Summary
Steve leaves. He does what he's always dreamed of doing, he runs in the night. He steals his father's old BMW and says goodbye to their farm in Alabama forever, says goodbye to his heavy-handed father and all the horrible memories that haunt him. He's broke, terrified, and utterly alone.
Eddie leaves. He does not run in the night, he doesn't have to. Eddie the loser, Eddie the orphan, Eddie, bound to end up just like his parents. When Eddie's uncle dies a few months prior, he leaves everything he has to Eddie. Eddie's always had a bleak future. Despite this, his uncle believed in him. His uncle taught Eddie he doesn't have to end up like his parents. In August of 2002, after everything is sold, he leaves Tallahassee and is determined to find himself.
Steve's plan sours after crossing the Texas border. When his car goes up in flames, he's forced to start walking. He doesn't get far before a blue pickup truck stops. Steve is greeted with long, wild curls and a smile that never dims. Steve's never met anyone like Eddie. Eddie envelops Steve into his quest, and the pair head west together.
