How to be a Good Prince

Summary:

Jesse son of Valon and Prince of Dyfed lived a relatively ordinary life of a Prince in Wales. But one day when he comes across Haou the King of Annwn injured and alone in his domain, his entire life is launched into an entirely new path.

A tale of honour, restraint, battle, compassion, duty and love follows the young Prince as he grows into his title and becomes a worthy ruler of his people. But this path is not without challenges, be they of his court or outside it.

No matter what stands in his way though, the young Prince will take care of his people and protect the ones he loves.

(A First Branch of the Mabinogi AU)

Chapter 1: Arawn, Scene 1 “Sir, if I have done wrong, I will redeem your friendship.”

Summary:

How Prince Jesse met King Haou and agreed to help him

Notes:

Welsh Translation:
dreigiau - dragons
ceffyl dŵr - water horse (mythological creature, though ceffyl means horse)
cennin pedr - draffodils
crwth - a bowed lyre from Wales
cornicyll - a historical name for the Pibgorn, a wind instrument made from reeds
glyn - valley
cŵn - dogs
tad - dad
annwyl - beloved (formal term of endearment, can mean lots of things including "dear")

Fun fact, last names weren't super common in Wales long ago, so people were refered to with titles (king, prince, beautiful) or as the children of others (son of, daughter of).

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Once upon a time, when dreigiau still walked this land and danced with the ceffyl dŵr in the glen, there existed a country of pure wonder and magic. The waves crashed into the shore and sprayed upon the ancient rocks, a push and pull as old as the world itself. The wind would carry words on the wing and guide them to the places they needed to be heard. The mountains reached high into the mighty sky and dared to embrace the clouds, who left them dusted with snowy kisses and cool embraces. The cennin pedr bloomed in their bright bold yellows and oranges and whites, petals like trumpets announcing wizards as they walked among mortals.

The hills stretched far and wide, fading into the forests, who embraced the lakes, who shed their tears into the rivers, which would spit into the earth, sometimes landing above ground and other times sinking below it. The harpists would play their telyn deires to the melodies of the birds and all who heard them were enchanted.

The people of this land were hard working, down to earth and of the earth. They were kind and they were just. They recognised the world for it’s majesty and grace and accepted their small part in making it a good place. Not just for themselves, but for all their fellow creatures.

Later historians would call this land Wales and it’s people the Welsh.

But now it is the kingdom of Dyfed, ruled by a young Prince who is currently dreaming.

Dreaming of his people, dancing around fires to the strings of the crwth and the blow of the cornicyll.

Dreaming of his court in Arberth, of himself sitting at the high table, as the bards and his musicians entertained him.

Dreaming of the forest of Glyn Cuch near his court in Arberth, where the alder and the ash trees reach high into the sky alongside their friends the oak and the aspen.

In Glyn Cuch, a great white stag does battle with a majestic black stag. The two push and pull their rival as hard as they can, hooves digging into the soft earth, barely maintaining their ground.

The black stag shoves his rival backwards, rearing back on his hind legs to slam his front hooves into the white stag’s face.

The white stag falls to the ground, defeated and dead.

The black stag tramples over his enemy, attacking his heart and his neck. The black stag walks away from his rival without bothering to look back.

The forest goes silent as night approaches, as if mourning the great stag’s death.

But when the dawn rises on the white stag, he awakes as if he had only been sleeping. He gets up and walks in the direction his rival went and-

“Your highness?”

Jesse opens his eyes and the dream fades like mist, leaving him no clue to its contents.

He turns his head towards the door.

“Good day to you, sire.” A young boy, Marcel, bows as he speaks. “Your council wishes to see you once you have had breakfast. What shall it be today?”

“Good day to you as well, Marcel.” Jesse sits up, smiling at the boy. “I have a sudden craving for deer meat. Do you know if we have any?”

Marcel stands straight and shakes his head. “Sadly no, your highness.”

Jesse hums, looking out the window.

He watches the sunlight dapple to the east, where Arberth and the forest of Glyn Cuch lie in wait.

“Prepare myself and my friends to travel to Arberth.” Jesse turns back to Marcel. “After breakfast, I wish to go hunting and to procure some deer for them.”

Marcel bows. “Of course your highness.”

With that the boy leaves.

While Jesse, Prince of Dyfed, prepares for his journey.

Jesse was the Prince of Dyfed, one of the Welsh kingdoms. He was the youngest of the king’s children, but was able to prove himself in battle as a Prince worthy of controlling his father’s lands. When territories were divided among his brothers and uncles, Jesse was able to reunite the lands by unifying the family under his banner and making them his vassals. He was a natural born leader, kind to his people and confident in his abilities. Including his ability as a hunter.

With a loud WHISTLE the dogs were off, thundering into Glyn Cuch as if they’d been born for nothing else and Jesse followed them, hot on their heels.

Jesse was a prince and with it came certain expectations. However, in the forest, he is free.

He is as much a part of the forest as the trees he rides past, belongs here as much as the fish in the rivers and will always return to these woods as the birds always do. No matter how far away duty may take the reckless prince, he will always return to his true home in these wild woodlands.

Jesse and his horse Pegasus ride as one through the forest that day, the hounds circling their feet as they look for game. Though the forest brings freedom, the young Prince knows he must be cautious.

He brings his stallion to a stop, the horse giving a neigh as it does so.

Jesse looks around the woods, observing the trees, listening to the water trickle, awaiting a human voice.

But none call out.

He has left his hunting party behind.

Not only that, but the forest is unusually silent. As if every creature is holding its breath, waiting for something to happen, the sunlight barely brushing the forest floor through the fog.

Pegasus chuffs, agitated.

Jesse soothes his horse, patting his neck and hushing him. “It’s alright, boy. We’ll be fine.”

Jesse is a skilled combatant. He may have a poor sense of direction, but if it comes to it, he can defend himself and his friends.

Bark!

Jesse turns to his lead dog, Gelert. He dismounts Pegasus, walking over to the leader of his pack and his faithful friend since boyhood.

Gelert sniffs at a dark stain in the pristine grass. Jesse kneels closer to inspect it.

It's blood. Only just dried.

Jesse stands up, gently petting Gelert’s head. “Can you find where the owner is, boy?”

If it’s a beast, then Jesse can bring it down and use it to feed his court for the evening. If it’s a person, then they may need help from a healer.

Gelert barks and starts sniffing the ground, following the trail.

Jesse grabs Pegasus’ reins and follows on horseback.

Deeper into the dark woods Gelert, Jesse, Pegasus and the other hunting dogs go. The sunlight seems to be sucked out of the forest the deeper they go, finding more bloody stains, each fresher than the last. Whatever had caused the blood splatters was likely still wounded and moving. Jesse feels the urge to rush and he obeys it, urging his horse and his dogs faster. Until finally, they hear it.

A howl of sorrow from a dog in the thick fog.

Jesse rides into the fog, his animals following behind.

“Hello!” Jesse calls out. “Does someone need help?!”

He continues to call out, hearing the sorrowful howling of the dog getting further and further away. He hurries, trying to chase the sound down, trying to find the source of this poor creature’s pain. He rides so fast, he almost misses the howling stop and the forest fall silent. He almost rides into a boulder in the thick fog, a rather careless mistake to make. He almost passes right by it, if the scent of blood hadn’t made him pause.

Jesse waits and listens closely.

Shallow breathing. Shallow human breathing. Someone in pain and possibly in panic.

Jesse walks around the boulder slowly.

His eyes widen at the sight before him.

A pack of hounds stand in protective formation around a man. But this man and his pack do not look like ordinary beings. The hounds are as white as snow, while their ears are as red as blood. They snarl at him as if they will bite him at the slightest provocation. The man wears battle armour the colour of the black night sky, with gold trimmings and sharp spikes. The man stares at him with glowing, bright golden eyes, eyes that betray the pain he must be in since there is a pool of blood below his body. The hounds are strong in the way a hunting knife is strong. The man is beautiful in the way a sword is beautiful.

Jesse is not the smartest man in his court, but he knows a creature of magic when he sees it. And he is currently looking at 8 of them.

“Good day sir, may I help you?” Jesse asks as he dismounts Pegasus.

The dogs snarl and snap at him, barking at him as if to banish him from these lands.

“How funny…” The man glares at him, humourlessly. “A mortal has trespassed onto my sacred grounds and asks if he can help me. Just how high and mighty do you think yourself, Jesse Prince of Dyfed, son of Valon, to tread upon my lands without invitation?”

Jesse knew the dangers of angering the creatures of magic that lived in the land. But even if the being before him knew exactly who he is without Jesse having said as much, he can’t simply ignore someone in pain.

“I apologise for this trespassing. I did not know I was in your lands, but I know I have done you wrong.” Jesse lowers his head in a bow, acknowledging his misdeeds. “But good lord, you are injured and alone. Allow me to redeem your friendship and assist you in your hour of need.”

The dogs snarl at him.

“And I will offer you penance as befitting your rank.” Jesse lifts his head. “Though I will need to know your rank to offer appropriate penance.”

The man glares at him and two of his dogs approach him, supporting his back as he sits up. “I am Haou, King of Annwn, son of Gwyn.”

Jesse barely restrains his shock and in his heart of hearts, he begins to panic.

Haou was known throughout the realm, a legend to tell frightened children before bed and a warning to the Princes of Wales to be careful. For Haou was a mighty warrior and king who resided over the magical lands of Annwn, the Otherworld. Annwn was known to connect to anywhere and nowhere, it is the land of the dead and the fae, it is the land between lands. If one dared to dishonour the king of this place or even one his people, one would suffer significantly.

And the beasts that surround Haou are the Cŵn Annwn. Magical hounds who’s barking grew quieter the closer one became to them. If they were silent in your presence after barking for many times, then that meant you were going to die within the hour. It is said on the nights of the Wild Hunt, Haou leads the Cŵn Annwn through the sky, chasing down the souls of the wicked and cleansing the world of evil.

Jesse knows he is in grave danger. But never was it mentioned in any of the legends that Haou is immortal. Never was it mentioned that he could not die. Never was it mentioned that he could not be injured.

“Good day to you, King Haou.” Jesse falls to a knee and bows his head. “May I redeem your friendship with some medical aid?”

Haou scowls at him something vicious. Then reluctantly nods and whistles.

The Cŵn Annwn part for him.

Jesse takes the bag he keeps on Pegasus’ saddle. He walks briskly, kneeling at the king’s side. He helps the king out of his armour, applying healing creams to Haou’s side where a nasty gash bleeds slowly, likely a sword or spear injury.

“Who could have wounded you like this?” Jesse asks.

As far as he’s aware, Annwn is a land of plenty, where it’s people need not go to war for resources. Could a mortal have invaded the realm and injured it’s king?

Haou snarls. “A rival in Annwn. Adrian the Upstart, son of Gecko, has conquered half of my lands and calls himself the King of Annwn. We have fought many times and it has caused much strife for my people. So we agreed to settle this with a one to one battle.”

Considering the wound in Haou’s side, it would appear the true King of Annwn lost that battle.

“I killed him with my very own sword. He bled to death before my eyes after many blows.” Haou spits and hisses. “And yet, the day afterwards he came to fight me just as strong as before. He challenged me to another battle one to one in a year’s time and I accepted.”

“How can you defeat a man who can not be killed?” Jesse asks.

Is it possible the immortality only works under certain conditions? If he will always rise from the grave, then is it best to be rid of the body once it has been slain?

Haou smirks. “He can be killed, if he is struck with a single, fatal blow. My mistake was to attack him more than once after his death was assured.”

Jesse nods as he applies the bandages. It seems the wound did not take any of Haou’s organs, if a being like him has them. That’s a good start.

Haou shifts his weight, moving to stand even as his dogs whine in concern.

“You’re too injured to walk, your majesty.” Jesse holds him, offering the king support.

Haou snarls at him. “And you think I should leave my people undefended? The only reason the coward Adrian would corner me as he has would be so he could launch an assault on my kingdom.”

“I’m not saying that you should bow to him, but you can not help them as you are right now!” Jesse holds him still. “If you attempt to fight while injured like this, you’ll only get yourself killed and you’re no good to your people dead.”

The Cŵn Annwn snarl and snap at him angrily.

Jesse’s own hounds growl in defence.

Haou stops trying to move.

Jesse looks at him.

Haou is staring at him intently, looking him up and down as if assessing him.

Jesse gulps, trying to ignore his heating cheeks.

Haou finally looks him in the eye. “Then you will go in my place.”

Jesse blinks. “Pardon, my lord?”

Haou rolls his eyes and shrugs Jesse’s hands off him. The Cŵn Annwn rally around him, supporting his weight.

“I am the King of Annwn. I have the highest power of shapeshifting, second only to my soulmate and co-monarch.” Haou’s body begins to glow, a golden outline taking over it. “It would be no difficulty for me to swap our appearances for a year and a day.”

Jesse’s eyes widen as he watches balls of light float from the king, like stars in the night sky, like sparks of a campfire.

“You will do penance by ruling my lands in my stead for a year and a day, to battle Adrian in my place. Once you have rid me of his oppression, you will redeem my friendship.” Haou calls out, his words echoing in the forest. “For that year and a day, you will live a life of plenty. The most beautiful being in the world will sleep with you every night and the bravest woman in the world will be your daughter and commander. You will relish in good company and good food. Do you accept?”

Jesse thinks hard on the king’s offer, remembering the careful way the legends spoke of his tongue. “This is a truly great opportunity, your majesty. But what of my lands? Who shall care for my people if I care for yours?”

Haou rolls his eyes. “I am not that thoughtless, Prince of Dyfed. I will rule your lands and care for your people in your stead while I heal.”

Jesse nods. “Very well then. I accept.”

Haou offers Jesse his right hand.

Jesse takes it with his right hand.

With a handshake, the gold encircling Haou begins to encircle Jesse. The glamour is cast strong and true, and when Jesse opens his eyes, his own face stares back at him. His blue hair is spiked up high while his emerald eyes stare back at him with a narrowed frown of pain. His dark brown hunting cloak covers his blue tunic tied together with a belt, while brown pants and his riding boots are already tainted with mud from the forest.

“Page

A perfect mirror image.

“It is done.” The being in his shape says.

The being in Haou’s shape nods. “I will do my best, your majesty. But how will I know how to behave around your people, so as not to arouse suspicion?”

One of the Cŵn Annwn steps towards him. “We will guide you.”

Jesse’s eyes widen.

For as close as he is to his beloved hunting dogs and horses, never did he imagine he would hear them speak. But the Cŵn Annwn are the Hounds of the Otherworld. Jesse should have suspected that they would not be as ordinary as his own beasts.

“Only you will hear their thoughts and voices.” Haou tells him. “Now, fetch my horse and mount Jesse upon it.”

Two of the Cŵn Annwn run off into the misty forest.

“In the meantime, wear my armour.” Haou instructs him.

Jesse nods and begins to place the armour on his body, shocked at how well it fits him. He noticed his hands are a bit paler; has his entire body shifted to resemble Haou’s in every single way?

By the time Jesse is adorned in the armour, the two Cŵn Annwn return with Haou’s dark horse. Jesse instructs Pegasus and Gelert to guide Haou to his people, while Haou instructs the Cŵn Annwn to guide Jesse to his court.

With that, the two are on their way.

Jesse rides Haou's noble mare, Leviathan, through the forest as fast as he can. The Cŵn Annwn tell Jesse their names and how Haou acts around his people as they run. They tell him of Haou's actions in combat, in the hopes that Jesse will not improperly mimic Haou when they reach the battlefield.

Luckily, they arrive just in time.

Two great armies threaten to march on each other, only five people in all on horseback.

Jesse drives Leviathan faster.

One of the riders notices him first, a creature split down the middle who rolls their eyes. "Took you long enough, Haou."

Jesse can do nothing but stare in awe at the being.

An eye of emerald green and an eye of amber orange reside in a beautiful face of purple skin, green lips and pointed fangs. White hair frames the right side of their face while purple hair frames the left side. Clawed black and brown wings sprout from their back while their body is adorned in black fabrics criss-crossing over their skin while a dragon’s tail circles behind them. The being is beautiful in the way a shield is beautiful.

"That is Yubel, child of Light And Darkness Dragon. Haou's annwyl." Baou, the leader of the  Cŵn Annwn, adds. "They are fiercely loyal to Haou and the greatest shapeshifter in Annwn."

Another rider turns and waves, smiling wide. "Tad!"

Jesse's eyes widen at the sight of the young woman who called out to Haou.

Brown wide eyes with a ring of golden in the centre stare back at him, while brown and ginger hair is held together with an intricate braid framing her tanned face. She wears a red tunic with armour across her chest, with black trousers and thick brown riding boots.

Of all the women he'd ever seen, none could be compared to this young woman in beauty or power. Her beauty is the sword and the shield. The horse and the rider. The grace of battle and the brutality of words.

This woman is everything.

"That's Haou's daughter, Yuuna." Baou tells him. "She's a mighty warrior and quite the prankster."

Jesse nods and tries to rid himself of his surely love struck face. There is a battle to prevent.

The troops call out behind them, cheering.

"King Haou has returned!"

"Now we can march on the coward Adrian!"

"Long live the king!"

Jesse brings Leviathan to a stop when he meets the riders. He remembers the disdainful look on Haou's face when speaking of Adrian.

"Adrian." Jesse calls out.

Even his voice sounds like Haou's.

A young man in a green robe with red hair turns to him upon his grey mare, scowling.

"Did we not agree to settle this in single combat a year from tomorrow?" Jesse scowls at him. "What sort of king breaks his word?"

Adrian's scowl deepens.

Whispering breaks out among both sides of the fight, hissing and spitting.

The other rider on Adrian's side trots forward, a woman with short black hair and a green cloak. "My King, Haou has a point. If you go back on your word, you will lose the legitimacy to rule. You will be called oath-breaker !"

"That's Echo, daughter of Uthyr, Adrian's partner." Baou snarls at her. "She's frankly the only reason his army is intact."

Jesse gives a subtle nod.

The whispering grows louder, turning to shouts.

Adrian holds up his hand, silencing both armies.

Jesse waits.

Adrian looks him in the eye. "King Haou, we shall meet at the ford, a year from tomorrow. I will slay you there once and for all."

Jesse smirks. "You're welcome to try."

Adrian scowls at him more and turns around, his troops following behind. Haou's army cheers and shouts.

Jesse lets out a quiet sigh, relieved to have avoided any unnecessary bloodshed.

"My King."

Now comes the hard part. Jesse hopes his acting works.

Jesse turns around towards Yubel and Yuuna.

Yubel hums. “Shall we return to the court now that this matter is settled?”

Jesse nods. “Indeed we shall.” He addresses Haou’s men. “Let us go home and celebrate! Victory was ours today and no lives were lost!”

Yuuna cheers, throwing up her sword. “Good plan, Tad! Long live the king!”

“LONG LIVE THE KING!” The army cheers, weapons raised high.

With that, they travel back to the court, Jesse leading the charge with Yubel and Yuuna at his side, the Cŵn Annwn keeping pace just about.

“What took you so long while you were hunting, Tad?” Yuuna pushes her horse a little harder, coming next to Jesse.

Baou barks. “Tell Yuuna nothing of being injured by Adrian. Think of something believable!”

Like what? ” Jesse thinks but doesn’t say. He’s in the magical realm of Annwn, he’s not sure what would count as believable. Not to mention he doesn’t know Haou that well.

But he can’t let the silence go on.

“I was following a strange stag. It’s coat was of the purest white, as if it were made of snow. I thought I could catch it, but it moved so swiftly, none of my dogs could follow it.” Jesse says, as if the words were summoned from a dream. “When I realised the chase was pointless, I hurried to return and when I heard of his invasion, I rushed to you. I hadn’t know that Adrian would attempt to invade the land while I was out finding meat for my people.”

Yuuna smiles, seeming to believe him. “It sounds exciting! I bet me and Neos would’ve caught it, right boy?”

She pats her horse’s neck, gently nuzzling him.

Jesse’s heart swells just a bit.

Most women he knows back in Dyfed don’t dare to be so open with their emotions like this. Even his mother and sisters were very stone faced, used to hiding their fears and feelings behind walls of iron, nerves of steel and tongues of blades. Jesse only started to develop his own mask and quick tongue when he got better at understanding the people in his court.

Yet Yuuna seems unguarded, open and honest in a way he only sees in the youngest of the children in his court or some of his citizens whenever he’s mistaken for a peasant like them. She almost feels innocent, if not for the flash of her teeth and her comfort with the blade.

It’s a remarkable act of bravery. Her honesty is refreshing.

“A stag like that would normally only be seen in winter.” Yubel hums. “How strange that one appeared in summer.”

Shit. Jesse didn’t know that.

Clearly Yubel is very intelligent, on top of being one of the most beautiful people he’s ever seen. That is one of the most dangerous combinations within the royal courts.

“Maybe it’s because of Adrian taking our land!” Yuuna pouts, slamming her fist into her palm. “He’s thrown the whole balance of Annwn out of wack by toying with magic he knows nothing of! It makes me angry!”

Jesse watches her in awe, just a bit more captivated by her openness.

He can see why Haou treasures her so much. She’s a wonderful person.

“We’re here!” Yubel calls out.

Jesse turns to the front. His eyes widen.

Never before has he seen a castle this grand and tall, with strong stone walls and tall rock towers that look over the entire land. A small pool of water surrounds the front of the castle, which sits upon a steep hill covered in some carefully hidden traps and pitfalls.

It is said that Annwn is a land of great riches and greater wonders, where magic can make anything a reality. Though Jesse is a Prince, never has he seen a castle this grand.

It’s a truly magnificent sight.

Baou barks at his feet. “Be ready and pay attention. This is where it gets tricky.”

Jesse nods and listens carefully.

By the time feasting and drinking and storytelling has finished, Jesse is exhausted. He allows the grooms to undress him and he follows Yubel wherever they may lead. It’s been a long day.

“Tired, my King?” Yubel teases him, smirking playfully.

Jesse feels his face burn, but he can’t lie anymore than he already has. “Truly, I am.”

“You have been up since dawn.” Yubel rolls their eyes, turning back around. “I’ll make sure I tire you out fully.”

Jesse nearly trips over his own feet.

Does…

Does Yubel intend to be intimate with him?!

“You will have the most beautiful being in the world to sleep with every night.”

Sure Haou said that, but Jesse didn’t think that it’d happen! And it’s hardly fair on Yubel for them to seduce him when he’s not their lover.

No, no, Jesse won’t do that. He’d rather not hurt Yubel like that.

Jesse follows Yubel into a room and takes a quick glance around it. It has a fireplace and a bed that is big enough for at least three people.

He yawns, unable to contain himself.

He really is exhausted.

Jesse grabs the blanket, getting into the bed on one side while Yubel climbs in on the other. He lays down, his head on the pillow and his back to them.

He’s asleep before he has any more time to worry about being intimate with them.

CLANG!

Jesse presses hard against his opponent, sword shaking in his grasp.

Yuuna grins viciously across from him, pressing against his sword with her own.

They’re at a stalemate, evenly matched.

Then Yuuna roars, forcing him back, drawing her sword back to put more force into it, knocking her blade against his own.

Jesse’s sword goes flying out of his hand and he stands there, dumbstruck.

Yuuna presses the tip of her blade just against his throat, under his chin, grinning cockily. “Surrender?”

Jesse gulps heavily, trying hard not to lose his calm. “I surrender.”

Yuuna removes her blade, sheathing her sword calmly.

Then she cheers, throwing her fists up and jumping on the spot. “I DID IT! I FINALLY BEAT TAD!”

She starts dancing on the spot, wild and free, fearless and open, reckless and untamed.

Jesse can do nothing but watch her, falling a little bit in love as he does so.

Yuuna really is amazing.

“I can’t believe it!” Yuuna turns to him, running over and hugging him tightly. “I did it!”

Jesse smiles, helpless but to follow her enthusiasm, reaching out to pet her head. “You did good, little Princess. I’m proud of you.”

Yuuna giggles at him. “Thanks Tad! What next?!”

Jesse hums, thinking. “You have archery training next, don’t you?”

Yuuna nods, still smiling. “Yeah, it’s so much fun!”

Jesse would agree with her if he’s honest. “Then you better head to the archery field. I will head to the court.”

He has a few meetings with Haou’s advisors about a few important things. Namely the unrest at the border Adrian has created through Annwn.

“Right, good luck Tad!” Yuuna smiles at him, then runs off, calling over her shoulder. “I love you!”

Jesse is helpless but to wave his hand at her, smiling. “I love you too.”

The more time he spends with her, the less it feels like a line an actor says on cue.

And the more it feels like the honest truth.

Jesse hands the next parcel of food to his citizens. “Here.”

They bow low to him. “Thank you, King Haou.”

Jesse nods and grabs the next parcel for the next person.

This village was recently attacked and raided by Adrian’s forces. His soldiers have been working to rebuild the burned buildings. His court is finding the finances to buy medicine for the villagers. And Jesse is doing what little he can, putting food in the hands of his people himself.

“Should the King of Annwn really demean himself like this?” Asks the village’s representative, Freed, cautiously staring at him.

Jesse shakes his head. “Ensuring my people are fed is one of my basic duties. It’s not demeaning, but an honour to ensure my people are cared for.”

It would be better of course if he didn’t have to do this. If the village was still in one piece, safe and sound without their food stolen and their lives in ruins, Jesse wouldn’t have to do this. He failed by not protecting them, so now he must do what he can for them.

Freed hums and smiles. “You are a kind ruler, King Haou.”

Baou barks in approval. “That’s why I followed him!”

Jesse smiles.

The more he plays Haou’s role, the more he learns about the King and how much his people love and value him. Jesse only hopes he’ll be able to apply what he’s learned well once he returns to Dyfed and reclaims his throne.

For now, he is happy he got to learn so much. He wants to see this kingdom flourish as much as he wants his own realm to thrive.

He’ll ensure that Adrian’s forces will be defeated, one way or another.

Jesse lays down, sore and aching from the long day of training the troops. He’s going to fall asleep any second now.

“Haou~” Yubel sings softly, resting their hand on his back. “You awake, handsome?”

Jesse feels a blush crawl up his face, not sure how he’s meant to react.

“Of course you are.” Yubel giggles, still a little drunk from the party earlier.

Jesse isn't sure what to do.

"We haven't been this chase since we were children." Yubel presses their body against his back.

Jesse shivers as he feels the soft curves and hard edges digging into him.

"You getting shy on me, my King?" Yubel softly bites his ear.

Jesse gasps, helpless.

Yubel growls, biting harder.

Jesse takes a few shuddering breaths, trying to calm down.

"The most beautiful being in the world will sleep with you every night."

Even if Haou said it was okay, Yubel doesn't know he's not Haou. He can't.

"I…" Jesse takes a final deep breath. "Not tonight. Sorry."

Yubel goes still behind him.

Jesse holds his breath.

Yubel releases his ear. "And why not?"

Jesse has never wanted to be invisible before but now would be a good time to have that power.

"I'm just, sore." Jesse admits. "I don't think I will be able to treat you properly, my soulmate."

It's a paltry excuse. But it's all he's got.

Yubel hums. "I could still treat you properly."

Jesse shakes his head.

Yubel is quiet.

Then they sigh. "Very well then, my King."

He hears Yubel turn away from him.

Jesse doesn't sleep until he hears Yubel snore.

Jesse holds the circular wooden disk with a smile. “Ready?”

The Cŵn Annwn wag their tails excitedly, eager for the game to begin.

Jesse throws as hard as he can. “FETCH!”

The dogs tear after the disk like they would a bird they were desperate to catch.

Jesse smiles as he watches them run.

“Tad!”

Jesse turns as Yuuna runs up to him. “Hello Yuuna.”

“Haha, you look like you’re having fun.” Yuuna smiles as she comes to a stop next to him. “It’s not often I get to see you relax. It’s nice to see you having fun too.”

Jesse stiffens up. Oh no. Has she seen through his acting?

“You’ve been acting a little differently since we last saw Adrian.” Yuuna scowls at the sky, angry at the mention of the false king’s name. Then she turns to face him, a look of concern adoring her face. “Is everything okay Tad?”

Jesse isn’t sure what to say. He’s been lying a lot, something he’s not fond of and not talented in. He’s not sure what he can say.

Then Baou tackles Yuuna to the ground.

Yuuna yelps and laughs as her back hits the ground and she gets attacked with doggy kisses. “Baou stop, hahaha, stop that tickles, hahahahaha, silly doggy!”

Jesse lets out the breath he’d been holding.

That was too close for comfort.

This is how the young Jesse Prince of Dyfed disguised as King Haou of Annwn spent his year in that realm. He defended the borders, carefully watched the court, and learned all he could.

Until finally the day arrived.

Chapter Text

Jesse feels the air change in the castle as the fateful day arrives.

Everyone is more anxious. Yubel bites into their food more fiercely. Yuuna barely touches her own plate. The staff whisper rather than speak, as if afraid of breaking the careful atmosphere.

Jesse does his best to not be affected by everyone’s nerves. He has to convey strength. He has to be Haou. He has to lead his people to victory.

“Are you ready, my King?” Zure says after breakfast.

Jesse nods.

With that, they’re off.

99 of Haou’s best men, along with Yubel, Yuuna and Jesse, travel through Annwn that day, trying to stay calm as they approach the river where he is fated to fight Adrian. Leviathan huffs under his hands so Jesse does his best to soothe her.

Baou barks. “Time for your last performance, Jesse. Can you handle this?”

Jesse nods.

Baou nods. “Good. Now play it right, King Haou.”

Jesse smiles at him.

When this battle ends, Jesse will have to thank Baou and the other Cŵn Annwn properly. He never would’ve stayed in character for the entire year if they hadn’t been there to help him learn everything he needs to know about Haou.

“Tad?”

Jesse turns his head towards Yuuna. “What is it?”

Yuuna stares up at him. “Be careful today, okay?”

Jesse smiles at her. “Of course I will, little Princess.”

Yuuna smiles at him. “Okay then, I believe in you!”

Jesse turns back to the front.

“Haou.”

Jesse turns his head towards Yubel. “Yes, soulmate?”

Yubel stares at him. “You better win today.”

Jesse nods. “You know I will.”

He knows Adrian’s weakness now, thanks to Haou.

Jesse stares back to the front and they keep marching.

Eventually, they come across the river, where the battle will begin.

On the other side of the river bank, at least 99 of Adrian’s own forces stand there. In the middle of the water is a small patch of mostly dry grass, like an island. Adrian stands there, sword at his hip and a huge shield attached to his left arm.

Jesse dismounts Leviathan, giving her his last treat, only his sword on his hip.

“Win this, Tad.” Yuuna whispers, holding the reins tighter.

Yubel puts one hand on her shoulder. “He will, Yuuna.”

Jesse nods.

“You will win this, Jesse.” Baou barks at him.

Zure hums. “Whenever you are ready, my King.”

Jesse walks across the water, ignoring how it sinks into his boots.

After everything Adrian has done over the past year, the past several years, to Annwn’s people and Haou’s friends and family, Jesse has to defeat him right here, right now.

Jesse reaches the island, the clouds passing overhead, blanketing them in mild darkness at the height of the sun’s power.

Adrian smirks. “I’ll give you one last chance, Haou. Surrender and grant me the title King of Annwn.”

“You’re crazy if you think I’ll ever allow a man like you to become the king, Adrian.” Jesse smirks back.

The clouds shift, the light sputters and suddenly, Jesse and Adrian’s shadows move, crossing one another. And where their shadows overlap, a figure of pure darkness rises out as a being of pure light descends. The two creatures take each others’ hands, spin three times, then hold each other close, merging into one being.

The creature that emerges has the beauty of all the sky in their form and figure. The light of a thousand starts on a black night. The bright silver lining of the sun through the clouds.

Light And Darkness Dragon spreads their wings and everyone bows to them, except Yubel.

“Rise.” The most ancient of Annwn’s creatures calls out.

Everyone stands.

“Today is a battle between two kings. Each lays claims to the others’ lands, but they have chosen to invoke the right of Single Combat to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.” Light And Darkness Dragon calls out. “Therefore, no one here is permitted to interfere. You are all only witnesses. They will settle this disagreement with their swords.”

Jesse and Adrian draw their blades.

“When this battle ends, there will be only one King of Annwn.” Light And Darkness Dragon creates a ball of light and dark energies in their claws. “When I drop this ball and it lands on the floor, the battle will begin. Are you ready?”

“Yes.” Jesse and Adrian reply.

“Then may the best man win.” Light And Darkness Dragon releases the ball.

Jesse and Adrian watch it carefully.

The ball hits the ground and bursts, the light surrounding Adrian and the darkness surrounding Jesse.

“BEGIN!”

Jesse rushes forward, but Adrian meets him in the middle, their blades clashing and dispelling the energy. They jump back from each other, swinging their blades hard. They crash like thunder and strike like the tide, but they aren’t able to get to one another.

Adrian is bigger and stronger, from fighting to take over all of Annwn for the past few years. It’s a difficult battle for the young Prince of Dyfed, who has only been in wars with his own family, but he refuses to give up.

Adrian plays dirty, but Jesse is quicker than the challenger. Mainly because Adrian can hardly move with his giant shield and Jesse has no shield to speak of weighing on him.

“You must wait until he falters and take him down with a single, fatal blow.”

Those were Haou’s words and Jesse did all he could to stick to them, until finally-

Adrian’s shield and sword touch the ground, offering him support.

He’s faltering.

Jesse roars, his sword rising above his head as he jumps, bringing it down across Adrian’s shield, splitting it in half and cutting Adrian across his chest, landing that single, fatal blow.

Adrian’s back hits the grass and he gasps, blood pooling from his lips.

Jesse stands back, observing.

Their allies are silent.

Adrian coughs. “King Haou, what right do you have to my death? I was not trying to steal from you. But I ask that if you have any soul at all, you’ll free a dying man of his final pains.”

Jesse grits his teeth as he stares at Adrian.

How dare this man speak such nonsense after tormenting Haou’s people for years?!

He draws his sword-

Adrian smiles.

-and stabs it into the ground by Adrian’s head, not harming a single hair upon it.

“Adrian, I may one day regret what I have done here. But you will have to ask another for that mercy.” Jesse steps away from Adrian. “You have fought well and I will not do battle with you again. Rest in peace.”

Adrian stares at him.

A flicker of confusion on his face.

Then he smiles. “Of course, your highness.”

Jesse’s eyes widen.

‘Your highness’ is used for a prince. Adrian is not meant to know he’s a Prince, not a King.

Adrian tilts his head back, calling out. “My friends, take me away. For my death is now certain.”

Echo nods, tears streaming from her eyes as she turns to some of her allies. Two men ride their horses across the river and prepare a stretcher, gently lifting their fallen lord upon it.

Jesse walks over to Light And Darkness Dragon.

He takes a knee before them, pressing his fist to the ground and bowing his head. “Mighty Light And Darkness Dragon I, Haou son of Gwyn, have defeated my enemy, Adrian son of Gecko.” He lifts his head. “I am now the rightful king of Annwn.”

Light And Darkness Dragon smiles at him and nods their head. “Well said, King Haou of Annwn.” They look over everyone. “I give you the one true king of Annwn, Haou son of Gwyn!”

Haou’s family and soldiers cry out in joy, cheering him on and applauding his work.

Jesse smiles and turns to Adrian’s army.

He watches the soldiers look carefully among themselves.

He watches Echo sob as silently as she can manage, eyes wide.

Jesse walks across the stream, approaching Echo on her horse without his own.

It’s a risky move. But Jesse did not become a good Prince without taking risks.

Echo dries her tears, looking down at him. “Why approach me, King Haou?”

“To ask for your help, Lady Echo.” Jesse calls out. “You are the leader of Adrian’s forces and his closet companion. I am sorry to have taken him from you.” He smiles. “But if you will offer me your cooperation, I will offer you my friendship.”

Echo stares at him as if he is mad. “And if should I betray you?”

Jesse continues to smile. “Then I shall defeat you. But it would be a shame to lose someone as talented as you.” He offers his hand. “Will you become one of my allies and help me unite Annwn once again?”

New tears spring from Echo’s eyes.

Jesse waits, hand still offered.

Echo ducks her head and nods, taking his hand. “My King, we shall all follow you. For there is no other king of Annwn than you.”

“Long live the King!” Adrian’s former forces call out. “Long live King Haou!”

Soon the two armies are united in harmony over their loyalty to King Haou son of Gwyn.

Jesse smiles as the ache of battle settles into his bones.

He kept his promise.

Haou’s main hall is packed with the celebrating nobles and soldiers from both sides. Families unite and new treaties are signed to further the peace between the two sides. It’s a truly beautiful party, as every feast in Annwn has been since the first day.

Jesse takes it in silently, happy to observe it all.

“You’re unusually quiet, Haou.” Yubel remarks sitting at his side.

Jesse turns to them. “Forgive me, soulmate. I am merely tired.”

Yubel rolls their eyes and sips from their goblet. “When are you not, these days?”

Jesse laughs because what else can he say to that?

“More gwin, your majesty?” Zure offers.

Jesse stands up, waving him off. “No thank you, Zure. I think I will step out for a few moments.”

He does need to meet Haou by the stone where they first met.

Zure nods. “Very well then.”

Jesse walks away from the table, wandering the hall. Room is made for him as he travels, appearing to be the perfect king. It doesn’t take him long to find who he wants to see off.

Yuuna is excitedly examining Echo’s sword, lavishing her with praise as her cheeks turn pink. “Your sword really is amazing, it’s strong but light and-”

“Yuuna.” Jesse calls out.

Yuuna turns to him in surprise, then smiles. “Yeah Tad?”

“Enjoying the party?” Jesse asks, stepping closer.

Yuuna nods, beaming. “Yep! Apparently lots of people are getting engaged now that the war is over.”

That reminds Jesse. Yuuna isn’t married or engaged to anyone else. It’s likely the requests will come in soon. Jesse is surprised, as many of his siblings were engaged when they were quite young, including himself. The only reason he escaped his engagement was because he convinced his father to let him be a Prince rather than a bride.

“And how do you feel about that?” Jesse asks. “Would you ever seek an engagement for yourself?”

Yuuna blinks at him.

Then she bursts out into laughter. “No way!”

A small part of Jesse’s heart cracks at that. Then he remembers the role he’s playing.

“Well, it may happen one day. Just know that I will support you and hold you in my heart always.” Jesse says, reaching out to squeeze Yuuna’s shoulder, being honest with her. “I will treasure you even after all the air has left my lungs.”

Yuuna’s smile softens. She jumps, wrapping her arms around him and Jesse hugs her back just as tightly.

“I love you Tad.” Yuuna hugs him tighter. “I’m glad you’re safe.”

“I am too.” Jesse hugs her tighter. “I love you, Yuuna.”

He wishes he could say this to her without his disguise. Allow her to know who he really is when he isn’t playing a role. Maybe learn how she would feel about him if he wasn’t pretending to be her father.

But if she doesn’t want romance, then Jesse will respect that. Besides, it’s unlikely he’ll return to Annwn until his death.

They pull apart, Yuuna’s feet touching the ground. “So you going out?”

“Yes. I wanted to walk Baou in the evening air, alone.” Jesse winks at her. “Keep our guests entertained while I slip away, won’t you?”

Yuuna makes two fists. “Sure will, Tad!” Then she turns to Echo. “Come on! Let’s have a friendly Duel, put on a show for the crowd!”

“That sounds agreeable.” Echo stands up, placing her metal sword down and reaching for two wooden ones against the wall.

Echo tosses Yuuna one of the wooden swords and she catches it with a smirk.

Jesse smiles and turns away, walking over to the door where Baou and Leviathan are outside.

“Let’s get you home, before you’re missed Jesse.” Baou barks.

Jesse nods and climbs aboard Leviathan. “Let’s go.”

With that, they ride off into the night, listening to the clashing of wooden swords and cheering of drunken soldiers.

Jesse shall never forget his time in Annwn.

Though Jesse rides slowly, taking in the memories of this magical place, in no time at all, he arrives at the clearing where he first met Haou all those years ago.

A mirror image of himself is waiting there, Pegasus and Gelert at his side.

“You defeated Adrian?” Haou calls out, tilting his head back.

Jesse nods as he dismounts Leviathan. “I have. Your lands are united once again under your banner, Haou King of Annwn.”

Haou stares at him.

Then he smiles. “You have done well and redeemed my friendship, Jesse Prince of Dyfed.”

With a shake of their hands, their bodies return to their original forms. Jesse smiles as he gazes upon his own hands and his own body, not perfect but a place he’s learned to call home.

“Now go and see how I have repaid your kindness.” Haou orders.

Jesse nods. He embraces Pegasus and Gelert, brushing and petting his two closest companions.

Then he mounts Pegasus and rides for Arberth…

While Haou rides for his own court, healed and ready to return as Annwn’s one true King.

Chapter Text

Haou allows the tension to bleed from his body as he finally enters the castle.

After a year pretending to be an inexperienced Prince, it's nice to finally live as the King he was born to be. But more importantly than that, it's good to be home.

“Tad!”

Haou’s heart swells with affection as his merch runs over to him, just as strong and as fierce as ever.

“I kept the guests entertained while you were out, just like you asked.” Yuuna giggles, coming to a stop in front of him. “How was the walk?”

Haou smiles.

Then he reaches out to embrace her, hugging her tightly to his chest.

It’s been far too long since he last saw her. He’s glad she was in good hands while he was away.

“Tad?” Yuuna blinks, looking up at him while hugging him back. “Everything okay?”

Haou nods and kisses her forehead. “Everything is perfect, cariad.”

He’s back where he belongs, surrounded by the people he loves the most and his throne has been restored.

Everything is perfect.

That is how Haou spends the night, reuniting with his people, though of course, they have not missed him. Between them he listens to Baou tell him of any important information he needs to know about anything that has changed while he’s been away; marriages, deaths, relations and other such issues.

It’s a relief to finally return to the bedchamber with his soulmate, his love, his better half.

Haou turns to Yubel. "So, how do you want me, Rosethorn?"

He's missed this.

Yubel pauses, glancing at him over their shoulder with a truly vicious glare.

Haou shivers under the pressure.

He’s so missed this.

“I want you to be honest with me, Sol Regia.” Yubel purrs.

Haou missed hearing that name, God, it feels like a weight has brought him back down to where he needs to be.

Yubel stalks towards him, looking utterly furious and ravishing

Right here with his Rosethorn.

Haou backs up against the wall, Yubel towering over him.

This is where he was meant to be.

Yubel glances down, hissing. “I want you to tell me where the fuck you’ve been for the past year.”

Haou blinks.

Blinks again.

“Pardon?” Haou asks.

“Did you really think…” Yubel leans closer to him. “You could leave some poor imitation in our home, in our bed , and I would not notice?”

Haou’s eyes widen as leans back against the wall.

Yubel cages him in with both their arms, spreading their wings and glaring down at him with their three eyes shining bright.

“Now tell me the truth .” Yubel snarls. “Or I’ll remind you exactly why my teulu gets to choose who rules Annwn.”

Haou is well aware of the powers those descended from the Light And Darkness Dragon have. He’s been on the receiving end of those powers for most of his life.

And even if Yubel wasn’t threatening him, Haou has never kept secrets from them.

“I was injured.” Haou explains.

Yubel’s mouth drops open in shock. “What?”

“While I was out hunting, Adrian had come back from the dead to attack me. He left me in the woods to bleed to death.” Haou continues. “A mortal found me and gave me medical attention. He apologised for trespassing, but wouldn’t let me go battle Adrian. So we formed an agreement. I swapped our appearances for a year and a day so we would not be missed in our respective realms.”

Yubel’s eyes slowly fade, the glow leaving them. They lower their wings, letting the starlight and moonshine frame their body in the most beautiful way.

“I should’ve told you though, or at least had Baou mention it.” Haou lowers his head in apology. “I’m sorry, my heated heart.”

He waits to hear what they’ll have to say in return.

“You are a fool, my gentle soul.”

He lifts his head.

Yubel reaches out, grazing their claws along his cheek lovingly. “If you’d just told me, I would have murdered Adrian myself.”

“I don’t doubt it.” Haou smiles, leaning into their touch. “But he could only be killed with a single fatal blow and you, my love, are not known for your restraint.”

“Excellent. Then I’d have gotten to torture him for eternity instead of giving him the mercy of death.” Yubel smirks, all fangs and claws and all that Haou loves.

He missed them so very much.

But one thing is on his mind.

“How did you know it wasn’t me?” Haou places his hand atop theirs. “Was there a flaw in my illusion?”

Yubel shakes their head, leaning a bit closer. “No, your illusion was perfect as always. It was his acting that couldn’t keep up.”

Haou closes his eyes, basking in Yubel’s touch and scent. “What tipped you offer?”

Yubel leans closer, whispering in his ear like a secret. “He never called me Rosethorn.”

Haou’s eyes open. “...oh.”

Of course. How could he have missed such a vital thing?

“Now….” Yubel purrs.

Thorny vines grab him and pick him up, throwing him on top of their bed. Haou gasps as they hold him tight, pulling him until he has no choice but to lay there and take it.

Yubel stands above him, looking down their nose at him. “It has been an entire year since I last laid eyes on your body, let alone touched it.” They reach out, gently undoing the buttons on his clothes. “Your little mimic wouldn’t even look at me in this bed, let alone let me touch him.”

Haou blinks. “What?”

“I could practically hear his little thoughts screaming how he couldn’t let himself make love to someone who wasn’t aware of who he was.” Yubel smirks. “I suppose you chose well for an honourable little mimic.”

Haou had no idea that Jesse would do that for him.

“Then we should thank him properly.” Haou tries to sit up-

Only for Yubel to push him back down. “The mortal can wait. Because I assure you, by morning you will not be walking away from me again any time soon, Sol Regia.”

Their eyes glow bright, the wind picking up, all of Annwn’s magic reacting to it’s rightful heir.

Haou nods. “Understood, Rosethorn.”

He doesn't need to be anywhere else. He is exactly where he belongs.

Jesse lets out a sigh of relief when he finally returns to his court in Arberth.

He’s had many valuable experiences and learned a lot about leadership and loyalty and work while living in Annwn as Haou, but he’s happy to be back in his own court with his own people.

One of his advisors, Sapphire, greets him. “Oh, welcome back your highness! How was the ride?”

Jesse smiles. “It was very inspiring. Call a meeting as soon as possible.”

Sapphire blinks in confusion. “Milord?”

Jesse only widens his smile.

Soon his court is in one of their meeting rooms, seated around the round table.

“I have gathered you all here today to ask you an important question.” Jesse says. “I want to know what you all have to say about the way I have ruled for the past year.”

His court look at one another, waiting for the first person to speak.

Sapphire raises a hand. “You have been incredibly wise this year.”

“You’ve been kind and quite polite.” Amber adds.

“You’ve shared your wealth a lot too!” Cobalt squawks. “The citizens are feeling much less of a strain after the bad harvest, since you did all you could to feed everyone.”

Topaz hums. “You have been much more sensible than usual.”

Amethyst narrows her eyes. “To be frank, you haven’t acted much like yourself.”

“Amethyst, should you really say that to him?” Emerald scolds her.

Ruby looks down. “You have been acting a little differently. You asked us stuff you should already know.”

Ah. He must’ve worried his court with Haou’s odd behaviour.

“Well then, you should thank the man who was really here this past year.” Jesse declares.

All heads turn to him.

“It began on that hunting expedition this time last year, where I was separated from the hunting party. I found a man injured and his pack of white dogs with blood red ears.” Jesse hums.

Emerald’s eyes widen. “The Cŵn Annwn?”

Jesse smiles. “And King Haou himself. He was facing a war in Annwn and his enemy had played unfairly, so I offered to go in his place while he recovered in my lands. We swapped appearances for the last year and he has returned to his own lands now.”

His court stares at him.

Then Topaz bursts into laughter, soon joined by Amber.

“You two be quiet!” Amethyst scolds them.

Sapphire chuckles. “This is a rather unusual situation.”

“Well done on getting King Haou’s friendship, your highness.” Emerald declares. “You have found yourself a powerful ally.”

Jesse smiles.

“This last year has been truly wonderful. You won’t take this rule from us, right?” Ruby asks.

Jesse smiles and turns to her. “I promise I won’t. I will do all I can to follow in the example Haou has given to you all, and I ask you to advise me as I could not witness it myself.”

Cobalt grins. “A wise choice, Jesse Prince of Dyfed, son of Valon.”

Jesse nods.

Time passes, as time does. Though Jesse rules his own lands, he is still a Prince and must pay tribute to his father when he needs to.

Which means dealing with his uncles and siblings.

Jesse shakes hands with his oldest brother. “It’s been far too long, Zane.”

Zane glares down at him. “That is Prince Zane to you, Tywysoges.”

“I will respect you when you respect me, brawd . How are your lands?” Jesse smiles, used to the politics. “They are still in good health, yes?”

“My people are disciplined and strong. Stronger than those in Syrus’ care.” Zane shoots a hateful glare towards their other brother. “How father was convinced to give him territory is beyond me.”

Jesse glances at Syrus.

Syrus was always the gentle soul who shook when he held a wooden sword. Syrus was always the quiet one who wanted no part in royal affairs. Syrus was unhappy to be given the smallest sliver of land, wanting no land at all but to live with their parents.

Syrus is standing a little taller and with a fire in his eyes as he stares back at them.

Jesse knows that look. The same look he had in his own eyes when he resolved to become a Prince.

“The law does demand that land be split evenly between descendants and relatives.” Jesse points out. “We were all given the same amount of land.”

Zane only glares harder. “And you know as well as I do that lands can be reunited if someone wins them back.”

Of course. Jesse is the one who united their lands, not Zane.

“I’d watch my back if I were you, Jesse.” Zane threatens him.

Jesse only smiles wider. “Of course. Thank you for looking out for me, Prince Zane.”

That is all his older brother will ever be, should Jesse have any say in his fate.

The doors slam open, fog filling up the room.

All heads turn to the party crashers. The familiar party crashers.

The Cŵn Annwn appear out of the fog first, growling as they march in.

People scream and shout, making way for the beasts, trying to avoid getting too close to them.

Jesse smiles and walks towards them.

Syrus gasps as he passes by. “Jesse, don’t go near them! That’s suicide.”

Jesse looks over his shoulder, at his older brother who never grew any taller than him. “It’s alright, I know these beasts.”

“Know them?” Mako his uncle calls out.

“It’s true.”

All heads turn as the fog clears up enough to reveal the figures of legend.

King Haou, ruler of all Annwn, son of Gwyn, with eyes of gold and powers of shapeshifting that can not be questioned.

Monarch Yubel, ruler of all Annwn, child of the mysterious Light And Darkness Dragon who chooses who rules the realm of fae and the dead.

Jesse makes his way through the split crowd, approaching the two.

Haou greets him with a smile, offering his hand. “Jesse, Prince of Dyfed and rightful heir to these lands. It’s been too long.”

Jesse takes his hand. “It truly has, Haou King of Annwn and rightful ruler of all magic.”

Yubel rolls their eyes. “And what about me?”

Jesse offers Yubel his hand. “It’s an honour to meet you once again, Monarch Yubel of Annwn and rightful ruler of all dragons, in my true form.”

Yubel smiles and takes his hand. “I suppose a formal introduction was long overdue after we laid together for a year, little mimic.”

Gasps of shock cry out around the room.

Jesse wants to laugh so badly right now, it’s not fair.

“If I might ask, King Haou, why are you here?” His father steps forward, Valon standing tall despite his oncoming illness.

Haou turns to him and then addresses all the nobles in the room. “I have come to repay Prince Jesse for a great debt. He has defeated one of my enemies and returned a great act of trust. He was strong, loyal and brave.”

Everyone is staring, whispers breaking out.

“Prince Jesse, kneel before me.” Haou orders.

Jesse does as asked.

“For your kindness and integrity, I owe you a debt. As does my husband.” Yubel steps forward.

Haou joins them. “From this moment on, your title as Prince of Dyfed will fall out of use.”

Jesse’s eyes widen, but he doesn’t dare raise his head.

“We proclaim you, Jesse son of Valon, by your new title. Jesse Pen Annwn.” The two declare at once. “Rise, Jesse Head of Annwn.”

Jesse lifts his head, shocked at the title.

Haou smiles and offers him a hand. “When your time in this world comes to an end…”

“And our time as the rulers of Annwn pass….” Yubel smiles and offers him a hand.

“You shall take our place.” They say at once. “If you accept this title.”

Jesse stares at the two and realises why they came to him today, in front of his family’s court. They want him to rule his family’s lands well, so that he will rule Annwn correctly when his time comes.

Jesse offers the two his hands. “I accept. Thank you for this honour.”

They shake on it. And as their hands shake, two rings of gold appear on Jesse’s ring fingers.

“Should you ever need us, you can use these to find us.” Haou explains, withdrawing his hand.

Yubel smiles, withdrawing their hand. “You will give the one on your right hand to your partner.”

Jesse nods.

Haou turns around. “Enjoy the festivities, Jesse Head of Annwn.”

“Be a good ruler, little mimic.” Yubel smirks over their shoulder.

“I will.” Jesse smiles at the two of them. “I won’t let you down, dear friends.”

They both smile at him and the rest of the guests.

And with a flash of lightning and a crash of thunder, the fog rolls out, taking the Cŵn Annwn and the Rulers of Annwn with it.

Jesse smiles as he turns to his shocked family.

If this doesn’t secure his right to the throne, he doesn’t know what will.

And so, for a time Jesse Head of Annwn lived peacefully. He shared whatever treasures he could find with Haou and Yubel, sending them horses, hawks and hounds. They were equally generous in their returned gifts of broaches, rings and precious stones. They shared letters and meetings, delighting in conversation and food whenever they felt like visiting.

But while Jesse Head of Annwn was ruling the lands of Dyfed peacefully, things were stirring in Annwn.

Yuuna groans as she throws another letter onto the fire. “Again? How many times do we have to tell him no before he backs off?!”

Baou snarls at the flames. “I could just kill him, if he’s bothering you this much.”

“Let’s not be hasty.” Haou calls out. “Harrington isn’t worth the effort.”

“Your father’s right, even if it’d be the most effective way to make him leave you alone.” Yubel sighs.

The family who rule Annwn are gathered in one of the drawing rooms of the castle, with soft fabric covered furniture offering them comfort along with the crackling fire. Yuuna and Baou are pacing in front of the fireplace, while Yubel and Haou sit on one of the sofas, reading back to back.

“This is getting ridiculous though.” Yuuna continues to pace back and forth. “He hasn’t even seen me once, NOT ONCE and now he’s sending me gifts and letters every single day, nothing that I actually like. He keeps insisting that we’re already engaged, even though I know I didn’t sign off on that, Tad didn’t sign off on that and Bebe didn’t sign off on that, so what’s going on ?!”

Yubel and Haou watch her pace, then turn to one another, putting their books down.

“We could engage you to someone else, cariad.” Haou offers. “Do you have your heart set on anyone, little princess?”

Yuuna groans and sits on the floor, legs crossed. “No. I’ve just never really thought of this stuff before and no one’s ever really caught my attention.”

“I know how you feel. Even after I met your father, it took me years to fall in love with him.” Yubel hums. “It took just as long for me to feel any attraction towards him too.”

Baou puts his head on the ground and covers his ears. “And I haven’t been able to sleep since. The time when Jesse was pretending to be Haou was the most peaceful year I’ve ever had in this castle.”

“Jesse?” Yuuna blinks, turning to him. “Who’s Jesse?”

Baou lifts his head, staring at her.

Then he groans and turns to Haou. “Did you seriously forget to tell her, your majesty?”

“In my defence, it slipped my mind.” Haou sighs.

Yuuna turns to him. “Tad?”

“Jesse is a mortal, heir to the throne of Dyfed.” Yubel explains. “Remember when our main concern was Adrian?”

Yuuna nods, holding her chin. “Yeah, I remember the year before he was killed Tad was acting a little… weird?” She turns to him. “That was Jesse?!”

Haou winces. “Did you only just realise that wasn’t me, Yuuna?”

“Hey, in my defence, what reason did I have to think my Tad wasn’t in the castle?!” Yuuna leans forward. “So come on, how’d you meet him?! How’d he end up pretending to be you?”

Haou sighs. “Adrian attacked me in the woods and injured me after our first battle. Jesse found me and helped me, but wouldn’t let me go battle Adrian while I was injured. So we swapped places for a year and he defeated Adrian for us.”

“He also didn’t sleep with me while pretending to be your father.” Yubel sighs. “It was a very lonely year for me.”

Haou reaches over and kisses their shoulder. “And I promise to spend the rest of my nights making it up to you, my heated heart.”

Yubel turns to him, smirking. “I expect you to, my gentle soul.”

Yuuna smiles as she watches her parents. She’s been waiting to find a love like that, someone who wants to build a life with her and who she enjoys the company of. She’s had many friends over the years but no one she could see herself spending a lifetime creating a life with. It must be nice to have that, even if Baou complains about them all the time.

Maybe that’s what’ll help her out…

Yuuna gasps and jumps up. “I have an idea!”

Haou pauses in kissing Yubel’s arm. “What is it, little princess?”

“This better be clever, cariad.” Yubel smirks.

Baou lifts his head.

Yuuna grins. “What if we asked Jesse to pretend to be my fiance?”

Baou gazes at her, mouth open in shock.

Yubel blinks rapidly in surprise.

Haou stares at her, eyebrows raised high.

“We already know he doesn’t mind lying if it’s for the greater good and maybe if he pretends to be my fiance, then Harrington will leave us alone!” Yuuna slams her fist into her palm. “It’s a perfect plan.”

Her family stare at her a bit more.

“Are you sure about this, Yuuna?” Haou’s eyes narrow in seriousness. “You don’t know him as well as I do.”

Yuuna smiles. “If you trust him, then I do too. Plus he never treated me badly when he was you.”

Yubel slowly starts to smile. “Well then, I see no reason to stop you if that’s what you want.”

Yuuna nods.

Yubel waves her off. “Then go meet him. His court should be in Arberth this time of year.”

“Awesome! I’ll see him there, if Tad also approves of this plan.” Yuuna turns to him.

Haou nods. “In fact, stay with him until a month before the wedding party. That way you’ll be able to get to know each other better.”

“Got it, thanks Tad, bye Bebe!” With that, Yuuna sprints out the door, excitedly talking about what she’ll wear and how she’ll meet him.

Haou and Yubel watch the door, waiting until she’s completely faded from hearing range to speak.

"I know we expected to engage them sooner rather than later." Yubel hums. "But I didn't think it would be this soon."

"I thought it'd take years before we convinced her to think about who should rule Annwn at her side." Haou nods. "Perhaps we should thank Harrington after all."

Baou whines. "Princess Yuuna is starting to grow up."

He isn’t ready for the chaos that will produce.

“How long do you bet it’ll be before she falls in love with him?” Yubel smirks.

“3 days. And you, my love?” Haou bets.

“3 hours. But knowing her it’ll take months before she puts the word to the feelings.” Yubel kisses his neck. “Now, what will the winner get?”

Haou tilts his head back, gasping. “P-perhaps who will rule over whom on their wedding night?”

Yubel hums. “I do love that kind of bet.”

Baou sighs and trots off, leaving the two alone to their scheming and romancing.

Chapter Text

Jesse Head of Annwn had not changed much after acquiring his new title. He was still clever and strong enough to protect his people. His siblings and family members no longer challenged him to take repossession of their territories. Everyone had agreed they did not want to contest with the Head of Annwn for control of Dyfed, leaving Jesse free to focus on internal affairs and make life better for all his people.

But even the Head of Annwn needs to rest from time to time.

So Jesse is in Arberth once again and the local bards are beginning to tell a new tale.

Alexis daughter of Rhodes is tuning her crwth, pressing the bow along it’s strings.

“Jesse, Head of Annwn, I have a tale to share for your fine ears.” Atticus, son of Rhodes and Alexis’ brother, gives a bow. “If I may begin your highness?”

“Please do.” Jesse leans back, listening closely.

Atticus and Alexis have been in training with Rhodes for quite some time. This will be their debut to his court, so he’s excited to see which tales they’ll share tonight for his people.

“This is a legend of Gorsedd Arberth.” Atticus hums. “It’s a hill, quite close to here.”

Jesse blinks. “I’m not familiar.”

He knows the lands around Arberth well. To think there’s a place here that he hasn’t heard of is surprising.

Atticus smiles as if he knows a secret. “It has been here longer than you or I have, your highness.”

Then Alexis begins to play her crwth.

“Won’t you come and walk with me?” Atticus begins to sing.

“On these hills, these hollow hills.” Alexis begins behind him.

“Such a wonder there to see.” Atticus taps his feet.

“So the story goes.” Alexis hums.

“Neath the green and different skies.” Atticus throws his left arm up, pointing to the ceiling.

“In these hills, these hollow hills.” Alexis tilts her head back.

“Is where the land of Faerie lies.” Atticus lowers his hand and begins to clap to the beat.

“So the story goes.” Alexis faces the front.

Jesse hums. Interesting.

“All is quiet, all is still,” Atticus grabs a chair, holding his finger to his lips, “take a seat upon this hill.” Atticus sits down next to his sister, covering his eyes. “The Eye of Bel is closing soon.”

Alexis smiles.

“In evening’s twilight you sit down,” Atticus takes his hands off his eyes, “upon this sacred hollow mound.” Atticus looks up with a smile. “To receive a wonder-” Atticus falls off his chair. “Or a wound.”

Jesse blinks. A wonder or a wound?

“Won’t you come and walk with me?” Atticus claps and gets back up.

“On these hills, these hollow hills.” Alexis calls out behind him.

“Such a wonder there to see.” Atticus taps his feet.

“So the story goes.” Alexis shrugs.

“Neath the green and different skies.” Atticus throws his left arm up, pointing to the ceiling.

“In these hills, these hollow hills.” Alexis tilts her head back.

“Is where the land of Faerie lies.” Atticus lowers his hand.

“So the story goes.” Alexis faces the front.

Jesse begins to tap in time with the siblings rhythm.

“From the day that you were born, and when you heard the hunter’s horn.” Atticus mimes as if he is blowing the hunter’s horn. “Is this free will or destiny?”

Alexis looks to side.

“The Grey Folk smiling it is done, the spell is cast it has begun.” Atticus puts a finger to his lips, grinning. “And such a wonder you will see.”

The Grey Folk? Dwelling within Gorsedd Arberth? Is it a portal to Annwn?

“Won’t you come and walk with me?” Atticus claps.

Atticus and Alexis share a grin.

“And as that day back in the Glen, the air is still and silent when.” Atticus smiles wider as if he’d been there to see Jesse meet Annwn all those years ago. “A vision from across the field.”

Alexis’s smile is knowing too.

“The Gates of Annwn open wide, a Lady on a horse astride.” Atticus throws his arms out wide. “And now the prophecy’s revealed.”

Jesse blinks. A prophecy?

“Won’t you come and walk with me?” Atticus claps.

“Won’t you come and walk with me?” Atticus claps.

“So the story goes.” Atticus sings with Alexis.

Alexis strums her last cords and the siblings bow.

Jesse stands up and applauds them both, causing the rest of his court to stand up and applaud them the same.

Atticus and Alexis stand up straight.

“Thank you both for that wonderful performance. You do your father proud.” Jesse declares.

Atticus smiles and gives a short bow. “Your praise honours us, your highness.”

Alexis also gives a short bow. “We appreciate it greatly.”

“Tell me…” Jesse leans closer. “Where is Gorsedd Arberth?”

The court goes quiet.

“Your highness, are you really suggesting going to Gorsedd Arberth?” Ruby winces

“It could be interesting.” Amethyst purrs.

“It could be dangerous.” Topaz growls.

“If I have such a company with me atop the mound as I have right now, I doubt I will be injured.” Jesse smiles and stands up. “But a wonder I would like to see.”

Topaz sighs and Amethyst smiles.

Jesse looks around. “All those who wish to remain here may do so. If you are intrigued by this tale though, I welcome you to join me at Gorsedd Arberth.”

“We can guide you to it’s location, your highness.” Alexis offers.

Jesse nods. “Please do. Let’s be ready within the hour!”

With that, Jesse and his court set out for Gorsedd Arberth.

Jesse rides Pegasus with a smile on his face as they approach the mound. Soon they climb to the top, to enjoy the view and to await the wonder or the wound. If no wound is present, then Jesse will accept the view of his lands as wonder enough.

“Thank you for guiding us here.” Jesse turns towards Atticus and Alexis.

But the siblings are gone. As if they hadn’t been there at all.

Jesse blinks, dismounting Pegasus.

“Look!”

Jesse turns towards the trees that Ruby is pointing to.

Where a horseman appears. Riding a bright white stallion with a mane the colour of blood, the rider is cloaked in a dark brown robe with a helmet obscuring their face.

Jesse’s eyes widen as he stares at the stallion. Something about them is familiar…

“Does anyone recognise the rider?” Sapphire calls out.

Everyone replies no.

Jesse watches the rider, trying to figure out who it could be.

Then the horse picks up speed, the rider holding the reins tightly. They’re charging towards a thin stream between the forest and the hill and the horse jumps, clearing the stream in an instant. The rider shouts something Jesse can’t hear, but it sounds happy.

“That’s certainly an impressive leap.” Ruby notes.

Emerald hums. “It’s as if the marchog and ceffyl are one.”

Jesse’s eyes widen as he watches the performance.

The horse and rider continue, picking up the pace. The rider raises up and stands with their feet still in the saddle, one hand on the reins, waving towards Jesse and his court.

“How did they do that?!” Amethyst shouts.

Topaz laughs. “They could teach us a thing or two!”

Jesse stares, heart in his throat.

The rider sits down, the horse still riding it’s quick pace. Then the rider unclips their cloak, letting it fly away and revealing a scarf of golden brocaded silk, a red tunic, brown trousers and thick riding boots. Then they slide one leg off their horse, holding tight to the neck, swinging their body around under the neck to land back in the saddle.

“Around the neck?!” Amber screams.

Cobalt whistles. “Someone needs to greet this rider.”

Jesse has never seen anything like this.

“I’ll do it.” Jesse runs over to Pegasus, climbing aboard him quickly.

With a shout, the two of them are off, racing down the hill to catch up with the rider and their stallion.

The pair have slowed down to a gentle trot towards the mountains, the rider hugging their horse like a friend, ruffling their hair like a playmate.

Jesse urges Pegasus to slow down, as he wouldn’t want to exhaust his friend. Surely he’ll catch up to the rider and their horse if they continue travelling at that steady pace.

But when Jesse and Pegasus reach the bottom of the mound, the rider and horse are still far away, even though they ride so slowly.

Jesse narrows his eyes. “Something strange is going on here, boy. Can you go faster?”

Pegasus chuffs.

With that, they go faster, trying to catch up to the rider and horse who still travel at that steady pace.

But the faster they go, the further away the rider and their horse become.

Jesse knows that one will see a wonder or be injured if they sit upon Gorsedd Arberth and if this rider and their horse isn’t a wonder, Jesse doesn’t know what is.

When Pegasus huffs and puffs and begins to lose pace, Jesse knows he has but one chance left.

“Rider!” Jesse shouts. “For the sake of the man you love most, please wait for me!”

He just wants to talk to them.

“Sure thing!” The rider shouts back. “I’d have done that earlier if you just asked, your highness! It would’ve been kinder on your horse too.”

With that, the rider pulls their stallion to a stop.

Jesse finally catches up to them, pulling Pegasus to a stop, both of them gasping for breath.

The rider chuckles, watching them.

Jesse catches his breath and turns to them. “Who are you? Where are you going? Why perform tricks for my court and myself? Who taught you these skills or did you learn them yourself and for what reason?”

“I go my own way, about my own business.” The rider replies. “I wanted to get your attention. For you see…”

The rider grabs their helmet, casting it aside.

Jesse’s eyes widen in shock.

Yuuna sits across from him on top of Neos, smiling.

“I’m Yuuna, Princess of Annwn, daughter of Haou and Yubel.” Yuuna smiles. “I have come to ask for your help, Jesse Head of Annwn.”

Jesse leans closer. “Is everything okay? Has a new enemy appeared in Annwn?”

“Of a sort.” Yuuna rubs the back of her head, awkwardly. “Ya see, there’s this very persistent noble named Harrington son of Rosewood who has announced himself to be engaged to me. He keeps showering me with gifts and letters I want no part of and even single combat has not made him leave me alone.”

Jesse winces. He remembers Yuuna’s point blank refusal to consider marriage and her incredible prowess in battle.

“So, if your heart does not belong to someone else, I have come to ask if you would pretend to be engaged to me. At least until Harrington backs off.” Yuuna bows her head. “Would you please help me out?”

Jesse stares at her, heart racing from the ride and from her proposal.

He remembers his year in Annwn, how fond he became of the princess he pretended to be the father of.

“You’re not upset that I lied to you for a year? That I pretended to be your father?” Jesse asks, just to be certain.

Yuuna lifts her head, laughing. “Nah, Tad explained what happened with Adrian. Plus you were never cruel to anyone while pretending to be my father, nor were you in any other way dishonest. It’s okay if you don’t want to, but it’d mean a lot to me if you could do this.”

Jesse remembers his hopes for Yuuna to one day know him as himself and for him to get to know her better while being himself.

Jesse smiles. “I accept your proposal. When should we set the marriage feast?”

“A year from today in Annwn.” Yuuna grins. “In the meantime, Tad says it’s okay if I stay with you and we can work on the whole, pretending to be engaged thing.”

Jesse nods. “Well then, may I introduce you to my court as my fiance? You left quite the impression on my family.”

Yuuna’s smile widens and her eyes shine bright. “Of course!”

With that, the two of them ride up Gorsedd Arberth.

And soon, it was known to all in Dyfed that Jesse Head of Annwn would take Yuuna, daughter of King Haou, as his bride.

Yuuna smirks as she stands on top, sword pointed at Jesse’s throat. “Do you yield?”

Jesse tilts his head back. “I yield.”

Yuuna laughs as she pulls her sword back, sheathing it once again. That was a fun Duel! He was strong and fast, used moves Yuuna has never seen anyone in Annwn do and almost disarmed her a few times too! But in the end, she won.

She offers her hand to Jesse.

Jesse smiles and takes it.

Yuuna wonders what it’d be like to hold his hand without their gloves.

“You’re just as strong as I remember you being.” Jesse replies.

Yuuna laughs, pulling off her helmet. “I’m always sharpening my skills for the next Duel! War isn’t really my style, I honestly only do this for the fun of it.”

Yuuna remembers the other girls and women of her father’s court thinking it odd that a woman like her enjoys combat. They thought it might have to do with how she lived as a child. But her father and guardian always had her back and encouraged her to just do what feels right. And battle is something that has fit Yuuna like a glove.

“I enjoy it too.”

Yuuna blinks, turning to Jesse.

Jesse smiles at her. “I don’t like hurting people. But I enjoy a good fight. And sometimes a crossing of blades can bring about peace.”

“A battle can bring peace?” Yuuna raises a sceptical eyebrow.

“Sometimes peace is threatened by evil, which seeks to lord over it as Adrian tried to do so.” Jesse looks up where the clouds roll through a pale blue sky, streaks of golden light coming down. “Peace must be defended in order for it to continue to exist. Sometimes a brief battle between two people can bring wars to a close before they even begin.” Jesse turns to her. “That’s why I fight. To protect peace and to ensure those in my care can lead fulfilling lives.”

Yuuna stares at Jesse. “Wow…”

“What?” Jesse turns to her, the golden rays of sunlight gliding across his face, making his eyes sparkle in every colour Yuuna knows.

“I really admire why you fight.” Yuuna says, then looks down. “I don’t really know why I fight.”

“You just said you fight ‘cause it’s fun.” Jesse blinks.

Yuuna nods. “Yeah, but it sounds like a silly reason compared to yours.”

Her Tad fights because he’s the King and it’s his duty to protect his people from all threats. Her Bebe fights because they are the rightful inheriter of Annwn and it’s their family’s duty to maintain balance and harmony throughout the magical realm.

Yet Yuuna only fights because it’s fun. It’s selfish really. She wants to be more like Jesse.

“Hey.” Jesse puts his hand on her shoulder.

Yuuna turns to face him.

Jesse smiles at her. “I’m sure there’s other reasons you fight. You just don’t know them yet.”

Yuuna blinks at him.

“It took my whole life to realise all I wanted to do was ensure everyone has happy lives. But I can only take care of so many people.” Jesse bends down, picking up his fallen sword and sheathing it. “I became the Prince of Dyfed so I could bring more people under my protection and so they would help me achieve my goal.” Jesse turns back to her. “Take your time and figure it out as you see fit.”

Yuuna smiles at him, a weight leaving her heart.

Jesse is already such an incredible leader. Yuuna will work hard so one day she’ll become as wise and kind and clever as he already is. She’ll use this fake engagement to learn from his example.

“Oh, I was just thinking!” Yuuna leans closer to him.

Jesse smiles, leaning closer. “About what?”

“About our engagement.” Yuuna says. “I think it’d be good to talk about what we should be doing.”

Jesse glances to the side, where two guards are watching them.

Yuuna kinda forgot they were there. Talk about a lack of situational awareness. Bebe will kill her for this.

“Walk and talk.” Jesse suggests.

Yuuna nods and they start walking through the courtyard they’d just been battling in. Here the flowers and trees are a bit different to Annwn, but not so different it feels like she’s in another world.

“So what were you thinking?” Jesse asks as they walk.

“Oh, about how we should act with each other and stuff.” Yuuna turns to him. “What’s typical for people who court in Dyfed?”

Jesse hums. “Well… courtship is usually a private affair. Lovers find each other at employment fairs or in the hay fields for harvest. Then if they like one another they meet at windows, where the women invite the men into their rooms for conversation. The exchange of gifts are common as well, such as knitting tools, bookmarks or jewellery. Not to mention poetry. The boundary between courtship and marriage isn’t too well established. Public displays of affection aren’t common.”

“I see.” Yuuna smiles. “I don’t know about most nobles, but I know Tad and Bebe have always been really affectionate with each other, no matter who’s around! They hold hands, hug each other and kiss all the time.” She giggles. “They love nicknames, it’s amazing that they remember them all!”

Jesse smiles. “Well, would you like a nickname Yuuna? Any preferences?”

Yuuna giggles. “But you have to come up with it, or it’s not a real nickname!”

“Fair enough then. You can have a nickname for me too.” Jesse looks up at the sky. “What to call you…”

Yuuna looks at Jesse. She watches how the dying golden light shines on his face, lighting up his hair, making his whole head look as if it’s shining in every light.

“Rainbow Heart…” Yuuna murmurs.

Jesse hums, turning to her. “Huh?”

Yuuna smiles. “I’ll call ya that. My rainbow heart.”

Jesse blinks and chuckles. “I like it. Rainbow heart and…”

Yuuna smiles wider, excited and eager.

Jesse smiles wider. “Hmm, I’m not sure if I remember what I just thought of.”

“What?!” Yuuna trips over her own feet, barely righting her balance in time.

Jesse laughs, grabbing her shoulder and pulling her back before she falls. “Sorry, the chance was too good.”

“Trickster!” Yuuna pokes her tongue out at him.

Jesse leans up in her face, almost touching her tongue with his nose. “Amazon.”

Yuuna blinks, pulling back. “Amazon?”

“They’re a race of female warriors from the continent.” Jesse looks towards the east, where the rest of the world is rumoured to exist. “It is said they are the equals of men and the daughters of a War God.”

Yuuna hums, smiling. “They sound like they’d be a lot of fun to fight.”

Jesse shrugs. “Perhaps. I’ve only heard stories. But that wasn’t what I was going to call you.”

Yuuna smiles. “What were you going to call me then, my rainbow heart?”

Jesse smiles, turning to her. “How do you feel about my dragon heart?”

Yuuna blinks.

Dragon Heart? Dragon Heart… Dragon Heart!

“I like it.” She smiles. Then she sits down.

Jesse looks at her.

Yuuna pats the spot next to her. “Well, would you join me and share your stories of the continent, rainbow?”

Jesse smiles. “If you tell the first one, I’ll match it’s grandness, dragon.”

“Okay, I’ll take that bet.” Yuuna leans towards him. “Shall I tell you of my great ancestor and how he battled the wicked White Dragon of the Saxons?”

Jesse hums, leaning towards her. “I do believe I’ve heard of this tale. King Gwrtheyrn tried to build his mount atop Dinas Emrys-”

“Where the Red Dragon, my ancestor, was imprisoned by Lludd of the Silver Hand.” Yuuna beams.

Jesse smiles back. “Well then, I will tell of the Red Dragon’s confinement if you tell of it’s release.”

Yuuna hasn’t known Jesse very long.

“Begin then.” Yuuna requests.

But she likes him a lot already.

Jesse nods and begins to speak.

Yuuna leans on his shoulder and listens well.

With the negotiations covered, the terms agreed and duties divided, Jesse and Yuuna were set to leave Arberth in his court’s hands while they took a company of guards, valuables and supplies on a tour across Dyfed. So all would know across the world of the great love held between Jesse Head of Annwn and Yuuna daughter of Haou and Yubel. They also decided to use this time to check on his seven centrafs of Dyfed.

First was Emlyn.

Syrus greets him at the front gate. “Good day to you, Jesse Head of Annwn and Yuuna Princess of Annwn.”

Jesse shakes his younger brother’s hand. “It’s good to see you again, Prince Syrus.”

Yuuna shakes his hand too. “Nice to meet you pal! You can just call me Yuuna.”

“Very well then, Yuuna.” Syrus responds. “Shall we head to the dining room then to eat and speak?”

Jesse nods. “Let’s go.”

With that, Syrus guides them through the castle. They soon reach the great hall, filled with men and women of various social ranks, the tables filled with large arrays of food. It’s an impressive spread, considering the bad harvest Syrus had this year.

“This looks amazing!” Yuuna says.

Jesse is glad he asked her to be polite, since the food in Annwn is far better than anything that can be created in these lesser magical lands. The first time Yuuna sat at a feast in Arberth, she’d blurted out that it was a bit small and Jesse had to do damage control to avoid offending anyone.

Offending his brothers and uncles could lead to war. It was hard enough getting them to follow him the first time. Even with his new title at his back, he doesn’t doubt Zane or the others wouldn’t use Yuuna against him or use it to justify taking the lands for themselves since he’ll be guaranteed rulership after his death.

Soon everyone is seated at the table in order of rank, Jesse at the head with Yuuna on his right and Syrus on his left. The musicians come in and begin to play, the bards singing and everyone else speaking excitedly.

“How has the management of your Cantref been?” Jesse asks. “Is all well in Emlyn?”

Syrus sighs and looks at his plate. “Not as well as we hoped things would be, brother.”

Yuuna leans across the table. “What’s wrong?”

“Afon Cych, the Cuch River, has been flooding lately and the bridge Pont Cych is beginning to break.” Syrus folds his arms. “We’re having difficulty finding the funds to repair the bridge, after spending most of our money on feeding our people to avoid the worst effects of the bad harvest. We also need to build flood defences around the villages that border the river.”

Jesse frowns. “I heard a messenger tell me of this.”

The centraf of Emlyn may be under Syrus’ command, but it is still in Dyfed’s territory. Thus it is Jesse’s duty to provide for his people and help fix this mess. What can he do to gather up money and supplies to repair the bridge?

“I could help you with that.”

The two of them turn to Yuuna.

Yuuna pulls something out of the bag she keeps at her side and when they can see it, their eyes widen in shock.

“Is that gold?” Syrus asks.

Yuuna nods, smiling. “Yeah, a broach made from the gold of Annwn. If you performed an auction for it, I’m certain you could gather enough funds for the bridge. Maybe even have some leftover for the flood defences too.”

Syrus accepts the broach with wide eyes, tears forming in them.

Jesse smiles and turns to Yuuna, mouthing ‘thank you’.

Yuuna smiles back and mouths ‘your welcome’.

“Are you sure I can just accept something like this?” Syrus looks at Yuuna. “I mean, it’s such delicate craftsmanship and it’s a prized material. Why give it up?”

Yuuna leans towards him. “Syrus, repairing this bridge will help your people, won’t it?”

Syrus nods. “Yes. We need it to ensure trade can happen smoothly between Emlyn Is Cuch and Emlyn Uwch Cuch. The Afon Cych is what separates the two halves of Emlyn and being able to work with the river is important.”

“Then giving it to you is a worthy cause.” Yuuna leans back. “The people of Dyfed will soon become my own. It is my duty to care for them. I only hope that once I take my place at your brother’s side, you’ll continue to support us.”

Jesse carefully watches Syrus, drinking from his cup.

He remembers the fire in Syrus’ eyes during the family meeting where his new title was announced. He knows it’s possible that Syrus, meek as he has always been, could one day rebel against him.

Syrus hurries to wipe at his tears, not wanting to show weakness in front of everyone.

Then he smiles at them. “I, Syrus son of Valon, will always stand at Jesse Head of Annwn’s side and view his partner Yuuna Princess of Annwn as my own sister. I solemnly swear loyalty to you all for the rest of my days.”

Yuuna and Jesse smile back at him.

“Seems everyone’s happy then.” Yunna giggles.

“Well I’m not happy with this.”

Eyes widen and heads turn.

Ran daughter of Kochou. An ex-consort of Zane who Syrus took in. A rather ruthless woman who is still loyal to Zane even after he abandoned her.

Jesse doesn’t know why Syrus let her into his castle.

“I don’t think this foreign princess knows what she’s talking about. How can she claim to care for our lands as if they are her own?” Ran points to Yuuna. “I think you should leave and stop wasting the Head of Annwn’s time.”

Everyone turns to Yuuna and starts to whisper.

Yuuna looks at Syrus. “What’s her problem?”

Syrus gulps. “Sorry I thought she’d stay in her room.”

Jesse turns to him. “How did you know she’d make a scene?”

Syrus nervously rubs the back of his head. “Well uhh, things didn’t work out with Zane so… I think she wanted to try her luck with you and Yuuna is kinda in the way.”

Jesse’s eyes widen.

“Not on my watch.” Yuuna turns to Jesse. “Can I please fight her?”

Jesse doesn’t think that’s a good idea. “Yuuna-”

“For your honour?” Yuuna pleads with him.

Jesse’s heart gives a hopeless flutter and he shakes his head. “Most women can’t fight the way you can. Words are used as weapons more often.”

“Well I’m not as clever as Bebe.” Yuuna smiles at him with her sharp teeth. “But I can still leave a mark with those.”

Jesse stares at her.

Then Yuuna stands up. “Ran daughter of Kochou, correct?”

“What of it?” Ran rolls her eyes.

“I just think it’s polite to use people’s names, Lady Ran.” Yuuna bows to Ran. “After all, I may be a foreign princess, but I do remember the names of my people.” She lifts her head, smiling with all her teeth. “I also think Prince Jesse can be the one to decide what is worthy of his time and attention. So unless you have anything useful to contribute about Emlyn’s restoration, I suggest you sit down.”

Ran gapes at her as whispers break out at the table.

Yuuna turns to Jesse, reaching out to hold his cheek gently, pulling his head to look at her.

Jesse stares, heart racing.

Yuuna smiles at him gently. “Now, did you have any ideas on how to improve the flood defences, arian?”

Jesse smiles back, returning the affection. “A few, aur.”

Ran gasps and huffs, sitting back down.

The murmurs break out anew, at the affectionate titles of silver and gold.

When the guests retire and Jesse has a word with Syrus, his young brother says. “You really care for her, don’t you?”

Jesse nods. “I do. I chose her as my partner for a reason.”

For the sake of her peace. And to get to know her better.

Syrus smiles up at him. “You’re a good match.”

Jesse smiles back at him. “We are.”

Second was Gwarthaf.

Zane is looking at her like he wants her anywhere but in his Cantref and if Yuuna is completely honest, she thinks it’s hilarious.

“Zane, it’s good to see you again.” Jesse offers his hand.

Zane reluctantly shakes. “You too, brother.”

He spits the word as if it’s an insult.

Yuuna smiles with her teeth. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lord Zane.”

“Prince Zane.” Zane insists, glaring at her. “Is Annwn a land without manners? Or are you just rude?”

Oh yes. Yuuna knows he hates her. She kinda hates him too.

Jesse chuckles and takes Yuuna’s hand, holding it kindly. “One who is rude to others shouldn’t expect to have respect in return, Zane.”

Yuuna’s blood rushes a little faster at the contact. She knows physical affection isn’t commonplace for the Dyfed nobility, not in public at least. To hold her hand in front of Zane like this-

Zane looks even more miserable. “Did you really have to go on this tour so soon?”

“On the contrary, it was needed.” Jesse tugs Yuuna closer to him, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

Yuuna rests her hand on his heart, guarding it just to be safe.

“Our engagement couldn’t be known until now, or I would’ve introduced her to you at the family gathering.” Jesse gives Yuuna a smile. “After all, a woman such as Yuuna deserves to be celebrated by all our kingdom, starting of course with our family.”

Yuuna smiles at Jesse, then leans on him a little more. “I’m honoured that I get to be taken into such a kind family, full of generous and wonderful people. Did you also marry into this family, Lord Zane?”

Jesse chokes on a laugh he disguises as a cough, leaning on her more.

Zane scowls at them with all his teeth. “Let’s get this dinner over with.”

Then he turns on his heel, marching back into his castle.

Jesse laughs quietly against her.

“Shhh, he can’t know you’re laughing behind his back, rainbow heart.” Yuuna teases him.

Jesse looks at her with a fire in his eyes. “For someone who isn’t as good with words as they are with a sword, you leave a sick burn, dragon heart.”

Yuuna’s own heart jumps just a bit. What is this feeling?

“We shouldn’t keep him waiting though. Let’s go.” Jesse walks into the castle, tugging her forward.

Yuuna follows behind, smiling.

Third was Penfro.

Mako greets them at the border. “Well hello there!”

Yuuna smiles as she takes his hand. “It’s an honour to meet you, Lord Mako.”

Jesse smiles at her. She did the greeting right, good.

“Welcome to Penfro Lady Yuuna!” Mako ushers them towards the castle. “I’ve got a whole bunch of fresh fish here for you that me and my men caught today!”

“You fish?” Yuuna asks, blinking in surprise.

“Yep!” Mako laughs. “Not much of a land hunter, so I became a water hunter!”

Jesse watches the two of them get to know one another better. After Jesse was born, though Valon was his father, Mako was the one to raise him. It has always been tradition in the family for sons to be raised by friends or other relatives. Jesse is just grateful that when it became apparent he was a prince, Mako took him in and allowed him to be himself. Mako is also the least formal of his relatives, so he trusts that Yuuna will be able to relax here, at least a bit.

“Jesse, Head of Annwn?”

Jesse turns at the call of his name.

A young man Jesse doesn’t recognise has walked up to him, dressed in a messenger’s garbs.

“Could I speak with you for a few moments?” The man says. “I represent my lord, who is in the area and wishes to seek your audience.”

Jesse hums, thinking carefully about his words. “It depends on what you’re here to discuss.”

The messenger nods. “Of course, but I assure you it will be quick.”

Jesse glances at Mako and Yuuna.

Mako is teaching Yuuna the secret handshake they had when he was a child. She looks absolutely fascinated.

Jesse smiles, then turns to the messenger. “Very well then, you may speak here.”

“Of course, thank you Milord.” The messenger bows, then straightens. “You see, my lord would like to offer you a few centrafs and gold in exchange for a request.”

Jesse narrows his eyes. “What sort of request?”

Gold can be traded and bought, but one does not relinquish land that easily. What could they want?

The messenger sighs. “Well, Milord, he wishes that you end your engagement with Princess Yuuna-”

“I won’t.” Jesse holds up his hand. “I’m afraid that is the one thing I will not do.”

Yuuna seeked him out to protect herself from an unwanted advance. He will not dishonour her request for his help.

The messenger nods. “I figured as such. I can see the way you gaze at her.”

Jesse smiles. “Then I take it things will be fine here?”

“Of course, Milord. Thank you for your time.” The messenger bows to him. “I bid you farewell.”

With that, the messenger leaves.

“Jesse!”

Jesse turns his head.

Yuuna is waving at him excitedly. “Come on!”

Jesse smiles and runs to catch up. “I’m coming!”

Fourth was Rhos.

Yuuna stares at the beach in awe. She’s never seen the ocean before.

It’s open and wide, vanishing off the face of the earth. The sky and the ocean meet each other perfectly, as if they are one in the same. As if in some far away place, the Sky God and the Sea God can be together where the Land God can’t keep them apart.

“Does the ocean exist in Annwn?” Jesse asks.

Yuuna nods. “I mean, I imagine it does. But it’s too far to travel usually.” She smiles. “It’s beautiful…”

After Yuuna and Jesse met with King Valon and his consort Mai, they were instructed to explore Rhos as they saw fit. Yuuna decided to see the beach, as she’d never seen the ocean before and Jesse was all too happy to show her the open waters. She’s been so curious ever since she had that fresh fish dish Mako caught for them.

Now she knows where the fish come from.

“Well you’re in luck.” Jesse comes from behind her, wrapping his arms around her in a hug.

Yuuna smiles, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath in through her nose. She really likes how he smells, like dirt and campfires. The beach smells even better with him here.

“6 of the 7 centrafs border the ocean somewhere.” Jesse sighs. “So we could go anywhere and find the ocean at some point.”

Yuuna smiles. “That’d be nice. I’m glad we’re friends, Jesse.”

Even after everything with the engagement calms down, she’ll get to come back to Dyfed any time she wants. She’s really so lucky.

She watches the waves brush over the sand, sees the birds flying overhead, watches a few land and peck at the sand, as if looking for grubs in such an ever changing, ever altering, ever growing place.

Yuuna smiles.

Then she runs out of Jesse’s arms, laughing as she calls over her shoulder. “Catch me if you can Jess!”

“Hey no fair!” Jesse chases her but he laughs because it’s absolutely fair. “You got a head start Yuu.”

Yuuna laughs harder, the birds clearing the way for her. She runs faster and faster, the sand harsh against her bare feet, shoes forgotten about by the log with their bags and Jesse’s shoes. The sand between her toes, the rush of the wind beating her back, the cries of the gulls as she gets ever so close.

It makes her feel free the same way battle lifts her spirit.

Then her feet touch the water and she squeals like a pig, sprinting away. “IT’S COLD!”

She’s never felt something that cold! Not since last winter when she fell in the lake!

Jesse laughs, grabbing her wrist and tugging her back towards where the waves lap over his feet. “Stand tough soldier!”

“No!” Yuuna cries out, squealing as the water rushes over her legs. “It’s freezing!”

Jesse only laughs harder, holding her hand tightly and securely, supportive. “You can do it! I’m right here with you!”

Yuuna wraps her arm around Jesse, seeking out his warmth. “Nooo, it’s too coollldd! The great Princess Yuuna, Daughter of King Haou, Child of Monarch Yubel, descendant of the great line of Dragons who rule Annwn, can not handle a bit of salty cold water! It is my mortal enemy!”

Jesse laughs so hard his knees go weak, but he doesn’t let go of her hand, bringing her down with him a bit.

A wave washes over them both and Yuuna squeals.

“It gets better, once your legs go numb.” Jesse assures her, gasping for breath.

Yuuna pouts. “But if I’m numb then I’ll get caught, too cold to move ouchie ouchie ouchie!”

Jesse smiles at her and-

Yuuna’s heart skips a beat, racing faster and faster.

“I’ll stand in the cold with you.” Jesse assures her. “And even if my feet go numb, if you can’t move, I’ll bring you back out of the waves with me. We’re a team.”

Oh.

Oh that’s…

That’s why Bebe and Tad gave him the title Head of Annwn.

Yuuna stares back out at the ocean, the realisation washing over her like the waves.

They knew. They knew she’d get to know Jesse through this engagement.

They knew she’d come to love him.

But did they know…

Jesse takes a deep breath and eases his grip, making it comforting but not tight.

Did they know he’d love her too?

Does he love her?

Does he love her as a lover?

Yuuna looks down at the sand, watching her feet sink into the wet surface, her realisation setting in and putting down roots.

Well regardless of if he loves her as a lover does…

“You enjoying the beach, Yuuna?” Jesse asks her, voice raised over the waves.

…he’s still important to her. So she’ll make the most of this time.

“Yeah. Only one thing would make it perfect.” Yuuna smiles at him.

Jesse blinks.

Yuuna reaches down, as if to grab one of the shells.

Then she splashes Jesse with water.

“Hey!” Jesse barely shields his face in time, letting go of her hand to do so.

Yuuna laughs back, victorious in her return of his usual little jesters.

Jesse shakes his head like a wet dog and smirks at her with all his teeth. “Oh you picked the wrong person to play splash attack with, Princess. I happen to be rather good at this game.”

Yuuna smirks back with all her teeth. “Give it your best shot, Prince.”

Then she splashes him again, laughing as she goes, hitting him. Jesse squeals and splashes her back, the two of them making waves of their own, their laughter the loudest sound on the beach. Their clothes get soaked through, the salt reaching their hair, the gulls flying away from them.

But the smiles never leave their faces.

And that night, Yuuna dreams of salty kisses on a sunny beach.

Fifth was Dewisland.

Makoto took them into the mountains, where legends of a dragon had begun to stir. Yuuna was so excited to see another dragon, potentially a relative even, she didn’t think to question where he’d heard the legends or why he wanted to investigate them. Jesse didn’t think to question his cousin either, though, so he’s equally at fault.

As they hide in the cave, battered and bruised but alive, Jesse regrets trusting his cousin so easily.

“Here, drink this.” Yuuna tenderly raises her helmet to his lips, water from the stream in it.

Jesse tilts his head to drink it slowly, trying to focus on the cool water instead of the warm blood on his hands.

“Good job.” Yuuna lowers her helmet, gently taking his head, making their eyes meet. “How’s your vision?”

Jesse focuses hard, closing his eyes for a moment, overwhelmed by the attention and care. Not that she hasn’t given him all her attention and care before, but this is. This is different. They’re alone, yet she’s still affectionate. There’s no chance anyone will see them, but she’s still so gentle with him.

Jesse is a Prince. He fought hard and true to become a ruler. Not just a political marriage tool, but a real ruler. No one is gentle with a prince. No one is gentle to the Head of Annwn.

Yet here Yuuna is. Tenderly rubbing a healing cream on the bruises and scrapes on his skin.

“Are you comfortable?” Yuuna asks. “Is there anything I can do?”

Jesse thinks on it hard. Even though he’s just sitting down, the world still feels like it’s spinning. One of Makoto’s men got him good before he took them down with Yuuna.

“Can you help me lay down?” Jesse asks.

Yuuna nods. She sits beside him and gently pulls his body towards her own. Jesse is able to shift his legs and waist, though Yuuna helps guide him down slowly when his world spins more.

“Easy now, shhh darling.” Yuuna coes to him softly. “Just rest.”

His head lays upon her thigh and his mind spins harder, heart lost in the contact.

“It’s alright.” Yuuna places the back of her hand against his forehead. “You don’t seem to be ill. Just concussed. Are you in pain?”

That makes sense given Jesse’s headache.

“A bit.” Jesse closes his eyes. “Having you here eases it though. I don’t know where I’d be if not for you.”

After all, Yuuna was the one who held on when Jesse slipped off that cliff. Yuuna didn’t let go until she found a way to protect them both. She hurt her shoulder in that moment and her hands bleed from how tightly she held on, but she never faltered even once. She really is strong.

Water lands on Jesse’s face.

He opens his eyes.

Yuuna is crying, looking at him as if he’d just broken her heart.

“Yuuna?” Jesse asks, confused, concerned. “Are you okay?”

Yuuna ducks her head. “You got hurt and I couldn’t stop it. I’m sorry.”

“Wha?” Jesse closes his eyes. “I saw how you fight. You saved my life.”

Once again, she came to his rescue. She’s the strongest and toughest of the pair of them, Jesse usually can’t defeat her in a crossing of blades.

“Thank you for being in my life.” Jesse hums. “I love getting to know you better. I love spending time with you. I love you, so no need to say you’re sorry Yuuna. You’re not at fault.”

Yuuna pauses in her crying, sniffling and then there’s a bit of quiet.

“Jesse, no one is here. Why…” Yuuna whispers. “Why say you love me?”

“I mean it.” Jesse murmurs. “I love you, Yuuna. I love you.”

There’s quiet. He expected that.

“It’s okay. You don’t have to answer me now.” Jesse keeps his eyes shut, not wanting to see her confusion. “I just wanted you to know.”

He imagined Yuuna returning his feelings often enough. He knows how unlikely that is. But still, sometimes from the way she looked at him, he thought…

Well it doesn’t matter what he thought. At the end of the day, Yuuna will always have his support. Regardless of if she returns his feelings or not.

“You…” Yuuna calls out.

Jesse blinks his eyes open. “Me?”

Yuuna smiles at him with tears in her eyes.

Jesse waits.

Yuuna laughs and dries her tears. “I, I don’t wanna pretend to be engaged anymore.”

A blade nicks Jesse’s heart.

“I want to be engaged for real.” Yuuna leans closer to him.

Gold bleeds from the blade, mending the crack.

“Jesse, Head of Annwn, son of Valon, Prince of Dyfed…” Yuuna smiles at him. “Will you marry me?”

Jesse stares at her, shocked.

Then he smiles.

“Yuuna, Princess of Annwn, daughter of Haou and Yubel, the Warrior Princess…” Jesse smiles back at her. “If I could choose from all the women and maidens in the world, it is you that I would choose.”

Each and every time.

He’d choose her.

Over and over.

Always her.

Yuuna laughs and leans closer. “Can I kiss you?”

Jesse nods. “If you’re comfortable at that angle. I don’t think I can move too easily.”

He laughs it off.

And when they kiss, it tastes of sea salt, freedom and joy.

Luckily, it doesn’t take Jesse long for his own men to find the happy couple. Makoto is arrested and Jesse seizes his property, exiling Makoto for his treachery.

“If you kept me around, I could get rid of Zane for you, I can help you!” Makoto shouts and screams as he’s dragged away.

Jesse calls out. “Zane may be my enemy, but at least he’s honest. I will not have such an adept liar within my kingdom to plot against me and my people.”

Makoto screams and pounds on his cage as he’s dragged off. “You’ll pay for this Jesse! You and that red wearing harlot will be punished, I’ll see to it! You’ll pay, you’ll pay, you’ll pay!”

The wagon takes him off.

Yuuna hums, wrapping one of her arms around his waist. “Such a shame too. He threw his comfortable life away just for power? It’s a wonder men like him get anything done in these petty kingdoms.”

“Well we can’t all be united all the time.” Jesse chuckles. “It’s rather rare for such a thing to occur.”

“That just makes you special. You’re a good peacekeeper, Jesse.” Yuuna smiles.

Jesse turns to her and smiles. “I guess I am.”

He hopes when his days are done, he’ll continue to be a good peacekeeper. He’s had enough of war and battle.

He’ll leave that to Yuuna or someone else.

All Jesse needs to be happy is a comfortable shelter, warm food and good company to share such wealth with. And now…

“Are you ready?” Yuuna smiles at him.

Now he has everything he’s ever needed.

“Always.” Jesse smiles at her.

He takes her hand and they head into Makoto’s former castle, then discuss whom they can trust to give the land to. They think about it a great deal before they do it of course.

But soon Syrus rules over this cantraf too.

Sixth was Cemais.

Which luckily had a portal to Annwn.

Yuuna goes through first and Jesse holds her hand the entire time.

They wait for a bit, twisting their rings to call Haou and Yubel to their location.

They appear with a clap of thunder and roll of fog, Baou at their feet.

“Jesse!” Baou barks.

Jesse laughs as he gets on his knees, hugging the dog and looking adorable while doing it

“Yuuna, it’s good to see you again.” Haou brings Yuuna into a hug.

Yubel hugs the two of them. “You’ve been missed, Little Princess.”

“I missed you guys too.” Yuuna giggles. “I’ve seen so many amazing things in Dyfed.”

She saw the sea, she saw the sunset on the beach, she saw the tide come in, she met Jesse’s family, she saw so many interesting foods. It couldn’t have been a better trip. And now…

Yuuna giggles as she pulls back.

Now she gets to give them a surprise.

“So, I take it you came back for something important and not just because you missed us.” Haou hums.

He knows her so well.

Jesse smiles and stands up. “Yeah, we did your Majesty. Ya see…”

He smiles at her and Yuuna’s heart skips a beat as she smiles back.

They reach for each others’ hands, lacing their fingers together.

“We realised that we’re actually really good together. We’re getting engaged for real.” Yuuna declares.

She turns back to her parents.

Yubel grins. “When did you fall in love with Jesse?”

Yuuna rubs the back of her neck. “Well, I don’t really know, haha. I just know I realised how I felt while we were in Rhos.”

“Well I guess we know who won the bet then, my love.” Haou chuckles.

Yubel rolls their eyes.

Yuuna blinks in confusion. “What bet?”

“Maybe we can ask another time.” Jesse scratches his cheek, a nervous habit he only does around people he likes. “I think… I mean I think it’s more important to ask if you two are alright with me as a son in law.”

Yubel and Haou blink at them in confusion.

Yuuna holds Jesse’s hand a little tighter, offering him her support. Even if there’s no need.

“Jesse, we gave you the title Head of Annwn for a reason. It wasn’t just your loyalty and integrity.” Haou rolls his eyes.

Yubel smiles. “We figured our little mimic would take care of our daughter too. We were right.”

Jesse blinks.

Yuuna thought so.

Jesse turns to her. “Are you okay with that Yuuna?”

Yuuna smiles. Of course he’s worried if she’s upset about their marriage essentially being arranged before they even knew it.

“I trust my parents and I love you. I don’t care how this happened. I’m just glad it did.” Yuuna smiles.

Jesse blushes and looks down, smiling.

Baou trots up to them. “Jesse, if you break Lady Yuuna’s heart, I will rip your own straight out of your rib cage.”

“Hahaha, I’ll let you since I’d deserve it.” Jesse holds up his free hand in surrender.

Yuuna laughs, soon prompting her own parents to laugh along with Jesse and Baou.

Maybe this will all work out just fine after all.

Seventh, and final, was Deugleddyf. Their home.

Jesse’s court all greet him at the door and a feast is prepared.

“A toast!” Sapphire calls out. “To Yuuna, Princess of Annwn, daughter of Haou and Yubel! To Jesse, Head of Annwn, son of Valon! May you live the rest of your days in happiness and peace!”

“Cheers!” The rest of the court calls out.

Jesse laughs and stands up. “Thank you, my friends. I appreciate all the support you’ve given us through the years. I also thank you for protecting our main court while we were away. In these turbulent times, I’m honoured to be around such incredible people.”

He truly chose his court well. But equally as important…

Yuuna smiles at him and his heart pounds.

He found a partner who loves him.

“Let us enjoy the meal and consider wedding planning more in depth as we converse.” Jesse sits back down.

Soon the conversations continue.

Jesse turns to Yuuna. “Well, my bride to be. How would you like our wedding to go?”

Yuuna smiles. “I have a few ideas, my husband to be.”

They clink their glasses and Jesse feels at peace.

Chapter 5: Rhiannon, Scene 2 “Whatever you ask of me, as long as I can get it, it shall be yours.”

Summary:

How Jesse lost his fiance

Notes:

Welsh Translation:
glyn - valley
cŵn - dogs
priodferch - bride

In the original myth, Pwyll was the one who made the rash promise that lost him Rhiannon, but I really didn't see Jesse saying something that stupid.

Chapter Text

Time passes and the month before they were fated to be wed, Yuuna returned to Annwn to prepare the wedding feast. Jesse spent the month lonely and missing his partner, but the knowledge that he would return to her home gave him comfort on the long dark nights in their bed alone.

On the anniversary night of the day Jesse met Yuuna, the young prince dreams of her.

He dreams of his people, drinking and feasting as they celebrate his happiness.

He dreams of his court in Annwn, relishing the wonders of this magical land Jesse would inherit.

He dreams of the forest of Glyn Cuch near Arberth, where Yuuna walks Baou to the edge of the forest, kneels down to kiss the Cŵn Annwn on his forehead and then stands up.

Yuuna turns to Jesse’s direction.

She smiles and waves.

Jesse waves and smiles back at her.

Then a man in a white cloak grabs her hand and starts pulling her away.

Yuuna screams, Jesse runs and-

“Your highness?”

Jesse jumps up, gasping for breath, hand over his heart.

He turns his head towards the door.

“Sorry to startle you, sire.” Marcel bows as he speaks. “We just received word that Lady Yuuna requests your presence at Glyn Cuch. Should we begin to prepare you for your journey?”

“Good day to you, Marcel.” Jesse turns towards him, nodding. “Please, we must leave at once.”

He doesn’t want to delay the matter any longer.

Marcel bows. “Of course your highness.”

With that the boy leaves.

While Jesse, Head of Annwn, prepares for his journey.

Jesse marches his court along with 99 of his best men, following in each of Baou’s paw prints. They travel through Annwn, eyes wide with awe as they enter the realm Jesse spoke so highly of. They make it to Haou’s court in good time.

Yubel is the one to greet them. “Welcome back to Annwn, little mimic.”

Jesse dismounts Pegasus and walks over to Yubel, bowing. “Thank you for the warm welcome, Yubel.”

The two shake hands.

“When can I see my priodferch?” Jesse smiles.

Yubel rolls their eyes. “All in good time, little mimic. For now, if I recall you and Yuuna agreed for a midnight wedding and it is still only morning.” They gesture to the court. “Come. Allow your company to rest and to eat, before the ceremony begins in earnest.”

Jesse can’t wait.

Soon everyone is changed or made comfortable, seated around the table in order of rank. The space on Jesse’s left side remained empty, waiting for Yuuna to arrive. Haou sits on his right and Yubel next to him.

“I imagine you and Yuuna will have a small army of petitioners to manage before the ceremony begins in earnest.” Haou leans back in his chair. “After all, a royal wedding is not a common occurrence and all in our lands are invited tonight.”

Jesse is more than used to petitioners coming to his castle and asking for boons. He knows how to avoid rash promises or starting fights over his resources.

This will be a test for himself and for Yuuna. To see how they manage all the wealth of the court for a night.

“Announcing her royal highness!”

All heads turn to the entrance.

Jesse barely resists the urge to stand up and run to the door, only standing up and waiting for the doors to finally open.

“Daughter of Haou and Yubel. Princess of Annwn. Descendant of the Light and Darkness Dragon.” Gearfried smiles. “Honoured guests, I give you your host. Lady Yuuna!”

Applause breaks out as everyone stands up and claps.

The doors opens.

Jesse’s jaw drops.

Yuuna walks into the room, wearing a dress as red as blood. It’s snug around her shoulders, trailing down in the back of her ankles but stopping above her knees in the front. A sword is on her hip secured by a black belt. A golden scarf trails around her neck and down her back, which she removes from her head, revealing a silver tiara. She wears red hunting boots, laced up high.

A beauty and a danger. A Princess and a fighter. His partner and his lover.

Jesse clumsily touches his mouth, just to be certain he isn’t drooling or have food on his face.

Yuuna walks towards a short stage, just a small flat wooden one only raising her a few feet above the floor.

“Thank you all for coming.” Yuuna begins her speech, looking around the room with a smile. “Tonight, I will be united with the man I love most. Annwn’s next King will take his proper line in succession and I know we shall rule this land well together.”

Jesse can feel everyone staring at him, but he can’t focus on anything but Yuuna.

“But before that, we will welcome many a petitioner to participate in this wonderful evening.” Yuuna holds her hands in front of her chest. “So eat, be merry, enjoy the music and listen carefully to the tales the bards have to share with ye. I hope you will all enjoy this evening as much as I will and if you have any needs, you may ask Lord Jesse or me for help.” She bows her head. “Thank you.”

Applause greets her as she steps off the stage and Jesse tries to clap the loudest. His eyes never leave Yuuna once as she walks around the tables to join him at her rightful place.

Yuuna smiles as she looks at him. “Hello, my rainbow heart. You certainly look handsome.”

Jesse is a Prince, so he has no shortage of fancy clothing for any situation. But he feels like a boy playing dress up in his outfit. A blue tunic with black pants and his best riding boots. A cloak of a much deeper blue adorns his shoulders, with precious stones of every colour embedded in the fabric itself.

He can hardly compare to the vision Yuuna makes.

“You are the most beautiful being I have ever seen, my dragon heart.” Jesse reaches out, gently taking Yuuna’s hand, kissing the back of it.

Never did he ever expect to find such a wonderful woman to spend his days with.

Yuuna laughs him off. “Thanks, now let’s sit. The petitioners should start coming in soon.”

Right of, of course. He needs to be focused.

The two take their seats, prompting the rest of the court to do so.

The doors open and the citizens of Annwn begin pouring in.

Jesse will do his best to ensure things go well tonight. They have to.

“If I can, your highnesses, please may I take enough food to fill this sack? My family is starving.”

“Of course you may! Should you need anything more, you will always be welcome in the castle.”

“Thank you, you are most generous!”

“Your highnesses, my landlord refuses to mend my roof. My room has become more river than stone. Please ensure it does not remain that way.”

“We will send a craftsman down tomorrow. If you tell us the name of your landlord, we will investigate him and ensure he is not doing such a thing to others as well.”

“Thank you for your time, Princess Yuuna.”

“Please, your grace, my daughter wishes to learn how to read and write. She has a great mind and would serve you well. Please teach her this craft.”

“We’d be honoured to have another scholar among our court. She can begin her training in a week.”

“Thank you, Prince Jesse!”

On and on the requests come. It’s going really well.

Yuuna smiles as she takes a sip from her champagne, resting her head on Jesse’s shoulder. There’s a small lull in the petitioners, the initial flood handled and now only a trickle comes through. It gives the two of them a moment to breathe.

“How are the court’s funds?” Yuuna asks.

Jesse smiles. “We’re still in good shape. Since we’ll be housing our scholar, we just need to ensure we cloth and feed her well enough.”

“Sounds good.” Yuuna looks down at her glass with a smile. “I want to ensure the lives of our people are good and rich. The more people we can teach, the better.”

“Excellent policy, Yuuna.” Jesse gently clinks his glass to hers. “Perhaps we should look into creating better education for everyone. Find a way to teach all our citizens, regardless of wealth.”

Yuuna likes that idea.

“Excuse me.”

The two of them turn to the small stage, where the next petitioner stands in a cloak.

Odd, but not every petitioner has revealed their face.

“I have come to ask for a boon.” The petitioner calls out. He sounds like a young man.

Yuuna hums. “And what kind of boon would that be, stranger?”

She can handle this one. It’s almost midnight so this will likely be the last one before she can finally marry Jesse. She missed sharing a bed with him.

“One that only your Highness can grant, Princess Yuuna.” The petitioner insists.

“Whatever you ask of me, as long as I can get it, it shall be yours.” Yuuna says.

CLANG!

All heads turn towards Yubel, who has face planted into the table.

Haou sighs, hiding his face in his hands. “Why would you ever give such an answer?”

“It is too late now, King Haou, Monarch Yubel.” The petitioner chuckles.

Yuuna blinks in confusion, turning to Jesse. “Did I miss something?”

Jesse’s eyes narrow, then widen in horror.

“My request is that you give yourself to me, along with this feast and the party.” The petitioner declares. Then he removes his cloak, revealing a man older than Yuuna or Jesse, with short dark brown hair. “For I am Harrington, son of Rosewood and your rightful fiance, Princess Yuuna!”

Yuuna stares in shock.

Everyone goes silent.

Yuuna isn’t sure what to say.

“Be silent as long as you like.” Yubel hisses. “Never has a royal been as stupid as you have just been.”

“But, but I didn’t know who he was!” Yuuna hisses back. “I never saw Harrington in person!”

Haou groans. “Yuuna, as a Princess you are honour bound to keep your word.”

No.

No, no, no.

She can’t go with him!

“If you do not uphold your word, you will be called an oathbreaker !” Yubel snarls. “Now be clever and handle it.”

How can she be clever about this?!

What can she do?!

“If I may interrupt, Harrington.” Jesse stands up. “It would greatly dishonour my men and the other guests here if Princess Yuuna took back the food and the entertainment to give it to you. You would do well not to make her insult my people.”

What’s Jesse doing? Wait-

Be clever and handle it.

Yuuna stands up. “Prince Jesse is quite right. I can not give you or any guests you bring gifts that I have already granted to others. Instead, I will arrange another feast for you, a year from now.”

Harrington narrows his eyes. “And you? Will I finally be allowed to have you, my Princess?”

Yuuna hates the way he says her title. “It would insult the good people of Dyfed and yourself if I left now to bed with you. No, the best thing to do would be for you to return in a year’s time when your feast is held. Once that has finished, I…” She feels sick as she gives in. “I will marry you and you shall sleep with me that night.”

“Thank you for granting my rather reasonable request, Princess.” Harrington smiles at her. “I shall return to King Haou’s court in a year then, my flower.”

With that, he turns around and leaves.

Yuuna sits down, burying her face in her hands and trying not to cry as the murmurs and whispers break out.

“To think a Princess would give such a thoughtless answer.”

“She did well to avoid a fight breaking out, but she shouldn’t have been so careless in the first place.”

“Is this really the woman who will rule us after King Haou and Monarch Yubel have passed on? Will we be safe in her care?”

A comforting hand on her shoulder. “Hey.”

Yuuna turns to Jesse.

“You did well to stall for time.” Jesse smiles at her.

That does it.

That’s what prompts the tears to spill down Yuuna’s face. “Jesse-”

“Shh. Harrington is the only one at fault, for taking advantage of your good will.” Jesse gently dries her tears. “You managed to stall him for an entire year as well. You did well.”

Yuuna sucks in a sharp breath and looks up. “But I’ve only done that! Stall! If we don’t come up with a plan to win me back in a year’s time, I’ll become his wife and he’ll become King of Annwn one day!”

She can’t allow this. No matter what, she can’t allow this.

Haou speaks up. “Yuuna, you still have all the wealth of the court at your disposal. You know this castle and it’s assets better than anyone. Use them.”

Yuuna stares at her Tad.

She knows he’s right. She gave the careless answer, now she must live with the consequences.

“Hey.”

Yuuna turns to Jesse.

He smiles at her. “You figured out the plan to catch my attention and fake our engagement. Now use your brain to make this right.”

Yuuna stares at him.

Then she nods. She can’t afford to keep wallowing like this. She has to make this right.

At least she has a year to fix this mistake.

Chapter Text

The year passes too quickly and too slowly for Jesse’s liking. But eventually the day of Yuuna and Harrington’s wedding is near and he can finally implement her plan.

Jesse gathers his men to Annwn. Zure is the one who greets them.

“Are you ready?” Zure asks him.

Jesse nods. “As we can be.”

It’s taken an entire year for this plan to be implemented. He won’t allow it to fall apart.

Zure turns around. “Let’s go then.”

With that, his army marches towards the back of Haou’s castle.

They have to be clever this time.

Harrington has got to admit, this is the life. A party just for him. A pretty girl as his wife. A kingdom to inherit without a fight.

It’s good to be Harington, son of Rosewood.

“Remember, I must greet the guests tonight, Princess.” Harrington turns to Yuuna. “Can’t have you making any rash promises, now can we?”

Yuuna glares at him something vicious and he knows he’d be dead if she could kill him.

Harrington just smiles wider.

The petitioners come in, with all their petty, pointless requests. Nothing worthy of his attention, but it is customary for their future king to listen to them at least for a while. Every petitioner he greets the same way.

“If your request is reasonable, then gladly shall you have it.”

Most of the petitioners get approved and Harrington agrees to pay for the minor things the peasants ask of him. But nothing worth too much. He isn’t a charity after all. The bards are loud and the musicians even more so. The many guests happily converse at the table, Yuuna the only silent one while stuffing her face with food.

Acting as if her bad manners will make Harrington give up a Princess. It’ll take a lot more than that.

“Excuse me, sir? Good day.”

Harrington turns to the next petitioner.

He’s an old man, wearing a tattered cloak over his crouched frame. He looks like a beggar man with an old sack at his side with a hole in it patched over with fabric a vastly different colour.

“Good day to you as well, stranger.” Harrington sighs, greeting him with a polite smile. “State your business.”

This will be the last of the petitioners tonight. Then he can finally take Yuuna to bed and take his rightful place as Prince of Annwn.

“Just a humble peasant requesting a boon, milord.” The stranger responds.

Harrington replies as he has all evening. “If your request is reasonable, then gladly shall you have it.”

“You see, milord, I only ask that I be allowed to fill my sack with food.” The stranger pulls the sack off his belt. “My family is starving.”

“That is a reasonable request.” Harrington laughs and gestures towards a servant. “Fill the man’s bag until it is bulging with food.”

It’ll just take a rabbit and some vegetables to fill that little sack. Nothing interesting.

The servants start piling food into the stranger’s bag. But it doesn’t get any fuller. Three rabbits, several plates of vegetables and even a desert are not able to fill this bag.

If he keeps taking food, Harrington won’t have any left for himself!

“Stranger!” Harrington calls out. “What will it take to fill the bag?!”

The stranger bows. “Milord, the bag will only be full if a noble man steps within it and declares ‘Enough has been put in this bag’.”

Harrington narrows his eyes. That’s rather strange.

“Harrington…” Yuuna calls out, smiling up at him. “As the highest noble man in the room, it’s only appropriate that you are the one to step into the bag. After all, you are my hero.”

Harrington feels his face flush.

He did not expect Yuuna to finally change her attitude towards him like this.

Harrington smiles and steps towards the stranger. “Very well, I will fulfil your request.”

He takes the bag from the stranger, stepping inside it.

It’s surprisingly stretchy for a beaten up old bag. “Enough has been put in here-”

Hands grab the side of the bag, pulling it over his head, tying it up.

Trapping him in darkness.

Jesse throws off the beard and beaten up cloak, blowing his hunting horn. Instantly, his soldiers fill the room, restraining Harrington’s army before they can dare lift a finger.

“Good work Jesse!” Yuuna calls out, giving him a two fingered salute.

Jesse returns the salute. “Got him!”

“What have you got in the bag, Milord?” His chief general, Tyranno son of Hassleberry, asks.

Yuuna smirks. “A mochyn daear.”

A badger.

“I suppose it doesn’t matter then if we beat it.” Tyranno chuckles, cracking his knuckles.

And without waiting for Jesse’s orders, he kicks the bag hard.

Harrington cries out in pain. “No! Don’t kill me in this thing!”

“The badger is begging for his life?” Tyranno growls. “Didn’t know badgers could talk.”

“I didn’t either. What a strange mochyn daear this is.” Yuuna giggles.

Tyranno kicks the bag again. “Who wants to kick the badger next?”

A few of his men raise their hands, cheering and whooping.

Jesse wishes he could be better than this. But he’s feeling petty and he can’t stand what Harrington has done to Yuuna. He deserves this.

(And so, this is how the first game of Badger in the Bag was ever played.)

“Sir, killing me in a bag is no reasonable end for me.” Harrington groans after 5 minutes.

Haou sighs. “Unfortunately he is right.”

“Come now, love.” Yubel sharpens their claws. “Surely trash like him deserves it.”

Jesse is inclined to agree with them.

“But if we kill him, he can’t stick around for us to torture.” Yuuna smiles. “I have a better idea.”

Jesse bows his head. “By all means, enact it Milady.”

Yuuna smiles at him softly.

Then she crouches down, speaking to Harrington. “Harrington, we will release you if you agree to a few conditions. Is that a reasonable request?”

“Yes anything!” Harrington cries out. “Just let me out!”

“Anything?” Yuuna gasps, a delighted smile on her face.

“Anything!” Harrington sobs.

Jesse laughs.

Yuuna smiles like the dragon she is. “First, you must swear to never seek vengeance for what happened today. Nor will anyone you are friends with seek vengeance on your behalf. You will not pay anyone to enact your revenge either. You and those you associate with can not take harmful actions towards myself, my husband or our allies. Is that clear?”

“Yes! I agree with that!” Harrington calls out.

“Secondly, you will pay for everything that happened in the feast. The bards, the food, the decor. All of it, you will repay to me.” Yuuna hums. “You must pay for it over time, until you have satisfied us. You will also pay for all the favours requested by the petitioners tonight, even after you leave.”

“I promise! I’ll leave a representative to do that!” Harrington cries. “Please release me!”

“Not just yet. I have one more request. You will leave Annwn and Dyfed and never enter either land again. Sound reasonable?” Yuuna chuckles.

Harrington’s bag shakes. “Yes, yes, it’s all reasonable now release me! I am injured and want to go home to have a bath!”

Yuuna hums, looking to Jesse.

He knows she’s asking for his guidance. If he agrees this is enough.

Jesse nodes.

Yuuna smiles and stands up. “Then in that case, we shall solidify it in writing and to do that, we will have to release you.”

Jesse unties the knot around the bag, pulling it down.

Harrington already has a black eye.

A scribe brings the paper and pens. They write down the terms of the agreement, then each party signs it. Harrington is bundled up in a cloak by his attendants and ushered towards a cart.

Harrington’s representative remains, giving them a bow. “I apologise, Lady Yuuna, for all the moronic choices my Lord has made. I will ensure that you will be properly compensated for all this mania.”

“Thank you.” Yuuna smiles.

Then she turns to Jesse, taking his hand.

He takes hers, holding it tightly.

Yuuna turns to the crowd, raising their linked hands. “May the party begin once again! With my rightful partner at my side, Jesse son of Valon, Head of Annwn, Prince of Dyfed will be mine forevermore!”

“Yuuna child of Haou and Yubel, Princess of Annwn, the Warrior Princess will be mine forevermore!” Jesse declares.

Applause breaks out.

Yuuna and Jesse turn to one another and finally embrace, sharing a tender kiss as they do.

Later they’ll discuss Yuuna’s foolish choices.

Later they’ll share a bed with joy.

Later they’ll return to Dyfed.

But for now, they have each other and that is enough.

Chapter Text

The seasons turn three times and life continues. Valon succumbs to his illness. Jesse becomes the King of Dyfed, Yuuna the Queen. They spend the first few years of their reign trying to build Dyfed to new heights, increasing trade, building homes the common people can own, doing all they can to make the lives of all their people better.

The two grow older and grow more in love. They adore the changes to one another’s bodies, coming to fit better into their skin.

But Jesse’s court and brothers grew concerned, as often family do.

“You called to meet with me?” Jesse closes the door.

Inside all of his favoured relatives are within the room. Syrus and Zane are sitting beside one another, having come closer together during the years of Jesse’s rule. Mako is as healthy as he ever is, hair beginning to have a few silver streaks. Mai is sitting beside him, her blonde hair turning closer to silver in her age.

“Jesse, thank you for meeting us.” Mako stands up, walking over to hug him.

Jesse hugs his uncle and foster father back. “Any time, ewythr.”

Zane scoffs. “Can we cut to the chase?”

Jesse sighs and pulls back. He supposes they should.

He nods to Syrus.

Syrus stands up. “Jesse, you have been a wise King and a fine ruler for the past several years. Likewise, Yuuna has been a wonderful Queen and a fierce protector of our lands. However, you nor Yuuna are getting any younger.” Syrus looks down. “And you have no heirs.”

Jesse is well aware of that fact. “What are you suggesting?”

“If you don’t have an heir soon, you may die and leave your kingdom to fracture.” Zane folds his arms. “We’ll be the ones left scrambling to survive when that happens.”

Jesse knows that’s true.

If !” Mako interrupts him, laughing as he pats Zane’s back. “You’re so funny!”

Zane glares at him.

Jesse can see why he would. The matter of succession is an important one.

“This is serious, you lot.” Mai puts her hands on her hips. “If the kingdom is without an heir, particularly a male heir, then your enemies will see it as weakness and close in around us.”

Jesse knows this to be true. Though Annwn is a land without border conflicts, Wales is not the same. Dyfed has a border with Morgannwg and Ceredigion. Further north is Gwynedd and further east is Gwent.

The petty kingdoms are always changing in Wales. A kingdom’s survival depends upon producing heirs who are up to the task of ruling the kingdom safely.

“We just think maybe you should take a new partner?” Syrus looks down. “We all respect you as King and I adore Yuuna as a chwaer, but we all know you weren’t always a… a man.”

Jesse scowls.

That was his largest hurdle to the throne as a child. That he wasn’t born a man.

“Just find some way to have kids.” Zane walks out of the room. “Preferably before you die.”

Jesse narrows his eyes. “Delay the matter until the end of the year. If I have not had a child by then, then I will seek your counsel on the matter.”

“A wise decision, your majesty.” Mai gives him a bow.

Mako nods, smiling. “Good luck Jesse!”

With that, the four of them walk out of the room having completed their council.

Jesse sighs. He knows Yuuna and he are from royal families, so they’ve always been expected to have children. It’s just…

Jesse isn’t… equipped correctly for it.

But the lack of an heir is causing unrest for the people and in the courts. Things can’t go on like this.

What can they do though?

Yuuna knows her husband well after their three years together. Their relationship is still young, but it’s strong and it’s good.

As Jesse lays there staring at the ceiling instead of reading his scrolls or talking to her, Yuuna knows something is wrong. They usually go to sleep after talking about the day, or sharing stories, or discussing their dreams and hopes for the future. But he hasn’t said a thing all night.

“What’s wrong, rainbow heart?” Yuuna reaches out.

She slides her fingers into Jesse’s, giving a gentle squeeze.

Jesse sighs like a pressure valve released and squeezes her hand back. “I met with my brothers, Mako and Mai today.”

Yuuna remembers that they wanted to come over today. She’d been busy with the day’s petitioners, so she couldn’t attend the meeting.

“What was it about?” Yuuna settles more into the pillow.

Jesse closes his eyes. “Dragon heart… how do you feel about children?”

Yuuna blinks, lifting her head. “What?”

“Of our own. To rule Dyfed after we’re gone.” Jesse keeps his eyes shut. “I’m not… I’m not built the way that most men are. I won’t be able to give you children to carry.” He closes his eyes even tighter. “I’m sorry.”

Yuuna stares at her husband in surprise. She knows she’s never seen him fully bare, as he has not seen her fully bare. He never told her of these issues. But…

“I’m not built the way that most men are.”

That sounds similar to Yuuna’s experiences as a child.

“I’m not built the way that most women are.” Yuuna lays back down.

Jesse opens his eyes and turns to her.

“It took a long time for everyone to find out I was a woman in fact.” Yuuna smiles back at him. “I was 7 when I finally told Tad and Bebe that I was a merch rather than a mab.”

Jesse’s eyes widen.

Yuuna waits, trying to keep a smile on her face.

“I was 11 when I told Mako I was a tywysog rather than a tywysoges.” Jesse smiles faintly. “Mako immediately put me through all the challenging things about being a prince, to see if it would change my mind. It never did.” He shakes his head and tightens his fingers around Yuuna’s hands. “I was meant to be a prince. A king.”

Yuuna sighs in relief and giggles. “I guess we really were meant for each other.”

Was it really chance that brought them together when Jesse met Tad all those years ago? Or was it part of the Gods’ grand design, if they have such a thing?

“We really were.” Jesse draws her into a hug.

Yuuna returns the hug, smiling.

“But we still need an heir.” Jesse sighs. “And I can’t carry our children.”

Yuuna sighs, turns around and looks at the ceiling. “I know.”

Perhaps if her dragon’s blood had been stronger, she could perform magic like the spell on Bebe that gives them their half man, half woman form. Or something that would make her all woman and Jesse all man.

“Maybe…” Yuuna hums.

“Maybe what, aur?” Jesse lays his head upon her chest.

“Maybe if we visit Tad and Bebe, they’ll know what to do.” Yuuna smiles. “Bebe is kind of like us after all.”

Jesse nods. “Then we shall go as soon as we are able to.”

With that, he begins to fall asleep and Yuuna follows him.

“You…” Yubel blinks slowly. “Wanna know how you were born?”

Yuuna nods.

She, Jesse, Haou and Yubel are in one of the small rooms in her childhood castle, a simple tea set out with some sweet desert.

“Well, we told you this. You came from Yubel’s body.” Haou hums.

Yuuna blushes. “Yeah, I, I know that, but well… I know a child won’t come from my body.”

Jesse frowns. “Nor am I willing to bring a child from my body.”

That’s the crux of the issue, really. If they could simply swap tools for a few months, they’d be able to accomplish this task.

Yubel blinks then hums, nodding. “Well then, I suppose we can tell you a legend.”

Yuuna and Jesse smile, pressing up against each other.

Yubel sits on Haou’s lap, smirking from their throne.

Haou gently strokes Yubel’s face.

“It began not long after my marriage to Haou.” Yubel nuzzles into his hand, then turns to them. “I began tending a particular rosebush my parents had given me. They told me that after a year of tending the rosebush, in the middle of a rainy night on a full moon, a single rose would bloom from it. If I was ready to have a child, I would eat the single rose. If not, I would have to wait another year.”

Yuuna leans forward in anticipation.

Haou smiles, leaning up to kiss Yubel’s cheek. “We had a long talk about children the same day we got married. When Yubel told me of their parents’ rosebush, I began to tend to it as well. Yubel had to show me how. One night, I dreamed of bleeding on the thorns of the bush and the next day, I did.”

“That night, there was a full moon and a thunderstorm.” Yubel kisses Haou’s forehead. “Before the dawn broke, I went to the garden to eat the rose.”

Haou pulls Yubel closer to him, kissing their shoulder. “And nine months later, Yuuna came into our lives.”

Yuuna gasps.

She remembers that rosebush. She remembers playing next to it and tending to it as well. She remembers how Bebe would sing to her and to the bush. She remembers how Tad would wonder if it would bloom roses and Yuuna would ask if it had before.

“Wow…” Jesse murmurs. “Is there any way we could have a similar plant? One that could bring about our children without us having to carry them?”

Haou hums.

Then he smiles. “I know just the one.”

A few days later, a miraculous tree appeared in the court of Arberth, in a private garden. It’s bark was the blue of the sea and it’s said the roots of the tree wrapped around a crystal seed.

King Jesse and Queen Yuuna tended to the tree every day.

As they did, the court noticed Queen Yuuna’s belly begin to grow round with a child, or perhaps two. Only Yuuna’s most trusted handmaidens knew the truth, that the growth was from fabric tucked into her dresses. Jesse doubled their pay to ensure their silence and personally gave them his blessing to continue this, so they worked diligently.

One night, a thunderstorm claps. In the middle of the night, the door to the royal chamber slams shut through some manner of luck or magic. No one outside the room knows that King Jesse personally sealed the door, to ensure no enemy could ever know the truth.

But the people hear the Queen screaming, her King at her side, the frantic work of the handmaidens in the room. They wait outside the door with baited breath.

Then they heard it. The crying of two children.

The people rejoice and prepare to congratulate the King and Queen in the morning, after the door has been fixed.

The loyal handmaidens who’d helped ensure the ruse’s success were the second people to meet the twins born of the Crystal Tree. After their parents had run into the stormy night to pick the fruits that had finally appeared and perform the right ritual to bring them to life.

The twins were beautiful. A boy and a girl. Their eyes a gentle bronze, their hair emerald green. The boy was wild and temperamental, excitedly screaming and squealing as if glad to finally meet the world. The girl was calm and gentle, her cries fading off into gentle snores even as her twin continued to scream out. They would rule their lands together.

It was no wonder everyone in the room fell asleep as soon as the storm passed.

But they should not have fallen asleep.

If they’d been awake they could have seen it.

If they’d been awake they could have fought it.

If they’d been awake they could have defeated it.

Instead they all slept safe and sound, unaware of the mighty claws reaching into the room through the window, grabbing the children and spiriting them away.

They only learned the truth when morning came and the twins were already long gone.

Jesse wakes to the sound of screaming.

Not the screaming of babies though.

The screaming of his love.

Jesse jumps up, throwing the blanket off himself. “Yuuna?!”

Yuuna is running around the room, ripping away blankets, cracking open closets. “The children are gone!”

Jesse’s eyes widen. “What?”

“I swear we were meant to stay awake in shifts!” Mindy is under the bed.

Jasmine is standing on top of a stool, looking on top of the closet. “Mindy woke me as expected and I woke Fontaine for her shift!”

“I swear I only closed my eyes for a moment.” Fontaine bows to Jesse. “But it was dawn when I woke them and your children were gone. I’m so, so sorry, your Majesty.”

Jesse can do nothing but stare at Fontaine, then slowly walk over to the crib.

The crib that held his children, his sun and moon, when he went to sleep.

The crib that held his and Yuuna’s miracle fae children.

The crib that held his kingdom’s future.

Jesse peers inside.

The crib is empty. Not even the blanket they wrapped the children in is still there.

“Jesse.”

Jesse turns to Yuuna, who is crying.

“What do we do?” Yuuna asks. And Jesse does not know.

But in a different land, Gwent Is Coed, something troubling had been brewing for it’s young ruler: Princess Blair.

The only surviving member of her family, Blair had fought to unite her family’s fractured lands when the other petty kingdoms dared to encroach on them. She raised armies and raised crops and raised her people well.

But her pride and joy was a mare in her stable, Sheou. Every Nos Galan Mai the great mare would give birth to a great foal. Yet by morning the foal was nowhere to be seen.

Blair says to her advisor Laura. “We are careless, losing our mare’s offspring every year without keeping one of them. What do you advise we do?”

“Watch over the mare tonight and guard it with your life.” Laura suggests.

“That I will do gladly.” Blair replies.

With that, after the mare gave birth to twins and survived , Blair took up her post as a night guard for her dear friend. She’d had a few of her servants agree to remain awake for her, to give her food and warm drinks as and when she requested it. They are also to wake her up if she does fall asleep.

The horse handler Chumley does an examination of the two foals while she stands guard, sword on her hip. Blair wears a red tunic to keep her from the cold, her father’s brown cloak wrapped around her body while her black trousers and brown hunting boots cover her legs. Her dark blue almost black hair is in a warrior’s braid while her brown eyes remain sharp.

“Well, what do you know of them right now?” Blair asks, glancing at Chumley over her shoulder.

Chumley stands up. “Well, you have two fillies. Congratulations.”

Sheou licks each of her foals, nuzzling them gently.

One of them is suckling on her teat. The other bumps her head into her sister’s side, making her stop. The first one falls down and the other one takes her sister’s place, suckling.

Blair can’t help but laugh. “I see we have two more strong personalities in my homehold now.”

Chumley chuckles as he cleans off his hands. “I’ll be on standby should you need me, Your Highness.”

He bows and leaves.

Blair sighs and pulls out her sword, cleaning it once again.

She listens to Sheou fussing over her two new eboles. She listens to the awel howling outside and the wyll’s hooting. She listens to her breathing, her heart beating and her shifting.

Then she hears it.

Something out of the ordinary.

The stable door creaking open behind her.

Blair keeps her mouth shut, waiting, hand on her sword.

There’s no footsteps.

The shadow from her lantern flickers over her, the shape of a giant hand.

Blair hopes the shadow is exaggerating.

She turns around slowly.

A hand. A giant, green, yellow clawed hand clenched tightly in a fist.

And it’s coming for her foals.

Blair grits her teeth, pulling her sword from it’s sheath as quietly as she can.

The hand draws closer.

Blair stands up, putting herself between the hand and her horses.

The hand draws closer.

Blair draws her sword back.

The hand is here.

Blair swings her sword down hard, severing the hand from the arm!

Something outside gives a horrendous scream and rears back.

Blair chases it out. “You’re not getting away!”

She dives into the night, looking for any sight or sound of the beast-

“WHAAAAAA!”

She stops short, turning around.

Is that… a human baby crying?

Blair runs back into the stable.

The sound is coming from the severed hand.

Blair rushes over, prying the fingers away from the palm.

She stares in shock.

There are two babies wrapped in golden brocaded silk. Both of them are crying out.

“Your Highness!” Chumley and Laura run into the barn. “Are you okay?”

Blair nods, gesturing to the severed hand. “I am fine, but we may need a wetnurse.”

The two run over, staring down and gasping in shock.

“Well they seem to be healthy. They may have even been born tonight, Your Highness.” The physician Bastion son of Misawa says.

Blair stares at the two babies, with soft green hair and a certain air about them.

They came from fairy hands. So they’re almost certainly fairy children.

“What do you advise I do, Laura?” Blair turns to her mentor.

Laura holds her chin. “Given the circumstances that brought them here, I think you should take them in as your own.”

Blair winces. “And who do I say is the father to my visitors?”

Blair’s celibacy was well known throughout the land. The children of fairies are best left to the fairies, to rescue any human babies who had been taken in their place.

Chumley winces. “You have a point, Your Highness.”

“Then, may I have them?” Laura offers.

Blair, Chumley and Bastion turn to her.

“I do have a husband and we have been wanting children for a while.” Laura smiles. “Word takes a long time to travel and my friends are aware I have had difficulties keeping pregnant once I am. It won’t be too unusual if I tell them I wanted to wait until I birthed the children to tell them about it.”

Blair folds her arms, looking at the children in golden brocaded silk.

It’s the cloth of nobles, though there’s no family crest or design. Not even a petty kingdom flag. So these children may be from a noble house or a noble fairy house.

Either way, it could work.

“Do it.” Blair turns to Laura. “I will help the rumours spread.”

The news of a birth spreads fast, even if it’s just a courtier’s birth.

Laura bows her head. “Thank you, Princess Blair.”

Blair nods.

In Dyfed, news of the joyous birth and the mysterious kidnapping spread quickly. King Jesse and Queen Yuuna sent out a task force to find their missing heirs and offered rewards to anyone who was able to recover them.

But news doesn’t travel as quickly to the other petty kingdoms.

As Jesse and Yuuna worried for their children, Ruka and Rua were raised lovingly by Laura and her husband, coming to see Blair as an aunt over the years.

Chapter Text

Ruka and Rua grow up quickly, which is typical of fairy children. They seem to have an affinity for horses, especially fond of the fillies born on the same night they were. Blair refrains from gifting the fillies to the twins though, no matter how much they beg the stable boys to let them ride the horses.

Laura and her husband lovingly fawn over and raise the fairy children. By the time they are 1, they appear to be 4 and they learn rather quickly. Blair enjoys observing their tutoring lessons.

“Wyt ti'n gallu siarad Cymraeg?” Ruka asks, mimicking the teacher.

Crowler claps. “Da iawn! Rua?”

Rua smiles and says perfectly. “Bore da, Crowler! Dw i'n gallu siarad Cymraeg ardderchog!”

Crowler smiles and applauds him. “Very good start. But can you write it?”

Ruka is already holding her chalk with a smile, writing on her chalkboard: Dwi'n dda am ddarllen ac ysgrifennu Cymraeg .

Dwi'n well am ysgrifennu Cymraeg na fy chwaer. Rua writes on his board.

Ruka gasps and folds her arms, turning away from him while Rua laughs.

In the corner of the room, Laura and Blair drink their tea.

“With how quickly they’ve grown, it’s hard to believe they only came to our lands 4 years ago.” Blair muses, setting a cup down.

Laura smiles at her side, drinking tea. “Indeed. They’re desperate to spend time with the horses.”

“Perhaps I’ll give the fillies that were born that night to them, then.” Blair sips her tea. “They’ll need to be broken in first.”

“Nothing would make them happier, Your Highness.” Laura bows her head to Blair. “Diolch yn fawr iawn.”

Blair only smiles.

And almost as soon as Ruka and Rua were given the fillies, whom they named Fairy and Stream, they were getting into trouble.

Jim has been a knight in Jesse’s service for a long time. Though he was never particularly close with the King or Queen, he knew they were good people who held all those in their land close to their hearts.

It was never good news when a kingdom had no heirs, particularly when those heirs had been stolen. That’s why Jim was dedicated to finding the lost children.

“Really? King Jesse and Queen Yuuna lost their children 4 years ago?”

Jim nods, confirming it. “It’s true Miss. Had you not known this before?”

The nobel woman in a Prince’s uniform shakes her head. “Given how far my lands are from Dyfed, it takes a while for word to travel. It can take several months for word to reach us here.”

“I see.” Jim nods to her. It doesn’t surprise him, Gwent Is Coed is quite distant from Dyfed. “Well the children would’ve been 4 by now. It’s odd that they were taken on the night that they were born. No one could’ve known it would happen until it was happening.”

“That is strange.” The woman holds her chin. “What day did the Queen give birth to the twins?”

“It was Nos Galan Mai.” Jim hums. “The veil between worlds is thin on that night, as it is on Calan Gaeaf.”

Spirit Nights are often nights of mischief. How unfortunate the children came about on such an evening. If things had been different, they surely would’ve been safer if they’d come about a day sooner.

“Thank you for your news, good sir.” The woman nods to him. “Will you need a place to sleep tonight?”

Jim smiles. Even in these strange lands, people are still kind.

“Thank you for the offer Miss, but I must be going. I swore to the King and Queen I would find their children, so I must keep my word.” He dips his hat to her. “I best be off now.”

The woman smiles. “Very well then. Take care, good sir.”

Jim nods and turns forward, kicking Shirley gently into gear.

They have a lot of ground to cover.

“You mean to tell me…” Laura looks at the children she tenderly raised for the past four years, sleeping on the bed she and Andrew built for them. “That they’re King Jesse and Queen Yuuna’s missing children?”

Blair nods. “They may well be. Queen Yuuna is the daughter of Haou and Yubel, the rulers of Annwn. It’s not illogical for their children to be fairy children.”

Laura is silent, watching them sleep, Rua snoring loudly with a smile on his face while Ruka is curled up quietly.

“It would be wrong to keep the children here, when their parents are missing and worrying for them.” Blair grits her teeth. “But I know how much you care for them.”

Laura always knew they were fairy children. She knew that one day they may have to return to the land of fairies.

She knows of the issues Dyfed’s Rulers had with fertility and how desperately they wanted these children.

Laura turns to Blair. “I suppose we should prepare to leave for Arberth soon.”

Blair blinks.

Then she smiles. “We should. Will your husband join you?”

Laura shakes her head. “No. He’s not the best with travel, it’d be better to leave him here.”

Blair nods. “Then you best inform him of this and the twins in the morning. It will take a while to make the necessary preparations, including readying my court to rule in my absence.”

“You’re coming with us?” Laura blinks.

She didn’t think the Princess would go out of her way for this.

“I was the one who found them, so it’s only right that I return them.” Blair looks out the window towards Dyfed.

Laura nods.

She leans down, kissing Ruka and Rua on the forehead.

Soon her fairy children will return to their court. So she will accept that.

Yuuna has been waiting for 4 years to hear news of her children. Nothing but empty rumours and false promises. Tad offered to help them cultivate the tree once again, but Yuuna didn’t want to give up on the children she’d lost. It was her responsibility to find them and return them to their throne.

“You’re not the only one who is responsible for them.” Jesse whispered to her at night.

Yuuna knows this. But still she searches for them as best as she can.

“Welcome back Queen Yuuna!”

She sighs as she removes her helmet, dismounting Neos.

Another failed search.

Another year without her children.

“There is a stranger here to speak with you and King Jesse.” Ruby tells her.

Yuuna blinks. “Really?”

Ruby nods. “It’s about your children.”

Yuuna drops her helmet, turning to Ruby. “Where is the stranger?!”

“In the main dining hall.” Ruby picks up her helmet.

Yuuna rushes past her. “Have the stableboys look after Neos!”

“Will do!” Ruby calls out.

Yuuna runs into the castle, heading for the dining hall as fast as she can, not bothering to change out of her riding clothes. The hallway feels a million miles long, but she eventually reaches the dining room doors.

She bursts open the doors.

Then she sees them.

Four strangers.

Two children who appear to be 8 years old, with emerald green hair and bronze eyes. A boy and a girl. With them are two women, one possibly a few years younger than Yuuna and another who could be old enough to be that girl’s mother.

“Yuuna, you’re in good time.” Jesse calls out, standing up from his throne.

Yuuna runs over to him. “Who are our guests?”

“Sorry, allow me to introduce myself.” The younger woman bows her head. “I am Princess Blair, of Gwent Is Coed. I have a tale that I think you should hear.”

“I am Laura, wife of Andrew.” The older woman bows her body. “I am one of Princess Blair’s advisors.”

“I’m Rua!” The boy calls out, waving his hand with a smile.

The girl bows her head. “I am Ruka.”

Yuuna stares at the two.

Her memories of the night of the birth are a bit blurry, mixed with blood and sweat and tears she and Jesse shed to bring the children into the world.

But she remembers their heads of fuzzy emerald hair. Like that of these children.

“It was 4 years ago, on Nos Galan Mai.” Blair begins. “I have a mare who always foals on that night, but her foals were always missing in the dawn. So I guarded her that night, to ensure the birth would go well and she would be safe.”

Yuuna sits down on her throne, holding her breath.

“After the fillies had been born, a great claw of a beast I could not see, began reaching into the barn for them.” Blair puts her hand on her sword’s handle. “I cut off the beast’s hand and thought to chase it into the night, but realised I would leave the horses vulnerable if I did so. I ran back into the barn and I heard children crying.”

Jesse gasps, reaching out to Yuuna.

She holds his hand, until their knuckles go white.

“I opened the beast’s palm and found two babies within, wrapped in this cloth.” Blair nods towards Laura, who brings forward a golden brocaded silk scarf that Yuuna hasn’t seen since the children vanished. “We could tell they were fairy children, but we didn’t know you had lost your own children that night, so I entrusted them to Laura to raise as her own.”

Yuuna reaches out for the scarf, fearing it’s an imitation, another dead end.

But it is definitely the one she was gifted as a child.

“If this is true, then that would be a release of our worries.” Yuuna smiles, looking at the children and Jesse.

Ruka blushes but Rua smiles at her.

“Then, do you wish to name your children, Queen Yuuna?” Laura smiles at her.

Yuuna blinks then looks at the children. “How would you two feel about that? Do you want to go by another name?”

Even if these two are her missing children, her miracle children, they are their own people first and foremost. Though they have only been apart for 4 years, they already have names they use with smiles on their faces.

Yuuna does not want to take those smiles just to satisfy her own desires.

The boy smiles at her. “Well I don’t mind, but I’ll always be me!”

“I… I’m curious to hear what you would have called us, Mam.” The girl requests.

A pang goes through Yuuna’s heart and a memory comes to mind.

Of the night they were born and Jesse calling out that “ They are our haul and our lleuad. Our Leo and Luna.

“How would you like to be named Leo and Luna?” Yuuna asks them, smiling and hoping they’ll accept it.

The boy and the girl smile and nod.

“Princess Blair, we can not thank you and Lady Laura enough.” Jesse turns to them. “As long as I live I will maintain both you and your realm, as long as I am able to maintain my own.”

Blair smiles and bows her head. “I graciously accept your generosity, King Jesse. Thank you for your kindness.”

Yuuna laughs and cries and jumps over to the women, hugging Laura and Blair tightly. “Thank you!”

A few laughs break out and Yuuna rushes to finally hold her son and her daughter. Her sun and her moon.

Her Leo and her Luna.

The years passed and the bond between the three realms of Dyfed, Annwn and Gwent Is Coed only grew stronger.

Leo grew into a fine Prince, initially eager for battle though with a poor understanding of strategy, he came to grow into his own with age and experience. Luna meanwhile became a good Princess, tending to the court and managing the kingdom’s resources well.

Yuuna and Jesse raised their children as best as they could. The kingdom rejoiced with the return of their missing heirs.

Time marched forever onward, as time does.

Soon Haou and Yubel’s time as the rulers of Annwn came to a close, so Yuuna and Jesse took on their role to rule Annwn until the end of their days.

They left Dyfed to Luna and Leo, who ruled it well and protected it for the rest of their days.

And they all lived happily ever after.

The End.
