    “Adam,” Shiro says, voice cold as the heart of winter, “really?” He lifts something sheer and filmy and white, with some delicate black and silver detailing, from the box, and for a second Curtis doesn’t realize what he’s seeing, and then it registers: lingerie. Adam has given Shiro lingerie. He’s not sure what to make of that fact in a vacuum, but the look on Shiro’s face makes him want to wring Adam’s neck.

     

    “Gag gifts aren’t supposed to be cruel,” Curtis snaps.

     

    Adam is good at being inscrutable, and the scarring on his face helps, but the surprise and pain in his organic eye is louder than a scream, and Curtis feels the defensive anger on Shiro’s behalf draining away. “It’s not a fucking gag gift,” Adam says, voice tight like he’s trying not to cry. “Jesus, fuck me for thinking you’d look pretty in it.”
