Chapter 1: The Man Himself

Chapter Text

As the school year was coming to an end, more and more exams began to pop up, filling up your schedule.
It seemed like the cycle of studying and taking exams was endless.
You've been studying at the school library every morning and evening to prepare for your biology exams that were coming up in 4 days.

The library had two storeys, and was separate from the main school building.
It was open 24/7 for students, meaning you could find students asleep at their textbooks during nightly hours.
The library had dozens of round desks to study at and giant bookcases spread around both floors, making it seem like a maze to find the correct textbook for your subject.

-..Luckily, the three main sciences were popular subjects, making them easy to find.

The old building had a comfortingly light smell of cinnamon and dust, and had beautiful mosaic windows throughout the aged lot.

-

It was 6 in the afternoon, and you, in particular, were tirelessly studying for your final year exams as the Ultimate Anatomist.
Since the school was a mix of regular and Ultimate students, each pupil got divided into a section and given a personalised exam to meet their needs, and requirements.

'..If only body science didn't have so many branches, maybe I wouldn't have to be studying right now..' you thought to yourself, debating whether you should've even bothered trying to pursue your natural talent, since your interest in it was.. questionable..-
-..Oh well..I guess you couldn't back down now.
Making effort to not delay your study session, you carried on with memorising all of the long, funky named bodily features and parts.

-

As the evening sky began to wash over, creating a beautiful collage of bright reds and yellows, and the hushed mutters of students began to quiet down, you lost every ounce of motivation you previously had.
Each word you read from the ancient book, started blending with the other, losing all sense of meaning.
You sluggishly close the old, dusty textbook you had been reading from, and checked the time.

"Nine pm.." you murmur to yourself.

It had been a total of 3 hours since you started your study session, and at this point you were fighting for consciousness, and felt a headache coming from a mile away.
You settled for finishing up today's meeting with the library and going back to your dorm room for some much needed rest.

Your bones cracked as you stood up,
and you picked up the heavy book walking it back from where you got it.
As you slid the book back into its place, the sound of someone rummaging through your bag caught your attention.
Immediately you spun around to stop the thief and-..oh.. ..it's just Kazuichi..sigh.

Kazuichi Soda was one of your only friends at the university, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but you loved him for who he was.
"Soda! What did I say about taking food from my bag??!" You spoke with slight aggravation in your tone, and your eyebrows furrowed at the sight of the 'thief'.
You stand beside the large bookcase, which somewhat fills your nose with dust.

The neon haired dork just smiled at you cheekily whilst taking out an energy bar, you completely forgot you had brought.
"You know what, have it, I don't want it anyways." You sighed at him, you preferred actual sleep over fake energy anyways..-
..- . Okay maybe not all the time.

Kazuichi was one of those people who never packed food for themselves nor brought money to buy food, and lived off of others, and he'd probably stay that way forever.

"Don't act like you don't want the bar, planet-girl~" he waved the bar at you teasingly with a large grin on his face.
"Wh- that's astronomy! And I don't want the bar!" You bellowed at him, trying to ignore the horrendous nickname given to you.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever, thanks for the bar though, hah" He rolled his eyes jokingly, and jogged over to where his friends were sitting..-
-..You saw that they were bundled together in a circle, pointing and reading something out of a textbook.
You could tell they were reading the sexual intercourse chapter of the biology book , through the constant giggling coming from their direction.

God if you could make friends as easily as him.
You sighed to yourself, looking at the library full of students- packed to the brim, every desk filled with people, some people even studying while standing, or sitting on the ground, compared to the stark contrast of the empty desk you had been sitting at- ...wait.

As you look over the entire library to grimace at the fact no one wanted to sit with you, you suddenly hear a voice hum from where you had been previously studying.
From your desk...-
-..Well.., not *your* desk, but it was basically yours at this point.

While attempting on a sneaky peak to see who it was, you saw a figure of a blonde haired man with a buzzcut..-

-..Now, usually you would've been delighted to have others in the library sit and study alongside you, ..but what made it different was that it seemed that the guy had been sitting at your desk for a while now!
He had all of his stuff unpacked: a small snack, pens and pencils, two entire textbooks...

..Since when..?

You shook your head thinking maybe you were so indulged in Soda stealing your food, that you didn't notice him- which was weird considering you thought yourself to be pretty observant.

You finished up putting your books back at the bookcase, and you walked back to the desk you- ahem, both of you were sitting at and began packing your bag, whilst catching another sneaky glance at the blonde.

But this time, you noticed something you hadn't noticed about him previously.
You narrow your eyes at the mans physique and appearance.
Despite him being shorter than the average man, he had a strong, and lean build, which hilariously differed from his soft, blushing facial features.
He had a gentle, and calming visage, compared to his eyes, which were filled with ambition and fire.

His skin had deep, and purple scars scattered along it just like his small and dainty freckles.

You wonder how he got those scars.
...

Your eyes widen all the sudden, when his looks correlated to that of an infamous man.

An infamous man who went to your university.

-.. And that's when the realisation hit you...
..The guy who evidently appeared out of thin air in front of you, wasn't any regular student.

...

This was the Ultimate Yakuza.

Your brain ran through more thoughts than it had while studying, and you got shivers down your spine.
This was exactly the type of people Mom always spoke down on.
-..The stories she told you had always frightened you.

Although you recognised his face, you couldn't quite remember the man's name.
He sat in front of you, studying what seemed to be a business textbook.
His small blonde eyebrows furrowed whilst reading, and his small, pink lips curved as he mouthed the words of the chapter to himself.

His small, but calloused and strong hands hold the thick textbook and-..

..-huh did someone say something?..

As you snapped out of your zone, there was a shift in the air.
You heard Soda screaming from the other side of the library, which obviously brought everyone's attention to what was happening:

"DR. DISCOVERY!!"

You turned around to face Soda, and saw Nekomaru and Gundham trying to repress their giggles.
"Too lost in your thoughts??!" Kazuichi smirked, and smugly raised his eyebrows up and down in a suggestive manner, his eyes filled with mischief.

You look at him, slightly lost in what he meant, when he sent an eye signal towards the Yakuza..
You turned around to see what your friend meant and-..

There sat the blonde.
Staring at you with a displeased face.?..-

You feel your face beginning to burn slightly, but not enough for colour to appear, and your eyes dilate.
..-You realise you must've been staring at him while lost in your own mind..

..and he noticed..

The recognition hits you like a truck, and almost immediately pink flushes over your face from embarrassment, no longer feeling only a slight burn in your face, but fire.

You quickly shove the remainder of your supplies in your bag and shamefully run off without saying a word, while hearing roaring laughter coming from the direction of where Soda sat.

As you tread closer to the exit of the library, you could feel tears swelling up inside your eyes.
What doesn't help is the librarian shooting you dirty looks from the sideline.. can't she mind her own business?!

"Mm..not now.!" You whisper and try to swallow the embarrassment.
You had to pinch yourself to make sure you weren't dreaming, and sure enough, you weren't.
You couldn't believe how stupid you must've looked while gaping at the man..-
-..Not only had you been staring in the face of a student you didn't even know the name of, but that student was also a YAKUZA.
..Ugh, and right in front of Kazuichi!
You knew he was never going to let you live that down.

Stripped of any other thought in your noggin, you could really only think of what had just happened.
Out of pure irritance and humility, you hadn't realised you started walking at a faster pace, trying to run away from the building the blonde and Soda sat in.
And everyone else in the library, because Soda just HAD to let everyone know.

As you kept the steady pace, you exited the library and began walking the route to the student accommodation blocks.

The small school apartments ran by a first come first serve principle, meaning people who signed up for the block first got the apartment closer to the school building.
Sadly the waiting list had been extremely long , and you had been assigned to room 492 in block 'D'.
Meaning your dorm, was at the very top of the block..which had no elevators.

After a good minute, you could no longer see the library, and you immediately felt the pressure rise off your shoulders.

"Ugh.. why would I do that?." You whispered to yourself while shaking your head in disappointed, while wiping the remainder of your now dry eyes.
...You couldn't help that the man had caught your eye, and you were just curious!
I mean- how often do you have a *Yakuza* casually sitting at your desk!

-..Thankfully todays weather was refreshing, and it took your mind off of the incident for this second.
There was minimal clouds in the darkening sky, and you could hear crickets chirping in the long grass.
A small breeze tickled your face as you walked to your dormitory.

After about 8 minutes of walking you saw block 'A' begin to fade into your field of view.
You could now see the rest of the blocks, welcoming you in for the night.

"Finally, oh my god.." you said, trying to control your breathing.

You walked up to the block labelled 'D' and began scanning your student card against the card reader at the main door, to enter.
But before the reader finished scanning, you heard a low voice mumble your name from the tall grass near the building.
You decided to take a look around the building..maybe Kazuichi was just playing with you again?
'Ugh now's not the time for pranks Soda!' You thought to yourself before going.
As you started nearing the edge of the building, the perfect hiding spot, you-

"BEEP! card accepted."
You heard the robotic voice of the card reader finally receive the code in your card.

You ran up to the door to open it, and entered..-
-..Afterall this thing is old, and you never know when one day it won't let you in.
Investigating noises can wait for another time, plus if it really was Kazuichi, you certainly didn't want to see him right now!

You went inside of the apartment blocks main lobby, and greeted the blocks concierge, before entered the stairwell.

You looked at the staircase in pain, before beginning your trek to the fifth floor.

-

After walking up the almost never ending stairs, you had reached the top and walked through a thin hallway, about the width of
1.5 of a kitchen cabinet, which lead you to your room.

With the creak of the old door, you entered your domain.
The room wasn't the biggest, but it was cozy.
It consisted of two rooms- a small bathroom, and of course, the main living space.

The bathroom didn't have much to show for it, only a leaky tap that would keep you up at night due to the constant *tap..tap..tap*.., and a half decent toilet.
The room was tiny and took a bit of squeezing to do anything in there.

The showers were kept in a communal space, down at the ground floor- which is also where the kitchen and dining were found.
Unfortunately, despite the communal areas being the most well kept part of the entire building, things still manage to go wrong, whether it be moldy walls near the showers, or fridges that don't work.
..
But at least it's something..?

In the main room of your dorm, there was a small wooden desk with an even smaller desk lamp that doesn't work, a closet with not nearly enough space for months at school, and the main attraction, the bed.
The bed was cramped and had nasty brown-ish stains all over.
It had a single cover and pillow- which wasn't nearly enough for the colder months, but it worked.

Immediately you threw your bag on the messy ground- this time not because it was dirty or broken, it was just covered in your clothes that you hadn't bothered to pick up...
..and you plopped on the squeaky bed, lying on your back and recollecting your thoughts on the day.
Was Kazuichi really trying to be mean, or was it really just a lighthearted joke? Either way, it didn't make you feel too good.

You sigh and stare at the cobwebs and dust gathering around your room.
You definitely feel calmer now that you're in the safety of your room, but it still feels off.
You feel your heartbeats slowly soothe and quiet, your eyes getting somewhat tired.
-...But you don't go to sleep quite yet.

Your thoughts swarm with questions about the Ultimate Yakuza, it almost makes your head hurt.
Sure he didn't seem to be.. too scary, ...but he's a Yakuza! ..you can't trust those people.

...But, why did he sit at your desk? -.. sure.. the library was pretty full at that time of day..

...and your desk was close to the business section, as the books are kept in alphabetical order...( A for Anatomy.. B for Business...)

...and your desk was one of the only ones with more than four seats available.
-...Again, why does no one want to sit with you!?.. whatever.

Okay, yeah, it was just a coincidence.

You almost laugh at yourself for thinking that the blonde man actually wanted something from you.
Besides, you have no affiliations with the Yakuza, so he would have no reason to come up to you, demanding of something.

He simply wanted to study.
And that's all there is to it.

-

After a solid five minutes of sitting idly, you bitterly sighed to yourself and determined it would be best to take a nap..your brain was starting to ache after today.
You chang into your pyjamas, and throw your clothes in the corner of your room, along with the rest of the dispersed clothes on your floor.

-..And without brushing your teeth, you went to bed.

-

It was about 2:40 am when you had woken to loud banging noises at your dorm door.
"Ugh..alright alright! One second..." You shouted, to make sure the person (whom most probably was Soda) had heard you.
You sleepily stood up and stretched, rubbing your eyes in a tired way and toddled up to the door, unlocking it.

The blinding light of the hallway, illuminated your dorm.
You squinted trying to make your eyes focus on the figure.

"Heyyy..um.." you heard a familiar voice awkwardly speak.

Yep. That was Soda alright.

"I just wanted to apologise for earlier haha..I didn't realise you'd be so shy"
Kazuichi laughs in attempt to make the whole interaction less.. uncomfortable, his toothy grin bright and cheery.

It always made you feel better..-

-...Like those times where you had felt extremely overwhelmed and angry at everything, his smile and laugh had always been contagious.
Like when you had been working on a school project that seemed to never end, and he'd come around to your room with your favourite snacks.

But this time it didn't feel the same.
Why? Maybe because of the odd timing, or because you felt down because of *him*.

You grumbled deeply before responding, your nose scrunched slightly.
"..-so you came here at what.. 2 something AM to apologise?? Really?? Good one maestro."
You reply bluntly, and slowly start closing the door before the fuchsia haired man interfered quickly- his large hand holding the door open.
His figure was lean, and decently strong, considering his Ultimate, and interests in mechanics.
You notice the slightly tired look on his face.
His features sharp and mature..-
-...way different from when you used to tease him over his soft cheeks when you were younger, by poking the ample skin around his face.
It was never done with bad intent, Afterall you were only teenagers.
You thought it was cute.

But now he had grown his childish features out.

"I really am ok??!! , Ill make it up for you tomorrow I promise!"
He speaks in an exhausted tone, his sharp canines biting down on his thin lips in anticipation.

You sighed once more before telling him 'ok' and shutting the door, you were tired, and *really* didn't want to deal with this right now.

As you walked back to your bed, hoping for just another ounce of sleep, you heard Soda's muffled voice in the hallway- telling himself off for not apologising to you earlier, which caused you to smirk slightly.

..maybe he really does feel sorry afterall.
