Chapter 1: Nick names & training

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

“Rayleighhhhhh! Where are we going?! We’ve been walking for hoursssss” Luffy dramatically calls out to Rayleigh. They actually have only been walking for 30 minutes. During the training Rayleigh scared a bunch of animals to stand in a space and was walking them over there. The area was far away to test Luffy’s observation haki; to see how far Luffy can sense with it and how hard he will have to train it.

“We’re almost there Luffy, keep up!” Rayleigh ran a little faster, they had far to go. At the pace they were running it would take at least 1 and a half hours.

“You’re a liar!” Luffy's teeth seemed to become sharper when he yelled at Rayleigh, “You said that at the start! You said it was close by!”

“Maybe it would be closer if you called me something more respectful, than just ‘Rayleigh’!” Rayleigh laughed at the face Luffy made, he had a serious frown on his face.

“Why would I want to call you something formal when I can use your name?” Luffy asked.

“Well, I am kindly going out of my way to train you to not lose your friends in the new world-” Rayleigh paused when he saw Luffy’s face darken a bit, “-but they are probably training just as hard as you to not lose anyone to those rough waters.” Rayleigh knew it has only been 2 months since Luffy got his scar and lost a brother, though he wasn’t always the best at being gentle with things like this. He was way better at drinking and gambling than feelings, and when he tried drinking with Luffy, but that didn’t turn out well. Ergh, Rayleigh was getting PTSD just thinking about it.

“They are training as hard, not just probably. And if you’re so stuck on this I’ll just call yoooou…” Luffy paused in talking and running, thinking as hard as his one brain cell could handle, Rayleigh could see the smoke coming out of his. “Grandpa Ray!”

“Wha-!” Rayleigh paused his walking to stare at the words that poured out of Luffy’s mouth. “You know I'm kinda like your uncle?”

“But you're as old as a grandpa? And how are you like my uncle? You look nothing like my uncle. My uncle is a clown with a big nose.” Luffy Questioned Rayleigh.

“I can see why Shanks said you're sometimes ‘brutally honest’. I'm not that old!” Rayleigh laughed, “How old do you think I am?”

“Old” Luffy said bluntly.

“Give me a number.” Rayleigh said, as he jumped over a fallen tree.

“Hmmm. 102.” Luffy answered, skipping over the fallen tree too. They started walking instead of running because of the conversation.
“I’m only 76!” Rayleigh yelled.

“Whatever… Grandpa Ray.”

Chapter 2: Bath Time

Summary:

Bath time. Bathe and touch grass, Luffy does it all.

Chapter Text

“Lulu!” Rayleigh called out while walking over to the place he last saw him.”Where are you!... Don’t tell me he ran off chasing a beast again. I can’t keep having to fish him out of tiger stomachs, and I can’t eat tiger again. I need fish, or anything other than tiger.” Rayleigh mutters the last bit mostly to himself as he sits thinking of all the tortuous tiger meat they have eaten.

The tiger population has slowly begun to realize eating Luffy is not good for them, or in their best interest so they avoid him as much as possible; so now Luffy has started seeking them out. Rayleigh can’t tell if he really likes the taste of tiger or its some other psychological issue of having your brother die in your own arms, his blood coating your hands. Luffy keeps having nightmares about it.

As Rayleigh walks through the jungle environment pushing vines and low hanging branches out of his way as he walks over roots and moss that's been growing for centuries. If Luffy hasn’t been eaten by a tiger, or bear, or elephant, or any animal he can’t take on yet, he’d be in one place only.

Rayleigh walked the familiar path to the only safe place in Rusukaina, where the hat worn by many was. Rayleigh wasn’t surprised to find Luffy there. He always watched the hat from afar, not close enough to be safe, but close enough to see it flow in the wind. Luffy usually went there when he had free time, to stare at the hat on a branch of a tree. Rayleigh couldn’t tell you why but he could tell you that no matter what the reason, Luffy had to tell him before leaving camp to leisurely stroll around trying to fight any poor beast he stumbled across.

“God you stink!” Rayleigh said with a smile on his face and a hand covering his nose, “Do you never bathe when we have a cleaning day?”

“That's what those days are for!? I always just goof around until you come back!” Luffy giggled when Ryayleigh looked at him horrified.

“Get up. You’re taking a bath. I won’t teach you anymore if you don’t bathe.” Rayleigh ordered sternly kicking Luffy off his branch.

“What!? You won’t do that, right grandpa Ray?” Luffy whined as he got to his feet and wiped dirt off his butt from the fall.

“It would be a huge waste of time if I took all of it to train a stinky little brat like you, Lulu.” Rayleigh grabbed Luffy by his shirt, picking him up and started dragging him to a river. “But if you want to survive the new world, I suggest you take a shower so I can train you well.”

“Aww, I was seeing if you wouldn’t notice until the fourth month. Grandpa Ray, will I have to cut my hair too, or can I just grow it long, like you?” Luffy asked innocently, almost making Rayleigh forget that he was smacktalking his observational skills.

“Of course I'd notice you stank like rolled around in mud for a day-” Luffy looked away suspiciously when rayleigh said that, “-and we can see about the hair. If it gets in the way of training we cut it, if it doesn’t, you can grow it out, lulu.

“First, you clean yourself. No one on your crew would have liked you smelling like this, we can worry about the future later.”
