Chapter 1: Prologue
Chapter Text
Beneath the moon's cold, silken shroud,
A cursed man roams the shadowed wood,
Where ancient whispers beckon like a siren's call.
A sorcerer's ire, a grievous toll,
Transforms their frames into fur and claws.
Moonlit beams caress his feral gaze
As the howl of a lone wolf echoes through the maze.
In fur and fang, he finds his kin,
Bound by the curse that lies within.
Beside him soars a hawk, a creature of the sky,
A woman once, now in feathers, she does fly.
Wings of grace, with eyes agleam,
A creature of the heavens in a cursed dream.
Two spirits intertwined in moonlit dance,
Their destinies sealed in a fateful trance.
A man turned Wolf, a woman turned Hawk,
Cursed to wander, in shadows they stalk.
In the night's embrace, their souls entwined,
A curse of transformation, forever bound.
The eclipse unfolds in the dance of shadows,
A cosmic ballet where destiny molds.
The celestial alignment, a rare occurrence ordained,
Holds the key to breaking the enchantment's chain.
In the convergence of darkness and light,
The curse dissolved in celestial might;
Beneath the eclipse, they find respite.
Fashav woke up with the first rays of sunlight that bathed the ruins of Las Vegas. Another day started, and with it, a fresh wave of fear and dread washed over him. He looked around and took comfort in seeing his love perched on a nearby rock. She was safe. He intended to keep it that way. The Oseram living nearby were not renowned for their archery skills, and the few Tenakth rebels further away seemed to be focused on their own lives, racing with their machines and not paying mind to him.
He was sure their leader, a strange man who wore a mask constantly, was aware of his presence in the ruins. The masked man, however, had not attempted to approach him yet. Good. Luckily, Aloy had given him a focus before all hell broke loose, and he was grateful that they could exchange text messages and communicate that way. He took his focus from its hiding place in the ruin, placed it on this temple, eagerly opening her latest message. The bright white letters against the blue screen calling to him like a siren's song:
My love,
I miss you. More and more each day, but I do not despair as I know we will be reunited one day. I long for that day.
Defeating each Eclipse soldier to break the curse is too big of a task for us in our current predicament. We should target their leader and that will be sufficient to dismantle their operation in the eyes of the ancient magic that turned us this way. I am designing a weapon, a type of bomb I could carry and drop on the target somehow. It might sound silly, but I am willing to try anything to regain our lives as they were before.
Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas to refine this plan.
Be safe.
Your LadyHawke.
His heart ached that they had to hide their names even in such messages. But if it somehow ended in the wrong hands, they would be found and killed. Their enemies had too much at stake to give up easily.
Fashav reread it, finding no fault in her plan. He wondered how she could fly close enough to drop a bomb without being spotted and shot on sight.
He sighed, his hands combing through his hair. Today, he needed to buy provisions, an activity that always brought the risk of being recognized. But there was no way to avoid it - They needed to eat and have enough materials to survive until they found a solution to break the curse. He would have to be quick and keep it to the bare essentials.
He would also continue to study the Old one's information with his focus to see if anything useful could be found to break the curse without Aloy risking herself like that.
The sound of footsteps startled both himself and Aloy. He looked at her, and she stomped her feet in alarm, flying to the top of the ruin for a better view.
"Keeeee-arrrr! Keeeee-arrrr!! She called in distress as the footsteps' sounds grew louder and louder. They had been discovered.
“Go, Aloy, fly away to the top of the ruin and hide. I will handle this."
Fashav drew his knife and hid it behind his back as the footsteps grew closer. The tall, masked form of the Rebel camp leader filled the space, and his familiar voice rang loud and clear.
"Well, well, General. We thought you were dead".
Fashav would recognize that voice anywhere. The bloodiest assassin of the army of the Sun.
"The feeling is mutual; I thought you had perished at Cinnebar sands. What do you want?" Fashav asked. "I have not disturbed your camp, and I do not intend to. I'd appreciate the same courtesy applied to me."
Nil narrowed his eyes at him. "I would happily leave you alone, General Fashav, but I heard you say Aloy's name just now. She disappeared at the same time as you did, and I find it hard to believe she would do that by choice. I know that Carja hates Nora. If you harmed her in any way, I will avenge her. She is my partner."
Fashav snorted.
Before he could reply, a red-feathered hawk gracefully flew inside the ruin, landing on Fashav's shoulder. Her green eyes looked straight into Nil's steel-grey ones, leaving little room for doubt.
Nil removed the mask, dropping it carelessly on the floor, his silver eyes wide as a full moon, shocked.
"Wait. What is this? Is this? Is she? Aloy?" Nil took a step forward. The Hawk flew from Fashav's shoulder to Nil's shoulder and bit his earlobe softly.
"She told me about you.” Fashav said. “That you killed bandits together and that she considers you a friend. That's why we are hiding here, of all places. It was her idea".
Nil kept looking mesmerised into the Hawks eyes. “Ouch!”
Aloy bit harder on his ear when he tried to touch her feathers. Fashav chuckled.
"General, you better start at the beginning. What happened?"
Fashav sighed and glanced at Aloy. It was her story as much as it was his. Aloy nodded her feathered head once in agreement. "It's a long story, but it all began...."
Chapter 2: Temple of the Sun
Summary:
Flashback: Aloy returns to Meridian after defeating Nemesis and makes a shocking discovery.
Chapter Text
Aloy closed her eyes and sniffed the air, soaking in the tantalising food scents around her. The market was as busy as she remembered, with delicious local dishes in the small fires around the many cooking stalls. She was back in Meridian, and while she would never feel entirely comfortable in crowds, she now relished the knowledge that all these people around her, living their lives, no longer had a reason to live in fear. Their King was good and just, GAIA was up and running, and Nemesis was defeated.
She smiled, opened her eyes, and continued strolling leisurely through the market stalls. This time, her visit had two purposes: to sell the latest machine parts she gathered and to visit Fashav's tomb to finally pay her respects. Her pouches were heavy, so she went to her favorite merchant to take care of the machine parts first. She wanted to be free of the weight, and extra shards were always welcome for upgrades and repairs.
"Saviour, it's an honor to see you again. Come to trade?" The Machine resources merchant greeted her cheerfully.
"Hi Natirah. I have a bellowback heart and its lenses if you're interested. I could also use your help to get some directions. I need to go somewhere but don't know where exactly in Meridian it is." Aloy explained, putting the parts on the table for the merchant's inspection.
"By the Sun Saviour, this is an excellent specimen of a bellowback heart, fully intact! I'm happy to take these from you. Here." The merchant paid her the due amount of shards and turned around to stow the machine parts.
"Thank you. Where do I need to go to pay my respects to General Fashav? Is there a Royal burial place or memorial I can go to?"
"Certainly, Saviour, Such a terrible loss! There's a memorial plaque in his honor in the Temple of the Sun. There wasn't much left to bury, we were told. You could ask the Sun-King, may the Sunlight his steps, if he would allow you to visit it."
Aloy frowned, confused. Indeed, Fashav had a severe injury, but she saw his body being placed in the cart to be sent to Meridian. Lawan told her Fashav was supposed to receive official rites and an honored burial. Strange.
"Thank you for your help. I will be on my way then."
Aloy started the walk towards the Palace of the Sun, a heavy feeling in her gut. Something was not right here. Hopefully, it was a misunderstanding.
Aloy unceremoniously climbed the steps toward Avad's pagoda. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, and it made sense that Avad would want to be outside instead of trapped inside the Palace's walls. The guards were used to seeing her come and go freely and didn't try to stop her. Avad smiled broadly when he noticed her.
"Aloy! It is good to see you. You look well. What do we owe the honor of your visit?"
"Hi Avad. Thank you. I actually came to visit General Fashav's memorial and pay my respects. I meant to do it earlier, but there was never a good time. But now I want to see it, if that's okay with you." Aloy said, observing Avad's expression to see if any hints of tension could give her reason for concern.
"Of course, Aloy. May I accompany you? The memorial is in the Temple of the Sun; I can walk with you if you don't mind my company. And the company of the escorts, that is. It will feel good to stretch my legs." Avad smiled but waited patiently for her reply before standing up. He gave her a choice, after all.
"Sure. Would you mind explaining to me on the way about the Carja customs when it comes to lost loved ones, for both Royals and citizens, please," Aloy asked, with genuine curiosity in her voice. She was sure that whatever happened to Fashav's body, it was not Avad's doing.
"I'll be happy to. This way." Avad stood up and signaled his personal guards to follow them to the Temple of the Sun. He then asked a third guard stationed on the way to advise Marad where he was going with Aloy. They might be living in times of peace, but certain precautions were always applicable.
"Thank you, Avad. Is there a cemetery or burial ground here in Meridian?"
"Yes and no." Avad smiled. "Sundom citizens usually are burned in a ceremonial pyre. Nobles usually keep a space within their house dedicated to urns and memorials for their lost loved ones."
Aloy nodded. "That makes sense."
As Avad and Aloy walked towards the Temple of the Sun, she couldn't help but wonder if there was an ulterior motive for the pyres: why waste precious ground on cemeteries to accommodate the poor when they could be used for even bigger mansions for the nobles?. With effort, she kept her thoughts to herself. It was not a good moment to antagonize Meridian's customs. She needed Avad to keep talking.
They passed through the gates until Avad stopped and pointed.
"This is it, Fashav's memorial plaque," Avad explained, gesturing towards the shiny piece before them. "The Sun priests thought that it should overlook the Spire, our holiest place, to ensure his soul would be forever under the Sun's graces, considering how much Tenakth influence he was under in the last years of his life. May he rest in peace."
Aloy examined the golden plaque before her. It was placed on a column, facing the alight and the Spire. It was just a plaque. Not a tomb or shelf for an urn, nothing. It was disconcerting. She read the text in front of her:
Dedicated to the indomitable spirit and unwavering courage of General Fashav of the Carja, who valiantly lost his life in service to his people and nation.
We commemorate his profound legacy and enduring sacrifice with profound gratitude and solemn reverence. May his noble deeds and unwavering commitment to safeguarding peace and prosperity serve as an everlasting beacon of inspiration for generations to come. May he rest in peace under the brilliance of the Sun.
Aloy read it two more times with growing unease.
"I must admit this is not what I expected. What of Fashav's body? Is he buried somewhere, or are his ashes stored behind this plaque?" Aloy asked Avad, trying to stay calm and not to sound too judgemental. But the man she met at the Embassy deserved much better.
"It is a long journey from Barren Light to Meridian by cart, Aloy. The guards handed over Fashav's remains to the Sun Priests, who applied the last rites and prayers required to members of the Royal Family and then cremated him. Traditionally, members of the Luminescent line are buried in the sacred cave. But the Sun Priests thought keeping his ashes within the Sun Temple was best. That ensures the blessed Sun would recognize him as Carja, not as the Tenakth half he marked on his body. I didn't see it myself, but I was told about his Tenakth tattoos." Avad explained, turning his face away from Aloy so she wouldn't see his eyes tearing up. He missed his cousin.
Aloy gazed at Avad's dejected expression, not knowing what to say. That the Carja thought Fashav needed extra measures to be 'blessed' was outrageous. Holding her tongue as best she could, she took a deep breath and asked Avad: 'I want to see the urn with his ashes. I have met Fashav, and I don't think I can get proper closure by looking at a plaque."
"My apologies, Aloy, but that is not possible. The urn is kept in the rooms above by the balcony, and it's a space only accessible by the Sun Priests. I assure you, the Sun Priests have chosen that course of action in his best interest. But if you like, you can come to have dinner with me, and I will tell you stories about Fashav. We will honor him by keeping his memory alive. What do you say?"
Aloy sighed and looked around her. Life went on, citizens went about their duties, and the noises that reached them even inside the Temple were proof of that. She hadn't expected to feel the loss of Fashav so intensely. Still, standing here, looking at this stupid plaque with no decorations or flowers, nothing at all but a square with some text, made her sad and angry for the man who wanted to fight for a just future for all the tribes.
"It's okay, Avad; thank you for your time. I will return to Olin's apartment and rest if you don't mind. But I will return later here with flowers to decorate Fashav's plaque." Aloy said, not a question, but a matter-of-fact statement.
"I understand. May you walk in the light, Aloy. You are always welcome here. "
It was past midnight when Aloy sneaked back into the Temple of the Sun. She got Avad's permission to return; she just hadn't specified what time she would be returning. At least, that would be her excuse if she got caught.
As far as she knew, the Sun Priest's quarters were further away, and no activities occurred in the Temple without the Sun. Seeing nobody around in her Focus, she grappled to the open balcony atop the Temple and put herself up, hoping the doors weren't locked. She didn't want to make unnecessary noise to get in.
Another pulse from her Focus confirmed the room past the balcony was empty. Perfect. She moved forward, observing the space. It looked like an actively used space: a desk, pencils, books, a jug. No cupboards or shelves that could store an urn. She continued towards the next door, using the Focus light to guide her steps.
There were more rooms to the right and left of her. She decided to go to the right first, testing the doorknob. It was open. It was a strange room with no windows connecting to another door on the opposite side. She scanned with her Focus and stopped, startled. Someone was asleep in the next room. Judging by the shape, it was a tall, muscled male figure. Her heart beat faster.
It couldn't be.
She decided to risk it and go look closer. The door was also open, and she quietly approached the figure. The room was almost bare except for the bed and a bedside table. As her thoughts raced, distracting her, the previously asleep figure jumped with a familiar-looking knife in hand pointed at her. The man in front of her was wearing silk trousers and nothing else. Aloy looked fascinated at his arms and chest. He had impressive tattoos covering the left side of his body.
Impossible.
They stared at each other, recognition making both pairs of eyes go wide.
"Fashav?!"

Chapter Text
Time stood still while they stared at each other dumbly.
Aloy couldn't form a coherent thought; she wanted to scream, laugh, ask a million questions, tell him how there was finally peace in the Sundom, everything and anything at the same time. Unable to choose where to start, she acted instinctually instead: Aloy closed the distance between them, jumping on Fashav's tall frame and hugging him fiercely. He was tall, but she needed to look him in the eyes and touch him to ensure she wasn't hallucinating.
Fashav stepped back, stiffening, but soon enough, she could feel him hug her back. Aloy was about to start talking, but he abruptly covered her mouth with his hand and set her back on her feet.
He whispered as low as he could. "It's not safe. I think they can hear us; they wear the same object as you on their temples."
Aloy nodded silently and tapped her Focus. She scanned the room thoroughly, but nothing came up.
"Fashav, it's okay. My Focus shows there are no devices hidden in this room. It is safe." She tentatively got closer and took his hand in hers. "I can't believe this. I can see you touch you, but I still can't believe it." Her eyes shone with emotion, and it was all it took for him to pick her up and resume their hug, laughing and twirling her around.
They held each other for a long time, but Aloy felt like only seconds had passed. She didn't want to let go, but she had to know what happened.
Aloy disentangled herself from his arms and asked: "Fashav, what happened to you? Why are you confined here? Who did this?"
Fashav sighed. "When I woke up, two Sun Priests tended to my injuries. I think they drugged my meals or water because I kept falling asleep and waking up in strange patterns even after I was stronger. They told me the Sundom was still in danger, that they needed me to get reacquainted with Carja customs to be purified of the evil Tenakth influences I had suffered. They said that once they were sure I was again blessed by the Sun, they would need my help to defend the Sundom from Avad's cruelty."
"What?! Fashav, I assure you, Avad is a good King. They lied to you," Aloy exclaimed, appalled.
Fashav nodded in agreement. "I suspected as much. Sun Priests are proud and vain; they were coming to me themselves instead of sending trusted servants or their Eclipse agents, which likely means that they have none . They wouldn't lower themselves otherwise. If Avad was truly cruel, they’d had no difficulty recruiting followers. They are most likely rogue, isolated elements trying one last desperate attempt to reclaim power".
"That makes sense." Aloy considered what he said and found no fault with the reasoning.
"We have to get out of here. I can call my Sunwing to take us away to my Base. It is a safe place to rest and think about how to proceed. If we go to Avad right now, we will lose the element of surprise, and we might never catch these Sun Priests. Have you seen their faces? Can you identify them?"
"No, unfortunately. They wore hooded cloaks. But they not only introduced themselves as Sun Priests, their manner of speaking and what they said fit the part. And I think I recognized their voices; I just can't place them yet. But hold on, did you say my Sunwing ? Fashav exclaimed, eyes wide as he tried to process the information. “By the rays of the Sun, you ride a Sunwing?" Fashav's jaw went slack with amazement.
Aloy laughed softly. "Yes. The people of Meridian are used to seeing me come and go riding machines, even my Sunwing. And it's still the middle of the night, so it won't attract more attention than usual. I can call it to the balcony, and we fly straight up and away; people won't be able to see that two people are flying."
"Okay." Fashav agreed with some trepidation in his voice.
"Here, you should have this." Aloy reached for his knife on her back and returned it to him. "You will feel better having a weapon on you." She smirked.
Fashav smiled, looking at the familiar blue and white paint on the hilt, its weight comforting on his palm. "Thank you. Those are not the circumstances I imagined you returning me this, but I am glad to have it nonetheless."
Aloy gestured towards the balcony. "Let's go then. It shouldn't take long to get there."
Aloy called her Sunwing, taking one moment longer than necessary to observe the awe in Fashav's eyes as the machine gracefully landed. Aloy petted the Sunwing's neck, hoping the gesture would help Fashav to trust that there was nothing to fear from her flying machine.
"Sit behind me and support your feet on the side pegs," Aloy said, mounting the docile Sunwing. Fashav observed how she did it and carefully mounted it like she had instructed. However, a new issue seemed to widen his eyes with worry: he was awkwardly searching for the best position to settle his arms.
Aloy reached behind her, pulling his hands forward until his arms encircled her waist. "I suggest holding on tight!" She steered the Sunwing on a smooth take-off through the night sky. She was worried about how best to deal with Fashav's captors, and yet she couldn't help but be happy with the warmth of Fashav's embrace; he held her tighter and tighter as they gained altitude. Aloy grinned.
The Base was empty, as her friends were back with their tribes, having a well-earned rest. It was for the best; the more people learned about Fashav now, the bigger the risk of the news spreading too quickly and causing premature retaliation.
Aloy showed Fashav the main room, the kitchen area, and the showers.
"I know you must be anxious to learn everything that happened during your absence-"
"At ease, Aloy." He interrupted her, raising the palm of his hand in a halt motion. "I can see you are exhausted; you can tell me everything tomorrow."
Aloy smiled and nodded, relieved. She was exhausted . "If you want to use the shower room and change, I can find some clothes from Erend or Kotallo for you to wear to sleep in."
"Thank you, I appreciate it. Who is Erend?" Fashav asked in confusion.
"He is the Vanguard captain, Avad's personal guard. He is Oseram and a good friend. I gave him a focus, Kotallo, too. I will give you one as well."
Fashav slightly bowed his head in thanks and left for the showers. While he was gone, Aloy sent a message to Erend. Thankfully, he was back in Meridian, resuming his Vanguard duties. He was the only person of Aloy's circle in Meridian who possessed a Focus. She had also offered a Focus to Marad and Avad, but they explained they couldn't accept it; it would cause too much controversy with nobles and Sun-Priests alike.
Since It was the middle of the night, Aloy opted to send a text message instead of calling:
Erend,
I just returned from Meridian, where I learned that two Sun Priests still have ties with the Eclipse and are plotting to regain power. They have a Focus. I can't tell you how I've learned this yet, but I need you to inform Marad. Ask him to send spies to Sunfall and to keep a close eye on the Sun Priests. I'll be in touch again soon.
Satisfied she had done what was necessary, she turned to the sound of approaching footsteps. Fashav, who had just left the shower, walked into the main room nude.
Aloy's face flushed pink. "Here, I got a sleeping robe for you."
She handed the robe to Fashav and tried very hard not to stare. His bronze skin and lean body were engraved in her mind. He might be a bit leaner after months of convalescence, but he was still beautiful.
"I'm sorry. My time with the Tenakth made me too comfortable with nudity. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable". Fashav explained.
Aloy blushed harder. "It's fine."
Fashav dressed and approached her with a slight frown on his face.
"What's wrong? You don't need to worry; I have sent a Focus message to my friend Erend. He and Marad will investigate; you can relax". Aloy explained, hoping he would be able to get some sleep.
"Thank you, Aloy. That is good. It's just that…" Fashav hesitated. Aloy wanted him to speak freely to her, to trust her. She went to him and took his hand. "What is it? Tell me, please."
Fashav lowered his head, a pale pink coloring his cheeks. "I'm not ready to be alone yet. Would it inconvenience you if I slept in the same chamber as you? I am sorry, I am not usually this clingy, but I don't want to forget that I'm free again. And that you are here with me". He lifted his eyes back to her, vulnerability shining through the depths of amber.
Instead of replying, Aloy simply took his hand and pulled him towards her room. She silently gestured towards the bed, signalling for him to lie down. "I'll be right back; I'll just clean up and change." Fashav nodded gratefully and lay down on the soft bed.
When Aloy returned a few minutes later, she lit the small Utaru lamp on her desk to ensure Fashav could see his surroundings clearly should he wake up confused.
The comfortable silence remained as she lay beside him and settled with her head on his shoulder. Fashav sighed contently and fell almost immediately asleep, Aloy following a few moments later. They had things to sort out tomorrow, but for now, they could rest.

Chapter 4: Bonding under looming shadows
Summary:
Aloy and Fashav explore their feelings, but a disturbing message prompts them into action.
Chapter Text
Aloy stood in the kitchen, quietly drinking the leaf infusion beverage Zo had taught her. The past few days had been blissful and worrisome in the same proportion.
Fashav was excellent company; they talked, ate, snuggled, and slept in each other's arms every night. She had given Fashav a focus and introduced him to GAIA as they waited to hear back from Erend. It was strange that He hadn't called back yet to say he got it and would work on it, something he always did after receiving messages.
She took another sip of the hot drink when footsteps indicated Fashav was coming downstairs. GAIA had created a Holo for him, summarising the events that took place since the Embassy, and he would watch them up there in the dome with GAIA. He told Aloy he preferred to ask questions to GAIA to get used to the technology and to spare her relieving the complex events again for him. It still amazed Aloy how thoughtful he was and how quickly she fell for him. Hard.
She looked at his approaching figure. Why was he so damn handsome, on top of everything else. It was distracting; she was starting to wish he was less polite and would just kiss her. She knew he wanted to; she might be a virgin, but she could feel the bulge in his pants as they spooned every night to sleep. Knowing him better now, he was probably waiting for her to be more explicit about it, but it was so damn hard.
All these thoughts swirled through her head as he stopped beside her in the kitchen.
"I have finished watching the images up to the day you have found me. I am sorry you went through all of that." Fashav said, bowing his head respectfully. "But you are amazing, Aloy. The rumors of your deeds that reached us during our travels did not do you justice. Although I would have preferred that you didn't have to risk your life as often as you did. You have almost drowned at one point."
Aloy nodded. "I know it's a lot. I hope GAIA included some of the good parts too, like Kotallo wearing his metal arm and our victory celebration when Nemesis was defeated".
"She did," Fashav confirmed, a small smile on his lips. "She also showed me you have found my journals. That surprised me."
Aloy blushed. "They were beautiful, Fashav. Reading them and how you handled those things made me fight even harder. I thought of you often after I found each of them and how happy you would have been with everything we accomplished. I guess that's one of the reasons it felt so special finding you again". Aloy looked down, embarrassed that she was being too bold. But it was now or never.
Fashav raised his hand, gently touching her chin and lifting her face towards him.
"You thought they were beautiful? Thank you. I am no poet, but I've always enjoyed writing".
His thumb started softly stroking her cheek, and she almost lost her train of thought.
"At the time, there was so much going on that I didn't have a chance to consider exactly what I felt. I mourned your death deeply, but I couldn't dwell on it. However, part of me always knew that if you were alive, I would have met you again and enjoyed it. A lot".
Aloy held her hand against his warm palm, still affectionately stroking her face.
"We still have much to do, and it could be dangerous. But I don't want to regret not telling you this: I think I'm in love with you. These past few days have been the best of my life."
Aloy dared to look into his eyes again; he was smiling, too many emotions flashing through his beautiful eyes to name them all. But she didn't have to.
"My Sunlight. You saved me from the shadows and gave me a place to rest and knowledge to learn. You opened your arms and held me while sleep couldn't take me." Aloy felt her heart swelling with affection as she listened.
"I don't have much to offer you now," Fashav continued, conviction strong in every word.
"But whatever I have, all I am, it's yours. How could I not have fallen for you, too, my Sunlight? I am yours. Are you mine?"
After all that was said, Fashav already knew the answer, but she appreciated him asking, giving her a way out. But she didn't want one.
Aloy closed the remaining distance between them, put her arms around his neck, and lifted herself up, locking her legs around his waist. Her lips were a breath away from his as she whispered, "Yes."
Aloy observed in fascination as the beautiful smile that lit his eyes with happiness morphed into lust. She kissed him deeply, hoping he would catch on to what her body and heart needed from him. She felt his body move as he took hurried steps somewhere. She hoped it was to their room. As they briefly stopped kissing to come up for air, she looked around and wasn't disappointed; Fashav laid her gently on the bed, his warm lips and hands mapping each inch of her. Aloy closed her eyes, intensifying each sensation. She was where she wanted to be, hopefully, for a long time.
Aloy was feeling restless. Erend had yet to reply. It was tempting to ignore and continue the cozy, happy routine she and Fashav had developed the past few days. They woke up in each other's arms and made love, marveling at the discovery of physical pleasure.
She couldn't get enough of his body, hands, and everything he could do to her; she didn't want to lose it, but it wouldn't be real as long as the sun-priest threat was unresolved.
Fashav was working out in Kotallo and Erend's exercise room. He wanted to regain the strength he lost during his convalescence, and he had made some progress, though it would take time to fully recover.
Aloy got up from the couch in the main room to go outside, hoping the fresh air of the mountain would bring some inspiration on the best course of action. She was on her third loop back and forth through the outside entrance when her Focus pinged:
Aloy,
You were right; we found suspicious activity in the Temple of the Sun. Come meet me on the balcony upstairs of the Temple, and I will fill you in. Come here directly; I haven't told Avad yet; it is best we talk first and then brief him together.
Erend.
Aloy frowned. A written message from Erend? He usually called. That didn't sound like Erend at all; it was all formality and no levity.
"GAIA?"
"Yes, Aloy."
"I just got a message from Erend. Can you confirm if it was sent out from his Focus? I have reason to believe it didn't."
"Certainly. The data shows it was indeed sent from the device given to Erend. The device's current location is Meridian, although it is impossible to pinpoint exactly where in Meridian. I will monitor it and report to you if any unusual data or travel pattern is tracked by his Focus. The possibility that Erend is in danger is upsetting."
"Thanks, GAIA, I'm sure he is fine. But I will go check, just in case."
Aloy hurried inside, a heavy feeling in her gut screaming danger. With effort, she ignored the fact that Fashav was naked from the waist up, sweat making his body glisten under the fluorescent lights.
"Aloy? What's wrong?" He said, dropping the weight he was lifting, concern written all over his face.
Fashav immediately noticed something was wrong. Of course, he did; his observation skills were part of what made him a great General and a great Marshal.
"I have received a message from Erend. He wants us, well, me, to meet him in Meridian."
Fashav frowned, confused. "You were waiting for his reply. What is it about this that makes you concerned? I see you are tense." Fashav said, using his thumb to trace the worry lines on her forehead.
Aloy sighed. "I don't think the message came from Erend. He doesn't like to write; he always calls. And the wording is strange. I think it's a trap, Fashav. You said the sun-Priest also had a Focus. It's the only explanation I can think of."
Fashav put her arms around her, but she wormed herself out of his embrace. "You are sweaty! Stay away." she giggled. "It hasn't bothered you before." he deadpanned, making her laugh.
"True. Give us an excuse to shower together before we go." Aloy sighed and relaxed into him.
"So you want to go then? Even doubting the origins of the message?" Fashav asked.
"Yes. However, we should go straight to Avad and tell him what happened to you. Ask him to summon Erend so we can ask him. Tell them about the meeting location, so at the very least, we can have some backup if needed. It would be foolish not to." She turned her head towards his chest and placed a soft kiss there. "I just found you, found this. I want to make sure we don't take unnecessary risks."
Fashav kissed her head and nodded. "I agree with your plan. It is time. In truth, I look forward to seeing my cousin again."
"You will. But before we do that, I want you to take me to our room and make love to me again. Then we can take that shower and leave for Meridian on the Sunwing. Unless you want to depart right away?" Aloy asked, enjoying the amused look on Fashav's face.
"Hmmm, let me think." He lowered his head and kissed her lips. "I think making you scream again is a mandatory step in this trip's preparations?" He murmured against her lips, holding her close so she could feel his erection tenting his pants.
"Preparation is good, yes." She agreed with mock solemnity as he picked her up and carried her, bridal style, toward their room.
A few hours later, they were showered, fed, and packed for the trip to Meridian.
"GAIA, are you there?"
"Yes, Aloy?"
"Fashav and I are going to Meridian. I don't know what awaits us there. If you are still waiting to hear from me or Fashav within the next 24 hours, please message the others in our Focus Network and advise them. Tell them about Fashav and about our destination. Just in case we need the assistance."
"Certainly, Aloy. I wish you both a safe journey."
Fashav took her hand and kissed her palm. "Are you ready?"
"As ready as I'll ever be. I love you." Aloy said while lifting his hand to her lips for a soft kiss.
"My Sunlight. I love you too."
"Let's go. The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can return."
They walked hand in hand towards the perch where the Sunwing awaited them.
"May the Sun bless our mission. Let's go!"
Chapter 5: Meridian
Summary:
Aloy and Fashav arrive in Meridian and devise a plan with their allies.
Chapter Text
Aloy landed the Sunwing on the Palace of the Sun, as close as possible to Avad's pagoda. Although she didn't believe in a Sun God, she couldn't help but notice that it was scorching today, as if each Sun ray was celebrating the return of one of the Radiant line.
It was a while past the midday meal time; she hoped Avad was at his pagoda rather than inside the Palace.
They hadn't bothered disguising Fashav with a cloak or anything else; it was time to make known to all that he was alive. If everyone knew Fashav was alive and inside the walls of the Palace, the Sun Priest's plans, whatever they were, would halt. Aloy was also counting on their superstitions; attempting something against the Saviour of Meridian and the only remaining heir of the Radiant line surely was against the wishes of their Holy Sun god and the Sun-king.
They dismounted, and Fashav reached out for her, his intent clear: he wanted to walk hand-in-hand with her, making clear to anyone that they were together as they walked briskly towards the throne.
"Is that…the General?" She could hear the first set of guards on their path speaking in surprise. They continued towards Avad, who was sitting on his outside throne.
"Avad!" Aloy shouted. "I come bearing gifts!" She said, using the exact words he had once told her a long time ago.
Avad turned towards the commotion, eyes wide in recognition.
"Fashav! Merciful Sun, am I seeing things?" Avad gaped at his approaching cousin's tall form. Aloy noticed Avad's eyes went from perplexed to emotional to happy in a mere second. "My cousin!"
The two men hugged, and Aloy had to wipe a stray tear that leaked from her eye.
It was surreal. It seemed like yesterday, Avad was telling her about the Tenakth and Fashav when she was preparing to embark on her journey to the West. Avad had adamantly reassured her that Fashav was not an aggressive, mindless military like the rest of Jiran's followers.
And now here they were, wrapped in a tight embrace nobody ever thought was possible.
Unwilling to interrupt their reunion so soon with the bad news, Aloy approached the nearest guard and ordered:
"Please summon Marad and Erend. It is urgent. Once they are here, please ensure the rest of the city guard and the Vanguardsmen know that General Fashav is alive."
"Yes, Saviour, right away." The guard quickly wiped the confused bewilderment of his expression, saluted Aloy, and left.
That done, Aloy made her way back to the two cousins. Avad was beaming with happiness.
"It is nothing short of a miracle of the Sun. Words can't convey how happy I am to see you, Fashav. What happened to you? You must tell me everything." Avad said, his eyes shining with barely contained joy.
Noticing Aloy was watching them, Fashav extended his arm to her, inviting her into his arms.
"Come here, My Sunlight."
Avad's eyes went impossibly wider when Aloy took the proffered hand and hugged Fashav's side.
"Cousin, your Saviour is also my Saviour . She rescued me from my captors. And now, besides the Holy sun, I also worship my Sunlight." Fashav said, raising her hand to his lips and kissing it tenderly.
Surprised, Avad exclaimed: "By the Sun! Back from the dead and this? You truly are blessed beyond measure, cousin. I am happy for you."
Avad was still gaping at their joined hands when Aloy dared look at him to gauge how he was handling it all.
In truth, Aloy had wondered if Avad still expected their friendship to develop into something more after his awkward flirting from the past. That he was standing tall without fainting at the sight of a living Fashav was already a good start. The rest she could handle.
There was no point in delaying the bad news, though, so she went straight to the point.
"Avad, we need your help—yours and Marad's. Indeed, Fashav is now back to you, to us, but the danger still lingers. We have reason to believe that two or more of your Sun priests are still conspiring against you. To that end, they have held Fashav captive in the Sun temple since the Embassy incident. We are here to investigate and hopefully end the threat for good."
Aloy squeezed Fashav's hand in silent support. It couldn't be easy for him to be back here after being held captive in his own city.
Avad raised his eyebrows in shock. "A threat from Sun priests? That is unheard of. We shouldn't discuss this in the open, though. Let's go inside to my office. I'll have Marad summoned to join us."
"We asked the guards to summon Erend and Marad on our way here. We believe Erend might have information we can use." Aloy explained.
"I am sorry, cousin, I wish we didn't have such dire news, but we must act swiftly." Fashav lamented. "The quicker we handle this, the quicker we can celebrate." He smiled.
Avad put his hands on Fashav's shoulder. "Yes, we need to have a celebration worthy of the return of a Carja Prince. Come, let's attend to this matter immediately. This is all very unsettling." Avad motioned to the path leading to the private entrance he used as a shortcut to his office.
In easier times, Aloy would have appreciated the sights around her, the neatly trimmed gardens and ornate furniture spread around the patio with the golden doors leading to the Sun King's office. But now, all she could think about was the danger ahead.
Even Marad, who was always so stoically in control of his emotions with his ever-present poker face, was stunned at the sight of Fashav. Aloy would have laughed if it wasn't all so tragic.
Marad had almost regained control of his facial expression when Fashav explained everything that had happened in the previous months. Aloy and Fashav shared a worried look; the Spymaster without the faintest idea that all that scheming was going on under his nose was concerning.
"Aloy, I have grown accustomed to the extraordinary type of news you usually bring us, but this! This is blasphemous, to put it mildly. Sun Priests dared to do that? I must admit that I fail to find the words to appropriately translate how distressed I am." Marad shook his head in disbelief.
The door to the office flew open as Erend ran inside, his face red from the sprint.
"By the forge, it's really true! The guards are all saying that General Fashav is alive and is here, but I thought it was some kind of dark Carjan prank or something, haha!"
Aloy noticed how Erend's expression went from joy to confusion as he took in the mood of the group around him.
"But wait, why does everybody look upset? Shouldn't you be celebrating?" Erend asked, trying to understand what was going on.
Aloy wanted to soothe Erend's spiraling confusion, but there was no time.
"Erend, it's good that you are here. Fashav, I believe you haven't met Erend Vanguardman before, but he is a trusted friend and loyal to Avad. We can speak freely with him."
Fashav nodded. "Very well."
Aloy approached Erend, trying to find a way to question him without offending one of her best friends. "Erend, did you send me a written focus message yesterday? Whatever we decide here today will depend on your answer."
"Written message?!" Erend's eyes went wide as Carjan tea cup saucers.
"C'mon, Aloy, I hate glyphs. I call you every time I need to tell you something. Of course, I didn't send anything. Wait a damn second, you received a message with my name? Pretending to be me?" Erend almost shouted.
Avad and Marad observed the exchange in silence. Fashav and Aloy looked at each other; their worst fears had just been confirmed. It really had been a trap.
Aloy closed her eyes and took a breath to steady herself.
"I did. Unfortunately, the Eclipse is still active. Eclipse Sun-Priests, to make it even worse. They have focuses; one most likely scanned yours when you weren't looking. Do you remember seeing anything suspicious?"
"Nah, I don't remember seeing anything like that," Erend said, a concentrated frown on his face as he looked toward the Temple. "I mean, I pass by the Temple of the Sun sometimes during patrols or on the way to places, but nothing really stood out as suspicious. My guys also didn't report anything like that," Erend completed. "So what do we do now, then? We can't just wait around for them to attack. My Hammer and the Vanguard will fight with you, goes without saying."
"Thanks, Erend. I appreciate it." Aloy shot him a small smile and turned to the group.
"I will reply to the message. I'll say Fashav and I are on our way to the Temple. They probably know we stopped here first, so we should expect them to jump to whatever offensive tactics they devised."
Aloy turned to Avad, as she would need his buy-in to implement the second part of her plan.
"Avad, I can scan the place before Fashav and enter the Temple to assess their numbers, but still, I would feel better if we had a witness. Your people will have a hard time accepting this kind of treason. Erend is well-liked, but he is Oseram. Maybe Marad could be on standby outside the temple to witness their arrest?"
Avad looked at Marad, who nodded in agreement before speaking.
"Of course, Aloy, we will do anything to help. Erend, I would feel better if Vanguardsmen stood by each of the exits of the Temple of the Sun to prevent enemy reinforcements from getting in or one of them from escaping impune. Can you arrange that?
"Sure thing!" Erend agreed. "That is smart. Can't let any scoundrels get away without feeling a taste of my hammer". Erend lifted his hammer proudly.
"Okay, let's do this then." Aloy tapped her focus to activate it and typed a reply to the message."
Fashav and I are in Meridian. We will be in the temple within the next hour.
"It's done. The sooner we go there, the less time the Eclipse will have to set up something. Erend, go gather your men; tell them to be armed discreetly. We will all need to be careful not to alert them how much backup we have. They will likely suspect Erend will be coming with us, so I'd suggest you come in through the main entrance with Fashav and myself, and hopefully, they will think that's all the defenses we have planned.” Aloy said.
"Gotcha. See you in a few then." Erend said and walked away to make his preparations.
Aloy approached Marad.
"Thank you for your help. I will make sure you will be safe."
"You have more than earned my trust, Aloy. I look forward to having this unpleasant business behind us so we can officially announce to the Court of Light about Prince Fashav's return," Marad said, bowing his head to Fashav.
Fashav embraced Aloy and kissed her forehead, not caring about their audience.
"This will be over soon, and then our lives together will truly begin, my Sunlight."
"May the Holy Sun help us swiftly set this enemy's dark works at bay. We will have much to celebrate," Avad said, touching his cousin's arm.
Fashav used his left arm to embrace his cousin, content to simultaneously envelop his dear cousin and the love of his life.
Chapter 6: Nil
Summary:
Nil learns what happened in Meridian and its consequences.
Notes:
Not Beta read, I apologize for any mistakes.
Chapter Text
Nil couldn't believe what he was hearing. How did all of these happen below the noses of the Sun King and the Spymaster? It made no sense. Fashav looked like he was about to snap. Relieving these memories while he recounted them was clearly taking its toll on the General. Fashav looked torn, as if he didn't know if he should scream, hit something, or try to continue as best he could.
'I'm tired. Aloy can tell you the rest later,' Fashav said, standing up and avoiding looking at Nil's face.
Nil's jaw went slack with displeased surprise.
'If you are trying to be funny, General, you have failed. Aloy can't speak , or did you already forget? Besides, you can't just stop at the best part. Go on.'
Fashav abruptly turned, lifted Nil by his vest, and slammed him on the nearest wall.
"Don't insult me or her, assassin. She tells me you are a friend, so act like one. You already caused me enough problems, so don't add to the list." Fashav growled, red-hot rage sparking from his eyes. He slammed Nil one last time to make sure his message was understood.
Nil stood there where Fashav left him, looking more confused than repentant.
"I apologize; I did not intend to insult you or Aloy. But I must admit I am at a loss. What problems have I caused you before? I haven't seen you in years? It's not jealousy, is it? You can't be jealous of what has never been." Nil shrugged.
Fashav sighed. "Forget it. The Sun is about to set, and Aloy returns to her true self when the moon rises. That's how she will be able to tell you the rest. Let me be, as it is my turn to endure my curse."
Aloy flew softly through the ruins and landed on Fashav's shoulder as if summoned by her name.
Fashav stroked her head longingly. "I live my cursed form from sundown to sunrise. I don't like asking for favors, but if you can, ensure she stays safe." He kissed her soft feathers lightly.
"I will retreat with her behind that wall while we change. It's not a spectacle for witnesses. Besides, she will want to get dressed before seeing you". Fashav explained and abruptly walked away to the proffered wall.
****
Nil's head was spinning. There was too much information to process and still so much to understand. He looked up through the crevices on the ruin's ceiling and saw the full moon shining through it. He was outraged for Aloy that someone had done this to her, but he was equally relieved that she was alive and that he would get to see her again any minute now.
Soft footsteps led him to the direction where Fashav had exited earlier, and there she was, looking tired and a bit thinner but still the fierce warrior he remembered.
'Nil.' Aloy said, eyes downcast. She looked subdued, with dark circles below her eyes. She stared at him as if she didn't know what to say. Nil's heart hurt for her, the greatest huntress he had ever witnessed brought down by some strange power he couldn't even fathom. How do you even fight it?
She looked so lost that he couldn't stop himself. He approached her slowly and opened his arms in a silent invitation. Aloy's eyes shot up and locked with his; after a beat of hesitation, she ran to him and accepted his embrace. She sobbed in his arms as he held her.
"Shhh, Aloy, it's okay. Let it out. I'm here." Nil said, gently stroking her hair until suddenly his inner alarm bells sounded; he could feel eyes on him. Without hesitation, he reached out to Voice of Our Teeth, ready for whatever was coming at them.
'No, Nil, don't. It's Fash. Please don't hurt him.' Aloy begged, tears still rolling down her cheeks, like a damn that's been broken and couldn't be stopped.
A giant black beast strolled towards them, slowly but purposefully. Nil had thought that Fashav would also become a Hawk, but it seemed he had a different fate. Nil didn't know what to say; he needed a minute to process everything.
'You both must be hungry. I will go to Morlund's inn to get some food for us and return; it won't be long. Wait for me here, please.' He said, gently disentangling himself from Aloy.
Aloy grabbed Nil's arm anxiously. 'You can't tell anyone we're here—not Morlund, not the racers, not anyone,' Aloy begged. We are vulnerable in these cursed animal forms, small and unable to use weapons. One arrow is all it takes if word gets out. Please , Nil.'
Nil nodded. "Don't worry, I understand. I will not betray your trust. I'll be back shortly.'
***
The three of them sat silently, eating the meat, vegetables, and water Nil had brought back. His loyalty was to Aloy, but seeing a mighty Carja general reduced to a beast -beautiful and dangerous looking- but a beast nonetheless. It was jarring. He was at a loss for words, but he could at least address the things he could help with. It was clear that both Aloy and Fashav were exhausted.
'When did you last sleep? You look tired. Both of you do.' Nil asked Aloy, not unkindly.
'A few minutes here and there during the day. I can't waste the night sleeping when it's the only time I have to try to find a solution with my focus. It's the same for Fash.'
'What do you mean, a few minutes? How long has it been since this started?' Nil asked, gesturing at Fashav's form.
'It's been two weeks.' Aloy sighed. Fashav growled softly beside her.
'Two weeks. No sleep for two weeks? No wonder you both are on edge.' Nil combed his hand through his head, his brain spinning, but he continued.
'I propose this: you two are going to sleep. Now. I will keep watch.' Aloy was about to protest, but Nil interrupted her with a raised hand.
'I know you don't want to 'waste' time sleeping, but you need it. You will think better in the morning. It is worth it, trust me.'
Nil could see in Aloy's eyes that she was tempted. She stood up, reached for a pouch stored safely in one of the ruins' niches, took a small triangular-shaped device like hers and Fashav's, and returned. She extended her hand to him and offered the small object in her palm.
'You're right. It would be foolish not to take your offer.' Aloy gave Nil a small smile of thanks, to which he was grateful. It wasn't much, but it was better than tears.
'You want to know what happened. The focus recorded everything. Every word. You can watch the recording. 'Gaia? Can you send Nil the video recording and help him with the focus while Fashav and I sleep?'
'It's good to hear your voice, Aloy. Certainly, I will tutor Nil on the use of the focus. Rest well.' Gaia confirmed.
'Thanks, Gaia'.
Nil brought the focus to his temple in the same position he saw on Aloy's. The device attached itself to his skin, and many lights and images startled him.
'I know it's a lot, but you'll get used to it. Aloy said. 'And don't worry, we don't expect you to be our bodyguard. I know you have your life to return to, and I appreciate you doing this for us tonight. Thank you, Nil.'
'Let's worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes, shall we? I will keep myself entertained while you two rest. Go on,' Nil reassured her.
Strangely enough, he wasn't bothered by the interruption of his routine. Aloy was more than worthy of his time and energy. He owed her that much.
Aloy set up two bedrolls in a corner and lay down. Fashav curled on Aloy's left side while Nil sat down on her right, closer to the room's entrance, where he could control any movements around them.
'Hello Nil. Are you ready to start watching the recordings? I can play them whenever you wish. A polite feminine voice rang inside his head, and it took all his restraint not to jump.
'Yes, if you will.' Nil replied and braced himself for what was to come.
***
Aloy and Fashav entered the ominous room with weapons drawn, ready for anything. The space was strangely empty; only two cloaked figures stood at the altar, their backs turned to them. They were chanting strange prayer-sounding words, but not loud enough for them to understand.
'Why did you call us here, Sun-traitors? Stop your mumbling and show yourselves.' Fashav's voice rang clear, echoing in the ample space.
The Priests turned and lowered their hoods, finally showing their faces.
'There is no fight for you here today, General Fashav. It is over. We are faithful Carjan servants who devoted our lives to the Sun.' The Priest paused to cough several times, a line of blood trickling down his mouth through his chin.
'What is going on here? Explain yourselves before we kill you and get this charade over with.' Aloy shouted.
'Do not worry, Nora huntress. You will find out soon enough. Sundown is upon us, with it, the first part of the reckoning. We might not have an army or strength to kill you, but we can ensure the damaging influence you caused on our Sun king and the Sun faith ends here.' More coughing echoed as the frail-looking Priests tried to stay standing.
'You will not even be granted the satisfaction of killing us, heathen. The poison we ingested will take us to meet our Holy Sun soon enough, and we take with us your lives as you know it. May the rays of the Sun scorch you like you deserve when the Sun rises.'
Aloy looked at Fashav, confusion reflected on their faces. The Priest's mouths were frothing, indicating they must have told the truth about the poison.
'Whatever it was they took, it must have been potent.' Aloy said.
The Priests convulsed and fell to the ground, spasms creating a grotesque sight.
Fashav screamed.
'Aloy! Something's wrong. My body is…vibrating.'
Aloy ran to his side, horrified and helpless as Fashav's form shortened. A weird mass of fur and claws unfolded until he became something she recognized from her focus's explorations of the old world fauna: a wolf.
'Fashav,’she cried.
Erend, Marad, and Avad ran to her, alarmed by the shouting.
'What is the meaning of this?' Avad asked no one in particular, his usually calm and soothing voice ringing with horror and incredulity.
'I don't know! They said something about sundown and sunrise reckoning. I do not understand,' Aloy sobbed, holding Fashav. Thankfully, this animal version of him seemed tame and unthreatening to them, whining softly at Aloy's distress.
***
'Can you stop the recording, please?' Nil asked.
'Certainly.' Gaia replied.
'Is there a way to find out from this recording what the Priests were chanting when Aloy and Fashav arrived?'
'Yes. I'll send you a copy of the curse text. Aloy and Fashav have them as well and have been studying it since. Without success, I'm afraid,' Gaia informed.
Nil opened the text and read through the 6 paragraphs. This curse, as the woman in the focus called it, resembled the Carjan poetry he was forced to study as a child. He read through it again two more times, intrigued. The solution to their predicament seemed rather apparent to him. He would have to discuss it with Fashav in the morning.
Nil tried to move but failed. At some point, while he was engrossed in the focus, Aloy and Fashav changed positions. Nil was now in the middle, a warm fur head resting on his stomach while Aloy slept soundly on his opposite side, her hair spread on his arm and shoulder.
It was not how he envisioned the night would go, but it was not unpleasant. He was warm and satisfied that he could contribute something to help them with their predicament.
Fashav rumbled and snuggled closer. Nil grinned. He would enjoy teasing the General about that in the morning.
