Flora ended up finding her in the forest, sitting with her arms around her legs and glaring at a pond. Fixing her skirt, Flora sat down next to her. Neither said a word. At first.

Darcy must’ve gotten sick of the silence, since she asked, “What are you doing here?”

Flora decided to keep her gaze upon the pond. They may not have been friends for very long, but she had known Darcy since they were children. She knew how Darcy was and that being seen at her most vulnerable was a big no no.

“Whatever you need me to do,” she said.

Darcy scoffed, “Oh yeah? Like what?”

“Listen,” Flora said simply.

Silence again, but Flora was a patient person. She could wait for as long as Darcy needed.

“…Why am I so different?” she finally asked, quiet and bitter.

Flora turned to her with a frown, only for her to turn her head in the opposite direction. So she went back to looking at the pond, gazing at a lotus on the water. “What do you mean?” she asked in return.

Darcy took another moment to respond.

“I’ve never been in love,” she mumbled.

Was that… it? “That’s okay, Darcy,” Flora began gently, “There’s still time—“

“No, it’s more than that!” Darcy exclaimed. “I’ve never even had a crush before! I know when people are attractive. I like sex! But I’ve never had a crush on anyone before.” She laughed bitterly. “You know, up until I was thirteen, I thought it was all just some big joke… Then when I realized it wasn’t, that I was supposed to feel that way too, I tried to. But all of my relationships were friends with benefits… So when I started dating Riven, I decided to hold off on sex. See if that made any difference.”

“And has it?” Flora asked softly.

“No,” Darcy bit angrily, “I like him. But I don’t love him. I don’t feel a thing when he tries to be romantic with me. And kissing him is just!… whatever. I don’t feel sparks, or butterflies, or whatever.”

“…Darcy…” Flora thought carefully about how to say this. “…have you ever considered you may be aromantic?”

Flora felt Darcy’s eyes on her, so she turned to meet her gaze. Darcy didn’t look away this time.

“But I’m definitely not asexual,” she said.

“You don’t have to be asexual to be aromantic,” Flora told her.

“You can?” Darcy asked in surprise.

Flora nodded with a smile.

Darcy frowned at her lap. “But doesn’t that seem… cruel? Just using people for sex…?”

The schools’ Christmas Banquet took place after the last of exams. It was a beautiful, festive setup.

Every time Bloom said something in a conversation, Icy interjected with an insult. However, each time, Bloom humphed and turned her nose up, and Icy ground her teeth.

The Winx were concerned their plan wasn’t working. Darcy reassured them with a smirk though; Icy would give in soon. She could tell.

In intervals, after making sure none of the teachers were looking, Stormy snuck some food into her bag. (She didn’t even bother to make sure Faragonda or Griffin were paying attention. They were too busy being coy with each other).

Then Icy snapped.

She grabbed Bloom by the wrist. “Stop it already! You’re driving me insane!” she shouted, silencing the entire banquet.

Aw well, Icy wasn’t one to care about whether her actions made a scene or not.

She growled at Bloom. “I’d rather have you annoy me day and night, than you ignore me for the rest of my life! This is just torture!” she exclaimed.

Bloom, for her part, looked quite bewildered at the outburst. But it didn’t last long, turning into a gigantic happy grin upon her face.

“Oh Icy, do you mean that? Do you really mean that? That’s all I wanted to hear!” she laughed and threw her arms around Icy.

Icy scrunched her face in a scowl and ground her teeth again, but she let Bloom stay like that.

Applause started.

“What are all you looking at?!” Icy growled at everyone watching, prompting them to quickly go back to their own business.

The Winx and the Trix shared a collective relieved sigh. Darcy and Layla high-fived.

“Did they make up?” asked Stormy, walking over to them. She stuffed a whole turkey leg in her mouth.

“Affirmative,” said Tecna.

Dance class was pretty awkward. Layla could tell Anne was trying not to be weird, but was failing pretty badly at it. She tried just to focus on stretching properly.

The doors practically burst open. “Sorry I’m late,” a girl in a leather jacket walked in.

Griselda levelled her with an unimpressed look. “You’re always late, Nebula.”

Nebula looked unperturbed by that, shedding her jacket on the floor, to Griselda’s clear disdain.

Layla had heard rumours about her being part of some gang in the hallways, although she wasn’t sure if they were true. But when Nebula’s eyes landed on her own, it was easy to forget about all that nonsense. She looked Layla up and down and smirked. The predatory glint in her eyes excited a spark to life in Layla’s lungs.

She walked up to Layla, hands on her hips. Layla was pretty sure she caught a tattoo on her hand that went up, hidden by her sleeve, and wondered how far it went up. She had muscle on her too.

“Hey,” she said confidently, dangerously.

“Hey,” Layla said back with a growing smile.

“What would you say to being my partner this class?” she asked, tilting her chin just right.

Layla had already made up her mind.

“Uh sorry, she’s my partner,” Anne said, rather possessively, eyebrows scrunched.

Layla smiled and rolled her eyes at Anne. “You don’t actually believe those dumb rumours, do you?”

Layla waved her off before she could rattle off whatever else was circulating the school halls about Nebula, or the Fairies of Vengeance. Nebula didn’t seem all that bad to her and she was fun to talk with. She was a pretty good dancer too. It was probably all just hearsay.

Stella was just out in Magix (she’d gotten a mani-pedi at the salon) when she saw something very interesting. She ducked behind some shrubbery and peeked through it.

Musa and Stormy were sitting at a table together outside some sushi place.

“You can’t know you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it,” Musa scolded.

Stormy grunted. She had her arms crossed, glaring daggers at the sushi roll Musa was holding up between her chopsticks.

“C’mon, just try it. You’ll like it.”

Stella slapped a hand over her mouth to stifle her gasp. Was this…?!

Stormy scrunched up her nose and squeezed her eyes shut tight, then after some reluctance, ate the sushi roll.

Stella’s own hand thankfully stifled her squeal as well. Were they on a date?!

“Well?” Musa asked with a smile.

Tecna was just returning to Alfea after going on her evening jog. She had the mind of a genius, which was why she knew it was imperative one kept their body in as good a shape as their mind. She was listening to music, but it was at a volume that wouldn’t make her go deaf when she got older (unlike Musa). It was thanks to that, she heard the voices.

Bloom had managed to convince Icy to go outside, to Icy’s displeasure. They’d gone to Gardenia Park for a picnic with Kiko and Pepe, without as much dragging as Bloom thought she’d have to do.

Kiko and Pepe were playing in puddles leftover from the rain last night. Icy was dressed to do battle with the sun. She had sunglasses on and even brought a parasol she made Bloom hold over her.

Then unexpectedly, Bloom heard a familiar voice.

“Is that you, Bloom?”

Bloom and Icy looked up at their interruption. Bloom lit up when she saw just who it was.

“Mitzi!” she cried, “I haven’t seen you in forever! How have you been?”

Mitzi crossed her arms and humphed, “None of your business.”

Icy narrowed her eyebrows. This chick was a bitch.

Mitzi spared her and the parasol Bloom was holding over her a passing, uninterested glance. She turned back to Bloom, pointing her thumb at her. “Is this your new girlfriend?”

Bloom turned to Icy. Icy arched an eyebrow at the look on her face. A slow grin grew on Bloom’s face, proverbial hearts in her eyes, and leaned into her side.

“NO!” Icy said, shoving Bloom away by her forehead.

Bloom pouted, removing her hand off her face, before turning back to Mitzi. “She’s just a friend,” she told her, Icy humphing at even that.

Mitzi smirked like a viper. “So you’re single?”

“Yes. Why?”

The temperature of Icy’s blood dropped to deadly subzero degrees. She shot a cold glare at Mitzi.

“No reason,” Mitzi said with a shrug, “But maybe you should think about giving me a call sometime.” She winked. “If you ever want someone to boss you around again.”

She turned, catching Icy’s eye and merely giving her a smug upturn of her chin, and left.

The next time it’d happened, the Winx and the Trix were in Magix, there to watch the Specialists in a race.

Icy, once again, had donned sunglasses for war, holding her parasol herself this time. Bloom still stood unnecessarily close beside her though, cheering for Sky.

“Fancy seeing a commoner like you here,” said a voice that Icy didn’t know, but that Bloom clearly did by the way her eyes sparkled.

“It’s more unusual to see you here, Diaspro,” Bloom said teasingly, “This isn’t normally your kind of scene.”

Diaspro flipped her blonde ringlets with a flippant humph.

Icy wrinkled her nose in disgust (and no, she did not humph, she just let air come out of her nose). This chick was even worse than Mitzi; she was a rich bitch. And probably bratty, spoiled and demanding… and no wonder Bloom had obviously dated her.

Then Icy tensed when she felt Darcy, Stormy and the Winx watching the three of them. Intently.

“I’m just here for Sky,” Diaspro said haughtily.

“Oh yeah. I always forget you two are friends,” Bloom giggled.

Diaspro humphed again. “So? Have you moved on yet? Not that I particularly care,” she said, checking over her nails.

“If you’re asking if I’m still single, then yes,” Bloom replied with a fond eye roll.

Diaspro made faux pouty lips. “Aw, does nobody else want you?”

Icy was gonna kill her.

“Well,” Diaspro then said, smirking, “If you ever get lonely, you’re welcome to call me up. I may take pity on you.”

She looked at Icy glaring icicles at her, smirked and humphed. She tossed her hair with a turn of her head, then went.

“Holy shit,” Darcy said, Stormy rolling her eyes next to her. And the Winx just started laughing.

Bloom frowned and smiled at the same time, confused, but amused. “What?” she asked.

The Winx laughed harder. Even Darcy and Stormy cracked a smile.

Layla sighed to herself. She was heading back by herself to Alfea from Magix, after an awkward date with Nebula.

She felt like such a fool for thinking Nebula was anything more than a bad girl. She wished she could go to her friends for comfort, but they knew nothing about her relationship with Nebula.

As the streetlights were starting to turn on, she stopped and frowned at the sensation she felt on her back. Like someone was watching her. She looked over her shoulder. Nothing out of the ordinary seemed to be behind her, but… that hooded guy. She was pretty sure she’d seen him before.

She was being followed.

Layla turned around and started walking a bit faster. She heard footsteps behind her, so she started walking faster. She thought it was her heart thundering in her ears, but then she realized there were more than one set of footsteps and they were getting louder. She started running and scrambled for her phone in her pocket.

She quickly called the person whose name sounded excessively in her brain with every rapid beat of her heart. Holding the ringing phone to her ear while she was running and panting, the footsteps behind her getting closer, she begged the person to pick up.

“Layla?” appeared a voice in her phone’s speakers.

“Anne, help—!”

A hand grabbed Layla’s arm.

Layla looked so out-of-place, unconscious in that hospital bed. This version of her was nothing like the beautiful and headstrong dancer who’d attracted her the first time she’d laid eyes on her.

Those bastards had really battered her. She knew the bruises and crusted blood on her face went down her body. She didn’t know what the doctors had all found, but she probably had a few broken bones too.

Nebula sighed deeply, rubbing her hands down her face and smearing her makeup.

“I’m sorry,” she said, even though Layla was asleep and couldn’t hear her. “I knew I should’ve broken it off sooner. I knew I shouldn’t have gotten… attached.”

She gazed at Layla’s face once more.

“And I’m sorry for what I said.”

Gently, she reached up and with the back of her knuckles, let them cascade along Layla’s cheek. She made sure her touch was featherlight, barely even making contact with her skin.

“You were not casual,” she whispered.

She dropped her arm at her side. Then got up.

Anne came into the room with a sandwich and a juice box on a tray. She froze at the sight of Nebula, but it wasn’t out of fright. Her gaze darted between her and Layla, then in the middle of them and how little distance was separating them, and glared at her.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Nebula was impressed. Anne had struck her as a kind, meek girl in class, but here she was, staring down Nebula with fierce protectiveness in her eyes. And possessiveness as well.

That was fine. Good for Layla, even. She wasn’t hers anymore.

“Relax. I was just leaving,” she said.

She walked past Anne. Anne let her without another word.

She looked back at Layla one last time in the doorway. Then left.

This would be the last time she ever saw her.

“That’s the last of them,” said Darcy, dusting off her hands. Not a scratch on her.

Not a scratch on any of them, standing over four groaning, grown men in immense pain on the ground.

“So what now?” asked Stormy.

She and Darcy looked to Icy, who was checking her phone.

With a severe expression on her face, she turned toward them, pocketing her phone. “We go to the hospital now,” she said, starting walking.

Musa was up out of her chair with a small grin—despite the red rim around her eyes—and running to Stormy, when the Trix waltzed into the waiting area.

While Stormy and Musa shared a private moment, and Darcy told the others details of how the ‘payback’ went—to (surprisingly) Flora’s satisfaction—Icy went straight to Bloom.

Bloom was curled up in an uncomfortable, waiting chair, arms around her knees; eyelids drooped over red eyes. When Icy’s familiar shadow fell over her, she looked up at Icy’s harsh scowl.

Except it didn’t stay harsh, or even a scowl. Icy’s face instead smoothed and her eyes turned into something as soft as silk.

Bloom felt a fresh wave of tears hit her. She was on her feet, practically burying herself into Icy, in a matter of seconds.

Icy wrapped an arm around her back and used her other hand to stroke through Bloom’s hair. And they remained as such for a long time.

When Layla awoke, she was in less pain than she thought she’d be. She was alone in her hospital room at first, so with nothing to do, she’d just gone to watching the clouds float by in the morning sky out the window.

A few moments later, Anne walked into the room and gasped.

“Layla, you’re awake!” she cried and ran to Layla’s bedside. She threw her arms around her and buried her face in her shoulder.

“Anne,” Layla breathed, relief and something more settling over her heart, “you came.” She hugged Anne back, laying her face on her opposite shoulder.

“Of course I came!” Anne exclaimed. She slowly pulled back to look at Layla’s face, placing her hands on her shoulders. “I got that call.”

Layla nodded. She remembered. “I know. Just…” She looked down. “We had that argument…”

Anne’s eyes widened in horror. “I didn’t mean what I said! I was just angry and…” Her face flushed and she averted her gaze. “Jealous.”

Layla blinked, her heart fluttering. It felt like hope.

“Jealous?” she asked softly.

Anne’s blush turned pinker. She stubbornly kept her gaze on Layla’s bed’s hospital sheets, but she took Layla’s hands.

“I know I turned you down once, but that was because I didn’t know I liked girls and that I liked… you,” she murmured.

Layla smiled. She lifted Anne’s chin up. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”

Anne nodded slowly. “I’m sorry it took me so long to realize. If you still feel the same way, I hope you’ll have me…”

Layla laughed. “Of course I do!”

She leaned in and kissed the big smile on Anne’s lips.
