Chapter Text
*DING*
Adjusting his tie, a tall man in a stylish black suit exited the elevator into a seemingly empty room, with two large fans in the walls as its only distinctive features. There was another person wearing a similar suit in the room, acting as the guard. But even though his attention was on the newspaper he was reading, he was still aware of what was happening, as evidenced by nodding to the first man as he passed him.
Reaching the door, the man opened the door and exited the building. He then walked to the sidewalk, where a cab was waiting for him. Getting in, the man gave the driver the directions. Nodding, the driver spoke what seemed like jibberish before pulling back onto the road. Yet, the man acted like it was part of his regular everyday routine. And even when a green, metal device slowly slid out of the driver's hat, the man ignored it.
After about twenty minutes, they arrived at the bullheads. Getting out, the man paid the driver, who nodded twice his thanks, with the metal piece coming out again. Closing the door, the man watched the cab drive around and went to the nearest bullhead. He showed his ID before getting on the taking a seat. The man then brought up his briefcase and inspected it to ensure nothing had happened to it during the trip so far. Soon, the doors closed, with the bullhead taking off moments later. Once they were in the air, the man looked out the window and huffed when he spotted some familiar objects. He then took out a few tabloids to see if there were any interesting events that needed the organization's attention.
One Hour Later
"Ah, Beacon Academy. It's been a while since I have seen you in person. Glad to see you're still standing... somehow." The man said, gazing upon the prestigious academy after exiting the bullhead.
Adjusting his suit a bit, the man began walking toward the academy's entrance. Yet, the man walked in such a practiced way that made him blend into the background, to the point where most would pass over him without a second thought. And those who did notice him passed him off as a faculty member or a representative of Vale's council. However, that did not mean none of them felt at ease.
Once inside the academy, the man seamlessly made his way through the halls. After a couple of twists and turns and taking the stairs instead of the elevators, the man made it to the Headmaster's office. But instead of knocking, the man entered the office as he was expected and called here in the first place.
"Ah, Zed. It's good to see you." Ozpin said, smiling, before motioning for Zed to take a seat.
"It's good to see you too, Ozpin." Zed said as he took his seat. "I see the school is still standing... somehow."
"Something I am still wondering about myself given some of the students that have attended in the past. But how about on your end?"
"You know I can't tell you that, Ozpin." Zed answered, chuckling, as they had gone through this conversation numerous times. "How the organization is going must remain a secret. I am already breaking numerous protocols, rules, and regulations just by meeting you and having this conversation."
"Right. Anyway. Shall we get this meeting started?" Ozpin asked as he pressed a button on his desk, which activated a special function that would ensure their conversation wouldn't leave the office.
"Yes. While the world might not be ending, there is still a ton of paperwork that needs filing."
"And that's something no one can ever escape."
"No." Zed agreed, chuckling. "Even the Arquilians, who have technology beyond comprehension, can't escape paperwork."
"I can imagine. Anyway. The reason I asked you to come over, Zed, is that I might have a predicament at school."
"What kind of predicament?"
"I fear that, with the coming semester, which will also include hosting the Vytel Festival, more threats than I would be able to keep up with or handle will arise."
"What kind of threats?"
"I'm unfortunately not one hundred percent sure."
"Then what are you sure about? While I know a hunch isn't something you should rely on solely, it can be better than nothing."
"True." Ozpin said before sighing. He then stood up and walked over to his window. "I fear that our enemies are plotting something big that could turn the tables on us and make everything we have done worthless."
"How so?"
"Ironwood has informed me not too long ago about several robberies in the other kingdoms that were similar to the ones happening here in Vale. Initially, we thought they were done by random street thugs."
"What did they steal?"
"The usual: Dust, weapons, ammo, and lien."
"But something is telling me those were only extras and not what they actually wanted."
"Exactly. These robberies were not done by common thugs. They were orchestrated by our enemies."
"What were they actually after?"
"Anatomy books about humans, faunus, Grimm, and animals. They also stole quite a bit of medical supplies, computer parts, and engineering books."
"Hmm. Not the weirdest shopping list I have seen, but it definitely raises a few red flags, even for us." Zed said, cupping his chin. Even though it didn't sound like that big of a threat, he had to remind himself that Ozpin and the rest of the humans and faunus had never faced galactic-level threats or threats from other worlds in general.
"Wait until you hear the kicker."
"What's the kicker?"
"We have strong evidence that our enemies have recruited two infamous criminals: Arthur Watts and Merlot."
"Arthur Watts. A brilliant scientist in many different fields who have gone mad. And Merlot is another madman with a near-zealous liking for the Grimm and what they can do." Zed said, remembering the files he read on them. "But where do we come in, Ozpin? This isn't a matter we would typically deal with."
"True. Situations like this are typically beneath your notice since you're dealing with outside threats. However, I have a strong feeling that our enemies have learned that we are not alone in this universe. And I have an even stronger feeling that they might have even allied with some that are also seeking our destruction. Plus, since they are our enemies, I fear they might try to strike Beacon first, but not before sending someone undercover to see if they can't get their hands on others."
"Ozpin. That's a very big claim. Do you even have any evidence, any at all, to support this?"
"No. I just have a strong feeling that's what's happening or will happen soon. And we need to prepare."
"Ozpin. We can't simply go on a feeling. We need at least a hunch with some evidence, even shaky evidence, to do something. And this is coming from the group that uses the supermarket tabloids as hot sheets."
"I know we need more than just a feeling. But there-"
"Not to mention, we neurolyse everyone who has come into contact with an alien, has seen an alien, and has been directly or indirectly involved with an alien. Plus, we make sure that there is no evidence left behind. And that's not even including all the counters we have in place should one slip by."
"True. Your organization is extremely thorough." Ozpin said, gazing at the empty schoolyard and the Emerald Forest.
Despite having the students live at the academy for the duration of their studies, nearly all of them leave during the summer. But that simply allowed him and the rest of the faculty to prepare for the next batch of huntsmen-in-training. However, the Emerald Forest was a different story. It was still full of various Grimm. But Ozpin feared it might change for the worse. Yet, he still hoped one day, this school would cease teaching kids how to fight monsters and instead live out their lives. Unfortunately, they were a long way from achieving that goal.
"We have to be if we want this planet to keep on spinning."
"Still. I feel like-"
"We also closely monitor all comings and goings from this planet. Not only that, we also monitor where and when a visitor can live and go. We also have systems in place for unauthorized landings/entries and leavings."
"I know. But I really feel like Salem is plotting something and would begin in the school. We need-"
"Ozma." Zed said, catching Ozpin off guard. Despite keeping it a very closely guarded secret, Ozpin did have a few people he trusted to know who he really was and the true history behind many things that happened on Remnant. Granted, some of the stuff Zed knew he did not tell him. But Ozpin chalked it up to the creatures he handles, giving him that information. With a heavy sigh, Ozpin sat in his chair and took a slow, long sip of his chocolate drink.
"Yes, Zed."
"Ozma." Zed said, clasping his hands and placing them on the desk. "We both know this war is not between the Grimm and the Huntsmen. It is a battle between two past lovers. And those lovers are you and your wife. You don't need to keep acting like it is a war with both sides targeting everyone."
"I know. But still-"
"I know that you are still in love with her. But we both know that you could have ended this war long."
"Yes. Several opportunities have presented themselves over the years. Granted, the last one was roughly sixty years ago."
"Yet, you chose to ignore all of them, not because you wanted the war to continue, but because you did not want to kill Salem. You miss her. And you want her back."
"Yes. I am tired of this feud, as it has gone on for so long. But I don't want to kill her. I want my wife by my side again. I want to embrace her and tell her that I am sorry for everything and that everything will be okay. But I don't know how to do it."
"It is not easy, especially considering how her curse was placed by the Brothers above. Then there's the whole thing with Salem being corrupted after diving into a Grimm pool in a futile attempt to free herself. While the easy answer to ridding some of the problems would be magic, there's hardly any left since the Brothers took them away when they left."
"Unfortunately. Even though I don't remember it exactly, I do recall seeing some books containing spells that would have answered a lot of our problems. But since we don't have access to magic, they would be worthless even if we still had them. Now, only Salem has magic. Thankfully, they are barely more powerful than some semblances."
"Well, outside of creating more types of Grimm."
"True. But that's more for us, other huntsmen, and Remnant's military. I'm positive that you and your organization have faced down, dealt with, and have even used far superior weaponry."
"Yeah. As we have learned, quite painfully, I might add, there are weapons out there that could easily wipe us and all of Remnant out in a snap." Zed said while snapping his fingers to emphasize the point. "And we have also learned that size never determines the power of a gun."
"Which is why Remnant and I owe you and your group a debt of gratitude, even though no one knows you exist." Ozpin said, causing them to let out a chuckle.
"It is a thankless, messy job. But someone has got to do it."
"But we digress. I still fear that Salem might be up to something. I fear that she might be allying with or after some aliens, considering what her followers had stolen. And the fact that Arthur and Watts are now working with her further supports this. Plus, since we are enemies, she might first start here at Beacon, with the Vytel Festival down the line providing her even more opportunities to strike. We can't-"
"Ozma. You're letting your fears and emotions cloud your mind and judgment." Zed interrupted in a soft tone. Ozpin sighed and took another sip of his drink as he knew his long-time friend was right. Even though he prided himself on having a level head most of the time, Ozpin was more than willing to admit that that wasn't always the case. He sometimes lets his emotions cloud his judgment, which has led to disastrous consequences before.
"You're right. I'm letting my worries get a hold of me." Ozpin said, rubbing his forehead.
"Having worries is not a bad thing, Ozma. It's alright to worry about the people you care about, especially when they are in potential danger. But if you let it cloud your judgment, you will just put them in more danger and imagine threats that aren't there."
"You're right, Zed. I just worry about everyone since I don't want any more needless deaths because of our conflict."
"No one does, Ozma. No one does. Don't beat yourself up over it."
"But still. I feel like we should do something. Even if Salem doesn't know about the outside life and isn't plotting something with or against them, doing something is better than doing nothing. And I still feel like they might send someone to the school for a variety of different possible reasons."
"On that, we agree on, old friend. Something is always better than nothing." Zed said. "But the question is. What do you want to do? And where do we come in?"
"As I said earlier, I feel like Salem might send one or a few of her followers here as undercover agents. And possibly even more or make a big play when the Vytal Festival rolls around. Not to mention, our otherworldly guests who live and walk among us. I do not wish to see them harmed since, despite our differences, most are harmless and are simply trying to live out their lives. There are some that I believe were even Haven Academy students. However, like our enemies, not all of them have pure intentions. As such, I feel like it is in the students' and school's best interest that we have someone nearby to act should something happen."
"A closer eye does help. That's why I had numerous agents stick near certain areas to act as first responders." Zed agreed, remembering how some agents that were stationed nearby managed to control or de-escalate a situation before it got out of hand. While cameras and other equipment would help them spot and react quickly to a problem, it would still take time for the agents to arrive.
"That's why I believe what I'm about to ask of you, Zed, is the best decision going forward. I want to know if you would be willing to assign one of your agents here to act not only as security but to act as our eyes and ears for the other side. Regardless of whether Salem is planning something with the aliens or not, having one here would be beneficial. But, even though Salem is my primary concern, some aliens might also prove hostile toward the staff and students. So, having one here would put a stop to that before it even happens. Yet, even if it doesn't happen, better safe than sorry."
"Now you're thinking like the headmaster that Remnant has come to know you as." Zed said, smiling. He then lifted and placed his case on the desk.
"What are you taking out, Zed?" Ozpin asked, curious.
"I figured you might ask me to have an agent be stationed here. So, I took the liberty of compiling some agent's profiles for you to look over and take your pick." Zed said before handing Ozpin the files. "Take your pick and ask any questions you might have."
"Alright." Ozpin said, taking the files and placing them on his desk. He then picked up the top one and opened it to reveal the files and a photo of a middle-aged owl faunus woman. "Agent Lilac."
"Agent Lilac. She's thirty-seven years old and has worked for us for the past ten years. But don't let her age or the fact that she is an owl faunus fool you. Agent Lilac has the strength of a slugger in boxing and the agility of an Olympic gymnast. Her owl traits allow her to have better vision and can see in the dark as if it was dimly lit."
"Interesting. But I feel like there is a catch to it."
"Yes. She is blunt. And I do mean blunt. She will say how it is no matter who she is talking to or what the situation is. Agent Lilac also doesn't hold back when it comes to fighting. She will go all out no matter who her opponent is, with only a few exceptions. But I don't think that is too much of a con since this is a school for future huntsmen."
"Not really. But I have a feeling that she might start more fights than the students will. Yet she could be an excellent guard for when the Vytal Festival rolls around."
"That is true. I planned on having guard there during the celebration anyway." Zed as Ozpin closed Lilac's file and moved to the next one. This one had a picture of a slim male.
"Agent Morado."
"Agent Morado. He is charismatic and has a way with words. He is forty-three years old. Morado also has a pretty good memory, which is why we typically have him teach some history to the new recruits and do a lot of the paperwork that requires remembering the finer details. However, he is not that well-suited for fieldwork. But he can hold his own in a gunfight until backup arrives."
"Hmm. I possibly won't pick him." Ozpin said as he closed the file and moved on to the next one. Opening it up, Ozpin saw that the next candidate was a human female. But as opposed to the previous one, who had an impassive face, this one was smiling. And she had numerous grease stains on her face. "Agent Amethyst."
"Agent Amethyst. She is a spunky one she is." Zed said, chuckling.
"How so?" Ozpin asked, curious, as he looked over her profile.
"She is twenty-seven. Amethyst is clever and upbeat, always trying to keep the mood up. She is also a pretty smart mechanic, with eleven hard PhDs backing it up. Amethyst can fix nearly any vehicle, gun, or machine we have. She loves working on them."
"But."
"But Amethyst is also very impatient. She does not like being idle. If she doesn't have something to do, she will find something to do. While to some, this might not be a con, it can be an inconvenience."
"Hmm. Maybe. I might choose her. And even if I don't, I might hire her personally as part of Beacon's staff. There's so much that needs fixing or updating. But we don't have the budget to do so. And it's not helped that the students sometimes break things."
"Sometimes?" Zed asked, chuckling.
"Okay. All the time." Ozpin said, also chuckling as he closed the file and moved on to the next one. However, he instantly became confused by what he saw. Unlike the other ones, which only had a first name, this one had a first and last name. Yet, what stood out the most, and immediately, was how young the agent was. While the others were at least adults, this one was a teen who could pass off as a student. "Agent Jaune Arc?"
"Whoops. I must have picked up his file by accident." Zed said, surprised. He then reached forward to get it. But to his confusion, Ozpin instead placed it on his desk for the both of them to see.
"I did not know your organization recruited people from a young age, Zed."
"We don't, Ozpin. We recruit adults. And while age isn't the highest priority of requirements, we typically try not to pick candidates that are younger than twenty-five. Agent Jaune is the exception, not the norm."
"At what age did he... join the organization?"
"Well, that's a whole story behind that. But Jaune was... brought into the organization when he was roughly six for several reasons. Now, he is seventeen and has recently become an official agent. However, Jaune is still a rookie and is being trained."
"What made you bring him in any way? There has to be a reason. Neglectful or abusive parents? Is he an orphan? Did his village or town burn down? Was there a dictator who ruled over his town and oppressed everyone? Is he trying to pay back his family's debt? Did he lose something or someone important? Is he trying to avenge someone or something?"
"You've been watching too many animes, Ozpin." Zed said, laughing. "Not everything or everyone has to have a tragic backstory."
"You're right. I have been watching way too much of that with the others. We should really change it to anything else." Ozpin sighed. "But still. So, nothing tragic happened?"
"Nope. Well, one of his friends was an alien who had moved away. But that's about it. Agent Jaune had a pretty happy, albeit strange, life. Heck, his parents are actually retired MIB agents."
"Do they know about this? And do they still know about the organization?"
"No. They don't know. Agents that retire are neuralyzed. This is so they can have a peaceful retirement without having hundreds, if not thousands, of horrible memories nobody wants to have."
"Alright. So, what really made you recruit him?"
"A couple of reasons. The first is how well he got along with aliens and never minded them for being different."
"Isn't that... or shouldn't that be the case with your agents?" Ozpin asked, confused.
"Well, yes and no. We try to be friendly but neutral at the same time. But bias still exists. And there is the occasional time we have to reprimand an agent for being unnecessarily hostile toward an alien and/or letting their bias influence how they act or determine their decisions. However, with Jaune, that doesn't exist. He's pretty friendly and open-minded toward all of them. Granted, that's partly because his hometown's population is forty percent aliens."
"Did he know they were aliens?"
"Not initially. It wasn't until after we brought him in that he learned that. Yet, it didn't change how he viewed them. He still has some outside friends who are aliens. Jaune even befriended some aliens who work for us rather quickly. Well, all except the worms since they can annoy pretty much everyone. Sometimes, I wonder why we even have them around."
"What else can you tell me about him?" Ozpin asked, curious as numerous ideas raced through his mind.
"Honestly, not much. Well, there is stuff that I can actually tell you that isn't confidential. But there isn't really anything about him that's noteworthy. Then again, Jaune is still a rookie, so that could change in the future."
"Does he have any combat experience? And how fast does he learn or adjust to things?"
"In melee and fist fighting, Jaune is below average. He can barely hold his own against an ordinary person. But he would be doomed if he fought someone like a huntsmen or a military person. Then again, he chose to take those classes later. However, his marksmanship is also something. Jaune is above average when it comes to using alien guns. He has great aim and knows how to handle most of them."
"What about guns from Remnant?"
"That depends. Guns like a pistol or rifle, Jaune knows how to use. But when it comes to hybrid guns, he does not have any idea how to use them."
"Hmmm. Has he ever led a group or has any leadership experience?"
"He led one supervised mission. But that's about it. However, he will take some leadership classes later on as part of his training."
"What were you are some of his weaknesses? Or at least places he struggles with."
"This is starting to feel like an interview for him, Ozpin. But either way. There is one thing that we are still working with him on."
"Which is?"
"He is extremely socially awkward. It is honestly impressive."
"Alright. But aside from that?"
"Nothing really comes to mind outside of a few things that come with the territory of being a rookie. Oh, he does have some medical experience, enough to act as a temporary helper until more professional help arrives. "
"Okay. I think I will choose Agent Jaune Arc." Ozpin said, surprising Zed.
"Are you sure about that, Ozpin?"
"Yes."
"Wouldn't it be better if you picked one of the other three? Or even look at the other files I have. They are all more experienced than Jaune and would provide additional benefits. Agent Lilac can act as security and help break up fights. Agent Morado can help with the paperwork, which Glynda would love, and even take over one of the classes so the other faculty aren't burdened. And Agent Amethyst can help repair part of the school. They all bring something to the table, whereas Jaune does not. At least not yet."
"I know, Zed. The others seem better in many ways. However, I think it would put off Salem or raise some flags from others if I suddenly hired new staff out of nowhere in the middle of summer vacation. But with Jaune, he could easily pass off as a student with no one batting an eye."
"Yes, he could, except that he has zero qualifications for being a huntsman-in-training. While he does have his aura unlocked, he hasn't discovered his semblance yet. Plus, he grew up with us, the MIB, who have vastly different lifestyles and cultural norms. Not to mention, as I said, Jaune is very socially awkward. And good luck trying to establish a schedule with him since he got used to being on Centaurian Time."
"Which I am still surprised how many of your people got used to it so quickly."
"Well, it took them a few months or up to a year to get used to it. And some did have a psychotic episode."
"Still. I believe that Jaune would be our best option. Yes, the others are more experienced and do have other skill sets. But what good would it be if they were quickly found out? With Jaune, no one would think twice or even suspect a socially awkward teen as the agent. However, I won't throw him into the lion's den. I will assign him to a team with members that would best suit him."
"I knew those team formations were never random."
"No. We pair students with others whom we think they will benefit from. The only time it was random was the first year this school was open. But after that, it changed."
"And for the better, I'll say."
"Anyway. I'll place him on a team with three others that I feel will greatly benefit him. But if it gets too dangerous, I will send him back, and we will act like this never happened."
"I still don't like this and would prefer you choose one of the others, Ozpin. But you're right. The others would be the first ones suspected. And it would also give Jaune a chance to socialize with other humans and faunus his own age." Zed said, thinking it over before sighing. "Alright. You have a deal, Ozpin. I shall inform Jaune about this and have him get ready for the mission. Just do what you say, place him on a good team, and send him back if it gets too dangerous."
"I will, old friend. Don't you worry." Ozpin assured.
"Alright. Is there anything else we need to go over?"
"Yes. A few things. And that includes setting up what's needed for your agent to attend Beacon and not raise any suspicion."
"Okay. What is that?" Zed asked.
"First. We need to know where we could send him should it get too dangerous or if our fears come true and Salem or an unfriendly guest tries to hunt him down."
"That's relatively simple." Zed said as they began discussing everything they needed to know.
Four Hours Later
"Alright. Easy. Easy on the pedal. That's it. Now park in front of the base." Agent J instructed.
"Okay." Jaune breathed out as he did his best to park in front of the base. Turning to get a better view, Jaune changed the gear shift to reverse and slowly went back into the space without any problem. He then shifted back into drive and adjusted the car into the space. Once done, Jaune put the car into park and turned it off.
"That's good. You're getting better at this, Jaune."
"Thanks, J."
"Pretty soon, you'll have your driver's license and MIB car."
"Hopefully."
"Then we can start your flight control lessons. 'Cause you're going to need it in some missions or when chasing some aliens."
"When can you show the red button?" Jaune asked, smirking.
"No. I'm not going to show you the red button for a while. And when I do, I will be wearing a full protection suit while we are in the middle of nowhere."
"Sure." Jaune said, rolling his eyes as they unbuckled their belts before exiting the car and adjusting their suits. "So, what now?"
"I need to head out soon on my patrol with K. Your shift is over for the day. So you can do what you want."
"Alright."
Closing the doors, Jaune went around the car to the sidewalk and tossed the keys to J. They then walked up to the building and entered. And in movement that was practically a habit at this point, Jaune and J nodded to the guard who was reading his ever-present newspaper. They entered the elevator and pressed the button that would take them to the lower floors. After a few moments, the doors opened, with Agent J and Jaune stepping out. They nodded at each other before going their separate ways.
'I still can't believe I'm a part of the MiB. It's definitely something. Who would have thought that there are millions of other species out there? It kind of makes me feel small. Then again, we are small to some, with a few species thinking of us as nothing more than a disease.' Jaune thought as he headed to the locker room to get changed and then head to his MiB-sanctioned home. Even though he was just a rookie and had much lighter work than other agents, it was still exhausting. And Jaune was looking forward to some downtime and possibly even getting the new X-Ray and Vav comics that came out. 'Maybe I can stop by a restaurant and get something to eat.'
"Agent Jaune. Please report to Zed's office immediately."
'Well, there goes that idea.' Jaune thought with a sigh.
Sighing, Jaune changed his route and headed to the second floor. He then went down the walkway that would take him to Zed's office. And to this day, Jaune wondered why Zed chose a pod as his office and had it on the main floor. But he just surmised it as Zed wanting to keep an eye on things. Once he reached there, Jaune knocked on the door and waited a moment.
"Come in." Zed shouted. Breathing out, Jaune grabbed the door's handle and opened the door before stepping into the office.
"You wanted to see me, Zed?" Jaune asked.
"Yes. I need to discuss something with you. Please, take a seat."
"Alright." Jaune said as he closed the door before moving to sit in the chair across from Zed. "So... what do you want to talk about?"
"Well, first. I want to congratulate you on passing the MiB exam. You are now officially an agent. But since we already have several agents whose names begin with the letter J, you will keep your full first name."
"Thank you so much, Zed." Jaune said, ecstatic. However, he then became worried. "But what about the other part?"
"Don't worry. Your family is safe and will receive some payment for the foreseeable future. But you do know that since you're now an agent, all ties will be severed."
"Yes. I do."
"Alright. And thanks, Zed." Jaune said, relieved yet torn. While it did pain him that he was essentially a stranger to his family now, Jaune did take comfort in the fact that they would never have to struggle or worry about lien again.
"You're welcome, Agent Jaune."
"So... was that it?"
"No. While you might now be an Agent, you are still a rookie. However, despite this, I already have an assignment for you." Zed answered, surprising Jaune.
"Really?" Jaune asked, shocked. Yet, he was secretly excited at being able to go on his first actual assignment as an official Agent. And even though Jaune knew he would have J, K, or some other agent supervise him, he did not mind.
"Don't get too excited, Jaune. It's not that exciting. But it is important."
"Right." Jaune said, composing himself. "What is it?"
"As you already know, our primary mission is to ensure Remnant keeps on spinning by keeping the peace between aliens and the people of Remnant. And that generally means keeping the people of Remnant in the dark about the aliens and mind-wiping anyone who discovers them."
"Of course. But we also protect both sides from each other and stop criminals in general. Although, it's mainly alien criminals and not criminals from Remnant."
"That is true. However, despite our goals of keeping all of this anonymous, there are a select few people outside of MiB that we allow to know about the existence of aliens and the MiB."
"Isn't that against regulations and the rules?" Jaune asked, confused.
"Yes. We try to make it so that only MiB personnel know about them and keep the organization a secret. However, circumstantial events in the past have made us rethink to allow specific people under very specific circumstances to know about our outside visitors. And the primary reason is that they would provide significant benefits to us that we can't normally or as easily obtain through our usual means. Or, at the very least, as quickly."
"Makes sense." Jaune said, thinking it over. While the rulebook did say that only MiB personnel can know about the existence of aliens and that the organization should remain a secret from the public, if that person can provide such a great benefit, then it would make some sense to let them know, and not wipe their memory. Yet, Jaune could not even begin to imagine the criteria that must be met for Zed to allow that. "So, what am I supposed to do? Are you going to make me meet one of them?"
"In a sense. You see, despite our best efforts, there will always be the occasional group of people who discover the existence of aliens. And it is almost always the wrong kind of people. Usually, it's the kind of people that would seek to harm or kill the aliens to see if they could gain some sort of benefit from them. While we know who they might be, we're not one hundred percent sure if they actually know about the existence of aliens."
"So, you want me to go undercover or something to see if they know about them or not? Wouldn't that be an assignment for one of the more experienced agents?"
"Yes and no. While we know who the group is, it would be pointless to send someone undercover to them since they would immediately know. Plus, if they don't know and we send them, they would get very suspicious and try to find out who sent the agent, which we don't need."
"So what are we going to be doing?"
"While we don't know if they know about the existence of aliens, we do know who they are and where they might strike first. I want you to go there, undercover, and see what you can find out about them. But you are not to engage or confront them. Just see what you can find out about them and report back to us. That's it."
"Alright. Where exactly are you sending me?"
"We're sending to Beacon Academy."
"Beacon... Academy? Isn't that the prestigious school for future huntsmen to fight against the Grimm?"
"That's right."
"Uh, no offense, Zed. But did you forget that I have no combat experience outside of firing guns? Most huntsmen and huntsmen-in-training know how to fight in melee and guns. So, they would wipe the floor with me. I wouldn't last ten seconds if I got in a fight with them."
"I didn't forget. I know that. But that's where our contact comes into play."
"Our contact?"
"Yes. The headmaster of Beacon Academy, Ozpin, is the contact and one of the few people allowed to know of the existence of aliens and the MiB. He knows of your lack of combat experience. As such, he will place you on a team where the other members will unknowingly help keep up the ruse but also help you get through the school year."
"Alright. But still. Wouldn't someone with more experience be better suited for an assignment like this?"
"In some ways, yes. I even told Ozpin about this. However, he did bring up a good point." Zed sighed.
"What is it?"
"The people we're looking into aren't dumb. They would know something is up if Ozpin, out of nowhere, suddenly hired someone. But a student, even one that is unprepared, wouldn't. That's why we're sending you."
"That... makes some sense. But let me see if I got everything. You want me to go undercover at Beacon Academy and gather as much information as I can about this group to see if they know about the existence of aliens and report it back to you."
"Yes. That's pretty much it. But don't let that distract you from your other duties. Ozpin believes that only a handful of aliens have ever been to a huntsmen academy, which is true. And I intend to keep it that way. However, we have reports that other aliens have tried to get into Beacon, with some succeeding despite not having permission to do so. I want you to find them and tag them so we can take them away. But be careful; not all of them will go willingly, and some might attack you once they realize what you are doing. And that includes outside ones, as some have been spotted near the school. Also, try not to let anyone but Ozpin see this."
"Okay. I'm not looking forward to going back to school, but alright."
"Good. Any questions?"
"Yes."
"What are they?"
"How long is the assignment? Will it be a year, the whole four years, or until I get enough information?"
"It will only be for the year. But if you manage to get enough information, then it will be shorter."
"Will I need to meet up with the headmaster when I arrive, or should I steer clear?"
"Once you arrive, the vice-headmistress, Glynda Goodwitch, will be waiting to take you to the headmaster's office, where he will tell you the rest. But do keep in mind that despite being the vice-headmistress and a personal friend of Ozpin, Glynda has no idea this is happening or that we even exist."
"Okay. Will I be needing to go back to a regular... schedule, or am I to stay on Centaurian time?"
"You're going to stay on Centaurian time. Ozpin knows about this and will give you a pass that will allow you to stay up past curfew and leave the Academy. This will also allow you to head into town to continue your training and perform any other duties/tasks you have."
"Alright. I'm probably going to need to make up an excuse to tell my teammates so they don't get suspicious and follow me. Well, that is if they care enough."
"Anything else?"
"No. Not really, aside from when do I start?"
"Next month. Currently, it is summer vacation for them."
"But what... or rather, who should I go as?"
"Yourself since you technically no longer exist, with no one having any memory of you. And that will include your family in a few hours. The only change I would recommend is saying that you're from a small farm town and that you wanted to become a huntsman your whole life against your family's wishes. But you might want to come up with a few different things to fall back on should they arise. And you may want to write them down so you can remember them and not contradict yourself."
"Alright." Jaune said, happy that he got his first actual assignment. Yet, he wasn't thrilled that it was going undercover at a school for future huntsmen. He was already bullied in high school and didn't feel like repeating it so soon. And Jaune definitely didn't want to experience it with huntsmen-in-training who might use their weapons on him.
"You best start preparing, Jaune. It's going to be a long one. You're dismissed. Enjoy the rest of your day." Zed said before turning to his computer screen and typing away.
"Same to you." Jaune said as he got up and left the office. But as soon as he closed the door, he let out a long sigh. "Well, I did always want my own assignment. And my parents did always wanted me to go to college. But I don't think this is what they had in mind. *Sigh* This is so not going to end well."
Two Weeks Later
Zed's Office
Five A.M.
"Okay. Are you ready, Jaune?" Zed asked.
"More than I will ever be." Jaune nervously answered. However, his nervousness did not come from the mission itself, as he was calm about that. Jaune was just not looking forward to the bullying and being shunned for being socially awkward. And it did not help that he hardly had any human/faunus friends in his entire life.
"Now. Before you leave, there are some things you will need. And some that you have earned by officially becoming a member." Zed said before opening a drawer in his desk. He then pulled out several things. "You'll need these to make the job easier."
"Okay." Jaune said as he looked over the items. The first was the MIB Standard Issue Sidearm with a few spare batteries. The second was the universal translator/communicator and identifier, which Jaune knew he would be using a lot. The third item he was confused about. Picking it up, Jaune examined it. It resembled a monocle, except it was slightly thick and could expand and contract. "What's this?"
"That's to determine if any humans/faunus you see are actually aliens in disguise. It will see past the disguise or just tell you if it is a human or faunus. You're going to need it since most disguises will fool the identifier. Luckily, both are linked, so as soon as you spot one in disguise, the optic will send the information to the identifier to tell you what species it is."
"Alright." Jaune said as he placed the identifier and optic in his pocket. He then holstered the gun into the holster strapped to his calf, which was concealed by his jeans. Typically, he and all the other agents had to adhere to the strict dress code and wear their suits. However, since he was going undercover, Jaune had to wear civilian clothes. But he didn't mind since the suits sometimes got uncomfortable, especially when it got hot. Standing back up, Jaune picked up the next item. "Sunglasses?"
"Yup. We don't typically give these to rookies until they have at least a few months under their belts. But you have been with us for a while, and you're probably going to need it. So, I am giving you a Neuralyzer."
"Woah." Jaune said, surprised, as he took the metal cylinder from Zed. Even though he had never used one before, Jaune had seen J and K use it countless times. He always wanted one. Yet, Jaune knew how dangerous they could be. So he carefully placed it in the secret compartment of his bag before zipping it up.
"Remember. Always point it forward. Now, this is the last item you might need. While the J2 will provide enough firepower, some situations might require more. So you will need this." Zed said before placing a silencer on the table.
"A silencer? Why... wait." Jaune began, but he stopped when he realized what it was for. "You're giving me the Noisy Cricket again, aren't you?"
"Yes. It will help you in some sticky situations. And it can destroy most Grimm in a single shot."
"Are you sure just don't want to see me get sent flying back when I fire the Noisy Cricket?"
"You have to admit. Seeing you fly back and hit several training drones and two other agents was funny." Zed said, chuckling.
"Funny for you, maybe, but not for the one firing this thing. I just don't feel like getting flung off a building or bridge... or somewhere high up. Or even into oncoming traffic."
"Don't worry. With enough practice, you'll get the hang of it and not get sent flying back. But in the meantime, this silencer should nullify the kickback."
"Alright." Jaune said as he pocketed the Noisy Cricket and placed the silencer in the backpack.
"Now, you remember the mission, right?"
"Yes. I am to go undercover and gather information about this group of people to see if they know about the existence of aliens or not. And to keep on the lookout for any aliens that are breaking their guidelines."
"Right. Good luck out there, Jaune. And don't forget about your patrol later tonight." Zed said.
"Thanks, Zed." Jaune said before grabbing his backpack and exiting the office.
Sighing, Jaune headed to the elevators and got in. He then pressed the first-floor button, with the doors closing a second later. Soon, it reached the first floor, with Jaune stepping out. He then nodded at the guard before leaving the building. But to Jaune's surprise, Agent J was there waiting for him.
"Hey, kid. I heard you got your first mission by yourself." Agent J said, smiling.
"Yup. I'm on my way there now."
"Excited?"
"Yes and no."
"I can imagine. Don't worry. You'll do fine. Now, hop on in. Zed told me to give you a ride to the bullheads."
"Can I drive?"
"Yeah, no. Only I get to drive the new hotness."
"I still can't believe you called it that." Jaune said, chuckling.
"You say that now. But I'll be waiting for when you name your car." Rolling his eyes, Jaune walked up to the car and got in while Agent J got on the driver's side.
"Hey, kid." A voice said. Turning around, Jaune smiled when he saw a familiar face. Even though he made a lot of friends, both humans/faunus and aliens, while working at MiB, there were some whom he was closer with than others. Agent J, at times, felt like that fun uncle who would let you get away with far more than you should, while Agent K was the strict one. Agent Amethyst, on the other hand, felt like the older sister he could always turn to when he needed help with something personal. And Jaune was especially glad it was like that since he 'technically' no longer had any sisters since he no longer 'technically' exists.
"Hey, Agent Amethyst." Jaune said, smiling. "What are you doing here?"
"Heading to Beacon, same as you. But for a different reason." Agent Amethyst answered.
"What is your reason, Jaune?" Agent J asked as he pulled out and began driving to the bullheads.
"Go undercover at Beacon. There's a chance that some unauthorized people know about extraterrestrials and might be trying something. Zed thinks they will strike at Beacon first. So, I am to go there, and see if that is true. But I also have to see if there are any aliens breaking their guidelines and send them back."
"Woah. Talk about a big assignment." Agent Amethyst said, chuckling.
"How long do you think it will last?" Agent J asked.
"Zed told me it will last either until the end of the first year or until I gather enough information." Jaune answered. "But... uh... any tips on how to remain undercover and not get exposed?"
"Sorry, I can't help you there since that is not my strong suit." Agent Amethyst answered.
"Patience isn't your strong suit, Agent Amethyst." J said, causing Agent Amethyst to stick out her tongue at him. Despite being in the MiB for a while, she had never lost her sense of humor. "But anyway. I haven't done too many missions like that. But the best advice I can give you is to pick a personality and stick with it. Then, at the end of the day, write down everything you can remember about yourself that you showed/told others. That way, you have a list you can go back to so you won't contradict yourself down the road and expose yourself because of it."
"Alright. Thanks." Jaune said, glad he had the foresight to buy an additional journal.
"But since you're going to school, why not try your hand at dating? Who knows, you might end up with a nice girl." Agent Amethyst said, smirking.
"Yeah, no."
"Come on, Jaune. Just try. And if you want, I could give you some tips." Agent J said, chuckling.
"Again, no. I don't feel like casting my net out... or however that saying goes. Plus, I doubt anyone would want to date someone like me. Not to mention, this assignment probably won't last more than two months." Jaune said, causing the others to roll their eyes.
"Sure." Agent Amethyst said, shaking her head.
"We'll see about that." Agent J said, chuckling.
Two Hours Later
'Damn it. Why is there no cure for motion sickness?!' Jaune mentally screamed as he vomited into a trash can.
"So, this is Beacon Academy?" Agent Amethyst asked as she admired the building. But she did have to move quite a bit to avoid getting bumped into by the students.
"Apparently." Jaune said as he wiped his mouth clean.
"Not as magnificent as I thought it would be. Then again, I'm more used to seeing alien technology and other things."
"True. They really have some impressive designs."
"So... are we supposed to head on in or wait for someone?"
"Zed told me that the vice-headmistress would be here waiting for me to take me to the headmaster. Perhaps she's also going to take you there."
"Probably. And maybe she's just running a bit late because of all these students."
"Probably." Jaune said as they looked around while ignoring the strange looks thrown their way.
"Excuse me. Are you Jaune Arc? And are you Amethyst from Solaris Repair Co.?" A voice asked. Turning to it, the duo saw the vice-headmistress approaching them.
"Yes. We are." Agent Amethyst answered.
"And you are the vice-headmistress of Beacon Academy, Ms. Goodwitch?" Jaune nervously asked when her stern gaze fell on him.
"Yes, I am." Glynda answered. And it was only then that Jaune realized she was not staring at him but at others behind him. "Please follow me to the Headmaster's office. He is expecting both of you. And do watch your step. Some students severely lack self-control and discipline."
Nodding, Jaune and Agent Amethyst followed Glynda through the crowded schoolyard and into the academy. However, they did tense when they heard a loud explosion. Looking toward where it came from, they wondered why there was suddenly a large crater. But they got their answer when they spotted a white-haired girl walking away with her nose held up high as if recently insulted while carrying a vial of red dust. Yet, judging from the sigh that came from Glynda, they knew this must be a regular occurrence.
'This might be more painful than I initially thought. Thank Oum, I have my aura unlocked. Although, I'm not sure how useful it will be.' Jaune thought as he and Agent Amethyst resumed following Glynda to Ozpin's office.
Ten Minutes Later
"Here we are." Glynda said as they arrived. She then opened the door and ushered them in. "Headmaster. I have brought the student and guest as you requested."
"Ah. Thank you, Glynda." Ozpin said, smiling. "You must be, Jaune Arc. One of the incoming students."
"Yes, sir. That is me." Jaune said, remembering some of the details that Zed told him earlier.
"And you must be Amethyst from Solaris Repair Co."
"Yes, sir. What do you need fixing?" Agent Amethyst asked.
"A lot." Glynda muttered from behind them.
"Plenty. A lot of the systems that run throughout the school are in dire need of repair or updating. But my main concern is the systems in the back of the school. They seem to be on the verge of failure. Do you think you can fix them?"
"Of course."
"Good. Glynda will show you where they are."
"Follow me, Amethyst." Glynda said. Nodding, Agent Amethyst exited the room and followed Glynda. But as soon as the door closed, Jaune turned to the headmaster, who motioned for him to take a seat.
"So... you're the contact Zed told me to meet; who will fill me in on the rest, right?" Jaune asked as he sat down.
"That's right. You can call me Ozpin when we are alone. However, to keep up this ruse, you must call me headmaster when in the presence of others." Ozpin said.
"Alright. So... what else do I need to know?"
"Not a lot. Zed probably told you most of what you need to know. But I would like to go over a few things and possibly add something to your cover story."
"Alright." Jaune said, getting comfy.
"First, do you have any weapons on you that I should know about, specifically ones from MiB."
"Yes. I have a few standard MiB weapons on me."
"And I take it you have been trained on how to handle them and weapon safety, right?"
"Yes, Ozpin. I have been trained on how to handle them."
"Good. But Zed said you have nearly no combat experience when it comes to hand-to-hand fighting or melee fighting, right? And you don't have any weapons native to Remnant on you."
"Well, that's a compliment, Ozpin. I have next to no experience in that area. Anyone who's trained can defeat me. And yes. I don't have any weapons native to Remnant on me."
"Alright. Maybe your skill level could change over time. However, I feel like we could implement this into your cover story."
"How so?"
"First, I have a few weapons in storage that you could borrow for your duration here. But some of them have a symbol on them. If you choose one that has it, you will need to come up with a story behind it."
"Alright."
"As for the rest of your cover story, Zed said that you came from a small farm town with a family that did not want you to become a huntsman, am I right?"
"Yes."
"Next. To account for your lack of fighting skills, we will have it that because your family did not want you to become a huntsman, they refused to train you or to let anyone else train you. But, because becoming a huntsman was your dream, you decided to attend Beacon against your parents' wishes and used forged transcripts to get in."
"Alright. That sounds... about right and not suspicious."
"But if anyone asks, say you were trained by a private huntsman who is currently retired."
"Okay."
"Now, while that is your cover story, let's go over your fighting skills. As you said, you have none. And while aura can be helpful, it won't protect you against everything or make attacks painless. As such, I will place you on a team with teammates that I feel could help you. And I will also be giving you an additional combat class that will teach you the basics of whatever weapon you choose."
"Wait. I thought the teams were random."
"Zed thought the same. But no. We pair students with others that we think will benefit them. It is not random at all."
"That's a surprise, but it makes sense. Anything else?"
"Yes. Your pass. Because everyone is on Remnant's time, and you are on Centaurian Time, this will allow you to stay up past curfew and leave whenever you want to perform your other duties. But try not to be seen, as it will just cause us both headaches." Ozpin said as he handed Jaune the card.
"True." Jaune said as he took the pass and pocketed it.
"Now, all that is left is to pick out your weapon. Follow me." Ozpin said, standing up.
Nodding, Jaune stood up and followed Ozpin out of his office. They then made their way through the school to where Jaune could only presume was Ozpin's private weapons closet. But as they made their way there, Jaune tried his best to memorize the layout of the school since he did not want to get lost. Yet, he also made note of several locations that he could use to pull over an alien who was breaking their guidelines. After about twenty minutes of walking and reminding himself to head to the gym to get in better shape, they finally arrived.
"We're here." Ozpin said as he unlocked and opened the door to his weapon's closest. "Take your pick."
"Alright." Jaune said as he entered the room and looked around. From a quick look around, Jaune knew there had to be at least a hundred different weapons. And most of them were hybrid weapons. While Jaune thought about taking one, he knew it would be pointless since his MiB weapons were superior guns. Plus, he would be returning them within a couple of months. So, the best option in his mind would be something that was only melee. And after a couple of minutes, he found it. "I think I will take this."
"Alright. You can't get any more classic than a sword and shield. And the shield can transform into a scabbard for easier carrying."
"Does it change the weight?"
"No. But that would have been useful. Also, this is one of the weapons that have a crest, which is a double yellow moon. So, you'll need to incorporate the meaning behind it into your cover story."
"Right." Jaune said as he found the button to transform the shield into a scabbard. He then put the sword into it before attaching it to his hip. "Is that it?"
"Yes. For now, I would say that is it. But if anything new comes up, I'll inform you as soon as possible." Ozpin answered.
"Okay. But uh... where do I go now?"
"It is only nine-forty. The orientation will not start for another eight hours as we are waiting for the rest of the students to arrive. So, you have to look around before it begins."
"Okay. Where is it being held, though? And are there any other initiation things that I need to be aware of?"
"Yes. The initiation will take place in the auditorium. But it should last only about a half hour. Afterward, all the incoming first-year students, which includes you, will sleep in the auditorium for the night. Then, tomorrow, everyone will meet up at the cliff overlooking the Emerald Forest. There, the next part of the initiation will begin."
"And what's that?" Jaune nervously asked as he did not want a repeat of what happened at MiB with the Noisy Cricket.
"We call it the cadet trials. Essentially, we have all the students line up on the Beacon Cliff and launch them into the Emerald Forest. Once they land, they will head north to an abandoned temple to acquire and return one of the relics there, which will be a chest piece."
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"I feel like there is something missing."
"Well, yes. It is how the teams are formed. As you know, it is not random."
"Right."
"We launch students near others that we feel will be a good fit for them. And once they lock eyes with each other, they will become partners for the next four years. Additionally, since there are duplicate pieces, partners that bring back the same piece will become a team."
"Oh." Jaune said, now feeling like the initiation at MiB was relatively tame to Beacon's. And the primary reason was that Jaune knew the Emerald Forest was filled with Grimm. "But I have to be honest. That doesn't sound like the best way to make teams."
"You'd be surprised at the results, Jaune. But you are also partly right. Sometimes, teams are formed that are doomed to fail. And when that happens, we split them up and have the members join different teams."
"Alright. But I feel like my case would be different."
"Yes. It will be. I am still in the process of selecting the partner and team that would be best for you. I should be done by tonight. And by tomorrow, you will know who they are. We will also launch close to each other."
"Okay." Jaune said, glad he wouldn't have to worry about some bullies on his team and that his team would help him out.
Or that's at least what Ozpin claims.
"Now, you still have time before the orientation begins. You can head to the auditorium now or walk around and familiarize yourself with the layout of the school. If you need me, I'll be in my office." Ozpin said as they exited the room, with him locking the door. "Have a good day, Mr. Arc."
"You too." Jaune said as he watched the headmaster leave. He then let out a sigh as the full weight of his assignment came down on him. "This is going to be a long, painful few months. I should at least make the most of it."
Eight P.M.
'This certainly feels like high school.' Jaune thought as he sat in his seat in the auditorium.
After getting the sword and shield, Jaune headed to the auditorium to work on his cover story and somehow implement the crest on the sword and shield into it. Thankfully, aside from two kids asking him if he knew where the bathroom was, he was left alone for the most part. And Jaune was also thankful that he had the foresight to pack some snacks and drinks as he was getting hungry. Once he finished his cover story and wrote down everything that happened so far, Jaune relaxed in his seat and watched a movie on his scroll to pass the time. But as the hours ticked by and more students filled the auditorium, Jaune noticed all the familiar 'types' of students. There were the muscle heads, the popular kids, the rich kids, some who looked like hustlers, the socially awkward group that Jaune felt like he belonged to, and the nerds.
'All you need now is the group that belongs on the school council and sports team students, and it will really be like high school all over again. I know it's early, but I hope I get a pay raise after this.' Jaune thought as he saw Ozpin and Glynda arrive on the stage. Ozpin tapped the microphone twice to get everyone's attention.
"I see all of you are impatient to get started, so I will make this brief. You are all here hoping to breeze through the courses and training due to your natural skills. Many of you think it will be easy and that you are above all of this. I will not sugarcoat it, as you are all adults now." Ozpin said.
'Adults? Well, maybe since I'm pretty sure we are all eighteen? Well, except for me for another few months.' Jaune thought.
"But all I see before me is wasted skill and potential that belong to people with rocks for heads. I see people in need of guidance to hone their skills. These next four years will be challenging, and I do not expect more than a quarter of you to reach that point in time. During your time here at Beacon, you will all learn what it means and what it takes to protect the light and ensure the people of Remnant's survival. You will be its first line of defense against creatures that lurk in the darkest depths of hell. If you do not think you can handle this responsibility, you may leave now." Ozpin said before going silent. He waited a few moments for anyone to say something or to leave. But as he has come to expect, no one moved. "Very well. That is all for now. Glynda will inform you about the rest."
'That was... something. At least it was straight to the point... I guess.' Jaune thought, confused. While he did agree that not everyone was suited for such a heavy burden, he did not understand what was the point of the rest.
"Now, it is late. Find a spot in the auditorium or gymnasium to get some sleep, as you will need it. Tomorrow, you are all expected to be at Beacon's Cliff no later than eight am sharp for the next part of your initiation. Bring your weapons and armor, as you will need it. You will receive the rest of your information after the initiation is complete. All of you are now dismissed." Glynda said before leaving.
'Again, straight to the point. Well, I'd rather that than a bloat speech about how great the school is like in high school.' Jaune thought as he watched everyone leave, presumably to the gymnasium, since it was probably comfier to sleep there rather than in a chair. Yet, Jaune stayed as he knew it was going to be packed. Plus, he didn't feel like getting stared at or questioned why he wasn't trying to sleep or going to sleep since he was still on Centaurian Time, meaning he could go another twelve hours before needing some rest. Sighing, Jaune got out his portable charger for his scroll so he could watch some more movies. 'Well, at least unlike with high school, this assignment will probably only last a few months. And I have my neuralyzer so I can wipe the memories of others if something embarrassing happens. Plus, I can still leave at night to perform any other tasks I have. So, I guess not all is bad.'
