Work Text:

It was a beautiful night.

Kit was already asleep back at the house, so Jewel decided to bring Surge outside. There was this hill right outside of Spiral Hill where she would just lie on the grass and look at the night sky. She wanted to do that again.

But this time, with someone she loved.

“Honestly, it’s better than you dragging me out at 5 AM to watch the sun rise,” Surge said as Jewel pulled her towards the hill.

“I have never done that.”

“Something tells me you would, though.”

“Do you really think the curator at the Restoration would wake up at 5 AM?”

“…fair point.”

Finally, the two had made it towards the edge of the hill.

“Alright. we’re here,” Jewel said, looking up. “And… oh, wow, look at that!”

“Look at what-?” Surge asked, looking up with her.

It was so dark, yet so bright. As if it was the first time Surge looking up into the night sky.

What would just be empty darkness was filled to the brim with stars.

“Well, shit. Now I see why you brought me out here,” she admitted.

She looked down to see that Jewel was already sprawled on the grass, smiling.

Chuckling, Surge took off her headband, letting her quills flop down. “Feels good letting these babies breathe everyone once in a while.”

Then, she joined Jewel in lying on the ground.

“You could probably see the entry to another universe if you squint hard enough,” she said.

“Sure,” Jewel laughed. “If you say so.”

Then, something bright made its way to Surge’s left eye. She tilted her head a bit to find that it was the moon.

“Woah, I didn’t even see the full moon!” Jewel exclaimed. “It gets more beautiful every time I look at it…”

Surge smiled at Jewel’s childlike enthusiasm. “…it’s fine. I guess.”

The beetle sat up at that, raising an eyebrow. “You guess?”

Surge went back to looking at the stars. “I mean, it’s shiny and pretty and all that, but… YOU’RE right next to me.”

The beetle stared at her, lost.

Her girlfriend just turned her eyes toward her, still laying down. “Your head shines. You’re pretty. What’s so special about the moon?”

That got Jewel to blush a little. She scooted closer to Surge, until she was in her point of view.

“Are you trying to flirt?”

“Pshh, nah,” she answered. Although the red tint was kind of giving her away.

She looked into Jewel’s eyes. “…is it working though?”

Jewel sighed, but then gave her a soft smile, cupping her face. “…maybe.”

And suddenly, she noticed how… CLOSE they were. She wanted to back away at first, but…

“Um… Surge. Can I-?”

“Yeah.” The tenrec raised her arm and put a hand on her cheek. “You can.”

That was all Jewel needed to hear. Slowly, they closed the short gap in between them.

It wasn’t even the first time they’ve kissed like that, but something about it this time was really… magical. Surge couldn’t put it into perspective.

It felt like hours until they finally pulled away.

The beetle started playing with Surge’s quills. “Thanks for coming out with me tonight.”

“No problem.”

“I love you so much.”

“Love ya too, Mint.”
