Training Camp

Summary:

A collection of 3 sentence warm-up prompts from The Night Pool retreat weekends.

Chapter 1: Anniversaries

Chapter Text

"You're sure this is alright?"

It was said quietly, murmured into Rin's collarbone from where Haru had snuggled into it; usually Rin loved to go all-out on their anniversary (dinners, theaters, any number of fancy outings), but this year Haru had made a rare request to do something quiet and less overwhelming like simply staying in and cuddling – but now that Rin had agreed it seemed he was a bit self-conscious of it, worried Rin would miss the usual romantics he so looked forward to.

He smiled, something gentle and loving, and readjusted his grip to pull Haru more tightly against his heart before formulating his reply: "Of course – my whole world is right here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."

Chapter 2: Lonely

Chapter Text

He could hear the clock ticking from the other end of his house now. No heartbeat, no footsteps. Haru could swear it didn't use to feel this empty.

Chapter 3: Heat

Chapter Text

The heat swirling around his lower half was almost getting a little too warm, but Haru was hardly going to complain if the kotatsu’s humid confines could get feeling back into his feet. Rin had sprawled out beside him – plenty warm on his own even on a chilly morning like today, but begrudgingly joining to keep Haru company anyway – and he smiled into his tea. Shuffling up closer to press against Rin’s side, mug in hand and a peaceful, silent dawn breaking just outside the window, Haru thought that spending the rest of his life in mornings like this didn’t sound too bad (and if that peace was disturbed by a cold foot making its way onto Rin’s calf afterwards, well, that was hardly his fault).

Chapter 4: Cherry Blossoms

Chapter Text

The snowflakes drifted lazily down, alighting on the soggy carpet of pink below the barren schoolyard sakura.

Rin's grip on Haru's hand tightened, squeezing it with an intensity that didn't match the nonchalant "Well, we'll get it one of these years, right?" that he spoke aloud.

Haru watched him cautiously, taking in the sight of Rin's careful mask of emotion that was refusing to look away from the tree and meet his gaze, before returning his tight hold and stepping close to press their arms together with a simple, meaningful, "I promise."

Chapter 5: Deep

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

"That cuts deep, Haru."

Blue eyes flash dangerously, glinting almost purple in the lowlight, and vindictive spite comes bubbling up out of years of unspoken frustration, neglect, longing – the word isn't even out of his mouth before he regrets it.

"Good."

Notes:

I didn't mean to end this on angst, it's just where my brain needed to steer this one 🙇
