped into his arms.

“Hey, buddy!” Lee knelt, scooping up the boy. He held him tightly and she saw tears start to fall from Lee’s eyes as he held the boy tightly. He pulled away and looked over him. ‘Look at you! You grew!” He ruffles the boy’s hair.

“I did?” Liam smiled at Lee. “Where did you go?”

“Remember how I told you I’d have to leave sometimes?”

“Yeah.” Liam nods. “But you’re back again. So you’re staying?”

Lee nodded with a tight lipped smile “Yeah. bud. I’m staying.” He stands, taking Liam’s hand. “Let’s get you back to bed.”

Lee tuck Liam back into bed and sits with him til he is asleep. Lee sits there after he falls asleep and watches him sleep. The ache in his heart from being away from his son is a new feeling for him. He was overwhelmed by the loneliness for Liam he suddenly felt. Taking a breath he stood walking out of the bedroom. When he reached the bottom of the stairs in the kitchen she was sitting at the table, a cup of tea in front of her. He stands at the opposite end of the table, looking at her, but she never looks back up to him.

She stands, grabs his bag and holds it out to him. Lee swallows as he walks to her, taking the bag from her hand. “Go shower. Clean yourself up.” When he takes the bag she drops her arm and starts walking to the stairs. “You know where the couch is.”

Lee didn’t argue. He took his bag and made his way up the stairs and to the bathroom. He smelled the soap and shampoo, letting the scent of her fill him. He’d missed her so much in the past two months. But the hatred he had in him is what kept him away. He hated himself for hurting her. He couldn’t even look at himself in the mirror. He hadn't since he attacked her. How she managed to be in the same house as him was beyond him.

He finished his shower, brushed his teeth and made his way down to the couch. When he laid down he fell asleep almost instantly.

Y/N woke up the next morning and heard Liam and Lee playing down stairs. She immediately had a lump in her throat. Climbing out of bed she slid her robe on and made her way down the stairs. Seeing the two watching TV in the living room she made her way to the kitchen and fixed herself a cup of coffee. When she turned around Lee was standing behind her. She gasped, dropping her mug filled with coffee to the ground.

“It’s just me!” He said, holding up his hands. “I’m- I’m sorry.” He knelt down, picking up the pieces of the mug. She grabbed the towel from the counter and knelt down soaking up the liquid. “Are you okay?”

She nodded, not looking up at him, still. “Give me that.” She took the broken glass from Lee. “I’ll throw it out.” She stood walking to the trash, dropping the bits of the mug in.

“Y/N-”

“I’m fine, Lee.” She said bluntly.

“Then why won’t you look at me?” He stood from the floor. “Can you let me explain?”

“There’s nothing to explain.” She walked over to the sink and washed her hands off. “You were just doing what is in your nature to do.”

“Y/N-”

“I need to get ready for work.” She pushed away from the sink and went back up the stairs.

Lee followed her up the stairs. “Then tonight, when you get home. After Liam is asleep.” He stopped at the bedroom door. “Please.” She looked back at him standing there. His brow furrowed and his lower lip in a pout. “I need to explain.”

She slammed the door in his face.

That evening when Y/N got back from the diner she walked into the house, surprised to see the sitter in the living room, reading a magazine.

“Patty?”

“Hey,” The sitter smiled. “Liam is in bed.” She stood going over to Y/N.

“Where’s Lee?”

“Oh, he left around 2:30. Said he had a shift.”

“Oh.” She shook her head. “Uh, okay.” Reaching into her purse.

“Oh, the guy already paid me.”

“Oh, okay, well thank you, Patty.” She told her as she left.

Y/N went up stairs and checked in on Liam, pressing a kiss to his head before shutting the door. After showering she slipped into her silk robe and went check in on Liam again. He was still sound asleep cuddling his toy. When she turned she jumped, grabbing her chest as Lee walked up the stairs.

“Jesus!”

“Sorry.” Lee held up his hands. “I- I was just- I need to shower.”

“Where did you go?”

“I- I had a shift. At the slaughterhouse.”

“You got your job back?” She crossed her arms over her chest. “That quick?”

“No, I-” Lee ran a hand over his face. “I never quit.”

“Wait.” She held out a hand. “You’ve been working at the slaughterhouse still? This whole time?”

“Yeah.”

“You mean to tell me that you have been going to work twenty minutes away and you never thought to stop by and check on your son?”

“I did check on him.” Lee walked past her to the bathroom. “I checked on him and you every day.” He told her before shutting the door.

Lee turned the shower on till it was steaming before he walked under the shower head washing off the smell of hay and animals. He stood under the spout for the longest time trying to clear his head. Trying to calm the thoughts in his mind. When it didn’t work he gave up and got out of the shower.

After dressing he walked into the bedroom and saw Y/N sitting on the bed with annoyance. He sat on the foot of the bed and looked at her.  “I know you’re mad.”

“Did you do like you did last time?” She sat up. “Did you keep your distance and watch us for two months?” Lee nodded. “You are un fucking believable!” She stood walking across the room. “After I told you how much it killed me last time! You went and did it again!”

“I wasn’t gonna stay gone.” He told her looking up from the bed. “I was gonna come back.”

“Yeah, I’m so sure.”

“I had to wait-”

“Wait for what?! For Liam to kill someone else?!”

“For you to not hate me!” He finally stood. “I wanted you to be okay first! I did something so fucked up that I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. And if I couldn’t, I know you sure as hell was still fucked up about it!”

“I’m not okay!” She shouted back. “I am scared to death of you, Lee!”

“I know!” He walks closer. “Don’t you think I know that! Don’t you think that kills me?!” She holds up her hands, backing away the closer he gets. His shoulders fall seeing the fear in her. “I’m- I’m not gonna do anything to you.” He tells her calmly. Her back is against the wall, his eyes going to the bite marks he left on her shoulder. Her robe fell just off her shoulder leaving a perfect view of the scars he left her. He brushed his fingertips across the rough skin of the scars. “I’m so sorry.” The tears suddenly fell from Lee’s eyes. He quickly wiped his eyes, turning away. “Look,” He sniffled. “I didn’t mean to bite you.” He looks back and sees her still listening. “I tried so hard not to. But the feeling I had- I needed you. I needed to taste you. . . like that. I didn’t want to eat you. I just need to have you in me.” He shook his head, sitting on the edge of the bed. “It was a burning feeling in me every time I was near you and I didn’t do it. It was making me weak and driving me crazy. It was physically hurting me not- to not-” He wiped the tears that kept falling. “As soon as I bit it all stopped.” He looked up at her with fresh tears falling. “All the pain and the burning in my throat, the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, it was gone. The ringing in my ears was so loud.” He looked back down at his hands. “Then I heard it. I heard you screaming. I didn’t even remember covering your mouth. You were there, and I- I’m so fucking sorry.”

She took a step closer to him. “Do you still have that feeling in you?”

“No.” He sniffed. “But, I don’t know if it will happen again.” She slowly walked over and sat on the bed next to him. “When I was away from you it would stop. If it starts again, I’ll leave.”

“Why did it happen?”

“I heard stories over the years about when one of us finds their one, it’s like you need to connect with them. Like marking your soul mate in old fables.” He looks over to her. “I never believed it till now.” He reaches his hand, touching the marks on her shoulder. “I’d disappear and live with the pain for the rest of my life before causing you that fear again.” He looks into her eyes. “I never want to be the cause of that in you ever again.”

She carefully wraps her arms around Lee and pulls him into a hug. He buries his face into her neck and sobs, wrapping his arms around her. “Shh, I got you.” She whispers to him. “I’m still here.”

“I love you so much.” Lee whispers.

“I love you, too.” She whispers.

“I’m sorry.” He whispers. “I’m so sorry.”

He says it over and over again as he sobs in her arms and his body is shaking. She could feel the desperation, fear and guilt in him as she held him close.

She woke the following morning before Liam, believe it or not. The sun was barely over the trees as she blinked her eyes open. Turning over she was met by the warmth of Lee. He was lying there in a deep sleep, his eyes moving quickly beneath his eyelids. His eyes were still red rimmed from crying so much the night before. His slim body curled in around itself as he breathed out heavily.

Reaching up she pushed his faded red curls from his face. The long curls were growing out from his last run in with the clippers. She liked his curls long, but she never admitted that to him.

She pressed a kiss to his forehead before climbing out of the bed and heading to the kitchen. She was halfway through her second cup when the lean frame of Lee came from the stairs. Scratching his head with a yawn Lee walked over to the counter, grabbing a mug from the cabinet. He poured the steaming liquid into the cup and leaned against the counter.

He watched her as she looked through the paper in front of her on the table. “How’d you sleep?” He asks finally, his hands gripping the mug.

She looked over her shoulder at him. “Fine. What about you?”

“Okay.” He walked over to the table and sat across from her. “About last night,” She looked up at him and she saw his eyes fill with fear. “I- I know-”

“Lee, It’s okay. I mean, it’s not okay but,” She exhales and shakes her head. “Look, I love you, Lee. I don’t think I ever stopped.” She reached, taking his hand. “But you scared me. Do you understand that? You need to give me time to be okay with what you did to me.” She wiped a stray tear from her eye. “I know you love me and I know you didn’t mean it that way but you still scared me. You still did it. There is so much about this that I don’t understand and that’s on you leaving. You never gave me to chance to-”

“I know and I’m sorry.” He tells her, wrapping his other hand around hers. “I know I sound like a broken record but I am. Just tell me what I need to do.”

“Just being here is a start.” She tells him with tears in her eyes once more. “After that, I don’t know.”

“I understand. I just-” He looks down at her hand between. His brow is furrowed together in thought.

“What?” She asked, seeing him nibble his lower lip in worry. “What is it, Lee, talk to me.”

“I know I fucked up. I royally fuck up-” He blinks trying to keep his tears from falling. Looking up the tears fall anyway. “I really don’t want to lose you and Liam. I’m terrified that I am. Slowly I’m-”

“Stop running.” She tells him sternly. “Act like you don’t want to lose us. Stop running every time you get scared. Show you want this as much as you say you do. Be here, Lee.” She can feel the heat in her face and the warm tears falling down her cheeks. “Even though it’s hard, stay. Work through this with us. Don’t leave us behind because you think it’s better. You are what’s best for us. You being here.”

Lee stands and walks over to her and kneels in front of her. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere else. I swear.” He places his hands on either side of her face. “I’m here to stay.”

“I can’t do this without you, Lee.” She sobs as she buries her face in his shoulder, her arms wrapped tight around him.

“I’m here. I swear. I’m here.” He tells her over and over again. “I only left this time to give you time. I knew I’d fucked up and I knew it wasn’t something I could just apologize for.”

“I know, but I need you to stay anyway.” She pulls away, looking at him. His own tears running down his face. “I need you to be here this time. That’s the only way this will work.”

He nods his head as more tears fall. She wraps her arms around him, kissing his head. She tried to fight how she knew she felt. Tried to make herself believe that how she felt was because he was the father of her child. Because Liam needed him. But the reality was that she loved Lee. She never stopped loving Lee. And she needed him there.

“Is Lee leaving again?” The small voice came from the stairs.

Lee and Y/N pulled apart and looked over at the little boy standing there with a pout on his face and big tears in his eyes.

“Why would you think that, buddy?” Lee stood going over to Liam, scooping him up.

“Because you’re sad. Mommy is sad when you leave. And you’re sad.”

“Oh, no, baby.” Y/N walks over to her son. “We were just talking about things. I just missed him a lot when he was gone.”

“So, you’re not leaving?” Liam’s big green eyes go to Lee.

“Nope.” Lee hugs Liam. “ I’m not going anywhere. And even if I do have to go for a bit, I’ll always come back.”

Liam smiles and throws his arms around Lee’s neck, hugging him tightly. “How about some Cheerios?” Lee asks him with a little bounce.

Y/N watched as Lee ate breakfast with him and they laughed. She left for work a while later and felt a breath of relief knowing Lee was with Liam instead of a babysitter. She didn’t have the worry sitting in the back of her head like before. The feeling of dread when she would get him afraid to see blood stains and a missing babysitter.

Lee kept his distance the next few weeks. Knowing she needed to wrap herself around him, having done what he did and his reasons behind it. Sure, she understood and it made complete sense. But that didn’t change the fear from it all.

When Lee came up behind her she would jump. When he would appear in the dark she would gasp. He didn’t do it on purpose, but it still got to her nonetheless. He tried. He would take her hand at night while watching TV. He’d look at her from across the room with daydreaming eyes. She saw it in his eyes how he felt and it settled her heart.

“Liam is asleep.” Lee told her, walking into Y/N bedroom.

“That was quick.” She chuckled, sitting in the bed, rubbing the rest of her lotion into her hands.

“We spent most of the afternoon at the park.” He sat on the edge of the bed near her feet. “Always wears him out.” He smiled.

“You two are such a little team of craziness.” She ran her hand through his wild red curls. “Letting the hair grow?”

“You love it.” He smirked, kissing her hand.

“I do.” Her smile fades a little as she sits back against the pillows.

“What?”

“Did you- did you leave in the middle of the night last night?”

Lee looked down at her hand in his. “Yeah.”

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah, I just, I couldn’t sleep. Needed to clear my head.” He kissed the back of her hand again. “I came back, though.” He gave a tight lipped smile.

She sat up, her face even with his. “What’s going on in your head, Lee?” She runs her hand through his thick faded red curls. She notices his eyes going everywhere but her. “Lee?” She dips her head, finally catching his eyes.

“Why do you love me?”

She was taken aback by the question. She just stared at him for the longest time. His green eyes searching hers, waiting for an answer.

“I- why would you ask that?”

“I just don’t understand how you can love someone- something like me.”

She lets out a sigh. “Lee, you are a good man. Just because you have this…illness, doesn’t make you any less good.”

“I think back-”

“Don’t. Don’t think about what you did. Look at what you are doing.” She takes his face into her hands. “You are taking care of us. You are there for him and you are here for me. It’s been a heel of a few weeks but you stayed. You’re here.” She pulled his face to hers and kissed his lips gently. “You’re where you need to be.”

“Am I?”

“Do you doubt you belong with us?” She asked, dropping her hands, looking him in his eyes.

Lee shrugged his shoulders. “I know I want to be with you and Liam, but-”

“No buts, Lee. If you have any doubt that being with us is right, if you think that you can’t, that you without a doubt can not do this, then walk away.” Lee watched as tears filled her eyes. “But if you do choose to walk, stay gone.” The tears started falling from her eyes. “Because I can not handle this. I can’t-” She shakes her head wiping her tears. “I just can’t.”

Lee lifted his hand to her cheek, the fresh tears were warm as they slid down his fingers. He leans forward pressing his forehead against hers. “I don’t know how to let anyone love me.” He whispers as a tear slides down his cheek. “It scares me how much I need you.”

“Me too, Lee.” She whispers. “But I’m trusting you with my everything.”

Lee lifts his face just a little, his breath ghosting over hers. “You are my everything.”

With their eyes still shut he presses his lips gently against hers. Since he’d bitten her, her usual instinct has been to pull away from him when he is this close. This time it was the last thing she wanted to do. She leaned into his kiss. When Lee parted his lips to break the kiss she leaned into his mouth again, pressing another, more firm kiss to his lips.

He brings his hand to her cheek, pulling her even closer. Heat rushed over his body as he smelled the rose scented body wash she used. She felt his fingers gripping at her. She didn’t push him away or move from his touch. She let him slowly lay her back against the pillows. Although his movements were unsure and scared she could feel the emotion and yearning behind them. She could feel his desperation for her and the raw need to have her. It only made her own feelings and desperation for him grow.

She slipped her hands beneath his shirt, gently gliding up his back. His muscles flexed beneath her fingertips as he steadied himself on top of her. He pulled away breathlessly. “Wait- are you sure?”

“I am.” She tells him, running her fingers through the faded red curls. “I want you, Lee.”

He leans his forehead on hers. “What if-”

“No what ifs.” She leans kissing his lips. “Just now.”

WIth that Lee pressed his body to hers, melting into one another. They undress each other, feeling every inch of one another’s skin. He hadn’t touched her like this since they were teengers. The emotion of having the person you yearned for most and never could have. Lee was surprisingly overcome with emotions he wasn’t sure what to do with. So he held her as he loved her. He moved carefully making sure she felt every bit of his love, every ounce of his need for her. It wasn;t until they were both panting, shaking, sweaty messed between the sheets that they even parted an inch.

“I love you.” Lee whispered to her. “I love you so much.”

Lee woke up, he could feel the cool blankets against his naked body as he turned his head on the pillow. Blinking his eyes it was still pitch dark in the room. Y/N still asleep next to him, he looked over at the clock next to the bed. It was barely one am. He ran a hand over his face and gave a huff of annoyance. He leaned over pressing a soft kiss to her cheek and carefully slipped out of the bed.

When Y/N’s alarm went off the hours later she turned over in the bed feeling the emptiness and the cold sheets. SHe dressed and walked down stairs thinking Lee would be awake and drinking coffee. Maybe Liam woke him up early. To her surprise the house was quiet. On the coffee pot read a note.

Won’t be back for a day or two.  I left money for the sitter for work. Love you.

She furrowed her brow. Why would he leave after last night? Was he regretting what happened, what he said? Pushing it out of her mind she crumpled the paper and tossed it in the trash with annoyance.

Four days went by without a word from Lee. Liam asked for him constantly and all she could do was say he’ll be back without even knowing if it was try. The sad little face whenever he would wake up and Lee wasn’t there broke her heart.

After Liam had fallen asleep Y/N took a long shower and let the hot water relax her after a double shift. Walking down stairs she froze seeing the kitchen door that led to the backyard open. She knew she’d shut and locked it before going to shower. Walking over she looked out the screen door seeing nothing.

“Lee?” She spoke. Hearing nothing she shook her head feeling foolish, shutting the door and locking it again. As she turned she saw someone walking into the kitchen. “Jesus! She grabbed her chest.

“Whoa!” Lee held up his hands, stopping in front of her. “You okay?”

“Am I okay?!” She slapped his arms. “Where the hell have you been, you jerk!”

“Whoa, whoa!” He grabbed her hands, stopping her from hitting him. “I left a note!”

“You said a few days! Not almost a week!” Her eyes were tearing up and Lee pulled her into his arms.

“Hey, I’m sorry.”

“Where the hell did you even go?” She wrapped her arms around his waist.

“I was. . .  hunting.” He leaned his cheek on top of her head.

“You couldn’t call?” She sniffled.

“I should have. I’m sorry.” He rubbed her back. “You thought I took off again.” She nodded against his chest. “I’m never doing that again. I’ll always come back.”

She backed away, wiping her eyes. “Why’d it take you so long?”

“I drove a few states away.” Placing his hands on either side of her face, his thumbs wiping away her tears. “Wanna make sure-”

“I know.” She told him understanding.

“Hey,” He tilted her head up. “I’m back.” He pressed a gentle kiss to her lips. “I came back.”

“I hate how much I love you sometimes.” She confesses.

“I know.” He scrunches his nose. “But I love you just as much.” He kisses her head. “I’m gonna shower, then I’ll meet you in bed.”

“Okay.” She nodded. “Lock up.”

Lee wasted no time washing the dirt away from the last few days. He placed his soiled clothes to soak in the washer to get the blood stains out before going back upstairs. Crawling into bed next to her He wrapped his arms around her middle, his head next to hers on the same pillow.

“Feel better?” She asked, nuzzling his head with her nose, breathing him in deep.

“Much.”

“Mommy.” The door creaked open and both looked up seeing Liam rubbing his eyes sleepily. “Lee!” An instant smile on his face. “You're back!” Liam ran and jumped on the bed, crawling into Lee’s arms.

“Of course I'm back, buddy!” Lee hugged him tightly.

“Where were you?”

“Hunting.”

“You went hunting without me?!” Liam pouted.

“Well, I was looking at some places for us to go hunt. I found one. We can go in a week or two. How's that sound?”

“Sounds good! I'm not hungry yet but I will tell you as soon as I am!”

“Good boy!” Lee ruffled his hair. “Now come on, go back to sleep.” He told him, pulling the blankets over the toddler.

Y/N smiled watching Lee snuggle Liam. He really fell into his role with Liam so easily. Her only worry was will he stick by his word and stay.

Lee reached his hand, grasping hers. She looked over and saw a worried look on his face. She shook her head, gesturing for him to not worry as she laid her head on her pillow.

The next morning she woke up to an empty bed and laughter from downstairs. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes she yawned and made her way to the fresh coffee smell.

“Hey mommy!” She was greeted with a smiling Liam with a mouth full of cheerios.

“Morning baby.” She kissed the top of his head. “Morning handsome.” She pressed a kiss to Lee’s cheek. As she walked passed she noticed a long scratch across his neck and shoulder.

Lee noticed the look on her face and gave a small head shake as if to tell her they would discuss it later. She nodded and went on to her coffee maker. She leaned back against the counter and watched them playfully converse. The longer they were together the more it was obvious that Liam was Lee’s son.

Lee walked back to the counter and poured another cup of coffee. “I think we should tell him.” Y/N said, placing her cup down.

“What?” He pauses, his cup halfway to his mouth.

“We should tell him you’re his dad.”

Lee places his cup down. “Are you sure?”

“Why shouldn’t we?” She looks at Lee. “He looks to you as his father anyway. He looks just like you-”

“Poor kid.” He chuckles, looking down at his cup on the counter.

“Do you not want to?”

“No, it’s not that.”

“Then what is it?” She turns to him. He stands in silence for a long moment, saying nothing. Just staring at his cup. “Is it because once we tell him, you can't get up and leave?”

“No, no.” He shakes his head. “It’s not that.”

“Then what, Lee?”

“WHat if I let him down?”

“Let him down?” SHe asks unsure what he meant. “Let him down how?”

“He loves me as his friend. What if it’s different after he finds out I'm his dad?”

“Why would it be?”

“I don’t know?” He shrugs. “It’s kind of like,” He turns to her. “Kind of like how people are happy and in love then after they get married it all falls apart.”

“You think it will fall apart?”

“I’m scared it will.” He confesses. “I’m scared that what we;ve built together will come crashing down.”

“Lee-” She pulls him into her arms. “It won’t.” She rubs his back soothingly.

“Lee,” That little voice sounded. “Are you okay?’

Lee felt hands tapping his leg. “Yeah, buddy.” He turned, lifting the toddler up. “I’m fine!”

“Hey, Liam,” Y/N pushed her son’s dark curls from his forehead. “Remember when I told you that Lee was special?”

“Yeah!” She nodded enthusiastically.

“You wanna know why he is so special to mommy?”

“Why?!”

“Because Lee is really your daddy.”

“Really!?”

“Yeah!” She chuckled at his excitement. “Why do you think you have his freckles and eyes?”

“I get my speckles from you?!” Liam grabbed Lee’s face in his hands.

“Freckles, not speckles.” Lee laughed. “And yes.”

“What else do I get from you?”

“My hair. If I don’t dye and cut my hair I’d have the same dark curls as you.” Lee ruffles his hair.

“You have his laugh and his same scrunched face when you don’t like something.” You smile.

“So, can I call you daddy?”

“You can call me whatever you'd like, buddy.” Lee tells him with tears as Liam wraps his arms around Lee’s neck.

“I knew you were my daddy.” He squeezes tightly. “I just knew it.”

“You did?”

“Uh huh.” Liam lifts his head. “I just knew, in here.” He pointed to his heart.”

Lee was surprised with how excited Liam was to know the trust. And to even more of his surprise, it only made him love the boy even more. Instead of feeling trapped and overwhelmed he felt pride and adoration.

“Hey, daddy?’ That small voice chimed from the doorway of the living room.

“Yeah, buddy?” He smiled, loving the way his new found name sounded from the sweet child.

“Can I ask you something?” Liam walked over, sitting next to Lee.

“Of course.”

“Since you are my dad, are you where I get my hungriness from?”

Lee sighed, wrapping an arm around the boy. “Yeah, buddy. And I’m sorry for that.”

“Why are you sorry?” Liam looked up at him.

“Because it’s a tough thing. I wouldn’t wish it on no one. And to know that I am the reason you have to deal with it-”

“I’m glad I have you, though.” He lays his head back on Lee’s shoulder. “You always know what to do.” The toddler gets comfortable in Lee’s arms. “Who gave the hungry to you?”

“My dad.” He rubbed his shoulders. “But my dad didn’t love me as much as I love you. He didn’t help me with it.”

“Why not?”

“Well, bud, some people are nice and some people are mean-”

“And grandpa was mean?’

Lee’s heart sank and his dad being called grandpa by his son. “Yeah, bud, he was a mean one.”

“You’re not a mean one.” His little arms wrapped around Lee’s middle. “You’re good.”

“Yeah, Lee.” Y/N said from the doorway. “You’re good.”

Lee gives a soft smile and leans his head on Liam’s head. “Thank you, buddy.”

“Hey, daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Can you do something for me?”

“What’s that?”

Liam has a mischievous smirk come over his face as he jumps up, pulling Lee with him. They left in the truck, Liam refusing to tell Y/N where they were going. Forty five minutes later Liam barged into the house with his dark curls trimmed into a mullet, matching his dad.

“Oh my God!” Y/N gasped in surprise.

“He wanted to go red but I told him he was too young for that just yet.”  Lee ruffled his shortened hair.

“Now he really looks like you!” Y/N smiled, pressing a kiss to Lee’s cheek and then pinching Liam’s.

Lee pushed the old mower through the yard, the sun heating his pale skin, sweat covering his body. For the past several months he’d fallen into blissful domestication. He’d never felt like he had a home, even with his mom and sister. Now he felt like he could always lay his head down with Y/N and Liam. The only problem with that is he always had the small feeling in the back of his mind that maybe it will all disappear.

“Daddy!” Liam ran out the front door with a big, tall glass of sweet tea. “Here!” He handed Lee the glass. “Mommy said take a break.”

“Thank you, buddy.” Lee stops the mower and takes the glass, downing most of the contents in one go. ”You being good in there for mommy?” Lee asks, whipping his mouth with the back of his hand.

“Yeah! Mommy is making a pot roast.”

“Yummy!” Lee kneels next to Liam. “Tell her to make potatoes, too.”

A gust of wind whipped through the air and Liam and Lee both froze. Lee stood, his nose in the air.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah, buddy, I smell it, too.”

Liam walked to the end of the yard inhaling deeply. “What is it?” He turns his little head with the breeze. “It smells-”

“I don’t know buddy.” Lee walks up next to Liam.

“Really yummy.”

“I know.”

The sound of laughing down the street made Lee’s head whip to the side. A young man walked next to a girl, the wind blowing around him and then filling Lee’s nose. He swallowed thickly as Liam tugged his pants.

“I know.” Lee repeated, watching the pair coming closer.

“Daddy,” Liam pulled harder.

Lee looked down and knelt back next to Liam. “Listen to me.” He turned his face to look at him. “Hey, Liam!” The boy turned quickly to him. “Take a deep breath and go inside.” Liam looks back at the people across the street and Lee snaps at him again. “Liam!” He stands and pulls the boy roughly by the hand, dragging him into the house.

“No!” Liam tries to pull away. Lee picks him up and carries him in the house, Y/N running to the door from the kitchen at the sound of Liam screaming. “Let me go!”

Lee placed him on his feet, Liam trying to push his way past him. “Hey, what’s going on?!”

She reached for Liam but Lee stopped her. “Don’t!” But it was too late. Liam bit down on her arm, a scream leaving her lips. “Stop!” Lee grabbed Liam but his teeth were deep into her forearm.

Lee reached his hand around Liam’s neck and squeezed his jaw at the jawline. He pressed harder and his little jaw released his mother’s arm. Blood dripped from his lips, Y/N’s hand wrapping around the fresh bite mark.

“Ow!” Liam yelled, stumbling back, falling on his bottom.

He looked up at Lee with mean eyes. “Why’d you do that?!” He yelled standing.

“Liam, listen to me.” Lee held on to the boy’s arms. “Calm down-”

“Let me go!” Liam growled out in a way he never had before.

“What’s wrong with him!” Y/N shouted, tears from both pain and fear.

She didn’t know what was happening to her baby. She wanted to hold him and comfort him but at the same time she was scared to touch him.

“Just stay back.” Lee told her calmly, his eyes staying on Liam. “Buddy, take a deep breath, okay?”

“I want-”

“I know, buddy, I know. You smelled it and you wanted it. But you can’t, okay?”

“My stomach hurts!” Liam pouted angrily, still pushing against Lee.

“I know, mine does, too, but listen to me.” Lee dips his head, making Liam look at him clearly. “You can’t just take people. You can’t just take people off the street and eat.”

“What the fuck is going on?!” She shouted from the kitchen, wrapping a towel around her arm.

“Just stay in there!” Lee shouted at her.

At the sound of Liam screaming again, Y/N rushed in the room and saw Liam snarling, saliva dripping from his mouth like a feral animal. Lee grabbed him and pressed his thumb into Liam’s neck.

“Lee, what are you doing?!” She grabbed Lee’s hand and he fell back.

Liam went for his mother’s flesh again sounding like a wild animal. She fell against the wall banging her head against the door frame. Lee shot up, pulling Liam back from Y/N. She watched in horror as Lee held Liam tightly, pushing his thumb into his neck hard. Liam’s face reddened and his fighting lessened. Little by little she watched as his little body went limp in Lee’s arms.

“Lee!” She pushed him to the floor, Liam’s limp body falling at her feet. “What the fuck are you doing?!” She scooped the child up and held him close. “Wake up!” Shaking him, the tears began to fall down her face.

“He’s okay!” Lee shouted.

“What did you do?!”

“I knocked him out.”

“Why-”

“Baby, calm down, take a breath!” He tells her trying to keep calm himself. “You have blood pouring from your arm. He is fine. I had to do it. You saw him. He was out of control.” He places his hand on her face. “You trust me. Okay?” She nods, trying to hold back the sobs. “Give him to me.” He gently takes the body from her arms. “God wrap your arm, I’ll be in as soon as I lay him down.”

Running to the kitchen she wrapped another towel around her arm, blood droplets littered the floor. Lee laid his son on the sofa before going to the bathroom and getting a washcloth. Holding pressure on her arm she stood there watching Lee carefully clean Liam up and make sure he was okay before turning to her.

He took her arm and immediately went to work cleaning and patching up the bite. “What happened, Lee?”

“I put him unconscious.” He sighed. “He smelled someone that triggered a feeding frenzy.”

“I-I don’t-”

“There was a boy, I smelled him, too.” Lee shook his head, whipping her arm, gaining a hiss. “It’s like being absolutely starving and smelling your favorite food. I’m talking, like, you go a week without eating and someone places your favorite dish in front of you.” He pressed the bandage on her arm. “It flips a switch in your brain and all you want is to bite. To fill that need. He is little and still pretty new so he doesn’t know how to control it.” He tossed the bandage papers in the trash. “Knocking him out was the only way to stop it.” He crosses his arms over his chest. “When he wakes up he will be okay. Until he smells that kid again.”

“What can we do?”

“When he gets that way you need to actually listen to me and stay away.”

“Lee, that’s my son!”

“He’s mine, too! But I know how to handle it! You don’t know what it feels like! It physically hurts!” Lee stopped instantly, his head snapping to the screen door. “Fuck!” He muttered in frustration. “That kids needs to get the fuck away from the house.”

She looks at the young boy near the street. “That kid?” She looks at Lee, his face twisted. “It’s doing it to you, too.” She watches his eyes follow the guy. “Isn’t it?”

“I can control it. Liam can’t.” He shuts the door. “Go shut all the doors and windows. Keep the smell out.” She rushes to the windows and pulls them shut. “I’ll take Liam to hunt. It’ll help.” Lee grabs the bag from the closet.

“Mommy?” The little voice sounds from the living room. “Daddy?” They rush into the room and Liam is holding his stomach curled on the couch. “It hurts. I’m hungry.”

“I know, buddy.” Lee kneels next to him. “I’m going to get some things together and we’ll go hunt, okay?”

Y/N pulls her baby boy into her arms and rocks him as Lee hurries around the house shoving clothes and random items in the duffle bag. “I’m sorry I bit you, mommy.” The little broken voice came from her arms.

“Shh, it’s okay.” She hugs him close. “It’s not your fault.”

“Alright, come on, buddy.” Lee swings the bag over his shoulder, holding out his arms for Liam.

“My tummy hurts.” Liam crawls into his dad’s arms.

“I know bud, we are going to fix it.”

“I want that man.”

“I know, but you can’t eat someone where you live. Remember what I told you about that?” Liam nodded, his head tucked into Lee’s neck as he walked out to the car with him.

“Excuse me?” A voice came from the road. The three of them looked to see the same man that triggered Lee and Liam standing by the mailbox. Liam’s nails dug desperately into Lee’s shoulders. The same sting in the back of his throat rising into Lee’s. “Do either of you know where Missy’s Dinner is?”

Y/N looked at Lee and she had a calmness come across her face. “Take Liam and go upstairs.”

“What?!” Lee muttered into the door of the car. “Are you crazy?!”

“I have an idea.” She walked away from Lee to the young man. “You’re not from around here, are you?” She asks, stopping at the mailbox.

“No, ma’am. Just passing through.” He walked forward, the sun setting behind him.

“I can tell. Everyone knows where Missy’s is.” She smiles. “Come in and I’ll give you directions.”

She gestured and the man walked past Lee, he held Liam so tight. He felt the boy fighting the urge to lunge forward. His instinct of what he is pulsing through his tiny veins.

“Y/N,” Lee stopped her, a tight hand around her arm, keeping her from following the man into the house. “What the fuck are you doing?!” He grunted out. “He is the one making him sick! Get rid of him!” Lee held Liam close.

“I know.” She looked Lee dead in the eye.

At that moment Lee understood. No words were spoken, just that one look.

“Are you sure?” He whispered to her. “We said never at home.”

“That is why you are gonna take him into the woods, away from the house.” She told him with a stern voice.

He swallowed thickly, looking at the man standing on the back step. “I was actually about to  head that way now.” Lee spoke up, handing Liam to Y/N.

“Really?” The man turned back.

“Yeah, come on.” He placed his arm around the young man’s shoulders. He looked back at Y/N. “I’ll be back.”

“He’ll be waiting.” She rubbed Liam’s back.

She walked back and forth through the kitchen holding Liam in her arms. He squirmed and whined. He was in pain from the sudden triggered hunger. After an hour and a half the screen door creaked open.

“Give him to me.” Lee hurried to her, scooping Liam up.

He was out the door without another word.

Chapter Text

Y/N sat at the kitchen table flipping through the paper, sipping her morning coffee. She glanced at the two boys asleep on the couch in the distance. Lee slouched with his legs spread across the floor from him, Liam cuddled into his side, curled into a ball, Lee’s arm wrapped around his little body. Dried blood stained the chin, neck and chests of both boys. Their shirts a deep crimson from soaking up the dark liquid. Liam’s dark curls sticking to his forehead from the blood.

She let them sleep, not knowing what time they got in last night. It was in the early morning hours, that’s all she knew. They were exhausted when they returned and went straight to sleep on the couch. She didn’t ask where he took the man. Where did he do it? Where did they settle to eat? Where did he dispose of it? She didn’t need to know. She just wanted them to rest after. It took a lot out of little Liam. He was still so new to this even though it's been a year of exploring this new kind of hunger.

The shuffling sound came from the living room, Y/N looking up, seeing Lee ease his way from the couch. Rubbing his eyes he stumbled into the kitchen with a yawn. “What time is it?” He breathed out.

“Almost nine.”

“I need a shower.” He made a disgusted face, looking down at himself.

“You’re scrubbing those shirts, not me.” She smiled up at him.”I thought we had an understanding to take off your shirts before eating?”

“Yeah, we were kind of-”

“Yeah, I know.” She stood, grabbing a cup for him from the counter. “Was he okay after feeding?”

“Yeah,” Lee took the cup from her. “The calm was almost instant.” He sipped the fresh dark liquid. “I remember when that happened to me for the first time. I was around his age. It scared me so much. I didn’t know what was happening.”

“I’m just glad he has you.” She walked over to him, running her hands through his reddish curls. “I surely wouldn’t know what to do.” She gives a gentle smile. “Go shower.” She scrunched her face. “Your hair is sticky.”

Lee kissed the top of her head as he walked upstairs to shower. She’d already had his clothes laid out in the bathroom for him and a bag to place his soiled clothes in to keep the bloodied clothes separate from the regular.

After showering he carefully woke Liam and made him a bubble bath. He washed him up and scrubbed his curls clean with the bubblegum scented baby wash, the water tinted red as it washed down the drain.

After pulling him from the bathe Lee wrapped him in a fuzzy towel and poured bleach down the tub drain.

“Why do you do that after we bathe?” Liam asked, drying his curl with a towel.

“Do what?” Lee grabbed the pair of garanimal dinosaur underwear, helping the toddler.

“Pour the stinky stuff after we bathe when we eat?”

“That, buddy, is to clean the blood after we eat.” He explains as he finishes helping Liam dress. “So the blood can’t get traced back to us.”

“So we can’t get in trouble for eating?”

“Exactly.”

“Who taught you how to do that stuff?”

“I learned as I grew up.” Lee tossed the towel aside. “Others like us through the years.”

“Daddy, didn’t grandpa teach you?”

Lee paused halfway down the hall at the question. It was a simple enough question. An innocent curiosity. Lee let out a sigh and sat at the top of the stairs. Liam going to him, sitting in his lap.

“Why do you get so sad when I ask about him? Why wasn’t he good?”

“Well, bud, my dad used to drink a lot. I got my feeding from him and he hated that part of himself and because I was like that he hated that part of me, too.”

“Do you hate that part of me?”

“No, buddy, I could never hate any part of you.”

“So why did he hate you?”

“I don’t know buddy. Everybody is different. Maybe grandpa didn’t have anyone to help so he was scared of himself. I couldn’t tell you. He wasn’t around much to ask.”

“I was scared the first time.” Liam pouted in the same way Lee did, he noticed that about the child and he would lie if he said he didn’t think it was cute.

“I was, too.” He wrapped his arms around Liam. “You know buddy, I had hoped that you wouldn’t get that part of me, but you did.”

“Is that why you used to always watch me?”

“What do you mean?” Lee furrowed his brow, looking down at Liam.

“From down the street.” Liam spoke. “You were at the window a lot.” He looked up at his dad. “I used to see you. Always watching mommy and me.” He scratched at his little pug nose. “You smelled different.” He laid his head on Lee’s shoulder. “You smelled different than the other people Different from mommy and the babysitter.” He let out an exhale. “I always felt different when I knew you were around. I felt better. Even though I didn’t know who you were.”

“I should have let you know who I was before, buddy, I’m sorry I didn’t.”

“Mommy said you were scared-”

“I was.” He kissed the top of his head. “But I am here now.”

“Will there ever be a time when I’m not hungry?”

“Sometimes. As you get older you will go longer and longer between cravings.”

“What’s the longest you’ve gone?”

“Two years.”

“This is a pain in the ass, daddy.” Liam sighed out, looking up at Lee again.

He laughed out loud. “I agree, buddy. But let's not use that word around your mama, okay?”

“Okay.” He stood from his dad’s lap. “I’m going back to sleep.” He rubbed at his green eyes. “I’m still tired.”

“You should sleep better not that you are clean.” Lee, kiss the top of his head again.

He watched from the top step as Liam walked into his bedroom and crawled back into his toddler bed.

“That kid is way too smart for his age.” Y/N spoke from the bottom of the stairs.

Lee looked down at her with a small smirk. “Yeah, he is. Doesn’t get it from me, that’s for sure.” He told her as he walked down the steps.

She reached out her hand, stopping him at the bottom step. “Wouldn’t be too sure about that.”

She places her hands around his neck. “I have an idea.”

“What?”

“Let’s go camping.” He curled a brow at her. “I know he is still a little hungry after that happening.”

“I’ll take him.” Lee shrugs. “I know you don’t like all that mess.”

“No, I’ll go. I want to go.” She takes his hand and pulls him closer.

“Oh really?!” He smirks, “You want to go camping?”

“Mhm.” She hums into his lips.

He pulls away when she goes for his mouth. “I might still taste the blood a bit. I-”

“It’s okay.” She whispers, her tongue grazing over his lips.

“But,” He backed away again. “You hate that.”

“I’m not too keen on tasting blood when I kiss,” She slid her hand behind his neck. “But, I’d still rather kiss you than not.”

He pressed his lips to hers and slipped his hands around her waist, backing her up till she touched the door to the small laundry room. “You know he is asleep upstairs, right?” Lee muttered, his hands sliding down to her rear.

“I heard.” She nibbled that spot beneath his ear that gave him chills. “So, we’ll stay down here.”

His tongue is in her mouth, tasting her. She can smell the faint smell of copper on his breath but she doesn’t care. All she wants inside her is the scent of stale cigarettes and his soft mint soap. The smell she had gotten used to laying next to at night in bed.

He has her back pressed against the vibrating washer as the bloodied clothes agitates in the cycle from last night's meal. Lee pulls her t-shirt from her and drops in on the floor next to the washer leaving her in her bra and gym shorts.

“Lift.” He whispers, pulling her up gently as he sits her on top of the washer.

Her hands are quick to work open the buttons on his ripped jeans, her nails dragging across his hip bones, sliding the thick fabric down his legs. He kicked his bulking jeans away and pulled her to the edge of the washer. His mouth dragged across her skin, the scent of fresh building sweat tickling his throat.

She kissed at his pulse as her every movement, her everything, filled him. His hands dragged across her skin, feeling her move beneath him he could feel that burning building in the back of his throat suddenly.

Gripping her body, tightly he pulled her shorts down roughly and pulled her panties aside, his face buried into the crook of her neck. He panted as he slid into her harshly, his hands gripping her hips. Her head fell back as he spread soft kisses across her neck and chest as he began pumping himself into her. Dragging her hands up his shoulders she pulled him into a kiss, tasting the barely there penny taste still left on his tongue.

His steady rhythm faded as his thrusts swayed. His brow was furrowed together as he swallowed thickly. “Wait,” He grabbed her hips, stilling her. “Stop, stop.”

“What’s wrong?”

He stilled inside of her. “Please, let me go!” He begged with his eyes still shut. “I can’t-”

“Lee, what’s wrong?” She keeps her hold on him, feeling his body begin to shake.

“Let go!” He opened his eyes and they were dark, pupil’s blown, saliva gathering at the corner of his mouth.

She pulled him close, he tried to keep his face from being buried, his into her neck, the smell burning the back of his throat like a fire poker, her arms tight around him. “It’s okay.”

“I can’t-” He inhaled her smell, the sound of the blood pulsing through her veins ringing in his ears. It was like screaming he couldn’t quiet down.

He grunted, jerking himself free, he grabbed her arms, pressing them down to her side. She heard him snarl as he sank his teeth into the ball of her shoulder. He felt her grip his hands at the pain of his teeth breaking the skin.. As soon as her blood touched his tongue the screaming in his head stopped. It was replaced with her heavy breathing as she struggled to keep herself calm. Realizing he was biting her, his head shot up and he looked down at her, with blood dripping from her shoulder. She wasn’t screaming and had no fear on her face.

She blinked her eyes, tears falling from the corners as he cupped her face. She could see the fear and panic in his eyes. “It’s okay.” She whispered quickly. “I’m okay.” She pulled him into her lips. “You’re okay.” She nodded, pulling his body back against hers. His whole head was fuzzy, he couldn’t think, or even remember to breathe. His body moved on its own with no communication with his brain.

The gentle movements of his thrusting slowly started again. He was gripping her so tight and he thrusted into her, his mouth lapping at the bleeding wound on her shoulder.  It took minutes until he was spilling inside of her, her body shaking around him.

After several long moments he backed away like a timid animal. His back hitting the wall.  “I- I didn’t mean to-”

“It’s okay.” Her voice was a whisper.

“What?” He looked back at her, still afraid to look in her eyes. “How- that’s not okay!”

“I let you do it.” She stood in front of him.

“No,” He pulled away and walked out the laundry room.

“Lee,” She went after him. “Stop.”

“No!” He shouted. “I’m not gonna be this person!”

“what person?” She tries to reach for him, to comfort him, but he pulls away.

“I’m not gonna be like my dad! Where I have to worry if I’m gonna flip on you when I lose my shit!”

“You didn’t, Lee! You’re not him!”

He grabbed her arm roughly. “Look what I did to you! I don;t even know why I did it! It just fucking happened!”

“I know! I know! She placed her hands on either side of his face. “I know, but it’s okay.” She said calmly, making him look at her. “Listen to me, I saw it happening and I let it happen.” She spoke out making sure he understood what she was saying. “I knew, and I let you do it.”

“Why would you do that?” He breathed out, helplessly. “Why would you be that stupid?”

“Because you would never hurt me!” She said adamantly. “You know when to stop. You are in control of it.”

“I don;t know if I am.”

“I know you are.” She pulled him into her. “I know you are in control.” She could feel him trying not to break down. “I could feel you knowing when to stop. I could feel your body reacting. “You control it, Lee.”

“Shh, it's okay. “You didn’t hurt me. Not like that.” The emotional flip flop going through Lee made her heart break.

“I’m sorry!”

“Shh, you don’t have to be.” She took his face into her hands. “Look at me.” She told him, holding his eye contact. “I knew what you were about to do and I let you. It’s okay.”

He cried himself to sleep in her arms on the couch late that morning, trying to understand what was happening.

Chapter Text

Y/N sat on the front step, shaking her leg anxiously, waiting for the blue pickup truck to pull into the drive. The sun had long set, the mosquitos thick in the air around the outside light. The air was thick with humidity as she took another break, looking at the clock over the stove again.

When she heard the familiar grumble she stood, her heart racing as she saw the headlights in the drive. Lee hurried out of the driver’s side, worry etched in his face.

“Baby, what’s wrong? I left work as soon as I got your message. Is Liam okay?”

“Yeah, He is fine.”

“Mommy, Is he here yet?” Liam ran to the door.

“Yes, go inside till I tell you it’s okay!” She snapped.

“What’s wrong?”

She grabbed Lee’s hand, pulling him into the house not stopping till she reached the basement door. “I didn’t know what to do?”

“He is a bad man.” Liam grumbled from the doorway.

“Liam, I said go to your room!”

Lee looked between her and Liam and quickly pulled open the door, rushing down the basement steps. He pulled the old rusted chain hanging in the piddle of the room and clicked on the light and saw a man, blooded, tied up  in the middle of the cement floor.

“What the fuck?!” Lee looked at her as she stood at the top step. He ran to the top of the step. “Who is that?!”

“It’s a bad man!” Liam shouted from the stairs.

“He was watching the kids in the park.” Y/N spat out. “Like, watching the kids in the park.” She stressed the word. “He followed a group to the woods, Liam could smell him through the crowd. He gave him a stomach ache. The man followed the kids near the woods, Liam followed him, I followed Liam.”

Lee pinched the bridge of his nose. “How did you get him in the house?”

“I knocked him out in the woods.” She said simply.

“She used a big branch, daddy.” Liam added from the stairs.

“Liam, Mommy doesn’t need your help!” She exhaled, pushing her hair from her face. “I made Liam wait in the car, the guy followed me deeper into the woods. When he tried to flirt, I took matters into my own hands.”

“What does that mean?”

“It was dark. I knocked him out with a tree limb.”

“Okay,” Lee shut his eyes walking back and forth in front of the clothes basement door. “The guy in our basement is a pervert.”

“Yes. No man looks at kids that way, Lee.”

“He stalked the kids, Liam stalked him and you followed Liam?”

“Yes.”

“You cornered him in the woods and when he made a move you hit him with a branch or something?”

“Also, yes.”

“And in the dark, you put him in the trunk of your car and brought him here, tied him up in the basement and called me?”

“Yes.”

“Y/N, does he have a family? Is he married-”

“It doesn’t matter! Lee, he is a predator! He followed a kid into the bathroom! He was making Liam sick, like before-”

“He is trying to get up.” Liam said from his crouched position at the cracked basement door.

“Get away from there!” Lee grabbed the back of his shirt, pull him away. “Go to the other room.”

“Daddy, he is a bad man.” Liam stood in front of Lee. “Can’t you smell it?”

Lee kneeled down in front of Liam. “I can buddy. He is bad. Just go in the living room. I’ll call you down in a bit.” He looked over at Y/N. “You stay up here.” She nodded as Lee opened the door and carefully made his way down the stairs, seeing the man trying to pull the ties from his wrists. “Hey there.” Lee greeted, cheerfully.

Lee’s entire demeanor switched. In a second he turned from worried boyfriend and and father to calculated predator searching for prey.

“Who the fuck are you?!”

Lee kneeled in front of the man. “I am the father of the one of the kids you followed into the woods.” He took the man’s chin in his hand. “And my girlfriend is the one who gave you that gash on your head.” He let his face go. “You know, the cutie you tried to flirt with?”

“I’m gonna fucking kill you and your little bitch!” The man spat.

“Now, now, no need to get nasty. I’m just trying to talk to you, here.”  Lee gave him a good look in the light. “I recognize you.”

“You what?”

“You’re on the sex offender list a few towns over.”

“What the fuck are you-”

“Clark Duncan. 6 foot one inch, hundred ninety seven pounds, you have a scar on your right elbow.” Lee grabbed his arm, looking at the scar. “A spider tattoo on your left calf.” He pulls up the fabric of the man’s pants showing the tattoo. “I know who you are. I’ve been watching you since you got to town several days ago. You landed on my kids radar, too.” He stood going over to the shelf grabbing a knife. “I learned tonight, my girl has a pretty good sense, too.” He leaned back down in front of the man. “Your kind has a stench. Like when meat is just on this side of going bad.” He pulls the knife from the sheath. “Still edible, still will do the job.”

“You are crazy!” He spit blood in Lee’s face.

Lee took the butt of the knife and slammed it into the man’s face, sending him falling backward. “Don’t be such a poor sport.” Lee stood, whipping his face on the back of his hand.

As Lee walked away the man swung his leg forward, sweeping Lee’s feet from beneath him. His back hit the concrete hard, knocking the wind out of him, the knife flying from his hand. With his hands still bound, the man grabbed the knife going for Lee’s chest. Lee grabbed it with his hands, bringing his legs forward he planted his feet on the man’s stomach and pushed forward, sending the fairly sizable opponent back against the wall with a grunt.

As he sank to the ground he ripped his hands apart, the makeshift rope tearing his already bruised flesh.  Sliding across the floor he grabbed the knife and sprinted up the cleared basement steps.

The door flew open and he was met with a sharp pain in his stomach. Y/N stood there with a knife in her hand, plunged into the man’s abdomen. He froze, looking up at her, unsure if the pain was real.

He stumbled back and fell back down the steps, landing back down on the concrete floor at Lee’s feet. He looked up at Y/N as she stared down at the man.

“Are you okay?” She asked.

“Fine.” Lee rolled him over to his back. The man swung his arm to hit Lee but Lee just grabbed him, pinning his arm down beneath his knee. “You?” He called up the steps.

“I’m fine.” She answered going down the steps.

Lee pulled the knife from his stomach, gaining a guttural scream. “Shut up.” Lee reached, grabbing an old rag, shoving it in his mouth.

“I smell the blood.” Liam says from the top of the steps.

Lee looks over to Y/N and they have a conversation within two seconds of a simple nod and a look.

“Come here.” Lee calls with the wave of a hand.

Liam runs down the steps stopping by his mom. “Mommy, are you bleeding?”

‘No baby, it’s not my blood.” She wiped her hands on her shirt bottom.

Lee grips the man’s hair and holds his twitching body still. “Bite here and pull hard.” He points to the man’s protruding artery, pulsing in his neck. Liam crawls over to the man and straddles his body. With ease he sinks his little teeth into the sweat and blood covered neck. When the man screams and tries to fight, Lee holds his hand over his mouth, muffling his scream, his opposite arm and a knee holding down his arms. Y/N bracing herself over his legs, keeping his lower half still.

The sound of the pervert gagging and choking on his own blood fills the room and soon his body stops twitching. Y/N looks over at Lee and he has flesh hanging from his lips, the man’s arm like a chicken wing in his hands now.

Chapter Text

It was midnight, well, a little after. Y/N had just gotten Liam asleep in bed. After he and Lee ate, she took him and cleaned him up in the upstairs bathroom. She made sure to have him brush his teeth and scrub every spot of red off of him.

Once done and Liam had drifted to sleep, she carefully closed the bedroom door and walked down the stairs, smelling the suffocating stench of bleach in the downstairs part of the house. Lee was in the basement, spraying the last of the bleached blood down the drain. Y/N grabbed the bit of bloodied clothes from the floor and tossed them into the wash, pouring bleach in.

Lee shut the door to the basement, leaning against the counter. She could see he was exhausted.

“Are you okay?”

“Just tired.” He spoke low.

Silence filled the air for a long moment before she turned to him. “Lee, I-”

“I’m going to shower.” He ignored her and went past her up the stairs.

She stood there fighting the tears that filled her eyes as she heard the door shut to the bathroom and the rattle of the pipes as he turned on the shower.

After showering Lee walked into the bedroom and saw Y/N sitting in bed. Her eyes met his and he quickly looked away, going to his side of the bed. He said nothing as he pulled the covers back, lying down, back facing her. He let out a deep sigh as he let his body relax into the bed.

She watched his body move up and down with every breath. The silence is louder than ever.

“I’m sorry, Lee.” Her voice was barely audible.

His body suddenly whipped around in the bed. “You’re shitting me, right.” Pushing himself up in the bed. “You're fucking sorry!” She jumped at the roar in his voice. “You brought it into the house!” He threw the sheets off of himself and stood from the bed. “Forget about me telling you I never do it in the town we fucking live in!” He made the round of the bed and stood towering over her. “You brought it into the house! Where we live and sleep! You were never supposed to see that! And now you’re taking part in it! What the fuck is wrong with you!?”

“What was I supposed to do?!” She snapped back, standing.

“You tell me and let me take care of it! Do you have any idea how dangerous what you did was?!”

“What are you talking about?!” She stood in his face. “You just hunted in town!”

“What if he would have woken up and gotten loose, Y/N?! Do you have any Idea what a man like that could have done to you?!”

“But he didn’t! I handled it!”

“It’s not your part to handle it! You have no part in this! This is for me and Liam to take care of!”

“That’s not fair! He is my son just as much as he is yours!”

“But you don’t have to do this! We do!”

“I know I don’t have to! I want to!”

“Why?! Why would you want any part of this!”

“Because it's a part of you and a part of him!” Her voice broke and tears started pouring from her eyes.

She turned her back away from him as she wiped her eyes, trying to calm herself. Lee’s shoulders fell at the sound of her crying. All his anger evaporated like water on a hot southern day the moment he heard the hurt in her voice. He walked up behind her placing his hands on her arms. She moved away from him and sat on the bed.

“Y/N.” He kneeled in front of her.

“Don’t, just-” She wiped her eyes again trying to stop the tears that just kept pouring from her eyes.

“Baby, please stop crying. I didn’t mean-”

“Do you have any idea how hard it is to watch the two of you hurt?” Lee looks up at her, unsure what she meant. “I see it,” She looks at Lee, her eyes filled with tears. “I see when you look at certain people. When you smell people. The twisted look you get. The constant swallowing like you can get something out your throat. God, and the way Liam fidgets with his fingers when he smells it in public.”

“You know when we want it?” He looked with a head tilt realizing what she was saying.

“Of course I do!” She snaps out. “I know the two of you like the back of my hand! I know how you both think and how you both react!” She wiped her eyes as fresh tears started building. “Seeing someone you love and care about struggling 80% of the time is just as tortuous. Granted a different type of torture then what you are going through but still-”

“This is exactly why I wanted to keep you out of this as much as I could. Why do you think I left in the first place?” He placed his hand gently on her cheek. “Because I knew sooner or later it would affect you in a negative way and look at you. You are struggling and it's killing you and I hate seeing you this way.”

“Lee, no matter what we do I will always be a part of it.”

“I know.” He pulled her into his arms, sitting next to her on the bed. “I’m realizing that, and it scares me so much. I’ve wanted nothing but to protect you and Liam from this. It kills me that I’ve failed.”

‘You didn’t fail.” She pulled away, looking up at him. “You still keep us safe every day. You have to learn to share the burden of it.”

“How about this?” He wiped her eyes. “We come to an agreement about what is and isn’t okay with this.”

“Like what?”

“For starters, no more take out.” He told her and she chuckled. “No more bringing meals to our house. If a situation like that comes along again, you tell me, and I’ll take care of it. And don’t ever do it on your own. It’s too easy for you to get hurt and I will never forgive myself if you get hurt trying to do this for me.”

“I can do that.”

“I’ll teach you how to decide who is bad and who is good. You’ve done pretty damn good with the last guy. You used your senses.” He poked her nose, making her smile. “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t proud of you for that.” He turns serious. “But you can’t be so careless. If Liam and I were to lose you, we wouldn’t make it.”

“I know, I’m so sorry.” She shakes her head. “I just saw Liam so uneasy and that guy-”

“I know, I know.” Lee places his hands on either side of her face. “You will learn. I’ll teach you.” His hand falls to her shoulder, going over the scabbed over bite he’d left on her. “How's this healing?” He pulls her shirt down her shoulder.

“It’s fine, Lee.”

“You sure?” She nods her head. “Yeah, it looks worse than it is. Just bruised badly.”

He leans forward and presses a kiss to the bruised area. “Did that bastard hurt you at all in the fight to get him here?”

“No. He was just heavy.” She whipped away a stray tear.

“Shh, don’t cry.” He pressed a kiss to the falling tear.

“Was he really a sex offender?”

“Yeah.” Lee sighed. “I saw him posted in the paper a few towns over last time I went hunting. When I saw him in town, I recognized him right away. I’d been keeping an eye on him for days, since he first got to town.”

“I’m sorry, Lee.” She began to cry again. “I shouldn’t have been so impulsive. I just saw him and knew he wasn’t right. And then when I saw Liam with that look-”

“Shh, it's okay.” He wiped her tears and pulled her into a hug. “Your instincts were good. You just have to work on impulse and follow through. When and where are very important in this.” He rubbed circles on her back. “I’m actually quite impressed how you picked up on him and tracked and lured him in. You did good, love.” He pressed a kiss to her head. “It takes time.”

“I want to do all I can to help my boys.” She wraps her arms around his middle.

“I know.” He pulls her in closer. “I know you do. But it’s too dangerous. We need to talk more about it.” He pulls away and pushes her hair from her face. “Later though. Liam and I will hold up for a while. It’ll give us time to have that conversation later.” He presses a soft kiss to her lips. “But for now, let’s get to bed.”

He pulls the sheets back and they both lay beneath the sheets. Lee stared at her, caressing her face with his fingertips in the way that always relaxes her and lulls her to sleep.

“You know what scared me?” She whispers, her eyelids drooping to the point of closure.

“What’s that?”

“I killed a man for you and Liam, and I don't even feel bad about it.” She shut her eyes, nestling her head beneath his chin. “And I know I’d do it again.”

Chapter Text

“Not yet.” Lee hummed softly as he watched Y/N at the corner of the trees. He watched carefully as her eyes scanned the small group of people near the bonfire. Her feet were light and hardly made a sound as she moved silently along the treeline. Not like the people would hear anyways. The loud music and bustling conversations sounded through the air.  “Don’t rush it.”

“I’m not!” She snipped, waving a hand, shooing him from her. “Back off a little!”

“Don’t let anything interfere with your senses.”

“Would you shut up!” She looked back at him. Lee smirked, crossing his arms over his chest. “You are blowing my concentration.”

“That’s the point.” Lee said matter of factly. “You need to know how to do this with surrounding elements.”

“Dude, it’s only been a few months! Cut me some slack!” She fussed in a yelling whisper, making Lee chuckle. “The guy in the green flannel.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.” She pushed her hair from her face, looking back at the man in question. “It’s a coppery, sour smell.”

“Good girl.” Lee whispered, leaning in closer in her ear behind her. Y/N smirk feeling goosebumps rise over her body. “Now, stay with him.”

“What about the girl?”

“The girl?”

“Yeah, the one with the low pigtails.” She pointed to the young girl sitting all the way across the group of people.

Lee followed her extended hand. “What about her?”

“Her smell is tangy, but not sour. It’s thick, thicker than the guy.” She inhaled a little deeper. “The copper smell isn’t as strong, either.” A sly smile creeped onto Lee’s face. “Don’t you smell it?”

“I do.” He pressed a kiss to her cheek. “You get the guy since you smelled him first. I’ll get pigtails.” He backs away.

“Wait!” Grabbing his arm. “You smelt her this whole time?”

“Yeah.”

“Why didn’t- you were seeing I would.”

“You’re really good for someone normal.” He smirks with a wink before running off.

“What?!” She said a little louder that she intended. “Lee!” She said again, louder, but he was already gone into the trees.

Y/N gave a grunt in frustration towards Lee with his comment and then left. Rolling her eyes she turned and focused on the man again. Immediately she zeroed in on him, the smell filling her nostrils. As the wind blew again her eyes shifted to the tree line across the open field. The smell was different, it was slightly musty with a touch of cedar followed by a scent that was just on the side of sweet. Lee. he knew it was him without seeing him.

“Damn, he moves fast.” She grinned.

She waited for several hours, sensing, and smelling Lee move across the tree line. She mostly stayed put, seeing as her target was in the same area. Y/N found it odd that Lee was letting her take down this man herself. He was a bit bigger than her by about thirty pounds or so. Normally he’d take the bigger person if ever Lee felt the need for two “meals”.

The crowd dispersed much later than both she and Lee wished. As the man walked into the woods, ready to relieve himself, he heard a stick break. His head whipped around, eyes searching. Y/N stayed carefully tucked behind a tree, her breath even and steady despite her heart beginning to race.

A rabbit jumped nearby, the man’s eyes darting towards the furry creature. “Fucking animal!” He murmurs to himself. He hums in annoyance as he unbuckles his pants. Before he can do anything else a hand clamps down over his mouth followed by a white hot pain in the center of his back. “Ahh!!” The muffled scream flowed through the air. He swings an elbow back catching Y/N in the face, making her tumble back, hitting the ground. He turns as his knees hit the ground to see her on the ground. His hands bent back, reaching for the knife that is still plunged into his spine. “You fucking bitch!” He calls out, reaching for her.

“I am,” She tells him standing. “Aren’t I?” She smirks knowing no one can hear him. Not with the music still blaring and most everybody gone.

She walks to him, placing her book on his shoulder, knocking him the rest of the way to the ground. He tries to push himself back up, but Y/N is quicker. She grabs the handle of the knife, still poking out from his back, and twists it, blood pouring out. The man grunts, his hands digging into the soil around him.

“Hey!” She hears the familiar voice of Lee and her eyes dart to the sound. “Stop dicking around and finish it!”

“I’m not!” She argues back.

“Then why is he still breathing?!”

“Ugh!” SHe grunts out, grabbing the knife at her ankle, slicing a quick line across the man’s neck. The gurgling sound is ignored as she stands. “Normally they are dead by now. I don’t see how the severed spine didn’t have him out already.”

“Not everyone dies the same, Y/N. You can’t expect the next person to go as easy as the last.” He lifts his hands to her face. “Did he get you?”

“I’m fine.” She pulls away, shooing him off.

“No, let me see.”

“Lee, I’m fine.”

“You wanted to be a part of this, fine, but you will let me check you out after each time. That was the deal.” Lee stated sternly.

Y/N rolled her eyes and turned to Lee, waxing a hand for Lee to do his inspection. “It was just an elbow to the face. I’m fine.”

“Yeah, well I don’t like you getting hurt.”

“Says the guy covered in blood.”

“Not my blood.”

“Where’s Liam?"

“Already started in on slutface.”

“How far out is she?”

“Not far. Go to the lake and wash off. We’ll meet at the truck in a while.” He leaned in to kiss her cheek but she pulled away. “Oh yeah,” He chuckled. “Sorry.”

“Yeah,” She smiled. “I’m not that cool with this for you to kiss me full of blood.”

She began to walk away when Lee called. “Hey!” She turned and looked back at him. “I love you, you know.”

“I know.” A soft smile spread over her lips. “I love you, too, Lee.”

Y/N walked to the lake and washed off all the blood and dirt. She let herself relax in the cool water, washing away her sweat. Once refreshed and clean she pulled herself out of the lake and made her way up the hill to Lee’s truck.

When Lee and Liam got back to the truck a few hours later Y/N was curled up on the front seat asleep.  “Mommy, is asleep?”

“Yeah bud.” He whispered. “Don’t wake her.” Lee told his son as he grabbed the bag from the bed of the truck. “COme on, let's get you into some dry clothes.” He sat Liam on the tailgate.

“Mommy been helping a lot.”

“Yeah, she wants to help.” He pulls a shirt out.” Take that off.”

“Why?” He gives a curious head tilt as he pulls the damp shirt over his head. “She doesn’t have to.”

“She does it because she loves up, bud.” Lee grabs a little pajama pants and hands it to his son. “See, mommy knows how bad we feel when we are hungry, so she helps us get food faster. It's her way of keeping us safe and no pain.”

“So, even though she doesn't have to, she helps us because she loves us?”

“Pretty much.” Lee pulls his shirt over his head. “And she is very special because normal people don’t know how to hunt. Not like you and me.”

“Is that why she comes now?”

“Exactly, because she is learning and she is doing it just for us.”

“Doing what for who?” Y/N yawns, walking up behind Lee.

“Mommy!” Liam jumps up and into his mom’s arms.

“Whoa!” She giggles, holding her toddler. “I was just explaining to Liam how you help us because you don’t want us to get the tummy ache from being hungry.” Lee explains as he poked Liam’s belly, gaining a giggle from him.

“I didn’t know you wanted to help us, mommy. It’s okay, Lee will teach you like he did me!”

“Mommy is a fast learner. She is doing good.” Lee kisses the boy's head. “Now, let's get you to bed. It’s way past your bedtime”

Lee grabs Liam and walks into the tent, getting Liam settled in his sleeping bag. The sky grew even darker as black looking clouds moved across the night sky, covering the stars and moon. Lightening flashed in the distance, unsure if it was heat lightning or just another southern summer storm. Alabama was good for that.

Y/N sat by the remnants of the fire, watching the embers glow dully. “Reflecting?” Lee asked as he walked up behind her.

“Liam asleep already?”

“Yeah,” He sat next to her. “It took less than ten minutes. The little guy was exhausted and had a full belly."

“You sure it’s okay for him to eat as much as he has been? You said you go months and years without it. He is eating every few weeks or every other month and-”

“It’s fine. I’m sure. I did it when I was younger. Yes, you need it more often as you get older, but when you’re his age, and even mine, you can do it whenever. It doesn’t become a need until the pain starts.” Y/N nodded in understanding. “You’re not tired?” He places a hand on her chin.

“I’m just unwinding before.”

“You really are getting better.” Lee smirks. “I’m surprised, actually.”

“Oh, yeah?” She gave a humorless chuckle.

“Very natural, actually.”

“I think it’s instinct. Because of Liam and you.”

“Maybe. For me, I didn’t learn anything from my dad. It was instinct and what came naturally to me as time went.”

“Yeah, well, murder and cannibalism aren't exactly typical family activities.” She looked away from the fire and saw Lee’s face sink a little. “I’m - I’m sorry, I didn’t-”

“I didn’t exactly want to turn you into a cold blooded killer, Y/N.”

“I’m not saying you did.”

“I didn’t want you part of this at all. You know that. You insisted-”

“I know. I’m not saying it’s your fault. I’m saying-” She watched Lee stand and begin to walk away. “Lee, wait!” She was quick on his heels.

“Doesn’t it worry you?” Lee whips around quickly.

“What?” She mouthed lowly. “What-”

“Are you the slightest bit concerned at how quickly you did this?! How fast you have adjusted to slicing people’s throats?!” He shook his head. “God, Y/N, you’re one step away from being like us.” Tears rising in his eyes. “I don’t want you to be this way.”

“Lee-” As she stepped closer Lee pulled away. “Stop, Lee-”

“Don’t.” He pushed her hands away, stepping back.

“Lee, talk to me. Please.”

He looked up at her and her eyes were pleading. He leaned against a tree, wiping the tears from his face. “I watched you tonight. I watched you track that man. Your eyes were so precise and so-”

“Because you showed me! You’ve spent months teaching me-”

“No, Y/N!” He snapped. Y/N stood there, unsure what he was getting at. “I was actually proud. I was so fucking proud watching you track and hunt and bring down that man. I thought to myself, ‘yeah, that’s my girl’. Then it hit me, you aren’t one of us. You aren’t forced to do this to survive. You aren’t saddled by this disease. Yet, there you were.” His lower lip trembled with emotion. “I taught you how to be a fucking monster.”

“You showed me to do what I already knew.” Lee furrowed his brow. “Because of you and Liam I already knew that this was gonna be part of me.”

“Part of your life, but it didn’t have to be part of you.” He sniffled. “Maybe it already was.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Y/N, I didn’t have to teach you much. I showed you how to finetune your abilities.”

“You aren’t making any sense, Lee.”

“You can’t teach that!” He stepped forward in her face. “You can’t teach that kind of instinct! Don’t you get it?!” He stood in front of him as tears pooled both their eyes. “From the first time, from the second you felt that the man in the park was different. From the first blow to that man’s head. From the first plunge of that knife into that man’s body-” He watched as Y/N eyes searched his face for answers. “It was easy because it's in you. It’s in your blood.”

“I’m not what you are, though. I’ve never eaten.”

“Something in you isn’t right. You know it and I know it.” Her eyes cast down, Lee sees tears falling from her cheeks. “Y/N,” He takes her face into his hands. “Don’t- don’t cry. Please?”

“I know something isn’t right, Lee.” She tells him as he lifts her face to his. “I can’t explain it.”

“You’ve never-”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Lee, I think I’d remember if I’ve ever eaten someone.” She sniffs. “I think, I think it;s because of Liam.” Lee looks at her confused. “I carried him in me for nine months. What if-”

“What if the natural instinct stayed behind. . .” Lee trailed off looking away. “It’s not impossible. I’ve heard of pregnant eaters craving it while carrying their kid.”

“Like craving-”

“Yup.” He smiled as Y/N made a disgusted face. “Apiytising, I know.” He chuckled. “That reaction lets me know you’re still somewhat normal.” He leans forward pressing a kiss to her lips. His grip tightening on her, pulling her into a deep embrace.

She can hear him trying not to cry. Pulling away she looks at him, wiping his cheeks with her thumbs. “Hey,” She soothes. “What is it?”

“This is all what I was scared of.”

“WHat?”

“Turning you into what I am.”

“No, Lee. You aren’t bad. You’re-”

“I’m terrified something will happen to you.” He blink up at her as fresh tears fall. “Please, dont ever hunt without me.”

“I- I won’t-”

“Swear it.”

“I swear.”

“I can not lose you or Liam.”

“I know, I know.” She pulls him close. “ We aren’t going anywhere.”
