Wan Shie looked at her newborn daughter, at her tuft of inky black curls and her large, golden eyes—eyes so much like that man’s—and wept.
There would be no peace for her, not with a golden-eyed child, not with a princess in her arms. She had wished and prayed and bargained with the gods to spare her child this burden, but her prayers went unanswered. Her little girl stared at her with eyes big and gold and inhuman. Dragon eyes.
Wan Yuxin grew up with golden eyes that painted a target on her back.

She grew up with danger as her lullaby and blood splatter on pale cheeks as her mother cut down the assassins sent to take her life.
