heartbeat across the grass

Summary:

“Are you going to keep ogling me, or are you going to finish your homework?” Suguru whispered, turning to look down at the white-haired boy. Satoru hummed, “I was thinking I would keep looking at you. You’re way more interesting than an essay on an old white man.”

Suguru smirked, all lopsided and lazy, moving to mirror Satoru’s position. “Am I now?”

It was nothing more than a whisper, yet so many feelings and questions were tangled up in those three little words. Satoru walked his fingers towards Suguru’s, stopping short to intertwine their pinkies. The other boy only watched, his gaze so loving that Satoru almost had to look away. But, he didn’t - No, he could never look away from Suguru.

“Yeah. I think so, yeah.”

FROM
SATORU <3<3<3<3 :3

To Satoru,

Why did you write out so many of them? One would’ve been enough, dumbass. I’ll have to check my calendar, but yeah I can probably go see that film with you. You’re gonna shit yourself, so bring spare clothes. Don’t get upset with me for saying that, I’m just showing you I care too

Regards,
Suguru :)

DEAR SUUUUGUUURUUU

SUGURU.

I never want to c a horror film EVER! AGAIN! Dont let me watch one ever again or else.
Anyway!!!! Whatcha up to :^)

LOVE SATORU

To Satoru,

‘See’* And you say that every time. What makes you think I’m gonna convince you not to watch them every single time? Nuh uh. I’m glad you haven’t pissed yourself yet, at least. The likelihood may be low, but the threat is never 0.
I’m actually trying to do my work, like you should be doing right now. If Yaga sees us passing notes he’s gonna read them out loud and everyone’s gonna know you’re at risk of shitting yourself at the pictures.

Hate,
Suguru

DEAR SUGURU!!!

To Satoru,

Did you hear that Haibara and Nanami are dating? Apparently they’ve been together since, like, March.

P.S why do you look so sad? :(
Suguru

Hi Suguruuu

I did hear about that !!! kinda mad nanamin is in a relationship and Im Not. But whatevs im happy for them i guess

Im ok!! I just didnt sleep well :( head hurt :((
Love satoruuu <3

To Satoru,

You’re too ugly to be in a relationship. You’d scare them away with your eyes and gross habits.

Overstimulated again? Do you want to lean on my shoulder? I think I still have some aspirin in my bag, if that would help.

Suguru

Satoru read over the note twice, wrinkling his nose at the sass. He pouted over at his friend, who was lazily writing notes and glancing up at the whiteboard every so often. Satoru wasn’t paying attention obviously, but even if he wanted to, his head felt like it was about to explode. Despite his dark sunglasses and the earbuds stuffed in his ears playing some gentle movie soundtrack, his senses were completely overloaded. Ideally, he’d be back in his shared dorm with Suguru, resting his head on his friend's lap while Suguru’s fingers gently untangled all the knots in his hair.

Suguuu

Thats mean i ambeautiful and you know it blah

Also yes pls i am goingto spontayneeuslee combust i think . can u play with my hair :3 i will die otherwise so u have to

Lovesatoru <3<3<3<3

Satoru slid the note over, resting his head on the desk as he watched Suguru read it. A couple seconds later, the younger boy slowly turned his head to look at his friend with an incredulous look. He held up the piece of paper and pointed at ‘spontayneeuslee’ and tilted his head slightly, as if expecting Satoru to explain. Satoru just frowned back, mouthing ‘What?’.

Suguru closed his eyes with a deep sigh, shaking his head whilst ripping a piece of paper out of his notebook.

To Satoru,

Uh huh.

What the fuck is spontayneeuslee? Did you cast a spell? The fuck? Also, I would but I think Miss would freak. Leaning on me already makes her look constipated. You can have some of my water, take the aspirin, I’ll get it out.

Tell me when you can’t sleep,
Suguru.

Love from satoru (whats ur fav colour?)

Dear Satoru,

I guess so.

Blue. Like your eyes.

Yours,
Suguru. :)

Satoru bit his lip, trying to hide the wide grin that desperately wanted to paint his face. However, there wasn’t much he could do about the blush climbing up his neck, heating up his cheeks almost uncomfortably. Satoru felt a little breathless, letting his lip go and huffing out a little laugh. He glanced over to the boy on his left and was surprised to see him in a similar state. A little pink blush dusted the boy’s tanned skin, making the sparse freckles that danced across his face a little more noticeable. Suguru had his hair down today, opting to push it back from his face with a black hairband. Satoru thanked the universe for allowing him to exist at the same time as Suguru Getou.

With the sun settling low in the sky, their almost empty classroom was covered in a sleepy golden light. In all honesty, the two boys didn’t even need to be passing notes - the only other person in the room was Shoko, who had noise cancelling headphones on so she could focus on her homework - but it was a familiar comfort, like a secret for just them. Maybe it was a bit of fear too, as if their little bubble would pop if they spoke out loud. Satoru’s eyes traced Suguru’s side profile, memorising each and every curve and sharp angle. Admiring the little bump on his nose bridge, the extremely slight (entirely unnoticeable) underbite, his downward-turned lips, his snakebites, the mole beneath his lip. Satoru couldn’t help but smile again, lowering his head to rest on his arms while keeping his gaze locked on Suguru.

Sunday, 30th of October, 2019

“So annoying that Halloween is on a school day!” Satoru whined, holding still as Suguru safety pinned the piece of paper saying ‘THING 1’ in bold letters. The other boy only sighed, moving back slightly to look at his handiwork. It was wonky and the paper was crinkled, but it’s not like it’s going to matter all that much at the end of the night anyway. “Means I get to leave early and go to sleep.” Suguru replied, slipping on his sneakers. “Me, one. Satoru, zero.”

The white-haired boy only pouted, rubbing his eye and adjusting his sunglasses after. “You’re such an old man. Sooo boring, the most boring ever.”

“Man, I’m tired. It’s not a crime to be the sleepiest guy on planet Earth.” Suguru replied as he stretched, staring longingly at his bed. “Are you sure we have to go? We could just pig out on sweets and watch shitty horror films together.”

Satoru paused, which was somewhat out of character for him. The boy was always moving in some way, be it tapping his fingers on any surface or by shifting his weight over and over. “I mean…” He mumbled, glancing over at Suguru’s bed as well. “Can we cuddle?”

Suguru raised an eyebrow, not at all expecting Satoru to give in so easily. “Well, I mean, yeah, duh. But I thought you really wanted to go to this party? We could cuddle and watch shit films any other day, but we rarely get to have parties with everyone.”

“Yeah, but..” Satoru bit the inside of his cheek, suddenly shy. “You’re tired, aren’t you? It’s no fun if you’re too tired to do anything. I’d be bored.” Suguru felt his heart ache just a little, reaching out to take one of Satoru’s weird bony spider hands. “I’ll be there, Satoru. I was only joking, y’know? We’ll go to this party and do whatever and then.. I dunno, we come back and cuddle?” He intertwined their fingers, even if a little voice in the back of his head (that sounded oddly like Shoko) was saying friends don’t do this sort of stuff. Suguru couldn’t find it in him to care, especially not when the boy in front of him was just a little bit flushed and grinning widely. “I’m holding you to that, Sugu.”

P.S, you’re lucky I’m left handed. But of course, anything for you.

Suguru.

Sugu

Thas more like it :] i will forgive u if u 1. Make my bed for me, 2. Do my laundry for a month, 3. Buy me more strawberry gummies, 4. Gimme a kiss

:) satoru :)

Suguru looked over at Satoru, who was pretending to copy notes off the whiteboard. His thumb was ever so slightly caressing the back of Suguru’s hand, skin soft against Suguru’s own calloused fingers, a byproduct of playing the guitar and not moisturising his hands enough. With a small chuckle and a whole load of courage, Suguru brought their joined hands up to his mouth. Satoru whipped his head to the side, wide eyed and mouth open. “Su-” He faltered, just as Suguru placed a light kiss to the back of Satoru’s hand.

Despite the heat building in his face, Suguru simply repeated the action, before lowering their hands back to the table they sat at. Satoru sat frozen beside him, his cheeks an unbelievable shade of red, which clashed violently with his light hair.

“I’m not doing your laundry.” Suguru mumbled, avoiding Satoru’s piercing gaze.

“Okay,” Satoru whispered, voice cracking slightly. “That’s okay.”

Suguru <3

you could never make me uncomfortable

p.s meet at the pond after class?

Love, satoru

Suguru bit his lip, tucking the note away in his pencil case. He quickly scribbled a reply, something perfectly eloquent and not at all dumb, sliding it over to Satoru. He knew that, over the past couple of months, their relationship had progressed beyond your standard friendship boundaries. A small voice told him to put a stop to it, told him that his friend deserves someone better, told him to go straight back to their dorm instead of meeting him at the pond. But, perhaps a little selfishly, Suguru wanted this more than anything. Wanted Satoru’s hand in his, wanted to keep waking up a little too overheated because a certain white-haired boy decided to cling to him like a koala, wanted to kiss his knuckles and wherever else Satoru would let him.

The boy beside him scooted closer, his chair making an awful sound as it dragged across the wooden floor and dropped his head onto Suguru’s shoulder with an exhale. Suguru adjusted himself a little, lowering his arm to make it a little more comfortable. Satoru immediately grabbed his hand, playing with his fingers sleepily. Suguru went along with it, turning his palm up so Satoru could trace little shapes into the rough skin and dance his fingers up toward the tips of Suguru’s. It was nice, if a bit ticklish, to be in this little bubble with the white-haired boy.

Their teacher, Yaga, made eye contact with Suguru, raising a brow as if asking if Satoru was okay. It was fairly well known among their year level that Satoru had sensory issues, which is why more often than not the boy would waltz around with sunglasses and headphones on, even when he was indoors. Satoru never let anyone (except Suguru, apparently) touch him, going so far as to pull ridiculous moves to dodge incoming bodies or hands. But today was particularly hot and bright, unusual for the time of year. Despite the aircon blasting, the initial hit of sweltering heat was enough to throw Satoru off for the rest of the day.

Suguru nodded at Yaga, who gave a slight nod back before turning back to his computer screen. Suguru went back to his workbook, suddenly remembering why he stopped working in the first place. The boy on his shoulder was still fidgeting with his hand, albeit a little lazily, so he couldn’t reach over and grab the eraser sitting on the far side of the desk. The black-haired boy sighed, turning his head and nosing at the crown of Satoru’s hair. “Hey, ‘Toru,” He muttered, intertwining their fingers to ensure his attention. “Hmm?” Satoru hummed, tilting his head back and looking at Suguru through half-lidded eyes.

Oh, fuck. Suguru felt his heart stutter, suddenly feeling bad for bothering the boy. “Sorry, love. Just need your eraser, remember?”

Satoru grumbled a little, using his free hand to feel around for the eraser. He pushed it over to Suguru’s side of the table, flicking it onto his workbook. Suguru laughed quietly, squeezing Satoru’s hand once in thanks. The boy only mumbled something about ‘disturbing his peace’, before moving to hug Suguru’s arm instead of going back to playing with his hand. Just as Suguru went to erase the pencil from the page, Satoru spoke up. “You called me love.” He said quietly, so quietly in fact, that Suguru almost didn’t hear him.

He froze, hand twitching where it rested on the desk. “Yeah.”

Satoru didn’t reply.

After Class

The gardens at Jujutsu High were probably the best part of the school, in Satoru’s opinion. Well, that and Suguru, but the latter isn’t exactly a part of the school so he doesn’t really count.

When Satoru first arrived six years ago, he almost threw up from how overstimulating it was. They were playing the music just a little bit too loud, and even though there were only twelve new students, they kept popping confetti crackers every second as if it were some big event. Satoru, who was homeschooled up until that point and used to complete silence unless he was being spoken to or during his martial arts lessons, was absolutely freaked out.

He remembers splitting from the small group almost immediately, running off down an unfamiliar path in search of peace and quiet. It took about 5 minutes of sprinting to find a little gondola beside a rather large pond, nestled against the cliffside. There were flowers lining the gravel path leading up to the gondola, nestled amongst bamboo and towering trees. On the other side of the pond there was a little picnic bench, old discoloured wood being held together by rusty nails and intricate iron armrests. Every so often, a bee or butterfly would land on one of the flowers, resting for a moment before flying off again. Satoru wandered around the tranquil space, kicking pebbles and giggling to himself when the koi in the pond would make little bubbles in the water. All the visuals aside, it was just quiet enough that the itching in his teeth and burning under his skin subsided to a blissful hum.

A few months after he befriended Suguru, Satoru took him to the pond. It was a little terrifying at first, letting another person into his little sanctuary, but when Suguru stepped into the clearing with Satoru, he exhaled heavily. The black-haired boy walked around the garden slowly, not saying a word the entire time. Satoru sat on the steps of the gondola, observing the other almost anxiously. He didn’t know what he was expecting or if he was expecting anything at all, but when Suguru sat beside him silently and kept enough distance between them that they didn’t touch but could still feel each other’s body heat, Satoru realised he was expecting something.

He was expecting noise. Satoru was waiting for Suguru to express his feelings on the area, ask questions or just talk. But the other boy didn’t make a sound, not even as he turned to look at Satoru with questioning eyes.

'Satoru pulled out his phone, finding his notes app, and hastily typed out something - anything - that could take Suguru’s gaze off him.

‘Whaddya think?’

Satoru turned his phone to face the other boy, who gently took it from his shaky hands. Something odd twisted in Satoru’s stomach when Suguru started typing a response.

‘It’s nice. Quiet. Is this where you disappear to?’

Suguru handed the phone back, pulling his legs up to his chest and resting his chin on his knees. Satoru nodded, before realising in order to keep the conversation going, he had to actually respond.

‘Ye :D Iget overhwelemed with likesounds nd stuff so :p thx for not talking idk i appreciate it :]’

He shoves the phone back in Suguru’s hands, who smiles slightly at the inelegance of it all.

‘I understand. I thought as much, considering you weren’t talking at all the entire walk here. Don’t thank me, it’s all good :)’

Suguru passed the phone back, tucking a stray strand of hair behind his ear. Usually, during class, Suguru pinned his hair back to keep it out of his face. Although Satoru saw it down more often than not, given they share a dorm, it was still a little breathtaking everytime.'

Present day Satoru watched from the picnic bench as Suguru threw fish food into the pond, his hair in a high bun to keep it off his neck. Although the sun was setting and a cool breeze had started making its way over the mountain, the lingering heat was still offensive. Satoru had stripped down to his undershirt and rolled his pant legs up as much as possible, fanning himself with his workbook. They headed to the gardens immediately after class ended, not bothering to stop at their dorm to change into more casual clothes.

Suguru had untucked his shirt and undone a few of the top buttons before rolling his sleeves up. The sight normally would’ve made Satoru blush, but he was far too exhausted to do anything but smile a little bit too dopily at his best friend.

Ever since the first time they came to the pond together, they’d never spoken a word within the space during all their other visits. Usually, Satoru would take his phone out, open his notes app and write out whatever he wanted to say. They would do that for hours, leaning against each other and typing out whatever comes to mind.

Satoru has saved every single entry, dating back to the first one. He also saves every note or letter from Suguru, keeping them in an old beat up shoebox under his bed, occasionally taking it out to reread all the responses he can’t remember the context for.

He watches as the younger boy walks away from the pond toward the gondola, placing the fish food back in a little storage box they keep beside the structure, before trudging back to the bench and flopping down next to Satoru with a tired sigh. The blue eyed boy reached over, tucking the other boy’s stubborn bangs behind his heavily pierced ear, resting his palm against the side of Suguru’s (kinda gross) sweaty neck.

Suguru turned his head to look at Satoru, a slight frown gracing his features in a silent question. Satoru only gestures for him to lay down, patting his thigh to encourage him further. Suguru raised an eyebrow, before sighing and awkwardly shuffling around to lay on his back, resting his head on Satoru’s leg. One of his arms hung off the edge of the seat, whilst the other lay across his stomach lazily.

Without missing a beat, Satoru began fanning Suguru instead of himself, brushing any little strands of hair off the other boy’s forehead. The heat coming from the other boy was honestly uncomfortable, but if it was between Suguru sitting beside him or laying on his lap, Satoru would pick the latter any day.

Chapter 2: Can I be close to you?

Summary:

'Was it odd to crave the residual body heat of his best friend? Maybe, but in the chilly gymnasium during their last high school exam, Satoru couldn’t find it in him to care when he placed his palm down flat where he imagined Suguru’s rested just moments before.'

Notes:

hihi!! i'm here... with another silly little chapter...

in the time between this chapter and the last, i made a bunch of new friends who have been so lovely and supportive with my ideas for this fic and it's just ,,, eeek :')

before i drop the songs for this chapter, i want to apologise ahead of time if there are any mistakes or whatever!! i do read over it a few times before posting but since i dont have a beta reader i might miss a few things!!! i do eventually get around to fixing it all up but yk... wanted to apologise anyway <3 another thing is the layout of the notes was brought up (ily lily), and i did think abt switching it up but . i kinda realised that if they're passing notes it made less sense to put them on either side of the page ? if that makes sense . idk . anyway !!! i would say keep an eye out for any wording changes, ur biggest hints that theyre passing notes is that suguru is in italics (he starts with 'dear satoru,' every time) and satoru will usually start his notes with a variation of suguru's name! i do also try to put some space between the writing and the notes, but i understand it might get a bit tricky 3 i have more to say but i'll leave it for the end!

SONGS:
love like this (acoustic) - kodaline
in the woods - lord huron
apocalypse - cigarettes after sex
true blue - boygenius
big black car - gregory alan isakov

bloom - the paper kites
mystery of love - sufjan stevens

Suguru.

HELLO SUGU

LOVE FROM SATORU <3333

Dear Satoru,

Man what the hell.
Life worth missing by car seat headrest. You’re just saying that because I played it for you last night. What’s your actual favourite song?

Yours,
Suguru

SUGU

Uh duh!!! you have such a pretty voice suguuuu idk what the original sounds like but ur version is WAAAY better (dont argue i know everything and my word is law)
WHATS UR FAV SONG!!

Love from ur toru :3

Dear Satoru,

Suguru paused, pen tapping the paper under it a few times. It wasn’t the first time his friend had complimented his singing, but for some reason this specific compliment has left the poor boy extremely flustered. What was he supposed to say to that? ‘Thanks, dude!’ or ‘Thank you, Satoru!’. Honestly, he’d like to jump up and down whilst clapping and giggling, but he had a reputation to uphold, so that was out of the question. With a deep breath, Suguru wrote the first thing that came to mind.

Dear Satoru,

Teehee

My favourite song is I Still Remember by Bloc Party, I’m sure I’ve shown it to you before.

Yours,

Suguru

Almost immediately after he slid the piece of paper back to Satoru, the boy let out the ugliest laugh Suguru has ever heard come from his mouth - and he’s heard a lot of weird shit come out of that boy over the years.

The entire class - which, granted, wasn’t very many people- turned to look in their direction with confused expressions. Their teacher for this subject was unfortunately not the ever-forgiving Yaga, but instead the extremely unforgiving Miss K. No one knew her actual name, she had absolutely no digital footprint, never left the school premises and never spoke about her life. Her blonde hair was always pulled into a tight, sleek bun and she smelled like if you spilled every perfume ever into one pot and then added a splash of hospital ward as a finishing touch. In addition to all of that, she absolutely despised Satoru and Suguru. Like, properly hated them.

So when Satoru cackled, Suguru’s wide eyed gaze immediately panned over to Miss K, who had gone dead still in front of the whiteboard. Distantly, he could hear Shoko snickering to herself and Nanami sighing in a way that was solely reserved for Satoru’s antics.

“Would you like to share with the class, Gojo-san?” Miss K sneers, still not turning around. Satoru pulled a face, scratching the side of his nose. “Uh, no? Thanks for asking, though.”

“Satoru!” Suguru hissed without any heat behind it. Despite the inevitable detention headed their way, the boy couldn’t find it in himself to be mad. “It wasn’t a question. Please, share whatever it was that made you so rudely interrupt my lesson - One of the last before your exams begin.” Miss K turns around finally, wearing a very foul expression. Suguru had to clench his jaw to stop himself from laughing at the look on her face, holding back from asking if she needed any Metamucil.

“It sure sounded like a question.” Satoru replied with a sniff, glancing up at Miss K with a very innocent look on his face. She let out a series of offended sounds, waving her hands incredulously and scoffing. “Did you just sass me? In my own classroom? You know what, go sit outside. Don’t come back in until I tell you to. Actually, don’t come back in at all. We’ll talk after class. Have a good, long think about your actions, mister.” Miss K growls, stalking over to the sliding door and pulling it open angrily.

Satoru grinned, gathering his things - including the piece of paper that caused the entire exchange - and skipped towards the door. With his gangly limbs and ridiculous height, the sight was enough to make Suguru let out a hideous snort that sent him into a coughing fit. However, with Miss K in an awful mood due to Satoru’s remarks, Suguru very quickly found himself outside the classroom beside a very giggly blue eyed menace.

“You can’t just write out ‘teehee’, dude,” Satoru said, a grin still plastered on his bright face. “I only laughed because I couldn’t read it in your voice, like, at all.”

With a soft chuckle, Suguru bumped their shoulders gently. The two walked down the quiet hallway, lighthearted despite the detentions they’re definitely copping for doing so. “I didn’t know what else to say,” Suguru replied, “It’s hard replying to compliments over a scrap of paper.”

“So you wrote out a little giggle instead of just… laughing?” Satoru made a face, clearly trying not to laugh at his friend. Which was greatly appreciated, given how mortifying this entire interaction is becoming. Suguru wasn’t about to admit that he had a big internal debate over what kind of response would be appropriate. “Hey, look. Miss K would’ve thrown a fit if I actually laughed! Look at us now, man. You and your fucked up hag laugh.” Suguru bantered, sticking his hands in his pockets as they stepped outside. It wasn’t too cold, given it was only early November, but the cool breeze was enough to make Suguru’s fingers ache. A quiet string of words brushed past in his thoughts very briefly, something along the lines of ‘Hand. Hold. Warm. Satoru. Yeah.’ - They were all swatted away fairly quickly.

With an uncharacteristically timid glance toward his best friend, Suguru caught the beginnings of a blush dancing its way across the bridge of Satoru’s nose. The tip of said nose was an impressive shade of red, an impossibly endearing trait that Suguru always caught himself simpering over. “I do not have a hag laugh, thanks lots, you ass.” Satoru stuck his tongue out, shoving his friend lightly. Suguru could only snort in response, trying to push away all the miniature versions of himself running around in his brain screaming at the touch.

It didn’t take long for the two of them to saunter into the dormitory, cheeks flushed from the cold. Satoru did a goofy little dance as he stepped into the warm building, lips pursed and brows pulled into a grumpy frown. “Cold?” Suguru asked, despite it being both an obvious and a dumb question. Satoru made a ‘duh’ face, shaking his hands out and squeezing them into fists a few times. “Oh no, not at all, I just wanted to do a little jig for you. How’d I do?” Was the sarcastic reply the black haired boy got.

Suguru sighed, rolling his eyes fondly. A warm little growth bloomed across his chest, sinking deep into his bones and easing a weight off his lungs he wasn’t even aware was there. Satoru, in all his stupidity, was devastatingly lovable. White hair was all mussed and windswept, exposing the entirety of the boyish features Suguru adored. Even when the older boy sniffed and then wiped his nose on his jacket sleeve, Suguru believed he was the prettiest boy he’d ever seen.

“It was wonderful, truly. I’ve never seen such a graceful interpretation of a stick bug ever in my life.”

“Oi!”

It’ll still be us against the world, ‘Toru. It’s just that the world will be more than a school for gifted kids in the mountains. But we’ll be okay. :)

Yours,

Suguru

Sunday, 13th of November, 2019

Hidden beneath the warmth of his featherdown duvet, Satoru couldn’t help dozing in and out of a restless sleep. He’d had an awful migraine the whole day, the pressure in his skull making it near impossible to move a single muscle. Every time he opened his eyes, he was overcome with a wave of nausea that stuck around for a good fifteen minutes, pushing bile up his throat until he was forced to swallow it back down.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew it must be the early afternoon. When he wasn’t afflicted with a skull shattering migraine, Satoru would be up and about in the morning on the weekend, spending his time complaining about being awake so early on a non school day. He’d launch himself onto Suguru’s bed, where the other boy would still be half asleep and grumpy, proceeding to chatter relentlessly until Suguru eventually rolled out of bed and paid attention to him.

With a groan, Satoru wrapped himself up in his blanket tightly and slowly lifted himself into a sitting position, knowing he needed to drink something and probably down some aspirin. He stumbled to his feet, wincing as a painful throb echoed through his head all the way down his neck. With the hand that wasn’t holding the blanket together, he slowly picked his sunglasses up off his bedside table and slid them on in preparation for the bright light waiting for him outside his and Suguru’s room.

Satoru fumbled for the doorknob lazily, pulling the door open and immediately screwing his face up at the sunlight streaming through the big windows. A pathetic whimper left his lips, pout following soon after. He was just about to trudge his way to the kitchen when a gentle voice called out to him.

“‘Toru? You’re up late.” Suguru mumbled, stretching his arms up over his head. “I was just coming to check on you. Everything okay?”

Satoru shuffled around slowly, pulling his blanket around him tighter. “Mmph.” He replied, regretting it when the vibrations from his vocal cords rattled his brain. In the state he was in, Satoru couldn’t hide the pain painted across his face, which Suguru picked up on with just one look - of course he did. There was very little Satoru could hide from the other boy, which proved to be both a blessing and a curse.

“Oh, ‘Toru. Migraine?” Suguru whispered, moving closer to shield the side of Satoru’s face from the light coming in through the window. With one hand blocking the sun, Suguru placed the other on Satoru’s forehead, frowning at the warmth. Satoru sighed at the pleasant coolness of his friend’s palm, leaning into it slightly. “Why are you up, stupid? You could’ve just texted me, I would’ve brought you some painkillers.” Suguru scolds, voice hushed and gentle. He was so heart-achingly mindful of Satoru’s current condition, even when telling him off.

“Didn’t want to bother you. Didn’t wanna look at my phone.” Satoru slurs, eyes shut tightly behind his glasses as he focuses on the blissful pressure of Suguru’s palm. “First off, you’re an idiot if you think you could ever bother me,” Suguru started, using his foot to nudge the door open - Satoru hadn’t shut it properly, so it slipped open easily. “Secondly, texting me would’ve taken like, two seconds. Go lay back down, I’ll be back with the usual migraine stuff.”

As soon as Suguru’s hand left his face, Satoru frowned. “Come back,” He huffed, chasing the other boy’s cool touch sluggishly. “Y’cold. Stop making me talk.”

A soft, breathy laugh came out at his mumbling, bringing a more lukewarm palm back with it. Even if it wasn’t as relieving as it was at first, the comfort and weight was enough to lull the tension out of Satoru’s muscles. He wasn’t normally this clingy - well, maybe he was, but it isn’t his fault that Suguru was so comforting- it’s just that something about the hammering in his skull made him especially needy for the presence of his best friend.

“‘Toru, you’ll feel better once you have something to drink. I’ll be quick, hm?” Suguru whispered, using the hand that was blocking the sun to gently nudge Satoru inside their dorm room. “You can even take my bed if you want. I’ll just sleep in yours.”

“Cuddle?”

Suguru smiled fondly, awkwardly walking them inside the dark room. “Alright, you big baby. We can cuddle. Just don’t drool on me again, yeah?”

“Mmph.”

They shuffled towards Suguru’s bed, which was neatly made and tucked into the left corner of the rather spacious dorm. The shelves hovering above the king single were stacked with a wide range of philosophy books, trinkets and CDs.

There were a few framed photos here and there, reminders of his family back home in the countryside. Satoru often found himself staring at the photos with something akin to envy sitting heavy in his stomach. He’d met Suguru’s family for the first time a few days before they started their second year at Jujutsu High, attending the makeshift birthday party his parents organised for Suguru’s thirteenth with Shoko.

It was a rushed invitation and an even more rushed party. Suguru had spent hours beforehand explaining the dynamic of his family, how his mum worked full time as a hairdresser and how his dad worked from home as a data analyst. The minute they stepped foot onto the verandah, amidst numerous plants and suncatchers, the door swung open to reveal a woman who looked almost exactly like Suguru. The main difference was that instead of her hair being jet black like her son’s, it was a light honey brown that seemed almost golden in the midday sun. Satoru had felt confused then, because in comparison, he looked nothing like either of his parents. He stuck out like a sore thumb, awkwardly tall with hair the colour of snow and striking blue eyes.

That winter, Satoru learned that family was less about resemblance and more about loving unconditionally. They sat around the dining table, eating zaru soba and recounting stories of their first year at Jujutsu High. Shoko had been sly, telling Suguru’s parents the context for all the detentions he’d gotten throughout the year, making sure to emphasise how dangerous it was that Satoru and Suguru had gotten on like a house on fire.

Satoru had paused then, suddenly terrified that he’d be dubbed a ‘bad influence’ and be told to stay away from Suguru. He remembers feeling overwhelmed with an onslaught of memories dating back to his early years, all the tutors he went through telling him just how repulsive he was.

Yet, when he finally looked up and met the lilac eyes of Suguru’s father, all he saw was a gentle amusement - in that moment, Satoru understood.

Tearing his tired eyes away from the photographs, Satoru shed his cocoon of blankets in favour of crawling under the cool sheets of Suguru’s bed. He heard the other boy sigh, followed by the rustling of blankets being tidied up behind him. “I’ll be back in a minute, okay? Don’t fall asleep.”

“Uh huh.. S’gu?” Satoru mumbled, curling around one of the many pillows scattered across his best friend’s bed.

“Yeah, love?”

Satoru smiled as much as he could with the ache in his face, “Thank you.”

“Anything for you, ‘Toru.”

Dear Satoru,

I’m always right so you must be doing a lot of hating

Nuh uh.

I swear you’re passing by the skin of your teeth, dude. That or you’re being possessed during every exam with the ghost of some scholar.

They’re dating, ‘Toru. That’s pretty standard for people in relationships.

Yours,

Suguru

To suguuu

I’m a hater for real!! :3

Yuh huh wtf
I DONT WANT TO BE POSSESSED???? Ok u and shoko need to exorcise me dude what the fuck

We smile at each other a lot ,, are we in a relationship ?
LOVINGLY YOURS ,, SATORUUU

Suguru paused. ‘Are we in a relationship?’

The thing is, they may as well be. It wasn’t an uncommon occurrence for people to assume the two were together, and upon extensive late night reflections, Suguru can pinpoint every single reason that could’ve inspired their assumptions.

It wasn’t an unwarranted speculation, just not an accurate one. Sure, they’re closer to each other than they are with all their other friends. Sure, they hold hands with the occasional kiss on the knuckles. Sure, they sleep in the same bed. But even if Suguru allowed himself one selfish moment of believing it could be more, he knew it was unfair to treat their friendship like that when Satoru didn’t feel the same way.

With a half-hearted side eye toward his best friend, who was balancing his pencil on his top lip and definitely not listening to Yaga, Suguru bit the inside of his cheek before writing down his reply.

Dear Satoru,

We’ll schedule a day to exorcise you. Just remind Shoko that exorcisms don’t always require a scalpel. Should be alright.

But anyway, no ‘Toru, we aren’t dating. I think we’d know if we were.

Suguru hesitated, pen stopping before writing his usual signoff, heart aching ever so slightly. He isn’t Satoru’s, not in any official sense - yet every inch of Suguru’s soul was so undoubtedly, unquestionably, irrefutably his.

Still yours,

Suguru.

Friday, 25th of November, 2019

On the last day of their exams, it rained. In fact, it rained so hard that the ceiling of the gymnasium started leaking and the lights began to flicker. There was a bucket right beside the little single-seated desk Satoru sat at, catching a concerningly steady stream of droplets coming from the roof, which was becoming increasingly more distracting.

Every few minutes, Satoru would look down at the bucket just to note where the water level was compared to the last time he looked. He knew it was in his best interests to stay focused on the exam sitting on his desk. He knew that it determined whether or not he can get into the university he and Suguru are both aiming towards. However, he was only human.

Satoru tore his eyes away from the bucket, reaching forward to where Shoko was sitting and tapped on her shoulder. “Psst, Shoko, can we swap seats?” He whispered, trying to avoid getting told off. He’d gone all day without receiving an exasperated look from any of the teachers, which was a new record for him. Even though the teacher currently monitoring the exam was Yaga, Satoru was dead set on not breaking his ‘good boy streak’ he had going.

Shoko turned to look at him with an unimpressed expression. “Why would I do that?” She asks, face unchanging.

Satoru pouts, “The bucket. I can’t concentrate. I keep looking at it.” He tells her, gesturing toward the half full bucket beside his desk.

“So you’re making it my problem?” Shoko raises an eyebrow, although her tone was betrayed by the little twitch at the corner of her mouth. “Go ask Geto. He’d probably find a way to stop the rain for you, if you asked.”

It was Satoru’s turn to try and stop a smile appearing on his face, heart pounding at the lazy remark. He was sure he looked stupid, cheeks red and mouth contorted to hide his goofy grin. The worst part was knowing that whilst Suguru isn’t shameless enough to pretend to fight the elements, he is endearing enough to frown at them like he has personal issues with Mother Nature herself.

As Shoko turned around to focus back on her exam, Satoru glanced around the gym, trying to remember where Suguru was sitting. They were banned from sitting near each other during tests or exams, due to the ruckus they caused throughout a test in Year 9 - which involved a lot of immature fart noises and swapping of test sheets. Eventually, he found the familiar head of long black hair, pulled back in a french braid that Shoko had done while they waited for the exam to start.

He looked pretty, as usual. Satoru always looked forward to any different hairstyles the other boy did, admiring the way his hands twisted and manipulated the sleek strands of hair. When he was in the height of his alternative phase, he’d gotten an undercut and dyed a thick strand of hair on either side of his head a dark blue. Satoru was originally horrified that he changed his haircut so much, hated seeing the short hairs on the lower part of his head, right up until Suguru pulled his hair out of the topknot he kept it in. Satoru tried very hard that day to not run his fingers through the thick strands.

With a sigh, Satoru stood as quietly as he could, picking up his pencil and exam papers before sauntering on over to Suguru. He stuck his tongue out at Shoko as he passed her, snorting when she flipped him off in response.

Suguru was flipping through the pages when Satoru waltzed up beside him, brows furrowed and shoulders tense. Although, upon noticing the presence right next to him, he paused and looked up. “‘Toru? What are you doing out of your seat? We’re in the middle of an exam, if you hadn’t realised.” He whispered, turning his head to look at everyone else. Satoru didn’t know whether to be offended or pleased that no one seemed to bat an eye at him walking around, choosing to settle on being flattered to avoid thinking too hard about it.

“I have a bucket next to my desk.” Satoru replies simply.

Suguru blinks twice, “Okay. Thanks for letting me know?”

“No, like, I have a bucket next to my desk because the roof is leaking.” He stresses, as if his intentions right now were obvious. Suguru only stared at him, tongue darting out to wet his lips before he spoke. “Yeah no, I heard you the first time about the bucket. I just don’t know where you’re going with this.”

Satoru rubbed his eye lazily, using the same hand to drag his fingers through his hair. “It’s distracting. I can’t focus. I keep looking at the bucket and the water and then when I look away it’s been like 5 minutes.” Suguru’s expression changed from confusion to what looked like endearment, but Satoru couldn’t be sure. “So you want to swap seats is what I’m hearing,” Suguru teases, already shuffling his papers together and stacking his pencil case on top of them. “You can sit here, ‘Toru. Scoot, I’m standing up.”

Obligingly, he moves aside to allow the younger boy to step away from the chair. “Thank you, my dearest Sugu!” Satoru grins, pinching the other boy’s cheek affectionately, grinning wider when his hand gets gently swatted away. “Yeah, yeah. Just focus on the test, Satoru.” Suguru hooked their pinkies briefly, before walking off to Satoru’s previous seat.

As he dumped his papers on the desk, he caught the eye of Yaga, who was shaking his head almost fondly from behind his laptop. Satoru awkwardly sat down, turning his attention to figuring out where he left off last.

The wood of the desk was still warm from where Suguru was leaning on it, a comforting detail he couldn’t help but fixate on. Suguru’s warmth kept him grounded - kept him sane. Was it odd to crave the residual body heat of his best friend? Maybe, but in the chilly gymnasium during their last high school exam, Satoru couldn’t find it in him to care when he placed his palm down flat where he imagined Suguru’s rested just moments before.
