Work Text:
Rexy’s thundering footsteps echoed through the halls as he chased his car-driven bone. Larry snickered quietly as he watched Rexy’s tail wag excitedly. If he had time, he planned on playing a little game of tug of war with the big goofball dinosaur. He just needed to get through his rounds and let everyone out.
He reached the hall of miniatures and stopped for a moment to watch everyone climb down from their exhibits.
“Larry! Larry!”
He glanced down to see Octavius and Jedediah hurrying towards him. Or at least, Octavius was hurrying. He had his arm around Jedediah’s shoulders and was helping the cowboy waddle slightly quickly. Larry knelt down as they reached him.
“Hey guys, what’s the matter?”
Octavius opened his mouth to speak, but Jedediah groaned and doubled over, clutching at his round belly. Octavius crooned something that Larry couldn’t hear, rubbing Jedediah’s back.
“It is time.” Octavius said gravely. He hefted the full sack he was carrying further up on his shoulder.
“Time? Oh! You mean the baby’s coming?”
“What’s it look like, Gigantor?” Jedediah hissed.
“Indeed. We were hoping that you would allow us to go somewhere a little more quiet and private?” Octavius said.
“Oh yeah, course. You guys can hang out in the security office for a few days if you want. You want a lift?”
“I don’t like to be manhandled. You know that.” Jedediah grumbled.
Octavius sighed. “Jedediah, you cannot walk all that way in your present condition.”
He rubbed his palm along Jedediah's swollen belly. Jedediah wilted.
“Alright, partner. Just this once.”
Larry held his hand out and Octavius helped Jedediah climb on. He sat down in Larry’s palm with a heavy groan. Octavius sat beside him and Jedediah leaned his head against the Roman’s shoulder. As carefully as he could, Larry stood up and started the walk down to his office. Jedediah groaned, fanning himself with his hat.
“Oh boy. This sure ain’t fun.”
Octavius kissed his hair. “I know. I’m sorry.”
“Just hang on. We’re nearly there.” Larry said.
Jedediah just groaned, clutching Octavius for dear life.
Larry opened the door to the security office and set Jedediah and Octavius down on the table. Jedediah sank down onto his knees.
“Do you have something soft we can use?” Octavius asked, “We have blankets but I want him to be comfortable.”
“Uh yeah, that’s fine.” Larry rummaged around in his locker and pulled out a soft winter hat. He laid it out on the table and Octavius helped Jedediah get situated on it.
“Oh boy. Fellas, this kid is coming out.” He moaned.
Larry’s eyes widened. “You need to push? Like, now?”
Jedediah shook his head. “Not yet. But it’s not gonna be long.”
“Wow, you guys work fast.”
“Been having pains all day. We was hiding out of sight in the cabin, but I feel like I’m about ta explode now.”
Octavius took his hand and kissed his knuckles lovingly. “You’re going to be absolutely fine, my love.”
“Mighty fine words for someone who don’t feel packed fulla dynamite.” Jedediah retorted. But he leaned into Octavius’s hold, soaking in his touch.
“You want some privacy? I can leave you alone in here if you want.” Larry said.
Octavius and Jedediah exchanged looks. Slowly in unison they shook their heads.
“You have been with us for many great battles,” Octavius said thoughtfully, “We would both like you to be here for this one.”
“Yeah, alright. I can do that.”
“Thanks, pal.” Jedediah mumbled. He leaned back against Octavius’s chest, cradling his belly. He moaned, low and quiet as the pain started to build. The sound became a yell. His hand clenched down on Octavius’s hand.
“Octy. It’s bad. ‘s like it’s right between my hips.”
“Just breathe, Jedediah. Just breath and you will get through this.”
“Yeah, Jed. You’re tough.” Larry said.
Jedediah cast him a weary but grateful smile. “Thanks, Gigantor.”
“So, you got any names picked out a name yet?” Larry asked.
Octavius smiled. “We do. But you will have to wait until the baby is born.”
“Speaking of the baby,” Jedediah gasped, “Octavius, get my pants off.”
Larry choked in shock, but Octavius sprang into action. He laid Jedediah back against the hat and pulled a blanket from his bag. He draped it over Jedediah’s legs and worked his boots and then his trousers off. Jedediah groaned loudly. Cautiously Larry reached out with a finger. Jedediah grabbed it desperately, levering himself into a sitting position again. He spread his knees wide and yelled.
“That’s it. Good, strong pushes, Jedediah.” Octavius grinned.
“Hold my hand.” Jedediah moaned. “Please. I need yah.”
Octavius took his free hand with a teary smile. “Always, my love.”
Squeezing Larry’s finger a little and crushing Octavius’s hand, Jedediah yelled.
Octavius gasped. “I see the head!”
“I know!” Jedediah growled. But he yelled again, curling in on himself.
“One more!”
Jedediah screamed.
“Oh, hello little one.” Octavius whispered. He lifted a tiny squirming little baby and cradled it close.
“What we get?” Jedediah croaked.
“See for yourself.” Octavius grinned as he passed the baby into Jedediah’s arms.
“Hey there son. Been waiting for you a long while. Worth the wait.”
“Wow. He’s super cute.” Larry laughed, swiping at his teary eyes.
Jedediah could only nod as he stared into tiny blue eyes and dark fuzzy hair.
A knock sounded against the door.
“I’ll get it.” Larry said.
He opened it just enough to look out without exposing Jedediah and Octavius. In front of him was Sacajawea. Behind her was Teddy, Ahkmenrah, Atilla and Dex.
“We heard about the baby. Is everything alright?” Sacajawea asked.
“Yeah, he’s here. It’s all good.”
“Jus let em in!” Jedediah yelled from inside.
Larry looked back at them. Jedediah had the baby swaddled in a blanket cradled against his chest. He was leaning heavily into Octavius’s embrace. Exhausted clearly, but glowing with joy.
“You sure?”
“Yes.” Octavius said.
“Alright, in you come.” Larry said, opening the door.
Everyone filed in and crouched down to look admiringly over the baby.
“Congratulations, gentlemen.” Teddy said.
“He’s beautiful.” Sacajawea cooed.
"He's so tiny." Ahkmenrah muttered, looking completely awestruck.
Atilla said something soft in Hun and nodded.
Jedediah and Octavius smiled back proudly.
“We are honoured to introduce you to Darius.” Octavius said.
“Welcome to the family Darius.” Larry smiled.
“It’s a darn good one to be part of.” Jedediah murmured and kissed his son’s forehead before sharing a kiss with Octavius.
