Wilted Mittensettias

Summary:

Oh. Poppy was the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen. She changed his entire life completely. Poppy expertly broke down his walls and crawled in his heart. So why couldn’t he confess? His skin would prick all over, his vocal cords not cooperating. Branch just wished he could’ve said something before it all went downhill.

(Tags will update as the story progresses)

(P.S. Story is on hiatus!)

Notes:

I just really love stories that have hanahaki (I have not read a Star Tear story yet, I'm going to find one though. I might even write one I don't know). So I thought why not write a story with a hyper fixation of mine. Plus, there wasn't many hanahaki stories last I checked.
Anyway, have fun reading this. It probably sucks.

Chapter Text

Branch knew he liked Poppy. He knew that it was better to confess than to not say anything. But he was so scared. So instead of telling her, he just chickened out and held up his hand for a high five. Poppy smiled brightly, looking as beautiful as ever. He couldn’t help it if he smiled too.

So that’s why he was kind of just standing around. His tail was slowly wrapping around his leg. Pop village had been working to rebuild. Barb had felt bad and sent some rock trolls over to help rebuild as well. These trolls were a lot stronger, having way more body strength than a normal pop troll.

After most of Pop Village was rebuilt, Branch suggested that some Pop trolls help the other villages rebuild. Poppy thought it was a good idea, and asked if any other villages needed help rebuilding. She sent messages to Symphonyville first, she had seen the destruction first hand.

Trollzart had thought it was an excellent idea, and greatly accepted the help. Poppy brought lots of Pop trolls along with her. The Rock trolls that were at Pop village even agreed to help, if Trollzart would allow them. Branch was keeping track of safety. He made sure everyone was safe during the rebuilding process of Symphonyville. He was actually surprised about the amount of rebuilding they were able to do in such a short time.

Unfortunately, not everything goes as planned. Branch was overseeing the rebuilding of the metronome in the middle of Symphonyville. The Symphony trolls had to rebuild it themselves because they could fly and reach that high.

Though, many trolls were handing them materials with their hair to try and help out. When suddenly one of the Symphony troll’s hands slipped and dropped the item in their hand. It was falling right where…Poppy was walking. Poppy!

Branch immediately swung his hair towards Poppy and the Symphony troll she was talking to. His hair wrapped around them, and he pulled them towards him.

“Wow! Branch, what was that for?” Poppy asked. The troll she was talking to was Trollzart. He was a little shaken from being pulled so fast. Branch pointed towards where the item had fallen. Exactly where Poppy and Trollzart were walking.

“Someone dropped something on accident. You could’ve gotten hurt,” Branch explained. Trollzart gasped, thanking Branch for saving him. Poppy just stared at where Branch had pointed.

“Thanks Branch! I’ve got to…um, go do something. Check up on the trolls! Bye,” Poppy said, speaking increasingly faster. She ran off. Even though all the trolls were working on the metronome, he was confused on where she was going.

His tail nervously flicked behind him. He decided to give the trolls working a break. He wanted to try and figure out what was wrong with Poppy. She never ran off like that. He would get to the bottom of this.

Branch was resting in one of the makeshift homes in Symphonyville. That’s whenever it happened. He was thinking about how he could confess to Poppy, when his chest started hurting. He quickly sat up, holding his chest. His chest kept on hurting. Branch stood up and hurried over to the fridge. He took a swig of water, hoping that would relieve the pain. It didn’t. The pain persisted, and he kept clutching his chest. Suddenly, Branch started coughing.

Painfully coughing. Branch fell to the floor, trying to actually breathe in between coughs. God, this is painful. He continued coughing, his throat burning.

Suddenly, the coughing stopped. He wrapped his tail around his leg, to try and comfort himself Branch started breathing, trying to regain the breath he lost from the coughing. He was gasping for air, trying to think about what happened. His chest started aching, then he had a random fit of aggressive coughing.

Did he know any illnesses that had those symptoms? Whatever. He’d definitely research it back home at his bunker. For now, he had to finish up with Symphonyville’s reconstruction.

They were almost done anyway, so that was a good thing. Trollzart said that after tomorrow, the Symphony trolls would be able to handle the rest. Right now, Branch needed some rest. He gripped the counter, and hoisted himself up. He was a little shaky, but he took his time. Branch collapsed on the bed, groaning. Branch really wanted to go home. There was nothing wrong with Symphonyville. It’s just he would rather the comfort of his bunker.

Branch closed his eyes and tried to doze off without thinking of anything. Yet, his mind thought of his pink little friend. His heart twinged and squeezed out of sadness. If anything, he just wanted to run up to her and tell her how much he loved her.

Poppy stood outside the Caterbus, waiting for the last of the Pop and Rock trolls to board. She was a bit bored, so she was playing with her tail. Branch was standing, checking everything off on his little checklist. She smiled at him. Poppy turned her head when she heard Trollzart’s wings beating and fluttering. She waved, and Trollzart waved back.

“Hello, Queen Poppy. I’ve just come to say goodbye. Oh, and to thank you and all the trolls that helped us rebuild. We couldn’t have done it without you,” Trollzart stated. She smiled, shaking her head.

“Oh, it was nothing. We just wanted to help!” Poppy exclaimed. She noticed the last troll boarded, and Branch was waiting for her. He was patiently standing with his tail around his leg. Her heart twinged with happiness. Suddenly, Trollzart tapped Poppy on the shoulder. She turned to meet the troll.

“Queen Poppy. Please be careful,” Trollzart asked. Poppy was a bit confused on why he was nervous, but she thought it was sweet.

“The other trolls and I will be super safe. We’ll get home fine, Trollzart,” Poppy reassured him. Trollzart still looked nervous, but he didn’t say anything else. Poppy quickly boarded the Caterbus. Branch followed her quickly after. Poppy took out a notepad and started to write other fantastic ideas that she thought of.

(<3)

Branch lightly tapped Poppy’s shoulder until she woke up.

“Huh? Huh, what happen?” Poppy jolted awake, swinging her head side to side. Branch rolled his eyes and tried to make her stop swinging her head.

“We’re home Poppy. I had to wake you up because you fell asleep,” Branch explained. Poppy’s face grew dark from embarrassment. She nodded, quickly climbing out of the Caterbus. Branch climbed out, gently petting it. It closed its mouth, and started to scatter towards its home. Branch stood there, not feeling like walking all the way to the bunker. Unfortunately, it was getting chilly, so he scurried off.

Once he stepped into the elevator, he immediately warmed up. He was actually really happy to be back in his bunker. Once the elevator reached the bottom of the bunker, he quickly stepped towards his room. Finally, closing his door to his room, he collapsed into his bed. Branch reached for the blankets, burrowing deep into them. Underneath the blankets, his brain started working. He started thinking about all kinds of things. Branch liked it whenever his brain worked, it made him sleepy. He started to doze off, with his tail wrapping around his body.

(<3)

Branch woke up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. His tail grabbed his vest, as he walked out his bedroom. Shrugging his vest on, he walked to the electric box, switching on the lights in his bunker.

He went back down the hallway, to get some supplies for a trap he wanted to set out. He went into one of his many storage rooms, digging out the box full of supplies. Branch was walking to the living room when he passed by a hallway. His ears drooped, he knew what hallway that was.

Ever since he thought of the bunker, he wanted to make it a house for his brothers. So when he made it, he included rooms for them. He tried to decorate them for each sibling, but he couldn’t remember what each of their personalities was. He sighed, setting down the box. Branch reached for the door, when he froze. His tail wrapped around his leg nervously. Branch turned around, grabbed his box, and put it into the living room.

Branch continued walking until he reached the kitchen. He dug through the cupboards until he found some ingredients. Branch started to get to work fixing up some breakfast for himself. Branch kept thinking about what he should do. Maybe he could go into the village. Maybe we could talk to Poppy.

Branch smiled, and let the meal finish cooking. He walked towards the living room when he suddenly had the urge to cough. He hit his chest, which made it worse. His tail wrapped around his leg.

He started having a fit of coughing, similar to what happened in Symphonyville. Branch could feel something at the back of his throat, but he could not tell what it was. All he knew was that he had to get it out.

He fell to the floor, continuing to cough. Branch couldn’t breathe, and started to gag. His hands flew to his mouth, and something flew out his mouth.

Branch took in a huge breath, trying to regain all the air he lost. He took a moment to sit there, trying to control his breathing again. Remembering something flew out of his mouth, he looked down at his hand. His hand unfurled to show…

A Mittensettia petal.

A Mittensettia petal?

What did Branch know about Mittensettia’s? Well, they only start to grow whenever it gets cold, they also grow above ground, Mittensettia’s rarely grow in Pop Village. They were Poppy’s favorite flower. His heart squeezed at that thought.

Branch was a bit confused though. Winter had started, but it wasn’t nearly cold enough for them to start growing. Besides, he lived underground so the flowers couldn’t grow in his bunker. The Mittensettia’s should only grow on the outskirts of town anyway. Far away from where Branch’s bunker was.

Branch was a little nervous. How was it that a Mittensettia flower found its way into his throat? Especially since the flower hasn’t started growing yet.

Branch stood up and started walking to his library. He noticed that the petal was red, almost a burgundy color. Branch decided he would research on why he’s coughing so much, and how he coughed up a single Mittensettia petal.

Notes:

I’m so sorry if the chapter isn’t good. I know what I want to happen, I just don’t know how to pace my stories very well. (Fun Fact: this is the first story I wrote that I actually didn’t end up hating halfway through writing it. I don’t know if it’s because it’s trolls, or I just suck at writing.) Some chapters might have titles (I suck at titles)

Anyway leave a kudos if you liked it - <3

Branch continued walking through the long hallways of his bunker, gently holding the Mittensettia petal. He was still very confused as to why a single petal was in his mouth. Especially a petal of a flower that was out of season. His tail flicked behind him as he tried to explain this in his head. Branch noticed he was at his destination, and he quickly walked inside. It wasn’t until he walked into the library that he realized how small it was. Its selection of books was also very tiny. He had very few books about camping, some books about cooking, the rest were about survival. Branch sighed, rubbing his hand over his face. His tail nervously wrapped around his leg as he was thinking of a solution. How am I supposed to figure out what is happening? His tail tightened around his leg, as he realized.

Branch shoved his hands into his face, groaning. He was going to have to use the very public library in Troll Village. Great. He went to leave when he noticed the petal was not in his hands. There was a slight panic, before he found it on the floor. Branch picked it up and quickly walked to the elevator of the bunker. He started thinking of the books that he would need to find in order to start researching. He definitely needed to find a book on flowers. If there’s a book about just Mittensettias, that would be great. He would need an illness book, to see if he had a cold. His tail slowly unraveled from his leg. He pulled the lever for the elevator down, waiting as it descended.

Once the elevator reached the bottom, he climbed onto the platform. Pushing the lever, the platform started to ascend. It would take a while for the platform to reach the top, so he just stood there. Branch looks down at the single petal in his hand. He starts to fidget with it, lightly flipping it over. Branch smiles, thinking about Poppy. His chest starts hurting at the thought of Poppy, but no coughing fit comes. Branch is grateful for that as he reaches the entrance of the bunker.

Branch climbs out of the elevator, making way for the library. It’s a bit of a walk until he gets to the village, so he tried looking around at his surroundings. He noticed that it was cooler than before. This was a sign that the winter season was most definitely coming. Another sign was that the leaves were already getting their frosty white color. Branch could also see some flower bulbs that had closed due to the cold. Branch continued walking until he got to the edge of town.

He noticed that most of the pods had already been adjusted to the winter weather. The walls of the pods were a lot thicker. On top of the pod, their leaves were pulled down to cover the felt. It kept the pods very warm during the winter months. Branch was surprised some of them have already adjusted their pods. That’s when he spotted the library. His tail started wagging slightly. Branch also noticed that winter adjustments have been added to this pod as well. His tail slowly wrapped around him, trying to comfort himself. Branch sighed, quickly opening the door of the library.

Once he stepped in, he was in shock. He knew libraries were big and had lots of books, but this one was huge. There was the library pod. This mainly consisted of children’s books or school books. Further in, the variety of books increased. It ranged from fictional books, to more informational books. Branch reached the end of the pod. The rest of the library was built into the tree. Branch doesn’t remember this, but they could have just renovated this part of the library. It goes down into the tree. He guesses the further down, the more informational the texts got. He stepped into the elevator and went down.

Branch was surprised about the amount of books he had seen. He was making sure to keep a lookout for the books he needed as he descended on the elevator.

<3

Branch set the books he gathered on the table. He took the book about flowers and immediately flipped to the page about Mittensettias. He was going to find out how a Mittensettia petal got stuck in his throat.

Mittensettia’s are a winter plant. They grow naturally, and need lots of sunlight to grow. Mittensettia’s also need water to grow properly as well. Not enough sunlight or water will cause the flower petals to wilt and die
A mittensettia is actually very rare to come by. They rarely grow in Pop Village, although you might find some on the outskirts of town. Since these flowers need water, most people say they found them near rivers or creeks.
These flowers are loved by many couples in the winter season, and they are usually given as a gift.

That entire page gave Branch nothing. Well, it did confirm what he knew. But it didn’t answer his question on how a petal got into his bunker. He closed the book and pushed it away, before going to the next one. It was the flower language book. He quickly flipped through it, only finding that red was related to love. A lot of colors were related to love. Branch quickly closed and pushed that book away as well, before his head started to hurt. He picked up the last book about illnesses. Branch figured his symptoms were coughing fits and his chest hurting. He tried looking for anything, but nothing matched.

Branch growled in frustration. His tail wrapped around his leg. He put his head down on the table, trying to calm himself down. Why couldn’t he find anything useful? Branch needed to figure out what was wrong with him. He couldn’t keep having these coughing fits out of nowhere. He also needed to figure out where the stupid petal came from. He groaned, gripping his hair lightly. He decided to look again through the book. Branch was going to be here for a while.

<3

Branch was walking out of the library. He had been there all night, unable to find anything. While trying to figure out what was going on, he had another coughing fit. It still feels like something is in the back of his throat. Branch’s tail flicks in frustration, he really thought he was going to find answers in the library.

As he was getting closer to the bunker, he figured he could try to search about his illness on the internet. His tail stopped flicking so angrily. That’s actually a really good idea. Somehow the internet has always had answers when he needed them. He reached the bunker, quickly climbing into the elevator. The descent down was very fast. Branch quickly climbed out and went to his computer.

He quickly logged on and pulled up the search engine. He decided to search up about his symptoms to figure out how sick he is. Branch knows how to take care of a cold. However, nothing showed up. His tail started flicking again. He groaned before searching up:

What does it mean to cough until a flower petal comes out?

Suddenly, the search engine started giving him answers. There were many different links and different websites. Hanahaki? What even is that? Branch rolled his eyes before clicking on a website. He took a seat before he started reading.

Hanahaki Disease.
Hanahaki is a disease in which the victim experiencing the Hanahaki may cough up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided, or unrequited, love. Hanahaki was first reported in eastern civilizations. Hanahaki affects any and all species.
Hanahaki has been reported to grow inside the lungs. Although, the disease varies and the flower grows in the heart or stomach. It often takes months to years to fully develop. The victim starts coughing up petals and it grows in intensity and pain until the victim starts vomiting entire flowers. Vomiting entire flowers is the final stage of the disease.
There are two ways to cure this disease. The victim confesses their feelings and has them reciprocate the victim’s feelings. Or the victim has to undergo a surgery to remove the flowers. Unfortunately, removal by surgery removes the feelings the victim has for the person. Some reports have even noticed that victims that had surgery seem to forget their former beloved.

Branch was frozen. This was just junk. There was no way that this “Hanahaki” was real. Branch scoffed before closing the laptop. He knew there was no way that this disease was real. Right? Branch’s eyes go towards the Mittensettia petal sitting right next to his laptop. His tail starts to curl around his leg. Branch rolls his eyes and quickly leaves the room. Branch didn’t want to think about it anymore. There was no way that disease was real, and there definitely was no way that he had it.

<3

Branch just stared at Poppy after she explained her crazy idea.

“Okay, tell me one more time?” Branch asked. He was very confused about what Poppy had been talking about. She rolled her eyes and took her scrapbook again.

“Okay, I’ve talked to all of the other leaders and they agreed. We are going to have the very first annual Trolls Kingdom Secret Holiday Gift Swap! We’re going to give out invitations to all trolls. Inside the invitations is someone’s name. Depending on who you get, you have to give them a gift. Doesn’t that sound like a fantastic idea!” Poppy explained. Her tail was swishing behind her, expressing how happy she was. She had a huge bright smile on her face. Branch could feel himself smile at her. Poppy seemed super happy about this gift swap.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea Poppy. It could be a chance to strengthen the bond between other kingdoms as well,” he said. Poppy nodded and started ranting about all the ideas she had. Branch was listening, but it was hard to breathe. The longer he kept staring at Poppy, the worse it hurt.

Suddenly, Branch felt one of those coughing fits. He shot up from the seat in Poppy’s pod, excused himself, and ran out of there. Branch kept running until he got to some clearing in the woods. He tripped to the ground, trying to take in air. Branch started coughing, hitting his chest. Branch could feel something in his throat, just like the time he threw up the Mittensettia petal. He continued to cough until finally whatever was stuck in his throat came out. Branch closed his eyes, trying to regain his breath. His throat was burning, he needed some water. He sat up and looked to his side. That’s when he saw four Mittensettia petals on the ground. Right where he had thrown up.

Once Branch had seen those petals on the ground, he scooped them up and ran to his bunker. He then set up defense measures and locked himself in his bunker. Usually, he would spend the days working or scrapbooking. Other days when he was bored, he would sit and stare at the petals. He had a total of five petals now. The first one was the smallest petal he’s seen. Out of the four he had recently coughed up, there was a small one, the other three were medium sized.

Branch sat and stared at the petals hoping that if one day he stared long enough, they would disappear. Occasionally, one of the snack pack members would come knocking on the door. Branch would either ignore them or answer the door. When they asked where he was, he would just tell them he was busy working in the bunker.

One day, Poppy tried to come check on him. She knocked on the door, and Branch thought it had been DJ. So when he opened the door, he was surprised to see Poppy. Poppy gave him a smile as soon as he opened the door. His heart, or his lungs, hurt at the sight of her. She really was lovely.

“Hey, I just wanted to come check on you. I was a bit worried after you stormed out of my pod. Then, it’s getting colder, I didn’t know if the bunker had heating. But, I just wanted to ask if you were going to participate in the gift swap,” Poppy started rambling, but she finished off with another one of her smiles.

Branch really wanted to say no. To tell her that he wouldn’t be able to. But how could he? Him saying no would’ve just broken her heart so much. So he sighed, rubbing his face with his hands.

“I should be able to participate in the gift swap, Poppy. I’ve just been very busy wintering up my bunker,” He agreed to participate, but he had to lie about why he’d been missing. Poppy didn’t realize it was a lie and fully believed Branch. She smiled brighter and Branch felt his chest growing tighter.

“Well, I have some more work to do in my bunker. I’ll see you then?” Branch said. He really needed Poppy out of here before he started coughing. Poppy nodded, and skipped off to the village. Once Branch got back into the bunker, he had ten petals in his total.

<3

Branch was exhausted. He had worked himself to the bone for three whole weeks. The bunker was winter proof, and Branch decided to add some things here and there. Over the three weeks, he hadn’t interacted with Poppy at all. He had only eighteen petals now. Bench figured that not being around Poppy made it easier. But thinking about her also caused the coughing fits.

He had no idea how he was supposed to avoid his best and only friend. Plus, he had to participate in the Gift swap in a few days. Branch groaned and laid his head on the table. Today was one of the days he decided to sit and stare at the petals.

Branch wishes he could do something about this disease. He didn’t want to get rid of his feelings for Poppy, but he knew she would never reciprocate. He shook his head, gently grabbing the petals before putting them in his jar.

He decided to scavenge for some Mittensettias. He was going to give some to Poppy whenever he saw her again. He knew that it would probably make things a bit worse, Branch honestly wouldn’t mind throwing up a few more flowers. At least he could spend time with Poppy.

Branch exited out of the bunker’s elevator. He started walking towards the edge of the village. At the library, he read up more on Mittensettias. He was originally hoping to get some for Poppy. Before he found out he had some stupid disease. His tail flicked side to side in anger.

Branch wasn’t angry at Poppy. He was angry at himself. He should’ve just said something sooner. Maybe she actually did like him. Branch could only hope so. He swears that he’s going to confess soon.

Walking into a clearing, Branch sees a bush with pretty coral flowers. He gets closer to inspect them. They’re Mittensettias.

<3

Poppy was nervous. She really hoped that Branch was okay. Her tail slowly wraps around her leg. He usually was always out and about, trying to help the village with everything. Recently, he’s been holed up in his bunker.

Which isn’t a bad thing. She just wishes he would’ve gotten out more. Poppy didn’t want him to revert back to when he was gray. That’s why he’s going to have to participate in the gift swap. Maybe he’ll be out of his bunker more if he had reasons to be.

Poppy decides she’ll think about the Branch problem later. Right now, she’s fixing up the invitations for the gift swap. She’s liking how they’re coming out.

<3

The Gift Swap

Branch is standing outside of the bunker with his gift. He sees Sheila flying towards him. On board Sheila is a ball of pink. There’s Poppy. Branch can feel himself smiling and he holds onto the Mittensettias in his hand. He’s a little scared that she won’t like them. But he knows that these are her favorite flowers.

Suddenly, Poppy grabs him by the arm and he’s flying in the air. She flings him into Sheila and he gets up a little dizzy. His tail swishes behind him. Poppy looks at him funny, before walking up and looking at his bow.

“What’s the bowtie for?” Branch chuckles as Poppy observes his bow.

“Well, it IS the holiday season,” He says. Poppy just smiles at him and rolls her eyes. Before she walks away, Branch gets her attention.

“What’s up, Branch?” Poppy asked. He quickly took the Mittensettias out from behind his back, giving them to Poppy.

“I got these for you…” Poppy’s smile brightened and she snatched them out of his hands.

“You got me Mittensettias! They’re my favorite flower ever!” As Poppy kept gushing over the flowers, Branch just stared at her. Poppy’s nose twitched.

“Too bad, I’m allergic though-” Poppy says, before she’s interrupted by her sneezing. The petals fly off the flower onto Branch. As Poppy continues sneezing, the petals keep on flying onto Branch. He shakes his head, quickly grabbing the flowers (they were really just stems), throwing them overboard. Poppy kinda giggles a little, before walking to a picnic basket.

“Those are the invitations?” Branch pointed towards the baskets. There were actually a lot of them. He wondered how many invitations there were. Did Poppy make them all?

“Yes! We’re going to be flying over the kingdom, giving them to each and every troll,” Poppy explained. Branch thought it was easy enough. All they had to do was throw the invitations out the side of the air balloon. Poppy lightly picked up a basket, pulling out an invitation. It looked like any normal invitation Poppy would make.

“So this is the invitation. Once you open it, you pull it out to see who you got!” Poppy goes through how to work the invitation. Branch tries to pull at the slip of paper with the name, but Poppy slaps his hand away.

“Hey! What was that-” Branch starts before Poppy shoves a finger in his face and shushes him. Branch shuts up and listens to Poppy tell him that they’ll get their invitations after they hand them all out. She starts to swing the basket around, singing. Branch rolls his eyes before smiling, joining her in her song.

<3

Branch was still confused on how fast they delivered the invitations. All the kingdoms had said they got the invitations, already planning their gifts. Actually, many of the trolls were at Pop village already.

“Wow, why’s everyone here?” Branch asked. Looking around he saw tons of trolls helping each other wrap gifts.

“We’re holding the gift swap here! In Pop village. Some of the other trolls don’t really know how to wrap gifts, so I thought they could come early if they needed help!” Poppy explained. Branch listened, knowing that she would most definitely offer help with their gifts.

“Oh! I almost forgot,” Poppy pulled out a basket with the last two invitations. She grabbed one, quickly handing it to Branch. Branch stared at his while Poppy grabbed hers. Branch could feel the dread crawling through his body. Why was he scared of this invitation?

“We should open ours at the same time! But don’t tell me who you got duh,” Poppy said. Branch nodded. He suddenly did not want to do the gift swap anymore. What was wrong with him? He just had to get a gift for a random troll.

“Oh my god! I can’t wait. This troll is going to have the best gift ever!” Poppy exclaimed, nearly bouncing out of her skin. Branch opened the gift, chuckling to himself.

“You do give the best gifts. It’s super intimidating…” Branch said before pulling out the slip of paper. His heart dropped.

POPPY

This was not good. He got Poppy?! Branch had to reread the little slip of paper. He couldn’t even be around her too long before his stupid heart started forcing petals out his throat. How was he supposed to give her a gift?

“Oooh! Interesting. Well, better start getting this person their gift!” Poppy started to walk off, smiling. She must have gotten one of her friends. Branch said something, and started to walk off to the bunker. He could already feel his throat tighten, begging for him to cough up more petals.

Branch had already walked halfway to the bunker. He was zoned out, staring at the tiny paper he had gotten. The invitation he had opened held Poppy’s name in it. Honestly, he wanted to get Poppy. But he was so scared. What if she didn’t like his gift? What if he ends up coughing on her whenever he gives it to her?

Branch hopes he doesn’t end up coughing at the gift swap. Walking over to a tree, he slides down to sit on the ground. He feels his tail wrapping his leg, as his chest constricts. The feeling spreads to his throat, and he starts to get a coughing fit.

The petals are larger, he can feel them. Or, at least he thinks they are. The petals are fuzzy, so they get stuck in his throat. His coughing fits always last long.

Branch coughs three out, before it stops. He gasps for air, trying to regain his breath. Hitting his chest, trying to get the flowers stuck in his throat out. It doesn’t work, so Branch goes to just cough them up himself.

Once Branch finally feels them get dislodged, they fly out of his throat. His throat is raw and it hurts really bad from coughing. Branch swears that he lost his voice with all that coughing. He stares at the petals and sees three large ones, a medium sized one, with 4 tiny petals. Branch sighs, collecting his flowers and slip of paper. Walking the rest of the way to the bunker, he thinks of what to do for the gift swap.

<3

Branch stares at his notebook. It’s getting pretty late, and he’s definitely exhausted. His writing is all over the place, not a single coherent thought. His eyes keep unfocusing and he can’t read what he’s writing. Branch can’t recall it, but he most definitely fell asleep at one point. Maybe twice.

Branch groans, standing up from the desk. He almost falls down, but regains his balance. He takes small steps all the way to his kitchen, before getting a cup of water. Drinking the water, he decides he’ll work on his gift tomorrow. He has no idea what his gift will be, but he knows he can come up with something.

Branch continues the trek through his bunker, until he reaches his room. Gently placing the Mittensettia petals down on the desk, he goes to his bed. Branch flops onto it, immediately relaxing further into the bed. Branch sighs, already beginning to doze off.

Branch opens his eyes, groaning. He wanted to stay sleeping, his bed was so warm and comforting. Unfortunately, he needed to start making Poppy’s gift. Branch lifted himself out of his bed, quickly getting ready for the day. He decided he’d go to the market to see what supplies they have. Maybe something could jog his brain, giving him ideas. Branch smiles, quickly climbing into his elevator.

Once it reaches the top, he opens the trapdoor, climbing onto the grass. It crunches underneath his feet. Branch notices the leaves and grass are a lot more frosty. He takes another step, the frost on the grass crunching underneath his feet. He continues walking to the village, realizing that winter is coming faster than usual. Branch keeps walking, lost in his thoughts as he enters the village. In the marketplace, he quickly looks around. There’s nothing for him to use to make a gift for Poppy.

“Hey, come see young man,” a troll called. Branch looked around noticing an elderly troll staring at him, smiling. He hesitantly walked up to her, stopping at her stall. She had yarns in her stall, a wide variety of colors.

“You need a gift idea don’t you?” she asked. Branch looked around, nodding slowly. The elderly troll started walking around her stand, grabbing different yarns. She grabbed a dark green, as well as some other variations of green. She grabbed a burgundy next, following reds and corals. The troll gently placed them in a baggie, before handing it to Branch.

He hesitated for a moment, before he took the baggie. Branch was confused on what he could do with yarn. He went to thank her, before she disappeared into her stall. His tail slowly wrapped around his leg, nervously looking deeper into the stall for the lady. Branch shrugged, slowly walking off from the stall. His ears twitched, noticing the amounts of trolls in Pop Village. It makes sense since Pop Village is where the gift swap was being held.

Branch continued walking until he reached the forest. Unable to find anything, Branch definitely needed to brainstorm some ideas and fast. His tail gently hit the bag in his hands. He looked inside, looking at the yarns. Maybe they would give him an idea? Branch continued walking towards his bunker, still thinking of ideas.

<3

Branch grabbed at his hair. He was beyond frustrated. He had been brainstorming for the past two days, yet each idea seemed to be worse and worse. One idea he had thought of was making her an accessory. But that wasn’t good enough for her. He thought of making her a puzzle, but she wasn’t the type to like puzzles. Anything he thought was wrong or wasn’t enough for Poppy. All the while, Branch kept coughing a single petal. It was like it was mocking him.

Branch just wanted this gift to be perfect for Poppy.

His chest tightened with pain as he started another coughing fit. This one was fast and short. It wasn’t even as painful as the other ones. Branch sighed as he looked at the two petals. He placed them next to the yarn when he froze. He stared at the yarn, then at the Mittensettia petals. Branch looked back at the yarn, before he picked up it. He compared the color to the petals. It was almost identical. His tail started swishing from side to side when he got an idea.

Branch quickly pulled out the other yarn the lady gave him, noticing the reds and greens. His face stretched into a smile. It was a real smile because it hurt his face. Branch ran to a cabinet, quickly opening it. He quickly fished through the contents, trying to look for the tools he would need to crochet some flowers.

Branch ran back to his table, throwing the items onto the table. His tail continued to swish side from side, getting slightly faster. Branch grabbed some paper so he could begin drawing up the flowers. His smile grew, this was going to be the greatest gift ever.

<3

He definitely sucked at this. He definitely overestimated his skills. Branch was able to make a “decent” looking stem, but he pretty much forgot how to make anything else. Branch’s ears drooped down, tail wrapping around his leg nervously. Which was why Branch decided to get some help from his friends. He never really had friends before, so he was nervous about asking them for help. Branch took a deep breath before knocking on the door of the pod. Almost immediately, he could hear stumbling footsteps and shouting. Maybe he shouldn’t have come?

“Sorry, Poppy, we’re coming-” Satin flung open the door, worried. Her face froze as she stared at Branch.

“That’s not Poppy Satin. I think that’s Branch…” Chenille peeked over her shoulder, still doing whatever she was. Satin frowned and rolled her eyes before moving out the way. Branch quickly walked in, looking around. Their pod was pretty normal, although it was slightly larger to fit all their belongings and fashion things.

“So. What did you need, Branch?” Chenille asked, before she finished whatever she was working on. It looked like a green dress with some snowflakes on the bottom. Satin took it, starting to add some fluff on the dress.

“I needed help with something for my gift,” Branch said. As soon as he said that, Satin quickly abandoned the dress and walked up to Branch.

“Well why didn’t you say that? What do you need help with?” Satin asked. Chenille was behind her, nodding her head. Branch pulled out the yarn from the bag, and the twins seemed to get the idea.

“Are you trying to sew something for your person?” Chenille asked, smiling. Branch shrugged.

“I was trying to crochet their favorite flowers. I was taught by my Grandma, but I haven’t actually crocheted in a while. I’m a bit…rusty,” Branch explained. Satin and Chenille nodded, listening to Branch.

“Well, we can help you. Chenille can try and help you with the stems, and I’ll help with the petals! Does that sound good?” Chenille asked. Satin nodded, before she asked, “What kind of flower are you making?”

“Mittensettias,” Branch told them. He could’ve sworn their eyes had widened once he mentioned the flower, but their faces looked normal. Except for the huge smiles on their face.

“Aww~ I didn’t know you were such a romantic Branch,” Chenille teased. Branch could feel his face heat up, his ears turning a dark violet. They giggled before dragging Branch to a desk to start on the crocheting.

“Are you ready Branch?” Chenille questioned. Branch nodded, his tail slowly swishing from side to side. This was all for Poppy. Anything to make the gift perfect for Poppy.

Branch was walking back to his bunker, with little crochet flowers in hand. Branch couldn’t stop staring at them. They were so perfect. Poppy would definitely love them.

He was actually grateful Satin and Chenille decided to help him. He knew they were his friends, but he wasn’t sure if they would have helped him. Satin and Chenille were even able to show him tips and pointers to help him with crocheting the next time.

Branch paused at the bunker, slowly climbing into the elevator. Pulling the lever, the platform lowered itself into his work space. Once the elevator stopped, he stepped off the platform and walked to his workbench. Branch placed the flowers down, keeping them away from any of the tools that would damage or break the flowers. Pulling out more papers, Branch started to brainstorm ideas.

He just kept on writing. Every one of his ideas seemed to go from his brain straight to the paper. It wasn’t any dumb or weird ideas. They were all great gift ideas for Poppy. This is good. The last thing Branch needed to do was asked all of his friends what the ideal gift is. They’d be able to help him.

<3

Branch had a bit of a problem. He didn’t know how to ask what the ideal gift for Poppy would be. Well, he could, obviously, but he would need to tell them who he got. Once he told them, they would immediately tell Poppy. He just knew it. Branch had already gone and talked to Satin and Chenille about the flowers and crocheting. They were out of the picture. He couldn’t ask Smidge or DJ. Definitely would tell Poppy the second he told them. Biggie could be trusted, but he wasn’t sure Biggie would be able to keep quiet long enough. Biggie got excited easily, so Biggie was also out. Branch knew Guy Diamond was most definitely busy with Tiny. Branch wouldn’t want to put extra pressure on him. He was pacing around his bunker’s space, wondering what to do. Who could he ask to help him?

Branch suddenly had an idea. Due to the gift swap, all the trolls should be at Pop Village. He had recalled seeing a bunch of funk trolls earlier during the week. Maybe he could ask Darnell?

His tail started swishing side to side. Branch would ask Darnell for advice. Then he would invite them down to the bunker once he built whatever idea he came up with.

Branch ran to the elevator, using his tail to pull the lever to the top. He was lightly bouncing on his toes, he wanted and needed to make the perfect gift for Poppy. If she didn’t like his gift…

Branch didn’t want to think about it. It made his heart and chest twist with pain. He would probably have another coughing fit soon. Maybe when he was walking towards the village, he could take a rest and wait for it to happen? Nah, he would be fine.

<3

Branch was actually not fine. Once he got out of the bunker, he immediately froze, unable to breath. He tried to suck in air, but he felt the familiar petals stuck in his throat. He started to cough, trying to get them out.

No matter how hard he coughed, they were still there. They were clogging his throat, barely letting any air in. Branch had to do something. What could he do?

He knew he needed to get the petals out his throat, before he suffocated. Branch decided to cough harder. He felt the petals moving forward. That was good, right? So, Branch keeps coughing, trying to dislodge the petals. He hit his chest.

The petals flew out of his mouth, and Branch was able to breathe again. He sat down, trying to regain the breath he had lost due to the petals. As he was trying to regain the air, he was also trying to calm down.

During his coughing fit, he was actually terrified. That was one of the first scary fits he’s had. He was so scared because Branch thought he was going to die. He couldn’t feel any air pass through his throat. Branch was still shaking like a leaf.

He glanced at the petals and saw blood.

Blood

Branch froze, eyes stuck staring at the petals. He picked the six of them up, staring at the blood that was splattered on it. Was Branch dying? Was this the final stage?

No it couldn’t be. There was no way. Branch has only been coughing on petals. The final stage is when the victim coughs up full flowers. So, he wasn’t dying. That was good.

He’ll just forget about it. As long as he wasn’t dying, everything was fine. Branch slowly stood up, brushing off any blood he had on his hands. He quickly made his way to the village, trying to distract his mind.

Branch noticed that the village square was very crowded. He was correct as well, there were funk trolls walking around. Many of the trolls were getting wrapping paper, boxes, or bows to create their gift boxes. Most of the classical trolls were helping put up the decorations, since they could reach so high. They had a few trolls underneath them to catch anything if something fell.

Huh.

Poppy had made sure to set up safety measures. Branch’s chest hurt a lot more at that, so he just started walking faster. Speaking of Poppy, he saw her standing with Delta Dawn and Holly Darlin’. She had some tape in her hand, so she must have been talking about gift wrapping or something. Maybe he could go talk to her?

He tried to sneak up behind her, but Delta had noticed him.

“Uh, Branch? What you doing lil’ bud?”

Branch froze, as he watched Poppy turn around. She seemed surprised. Well, he was sneaking up on her.

“I came to…get some wrapping paper. I don’t have any, but I knew Poppy definitely would have some so…” Branch lied. Holly raised an eyebrow.

“Oh yeah, I totally have some! Just give me a minute!” Poppy exclaimed, quickly turning to the other two. Branch just stood there as they were whispering, but Delta and Holly looked worried.

Poppy came back, giving him plain wrapping paper. His tail curled around his leg. Poppy knew he would rather plain paper instead of glittery flashy paper. His tail started thumping against his leg.

Poppy grabbed him, pushing him back to the bunker. He turn around, stopping her.

“I…I wanted to thank you. So, thank you Poppy…” Branch said. Poppy had smiled, but he was drawn to what Delta and Holly were doing out of the corner of his eye. They were throwing bushes in front of the gift’s tag.

Oh it was Poppy’s gift. Wait.

Did that say his name?

Poppy waved a hand in front of his face, and he looked back at her. He smiled, before running off.

Okay, so Poppy probably had him. We both got each other. Branch could feel his chest tightening at the thought of Poppy having him for the gift swap. Right now, he needed to get his mind off of Poppy before he had a coughing fit in front of so many trolls. Branch still needed to visit Prince D and ask about his gift.

He didn’t really know where Darnell lived, but he did know where Cooper’s pod was. Maybe he was there?

Branch continued walking until he approached Cooper’s pod. He was shocked it took that easy to find. Well, the village was really close together. Walking up to the pod’s door, Branch knocked on the fuzzy door. The door opened revealing Cooper. He grinned.

“Branch! What brings you here?” Cooper asked.

“Is your brother here? I wanted to ask you guys about my gift,” Branch explained. Cooper made an “o” face, before grinning and giggling. He nodded, moving out of the way for Branch to walk inside.

“Hey, D! Branch needs some help with his gift,” Cooper started to explain, kicking the door closed. “He came to us for some help!” Cooper continued.

Prince D’s head popped out of one of the rooms, with a smile on his face.

“You need some help? I’ve got you dude,” Darnell said. Branch nodded, trying to calm down his nerves.

“What would be a good gift idea? I have some, but I just want feedback,” Branch explained. Prince D seemed to be thinking, while Cooper kept smiling.

“Well, who do you have?” asked Cooper. Branch fidgeted with his hands, very nervous.

“Listen, you don’t have to tell us. I understand. Coop here just wants to help better,” Darnell stated.

“You aren’t going to tell anyone right, Coop?” Prince D asked. Cooper put his hand up, mocking a salute.

“Yes, sir! I won’t tell a soul!” Cooper started to giggle, along with Prince D.

“It’s Poppy.”

Prince D and Cooper turned to Branch, who was looking at his feet. Cooper slightly tilted his head in confusion.

“I got Poppy as my person. I want to give her a good gift she’ll appreciate,” Branch explained. Darnell nodded, understanding. Cooper seemed surprised, before he ran into another room. Prince D rolled his eyes.

“He’s probably excited you actually told us. Anyway, some advice. You probably know more of her favorite things than I do. Give her a gift that revolves around that,” Prince D said. Cooper came back, nodding.

“Exactly! The Snack Pack always gives Poppy gifts. When I give her a gift, it’s always something she likes. Maybe even an activity she likes,” Cooper added. Branch nodded. He understood what they were saying. But it didn’t exactly help him. He didn’t want to make something and she ended up not liking it. That’d be so embarrassing.

“Maybe you can come to my bunker and see what I’ve thought of so far?” asked Branch. Cooper excitedly nodded his head. Prince nodded as well.

“Sounds like a great idea, dude.”

<3

Branch was a bit nervous. Sure, he’s invited people over before. But these people were going to judge him. Well, they were actually judging his gift he was working on. But it was still nerve racking.

The elevator had gotten to the floor level. He stepped off, walking into his workshop. Branch did hear Cooper “ooh-ing” in amazement at his bunker. His chest filled with warmth and pride. Branch liked it whenever he invited someone and they complimented the bunker.

“Man, how long did this take to make?” Prince D asked curiously. Branch shrugged, not really sure.

“I was maybe around seven or eight years old when I started. Some time right after the escape,” Bran

The twins didn’t really say anything afterwards, but Branch had stepped onto a platform. He took a pointer stick, before telling them his plans.

“Okay, so I was thinking. Poppy likes to do her hair. She also loves sweet treats. She also really likes to scrapbook. Anyway, I decided to make her a contraption that does her hair, while making a smoothie. It also makes a scrapbook of whatever she wants. Somehow. Do you guys see where I’m going with this?” Branch explained. He had paused seeing the clear confusion on the twins' faces. He thought it was pretty clear. Was Branch rambling?

Cooper or Darnell said something but Branch couldn’t hear them. He continued his plans.

“I don’t want to get her something to crazy. She’ll hate me. But I don’t want to get her something so small and useless. It’s got to be perfect!” Branch slightly cringed at that. He shouldn’t be thinking about that, he needed to think about his gift.

He tore off the blanket that was on top of his contraption.

Branch clambered in the seat of it. He quickly turned it to n, where it started to whirr around his head. The noise was a bit too much, but he could handle it. The machine started making the smoothie, while there was a piece of paper with a glue heart getting glitter over it.

Branch smiled. It was working. But then it wasn’t. It started to smoke, scrapbooking materials falling on him and in the smoothie.

Cooper and Darnell were very far away, trying to not get caught by the machine. That’s whenever it blew up.

<3

Branch groaned, spread out on the grass. Right after the machine started to go haywire, it exploded. He doesn’t know how he flew out of his bunker, into outer space, but he wasn’t thinking about that.

All that was on his mind was the gift swap. It was happening tomorrow. Yet, the gift he had made for hours broke. Now, all he had was some flowers to give to Poppy. His tail wrapped around his waist as tears built up in his eyes.

His ears twitched, suddenly hearing a voice. Branch looked around until he spotted a small spec of white. Tiny Diamond.

“Oh. Uncle Branch! Wow. What happened here?” Tiny Diamond asked. He seemed concerned.

“I was testing my gift and it…blew up,” Branch explained. Tiny Diamond, smiled, walking over the Branch.

“Well lemme tell you something. I went on this crazy adventure. You already have the gift. You just need to look through the clutter,” Tiny said.

There was angelic wind and it was glowing. Branch frowned.

“I’m sorry. I don’t get it. I got nothing,” Branch apologized. Tiny Diamond whined about it, before running off.

Branch sighed, getting up to clean the remains of the bunker. He picked up papers, all have some kind of burn on them. Branch frowned more, his tail and ears dropping further.

Branch picked up a picture of him and Poppy. They were sitting next to each other talking. Poppy’s friends had taken the picture. Suddenly, an idea came to mind. His tail started swishing through the air.

Sure, it wasn’t a machine, but it was definitely perfect for Poppy.

<3

Branch got into the bunker, slowly opening up a book cover. He stared at all the materials, pictures, stickers, crayons, glitter, and markers he had gathered. Branch sighed, before taking a paper and a picture. He started scrapbooking many of the adventures he remembered. His adventures with Poppy.

He knew she loved scrapbooking. She also loved all the little adventures they do as well. So that’s what he was making. A scrapbook that had all the moments from their adventures. It was the perfect gift.

Branch tail swishes side to side, a smile on his face. He couldn’t wait to give this to Poppy tomorrow.

<3

It took forever. Branch was pretty sure he had glued two of his fingers together. There was glitter everywhere.

He didn’t know how it got in his hair, or on his clothes. Branch made sure he was very careful. He stared at the scrapbook.

Poppy was definitely going to like it.

He closed it, carefully putting it away to make sure it was safe. Branch grabbed the fake Mittensettias, placing them next to the book. As he was getting ready for bed, he had another coughing fit, only coughing a single petal.

Chapter Text

<3

Today was the day. The gift swap.

Branch had no reason to be so nervous. He had his gift ready for Poppy. Pop Village and all the citizens had worked their hardest to set up for the party. Even some of the other troll tribes volunteered to help out on the decorating.

Branch was nervous for no reason. He kept pacing around the bunker, mindlessly playing with his tail. Branch tried everything to take his mind off of the gift swap. He had gone to each layer of the bunker and deep cleaned it. He went and made sure he had all of his supplies stocked. Branch had mindlessly created machines to keep him occupied.

Branch was just waiting for the Snack Pack to come to get him. Or maybe they would forget him and he wouldn’t have to go. No, Branch would still go. He was just so nervous. Why couldn’t he shake this nervous energy?

*knock knock*

Branch’s head snapped towards the platform, quickly scrambling to get his things ready. He grabbed his gift, before gently placing it in his hair. His hair hardened around it to make sure it wouldn’t fall. Branch climbed onto the platform, switching the lever. It slowly started its crawl to the top.

During the slow ride, Branch continued messing with his tail and hands. Nothing bad was going to happen. He was going to go to the party and have fun with his friends. As soon as it was time to gift swap, he’d give his gift to Poppy. After that, all the trolls would be happy with their gifts. The party would start up again.

Branch nodded, slowly letting go of his tail. Sure, he was scared Poppy might not like his gift. But he was going to have fun and celebrate with everyone else at Pop Village.

The platform stopped suddenly. Branch looked at the hatch, before opening it. He saw all of his friends there. Biggie, Cooper, Prince D, Satin, Chenille, Guy Diamond, Smidge, DJ Suki, all of them. Once he climbed out of the bunker, they all gave him a quick hug before stepping back.

“You got your gift?” asked Satin. Satin and Chenille both giggled when Branch nodded, his face lightly turning darker.

“Well, let’s go. They need all the Pop trolls to be at the party before any other trolls show up!” Biggie stated. They all started to run in the direction of the village. Branch quickly followed after them.

See? There was no reason to be nervous. Everything was fine. This celebration was going to be okay.

<3

It took a while for them to actually get back to Pop Village. The walk was long from Branch’s bunker. The entire time, Branch got progressively more nervous.

He knew Poppy would like his gift. Branch just wanted to make sure his gift was perfect for her. His chest tightened lightly, so he had to stop thinking about it.

Branch tuned into the conversation, listening as each friend talked about the party.

Apparently, Poppy allowed for all the different kingdoms to bring whatever food they wanted. She had also planned tons of super fun activities to do as well. Branch wasn’t a fan of these activities. Branch wasn’t even a fan of parties.

Parties were always so noisy and the bright lights hurt his head. There were always too many people trying to fit in such a small space.

Poppy explained this party was going to be a lot more formal. While there was going to be games and other things, she wanted to tone it down. Poppy asked for no blaring lights, no blaring music, no glitter bombs. Honestly, even if Branch didn’t need to come to the gift swap celebration, he would’ve. Totally not because Poppy would’ve asked him to come or whatever. He just liked calmer parties.

“Oh! Look how pretty it is! The decoration team did such a good job!” exclaimed Biggie. The others kept complimenting the decorations, while Branch was distracted. He was trying to find Poppy. The party would be easier to handle if Poppy was there.

Branch finally spotted her. Oh, she looked lovely. Poppy was wearing a green dress with snowflakes and some white fluff at the bottom. There were also some leg warmers with her outfit as well. On her head, Poppy had a pretty winter themed crown. Branch started walking towards her. Branch could already feel himself start to relax. Poppy noticed him as well, waving at Branch. He waved back, smiling.

“Branch! I can’t believe you made it!” Poppy exclaimed happily. She bounced on the tips of her toes. She was very excited about this celebration. The rest of the Snack Pack appeared, finally finding Poppy. Poppy waved and greeted them all, before pointing behind her.

“I have to go with the other leaders to welcome all of the trolls. Would you guys wanna come with me?” Poppy asked. The Snack Pack declined, saying they wanted to check on everything else.

“I’ll go with you Poppy,” Branch said. Poppy smiled, and turned around to walk off. Branch started to follow after her, trying to ignore his friends teasing him.

<3

Branch was somehow already exhausted. He had gone with Poppy, and talked with some of the other leaders. Poppy appreciated his help with welcoming all the other trolls. Branch could’ve sworn Delta was eyeing him suspiciously, but he just tried to ignore it.

Now that all the trolls were here, Poppy finally started the party. The trolls had started to talk to each other, most likely making friends or something. Branch was able to talk to his friends, but he was mostly alone off to the side. He didn’t mind.

Branch didn’t like social gatherings. He also didn’t like all the games they were playing. Some of them were interesting, but he’d rather stay out of it. Branch just liked to observe.

“Hey Branch! What ya doing?” someone asked. Branch would always recognize that voice anywhere.

“Hey Poppy,” Branch said, waving his paw. She waved back as she walked up to him.

“So, I was wondering. We have a bunch of games we’re playing. Do you maybe wanna come play some of them? I promise they’re fun and safe!” Poppy asked, her tail swishing behind her.

Branch didn’t know what to say. He never played any of the games. He wasn’t really great at them when he was younger.

-

Branch was standing off to the side, watching all of the other kids playing with the ball. The caretaker had allowed for the kids to go outside. All the children decided to play a simple game of kickball.

The older kids said they were the team leaders. Each kid was picked to be on a team.

Except for Branch. Branch knew there was an odd amount of kids. He was just hoping they would’ve picked him. His ears dropped, tail wrapping around his leg. The other kids pretended that he didn’t exist. He stared at his paws, before his eyes started to burn and get blurry.

So, Branch ran off to the bushes to intently watch the other kids play their game. Watching them would allow him to learn the game. Maybe that way, he’ll actually get picked next time.

Poor Branch had gotten his hopes up though. They never picked him for their stupid games.

-

Branch was very nervous. He had never played any of these games. Yet, he had told Poppy yes to the offer. Of course he did.

They quickly got into place for the game. Poppy said it was a “cakewalk”. Branch didn’t understand at all.

She had explained that music would play and everyone would walk forward until the music stopped. Once it stopped, you looked at what number you were on. If you had won the game, you got a cupcake.

Branch thought it was easy enough. It was mostly Pop trolls playing. There were a few rock trolls, even if they didn’t eat sweets normally. Suddenly, Poppy started to talk again.

“Okay, does anyone have any song suggestions?” Poppy asked. All the trolls immediately started suggesting tons of songs. Branch just wanted to get this over with already. Poppy picked a song, played it, and started the game. Branch kinda zoned out until the music turned off.

Branch looked at his number. He didn’t have the number that was picked. Branch was kinda bummed out about it, honestly. So, he decided to play another game. Then, another game. Then, another game after that.

Branch was getting frustrated. Branch just wanted to win once! He wanted to prove that he was good at the game. At least, one time. His tail started to wrap around his leg, feeling very frustrated.

“Okay! This is going to be the last game. So, I’ll play a classical Pop Troll favorite. Sorry, rockers!” Poppy said. The Rock Trolls rolled their eyes before smiling. Most of the music was some Pop or funk song, so they were pretty cool with it. Poppy made sure to play an occasional rock song ever now and then as well. She started up the music, and let the game start again.

Although, the music was very familiar to Branch. He just couldn’t place a finger on it. The singers sing really well together, starting the song off scatting together. They had said something, but Branch couldn’t hear. He was trying to think of where he had heard this. Branch heard some trolls squealing and giggling at the song. What was this song?

“Well, there she goes-”

Branch suddenly felt chills down his spine, skin starting to itch. Maybe that’s why this song was so familiar.

<3

Branch didn’t think it was funny. He had finally won the game, but that stupid song was playing. Branch’s skin was still itchy, he was still so angry. Branch angrily took another bite out of the cupcake.

All the trolls had gathered back in the main area of Pop Village. They were going to start the gift swap. Branch was getting nervous by the second. He had spent all this time on Poppy’s gift. What if she didn’t like it? What if when he gave it to her, he started coughing? Oh, that would be embarrassing…

Branch could feel his chest tighten. Right after he gave her his gift, he was going to have to run away. Branch tried to calm himself down.

“Alright everybody! Now that we’ve had time to party, play, and chat, it’s time for the gift swap!” Poppy announced. Everyone cheered around the entire village. Looks like everyone else was excited as well.

“Alright, alright. Everyone can begin swapping their gifts!” Poppy said. After that everyone started moving towards their person. Branch shook his paws, trying to get the nervousness out of him. He slowly stalked his way to where Poppy was.

Poppy turned around, immediately spotting him. She started waving at him. So much for trying to be sneaky. He waved back, walking up to her.

“Hey, Poppy,” His tail curled around his leg. His eyes were darting everywhere. God he was so nervous.

“Hi Branch! Did you already swap gifts?” Poppy asked. Branch shook his head no. He kept fiddling with his paws. Branch had no reason to be nervous. Poppy would love this gift.

“Why don’t we say who we got at the same time?” Branch proposed. Poppy’s face lights up, nodding.

“That’s a great idea! Ready? 1,2,3…”

“You!”
“You.”

Poppy and Branch had both pulled out their papers, showing each other the papers. Poppy smiled brightly, tail wagging behind her. Branch smiled as well.

“Yeah, I made you this really cool gift,” Branch started.

“Well, that’s great!” Poppy said.

“But, then it kinda blew up in my face,” Branch stated, defeated. He cringed thinking about his first gift idea. Branch was grateful that Tiny Diamond said whatever he said. Even if it didn’t make any sense at all.

“Oh, well, that’s not so great,” Poppy said, concerned.

“Yeah. My…My gift is kinda lame,” Branch said, reaching shaky paws into his hair. Grabbing the scrapbook, he pulled it out and held it in his paws.

“Here…” Branch put the scrapbook forward, allowing Poppy to grab it. Her eyes widened whenever she saw it, gently taking it from his paws. Branch watched as Poppy looked at the scrapbook.

“Branch. You made a scrapbook? For me?” Poppy asked. Why did she sound so upset though? This was supposed to make her happy.

“Yeah. It’s really lame. Just look at it, please? I worked super hard on it. I also think I permanently glued my fingers together,” Branch said, raising his hands. He wiggled his fingers that were stuck together. Poppy let out a chuckle, before opening the scrapbook. Her eyes examined every single page, her eyes watering. Her tail was wagging faster everytime she flipped a page.

“Oh, Branch. It’s perfect. I- I don’t know what to say,” Poppy said. Branch smiled a bit, before continuing again.

“I got you something else. I know how much you love to collect flowers. So, I made these,” Branch said, before pulling out his crocheted Mittensettias. Poppy’s eyes widened even more, her face completely shocked. Branch could feel his face heating up, he was very embarrassed. Poppy took the flowers out of his paws, gently holding them.

“I hope they’re good enough,” Branch said. Branch tried to ignore and tune out the crowd, but it was really hard. Most of the Pop trolls were cooing, even some of the Classical trolls were cooing as well. All of their friends were definitely teasing him, he could already imagine it.

Poppy turns to him, taking a deep breath. Branch was very nervous.

“So, I tried really hard to think of something super good. My idea didn’t really work out, kinda like yours. But anyway, it’s a really small gift. I hope it’s enough. If it’s not enough, I could always make you something else. Well, I don’t-” Poppy started to ramble, before she stopped herself. Her tail wrapped around her leg, handing out a small black box.

Branch grabbed the box, slowly opening. It was a slightly gray bracelet. There was a nice little bulb, decorated with vines that curled around the band. Branch was confused. Was this a hug time bracelet?

“Now, I know you already have one, but this one, it’s a bit different. I had to make it myself. Of course, my dad helped to make it though,” Poppy explained. Branch took the hug time bracelet out of the box, taking his old one off and putting it in the box. Branch put the bracelet on, and he was shocked. The color of the bracelet changed color once he put it on. It turned a grayish shade of pink. It was beautiful.

“Oh, Poppy. It’s so pretty. It’s perfect,” Branch smiled bashfully. Branch felt his chest tighten, he felt he could barely breathe. Suddenly, he heard the hug time bracelet go off.

*ding*

Branch looked at the bracelet to see the bulb a bright light pink. It kinda looked like Poppy’s colors. He looked to Poppy to tell her what an awesome gift it was when he noticed her bracelet. The band was the same grayish color, yet it had a blue tint to it. Though, the bulb was the color of Branch’s bluish-gray fur. Branch’s eyes widened, tail wagging. Did Poppy make them matching hug time bracelets?

“So, do you like it?” Poppy asked. Branch smiled, nodding.

“I love it, Poppy,” Branch said. His chest panged in hurt. Suddenly, it started to snow lightly. Poppy looked around, trying to find where the snow was coming from. Branch looked up and saw some of the clouds floating above.

“Hey guys! I brought some of my friends!” Cloud Guy exclaimed. Branch groaned, rolling his eyes. Wait, was the snow coming from the clouds?

“Wow! Hey, we don’t know where that’s coming from!” Branch shouted. He swore he saw a rock troll with a mountain of snow on his tongue. Poppy took his paw, making Branch look directly at her.

“Come on, it’s not that big of a deal. Let them have fun. That’s why it’s a party,” Poppy said. Branch guessed that was true. He noticed many of the children were already running, trying to make snow angels. Few adults were trying to start up a snowball fight. Branch sighed.

“Now c’mon, let’s go party!” Poppy exclaimed, running off. Branch yelped, being dragged with Poppy. Branch rolled his eyes, following Poppy to play whatever silly game she wanted.

<3

Branch thought he knew exhausted. He had thought he was exhausted at the beginning of the party. Now, he was beyond exhausted. Branch could probably fall down to the floor and sleep three days straight. Maybe even seven days straight

After the gift swap, all the trolls played games for HOURS. Even after that, many of the trolls continued to talk and hang out together. Even then, most of the trolls just danced or did some other dumb activity together. It was nearly two in the morning whenever everyone had left. Poppy said that the leaders were okay to stay and spend the night at Pop Village instead of traveling such a long distance at night. They agreed, thankful for the hospitality Poppy had offered.

“Oh my god! My feet hurt,” Poppy said. Branch nodded, agreeing. Branch continued to lead her away from the party. She would’ve stayed there all night if someone hadn’t told her to stop.

“Okay Poppy, we’re at your pod now,” Branch said. Poppy quickly walked into the pod, closing the door behind her.

Branch sighed, quickly walking away.

Branch needed to get back to the bunker immediately. He had been in pain the entire time after they exchanged gifts. His chest continued to sting and twist in hurt, and Branch knew that it was only a matter of time before he had one of his coughing fits.

Branch had gotten far enough into the woods, so he knelt down. He could feel the petals in his throat. Branch had started coughing, hitting his chest to get the petals out. The faster this was done, the sooner he could forget about all of this.

Well, that was easier said than done. Branch continued to cough, barely feeling the petals budge. Branch was panicking. His tail wrapped around his leg, and he tried to cough harder.

The petals were right there. They were almost out. So why won’t they budge?

Suddenly, Branch stops coughing. The petals just fell out as if Branch didn’t need to cough. Branch stares at the petals. He growls at them, before picking them up and rushing towards the bunker.

Branch was a little confused though. The petals never fell out easily. It was very hard for him to get them out of his throat. Maybe he had done something different than all the other times?

Branch opened the hatch to his bunker, slipping inside. Once he was on the lift, he flipped the switch. The elevator slowly made its descent towards the bottom of the bunker. Once it got to the bottom, Branch walked off. He walked into his workshop, collapsing on his chair. Grabbing a jar, he unscrewed the lid and dropped the petals in.

His collection of Mittensettia petals have been growing every week since he realized he had hanahaki.

Branch knew this was one of the nights where he would just stare at the petals, just thinking about anything and everything. He sighed knowing it was gonna be a rough night.

Notes:

Another chapter finished!
There were a few things I changed, such as Poppy's gift. I know the whole point was that she didn't know what to get the perfect person or whatever, but I really wanted her to give him a gift so...
Also, I definitely put a cakewalk in here because I was thinking of my elementary school when we used to do them.

I plan on the next chapter definitely being a Poppy POV (following chapter could be Poppy as well, I'm not sure). After that will definitely be Branch, leading to TBT!

If you enjoyed this chapter, leave a kudos and a comment! <3

Chapter 7

Notes:

HI! Another chapter before I have to go to my Championships tomorrow for Winter Guard. Yay!
Also, this is a Poppy POV. Do I like it? No, I absolutely do not. I just think I took the wrong approach.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the story! <3

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy had started to open her eyes. She was definitely very tired from the party. That was one of the biggest parties she’s ever hosted. That was also one of the longest as well.

Poppy always tries to make sure she’s the last to leave the party. She never leaves, especially if there’s people still partying. Poppy would never.

Although, maybe she should’ve left. Her bones ache and she’s sore all over the place. Poppy had been standing and walking all night. Not to mention all the sugar rushes she had. So, Poppy definitely just wanted to sleep in.

She dragged herself out of bed, trying to stay standing. Her head was all dizzy. Okay, I need to eat some food.

Poppy dragged herself carefully to the kitchen. She didn’t want to fall over and make the growing aches she had worse. Poppy took out some bread. She would just eat some toast to fill her up. That would be okay.

Once she set the bread into the toaster, she slowly sat on the floor. Poppy started to think about what she needed to do today.

First, she needed to make sure all the other leaders were okay and enjoyed their stay. Prince D would be staying to hang out with Cooper for a few more weeks. King Quicny and Queen Essence had left an hour or two right after the Gift Swap. Second, she definitely needed to make sure that they got home. Although she wanted them to stay, they each had their own kingdoms or villages to look after. She couldn’t keep them in Pop Village forever. Third, she needed to take down all the decorations. That was going to be a pain in her rear. Maybe Poppy could ask the fuzzlings or teaspoon trolls to help her out? Next, she’d have to make sure the village is okay. The normal queen duties she has. After all that, she could probably sleep before she has to do it tomorrow.

Poppy’s tail starts to wag, thumping against the floor. Sounds like a great plan. Her toast pops her, and she has to slowly get up from the floor. Poppy probably needs to take medicine for the growing ache in her head. She quickly eats her toast, before quickly getting ready.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy burst out her pod, taking in the village. Most of the trolls were still sound asleep. Sadly, she can’t do a large musical number today. Poppy uses her hair to grapple all the way down, landing safely. She continues to walk, walking straight towards the hotel pod. It’s a pretty big pod, able to house lots of trolls. This makes it easier for visiting trolls to stay in the village instead of camping outside in the forest.

Poppy walked inside the pod, swiftly walking towards the rooms where the other leaders had been staying. Poppy decided to give them a conjoined room together, so it was easier to find them. Her tail wrapped around her leg as she lifted her paw to knock on the door. Poppy heard shuffling before she saw Barb peeking through the door.

“Hey, Popsqueak. Guessing you’re checking up on us?” Barb asked. She still seemed pretty tired.

“Yeah. If all of you are awake, I could take you guys to the Caterbus to go home?” Poppy suggested. Barb looked into the room, before leaving the door. She probably went to make sure everyone was awake.

Delta had opened the doors wider, allowing for Poppy to see in the room.

‘Sorry, darlin’. Everyone’s probably still tuckered out from that party. Barb went to wake up Trollex,” Delta said. Poppy just stood there, thinking and staring off into space. Are they all tired because the party was boring? I was certain everyone had loved the party. Maybe I need to have more exciting games? More fireworks? Definitely more sweets and sugar.

Barb’s muddy purple paw waved in front of Poppy’s face. Poppy zoned back in, staring at all the leaders. Except for Trollex. He was half asleep.

“Hey, you okay, Popsqueak?” Barb asked.

“Yeah, I was just thinking. Let’s get you guys home!” Poppy said. She quickly grabbed Barb’s paw, leading them outside of the hotel pod. Poppy now needed to get to the Caterbus Stop. After that, she’d board the bus and make sure everyone got back to where they lived. The Caterbus Stop was a bit further away from the village. Hopefully, it wasn’t too long of a walk for the other leaders. Poppy also made sure to request the first Caterbus this morning, so they wouldn’t have to wait long for one.

Finally, a Caterbus slowly pulled up to the stop. It quickly opened its mouth, announcing for the passengers to get on the bus. The other leaders were shocked and a bit hesitant, but they climbed in after Poppy.

The Caterbus closed its mouth, slowly starting to walk again. Poppy had ordered for one of the smaller buses, so there wasn’t much room in the Caterbus.

“Where are we stopping first, Miss Poppy?” Trollzart asked.

“We’re going to be stopping at Volcano Rock City, then dropping Trollex off at Techno reef. Or as close as we can get,” Poppy explained.

“Then It’s gonna be Trollzart and then me last?” asked Delta. Poppy nodded, before taking out a notebook. She needed to focus on the activities that needed to be done as soon as she got home. Poppy couldn’t remember if she had passed by where the party had taken place. Maybe she should’ve done that first?

Poppy writes a quick note, reminding her to check out the plaza in Pop Village. She also needed to make sure the market was going to start back up again soon. Poppy tried thinking of anything else she needed to do, but she couldn’t think of anything else. Sighing, Poppy put the notebook back into her hair. She stared out of the window, trying to focus on something.

Poppy didn’t know what was wrong. She wasn’t paying attention. Her focus kept jumping from one thing to another. Was that normal? Poppy stared at her paws, mindlessly playing with her beans. Her tail slowly wrapped around her arm, as Poppy focused on her paws.

“Is she okay? She’s been zoning out a lot,” asked Delta. The other leaders nodded, sort of agreeing.

“Maybe she’s still tired?” Trollex suggested. Delta shrugged, continuing to watch as Poppy fidgeted.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

The Caterbus comes to a stop right outside of the Volcano Rock City. The Caterbus opened its mouth to signify that they were at a stop. Barb stood up, stretching.

“Well, I had tons of fun at your party, Popsqueak,” Barb said. She hopped out of the Caterbus, waving it off. Once it closed its mouth, it started up again.

Poppy stood there, wondering what she could do. She had a lot of extra energy, and she wanted to use some of it. Trollex was still waking up from earlier. Poppy also knew that Trollzart and Delta didn’t really sing songs to expel any energy.

Okay, so she had to figure something else out. That’s cool. Poppy started to pace in a circle, tail flicking behind her. What could she do that would use up her energy?

She feels her skin get prickly, her fur starting to stand on its ends. Poppy glances around and sees Delta staring at her. Poppy stops pacing and goes to sit down. Maybe that was a bit weird? No it couldn't be weird, Branch paced all the time. Maybe it was just a Pop Troll thing.

Poppy takes out her notebook, pretending to draw. She tries to avoid looking at them, but that prickly feeling was still there. Poppy needed the Caterbus to hurry, so she could do something to expel her energy. Her tail flicks about angrily.

She’ll be okay. Poppy just has to focus on something for a few more minutes.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Finally, the Caterbus opens its mouth once more, allowing for Trollzart to fly out of the bus. He thanks Poppy for the ride, but she can’t really hear him. She isn’t focusing on his voice. As soon as the Caterbus closes and takes off towards Pop Village, Poppy lets out a sigh.

Poppy begins to pace once more, feeling very energetic. She feels angry. At least she thinks she does. She hasn’t really felt angry before has she?

Poppy shakes her hands, trying to think of ways to get rid of her energy.

Suddenly, Poppy smiles. Scrapbooking! Why hadn’t she thought of that yet? She pulls out a book and her supplies, quickly opening up the scrapbook. Poppy decided to make a scrapbook about the Gift Swap party. So for future parties, it’ll allow her to make the other parties even better. Poppy starts scrapbooking, allowing her energy to flow out of her.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy walked off the Caterbus, a bit excited. She was back in Pop Village, all the trolls already greeting her as she passed by. She made a quick stop at the market. As Queen, she wanted to ensure that every one of the stalls were up and ready again. If someone needed help, Poppy was happy to help!

Unfortunately, everyone seemed to have already set up their things. So, Poppy couldn’t help anyone here. She could go see if the decorations were still up. Poppy would love to help with taking them down. Poppy had practically run to the plaza. It was going to be so fun to take down all these decorations and sing!

Poppy had gotten to the plaza, surprised to see Fuzzlings there. She noticed Fuzzbert, immediately walking towards him.

“Hey, Bertie. What are you guys doing?” Poppy asked. Fuzzbert spoke, answering her question. The way Fuzzlings spoke was very different from normal talking. It sounded like a bunch of noises mushed together. Unless, the troll allowed you to hear them. It was much easier to hear their voice through the sound.

Poppy tilted her head, “Wait, you guys already picked up everything? I didn’t know you guys were on clean-up duty?” Fuzzbert nodded, sticking out a thumbs up. The rest of the Fuzzlings were done, so they kinda all walked off.

Now, Poppy didn’t know what to do. All of the activities that she could’ve done to get rid of her extra energy were already done. She decided she could just walk around the village. Or maybe she could hang out with some of her friends?

Smidge was probably doing a workout right about now, Cooper was spending time with Darnell, and Guy Diamond had to take care of Tiny Diamond. Biggie probably went to the vet to give Mr. Dinkles, one of his weekly check-ups, Satin and Chenille were busy making dress ideas.

Oh! Poppy could ask Branch to hang out with her. They had hung out all night at the party, but she was sure that he wouldn’t mind. Also, he’d probably have something to do. Before she could go hang out with Branch, she needed to scrapbook some more.

Poppy needed to scrapbook future party ideas, scrapbook the first ever Troll Kingdom Gift Swap, and she also needed to scrapbook all the pictures she took with her friends.

Okay, now Poppy had something to do! Scrapbooking was one of her favorite things to do. Poppy needed to make sure these scrapbooks were perfect. She was so excited. Poppy just had to make sure she finished before she ran out of energy. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to hang out with Branch.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy put the scissors down, trying to let her hand relax. It was cramping like crazy!

Well, Poppy did speed run the planning scrapbook, before moving on to the friend scrapbook. She sighed, feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over her. Guess she couldn’t spend time with Branch today. Maybe tomorrow.

Poppy understood why he loved his bunker. It kept him safe for twenty years, and it’s pretty much his safe space. Yet, he didn’t need to be holed up in there for so long. Poppy hated it whenever he holed himself inside of his bunker.

She growled, tail thumping angrily on the ground. What was Branch working on down there? Didn’t he know that going outside was good for you?

Poppy understands that sometimes, she’s just too much for Branch. Branch needs a break sometimes, she knows that. Maybe Poppy just needs to ask him herself. Yeah, that seems like a good idea.

Poppy stood up, gently picking up her scrapbooks and her supplies. As she sat there longer, the wave of exhaustion got stronger and stronger. She yawned, her tail going to wrap around her leg. Making sure everything was finally picked up, she shuffled to her room. Wow, she was really tired.

Poppy stopped when she spotted another scrapbook on her desk. Branch’s scrapbook.

She walked up to it, opening it gently with her paws. Poppy smiled warmly, staring at Branch’s handiwork. Branch always said he hated scrapbooking, so she was really surprised whenever she received his gift.

Poppy sat down, continuing to look through it. She looked around her desk, finding the petals. Poppy grabbed one of the periwinkle petals, furrowing her brows.

She had no idea where they had come from. Poppy had just gotten to her pod, and she was about to get ready for bed. Her entire body had frozen, coughing suddenly. Poppy didn’t know what had happened, maybe she got cold from outside?

Yet, she had found these three periwinkle petals on the floor. Weird. Poppy didn’t owe any periwinkle flowers. Where did these come from? Poppy was still trying to figure it out, as she flipped it in her paws. Her eyes drooped, before she set her head on the desk.

Poppy shut her eyes, already dozing off into a deep sleep. No matter what, she was going to think of where those petals had come from. She had too.

Chapter Text

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

There was a light knocking sound. What was that? Poppy wasn’t sure where the knocking had come from. But it was there.

Suddenly, the knocking was much louder. Someone was banging on the door, trying to wake her up. Wait, the door? Was she still sleeping?

Poppy groaned, peeling her eyes open. Sugar! She fell asleep at her desk. Poppy growled lightly, already feeling the aches from sleeping at her desk. Poppy rubbed at her eyes, trying to get the sleepies out of her eyes. She stood up, raising her arms and stretching. Poppy tried to crack her back to get the ache out, but it didn’t really work.

She traveled to her door, opening it. On her porch was Smidge and DJ Suki, smiling really big. They seem to be excited about something.

“Poppy, come on! You have to hurry up,” DJ said. Poppy tilted her head. What was the excitement about?

“Yeah! You’ve got a letter from Bridget. It’s super pretty and glittery, I can’t wait for you to open it,” Smidge explained. Poppy gasped before rushing back to her house. She had to make sure she looked presentable. Being Queen was no easy feat, and she had to make sure she was representing the Pop Trolls at all times.

Poppy quickly fixed her dress and her hair. She gently placed her crown on her head, before skipping back to her door. The pod closed back up. DJ Suki and Smidge each grabbed one of her paws, before running off. The group giggled, continuing to run at full speed towards the Mail Pod.

Although, DJ had tripped, which sent Poppy and Smidge tumbling down as well. All the girls looked at each other, before busting out in laughter.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Once they had calmed down, Poppy and her friends walked inside of the Mail Pod. She walked up to the desk, asking for any recent mail she had received. The trolls nodded, immediately running to get her mail. Once Poppy received the mail, she quickly shuffled through them. Some of the letters were from her friends in the other kingdoms, while some were from the Pop Trolls. Poppy found Bridget’s letter, quickly opening it up. Her tail wagged as she started to read the letter.

Dear Poppy, my bestest best friend of all time forever

In regards to our last letter, I’ve been doing absolutely splendidly. I’ve had many dates with King Gristle, and ruling Bergen town with him is so much fun. Although, one of these dates was a bit different. I’m not going to get into ALL the details, but I know you’re going to be super excited.

So Gristle took me out, and he was getting all mushy and sweet. Which I don’t mind at all. Then, he gave me a bouquet. It was filled with all my favorite flowers and even some tulips, peonies, and so many other beautiful flowers. When I asked what they were for, he just said he wanted to give his queen some flowers.

Then it gets better. We went stargazing. As I was looking at the stars, Gristle was telling me how much he loved me and how much this night meant to him. I turned to ask what he meant, and he was on his knee. To be honest, I was a bit confused until Grissy opened the box up. Oh, Poppy. It was the most beautiful ring ever. I almost cried.

Grissy continued his speech and once he was finished, he asked me to marry him! I squealed and said yes! I mean obviously I said yes. So I wanted to ask you this very important question.

Our wedding will be a month from now. Would you like to be my maid of honor at my wedding? I know this is sudden, but you are my best friend in the entire world! Please it would mean so much.

Love, Bridget

Muses. Poppy was shocked. Did she read that correctly? Was Bridget really getting married? Never mind that, did she just ask Poppy to be her maid of honor? Not only was Poppy going to say, but it was a really big honor!

Poppy squealed quietly. Oh, she was so excited. Poppy started to walk off to wherever, her tail wagging as fast as it could. Oh I am going to be the BEST maid of honor.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy could not stop talking about the letter she received from Bridget. Right after she read it, she walked around the Village, humming a song to express how excited she was. She told Smidge and DJ Suki how stoked she was. Poppy had even sung a song about it! Her friends heard more of it during their feeling circle that afternoon.

Poppy had been vibrating since she read her letter. Who wouldn’t? Her best friend in the entire world had asked her to be her maid of honor at her wedding. So, Poppy immediately called for a Caterbus to take her to Bergen Town. She hasn’t been there for a while, so she was pretty excited about going back.

The Caterbus was quick to arrive at Bergen Town, and Poppy got off at her stop. As Poppy walked through Bergen Town, she smiled. It was a lot different than what it was like before. It used to be sad, dark, and gloomy. But now, they are adapting a lot better to being happy. Of course, there weren’t any bright rainbow colors plastered all over their buildings. Yet, Poppy could tell the Bergens were different beings from two years ago.

Any Bergen she knew, she happily waved towards them. Ever since the Bergens and Trolls started being friends, Poppy was able to make friends with some of them. It was nice being able to make a variety of friends. Poppy had the Bergens and all the other kinds of trolls from the other kingdoms.

Once Poppy made it to the stairs, she kindly asked a guard to take her to the top. The Bergen Guard lowered their hand, allowing Poppy to step on it. The guard made their way to the top of the stairs, gently lowering their hand to the ground again. Poppy jumped off, waving and thanking the guard.

She marched straight to the doors, sliding inside of the castle. The castle was a lot larger than any of the royal pods they had. It was even larger than the castle at Volcano Rock City. Poppy made her way to the throne room, seeing her best friend and her fiance redecorate the room. They were making minor changes, but Poppy could see why they decided to. Getting a larger, elegant chair fit for their new queen, making sure everything was nice and tidy, Poppy could see they were getting ready for their wedding. Poppy walked towards the couple, watching as they continued to change things.

“Oh! Grissy, the throne room looks lovely! Todd, how is the rest of the castle doing?” asked Bridget. Todd started to explain to Bridget how everything was going when he saw Poppy walking towards Bridget.

“Looks like you’ve got a guest, Mrs. Bridget,” Todd said, before walking off. Bridget tilted her head curiously, before turning around. As she looked down to the ground and spotted Poppy, she gasped. Bridget fell to the floor, getting as close to Poppy as possible. Poppy smiled, before squealing and hugging Bridget’s cheek.

“Poppy, what are you doing here?” Bridget asked, very confused. Poppy’s tail started to wag faster, as Poppy was filled with excitement.

“Well, I got your letter! I’m so excited for you Bridget! Of course, I would love to be your maid of honor! You’re like my best friend, you practically my sister Bridget,” Poppy said. Bridget smiled, tears springing to her eyes.

“Thank you Poppy. I knew I chose the right person as my maid of honor!” Bridget said. The girls started squealing and celebrating afterwards, while everyone else in the room felt very awkward.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy was extremely tired. Well, she wasn’t exactly tired. Was she bored? Poppy had spent the rest of the day with Bridget, just hanging out with her and talking about her wedding. They brainstormed decorations ideas, cake ideas, dress ideas, and a lot more ideas. Poppy loved it whenever she spent time with any of her friends. Her friends were very dear to her and she loved them so much.

“Hey, Poppy. How many of your friends know about my wedding?” asked Bridget. Poppy shrugged.

“I told all of my friends right after I read your letter. Smidge and DJ were right there, and during our feeling circle, I told them,” Poppy explained. Bridget nodded.

“Did you tell Branch? I’m sure he would love to come. I’m pretty sure Grissy and Branch are best friends,” Bridget suggested. Poppy thought about that. Branch? Of course, she told Branch-

Wait, did she tell Branch? Poppy thought about it for a bit before realizing. She never told Branch. She never told Branch?! That can’t be right, Poppy told Branch everything. She quickly stood up, walking towards the door.

“I must’ve forgotten to tell him. Branch has been pretty busy in his bunker. I’ll be back another day to hang out with you again Bridget!” Poppy quickly said. She ran as fast as she could out of the castle and across town, trying to get to the Caterbus Stop. Poppy really couldn’t believe she forgot to mention it to Branch.

Poppy immediately boarded the Caterbus, hoping to get back home to Pop Village in enough time. Hopefully, Branch didn’t already learn about Bridget’s wedding from someone else. Poppy looked at her wrist, staring at her hug time bracelet.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy jumped off the Caterbus, thanking the bus driver for their awesome job. She had tried to walk casually and as normal as possible to the bunker. Yet, it was really hard.

As soon as Poppy got into the forest, she booked it towards the bunker. She really needed to stop forgetting about things like this. She was finally able to see the bunker, so she slowed her run.

As she made it to the trapdoor, she knocked lightly. Poppy didn’t want to bang repeatedly on the door, especially if he was further down the bunker. Although, if he was all the way down there, Branch wouldn’t hear her. Poppy lightly pulled her hair. This was a very hard decision. She wanted to tell Branch about the wedding, but she didn't want to burst into his bunker and invade his space.

Poppy knocked louder and longer this time, only to be met with complete silence. She tried one more time, knocking a bit louder and longer. Nothing.

Poppy sighed, opening the trapdoor and climbing down into the elevator room. Poppy stands there a bit unsure.

“Branch? Could I come in?” Poppy asks. A shiver goes down her spine as she hears her voice echo back up to her. Her tail wraps around her leg, as Poppy stands there nervously. Suddenly, Poppy’s ears twitch at what she thinks is the elevator moving up. She bends down, looks for the elevator and sees Branch approaching.

Her tail unravels around her leg, the tail wagging faster as the elevator comes closer. The lift stops, with Branch just standing there awkwardly.

“So, I need to tell you something,” Poppy started. Branch eyes widened, very nervous at what Poppy was going to say. Poppy shook her head.

“Oh, Branch. It’s nothing bad,” Poppy said. Branch untensed at that, but he was still very very confused. Poppy kinda barged into his house, demanding him to talk to her. Was she being rude?

“Well, anyway, I got a letter from Bridget earlier! Her and Gristle are getting married!” Poppy exclaimed. Branch’s face was filled with surprise. Poppy noticed that his tail was slightly wagging. Of course it was, he was happy for them.

“Bridget asked me to be her maid of honor! Doesn’t that sound cool? Also, they invited all the trolls from Pop Village to come,” Poppy explained. Branch seemed very interested in what she had to say. Before he spoke, he lightly coughed into his hand.

“That sounds great, Poppy. I’d love to go to their wedding with you. How about you write a letter with all the important information on it?” Branch suggested. Poppy immediately nodded, quickly opening the trapdoor. She had a lot to do now. Poppy had to scrapbook a bunch of ideas for the wedding decorations and she needed to make Branch a letter telling him all the important things for the wedding.

Oh, she was so excited she could hardly wait. Poppy ran out, barely hearing Branch call after her. She felt a bit bad about running, but Poppy needed to work to make this wedding perfect for Bridget.

**✿❀ ⚘ ❀✿**

Poppy has been at her pod all night. Of course, she tended to her queenly duties, but she started her other activities soon after. Poppy began writing down dates and times to go to Satin and Chenille to make outfits for the wedding. She also began writing down times when she could speak to Sky Toronto about the decorations. Poppy had a lot of preparations to do in order to help Bridget. Man, she was pretty busy.

Poppy made a note to go to visit Dr. Moonbloom. For the entire day, her chest has been hurting. It’s nothing much, yet it’s a constant burning pain. Poppy thought she was dying for a split second, but it went away for some time. Although, her chest has been hurting for the entire time she’s been doing this. Does her chest hate it when she works?

Poppy was most definitely confused, but she hoped it would go away soon. She didn’t want the weird chest burn to affect her. It would suck if she couldn’t rule the Village, and it would suck double if she had to miss out on Bridget's wedding.

Poppy definitely needed to see a doctor about this. There was no way she was going to shrug this off.

Suddenly, Poppy yawned, her eyes drooping. Guess she was tired already. Poppy slowly got up from the floor, walking towards her bed. She flopped down, before cuddling further into the bed. Her bed was so warm. She yawned again, barely able to keep her eyes open.

When did she get so tired? Poppy was going to have to finish Branch’s letter later. She also needed to go back to Bergen town to speak with Bridget.

Her tail flicked slowly behind her. Yeah. That seemed like a good idea for tomorrow.

Chapter Text

Branch did not know what to do.

Branch obviously wanted to go to the wedding. He wanted to support Gristle and Bridget on their special day. Yet, he would have to spend the day with Poppy. Which wasn’t a bad thing, but Branch did not want to be coughing up petals at their wedding. Branch groans in frustration.

He pulls the lever, as the lift goes down. Branch was making adjustments to his bunker before Poppy told him about the wedding. Branch had also finished coughing out a lung. He really needed to figure out a way to stop it.

Well, Branch did know how to stop it. He just couldn’t do it. He was scared.

Branch continued walking through his bunker, tail wrapping around his leg. It’s still okay. Branch had time to figure everything out when he confessed to Poppy. Everything was going to go great, he just had to make sure everything was perfect.

Branch pulled out a blueprint and began writing his plans. His tail slowly unraveled around his leg, slowly wagging as he worked.

Branch was very exhausted, and he knew he’d be even more exhausted. He had gotten Poppy’s letter a few days ago.

Branch was a bit confused. Although, everything seemed easy enough. Right now, he had to buy some gifts for Gristle and Bridget. Atleast, that’s what Poppy’s letter said. Actually, Poppy’s letter said a lot of things. Branch just hoped she didn’t go overboard for the wedding. He’s seen how crazy she gets when trying to perfect a celebration of some sort.

Branch sighed, before walking into the market at the plaza. He glanced through the options he had, trying to figure out a gift to give Bridget. Branch stopped at a stall with different pieces of wood and flowers. Scrapbooking materials?

“Hey, excuse me. What is this for?” Branch asked. The troll running the stand smiled, lightly flapping their paws.

“It’s just a decoration stall. Well actually, it was a picture frame stall, but no one was buying any of the picture frames. So I decided to scrap that idea and just make it a decoration stall. You can buy whatever you want here to decorate a scrapbook or a sign or a picture frame,” the troll said. They were very talkative, and Branch smiled. He supposed he could make some picture frames for Bridget. Bridget loved photography, he’s sure she would love to put pictures all over the castle.

“How much is the decoration? I’m making it as a gift for my friend,” Branch explained. The troll gasped, before going into detail about every single one of the decorations. This troll was very passionate about their work. Branch understood very well.

After they talked about every decoration, they started suggesting which ones were best to use. Branch just stood still, listening to them rant about their decorations. It was pretty nice hearing what they had to say actually.

“So, what are you thinking of getting? There’s a lot of choices, but I hope you buy something!” said the vendor. Branch started gathering the decorations and materials he would need to create at least ten frames for Bridget. The vendor’s tail wagged faster as Branch grabbed each material.

Branch finally had everything he needed. He bought them, and waved bye towards the troll. Now, all Branch had to do was complete the frames. He thought of making another gift for the couple. Yet, he didn’t know how to do it yet. There was plenty of time to figure it out.

<3

Branch did not think it would take two weeks to make a few picture frames. Now the picture frames were a bit different. He made at least eight of them for pictures of just Bridget and Gristle. He made two other ones for pictures of her friends that she would want to hang up somewhere.

Branch had another idea for the couple, yet he wasn’t sure on how he could do it yet.

Branch wanted to decorate a pair of matching roller skates for Bridget and Gristle. So he traveled all the way to Bergen Town to ask for the pair’s skates. He would take them back to the bunker, decorate both of them to match each other, and give his gifts to Bridget and Gristle.

It seemed easy enough. Once Branch walked through the roller rink, he ran up to the counter. The bergen bent down to hear the troll.

“Hey. Do you happen to know what skates the king and queen wear?” Branch asked. The bergen seemed a bit confused though.

“I do. What for?” The bergen questioned. Branch looked around to see if they were there.

“I wanna make them a matching pair of skates as a gift. For their wedding,” Branch explained. The bergen gasped in surprise before smiling and nodding. They walked to the back of the store, probably grabbing Gristle and Bridget’s skates for him.

“Here you go!” The bergen gave him two boxes of skates. Branch took out a string, wrapping it around the boxes to secure them.

“No need to pay for it little troll,” they explained, smiling. Branch nodded, waving to the bergen and thanking them.

Now Branch needed to figure out how to get these skates back to his bunker. There was no way he could walk all the way back. The boxes were way too heavy, and it was a very far distance from Pop Village to Bergen Town. Branch knew the skate boxes wouldn’t fit on the Caterbusses. The boxes were huge. Branch guessed he could get a bergen to bring him there, yet he didn’t know if anyone would be willing to bring him all the way to Pop Village.

“Excuse me, sir. Is there a way you can deliver these to Pop Village? I’m too small to make the entire trip with the boxes…” Branch asked. The bergen understood his problem taking back the skate boxes.

“We can deliver these to Pop Village in about a day or two. Is that okay?” Asked the shopkeeper. Branch nodded, throwing a thumbs up.

Branch rushed out of the store, running back to the caterbus stop. Now, Branch had to make sure he had enough paint to actually customize their skates.

Branch can do this. Branch was going to make the best gifts for the both of them. He could do this.

<3

The skates had actually come in pretty fast. Branch had expected them to come in a bit late. Not like he was complaining or anything. It gave him tons of time to actually work on their present. He’d rather it be finished now then rushing to complete and messing it up.

Branch got to work immediately. He had pulled out all of the stickers, gems, and glitter so he could properly decorate their skates. Branch also worked and got as much paint for the skates as we could. It was very hard to collect all the dyes and squash them into a container to hold the paint. Branch pulled out his blueprints, and decided to start working on Gristle’s skates first.

His skates would definitely be green, that color represented Gristle the best. Branch knew he wanted to add some purple in there to represent Bridget.

Completing the design for the skates, Branch stepped back and stared at the design. He decided that he liked the idea and he definitely could pull it off. So, Branch got straight to work.

Branch made sure to take all the strings out, also separating the boot and the plate. He’d work on just the boot first, and he was going to reattach the strings and plate back to the boot.

He quickly applied a white coat over the boots. This would allow for the paint to show up better. Branch also made sure to sand the boot a bit. Sanding it allowed for the paint to stick a lot better. Once Branch was done with that, he pulled a bucket filled with an emerald green color up to the boot.

Branch got right to work on painting. It was a bit hard for him since he was so tiny and the boot was larger than he was. Yet, he took his brush and started at the top. Branch got to the bottom of the boot and let it take some time to dry. Branch added a second coat just to make sure the colors would show up well. Branch took the other bucket filled with a sage green color and painted the tongue of the boot. This was going to add a nice touch to the rest of the design. Branch also made sure to put a darker green onto the bottom of the shoe.

Once Branch had applied the first coat and let it dry, and applied another coat on the tongue of the boot and the bottom. He stepped back to observe his work and he liked it so far. Branch knew that Gristle hated glitter. Although, he still liked pretty shiny things.

Branch had to dig far into his bunker storage to even find these clear rhinestones and sequins. He started to place them along the back of the boot, going from the top to the bottom. Branch would squeeze out some glue onto the rhinestone and gently stick it on the boot. Once he was done with that, Branch added some more rhinestones near the shoelace holes. He added about five at the top of the boot, but all the other holes had two under them. Branch decided to glue some extra ones near the front of the boot.

Taking the shoelace, he threaded it through each hole. He occasionally added some beads through the holes. He even added some charms hanging from the shoelaces. The shoelaces were a nice lilac color which was a nod to Bridget.

Branch had dug out some extra ribbon, strings and yarn. He decided to embroider the small designs on the shoe. Luckily, all the items were a lighter lilac color. Branch placed the ribbons and strings in place and carefully embroidered them into the boot. Once he was done, it made a very nice design made of silky ribbons and fluffy yarn.

Branch took a step back, staring at his work so far. His tail starts wagging behind him. He was extremely proud of his work so far. Branch had done a fantastic job designing the boot of the skate, and was happy with how it came along. He applied a coat of protection over the boot. Branch rolled the plate over, freshening up the red wheels and adding little hearts on them. Once the plate was steady, Branch carefully placed the boot back on top of the plate. He secured it and finished with one of Gristle’s skates. Wait, he had only done one?

Branch whipped his head around to the other skates. He counted each of them and noticed three. It took nearly two days just to do one skate. Would he be done in time? No. Branch knew he could complete the skates. He was able to do one of them in basically two days. Since he finished with one of the pairs, it would be much easier for him. He just needed to recreate the first skate and start one Bridget’s right after.

Great. Of course whenever he has to do something, his stupid self goes and gets sick. Now, he didn’t do anything on purpose. He’s very careful.

Well, he might’ve walked through the rain to get to the market, only to realize that they were closed. Not only did he get sick from the storm, but his disease is also getting worse. Usually it’s just a few petals. Maybe six or seven.

Lately, there have been tons of petals. Branch nearly coughed up twenty at once. Branch knew this was bad. It meant that he was going to die. Well, he wasn’t going to die yet. Although, the hanahaki was slowly, but surely, getting to that point.

Branch tried to continue working, yet his fever and his disease only made it worse. Even if he feels like he is dying, Branch gets up and goes to his workshop. Before he fell ill, he was able to take off the boot of Gristle’s second skate and get it ready for the decorations.

Slowly, Branch glues each and every rhinestone where they need to go. He places them exactly where he placed them on the other boot. It takes him a while to finish but he eventually does. Taking the ribbon and yarn, he starts to slowly weave and embroider it into the boot. Branch makes the same design as last time, taking it slow to perfect it.

Once he’s done, he steps back to admire it. Branch feels his face stretch with a smile, as his tail slowly wags back and forth. Unfortunately, he is far too weak to lift the boot back onto the plate. It has to sit there until he has his strength back.

However, Branch can start on designing Bridget’s skate. He shoves Gristle’s skates into a corner, before dismantling Bridget’s.

Branch pulls out three buckets of paint, all varying colors. He digs around for green ribbons and yarn. Branch happens to find even more rhinestones somehow. Some of them are purple, while the others are smaller than the others he used. Branch decides that’s good enough before starting to work on Bridget’s boot.

As long as Branch didn’t pass out from any of his coughing fits, he should be good enough.

<3

Branch lays face-first in bed, groaning in discomfort. So maybe it was a bad idea to continue working while he had a very bad cold and his coughing fits were outrageous. Apparently, the worse his cold got, so did his coughing. Actually, Branch didn’t know if that was true.

Yet, Branch decided to take some medicine and see if the cold would go away after resting for a bit. He hoped that it would work, considering he still has to put together Gristle’s other skates and finish Bridget’s first one.

Branch grumbled, thinking of all the work he had to do. Why did he decide to decorate bergen skates as a wedding gift? He has no idea. He did it partly because it was the only thing he could think of. He also decided to make the skates because he knew the bergen couple would appreciate the gift.

Branch figures that his cold will go away in the next day or two. After that, he spends at least a week creating Bridge’s skates and making sure that the skates were perfect. Branch really wanted them to like his gift.

Branch slowly gets up, walking through the bunker. He stops in the kitchen to make some lunch. He makes sure it’s very healthy to help with getting rid of his cold.

While the food is cooking, Branch sits there and just thinks. He hasn’t had a moment to stop and process his thoughts. Well he has, but he hasn’t wanted to yet.

First, the hanahaki. Branch knows that the longer he waits, the worse it’ll get. He doesn’t want to live with the random coughing fits. Even right now, he feels his chest tighten and coil slightly, signaling that one could happen soon. Branch wants to be able to confess, he truly does. He just couldn’t.

Everytime he stared at Poppy, his mind went completely blank. The only thoughts passing through are about Poppy. He just adored being able to stare at her. Her little glittery freckles, her adorable overbite smile. Even when he was casually talking to her, his brain would lag behind.

Yet, when he tried to actually confess, his throat closed up on him. His vocal cords wouldn’t cooperate with him. His skin would prick all over, like pins and needles. Branch’s paws would get clammy and shaky. Branch was nervous, unable to say anything about his love for her. It always seemed to happen whenever the time was right.

Whenever it was just Poppy and Branch alone, Branch would get too anxious to get a word out. Once Poppy’s friends left her alone for a second, Branch would freeze with anxiety, before deciding against saying anything. Any situation he could’ve told her, he’d end up not being able to.

Branch ran a paw down his face, sighing. He seriously needed to tell her before his hanahaki got worse. Just imagining coughing up full flowers is scary to Branch. It was scary enough coughing up all these petals. He didn’t want to feel the pain of coughing up full blooms anytime soon.

Another thought entered his head. What happens if there’s another adventure? Branch can’t allow Poppy to go off by herself. She would end up hurting herself or something. Sure, she can survive pretty well, but it’s better to have someone to help you just in case.

What would Branch do if they had an adventure? Branch would still go obviously, he had to protect Poppy, but he would just have to hide his coughing fits from her. Like he has been.

A smoky smell hit his nose and he looked around. The food on the stove started to get a little burnt, so Branch hurried and turned off the fire. That would’ve been great if he burned down his bunker.

Branch supposes that he could eat this meal and just go back to sleep. Maybe tomorrow he’ll have his strength back to actually start working again. He picks up the plate, walking to his room. His chest twists and tightens, and Branch sighs. So his plan is to eat, cough up petals, and then sleep.

Branch wipes his forehead, staring back at Bridget’s skates. He had painted them a lavender color, with lilac on the tongue of the boot. He made sure to sprinkle in some glitter here and there. Branch also add tons more rhinestones. Bridget liked shiny and glittery things. There were some purple rhinestones added near the shoelace holes to add some more colors. Branch laced jade green shoelaces through the holes. He also added some beads and charms on the laces.

Using the jade green ribbons and yarn, he stitched the designs into her boot to complete the look. Her boots turned out perfect, exactly how he had planned for it to be. His tail was wagging faster now that he stared at his work.

Branch had completed the skates and he still had plenty of time before the day of the wedding. There was no reason for Branch to worry at all. He had everything figured out. It was fine.

*Knock knock*

Branch’s ears perk up, hearing the knocking on his bunker. He walks to his lift, stepping up onto it. He pushes the lever so that the lift can make its ascent up.

Once the lift stops, he steps off before opening the hatch leading outside. It’s around the afternoon right now. When the hatch opens, the sun slips through and blinds him. Maybe he’s been down here a bit longer than he should’ve been. Branch never really stepped outside since he went out to get the paint for the skates.

After getting used to the sun after a while, he squints his eyes and looks at his guest. Poppy stands there, smiling widely and waving. She seems super energetic, as if she hasn’t gotten any sleep.

“Poppy?” Branch asked. He noticed the slight eye bags under her eyes, how she bounced on her feet. Has she had caffeine again?

“So, I’ve been up the past few nights helping Bridget and Gristle with their wedding. Then, I realized. I didn’t even have a dress ready! So I asked Bridget what I could wear. Then she told me I could wear whatever as long as it’s not white or anything. I drew her a design and she liked it. So. Would you like to go with me to Satin and Chenille’s pod so I can get their help making me a dress for the wedding? If you haven’t gotten your outfit, you can ask them to make yours right then and there. How about it, Branch?” Poppy explained.

Branch kinda just stared at her dumbfounded. So Poppy was definitely high on caffeine, great. Not only that, but Poppy wanted him to tag along with her?

“I’m not so sure Poppy. Maybe-” Branch started before he was cut off.

“Ugh! You’ve been stuck down here forever! I bet you don’t even have an outfit yet! You need an outfit to go to the wedding. Plus, I know you’re probably working hard on their wedding gifts, but I’m sure you’ll finish it in time. Please, just this one time Branch?” Poppy asked, pleading with puppy dog eyes.

Branch groaned internally. He really did want to go with Poppy. Branch also needed to get his outfit for the wedding. Branch looks back at Poppy, her paw outstretched. Branch sighs, taking her paw. She giggles as she pulls him out of his bunker. The hatch slams down and locks itself. Poppy nearly jumped three feet into the air with how energetic she was. Branch smiled, tail slowly swishing behind him.

Poppy and Branch walked the entire way to the village, heading to Satin and Chenille’s pod. Branch remembered which one was their pod. They had a slightly larger pod. Not only because two trolls lived there, but Satin and Chenille also made all their outfits in their pod. The twins had asked for a bigger pod to be able to create their fashion designs and they got a larger pod.

Both trolls used their hair to grapple themselves all the way to their pod’s porch. Poppy excitedly knocked on their door, awaiting for the twins to answer. Once the door opened, Poppy bounded inside to hug both twins.

Satin and Chenille were both caught off guard from Poppy’s hug attack, falling straight to the ground.

“Oh my god! Satin! Chenille! It’s been forever since I saw you guys!” Poppy exclaimed. Branch just stood at the threshold of their door, watching the scene unfold.

“Poppy. You saw us like, I dunno, an hour ago?” Satin said. Branch figured that they must’ve recently seen each other.

“Branch? What are you doing here?” Chenille asked him.

“Oh. Poppy came to get me so we could get out outfits for Bridget and Gristle’s wedding,” Branch explained. Poppy stood up, helping her friends while nodding her head.

“Yep! I think now is better than never! Do you think you could help us?” Poppy asked. Satin and Chenille rolled their eyes.

“Of course, we’d love to help Poppy. Especially with outfits for something like a wedding!” Satin said. Chenille nodded her head, the twins going towards a desk in their pod. They beckon the two inside their pod. Branch crosses their threshold, the pod closing the flap. Once Branch walks up to the desk, he sees Poppy and the twins chattering about outfits.

Poppy has already pulled out her scrapbook pages of ideas for her dress. Satin was already breaking down all the ideas, while Satin was trying to find the best fabrics for the dress.

“So, you want a rainbow inspired dress? I got just the idea,” Satin exclaimed, quickly whipping out a pencil. She starts sketching her idea out on the paper. Poppy and Branch watch over her shoulder, very intrigued. Branch understood what it was like to hurry and sketch a brilliant idea you have.

“Oh em gee! It looks so good, Satin!” Poppy exclaims. It was a pretty normal dress at the top, but the bottom of the dress was fluffy like a cloud. It really did remind him of a rainbow.

Poppy started gushing about the dress, while Chenille found her some colors to use. Chenille figured they could use some nice greens, blues, purples, and pinks. The fabrics were soft and slightly glittery. Satin dug into a box and pulled out another fabric and some fluffy yarn. Branch was amazed. How did they already have all the materials to start making Poppy’s bridesmaid dress?

Chenille threw the materials in a box before turning to Branch.

“So, what about you? What kind of outfit do you want?” Chenille asked. Branch kinda froze. He wasn’t sure. Branch had spent the past days working and being sick. He never thought about his outfit yet. The only reason he was here was because Poppy asked him to go with her.

“You don’t have a single idea do you?” asked Satin. Branch’s ears drooped, his tail wrapping around his leg. Satin sighed before speaking again.

“Well, how about we keep your outfit?”Satin suggested. Branch raised his eyebrow, very intrigued. Chenille cocked her head to the side, very confused.

“We can make a new vest and new pants to go with the occasion. Make them glittery and change the colors around a bit. How about green pants? Oh! Some green and blue sequin things for the leaves on the vest! I just got the best idea,” Satin said. As she finished, she started sketching out another idea quickly.

Chenille thought about it, before nodding quickly. She peeked over her sister’s shoulder studying the design. Chenille quickly went and rummaged through a box for the fabrics and items that they needed for his outfit. Branch was surprised they had even thought of an idea like that for him.

The twins always went on about making him news clothes. That his poor pants were in need of retiring. Complaining about how his vest looked like it was falling apart. So he was pretty surprised when Satin suggested making an outfit that looked similar to the one he had now.

Poppy smiled and turned to Branch.

“Now we just add in our ideas and what we want. They take our measurements and sew everything together. Don’t worry, these outfits are going to look so good. I even have them helping me on the day of the wedding for Bridget’s dress,” Poppy ranted. She still seemed so full of energy. Branch supposes they could go hang out or something. Maybe burn all that energy she had pent up. He understands that she’s trying her hardest to be there for Bridget, ignoring her own needs to help her friends.

Branch turned to watch as Satin and Chenille started working on their outfits for the wedding. He was quite excited to see how they would turn out.

<3

Branch was pretty exhausted. Both him and Poppy had spent most of the afternoon at Satin and Chenille’s. Chenille had taken their measurements quickly, while Satin prepped and prepared fabrics for the outfits. Poppy suggested that they stay just in case.

Both Satin and Chenille had finished Poppy’s dress mostly. It had rainbow colors on the top, and the bottom was like a cloud. Branch had to admit it was a pretty dress. Satin and Chenille are good at this.

His outfit was really just his normal day to day outfit. Satin created a white shirt to put underneath his vest. Since his vest was glittery and had sequins, it was going to irritate his skin a bit. Branch was glad they decided to add that to his outfit.

Chenille quickly made the shorts and asked him if he liked them. The shorts were a glittery green color. Satin was still trying to sew the vest, figuring out where to put the sequins and glitter. Branch quickly looked at the pants to see if he liked them. It was a nice fabric on the inside, sewn with the glitter fabric on the outside of the pants.

Branch smiled, tail starting to swish behind him.

“I guess you approve of them huh?” Chenille asked, neatly folding the pants and putting them in a box. Branch nodded his head, watching as Chenille quickly joined her sister in getting his vest ready.

“Isn’t this so exciting? Oooh, I can’t wait!” Poppy said. Branch nodded slightly. He was excited. Even if he was sick and slowly dying, he’d still go to the wedding to support both of the bergens. No matter what.

“Yep. Super excited. Only a bit nervous though,” Branch admitted. Branch had never once participated in a wedding. Not only that, he had made gifts for the bride and groom. What if they didn’t like it?

Branch was also thinking about where the wedding will be. Of course it’ll be held in Bergen Town. That’s where the bergens lived. Branch was a bit nervous going back to the Troll Tree. Where he had lived.

Branch was only just a kid whenever everything went downhill. Yet, he could still remember everything well enough. At least, all the happy memories. He remembered when his brothers played with each other, or when they practiced for the band.

Unfortunately, Branch everything the night the band broke up.

-

This was the first time that Branch was ever performing. Oh he was so excited!

He had started joining their practices lately, and Branch always heard JD and Spruce talking about adding him into the band. They talked to Grandma about it too. Whenever they got all the brothers together and announced Branch would be joining, everyone was happy.

So why was he so scared? He had practiced and Branch was sure he knew all the moves. His stomach was flipping, and he felt the overwhelming need to pass, barf, and pee his pants. All at once too.

His ears perked up, as he heard one of his brothers approach. Branch turned, finding Floyd there. Floyd had calmed Branch down, telling him about “pre show jitters”. Branch didn’t think they were real, but Floyd’s advice had really helped him to calm down a lot.

Suddenly, everyone was near the curtain, ready to emerge onto the stage. Branch was bouncing on his toys. He pulled out his little blue tinted glasses.

The curtain opened up and all of the brothers came out at once. The crowd yelled at the tops of their lungs, shouting for the band. Did they really have that many fans?

Spruce was off to the side, probably talking to some fans. Clay was also off to the side as well, joking off with all the fans. Branch went to the front of the stage, looking over the sea of people. They start screaming and squealing at him. Branch didn’t really know what to do so he just waves and smiles. That only makes the fans squeal more.

Branch notices the music starting up, and he quickly walks over to his brothers. They start their intro, just like they’ve practiced. It wasn’t until later in the song when Branch felt warm.

He was singing just like normal. When suddenly, a large warmth overcame his body. There seemed to be a magical outline surrounding his body. What was it? Was it because of his singing? Branch noticed his brothers started having the same magic course around them as well.

“Yes! It’s working! Come on guys!” JD exclaimed. Floyd looked a bit confused as JD moved to the front of the stage. Branch was confused as well. This wasn’t their choreo. JD should know since he made it all.

“What’s he doing?! This isn’t my choreo!” Clay hissed. See! Even Clay knew that they weren’t supposed to do this. Yet, he saw Clay move forward towards John. Spruce immediately followed afterwards. Floyd was a bit hesitant, but he also moved towards the front of the stage. Branch followed his brothers.

They all started to stack on top of each other, trying to harmonize on a single note.

Suddenly, that magic started to get cold. Branch didn’t like the cold. It made his skin all prickly for no reason. The magic made his skin feel like pins and needles. The stack they had made also started to wobble a bit. Branch’s foot slipped from Clay’s paw, and they fell. Floyd spun and fell off the stage. What was he doing?

Branch slowly got up and dusted himself off, before realizing the spotlights were pointed at something. He looked up and noticed his brothers all tied in a knot above the stage. Were they supposed to do that? Did Branch mess up?

Everything else happened like a blur. The knot broke and the brothers fell. Once they got backstage, it was a yelling match right away.

JD blamed them for not following his lead. Branch was confused because they did follow his lead. Spruce also seemed to realize this and called him out on it.

“Oh, so it’s my fault? Is that what you’re saying? I just know he can hit the Perfect Family Harmony. We have too!” JD explained. Maybe that’s why he was mad? They didn’t get to do the Perfect Family Harmony.

“What if we don’t want to?” Spruce spat. Branch was confused again. Wasn’t that the whole reason for the band?

“Yeah, this used to be fun. Now it’s all about being perfect,” Clay rolled his eyes. Was Clay mad at JD?

Branch didn’t understand much of the conversation anymore. He was too confused. Floyd was trying to calm them down. He didn’t want a full blown screaming match.

“Y’know what? I’m done playing the heartthrob! My exquisitely chiseled rock-hard abs and I quit!”

“Me too. You can keep these. I’m more than just the fun one. I’m in a sad book club. Did ya know that? A sad book club! I’m gonna find trolls who take me seriously.”

What were Spruce and Clay talking about? Quitting? Finding trolls that take him seriously? JD took Clay seriously. He had bought Clay those books for him. Didn’t Clay remember that?

“Alright. That’s it, I’m done. I can’t- I’m going to go hike the Neverglade trails, alone. Yeah, that’s right. Bro-Bro going solo, YOLO. Goodbye forever,” JD said. JD left through the window with his grappling hook. Branch was upset. Why were his brothers talking about leaving? They needed to go back on stage. The band still had a few songs to perform.

“Wait- guys, please! C’mon,” Floyd shouted. Spruce and Clay walked out of their Grandma’s pod. Where were they going?

“You aren’t leaving right Floyd…” Branch asked. Floyd sighed, crouching down to his level.

“Not forever! I’m sorry, Baby Branch. I’ll be back, I promise. Right now, I have to follow my heart. And my heart is telling me that it’s time to start a solo career,” Floyd explained. Branch didn’t really believe him. If the others weren’t going to come back, why would Floyd?

“Then we can build our secret hideout?” Branch asked, pulling out his drawing. Floyd smiled, agreeing. He gave him his vest, and Floyd gave Branch one last hug. He grabbed a guitar on his way out of the pod, looking back for just a few seconds.

He never came back after that.

-

“Hey Branch! Check it out! Your new vest!” Satin and Chenille exclaimed. Branch jumped, immediately looking to the two twins. He stared in awe.

It looked exactly like the vest he wears every day. The leaves are a bright green or teal color, but it still looks the same. If he looks closer, he can see that there’s tiny sequins decorating the leaves. Branch can barely notice the glitter on the leaves. He smiles before grabbing the new vest in his paws.

The fabric has a very nice feeling. It wasn't going to itch or irritate his skin. His tail starts wagging as he gets happier staring at the vest.

“I love it. Thank you,” Branch says. Poppy smiles big, while Satin and Chenille are shocked. Branch can understand the shock. He used to be the grumpiest troll in the entire village. He was sometimes shocked by the things he would say as well.

“Well, you're welcome, Branch. You can always come to us if you need help with anything,” Satin said. Chenille kinda giggled at what she said. Branch just glared at the two of them. Branch hands them the vest, and the twins fold it to fit nicely into the box with the undershirt and pants. Once they tied the box with a bow, Branch grabbed it.

Once Poppy had her box, the twins escorted them out of their pod.

“We still need to work on all the other outfits for everyone else in the Snack Pack. Good day!” Chenille said, the pod flap closing once she walked away.

Branch turned to Poppy. He sighed before tapping her shoulder. She turned around to look at him. His tail slowly wrapped around his leg.

“Would you maybe wanna go hang out?” Branch asked. Poppy’s eyes widened, standing there frozen.

“Just- I’ve been cooped up in the bunker for so long, I thought maybe…” Branch tried to explain, yet he couldn’t get the words out.

“Of course Branch. I’d love to hang out with you! It’s been forever!” Poppy exclaimed, before tackling him into a hug. He fell to the ground with an oof. Oh, great. He was going to be doubly exhausted.

Branch opened his eyes, feeling groggy. Branch groaned, trying to pull the covers over his head. He did not want to wake up at all. Last night, Poppy had dragged him around town to hang out with her. Not only that, but Branch coughed up two handfuls of petals once he got home. He had tried so hard to hold it in. Branch almost started coughing right in front of Poppy.

Despite him almost revealing he has hanahaki, Branch actually did enjoy spending the afternoon with Poppy. His chest tightens, creating a small and slow itch. Branch sits up, slowly getting out of bed. His robe is pulled on and sloppily tied in the front. Branch walks over to the calendar to see what day it was.

Bridget and Gristle’s Wedding Day

Oh, Bridget and Gristle had their wedding today. Branch walked out of his room, going to start the rest of his day. He started up his coffee, cooking a small breakfast. Branch took note of the things he was going to need to buy. He needed a few more spices and ingredients to make food. Branch also needed some more coffee beans. He was running out.

He reached for his mug, taking a sip. Branch smiled watching the food. He sipped his coffee again before he choked on the drink. Wait, what did it say on the calendar?

Branch set down his mug, running back to his room. He quickly checked the calendar and saw the same thing as when he first checked.

Bridget and Gristle’s Wedding Day

It was their wedding day? Already? Branch rubbed his eyes with his paws, staring back at the calendar. He guesses he has to get ready sooner than he thought.

Branch walked back out to the kitchen, his outfit in hand. He was going to change after eating. He turned the stove off, quickly eating his meal. Once he finished his coffee, he set the dishes in his dishwasher before setting off to his bathroom.

There, he changed into his outfit. He wasn’t going to lie, it looked pretty neat on him. Branch opened a drawer, pulling out a purple glitter bow-tie. He put it on with his outfit and smiled. The bow-tie really helped finish off the entire look. Maybe he should get a few more for different occasions?

Branch went back into his room to pick up his box when he remembered something else he made for today. He had made a tiny lapel to go with his outfits, but Branch wasn’t sure if he was going to wear it. He pulled out the lapel and it was a Mittensettia one. Obviously, it was crocheted so Poppy wouldn’t be sneezing all over him. The only fabric he had was a dark red color, so Branch wasn’t sure if it was appropriate for a wedding. He shrugged, pinning the Mittensettia lapel to his vest. Branch ran back to the bathroom to look at the entire outfit. Branch really liked it. The lapel pulled it together.

His tail started wagging as he walked through the bunker. Once he gets to the lift, he hops on, pushing the lever. As he gets closer, he can hear someone knocking on his door. Is it Poppy?

Branch opened the hatch. Poppy was staring right back at him, giggling to herself.

“Well, someone’s excited, aren’t they?” Branch teased. Poppy rolled her eyes, extending her paw to Branch. Branch took it, allowing Poppy to help him out of the bunker. Branch closed the hatch, making sure it was locked.

They both walked together, back to the village. Every single troll in the village was up, buzzing with energy. Was everyone going to the wedding today? The trolls probably wanted to help out the bergens with decorating.

“Okay, listen up everyone! It’s almost time to go to Bergen Town! Are you ready!?” Poppy announced. All the trolls squealed and screamed, all of them very excited to see the wedding.

Once all the decorations and flowers were packed, everyone headed to the Caterbusses. Every troll was very excited to head to Bergen Town for the wedding. It’s apparently been a long time since a troll wedding. The trolls were also excited to help participate in a bergen wedding for the very first time.

Once they boarded the buses, Branch sat in a seat by himself. On the way, his chest itched and burned. Branch really needed to confess after this. He had everything planned out. Branch was just begging that it went right, and nothing interrupted the wedding.

It seemed that the entire Pop Village had gotten there earlier than expected. The bergens informed them that the couple were still sleeping, and the trolls were free to hang around Bergen Town for a while.

Branch immediately started walking. He knew where he was going the second he got here. It’s been a while since he’s lived there, so he could have totally forgotten where his grandma’s pod was. Once Branch was in front of the troll tree, he grappled onto a branch.

Branch looked around and found her pod. He walked right up to it, gently opening up the flap. The flap was a bit stiff, not being used in twenty years. Branch walked right in, looking around. Everything was nearly the same. He had picked up a picture to look at. It had a pretty nice coating of dust on it, but Branch could still see what it was. It was a picture of their family.

John Dory and Rosiepuff were both standing, and Spruce and Clay were each on a side. Floyd was sitting in the front, holding him. Branch’s ears drooped, his eyes stinging. Branch really missed his family. He gently placed the picture back down, continuing to walk through the pod.

Branch wanted to cry. He hadn’t been here in forever, and he hated all the memories that came flooding back. Like the one time they all played together on the rug in the living room. That had made a pretty big mess. Or all the times he would sit and watch his brothers read or draw. He enjoyed being able to be with his brother. He remembered all the times John Dory would cook all of their favorite meals.

Branch stops in front of Rosiepuff’s room. He hesitates, before opening the door. His tail wraps around his leg, nervous as he walks into the room. It looks the same as it always had. Sure, everything was broken and messed up, but it was still the same room. He walked over to her music player, wondering if it still worked. He lifts the arm onto the record, allowing it to play.

The music starts to play as he picks up the closest album cover he sees. He flips it over to see BroZone. Branch sighs, hearing the music play. It’s nice to hear it, but it's a bad memory for him. He zones out, listening to the music and forgetting about the outside world.

In the back of his mind, he hears the door to his grandma's room being open. He stares down at the album cover, listening to the song playing.

“Um, Branch? Whatcha you doing?” says someone. Branch jumps, quickly pulling the arm over the record. He turns around to find Poppy. Branch smiles, yet it hurts his face.

“Are you okay? You look like you’re smiling and crying at the same time?” Poppy asks. Branch brings his hands to his burning cheeks.

“Yeah, it does kinda hurt,” Branch said, turning around to pick up the record. He felt Poppy looking at him, wanting to know why he was so upset. That was when she saw the album cover.

“Wait a minute. Is that a BroZone album?” Poppy asked, snatching it from his hands. Branch freaked out, watching as she looked at the album.

“God! I love BroZone!” Poppy exclaimed. Branch froze.

Really! I-I mean, really?” Branch said. He tried not to sound too excited whenever Poppy claimed she loved the band. Who was her favorite?

“I didn’t know you listened to them?” Poppy said, throwing the album cover. Branch quickly grabbed it out of the air, holding it tight to his chest.

“I don't. I’m hate-listening. It’s a new thing. She had very questionable taste, I mean look at this place. Some things just shouldn’t be macramed. Right?” Branch said, feeling a bit guilty for saying that about his grandma.

“Is there something you aren’t telling me?” Poppy asked. Branch placed the album cover gently against the nightstand. There was a lot that he never even tried to tell her yet. It was just a lot for him to reveal.

“You know if it’s something that's bothering, you can tell me, right?” Poppy said, taking one of his paws inside her hand. Branch’s heart was beating so fast, his entire body tensing up immediately. He took a deep breath.

“Oh, would you look at that?” Branch said, trying to avoid talking about feelings. He glanced at his wrist as if there was a watch on it.

“We’re gonna be late to the royal wedding, let's get married,” Branch said, rushing his words. He felt a sharp tug on his arm. Branch turned around to see Poppy standing there, face all bright pink.

“You just said ‘Let’s go get married’ Branch,” Poppy said, very slowly. Now it was Branch’s turn to turn bright purple. He had said that?

“It was just an accident. What I meant was ‘Let’s go get Bridget and Gristle married!” branch said, laughing nervously. Poppy shifted awkwardly on her feet, before laughing along too.

“Yeah, come on. Let’s just forget about that and get to that wedding!” Poppy said. She grabbed his hand and the pod door opened, revealing two little bugs. The pair jumped onto the bugs, flying out of the Troll Tree.

Branch looked around and saw the trolls and bergens starting to sing. Guess this was the morning song? Branch decided to help with a few decorations, singing along with Poppy. His chest tightened and burned as he sang along. However, Branch found a way to escape from a coughing fit. Branch went with Peppy and the funk twins to help Gristle get ready.

After that, he went back outside to make sure all the decorations were secure. Branch found the bench where all of the Snack Pack was standing. Now, he just had to wait for Poppy and Bridget to show up. Poppy had gone to help Bridget with her wedding dress. Branch overheard Satin and Chenille talk about how wonderful the idea was.

His ears perked up, listening as the music and song got more intense. The bergens took out umbrellas and trolls jumped on top of them. The umbrellas shot up the trolls and they held flowers up. Branch actually really liked the idea of the trolls acting as floating flowers. It really pulled the whole look together.

Once Bridget landed, everyone applauded and sat down on their benches. Branch could see Poppy on top of Bridget’s dress. Her dress was made of balloons. That was weird. It didn’t look very comfortable.

“Now go get him, before I do!” Branch heard Poppy shout. He snorted and his chest burned at what she had said. Poppy had a sharp needle in her hand, bringing it down onto her balloon dress. It popped and glitter shot out of it in all decorations.

Branch rubbed his eyes staring at Bridget. She was in a white wedding jumpsuit. Branch could also see that she was wearing skates. The skates from their first date.

“Isn’t it beautiful, Branch? Do you think I did a good job?” Poppy asked. Branch smiled, nodding. She really had done a beautiful job. The wedding was going great and Branch was happy for the couple as well.

Bridget stepped onto the platform with Gristle. Everyone listened to the officiant talk about their love life. Branch looked at Poppy.

She was so happy for her best friend. Poppy was the whole reason that they were getting married in the first place. Had it not been for her forcing Bridget on a date with Gristle to try and rescue Creek, Bridget would’ve never been able to confess her love. Branch inched closer to Poppy and his chest flared in pain.

It was alright. Everything was fine. Their tails slowly intertwined each other’s legs. Branch’s stomach did flips. His hands started to get sweaty and warm. Branch could live with a humongous coughing fit later. As long as he got to spend the day with Poppy. Nothing could go wrong. Not a single thing.

Branch turned his attention back to the wedding.

“STOP THE WEDDING!!!!”

Notes:

YAY! We're about to get into Band Together! I'm super excited to start writing the next chapter, I just gotta figure out what to do lol.
Anyway, I was off of school for spring break (I was lazing around all day). Then, at the end of my spring break, I had to take a trip with my marching band to Florida! So I missed a whole week of school because I was in Disney! (Our band went to march down Main Street in Magic Kingdom)
All that aside, I've been working to make sure this chapter is super long! To make up for how long I've been gone lol.

I hope you enjoyed! Please leave a kudos and a comment if you did!

Chapter 10: NEWS

Chapter Text

Hello.

As of right now, I've decided to put this story on hiatus.

Unfortunately, I've lost interest in writing this story. Maybe in the future I'll continue it or maybe even rewrite.

I do have more story ideas, and I plan on writing even more stories. (Possibly other fandoms stories as well?)

So this story will be on hiatus and be pushed back as I focus on school and other things lol. Hopefully I'll have another story (maybe) sometime soon?

Anyways bye, I hope you guys all have a fabulous day/night.
