''I am out for a bit, okay Y/N?'' The top-grade student of the country asked as he opened the door leading up to the pavement which would bring him to his destination. ''Yes of course! I'll see you soon Light!'' The girl replied from the kitchen. The moment she heard the door close she ran upstairs into her brothers' room.
Y/N Yagami, the middle child of the Yagami household was ten months younger than her big brother, although her intelligence went head-to-head with his. This was the reason why she waited for hours until her brother left, almost turning 18 she knew her birthday present would be hidden somewhere in his room.
Opening the door she immediately ran to the closet, opening every, single drawer and looking under every piece of clothing, but nothing. Over the years Light had gotten better at hiding her presents since she would find them every year, but he always kept them in his room.
After around ten minutes of looking she went to his desk, the only place which she hadn't touched yet, she preferred to look in parts to keep an overview.
She looked at the desk, seeing a key in a drawer, he didn't have this before, this was out of the ordinary. So she opened the drawer, finding a black notebook in it, his diary. Light wasn't a person who would have a diary, he would find it too risky to have his thoughts out in the open, if he indeed had a diary, he would make sure it was impossible to find, this was a decoy to hide something.
As natural as it felt the girl went on her knees and looked under the drawer, finding a small hole in the wood. ''Got it, too easy.'' She stood up, proud of her findings, removed the diary and took a ballpoint pen to take out the ink reservoir.
Inserting the reservoir into the hole made a fake bottom come up, something she swiftly removed looking into the contraption. ''Light, I have to give this one to y- what even is this? It's like a circuit- are you serious? The house would've blown up if I was being reckless! This is way too serious for hiding a birthday present.'' The girl looked in awe and confusion as she studied the circuit, ignoring the book that was sitting in between.
''This doesn't look like a birthday present. If that was a decoy diary this must be the real one.'' A grin slipped up on her face as she carefully took the book. ''Death Note? What is this?'' Looking swiftly through the pages her eyes widened, yet no reaction came out. She immediately put everything back in place and ran to her room.
''This can't seriously be happening? Am I going crazy? No, no that can't be all the names were written in there, no way he'd do that just to keep track of all Kira killings. I always watch the news, some of those names were never broadcasted, ever."
"Light Yagami, my brother, is Kira."

It had been two weeks since the middle child of the Yagami household found out her brother was Kira. Although she had thought about going to the police with these findings, she decided not to. Y/N Yagami was a neutral person with a neutral standpoint in general, which includes the Kira case. It didn't concern her as long as it didn't negatively affect her family, and since her brother is Kira, her family would most likely be safe, at least for the next few years.
She believed the Death Note would be able to make her brother crazy, something which was impossible to avoid, Light was intelligent and he'd known that himself. But he still decided to take this role in his name, and therefore the girl wasn't allowed to have any opinion on it, it was his choice and his only.
The first time the girl had seen the creature which followed her brother around, she tensed up and internally freaked out. Yet every time he heard him speak with her brother she got more used to it. Ryuk was his name, a shinigami he was. The conversations the two had made her interested in the creature, knowing she would never be able to talk to him.
After a while she got used to his presence, she'd even be a little excited to see him standing behind Light in the corner of her eye. She found out he liked apples, and since Light always got them for him she began buying them too, saying that she did it for Light since she noticed him buying so many apples the last few weeks, assuming he loved them.
Something she didn't know was that the shinigami knew she could see him. After all, it was his Death Note she touched, of course, he'd notice the new, partial owner of his book. He didn't tell Light of course, simply because he never asked, nor would he answer if he did. The knowledge of the second sibling didn't necessarily bother Ryuk, so telling Light wouldn't give something in return. Plus the apples which were given to him were another reason why he wouldn't make her knowledge known.

Today was the middle child's 18th birthday, after finding the Death Note she didn't try to look for the present anymore, too dumbfounded with her findings, new knowledge and new interests. Because it was her birthday she was able to choose what kind of cake she wanted, one of which was an apple pie. See, Y/N Yagami wanted to get to know the shinigami, but in presence of her brother, that was in no way, shape or form possible. So she chose an apple pie, in hopes of luring the God of Death in.
After the celebration she went upstairs to go to sleep, taking the leftover pie with her, opening the box and putting it down on her desk. She acted as if she went to her shower, which was connected to her bedroom and waited patiently behind the door. Since she was able to see the God, she was also blessed with the possibility of hearing him.
Of course, the shinigami wasn't stupid and knew the sibling wanted to speak to him. Speaking the truth he had an interest in conversating with her too. So he did what the girl wanted and went to her room, taking a slice of the apple pie that was sitting on her desk.
Something Ryuk didn't expect, was the girl slightly and unnoticeably opening the door, just to watch.
"You know I can see you, right?" The God of Death spoke in between bites while looking out of the window, making the girl hitch, staying in the exact spot as she was already. "I've known that you could see me since the moment you touched my Death Note. It's mine, of course, I'd notice." He grinned, turning around.
"Does Light know?" The girl spoke after a few minutes of silence. "No, I did not need to tell him nor did he ever ask." A sigh of relief was heard. "Did you like my apples?" "I enjoyed them thoroughly Y/N, thank you."
For some reason hearing the shinigami speak the girl's name aloud made her tense, trying to make it unnoticeable. So she opened the door and walked towards her bed, laying down on it with her legs hanging off of them. "Do you like my brother's presence?" "I wouldn't say I didn't, it's a change of events, often very amusing." "I thought so." The girl hummed back, thinking deeply. The two spoke for some time, enjoying each other's company more than expected. At some point the shinigami had positioned himself next to the girl on her bed, staring at the ceiling.

It was quiet for some time, where both didn't speak a word, just laid next to one another. Ryuk could go back to Light, but he didn't need him and had told him he would be flying over town for some time, he didn't need to worry about getting back soon and he didn't want to, he liked the young woman's company.
Something he didn't realise was the time passing by, he looked outside the window and felt a shift in the bed. He looked down and saw a sleeping Y/N who was cuddled up against him, hands around his waist.
The shinigami smiled and caressed her hair gently, smiling to himself.
