A Stop in the Journey

A late night camping brings Minoth and Addam together for a moment.

Notes:

Prompt: Journey

Work Text:

 “Restless all by yourself, handsome?”

Addam only chuckled, coughing as he inhaled some of the residual smoke emitted from the fading fire. “Not all by myself. Get a load of Jin.”

Minoth turned around. He was greeted with Jin’s back, turned around, arms crossed and standing completely still, sword stuck in the ground beside him but still at the ready with its hilt pointed skyward.

Minoth waved him off, sitting down next to Addam in the rough, sandy ground. The faint light still arising from the fire only barely colored their surroundings, with the stars in the sky showing the rest of the path forward. “We’re a ways away from the next rest stop. You should rest up when you can. Restore your energy.”

“You don’t need to play mum for me, Minoth.” Addam erupted in a smile. “That’s my job!”

Minoth bit his lip. As much as he wanted to quip around with Addam, it didn’t seem like the time. A small respite in the middle of the night opened up more opportunities for personal time, even if Minoth wasn’t the type.

Cutting through people as he always seemed to do, Addam looked at him directly. “You look concerned, Minoth.”

“It’s… it’s not anything important,” Minoth brushed him off.

“Oh, come now. Spit it out. We’re around a fire, it’s a time to share our thoughts.”

“You…” Minoth sighed, trying to finally get something off his chest. “You seem like you’re hiding your feelings. From all of us.”

Addam let a moment pass, and huffed. “I guess you’d be the first to notice.”

 “What’s that mean?” Minoth barked.

“Oh, nothing. Just taking the piss.”

 “You old bastard.”

A moment of silence passed, filled only by the soft crackles of the fire. Jin stood still in the distance, unmoving.

 “I worry, sometimes.”

 “About Malos?”

 “Well, yes. But mainly her.”

 “Mythra?”

“Exactly,” Addam paused, turmoil in his voice. “Maybe I’m too harsh on her.”

“You don’t think it’s her own problem?”

“Well that’s exactly it. If I don’t help her out of her shell, who will?”

 “A good question.”

“Minoth, say, if Mythra was a character in a story… How would you…” Addam waved his hands, as if trying to grasp what he was trying to put his finger on. “Oh, you know…”

 “Develop her character?”

 “Yes, something like that.”

Minoth considered the question for a moment. Looking into Addams eyes, he breathed in, trying to calm a suddenly accelerated heart rate. “Well, I’d pair her up with someone like you.”

Addam only chuckled. He chuckled, closing his eyes, opening them again only to once again look at the fire. “Cheers. That really means a lot.”
