Chapter Text
Run. That's all you could do. As the sound of feral panting and growling grew louder behind you, you ran. Your legs ached and screamed for rest, yet it would not come, unless you want to be met with a most terrible fate. So you ran. You ran and ran faster. And so did the hungry pack of wolves behind you. Hard rain pelted you, mud splashing up onto your legs as your feet met the wet ground. Your outfit had been torn thanks to the many jutting branches. Just when exhaustion began to take over, shelter was coming into view in the distance. You thanked whatever god was out there as you approached it, your appreciation would soon turn sour as you realized just what kind of shelter was before you. It was a castle. But not just any ordinary castle.
It was the castle of the beast. The beast that resided on the edge of the village. The feared beast that no one dare come near. If so, their fate was sealed.
A loud howl filled your ears, you turned to see the wolves growing closer. You had a choice to make now. Die by the teeth of wolves...or die at the hands of the terrifying beast within the castle. Either way, luck was not on your side. You were screwed, to say the least. You groaned before running up the stairs and throwing the castle doors open. Quickly running inside before shutting the doors behind you. You could hear the scratching and growls of the wolves outside.
You panted heavily, turning slowly, you wee met with the large opening of the castle inside. In front of you, was a wide open floor and just beyond that, a large staircase. It was so quiet, you could hear your own breathing. Your heels clicked on the marble floor as you walked forwards. You didn't notice until now, that you were shivering. The rain had done you no favors, you'd get sick for sure. You had to warm up somehow. However, your thoughts of finding warmth were extinguished as you remembered just who' castle you were in.
Fear ran down your spine, consuming your every thought. You froze in place, eyes slowly looking around your surroundings. The beast could be anywhere. And you were in it's domain, ready for the killing and eating. You swiftly head back towards the doors, but the sounds of the wolves outside made you freeze once you reached for the door. You were trapped.
Your breathing became erratic, shoulders shivering, tears brimming your eyes. Death surrounded you, and slowly closed in as you realized, you would never see the light of day again.
And that's when you heard it, the sound of heavy footsteps. You dare not turn to face where they came from. As they became louder and louder, so did your heartbeat. The footsteps came to a sudden stop. And then...
"Who dares enter this place?"
The sound of it's voice, the beast's voice, filled your mind with dread. Your legs quaked, you felt your world come to a grinding stop. It was like you were frozen in time.
"I ask again, before I lose my patience...Who dares enter my home?"
You felt sick, you couldn't find your voice. And even if you could, would you answer? Of course not. How could you answer to...that thing. That horrid creature. Your breathing was so forced and heavy, that it made your chest ache. Everything began to spin, the sick feeling growing as you tremble. The footsteps begin once more, it grew closer...and closer...and closer until...
Darkness...

When you awoke, you were greeted by warmth at last. The sound of crackling filled your ears. As you slowly opened your eyes, you could see the fireplace just in front of you. Your once aching body was eased by the softness of whatever you were lying on. You sat up and placed your hand down next to your leg, you look down to see you were sitting on a velvet red couch. You sink your hand into the plush cushion of the couch, it was the softest thing you had ever felt. You look away from the couch and at the fireplace. It was one of the most fancy looking fireplaces, something you'd imagine a rich person would own.
You put a hand to your head, you felt hot. Yes, you were defiantly sick from all that running in the...rain. Wait. Wait a moment. You gasp, upon remembering the events that lead you to where you are right now. You move your head left and right, you were in a room you didn't recognize. But if you were right about the feeling you had then...You quickly stood up, but winced and hissed in pain as you did so. Your legs were throbbing with pain. But that didn't matter right now, you needed to confirm where you were. You hobbled over to a near by window, you looked out and saw that you were at least two stories high.
You looked back in the room, then back out of the window. You were still in the castle...
But, how were you alive? The last thing you remember was that beast making it's way to you. Surely he would have killed you. Just as your racing thoughts began to take over your mind, you heard those same footsteps from before. You turn to face the entrance of the room, your heart picked up speed, your breathing becoming heavy with panic. Your eyes darted around the room, there had to be some place to hide.
But you would not hide in time. You saw it's hand first, it rested on the doorframe of the entrance. It's hand huge, claws long and sharp. Then the rest of it's body followed. What stood before you in that entrance was the beast that everyone feared and it....
Was not as beastly as you would have thought?
For a beast, he was well dressed. His posture perfect. The only thing inhuman about him, was his physical body. He was that of an automaton. His face resembled that of the sun, dark golden-orange rays stuck out from his round darkened face. No, the sun was not the right word, though it was close. This beast, more resembled a solar eclipse. He wore a dark orange suit, white puffy arm sleeves and black pants to match. His dark cape flowed behind his back as he walked into the room.
Well, beastly looking or not, this was still a stranger. A very... very tall stranger. You backed away as the beast grew further into the room. You backed away until you hit the window. You felt like a cornered animal, trapped, and awaiting death.
"You are awake. Good." The beast spoke, his deep voice making your chest rumble. He took another step closer, you pressed yourself further into the window. Any harder and you would break through it. The beast stopped as he saw you tremble under his deep gaze. "Please." He began. "Come sit back down. You are in no shape to be moving around." You barely paid any attention to what he said. You were too paralyzed by fear to think properly. The beast sighed and walked closer to you.
"Stay away!" You finally spoke. "Please...please don't come any closer!"
The beast stopped once again. "Very well." He turned his back to you. "You will fall ill soon, I hope you know how to aid yourself. As I imagine, you would be to frighten to let me help you." He glanced over his shoulder at you. You barely got a word out before you began coughing. You fell to your knees, as your legs finally gave out. Your coughing steadily became worse. You felt hot and cold all at once. You were, without a doubt, sick.
You could hear the beat sigh again. Before you knew it, he was in kneeling in front of you. And even while at a kneel, he still towered over you. He offered his hand. "Please, you will die if you don't get some medical help. I'd rather not have someone die in my castle. Please allow me to aid you." You stared at his hand. Why? Why was he being...nice to you? You looked up at him, his eyes filled with concern. There wasn't a hint of malice or cruel intent in his eyes. You felt dizzy all of a sudden. You didn't want to die like this.
So, hesitantly, you took the beast's hand.
Chapter Text
You were lead down a long hall, legs aching with every step you took. You barely keep up with the beast's fast strides, he took notice to that, and stopped. You took a few more steps before you were a couple of feet away from him, then stopped yourself. You look up at the beast curiously. "W-What is it?" You ask with a small voice. "You." The beast began. "You can barely walk, can't you?" He asked, turning to you. You didn't want to admit it, but it was true. You were walking at a snail's pace as not to irritate your legs any further. But even then, your legs still cried for some ease. You looked down at yourself, filthy. Your outfit was soaked, your legs covered in mud, your shoes felt like they were filled to the brim with water and dirt. And you were sure inside those shoes, your feet were swelled. You reeked of sweat and dirt.
To say the least, you were a mess. You couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed. You looked like a dog off the streets, and smelled like it too. You sighed and answered the beast's question. "Just barely." The beast hummed before walking closer to you, you of course, took a step back. "What are you doing?" You ask eyes narrowing. "You can't walk can you? Allow me to carry you." Carry you? This beast was offering to carry you? Why? Your suspicious expression did not change, you didn't make a move. "I will not force you." The beast said. "I just thought you would like some rest from walking for a while. Forgive me, I've overstepped." The beast began to move away.
"Hang on." You started, avoiding his eyes. "I didn't say no." You could hear the beast let out a low chuckle. "Then, allow me." You felt yourself being swooped up into the arms of the beast. You gasped and clung to his shirt as he did so. The beast began walking again. You looked up at him, for a beast, he didn't look as scary as everyone said he'd be...
"Here we are." You looked away from the beast and saw he had brought you to a bathroom. It was one of the nicest bathrooms too. Very clean, large, and it smelled of lavender. "I assumed you'd might want to clean yourself up." Well beast, you assumed correct. You were carefully placed down onto your feet once more. "Apologies, but I believe you'd want to do this part alone. There are some spare clothes in that closet there." The beast pointed to the far left of the room. "If need me, just yell." With that, the beast left you alone.
You stood there, speechless. How could a beast be so, nice? It made no sense, he was suppose to be a vicious creature who prayed on the innocent. Not a...well, a gentlemen! You made sure he was really gone before you stripped down to nothing. You turned on the faucet to the bath and waited for it to fill. Once it was filled all the way, you turned it off and climbed in. You sighed as the warm water covered your body. There was a shelf next to the tub, there were bottles of different kinds of soap as well as normal bar soap. You picked out a smell you liked before mixing it in with the bath water.
You relaxed, sinking a little further into the water until your head was the only thing not submerged. After a bit of waiting for your body to ease, you began cleaning yourself. When you were done, you got out and dried yourself before draining the water. You walked to the closet and pulled out a shirt, your eyes widened. The shirt was rather large, it could cover your entire body. And it did, as soon as you put it on. It must have belong to the beast. It smelled, clean. Like a freshly washed, warm blanket that had been drying in the sun.
You walked out of the bathroom, you were now in another hallway. You'd surely get lost if you decided to go exploring on your own. So, you did as the beast told you before.
"B-Beast?" You called. Within a few moments, the beast round a corner and approached you. "Yes?" You blinked. "You heard me? Where even were you?" The beast grinned. "I was not far. My hearing is quite good, I would have been able to hear you from farther away." The beast offered his hand. You slowly took it, and felt yourself being lifted up again. "Now, let's treat that fever." He said before walking again.

The beast had took you to a bedroom, you sat on the bed, waiting for the beast to return. While waiting, your mind couldn't help but race with thoughts. Like, why were you still alive? Why hasn't the beast killed and ate you? Why was the beast, not a beast? Why was he so nice to you? You sigh and try to calm your mind. All these questions would only bring you more stress. You coughed, a reminder of the sickness you had received due to the rain and cold. A shiver ran down your spine, you were so cold yet, you felt like your body was on fire.
"I'm back." The beast said as he entered the room. In one hand, there was a bottle filled with some kind of liquid. And in the other, a bowl of soup. The beast set the two items on a cart inside of the room next to the door, and rolled it over to your bedside. The beast gave you a questioning look as he reached the bed. You were confused, but realized, he was asking if he could sit down. You nod your head, the beast grinned and sat on the edge of the bed. "This medicine will help you recover fast. Though, I must admit, the taste is rather revolting." He grabbed the bottle and handed it to you. "But it will be worth it, once you're better."
You gave the beast a look. He noticed your hesitation and sighed. "It's not poison." He said with a firm tone. "If I wanted you dead, don't you think I would have done what you humans all said I would do? Eat you alive? String you up like an animal? Or perhaps just kill you for sport?" There was a slight venom in his tone as he spat the questions. "Why would I keep you alive, if I could have just done that?"
You sigh before taking the bottle. He had a point. You looked at the liquid inside the bottle, before quickly downing it. The taste nearly made you gag. The beast quickly handed you the bowl of soup, you took it and drank from it, desperately trying to wash out the foul taste of the medicine. You drank a few more times before setting the half empty bowl in your lap. "That...was the worst thing, I've ever tasted." The beast chuckled. "I did warn you." He said as he took the empty bottle away and sat it back on the cart. He stood once again. "Make sure you finish that." He said before he began to leave the room.
"Wait." You stopped him. He turned to face you. "Yes? Was there something else you needed?" He asked. "N-No, just...never mind." The beast looked at you for a few seconds before turning back around. "Rest. I will check on you in the morning." Was all he said before he left you alone in the room. You looked down at the soup, suddenly loosing your appetite. Were you really going to stay here all night? Alone, with a beast? Well, at least the beast was nice, on the surface that is...And, it was better than chancing another run in with the wolves.
You sigh and drank the rest of the soup before placing the empty bowl on the cart. You lie back on the rather soft bed. You tossed and turned a few times before getting comfortable enough to fall asleep.
Chapter Text
Sunlight softly graced your features as you slowly awoke, you yawn as you bring yourself to a sit. Despite the small cough, your hot and cold feeling was gone, along with the body aches. But boy did you have a headache, it felt like someone had bashed you over the head with something. You blink a few times and noticed that you were not in your bedroom, but somewhere completely new. Did...did someone actually bash your head and kidnap you? All thoughts of that along with any panic quickly vanished as you remembered what had happened to you the night before. You were running from a pack of wolves, and sought shelter inside of the feared beast's castle. And as it turns out, that feared beast was nothing short of a gentlemen. Not beastly at all.
But you still didn't fully trust him. Just because he acted like a gentlemen, doesn't mean he doesn't have something planned. He could be luring you into a false sense of security for all you knew. He was a stranger after all. Not only that, he was known to be deceiving. Though, those were rumors from the people in the nearby village. Speaking of the village, you needed to get back there. People would begin to wonder where you were. The village was small, everyone knew everyone. And that included you. You worked at the bookstore inside the small village, your boss would certainly notice you were missing if no one else.
You move your legs to hang off the side of the bed, they looked better than last night. But, were they feeling better? You went to stand, and the slightest bit of weight caused you to wince. Your legs were sore, but not nearly as sore as last night. Your whole body was sore, you had never ran so hard and fast as you did last night. You stood up straight and began to walk to the entrance of the bedroom. As you did, you bumped into something hard. Looking up, you saw the beast standing before you.
"Ah, good morning." The beast said with his deep voice, a bit raspy. He must have just woken up. "Um, good morning." You say back. "I came here to check on your fever." Said the beast. "And on your physical well being. Are you in any pain?" You blinked, still unbelieved by how nice this beast was. "I um, yes. I am a bit sore. Especially my legs." The beast hummed. "Can you walk?" You nod your head. "Then follow me." The beast turned and began to walk, you stayed close, not wanting to get lost in this large castle of his.
While walking, you questioned him about something that had been bugging you. "Beast? Why are you so caring? You're nothing like what the stories all say about you." The beast looked over his shoulder at you for a moment before looking straight ahead again. "Oh? And what do these stories say of me?" He asked, though, he knew enough. "Well, they say you're a violent creature who prays on innocent lives. A horrid creature of the night. A beast." You look up at him. "Yet, you're nothing like a beast at all. Why is that?"
The beast sighed. "So you humans still view me as such? Even after all these years?" He asked, only to answer his own question. "Oh who am I kidding? I had several humans barge into here just a month ago, in hopes to bring my head back to the village as a trophy of their conquest." Yes, you faintly remember that. Some men from the village boasted about how they could take down the beast of the castle. They gathered their pitch forks and marched their way here. Only to run back to the village with their tails between their legs. A with more than a few injuries.
"Did...did you really hurt them?" You asked. "A bunch of men stormed my castle and meant me harm. Would you not defend yourself if you were in my place?" Asked the beast. You suppose you would have, if that were the case. "They called you a monster." The beast stopped walking. You nearly ran into him again. He peered back at you, a slight glare in his eyes as he spoke lowly.
"I can be a monster, yes, if need be."
He then began walking again. You followed once you found your breath. You didn't doubt him, with his stature and strength, he could be quite monstrous. "Where are you taking me?" You finally ask. "To get you some medicine." You and the beast descended a set of stairs and took a left at the end of the hall, where you finally reached the kitchen. "Sit." The beast tells you, pointing to dining table chair as he walked past it. He opened the pantry and skimmed his clawed finger along the shelves with a hum. You sat down as you were told and watched.
"Ah, there you are." He grabbed a small bag of you didn't know what before grabbing a kettle. He walked to the stove, and lit the fire beneath it to heat it up. The beast filled the kettle with water before placing it on the stove. He then opened the small bag and poured what looked like leaves into the kettle. "Now we wait." He said before sitting across from you. "You had me answer some questions, now I have some for you." He said with a slight smirk.
"And, what would that be?" You asked nervously. "First thing, what on Earth were you doing out so late last night?" A light shade of pink dusted your cheeks. "I...fell asleep in the woods." The beat raised an eyebrow. "You, what?"
"Let me explain." You started. "It was morning before, of course, and I was going to my usual spot to read. I had worked a long shift that day, so, I suppose I fell tired after a while of reading. Next thing I knew, it was night." You finish. "I see, and how did you attract the wolves?" The beast asked. "I was walking home and, I guess I somehow caught their attention. I was so frightened, I just started running, I didn't pay much attention as to where. I just ran." You tell him.
"I see, and that's how you found your way here." The beast concluded. A loud whistle filled both of your ears. "Tea is ready." The beast said as he got up from the table and grabbed the kettle. He poured a cup full before passing it to you. "Drink this, you'll feel better." You held the cup up and sniffed it, the smell made your shoulders ease. You sipped at it, and felt your whole body relax. You hummed in delight as you took another sip. "This is delicious. Where did you get it?"
"Japan." Your eyes widened at his answer. "Japan? But that's so far away!" The beast chuckled. "I've been all over the world. I've had many years to explore." Many years? Just how old was this beast? He looked like a young adult, not much older than you. "I see..." You say before taking another sip. "Now, I have one more question for you." Said the beast.
"I don't believe we've properly introduced ourselves." He began. "May I know the name of my guest?" You felt a little silly for not giving your name yet, but could anyone blame you? Last night was one of the most stressful nights of your life. Needless to say, you were disorientated. You tell him your name, making him smile.
"Nice to meet you." Your name rolled off his tongue so pleasantly. What he said next surprised you.
"My name is Eclipse."
Chapter Text
Eclipse? The beast had a name? A very fitting name at that. "Oh, I see. Eclipse." You say quietly. You supposed it wasn't completely out of the question, for the beast to have a name. You just, didn't expect it is all. You liked the way his name sounded coming from you. And so did Eclipse. He grinned upon hearing his name leave your lips. "Now you won't have to call me beast anymore." He tells you. You felt a bit ashamed. Eclipse has shown you nothing but kindness and yet you still referred to him as a beast. All those stories and rumors were wrong, and Eclipse was living proof that he was no beast. No horrid night creature. No one who prays upon humans.
But a kind and gentle soul. But if this was the case, why was everyone so afraid of him? Was it because he was a loner? Because of his inhuman look? Was the the intimidating feel of the castle alone? You had always been told never to go near the castle as a child. Even as an adult you were warned of the place. Warned of what resided inside. But, what did reside, was the furthest thing from a beast yet.
"I am sorry. I've been incredibly rude." You apologize. Eclipse dismissed the apology. "You were only believing what you've heard from your people. I would have too, had I grown up hearing tales of a beast that lives in a scary castle."
"But, you're not a beast. And, now that I've gotten a better look at the castle from the inside, it's not scary. Rather, quite beautiful." Eclipse's eyes widened, but soon return to their normal shape. He tilts his head slightly as he spoke. "And what makes you so sure, that I won't become such a beast?" What did he mean by that? "Well, I'm not sure that you will or won't. But, as you are, you're nothing like what I've heard about you." Eclipse hummed, resting his head on his hand. "You are the first, and most likely only person, to ever view me like that." You smiled. "I'm sure others would understand you better if they had the chance to properly talk to you."
"That's a nice thought." Eclipse says with a sigh. "But it will never come to light. Humans will never understand me, they do not wish to. Their thoughts of me will never change." That made your smile drop. If only they knew. If only they knew that the person they've feared for so long, was nothing like they thought he was. "Enough of that though. What do you plan to do now?" Eclipse asks you. You gave him a confused glance. "What do you mean?" You ask.
"I mean, once you feel better, what do you plan to do? Will you return to your village?" It wasn't a question he really needed to ask. He already knew the answer. You nod your head. "Yes, I was planning on it." Of course. Eclipse put his hand to your head. "Your fever has gone. It's just a matter of you being able to walk back to the village."
You glanced down at your legs. They were sore, but you could walk. You could go home right now if you wanted. But, you'd be a liar if you said you didn't enjoy Eclipse's company. You didn't have many friends back in your village. And the people who did strike up a conversation with you...Well, let's just say it either came from nagging elders or the town drunks looking to spend a night with you. The only person you could have a decent conversation with in that whole village was your boss. His name was Tom, he owned a small book shop. It wasn't very successful, as very few people in that village enjoyed reading. You were amongst the few. It was what lead you to apply to work there. And to your luck, Tom hired you on the spot.
You weren't paid very well, but you never placed the blame on Tom. Like before, few people actually came looking for a good read. But you had enough to get by, and that's all that mattered to you. Speaking of Tom, he must be worried sick about you. You never were late for work or missed a day. You'd hate to make him worry any further. So with a heavy heart you spoke.
"I think I should head back as soon as I can." Eclipse nods at your words. "Then I shall prepare you something for your trip back. It can be quite far on foot." Eclipse stood from his chair and took a small basket from the pantry. He filled it with bread, meats, cheeses, and fruits. As well as a few bags of the tea he had made you. He sat the basket down on the table. You were taken back by just how much he packed you. Sure it took a little while to get back to the village, half and hour at most on foot. But what he packed you was enough for at least a day or two!
But you weren't going to turn down a little extra food. Lord knows you work your behind off getting a fraction of what was laid out before you. "Oh and, have this, for your troubles." Eclipse sat down a bottle of wine on the table. "One of my finest."
"Oh, I can't accept that!" You quickly say. There was no way you could just take something so valuable from him. Eclipse chuckled. "I want you to have it. You've been an excellent guest. Forgive me for getting personal but, I have not had someone to talk to in many years. You have given me more than I could ever give back. This is a start, I shall think of something to give you in return to make up for what you've done."
Your heart ached at his words. He's been alone for that long? You look at the wine for a few seconds before taking it and placing it in the basket. "Thank you Eclipse. And you really don't need to give me anything. I enjoyed talking to you, that's more than enough." You say with a smile. Eclipse fell silent for a few seconds before clearing his throat. "Y-Yes, well...I shall see you out." He seemed a little flustered. Why? You didn't have time to question it, as Eclipse was already walking past you.
• • •
"I wish you a safe trip back." Eclipse said as he handed you the basket he prepared. You graciously took it and gave him a warm smile. "Thank you." There was a brief moment of silence between the two of you. Neither of you made a move to leave one another. "Um, Eclipse?" You were the first the break the silence. "If it's not too much trouble...May I visit you again sometime?" It was a bold move, to ask such a thing of a person you just met. But, you could bare to know that someone so kindhearted would be alone. He deserved a friend. And you wanted to be that friend for him.
Eclipse was taken back by your words, his silence made you uneasy. "Um, though if you wish to be alone, then-"
"I'd like that." Eclipse cut you off. "T-To see you again, I mean." Your smile returned to your face. "I'd like that as well." You tell him. You turn to leave, but before you did, you gave him a small wave. "Until we meet again." Eclipse nods. "Yes, until then." As you left, you didn't see how Eclipse shuttered. Or the warmth that spread across his cheeks. He put a hand to his head.
"I hope I haven't caught their cold..."
Chapter Text
You made it back home to your village by the end of the day. Most of the villagers had retired for the night and were in their homes sleeping. But there were a few out roaming the streets, and of course the bar goers. You tend to stray away from the bar at night, in fear of drunkards or fights. You decided to stop by Tom's house before you went home. You hadn't shown up to work, he must be wondering where you were by now. You stepped up to his door and knocked a few times. After a moment of waiting, the door opened, revealing a frail and short older man in his mid sixties. He adjusted his circular glasses after seeing you. "My word." He began, his voice trembly. "Is that you? Where have you been? Why didn't you show for work?" He asked, concerned. "I went to your house and you were not home."
You smile slightly, in a way, it was good to know someone cared about you and your well being. Though, you hated that you made this poor old man worry over you. "I'm sorry, I uh...I went for a walk in the woods and got lost. But! I'm ok, I uh, found someone to shelter me for the night. They even gave me this." You showed him the basket. "If it's no problem, would you like to share? I have way more than I can eat." Tom sighed heavily. "Yes, come in. My dear, you had me so worried. I fear the worst had happened when I could not find you." He walked further into the small house. You followed and shut the door behind you.
"I'm so sorry for making you worry." You apologized. "It won't ever happen again. I promise." Tom lead you to the kitchen and you both sat down at the table. You spread out the food you were given and even offered Tom some wine. But he declined. "Oh no thank you. Though, if you were to ask me while I was in my prime, I would never say no to a free drink." Tom laughed. You laughed as well and put the bottle back into the basket. Perhaps another time you'd drink it. "So, you got yourself lost in the woods, eh?" Tom asked before taking a bite of bread. "I find that hard to believe my dear."
You nervously popped a grape into your mouth. "How so?" You asked. "Please. You're far smarter than that!" Tom says firmly. "I don't believe you would have gone into the woods only to get lost. However, I do not believe you are lying about actually going into the woods. Why did you?" He asked. "Well yes it's true. I did go into the woods. I went to my special spot to read, and I dozed off." Tom looked at you as if telling you to go on. "And I woke up, and got lost trying to find my way back."
"I do not like being lied to young one." Tom gives you a stern look before grinning. "Oh I see...You've found yourself a suitor. Is that why you're being so secretive?" Before you could deny his claim, he continued. "Ah, reminds me of when I was young. Why, me and Jim used to hide our relationship from our parents and the locals for months. We were too worried about what others might say. Eventually months turned to years. No one ever knew, to this day, no one knows of what we had. No one, but you my dear."
"Yes, you've told me this story before." You say gently, as not to offend the old man. It was true though, Tom and Jim had to hide their relationship for the time they were together until Jim eventually died. It happened just two years ago. He got sick, and there was no helping him. He died with Tom by his side. You remembered Jim fondly, he was such a kind man. Though he looked like he could crush your head with his thumb. You supposed Tom like the big and strong but sweet type.
"But that's not what's happening." You tell Tom. He gave you a confused look. "If you have not found yourself a partner, then why on Earth were you gone for so long? And I want the truth!" You sigh. "I don't think you'd like the truth. I wouldn't be surprised if you viewed me different after I tell you." It was then Tom took hold of your hands with his own wrinkled ones. "My dear, you know me. Whatever the truth may be, I will not see you any different. Why, you are like my own child to me." That nearly brought tears to your eyes. You hadn't had a parental figure in your life since your parents died when you were just a teenager.
Tom had filled that void for you. But you had no idea he felt the same as you. Perhaps, it wouldn't be such a bad idea telling him the truth then...You took a deep breath and speak. "I spent the night with the beast."
The silence that followed knocked any confidence you had right out of you. You quickly try to cover it up as a joke, but Tom stopped you. "The beast? You...You were with the beast all night? My dear, how is this possible? How are you alive? Or unharmed at the very least?"
"The beast isn't what you think he is Tom. He is kindhearted, he was concerned for me when I was hurt."
"You were hurt!?" Tom asks, worry filling him once again. You sigh. "Maybe I should start from the beginning."
So, you told Tom everything. From the moment you fell asleep in the woods, to being chased by wolves, to being cared for by the once thought horrid beast. Tom almost couldn't believe it. Everything he knew about the beast was a lie. He didn't care much about that, he was more worried for you. So what if the beast was nice? You were still alone with a stranger all night. Anything could have happened. But, he was grateful nothing bad actually did come from it. He was happy that you were still here, alive and well, and that's all he could ask for.
"I see...so the beast is a caring creature?" Tom asks. "I wouldn't call him a creature, but yes, he is caring." You say with a smile. "He's the one who gave me this." You say as you pat the top of the basket. Tom hummed. "Well then. What do you intend to do now? Tell everyone that the beast is kind? I doubt they will believe you my dear. Not everyone will be so willing to listen such as I." You shake your head. "No, I don't plan on telling anyone else about what happened. And you're right, they wouldn't listen. They're too blinded by fear."
Tom nods. "Maybe one day..." He mused. "But until then, you plan on visiting him again?"
"Yes, he needs a friend. I want to be there for him." Tom smiled at your words. "You're a good person, you know that? The beast should be so lucky to have a friend like yourself." You chuckle. "Thank you Tom." You then yawned. "You should get home my dear. It's getting late." Tom tells you, you nod and stand from the table. You pick up your basket as Tom leads you to the door. "I'll see you in the morning. I promise." Tom raises an eyebrow. "You better. I expect to see you more often my dear. Don't ever worry me like that again."
"I won't. Goodnight." You say before leaving the house. "Goodnight my dear." You heard Tom say before he shut the door. You walk to your home and go inside. You went to the kitchen and sat your basket down before heading upstairs. Kicking your shoes off before falling into bed with a heavy exhale. So much has happened, but you don't regret it. You just made a new friend, and you intend on keeping him around for a very long time.
"Goodnight, Eclipse." You say before falling asleep.
Chapter Text
You woke up early to get ready for your usual day at work. You hopped out of bed and got dressed before heading to the kitchen to prepare a quick breakfast for yourself. After eating, you hurried outside and through the street to the bookstore. You were greeted by your boss Tom, of course. He was always here before you, readying the shop before it opened. "Good morning my dear." He said with a wrinkly smile. "Good morning Tom." You smile back before taking your place behind the checkout counter. "Oh, my dear, do you mind to do a favor for me?" Asked Tom. "Of course." You say before walking to his side. "This place could use a little dusting. I'd do it, but you know how my old back gets."
You nod. "Don't worry, I'll take care of it." You crouch down behind the counter, inside were three shelves. You grabbed the feather duster before walking out from behind the counter. You got to work cleaning up. You heard the door bell jingle, telling that someone had entered. You turn away from the window you were dusting with a cheery smile. "Welcome to Tom's...Bookstore." Your smile faded as you saw who it was that entered. "Ah! There you are!" It was a man in his mid to late twenties. He smirked as his eyes landed on you. "I've been looking everywhere for you my sweet." This man, his name was Alexander. But he was known to the locals as Alex, as that's what he preferred to be called.
And of course, being the town's beloved hero, everyone agreed to it with no problem. He was the hero because he had slain a bear that had wondered into the town one night, it nearly killed a woman. Ever since then, he was known as a hero to everyone. The women we're all over him, the men wanted to be him. Yes, he was truly a god among the peasants. At least, that's what he thought. But that wasn't the most annoying part about him. The most annoying part, was the fact that out of anyone in town, he chose you to pursue. He had been asking for your hand in marriage from day one. And every time, you politely refused.
However, your constant rejection did not faze him. If anything, your "stubbornness" only made him want you more. You sigh and continue cleaning. "I know you're not here to buy a book." You mutter. "That's right. I'm not." Alexander said, almost proudly. "I'm here because I want to know where you snuck off to yesterday. I was planning a surprise visit and you were not home. You were not anywhere!" You roll your eyes. "That sounds very...sweet of you. But I'm afraid I don't have to explain my whereabouts to you, Alexander."
"Alex." Alexander corrected you. "Alex." You sigh. "How could you not tell me? Your whereabouts are very important to me! As your future husband, I must know where you are at all times." You set the feather duster down, a little hard. "Alexander-"
"Alex."
"Alex...How many times must I tell you? I am not interested in marriage." Alexander only chuckled at your words. "I'm sure you say that to a lot of men who try and ask you to marry you. I assure you, I am no ordinary man!" He said as he flexed his arms. He defiantly had more muscle than brain. "And just think about how lucky you'd be! You'd be down as the person who married the town hero! Think of how many women you'd make envy you!" He smirked. That sounded like an actual nightmare to you. You sigh and before you could argue, Tom intervened. "Young man, if you are not here to buy, then I am afraid I must ask you to leave. And they are clearly not interested in your proposal."
A tiny smile made it's way onto your face at Tom actions. Alexander scowled. "This does not involve you old man. Go back to your books." He waved him off. It was your turn to scowl you stormed over to Alexander and hastily shoved him out the door. "Do not speak that way to Tom! And if you know what's good for you, you will stop these ridiculous attempts at swooning me!" With that, you slammed the door in his face. You groaned as you leaned against the door. "I'm sorry you must deal with that idiotic man my dear." Tom said sympathetically. You smiled weakly. "Ah, no, I'm sorry you had to see that. And I'm sorry he spoke to you in such a way."
Tom chuckled. "You know how young men can be." He went back to organizing the books on the shelves. "If he keeps this up, you come to me. I may be old, but I will do my best to defend you." Your smile grew, walking over to Tom and kissing him on his forehead. "Thank you Tom." But you knew only you could handle this terrible situation. "I'll get back to work now." You say as you went back to cleaning.
As the day went on, Tom noticed that you were a little distracted. You would half do certain tasks and bump into walls and bookshelves. All day, you couldn't stop thinking about Eclipse and seeing him again. You couldn't help but feel a little excited, aside from Tom, Eclipse was someone you could see as a potential friend. Tom stopped you sweeping the floors to talk to you. "My dear, you seem...a bit lost in thought. Is everything ok?" He asks. You blink before warmth rushed to your cheeks. "Oh um, yes. Everything is fine." Tom raised an eyebrow before smiling. "You're thinking of that Eclipse fellow, aren't you?"
Your cheeks heated up a bit more. You look away from him, embarrassed. He laughed and placed his hand on your shoulder. "I can tell, you really like him. Don't you?" You turn to face him. "He is a good person. I feel, like I could really be friends with him. I don't have many as it is...or any. Aside from you of course." Tom pat your shoulder. "Go on then." You gave him a confused glance. "You're free to go see him if you wish." You couldn't stop the grin that found it's way to your face. "You mean it? I can go? Oh, but what about work?"
"I will take care of the rest. It doesn't get that busy anyway. Go on." You hugged Tom before rushing towards the door. But before you left you turn to him and spoke. "I will work twice a hard tomorrow to make up for today! I promise! Thank you again Tom!" You then rushed outside. You were careful not to be seen by anyone as you snuck out of the village and into the woods. You eventually made it to Eclipse's castle by the evening. You felt butterflies in your stomach as you walked up the stairs to the door.
You knocked a few times and waited. And waited. And...waited. No answer. You lightly push on the door, putting more pressure as needed to open the large door. You stepped inside before closing the door behind you. "Eclipse?" You called. "It's me." You say your name. You then heard footsteps, only this time, you were not afraid. "You." You heard Eclipse's voice before you saw him approach the top of the staircase. "You...came back?" You nod your head with a smile. "I did."
Eclipse looked genuinely surprised as he descended the staircase. You look up at him as he approached you. "I thought we could..." You trailed off, suddenly doubting of yourself. What if Eclipse did not want to be your friend? He's been alone for a long time, perhaps he liked it that way? But, it was so sad to think about. Surely he would want someone in his life? "We could? What?" Eclipse asks after your stretch of silence. "Um...I know this might be silly." You say with a weak laugh. "But I thought maybe, I could be your friend?" Eclipse's breath hitched in his throat, eyes widened slightly.
"B-But! If you don't want to that's fine. I just thought-"
"I would." Eclipse slowly smiled. "That sounds...nice." You smiled at his words, relief washing over you. "Then, I look forwards to a very fulfilling friendship with you, Eclipse." Eclipse chuckled softly.
"As do I."
Chapter Text
You had spent the evening talking about your day with Eclipse. In return you listen to him speak about his day went. He explained how he didn't do anything worth really talking about, but you insisted. You wanted to know if he had a good day. That made him smile, and he continued to tell you. He didn't do much. He made breakfast, tidied up a bit, read a book and organized a few things in his library. That last part caught you by surprise. He had a library? You glance around the castle, well, it's not that big of a surprise. The castle was quite large. It made sense that there would be a whole library inside of it somewhere. You'd have to ask him more about that later.
"This Tom fellow, he seems like a good man." Eclipse said before he sipped at his tea. You set your own cup down and smiled. "Oh he is. I don't know what I do without him." Eclipse hummed. "And you have an admirer I hear?" You sigh. "Don't even get me started! He just will not leave me alone no matter how many times I tell him to go away!" Eclipse chuckled. "I can not blame him entirely. You are a very kind person. He'd be so lucky to have you as his spouse." That made your cheeks heat up slightly. "You...you mean that?"
Eclipse quickly apologized after seeing your reaction. "I'm sorry, I mean nothing by it. Well, I do mean that you are a kind person but...Oh listen to me ramble." He sat his cup down. You couldn't help but laugh. "I know what you meant. Thank you." You say with a grin. Eclipse's smile return to his face. "However, I do hate that you are being harassed. No one should go through this kind of ordeal." You take another sip of your tea. Eclipse hated it just as much if not more. You didn't know what to do about it anymore, and you were at your wit's end. "He even shows up at my house at the most random of times. Always proposing to me. I can't take much more of this."
Eclipse didn't like seeing you like this, all stressed out over some ignorant man. Perhaps he should take matters into his own hands...He quickly got rid of the thought. No. He may have been a beast, but he would most certainly not act like one. "Is there anything I can do?" He asked. "Not unless you can make him go away forever." You mutter. Technically, Eclipse could do just that. But again, he would not. He would not play into the accusations of the near by village people. "I will handle this though." You say. "One way or another, I will get him to stop. Hopefully."
"Hm. Yes, I hope you can, for your sake. But, if you do need my help, do not be afraid to ask. I will do what I can." Eclipse tells you. "You're too kind Eclipse. Really." You say with a smile. Who knew you would have made such a great friend like Eclipse? And to think, it all started with you fearing for your life. "I do my best." Eclipse joked. "Well, your best is certainly enough." You chuckle. Eclipse looked at a near by clock, then glanced out of the window. It was already night. "It's quite late. I guess we lost track of the time."
"I guess so." You nod. "I know you must return to your village at some point. But I'd rather you not go now. Not after last time." Eclipse tells you. "If you'd like, you may stay the night here." You glanced out the window yourself, and shuttered at the thought of potentially getting chased down by wolves again. "Yes, I think I might take you up on that offer. Thank you, though I hope I'm not intruding."
"Think nothing of it." Eclipse grins. "I have plenty of room for you. Come." Eclipse asks you to follow him. You stood and trail him up to one of the many bedrooms. It was very nice looking. The bed was huge and soft to the touch, there was a giant wardrobe filled with clothes an shoes, the round velvet rug in the center of the room looked like it was crafted by the most skillful of hands, and the window seat let in the soft moonlight. You got a pretty good view of the stars from that window. "What do you think? If it's not to your liking, I have plenty more rooms to choose from."
You turn to Eclipse. "It's wonderful, thank you Eclipse." You couldn't ignore the relived sigh coming from Eclipse, he smiled before talking. "Then, I shall leave you in peace." He began to walk out but you stopped him as you spoke. "Eclipse?" He stopped and turned to face you. "Yes?" He asked. You stare at him for a second, just to take in his features. You couldn't help but admit, in your own mind of course, that he was rather handsome. Or maybe, he was just one of the very few men in your life who had some decency. Some respect. But you couldn't deny that his looks were a killer. You quickly clear your throat after realizing you were staring.
"I just wanted to say, thank you, for all of your kindness." Eclipse blinked before avoiding your gaze. "As I've said, think nothing of it. I..." He finally looked at you again. And you couldn't help but notice the slight blush on his face. "I like having you here. You have, filled a void in my heart. And I couldn't be more grateful for you and all you've done for me. Being kind is the least I can do." His words made your heart skip a beat. Oh why must he be so charming? Now you were blushing. "All I've done?" You ask. "I haven't done much."
"Oh but, you have." Said Eclipse. "You are the only person who's ever dared to befriend a beast. You have filled the lonely castle with your presence. You bring me joy, unlike I've ever known. And I thank you for it."
There goes your heart again. "Well...that's very kind of you to say. I'm glad I can bring you such joy." The two of you went silent for a moment, just taking in each others words. The silence was eventually broken by Eclipse. "Goodnight. And pleasant dreams." You nod and wish him the same before he closed the door, leaving you alone. You stood there for a moment, just thinking about what he said. Then, you walked to bed before laying down. Though, sleep would not come to you so easily. Your heart was racing with every thought of his words. You toss and turn and try lying as still as you can, and yet nothing.
Hours passed, and still you could not seem to fall asleep. So with a heavy sigh, you rose from your bed and walk out of the room. You made sure to stay quiet, as not to disturb Eclipse. You snuck through the halls and down the stairs to the main floor. You noticed a long hallway to your right, you walk down it until you are faced with a large set of doors. You place your hand on the door to open it.
"What are you doing awake?"
You gasp sharply at the sudden voice. You quickly turn and was faced with Eclipse. He looked concerned. "Oh, it's just you." You exhale. "Yes." Eclipse nods. "Having trouble sleeping?" He asks. "Yeah, I tried." You weakly laughed. "Is something on your mind?" Yes, you. Is what you thought. Though you'd sound like a fool if you actually said that. "Yes." You nod. "Um, but I'd rather not say."
"That's alright. I will not pry." Eclipse walks next to you and looks at the doors in front of him. Then he looks to you. "Curious?" He asks with a slight smirk. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't." You tell him. "Alright. I've been meaning to show you this, but, I suppose now would be a good time." Eclipse put his hands to the doors and pushed them open. You followed after him inside and marveled at what you saw.
Notes:
I think I'm going to go on another hiatus.
I don't have any chapters to any stories saved up. So I might take some time to do that and relax my brain a bit.
