Chapter Text
“Come on, it’s gotta be up there somewhere…”
“Hurry, or we’re gonna get caught!”
“Do you think Silly Creatures can smell Fraggles?”
Sally Cooper, a graduate student aiming for a doctorate, sometimes heard little voices coming from the walls of her workshop. She always reasoned it was the neighbours chattering nearby, but sometimes she liked to imagine little magical creatures living there, watching over her and blessing her with good luck.
Sally, known as Doc to most, also frequently received letters to her house addressed to “Gobo Fraggle”. Not knowing exactly what they were, she’d always leave them with the recycling, only for them to disappear the next day.
“Alright, I see it, I’m going for it!”
“Be careful! Don’t let the monster see us!”
A little creature poked his head out from the hole in the wall and scurried to the paper recycling bin, taking out the letter. Just as soon as he came in, he disappeared again, back down into the tunnels underneath the house.
“I got it, fellas!” The little creature held up the letter to his accompanying friends. “Let’s go back home and read it!”
This little creature was the Gobo Fraggle the letter was addressed to. Together, along with his little friend Wembley, and their wild housemate Red, they all scurried back into the tunnels.
“I got it! I got it!” Gobo burst into the cosy cave that he and his friends all lived in together.
“Oh, wonderful.” Mokey, the “mom friend” of the gang, set down the poem she was writing in her lap. “Where had your Uncle Matt gotten to this time?”
Gobo opened up the letter to find a postcard from Ottawa, Ontario inside, addressed to him from Matt, his uncle who had left the caves to travel Outer Space.
Dear Nephew Gobo,
Silly Creatures handle their young in such odd ways. In my travels, I discovered a land where small Silly Creatures are brought to exercise and train.
This odd place in Outer Space had a lot of things to climb on and run through. Some parts were almost like caves. This all occurs on top of a pit of tiny rocks. Among them, I found this very interesting crystal. Take a look around Fraggle Rock; you might find more of them down there!
Love, your Uncle Travelling Matt
Gobo took another look inside the envelope, and inside was indeed a little pink crystal. “So your uncle found a weird object and decided to not only touch it, but post it to us?!” Boober, watching from behind his curtain, flicked his tail. “I will never understand that Fraggle.”
“Well, it’s certainly a pretty thing,” mused Gobo, “but I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with it.” He passed it off to Mokey. “You’re into healing crystals and all that, right? Maybe you would like this.”
“Oh, thank you,” cooed Mokey as she examined the crystal. “It’s beautiful.”
Now wearing the crystal around her neck as a pendant, Mokey sat peacefully among the stalagmites, watching the Doozers work. She was counting how many Doozer sticks were in a particularly tall, intricate tower when she heard a crackling sound. She looked up at the roof of the caves, which had little cracks appearing in them, causing bits of rock to tumble to the ground.
“Alright, everyone, leave the towers for a bit!” Flange Doozer called to the other workers. “Get some Doozer cement and seal the cracks in the caves! If they break open, the ground will collapse and all of Fraggle Rock will be destroyed!”
Sensing the urgency, each Doozer toddled up the ramps to the roof of the caves to seal the cracks. Mokey was intrigued; the cracks were so small, could they really be that dangerous?
She felt a shaking over her head. She yelped and leapt out of the way as a series of rocks fell where she had once been sitting. Now she understood. That was not safe at all!
“What was that?” Her housemates came barreling out into the construction site, confused about the rumbling.
“The ceilings are cracking!” Mokey explained. “We need to help the Doozers seal them up!”
The Fraggles all lifted the Doozers up high, so they could reach the cracks and fill them with cement.
Up on the surface world, Doc’s dog Sprocket chased a little fly around the workshop. Without knowing, his paws hitting the floor was making all the shaking down in Fraggle Rock.
“Sprocket?” Doc looked up from her work. “Here, chase the ball and leave that fly alone!” She rolled a rubber ball towards Sprocket while shooing the fly out the open window.
“Ruff!” Sprocket went after the ball, continuing to cause cracks in the cave roofs.
“Come on!” The Fraggles bustled around, trying to help the Doozers fix the roofs before they all fell down.
Mokey wasn’t able to hold up Doozers any longer; she lowered her tired arms, running out of energy. The Doozers in her hands hopped down to instead use a ladder to reach the roof.
A twinkle of pink light attracted Mokey’s attention; it was the crystal on her necklace. She took it in her hand to examine it, and something incredible began to happen! She was swept up into a blast of light, and everything around her began to change. Her fuzzy green robe transformed into a long magenta gown, with white accents, long, draping sleeves, and little jewels studded across the collar. Her hair grew longer, turning a deep shade of pink that reminded her of mulberries, and pulled itself into a billowing ponytail decorated with tiny pieces of quartz. Although Fraggles rarely wore shoes, she suddenly found herself wearing white slippers with laces.
The light dissipated, and all the Fraggles and Doozers stared at Mokey’s new form. “Whoa, Mokey,” exclaimed Red, “what happened to you?”
Mokey looked at her new clothing. Seeing the crystal from Uncle Matt’s letter as a ring on her finger, a message began to ring in her ears.
“Guarding my home with knowledge and compassion~ I am Cure Wisdom!” A spark of light burst behind Cure Wisdom as she announced herself.
Another tremor rang through the rock. The Fraggles and Doozers stumbled, scrambling to get back to sealing the cracks in the roof. Cure Wisdom, feeling a strange energy coursing through her body, clasped her hands together and focused her mind. A pink bubble surrounded her, and burst open to let pink sparkles shower the caves, magically filling in the cracks and sealing them as if they were never there.
“Oh, wow, that was incredible!” Wembley scampered over to Cure Wisdom. “Mokey…Cure Wisdom, you did it!”
“Is that what the crystal does?” Gobo asked. “That’s amazing!”
“Hey, Matt said there could be others hidden in the rock!” Red remembered. “If we find them, we could all get powers!”
“Look at this outfit!” Boober circled around Cure Wisdom. “The stitching, the colour harmony…mwah!”
In a flash of pink light, Cure Wisdom’s magic disappeared, leaving plain old Mokey in her place. “I…I don’t know how it happened. I just saw the crystal glowing, and suddenly…I was a hero.”
The crystal had returned to its pendant state. Mokey looked it up and down. “What kind of secrets do you hide?” She wondered.
Tired out from chasing after things all day, Sprocket flumped down in his bed. “Worn stiff, huh?” Doc asked from her desk. “What a rough day for you, doing nothing but playing.”
“Woof.” Uninterested in hearing any sass, Sprocket turned his head and laid down for a nap.
