London, England
Chapter Text
It was Early in the Morning, London was a busy city that sits in South-East England standing on the River Thames. It is home to landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, and Big Ben. A few miles west of the busy city itself in Hounslow about 10 Miles from Heathrow Airport, a girl woke up early at 7:30 in the Morning and walked downstairs where her mother was cooking breakfast. Her name was Eleanor but her family and friends call her Ellie. She's only 6 years old and is currently in school. Her mother Melanie is a local Dispatcher at the Airport for the Airside Safety Team after serving with the Royal Air Force and the London Fire Brigade. Her sister Jodie is her eldest sister at 12 years old. Her brother Jackson is 7 years older than her. He is the eldest child in the family at 13 years old. Her father Lawrence is a local mechanic and tow truck operator in Chelsea. Everyone in his job and his family and friends call him Larry. "Good Morning, Ellie... Did you sleep well?" Melanie asked as she made breakfast.
"Yes, Mum. What's for breakfast today?"
"We have waffles, pancakes, toast... What would you like for Breakfast?"
"I'll have a pancake please, Mum."
"Right, you are, Ellie. One pancake coming right up."
Ellie smiled as Melanie started making her pancake for breakfast. Melanie is great at cooking but sometimes lets Lawrence do the cooking when she isn't around. He finally came in after he got ready for work. He was already late. "Morning, you two," Lawrence called.
"Morning, Dad." They both replied.
"Hey, Mel... I'm already late. I have to get to work after I take Jodie to school. Is it possible I can have Breakfast to go?"
"Yeah, sure. I got you." Melanie replied.
"Thanks, love."
"Dad. Come on... We're gonna be late." Jodie called to him.
"Hold on, Jodie. I'm coming. Just waiting for Mum to get me breakfast to go."
Melanie handed him a box that had a sandwich, some Earl-Grey tea, and a rubbish bag should he have his breakfast whilst at work. Larry and Jodie later went out the door so that they could get to where they needed to be. Jack came in a few minutes later looking very tired. His hair was long and it needed a haircut. Ellie was soon handed her breakfast and some syrup. "There we are, Ellie. Tuck in." Melanie said handing Ellie some utensils.
"Thanks, Mum."
Ellie began eating her breakfast as Jack began looking in the refrigerator. He was looking for something to eat but had no luck. He tried picking up a small pack of Yoghurt but Melanie noticed it because she had excellent hearing and looked at him. "Jackson Phillips!! that's Dad's Yoghurt. Don't even think about eating it!!" She shouted.
"Sorry, mum... I woke up like this... I'm so tired I don't wanna go to school right now."
"Jack... Have you been up late again?"
"Maybe."
"Come on, Jack. I know when you say you maybe stayed up past your bedtime. Ellie here slept well because she knew she needed sleep because she has school too."
"Really? Why does Ellie get to help you do my chores?"
"Because you're out with your friends most of the time."
"Well, maybe she can join Dad at the repair shop. Maybe she can spend time with him in the tow yard and crush other people's cars. If she were doing her chores beside mine, then-"
"Then you would have been up early like Ellie was and then there wouldn't be a problem." Melanie interrupted.
"Mum! I don't need to be the one that gets in trouble all the time! Did Ellie ever get in trouble?"
"Yeah, when she forgot that she had to wait for Dad or me when she rode her scooter down the streets of our neighbourhood with Jodie. Anyways, Ellie has school today... And so do you. Get yourself ready before I call you in late. Mr. Vaisey wouldn't be happy about you being late. Would he?"
"Yes, Mum... Mr. Vaisey wouldn't be happy with me being late."
"Ok. Now, off you go to get ready for school."
Jack went upstairs to his bedroom to get ready for School while Ellie finished her breakfast and got herself ready for School. Ellie was full of Energy after she had breakfast that Melanie had made for her. Ellie came out with her school bag in hand as Jack was in his School Uniform and his school bag in hand. Jack went ahead to catch the bus to his school and Melanie drove Ellie to her school. As soon as Jack arrived at the bus stop, he saw his friends who were confused when they saw him. "What's up, Jack?" They asked.
"Ah, don't start yet, my friends. My mum got me in trouble again."
"Really? What happened?"
"She heard from my little sister that I wasn't doing my chores and they did them for me."
"Maybe you should at least listen to your mum. But maybe your sister needs a break. Has she always been causing trouble?"
"Well, no. My mum always believes she can get herself ready for school and that way she can drive her to school on the way to work."
"Really? Where at?"
"Heathrow Airport."
"Wow! Your mum picked the right job. She gets to work at Heathrow and your dad is a tow truck driver. Do you think your dad can fix my dad's car?"
"Yeah. He can."
"Alright then... My dad can stop by later and challenge him."
"Oh, well, I don't know about that."
"£50 says otherwise..."
"And I'm in."
The bus soon arrived and Jack had his bus pass ready. The driver pulled the bus over and Jack and his friends boarded the bus for their school. He hoped that he wouldn't get in trouble with his school teachers again.
Elsewhere in London,
Melanie and Ellie were on the road to her school. Ellie had a great time at the school. The only problem with her school is that it's not near Heathrow Airport. It sat just 30 minutes from Central London and 40 Minutes from Heathrow. Ellie had her school bag all ready to go. Melanie focused on driving while Ellie was organizing her school bag. "Are you all set, Ellie?" Melanie asked.
"Yes, Mum."
"Wonderful. Sorry if I had to yell at Jack. I know that you don't want to hear me yell but he was not like himself. I'll have Dad talk to him later. Ok?"
"Ok, Mum."
"Oh and erm... I meant to tell you this... But I forgot. Today, I have to take you to see Dr. Williams. Don't worry... It's just for the school. I've been behind with it because I work a long time at the airport. Ok?"
"Oh... Erm... Ok."
"I'll be there, love. Alright? Dr. Williams knows what she thinks is best for us."
Ellie nodded and Melanie kept going along the motorway before they came across the turn for the road that takes them to the school. The school was soon coming into view and Melanie parked the car. They both walked to the school once Ellie gathered her school supplies. Ellie was at a Primary School and her headteacher was outside monitoring the arrival of the students. "Ah... Melanie. What a sight to see you here. How's the family?" She asked.
"Ah. The family's doing great. Jodie's already at School and Jack has been nothing but trouble. Always out with his friends. But he's still able to go to school and learn. He's heading to Rochdale where his school is. I wish there could be a place in London."
"Yeah... I haven't heard much about it. But that's for the next meeting. Anyway... I heard you had some tough situations within the house?"
"Yeah, I forgot Ellie had a doctor's visit today."
"Oh. How did that happen?"
"It's a long story but the doctor called me earlier to schedule an appointment for her but I wasn't with Ellie or at home. Unfortunately, I was at work."
"Ah... Has the Dispatching at the airport got to you?"
"Yeah. I wish I could make it easier."
"I do too."
"I'll be leaving my youngest one here in safe hands with you. Alright?"
"Sure. I'll look after her."
"Gratefully appreciated. Thank you."
Melanie came down to Ellie's height. they looked at each other before Melanie smiled at her youngest daughter. "Ok, Ellie. Have a good day in School. I'll pick you up later. Mrs. Harris will look after you. Alright?" Melanie told Ellie.
Ellie nodded. She was still nervous but she had hope that Melanie would do everything to make her happy. She gave her mother a big hug before she went off to class. Melanie went ahead off to Heathrow Airport. Melanie's friend Olivia Harris was the headteacher of Ellie's school. She escorted Ellie to her classroom. "Ms. Mason. Can I have a word?" She asked Ellie's teacher.
"Of course."
Ellie's teacher stepped outside to talk with her. Ellie was soon in her classroom. They had a conversation while Ellie was organizing her school bag for the first class of the day. A few moments later, her teacher came back and went to her desk. "Alright... I hope everyone has had a wonderful morning, so far. I'm very happy to see you all. Ok... So, today we have a lot to cover. We're starting off with History. Who can start us off by completing this question "Which countries form the United Kingdom and what are the biggest cities in those countries?" Following that, we will be looking at the map of the U.K. and get to make flags of these countries." She spoke.
"I know!" One of her classmates spoke.
"Ok, Harry. Take it away."
"England, Scotland, Ireland, and America?"
"Not quite. But you got the first two right. Does anybody want to help Harry?"
Ellie raised her hand to answer the question. The teacher looked around before she saw Ellie's hand up high. "Ah, Eleanor. What are the countries that form the United Kingdom and what are the biggest cities in those countries?" She asked Ellie.
"England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. The capital city of England is the capital of the whole country which is London. Cardiff is the Capital City of Wales, Belfast is the Largest City in Northern Ireland, and Edinburgh is the Capital City of Scotland."
"Very good, Eleanor. Is it ok if I call you Ellie?"
"Of course. My mum calls me Ellie all the time."
"Thank you, Ellie. Now. Where are the countries located?"
"England is located under Scotland and to the right of both Wales and Northern Ireland. Wales is to the left of England, Scotland is located above England and Wales, and Northern Ireland is to the left of England, Scotland, and Wales."
"Excellent work, Ellie. I'm impressed. Who can name the ocean that surrounds the U.K. and tell me where they connect to?"
Several students raised their hands and it was difficult at first to make a decision until she saw one not far to call on. "Kyle. What is the ocean that surrounds the United Kingdom?" She asked.
"Erm... The English Channel... and er... The Atlantic Ocean?" He answered.
"That's correct. Can you tell me where the English Channel leads to?"
"France?"
"Good. Now. Where does the Atlantic Ocean lead to?"
"America?"
"Right again. I'm so amazed at how much we have been learning. Now... We're going to read a map of the world to find the U.K. What I would like everyone to do now is to take a look at the map and point out where the U.K. can be seen."
As they all focused on the map, Ellie paid very close attention to the teacher.
In Rochdale,
Jack had just arrived and he was late because the bus took him to the school on the motorway. The other students were let off the bus. As they were coming off the bus, the headteacher of Jack's School came out and was not impressed. "Where have you lot been? School started already. And Mr. Phillips, I like to speak with you and Ms. Campbell." He said sternly.
"Now, sir?"
"Yes, now!"
"Ok. Ok."
Jack was escorted to the head's office where several of his teachers were. His teachers were not happy. They were also concerned for him. They had a long meeting this morning and they wanted to address it. His teachers and the school's headteacher were all in the office and then Jack had to ask. "What is this? Some sort of intervention?" he asked.
"Just hear us out, Jack." One of his teachers told him.
"Jack. We're all concerned that you've been failing your classes. Mr. Vaisey had a talk with us this morning about you. We're all worried you won't be able to move on to the next year." Ms. Campbell told him.
"We just want to make sure you're getting the right education here. But as we see it... It seems you're not. Do you not have a way to get here other than the bus or the underground?" His Math teacher asked him.
"No, sir. I don't. My mum works dispatch at Heathrow. My dad's a tow truck driver. So far, my family has been focusing more on my younger sister. Not the first one... The second one."
"Where there's a will, there's a way." His English teacher added.
"Mr. Budgen... This isn't what this is about. This Pupil needs help. He needs an education."
"Sorry, Mr. Clarkson... It seems my head wasn't focusing right. Seems to me I have just been listening."
"Enough." The headteacher intervened.
"Look, Jack. All we want for you is to continue the year strong." His Science teacher added.
"I know. It's what you all want... But something is clearly wrong here..." Jack replied.
"We know, Jack. That's why we're making this easier. Today, we'll be assigning you a Partner in each class. Our classes may do individual work but we want you to establish the true meaning of teamwork." Mr. Clarkson replied.
"Sir. How is that possible?"
"I think what I know is this... You have been out with your friends from school again. But not getting work done. I think it's time we intervened because we had calls from your mum and dad about this. As I can relate to their situation, I think it's time you had to learn the meaning of teamwork."
"Yes, sir."
"Now... Jack. I know you may not like having a partner. But I am confident you and your new partner can help bring your grades up." The headteacher advised.
"Yes, sir."
"Do you think it would help you if we had a process to select a partner?"
"I think it would help."
"I hear you like to place bets. Right?"
"We don't actually place bets on sports, it's mostly on what we see."
"Ah. How would this work for you? A bet of £50 for the right selection. We'll have this for each class. A total of £600."
"I'll tell my mates that they will give me £600 for the right partner and it's £50 per class."
"Yep. I'm sure you will."
"You're on."
"We'll have some posters up around the classroom on the newsboard."
"Perfect."
The headteacher and Jack shook hands on the deal before Jack headed out to class. He knew this was going to go well. He was soon in class. All of his classmates were delighted to see him.
In Chiswick,
Jodie was having lunch at her school. Her friends were happy to see her this morning when she arrived. She looked at the options for lunch. There weren't that many as there are standards for school lunches in the UK. Once Jodie picked up her lunch, she found a seat with her friends. They were concerned for her. "What's wrong, Jodie?" One of them asked.
"My dad's always driving me to school and I am mostly late. But nothing has been made as of yet. Changes in our morning routine are yet to come. My mum's very busy as she works at Heathrow. Yet she still has to drive my sister to school."
"Really? How's your sister doing?"
"I imagine she's doing well."
"Well, that's good to hear. I'm sure we'll hang out in Hounslow. Do you think she'll like it if you're not with her most of the time?"
"Hmm... I'll ask my mum and see if I can bring her with me to one of the places we hang out at. If not, we can invite you to my house. Alright?"
"Sounds fair. By the way... Might want to be careful. I think Jasmine is not a happy person today."
"Why? What makes you say that, Kylie?"
"Amanda and I saw her take out Holly today. Holly was sent to the hospital after class. Jasmine was sent to the Cooler."
"Ah. Right."
Just then, Jasmine saw Jodie and she wanted to do what she does best. Bullying is her way of getting things done. But Jodie knows not to fight back and ignore her. She looked at Jodie. "Oi! That's my seat. Why are you here?!" She asked angrily.
"Jasmine... Leave her alone. She's got nothing to do with you." Amanda replied.
"Leave it... I will handle this... Face it, Phillips... Your mum won't be a good dispatcher... All she will do is forget about you and all you have to do is walk to Chiswick."
"You know what. I've had enough of your arguments, Jasmine. Right now, I am fine. Things will be done one day. I am hanging out with my friends. You are nothing but a bully."
"Really... Ok, Phillips. Hit me. Hit me if you want to."
"Why should I? Violence is not the answer."
"Then how's this?"
Jasmine dumped Jodie's lunch all over Jodie. That made Jodie form some fists, and raise her arms in anger. Jasmine started punching Jodie but never hit her because she blocked them. The crowd gathered and there were cheers for the fight in the lunchroom. The two pulled at each other's hair and fought until several students surrounded them cheering. Jodie's friends Kylie and Amanda were pulling Jodie away from Jasmine until a teacher came in and broke up the fight. "OI!!! Everyone!! BACK UP RIGHT NOW!!! BACK UP!! BREAK IT UP!!! BREAK IT UP!!! GET BACK TO LUNCH!!! RIGHT NOW!!!" He shouted before looking to Jodie, Kylie, Amanda, and Jasmine.
"You lot!! Cooler!! NOW!!!"
Jodie and the others went straight to the cooler which was used for Discipline in the school. They went to separate seats in the room. It didn't take long for the teacher to come back from the Lunchroom. He wasn't happy with them. "Right. You four. I'm gonna say this again. We do not fight in this school. Fighting is serious and some incidents like this can get the Police involved. You're lucky this was an isolated incident. But I am not happy with either of you. What happened in there?" He asked.
"We were just enjoying lunch peacefully when Jasmine came up to Jodie trying to force her to give up her seat. We know Holly is in Hospital because of her." Kylie spoke.
"Really? How did that happen?"
"Something about money... But... there was more to be said."
"Right, Thank you, Kylie. Amanda. Have you got anything to say?"
"We were just trying to separate Jodie from Jasmine. We knew she was angry at Jasmine. Jodie would never hurt anyone." Amanda answered.
"Ok. I see. Thank you, girls. Jodie? Is this true?"
"Yes, sir. Jasmine was speaking about me not being able to come to school because of my family situation... I did say I wanted to be with my friends but she kept talking to me."
"Not true!" Jasmine shouted.
"Hey, you're the one that sent Holly to the hospital!!"
"No, I didn't she's literally faking it!"
"Alright. Alright. ENOUGH!!!" The teacher shouted.
The two stopped arguing. The teacher looked at the four of them. Just as they stopped arguing, the headteacher came in. "Ah. Mr. Lawson. I must say you did a fine job breaking up the fight." He said.
"Thank you, Mr. Kingston. But I think we have our prime suspects. Mr. Kingston, meet Jasmine Henderson, Kylie Hall, Amanda Adams, and Jodie Phillips."
"Right... Ok. Any statements were taken?"
"Yeah, erm... Kylie and Amanda weren't actually fighting, they were just trying to separate Jodie from Jasmine to prevent another fight."
"That's a shame. From what other students saw and told me, they said Jasmine started it."
"True... But who is to blame?"
"Yeah. Good question." Mr. Kingston looked at Jasmine and Jodie. He didn't seem very angry but he was not happy.
Jasmine and Jodie looked up at the headteacher and they didn't say a word. He looked at them before he decided on their punishment. "Ms. Henderson, As I have heard about the incident between you and Holly and this ongoing incident, you are suspended for 2 weeks on a count of Violent Conduct and are hereby ordered to join a non-bullying Program." He said.
"You serious, sir? I'm not the one who started it! Phillips here is the one who started this mess!!"
"That's enough Jasmine. It's a punishment I have to decide."
"What about me, sir?" Jodie asked.
"Ms. Phillips. As you were involved in the fight at lunch, you will also be suspended. However, you are suspended for only 5 days as you were not the instigator. We'll meet after your suspension on the new changes."
"Yes, sir. Erm... Will my parents know about this? My mum works at Heathrow."
"They will. But I think your dad is driving around London right now. I'll call him. We'll arrange a meeting right now if that's ok."
"That would be great, sir. Sorry for the Fight in the lunchroom."
"Not a problem, Jodie... It's just... You have to keep your anger where it belongs. There are other ways to respond. but fighting won't solve it."
"Right."
"Mr. Lawson, will you please send Jasmine to my office and send Jodie with Mrs. Montoya to the locker rooms for a fresh new Uniform? Oh, and send Kylie and Amanda back to class."
"I'll get to it."
"Thank you, Eddie. Oh, and Call one of Jodie's parents. Preferably her dad."
"Right away."
Jodie was sent to the locker rooms to find a new school uniform and Jasmine was sent to the headteacher's office for a meeting with her and the parents. Kylie and Amanda went to class already and Mr. Vaisey went to call Jasmine's parents. Eddie called Larry who was Jodie's dad. Larry was out in Fulham when he heard his phone in his office. He went to it and picked it up. "Hello. Chelsea Towing Service. Larry Speaking. How can I help?" He said.
"Hi, erm. Is this Lawrence Phillips."
"Yes. Who is this?"
"Mr. Phillips. It's Eddie Lawson, Jodie's Math teacher."
"Ah, Mr. Lawson. What can I do for you?"
"I'm afraid I need you to come to the school. Your daughter's been involved in an altercation at lunch. Can you come round and we'll talk to Mr. Kingston?"
"Of course. I'll be there. Michael and I go way back. I'm sure Jodie didn't mean to do anything wrong."
"No problem. I'll see you then."
Their call ended and Larry headed out in his towing Van. His colleagues saw him leave. "I'll be right back. My daughter just ended up in trouble at school. Kenny. You're in charge until I get back."
"Right, you are, Larry."
Larry left for Chiswick where Jodie's School was. He hoped that Jodie wasn't suspended for something that wasn't allowed in the school. He wanted to tell Melanie what happened but he forgot his phone.
Out at Ellie's School,
It was the afternoon hours. Melanie arrived and she locked the car. She was still in her Airport Safety Hi-Visibility Jacket when she was coming to the school to pick up Ellie. She headed for the front desk of the school and the secretary looked up. "Can I help you, Miss?" She asked.
"Yes. I'm here to pick up my daughter. She has a doctor's appointment today."
"Ok. I can tell your surname is Phillips. Is your daughter's name Eleanor?"
"How did you know?"
"Mrs. Harris told me."
"Ah. Right. yeah."
The secretary went ahead and went off to find Ellie. Melanie waited patiently for Ellie and the secretary before she came back with Ellie. Ellie ran over to Melanie and she gave her a hug. Melanie didn't let go until Ellie held her hand. Melanie and Ellie left for the car. Ellie was soon in the car with her seatbelt on and Melanie started the car.
While on the drive,
Melanie kept getting her radio calls from London Heathrow because she used her Airport Safety car while driving to the Clinic which is 45 minutes from Ellie's school. She had a look in the mirror. Ellie was back there looking in the mirror. "You have a good day, love?" Melanie asked.
"Yes, Mum. We learned about the United Kingdom."
"That's wonderful! What did you do today?"
"We tried to guess the four nations in the country."
"Cool. Did you get to do a map of the UK?"
"Yeah! I did it very perfectly!"
"I love to see it when we get home. Ok, love?"
"Ok, Mum."
"Dr. Williams is waiting for us. I meant to come as soon as I had time but I got caught up sending airplanes to the stand. Ok? Sorry if I was late."
"It's ok, Mum."
Melanie smiled and continued driving to the clinic using the motorway. She kept going on the motorway until she came to the street where it was before she turned on the road where she could see it just as she turned right. It was off of her left and she pulled into a parking space and parked her car. Ellie and Melanie soon headed into the building and they went to the reception desk. the receptionist looked up at them. "Can I help you?" she asked.
"Yes. We had a 1:00 appointment with Dr. Williams?"
"Oh. Yeah... I forgot. Sorry. Who was it for?"
"Eleanor Phillips."
"Oh. Ok? Let me see... if I have uh... Yep. Here we go. 1:00 pm for Eleanor Phillips with Dr. Williams."
"That's it."
"Go on ahead through the open door and I'll escort you to a room."
"Ok."
As soon as Melanie and Ellie were in the exam room, Ellie sat in an open chair looking around. She had a look on her face that she was nervous. Melanie never left her side. She had her Hi-visibility vest from the Airport still on her. Moments later, a knock on the door was heard and the door opened. "Hello again. Sorry, I'm late. I've been organizing my papers. How have you been today?" A blonde-haired female asked.
"We're doing great. I had to pick up the youngest one from school. I forgot to schedule it before the Year started."
"That's not a problem. I've had parents forget to schedule their annual visits. I see you did as well, but... I'm sure you have a chance to work it out for next year."
"Right."
"Ok... And this visit you scheduled was for... Ellie. Right?"
"Yeah. She just got picked up from school today. I have her school located 45 minutes from this place."
"Yikes... I can tell you need to make changes."
"Yeah, I do. But I'll deal with that later."
"Alright. I'm sure you will."
Ellie looked at her mother before she saw another person in the room. She recognized her and the same person talking to Melanie recognized Ellie. "Hi, Ellie. I hear you had to come here from school. Hm?" She said.
"Yeah. I do want to go back to school tomorrow."
"Yeah. It is fun for you. I'm sure you like being in school."
"That's right."
"Ok... Well... I won't make this long for you two. But, I like to take a look at how healthy you are. Ok, Ellie?"
Ellie nodded and Melanie looked at Dr. Williams. She wanted to know how well Ellie was doing as well. "I'm still here, love. Alright? Go on. I'm right here." Melanie told her youngest daughter.
Ellie went over with Dr. Williams. She looked nervous at first but felt safe with the two adults in the room. "Are you ready, Ellie?" Dr. Williams asked.
"Yeah."
Ellie stepped up and made herself comfortable on the exam table. Dr. Williams sat down in her chair and was next to the exam table alongside Ellie. Melanie was next to her daughter and she sat down beside her. "You having a good day, Ellie?" She asked.
"Yeah. I learned about the 4 countries in our country."
"Really? That's wonderful?"
"Which one is your favourite?" Melanie asked.
"England."
"Ah. England. I grew up here in Manchester. Do you like Football?" Dr. Williams added.
"She always loves the Manchester United Football team," Melanie replied.
"Oh. Really? Well, I'm a fan of Manchester United too."
"Yeah. I'm sure you and Ellie have something in common with Football."
"True."
"Alright."
Dr. Williams had set her papers down and started her exam. Melanie stayed alongside Ellie as Dr. Williams checked her blood pressure. Ellie knew how it worked from the last time she was in for a yearly visit. She had a dream of working with the NHS.
Out in Chiswick,
Larry arrived at Jodie's school and locked his van. He went to the main office and Mr. Lawson was waiting for Larry to arrive with Mr. Kingston alongside him. Larry was concerned for Jodie and about the incident at Lunch. "Mr. Phillips. Thanks for coming as soon as we called. I'm sorry we had to meet under these circumstances. I sure hope Melanie can show up." Mr. Kingston spoke.
"Thanks. And I thought Jodie was in trouble."
"Well... She is. I decided to suspend Jodie from school for 5 days. She had no way of instigating the fight. We suspended the person responsible for the fight as well."
"I'm sure glad this whole mess here is cleaned up. I'll talk to her. Shame it had to be that way."
"She did tell me she felt sorry."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Jodie still has a chance. I'm surprised she managed to come here."
"I can tell. My son Jack is in Rochdale. It's in Greater Manchester. He needs to be at a place where he can learn from the best."
"Well, we are more than welcome to have Jack as a student here."
"Great. I'll put it in for next year."
"Good idea."
"Sorry, Melanie can't be here. She had to take the younger one to her annual doctor's visit."
"Right. Well, Jodie can go home with you now. We got her a new Uniform."
"Very well. I'll take care of her on the way home."
"You got a tow truck job, do you?" Mr. Lawson asked.
"Yeah? Why?"
"Any chance you can have her take 5 days to bring back her motivation after this mess?"
"Of course. How?"
"We were thinking you and Jodie could take time to do some repairs together on the tow trucks and other cars."
"Hm. Not a bad idea."
"There it is."
"Say no more. We have a deal."
"Very well."
Jodie came out and she hugged her dad before they waved goodbye to the two teachers and they left in Larry's van before heading back to Chelsea. Larry had the chance to talk to Jodie about her fight at Lunch. "So... What happened to get you suspended, love?" he asked.
"It was Jasmine. She was speaking about me not being able to come to school because of our family situation... I did say I wanted to be with my friends but she kept talking to me. Then we nearly went at each other and got hurt. She spilled lunch all over me." Jodie replied.
"Really? Wow... Erm... You know, Jodie. I used to get in trouble at school too. I was in class this one time and a bully came up and did the basic bully tricks before he left me at the school without anyone knowing. I did find my way home though."
"Really?"
"Yes. It was hard for me to not forget it. Anyway, I thought I bring you to the tow yard and we could work on cars together. You ok with that?"
"Sure, Dad."
"That's what I like to hear."
Larry and Jodie drove back to the yard so that they could work on cars together. He thought it be nice to teach Jodie about working on cars before she took a class to drive. He hoped she could maintain her car properly when she had one in the future.

Notes:
Sorry for the late update. I have been experiencing some scheduling issues and I am running out of ideas for Wattpad. If anyone has any ideas for this next chapter while the Phillips Family is in New York City, please comment with your ideas and I'd be happy to consider it. Other than that, I will be posting updates but they will be severely delayed. - Speedbird1987
Chapter Text
Out near Hounslow,
Ellie was with Melanie as she had a visit with Dr. Williams. Melanie held her daughter's hand as sometimes she can get nervous when she has to see the doctor. Ellie always knows it's important to see her to check how well she is doing to keep healthy. Dr. Williams was very careful examining Ellie. She was trained very well by the Health Service and was able to explain to Ellie what she was doing. Melanie was proud of her daughter. She smiled and Ellie smiled back. "Ok, Ellie. I'm all done. But... I have one question to ask. Have you had a flu shot yet?" Dr. Williams asked.
Ellie shook her head. She was a little nervous when Dr. Williams asked the question but she was calm with Melanie by her side and Dr. Williams could see it. "Ellie... It's ok. Mummy's here." Melanie told her.
"I know, mummy... I'm ok."
"I know. I know. It's just that sometimes when you hear that, you get nervous. Ok? Hmm..."
"Tell you what, Melanie. Why don't you and Ellie come with me and I can get a flu shot ready? Alright? Ellie can walk with me. Is that ok?"
"Yeah. Sure."
Dr. Williams escorted Ellie and Melanie to another room where she normally administers flu shots. Ellie felt nervous but walked in. She sat on an open chair and Dr. Williams administered the flu shot. Both adults in the room kept her calm and it was soon done. "There we are, Ellie. All done." Dr. Williams said.
"Was that all?"
"Yeah. It is. I think you will be alright."
"That's good. Right?"
"Yes, Ellie. It's great!"
Melanie helped Ellie down and Ellie sat right beside her mum while Dr. Williams printed out some papers for them. Melanie and Dr. Williams had a chat for a while before Ellie and Melanie headed home after they thanked Dr. Williams.
At the house,
Dinner time had now arrived and everyone was home. Jack was still not in a good mood with his family, Jodie was feeling bad for her mistakes at School, and Larry was busy setting the table with Ellie who was still having a good day before Melanie finished cooking. Dinner was ready and everyone sat down at the dinner table together. Melanie looked at her family before Larry broke the silence in the room. "Mm... Mel... This is nothing but a wonderful supper you made. Spaghetti has done it again. Wonderful." Larry told her.
"Thanks, Love. I'm glad you and Ellie were able to set the dinner table."
"Well, we were just helping you out, Mel."
Ellie smiled and high-fived her dad as they had done a wonderful job setting the Dinner Table before Jodie looked at them. Jack was still feeling the emotions running through him. He knew he was in trouble for his mess this morning and arguing with Melanie but decided to keep it to himself. "Erm... Mum... I know Dad told you about this but I thought you would hear it from me." Jodie warned.
"Of course, Jodie. Did something happen at School?"
"Yeah. Jasmine and I got into a fight during Lunch. We both got suspended from School."
"What?"
"Yeah. We got suspended for the fight."
"How long are you suspended?"
"That's the situation, Mum. Mr. Kingston said Jasmine was suspended for 2 weeks and ordered to join a non-bullying program. I'm only suspended for 5 days."
"Oh... Well... 5 Days won't be that bad. Besides, we need to do something about Jack's Education next year. It's hard for us to drive to Rochdale and London. I have to work at the Airport."
"Really?" Larry asked.
"Yeah. Speaking of the Airport... I had reached out to British Airways Reservations and booked us 5 tickets Round-Trip to New York City."
"Nice one, Mum." Jodie remarked.
"Always loved the Big Apple." Jack added.
"Mum always has something planned for the summer holiday."
"Yeah. And we are leaving on the 11th of May in the year 1998 on the Legendary Aircraft known as... Concorde."
"What's a Concorde, Mummy?" Ellie asked.
"It's a high-speed airplane that can get us to a destination at the speed of sound. We can get across the Atlantic Ocean to New York in 3 and a half hours, less than half the regular flying time for other airplanes."
"So... It's kind of like a Rocket?"
"Kind of... But yes."
"Cool."
"Now for the flight back here to London, I had reached out to British Airways as I am a Dispatcher at London Heathrow and they tell me that we will be on a Boeing 747-400 back here from New York City. We leave New York at 19:00 hours and arrive back here at 07:00 Hours in the Morning. I would highly recommend we all spend time together whilst in New York. Name a few sights we can see together."
"Times Square." Jodie answered.
"Lady Liberty (The Statue of Liberty)." Jack added.
"Manhattan." Larry pointed out.
"Central Park." Ellie chimed.
"Well, I say we have plenty of things to do whilst in New York City. Jack, I like your suggestion about visiting Lady Liberty. Plus, we can even visit LaGuardia Airport and see some planes over there. You know how much your sister loves planes."
"Ellie or Jodie?"
"Oh, Jack... It's Ellie who loves planes."
"And I also love seeing the firefighters rescuing people from danger, Mummy." Ellie added.
"Really, love?"
"Yeah. Do you remember the time when Mummy got her hand stuck to the car during the winter when it snowed and the Fire Brigade had to be called here? Mummy was not forgetting her Mittens after that."
"Of course we do, Ellie. We were all there and you got to see the Fire Engine with your sister. Your brother was there with you and he appreciates all that the Firefighters of the London Fire Brigade do to help us when we need them." Larry answered.
"Your dad is right. But, I agree with you, Ellie. I won't forget anything that I need after that." Melanie replied.
"Yeah. I agree. Especially if I got in trouble at school. Right?" Jodie asked.
"I agree, Jodie." Melanie replied.
"So, uh... Mel... Did Dr. Williams tell you about how Ellie's been doing in terms of her medical care?" Larry asked.
"Oh, uh... She did have to make sure Ellie had her flu shot which was no problem at all. We do know that Ellie is doing very well in terms of her health if she wants to have a career with the Police, Airport, or Fire Services... But other than that, everything is the same."
"Ok. I meant to ask because I looked at Jodie's paperwork and we haven't registered Jodie with a GP due to our eldest daughter's age."
"I'll call someone in the morning and we'll see if we can find her one. It'll take a while though."
"Good idea. I knew we forgot to do that... I've called Child Services to let them know about our situation. They said they will help us out but they also said it's best if we get Jodie registered with a GP before we leave for New York."
"Right... Larry, I can handle anything with Her Majesty's Government while you take care of our bills, hardware, and maintenance."
"Alright, love... I hope this works."
Melanie decided to put it all aside and pick up the phone that was sitting in the kitchen. She dialed the number for the National Health Service. She waited and then chose her options before she got someone on the line to take her call. "Yeah, I'd like to register one of my daughters with a GP." Melanie told them.
"Ok. I can help with that. Do you have a file for her?"
"I do. Yes."
"I can check the database by surname. What's the surname I'm looking for?"
"Uh, Phillips."
"Ok... Let's see... I have uh... Lawrence, Jackson, Melanie, Eleanor, and uh... Jodie. Who am I Speaking with?"
"This is Melanie Phillips."
"Ok. Which one of the two are you registering with a GP?"
"That would be for Jodie Phillips."
"What's her Date of Birth?"
"8th of July 1985."
"And she's still at the same address. Correct?"
"Yes."
"Ok... I have her all set. Would you be willing to have this done immediately?"
"Uh... Uh... Sure..."
"Great. I'll let them know."
"Oh, ok... Yeah. I'll bring her with me while my husband stays home with the others."
"Ok."
"And who are we gonna see?"
"You'll be meeting with Dr. Renee Lewis."
"Ok... I'll be there."
"No problem. Anything else?"
"No. That'll be it. Thank you so much. I'm sorry if I forgot to get her registered with a GP... We've been forgetting about it until now thanks to a few of my colleagues at the Airport."
"Oh... Are you heading out of the UK any time soon?"
"Yeah... May 11th next year. We're flying to New York."
"Then I think we should get everything done."
"Agreed."
"Other than that, we'll see you soon."
"Thanks. We'll be there."
Melanie hung up after she got Jodie set up for a visit to the hospital. Larry came by with the dishes. Jack didn't seem that hungry but managed to finish. Ellie's plate was cleared up and Jodie's plate was cleared too. "Something wrong, Mel?" He asked.
"No. But I'd like to call a meeting."
"Good idea."
"FAMILY MEETING!!" Melanie called to her children.
Ellie heard and came down the stairs with her sister. Jack was out in the garage before he walked into the house and sat down on the sofa on his own. Jodie sat with Ellie and Melanie sat next to her husband. "Right. I know we're all excited about flying to New York, but a lot of things had to get done. We all need to make sure you complete any schoolwork and homework you have. Jack... I know you may not like it but it has to be done. Alright? I'm transferring you to Jodie's school Next Year."
"Sweet." Jack replied before Jodie smiled.
"Dad... You'll be paying off the bills and our hotel in New York."
"Right, love. I'm always ready." Larry told her.
"Ellie... You can help me by doing the dishes with Daddy. Okay?"
"Ok, Mummy." Ellie replied.
"What about us, mum?" Jodie asked.
"Jodie... I called the NHS and I needed to find a doctor for you. Thankfully, they had one available and we can get it done tonight."
"Wait... Does this mean?"
"Yes, you and I have to go to the hospital. Ok? It's just for a regular Yearly visit. I've been forgetting about you and your education... I'm sorry, love... Your dad and I will make sure we keep up before we fly to New York. Alright?"
"Ok."
"So... We're getting it done now?"
"Yes... And Jack, I'm having you help Dad and Ellie with the dishes. Ok?"
"Alright, Mum..." Jack replied.
"Alright... Good luck, everyone. Action Stations in 3... 2... 1... Now!!" Larry added.
Everyone went to work as Ellie and Jack went to the kitchen while Melanie grabbed her car keys and Jodie followed her. Larry went to help the other two in the kitchen after he saw the car leave for the Hospital. He noticed Ellie and Jack were already getting started. "Look at that. It's looking nice. How many more until the dishwasher is full?" He asked.
"Dad. We just got started."
"Jack... I know. I'll give you a hand. I'll load the dishwasher, Ellie will hand off the dirty dishes to you and then you can hand it off to me."
"Why not just do it the old-fashioned way? Soak it in soapy water and then clean it before drying it with a towel and then put it in the cupboard."
"Not a bad idea, Jack. I noticed you filled the sink. Change of plans. Ellie will hand you the dirty dishes, you can wash and dry them before handing them off to me and I put them back in the cupboard."
"Not a bad idea."
"Why did you not feel like having dinner, son? You ok?"
"Maybe Jack had something to eat and it wasn't something he liked for lunch at school." Ellie added.
"Not really, Ellie. It's something else." Jack replied.
"What do you mean, Jack?" Larry asked.
"I got punched in school... Trust me, Dad... We were having our usual break at school and... This kid was talking rudely to me... No, I didn't fight back."
"What's his name, Jack?"
"Lewis Seddon."
"You're kidding..."
"Nope... I'm not."
"Jack... That boy has done a lot at that school... I told his dad about what he did to my car. He wasn't happy with me. Had Kenny fix that dent on the car."
"For free?"
"Yeah. Because I work with him."
"Alright."
Jack, Ellie, and Larry continued to work on cleaning the dirty dishes before time went past and it was night out before they finished. Ellie was on the sofa watching TV while Jack was doing his homework and Larry was on the computer working on the house bill and any payments he may have forgotten about. He then saw headlights pull up and saw his wife and eldest daughter arrive back. They were back after a trip to the Hospital. Jodie went up to her bedroom while Melanie was setting her keys down and went to find Larry. "Hey, love. I'm home." Melanie called.
"Welcome home. How was it?"
"Well... Jodie is in remarkable shape. Dr. Lewis tells me that Jodie has been... Well... She's been through what many women go through at her age."
"Ah. Right... Anything else?"
"Other than that, Dr. Lewis scheduled Jodie for Next Year a week before we leave for America."
"Ok..."
"I can see you, Jack, and Ellie did a great job cleaning the kitchen and the dining room."
"True."
"We'll be ready for New York in no time."
"Of course we will."
"What's the status of the hotel?"
"I got us a perfect Hotel in New York. We're at the Plaza Hotel. Family-friendly, plenty of rooms with a view of Central Park, and access to Times Square through Central Park."
"A room for 5?"
"Yep. One room for 5. We can have Jack in one bed, you and I share one whilst Ellie and Jodie share one."
"Jodie has been helping me with her sister when Ellie was first born."
"Maybe Jodie can help us when we go to New York City."
"Perfect. I'll be downstairs if you need me. I gotta get ready for another day at Heathrow."
"Ok."
Melanie went downstairs to get ready for work. She had been thinking about the trip to New York but was also worried about what could happen to her family while in America. The USA was a lot different than the UK. She looked at Ellie and Jack before she went back to the kitchen. Larry was finished with the payment for the hotel while Jodie was doing her homework in her room. What was this family going to do next year?
Chapter 3: Trip to New York
Summary:
Ellie and her family fly out to New York City on Holiday. This is Ellie's first trip on the British Airways Concorde to New York. Ellie, Jodie, and Jack meet an officer from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and 4 firefighters from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
Chapter Text
The sun rose on the day they were heading to the USA. Ellie had been thinking about her first flight to New York after she flew to the USA for the first time years ago after she was born. Melanie and Larry were still asleep until Larry woke up and he gave Melanie a small kiss. "Good morning, My love..." He said
"Morning, Larry..."
"We're off to New York."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I better see if the kids are ready."
"Ok... I'll get ready."
Larry went to check on Ellie, Jodie, and Jack while Melanie was getting ready for the flight. All the bags were packed and the passports were stored safely. This was their first trip to New York since Melanie and Larry spent their honeymoon in New York City. Ellie was already finished bringing out their bags and Jodie was helping her. He was surprised at the scene. "Erm... Jodie. You helping Ellie with the bags?" He asked.
"Yeah. I helped her with the suitcase and I made sure she packed a carry-on with a personal bag."
"Excellent. Where's Jack?"
"He's still late packing his bags."
"That boy... He should've packed last night or in advance... I'll deal with this later. Alright?"
"Ok, Dad."
"Mum's still getting ready. I'd suggest you help me out by loading the car with the bags. Since you and Ellie share one suitcase."
"Sure."
"I'll rearrange it for easier access, you can bring them to me. Mind you, the bag Mum and I have is quite heavy."
"Don't worry, Dad. I can handle that."
"Ok, Jodie."
Ellie, Jodie, and Larry worked together loading up the car with their luggage while Melanie left a note for the Royal Mail and anyone that delivers to their house that they were out of town and would return soon. Jack was the last one out with his bags and he passed them to Larry who loaded them up before everyone got in the car. "Ok. House is locked, I left a note for Delivery Services and the Police have been informed. Are we all set?" Melanie asked.
"Let's see... We have Ellie, Jodie, Jack, everyone's luggage, Myself, You, Passports, Additional Documents, Marriage Certificates from the UK and the Offices in London, and birth certificates for all three children. I'd say we're ready."
"Let's go!"
Larry started the car and they were soon on their way to London Heathrow Airport. Ellie was excited about travelling but was also nervous because it was her first time travelling to New York. They drove down the Motorway to the other side of Heathrow and later parked at the nearest car park outside of Terminal 4. Once they parked, Melanie helped her husband with the luggage and Larry brought over a Luggage cart. It was a busy day at the terminal. Jack was listening to his music on his personal CD Player. He was listening to One Step Beyond by Madness. They were soon at the check-in counters for Concorde. The sign above them said "Concorde check in" with the British Airways Logo. "Hi. How can I help you?" An employee asked.
"We're checking in for the Flight to New York. I believe the flight was Speedbird 1." Melanie replied.
"Ok. Was this booked online or through the phone?"
"It was done here and on the phone. I'm an off-duty Dispatcher. I erm... Happened to call British Airways and make this possible."
"Ah. Ok. How many passengers?"
"5. My husband, my son, myself, and my two daughters."
"Oh. Alright. Do you have a Passport for everyone?"
"I do."
Melanie pulled the passports out of her carry-on and managed to hand them to the ticket agent who checked their names in the system for British Airways and it showed that the travel plans were made in advance. He handed them back to Melanie and looked at the seats on the computer. "Ok. Let's see. Which one did you select for your son?" He asked.
"17B."
"Ok. And who's in 16C?"
"That'll be my husband."
"And you're in which seat?"
"16D."
"And your two daughters are in 16A and 16B. Right?"
"Yes."
"How many checked bags?"
"3."
Larry lifted all 3 suitcases one by one and set them down one at a time on the belt before they were given bag tags with their Destination. they were soon checked in. "Here are your boarding passes with a ticket holder. I'm sure you'll pick one up in New York for your return flight. Erm... Is this your first time on Concorde?" The agent asked.
"Not me and my husband. We spent our Honeymoon in 1978 when we first took Concorde to New York after the BOAC (British Overseas Air Corporation) and BEA (British European Airways) Merger which formed British Airways."
"I see. Well... I have the boarding passes here and I am sure you and your kids will love this aircraft. It will get you to New York faster than any airplane in the world."
"So, I see. Erm... The seats are confirmed. Right?" Larry asked.
"Yes, sir. I have Rows 16 A, B, C, and D in addition to Seat 17B. You're all set. Your flight will be at Gate 20."
"Ok. Thank you, sir."
"Enjoy your flight."
Melanie was handed the boarding passes before they left the ticket counter for Security. Security measures were different in the 1990s before the events in 2001. Their Boarding Pass for Concorde flights and Ticket holder looked like this.
Melanie kept them safe in the wallet provided to her. They all made it safely past Airport Security after checking their bags at the security checkpoints. They were soon airside and Melanie escorted them to the gate while Jodie and Ellie were ahead as Jodie was familiar with Terminal 4. Ellie was excited when she was travelling to America for the first time since 1992. As they arrived at the gate, Melanie took a photo of Ellie and Jodie who were very excited to travel to America. Jack was even in the photo as he had always dreamed of moving to America in the future. Larry watched as other passengers arrived at the gate. They all sat near the window enjoying a nice view of the Tarmac. "We'll be in New York soon, Love." Melanie remarked.
"Can't wait to see what life is like in America. I mean, it has changed for quite some time with Broadway."
"Yeah. Especially the United Nations, Empire State Building, and Lady Liberty."
"Yes."
"I wonder what Central Park is like?"
"Probably still there."
"Let's find out when we land. We get there at like approximately 9:30 in the Morning."
"So, we got plenty of time to find a cab and head for the Hotel."
"Right..."
Just as Melanie and Larry were waiting until their flight was boarding, Ellie and Jodie were watching from the window as they saw more flights coming in and going out. Jack was sitting nearby with his personal CD Player. There were a lot of British Airways flights coming into London. They were soon ready to begin the flight boarding process. After they boarded the plane, Ellie and Jodie managed to take their seats with Ellie looking out the window. "Mummy. Look. I can see the wing." Ellie told Melanie.
"Yeah. You got a great view of the wing. And you're going to love this when we take off."
"Really?"
"Of course. The Captain will tell us about how fast we take off in this plane."
"Cool."
The family was soon on their way to New York City. As the plane pushed back onto the taxiway, the engines were starting. The engines on the Concorde were loud enough to hear on the ground. After a short taxi to the runway, the nose was lowered and the engines were starting to power up. Ellie watched as the captain explained to all the passengers about the high-powered takeoff. Soon, they were in the air and flying to America.
After about 3 hours in the air,
The plane began to make its way down to the ground for JFK Airport. Ellie was amazed at the view of the clouds below. Jodie was impressed as well. She can see her sister smiling with pride and joy as the Concorde begins to land at the airport. Outside the window, Ellie looked and she could see New York. "Jodie, Look! It's New York!" Ellie excitedly told her sister.
"You're right, Ellie. Look. There's Staten Island. Oh, look. I can see Lady Liberty. There's the Empire State Building."
"Your sister loves New York, Jodie. I'm sure you'll love it."
"Ellie's only heard of stories when you were in New York. she hasn't been there before."
"Right."
The plane soon landed in New York and taxied to the gate. Ellie watched all the planes take off and land as they taxied down the tarmac. They soon arrived at the terminal and made their way to U.S. Immigration and Customs. Melanie has all passports and the Customs Form as well as additional forms. They arrived in the customs hall and were called upon by a customs officer. "Hi, guys. How you doing?" The officer asked.
"We're doing great."
"I'm happy to hear that. So... What brings you to the United States?"
"We're here on Holiday."
"Where are you coming from?"
"London."
"Do you have anything that cannot be permitted into the United States?"
"No, sir."
"How much cash do you have?"
"Approximately $40."
"OK. Do you have a connection?"
"No."
"Alright."
The customs officer stamped all passports and forms before Melanie was given them back. She was then given directions on where to go. The family collected their bags and made their way to arrivals. They went to find the taxi station. After a short drive from JFK Airport to the City, they arrived at their hotel and Ellie watched as a fire truck and Police car drove by. She was amazed by the city before they all went to check in. It didn't take long for them to check in and they were soon up in their room. After a while, Ellie and Jodie went to explore the city. As long as Jack was with them, Melanie and Larry were watching them from the room.
Out in the City,
Ellie, Jodie, and Jack were out on the Streets of New York City. They were always happy to enjoy a family holiday together. Jodie was amazed at the Taxis and Ellie watched as they made their way to Central Park. They saw Central Park as one of the most famous places to be in the United States. As they looked around Central Park at the Bridge together, a Police Officer came by and he happened to notice them. "Hey, guys. You ok?" She asked.
"Oh... Geez... Yes. We're fine, Officer."
"Ok. Uh... Where are your parents?"
"At the Hotel. They know where we are. We told them." Jack responded.
"I see. Where you guys from?"
"We're from London, officer."
"Ain't that home to like uh... What was it? Big Ben?"
"Yes! You got it! Like New York is home to the Empire State Building and Lady Liberty."
"That's right."
"What's that shield on your sleeve?" Ellie asked.
"Oh. This? I'm a Police Officer. You see this? It says "Police Department" on the top, And then right here... It reads "City of New York". This lets people know that I am with the New York City Police or as we call ourselves... The NYPD."
"I'm sorry, Officer... My young sister has never been to New York City before. It's her first time." Jodie apologized.
"Oh... I see. What's her name?"
"This is Eleanor. Everyone we know calls her Ellie. I'm Jodie. This is my older brother Jack."
"Right."
"Hey, Ellie. I got a question for you."
"You do?"
"Yeah. What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"I want to be a Firefighter when I grow up."
"That's a great choice, Ellie. I mean... It's a little different than being a Police Officer. But you still get to save the day. Right?"
"Right."
"Hey... Have you been inside a Police Car?"
"No. Why?"
"Well... I'd like to show you what I do every day as a Police officer."
"Ok."
"I'm Erin by the way... Officer Erin Lee. NYPD."
The three siblings followed Officer Lee to her marked Police car painted with the NYPD colors. They were amazed with the car as Ellie was seeing this for the first time in New York City. "Welcome to my Police Car. When I come to work every day, I always have a Police car. This car is used by Police Officers in the NYPD. We use this to bring ourselves to an emergency using our lights and Sirens. This lets people and other drivers know that they need to let us through. This car is also used to give the bad guys a ride to jail." She said giving them a tour of her police car.
"Is that a Radio?"
"Yes, Ellie. This radio here lets me talk to our officers in the control room and other officers on patrol. The only problem is... We have no way of talking to the Firefighters."
"Is that done another way?"
"Yes. We talk to each other through our control room to theirs or we talk to the firefighters as they arrive at any emergency. Ah... Here they come. Engine 5-8 is here. They just got done with an Emergency."
"Officer Lee."
"Lieutenant Jenkins. Good to see you."
"Happy to see you too. I see you're giving these three an inside look at your cruiser."
"Yeah. They flew in from London. This is Jodie, Ellie, and Jack."
"Hi, guys. My name's Dave. I'm a Firefighter. Officer Lee and I have worked together since she first got the job with the NYPD."
"That's a big Fire Engine." Ellie pointed out comparing the Fire Trucks in the US to the Fire Engines in the UK.
"Yeah. It is. This Fire Truck is our way of getting to an emergency. We are the people you see when there is a fire or when you are hurt. We have a lot of tools in our engine. We carry Fire Hoses, Fire Extinguishers, Bandages, Medicine... Name it."
"Officer Lee... What's that on your belt?" Ellie asked the officer.
"Oh. This? This is my gun. We don't know when we have to use it but it's important for a Police Officer to have one in case we are going to a bank robbery." She replied.
"How Dangerous is it?"
"This gun is very dangerous. You see... It's always a good idea to tell a grown-up if you see a gun. If you see a gun, here's what you do. Even in England, you do this... Stop, don't touch it... Leave it alone and tell a grown-up. That way they can safely put it away. Alright?"
"Dave... How many emergencies have you gone to?" Ellie asked the Firefighter.
"Oh... I've been to many emergencies, Ellie. I have been busy with my friends here. These are my friends. Victoria, Bill, and Mary."
"Hi."
"Guys... This is Jodie, Jack, and Ellie. These three flew in from the United Kingdom on vacation... Or as they like to call it... On Holiday."
"Welcome to New York." Greeted Victoria.
"Great to have you here." Added Bill
"We're very proud to have you here today." Mary replied.
"That's so nice of you." Jodie replied to them.
"Hey, Ellie. I have a question. What do you want to be when you grow up?" Dave asked.
"I uh... I want to be a Firefighter when I grow up."
"That is a really great Choice. I'm sure you will be able to keep London safe from danger. Wanna see the Fire Truck?"
"Yeah!"
"Alright! Come on. Oh... Your sister and Brother can join too."
"Jack. Did you bring the camera?"
"I did, Jodie. Right here."
"Awesome. Mum is gonna love this."
Everyone went over to the red fire truck that sat in front of the Police car. It had the official FDNY logo and the number 58 on the side. The truck was a lot bigger compared to the Fire Engines in the United Kingdom. "Welcome to Engine 5-8. We are out in the area known as Harlem. This Fire Truck is our way of going to an Emergency when you or someone else needs our help." Chimed Dave happily.
"So... What's this big bottle sitting in the seat?"
"This... Is our way of keeping ourselves safe in a building that has smoke. It does feel scary at first but you will see that there is a friendly face under that mask. These special jackets, gloves, boots, pants, and helmets keep us safe too. The helmet is very different from the ones in London. Wanna try it on?"
"Yes, please."
"Alright! Here we go."
Lieutenant Jenkins placed his helmet on Ellie's head and they knew it was a bit big. Ellie managed to fit in the turnout gear no matter how it happened. The Lieutenant saw how big it was and they both laughed. Ellie was very happy. "Haha!! That seems a little big. I'm sure we can fix that... There we go. Much better." He remarked adjusting the helmet.
As the Firefighters helped Ellie try on their turnout gear, Jodie watched in awe as her sister was getting a special tour of the Fire Truck. Even Jack was seeing this, so he decided to get this on video for their parents. "Man... Look at that. Fine work by the Police and Fire Services in New York." He said on camera.
As he filmed the special tour, Ellie was seen by her siblings in full FDNY turnout gear. The Firefighters gathered alongside and took a knee with Officer Lee. Jodie watched and took the photo before she decided that both she and Jack should join in too. "Excuse me, sir... Can you help me take this photo?" Jodie asked.
"Yeah. Of course."
Jodie and Jack joined the Firefighters, Officer Lee, and Ellie in the photo before the photo was taken and Jodie was handed the camera back before she saw them and it was perfect. "Wow... That was perfect... Mum is gonna love this." She told Jack.
"Yeah, she is."
As Jodie and Jack gathered their belongings, Ellie passed the Firefighters their gear back and a call was heard. Ellie was handed some coloring books and Fire Safety activities from them before they turned their lights on. "Well... Duty calls. It was nice meeting you three. Safe travels. Enjoy your stay in New York City." Dave remarked.
"Thanks... One last question... What's that shield on the Fire Engine?" Ellie asked
"Oh. This? It's our way of letting people like you know that this truck is part of the Fire Department. See this... It reads "Fire Department... City of New York". We call ourselves the "Fire Department of New York" or "FDNY" for Short. Anyway... We gotta go. Have fun, you guys!"
"See ya!!!" The three siblings replied
"I gotta go too. Emergency. My work never stops. Have fun. Stay safe. And... Enjoy your day here in New York City. See you later!" Officer Lee said as she got in her Police car and drove off using her lights and Sirens behind the Firefighters who also had their lights and Sirens on.
"Bye!!"
Jodie, Ellie, and Jack made their way back to the Hotel. Thankfully, it wasn't that far. As they came into the room, they saw their parents were thinking about where to start in New York City. The two parents then saw their children and looked at them. "Hello, you lot. How was Central Park?" Melanie asked.
"It was great, Mum. We got to see some amazing things in the park. Plus, we had a great time with a Police Officer and some Firefighters. They offered." Jodie told her mother.
"Ah. That explains why Ellie has papers from the Police and Fire Services. What's that all for?"
"Oh, it's a bunch of safety tips from them. There are some great activities in there for her."
"Did you get a photo?" Larry asked.
"We did... Take a look."
Ellie handed her dad the photo and it had her in firefighting turnout gear from the FDNY and her brother and sister with Officer Lee and the crew of Engine 58 for the Fire Department. He was impressed. "Oh wow... That... Looks beautiful... We're printing this and putting it in a safe place for Ellie." He said.
"Really?"
"Yes. We'll put it up in your room when we're home in London."
"I'm sure the Police back home in London will see that."
"Yeah. Especially the Fire Brigade."
Ellie told her mum about her walk with her big sister and big brother. Melanie was happy to hear that Ellie was enjoying her holiday in the United States. Things were looking great for them as they had a week to see the sights of the city that never sleeps.
