Chapter Text
Michael pulled his sword out of the last human, and roared. A bunch of other dragons roared in succession, as the fighting finally stopped. He turned and watched as piles of human and dragon bodies were piled and lit aflame. Cries of despair and joy were ringing through the battlefield. Many had lost loved ones and others, while the rest of them are joyous in their final victory. The remnants of Michael’s wolf army were collecting around them. The small forces he had been able to gather for the war were heavily injured. He turned to them and nodded, dismissing them to get the care they need. The leader of the native dragons walked up to him; he was bleeding but it didn’t hide his satisfaction.
“The species is safe, thank you.” He spoke to Michael.
Michael nodded, and sheathed his sword. “Now I will stay and make sure you prosper.”
[One point six two five million years later]
Two armored black dragons landed in front of a large tower, it was the last surviving trace of humankind, and the brothers had been ordered to take it out.
“Let’s hurry up and get this done, I want to get back to Flora as soon as possible.” The older dragon spoke.
“You two are inseparable.” The other dragon shook his head and smiled.
“That, and she’s going to go into heat soon, and would kill me if I miss it.” He replied “You will understand when you find a mate of your own, speaking of which, has anybody caught your attention?”
“I’ve been courting someone for a while, and I’m hopelessly in love with her, but there is a royal that is relentlessly courting her as well, and he won’t take no for an answer.”
“Sam, you just need to tell her your feelings, and hope she returns them, if she does, then get engaged, and he will be forced to leave you alone.”
“I know, but royal courting’s take priority over others.” Sam sighed.
“Not if you come first, how long have you been courting?”
“I don’t know Cal, two, maybe three years now.” Sam smiled to himself.
“And how long has he been trying?” Cal asked
“Six months, about.” Sam answered.
“Then you get priority.” Cal stated
“Alright, alright, I get it, let’s change the subject, am I going to be an uncle?” Sam turned to him.
Cal smiled. “We hope so, were going to try, let’s get this done.”
They stepped forward and shot dark beams at the tower, which promptly crumbled and fell. They sent a few more beams into the larger pieces that were left. Sam noticed a strange green glow and uncovered a rock.
“Cal, check this out.” He called.
Cal walked up and looked at the crystal.
“Don’t touch it, we don’t know what they were doing.” Cal told him. “There are a ton of skeletons all over the place now.”
Sam nodded, and used a special box to contain the crystal, he tied it to his back and they flew back home. The city of Sandar was beautiful, its massive metal skyscrapers glittered in the sunlight. The duo landed outside the laboratories and handed the box in so it can be studied, then they returned to their homes. Sam and Cal lived in the same building, and as they walked home, they kept chatting.
“Who are you courting by the way?” Cal asked
“Uhm, well, she’s a….”
“Wait, the only royal courting I’ve heard about was between that red guy and… Don’t tell me it’s Sapphire.” He interrupted.
Sam blushed, and nodded.
“Of all people, you had to fall in love with Michael’s daughter?” Cal smirked.
“I can’t control it.” Sam exclaimed. “It started when I first saw her training with Michael, she is so beautiful.”
“I remember that day, you looked at her like she was already your mate and she was calling you to bed.” Cal chuckled.
Sam blushed more, and looked over as Flora walked out of the building and nuzzled her mate.
“How was your trip?” She asked.
“It was fine, we had no problems, found a strange crystal though.” Cal told her. “We already handed it over to some scientists.”
She nodded, and watched Sam walk into the building and into the elevator. She turned back to her mate.
“What’s up with him?” She asked
“He’s in love with Sapphire.” Cal answered
She recoiled “He’s what?”
“Yeah, he’s in love with Sapphire, and she keeps getting courted by that prick I told you about.” He told her.
“Oh” She bit her lip. “I don’t mean to be rude, but I, uhm, it’s starting, and I don’t want to be in public.”
He blushed and followed her back into the house.
Sam stared at the mirror.
“How could she fall for me? I’m not good enough.” He spoke to himself.
He cleaned his scales as best as he could, and made himself look as nice as possible. He grabbed the bracelet he bought for her and stepped out of his room, he walked into an elevator with a green dragoness and waited.
“You look nice, going to see a special someone?” The green dragon asked.
“Yeah, but she’s too good for me.” Sam sighed “She deserves better.”
“First off, if you love her, she deserves nothing more, and second off, if she’s too good for you, you need to prove that she is perfect for you.” The green dragon replied “I know we don’t know each other, but I can tell you’re a good kid, and that you will treat her nice, I hope things turn out well for you.”
Sam thanked him as he stepped out of the elevator, then stepped out himself when it reached the ground floor. Sam took flight and made his way towards Sapphire’s house, he landed in front of it and slowly walked to the front door. Michael landed with a thump behind him, making him jump and look over at him.
“Hi, you here to see Sapphire?” He asked Sam
“Yeah, but I was hoping to talk to you first.” Sam replied.
His head cocked to the side. “She’s still getting ready, so go ahead.”
“I… uhm... don’t know how to say this… but, I…”
“Love my daughter?” Michael raised an eyebrow.
“Yes, more than anything, I… want to be her mate.” He closed his eyes and braced for Michael’s reaction.
“I know.” Then recoiled at Sam’s strange reaction. “What, did you think I was going to say no, I’m a god, I can tell when your feelings are real. You have my permission, if that’s what you’re asking for.”
Sam’s smile grew to cover his entire face, then it faltered a bit.
“But what about that other royal.” He asked
“Forget him, if he causes trouble, I will deal with it.” Michael scoffed
They walked into the house and Sam watched as Sapphire walked down the stairs. As usual, her beauty stunned him, leaving his jaw open a little. The dark blue dragoness turned to him and smiled, once again dazzling Sam.
“Hey there, ready to go?” She asked
Sam gulped and nodded, Michael smiled at them, then walked out of the room. As they were leaving, a dark red dragon caught up to them.
“Sis, you forgot this.” He handed her a necklace that perfectly fit her style, Sam remembered it was her favorite.
“Thanks Max, see you later.” She smiled and put the necklace on.
They walked out the front door, and out into the yard.
“Where too?” Sapphire asked.
“Somewhere new, follow me.” Sam smiled.
They took flight and Sam led her across the city, they landed in a small square that housed a quaint little restaurant.
“This is nice.” Sapphire smiled as she sat down.
“I found it on patrol a while back.” Sam replied “It’s really good.”
A wolf waitress approached them and winked at him.
“Hi Sam, the usual?” She asked.
“Times two please, thanks Elise” Sam told her.
She nodded and returned to the kitchen. Sapphire chuckled a little, her light smile made his heart melt.
“You’ve been here enough to be recognized.” She stated.
“Yeah, I check in on the community during my patrols, and this is the best place.” Sam replied.
His attention was drawn to something behind her, he smiled and waved, and Sapphire turned and noticed that he was waving at two younger dragons that were walking down the road. The waitress quickly returned with two plates of spaghetti and a bucket of bread. They dug into the food and Sapphire groaned at the taste.
“This is really good; how do they do this?” She asked
“The wolves that have passed down this restaurant come from a dimension that invented this kind of food.” Sam told her.
She smiled and nodded, they finished their meal and Sam paid.
“I can cover this, you know, money isn’t really a problem for me.” Sapphire told him.
“I know, but it’s not right.” Sam replied.
She sighed, and accepted her fate. They walked out onto the square and Sam was called by an elder wolfess. He looked over to his date, who nodded, before going up and talking for them for a minute. There was a thump next to Sapphire and she groaned when she noticed it was Ben, the royal that had been relentlessly advancing on her.
“Hey there, I noticed your shining beauty from miles away.” He called to her.
“Back off, I’m on a date.” She replied.
“And where is he, might I ask?”
“Over there, helping an old wolf fix her home.” She motioned over there.
“Why don’t you ditch him and we can go somewhere fun?” Ben turned to her.
“No, go away.”
“C’mon, why don’t you dump him and get with somebody who will treat you like the god you are?” He purred.
“I will beat the ever-loving…”
“Is something wrong here?” Sam asked.
“No, Sapphire and I were about to go somewhere else, and have a little fun.” Ben wiggled his eyebrows.
Sam’s face fell, he looked disappointed, and Sapphire realized that since Ben is a royal, there is nothing he could do if she did leave.
“That’s not true, Ben’s just leaving.” Sapphire snarled.
Sam’s expression lifted, and he turned back to Ben.
“Then now is the best time.” He smirked.
Ben gave him a mean look, then flew away. Sapphire smiled reassuringly at Sam and they took off. They landed next to a small pond, it was filled with fish and the moon sparkled beautifully off of its surface.
“Wow, this place is…”
“I was trying to find a place that could at least show a fraction of your beauty.” Sam purred.
Sapphire blushed. “Stop, you’re making me blush.”
“Listen, there is something I want to tell you. I… I… I’m in love with you Sapphire, and want you to be my mate, I have decided that you will be the only one for me, if you don’t return these feelings, tell me now, I can’t stand waiting anymore.” He closed his eyes and waited for her response.
“Sam… I” She froze.
He warily opened his eyes and looked at hers, they were sparkling brighter than the moon. She leaned in and kissed him, his eyes shot open and his heart burst out of his chest. He kissed her back, and they stayed like this for a moment, then they broke apart.
“I, love you too Sam. I also want to be your mate.” She whispered to him.
His eyes lit up at her beauty, it was all for him, she will be all for him. It made him so happy he felt like he would explode. Sapphire noticed the sheer joy and love emanating from him, and smiled.
“Now.” She grabbed him. “No engagement, we don’t need a ceremony, I want to be with you now.”
“Won’t Michael be mad?” Sam asked.
“You asked him permission.” She stated, not asked. “He gave it, so he won’t really care.”
Sam smiled and nuzzled her. “Yes, let’s skip all of it.”
Sam woke up and opened his eyes, his heart nearly exploded when he saw Sapphire’s sleeping face on top of him. He thought for a second that it was a dream, but now his reality made dreams jealous. He watched as she mumbled in her sleep. After a few hours, she opened her blue eyes and smiled at him.
“Morning.” Sam whispered to him.
“Hi.” She replied, then sighed. “We have to break the news to everyone; they’re going to make it so embarrassing.”
“There are only two people I want to tell, who are you telling?” He asked
“Michael, Max, all my friends, my blood aunts, their families, and about four hundred other people.” She replied.
They got up and stretched.
“I want to tell Ben.” Sam smirked.
“Go ahead.” Sapphire chuckled. “Go home, and pack your things, then come to my house.”
“I’m staying with you?” Sam replied.
“Technically Michael gave me that house a long time ago, they’re just staying in it, so it’s my house.”
“He gave you a house?”
“Yeah, I’m his daughter, he built it for me, and it’s our house, don’t forget it.”
Sam smiled, and kissed her. She blinked in surprise and kissed him back.
“Why did you wait almost three years for this?” She asked “I thought you were a snail for a second.”
He blushed. “I… ah… uhm.”
“I’m messing with you; I know you were just being patient for me.” She kissed him again “I’ll wait for you outside my house. You can tell your two people if you want.”
They flew off in different directions, Sam watched the blue figure of his new mate fly towards her house. Sam landed in front of his house and started to walk into the door.
“Hey! Burnt Toast!” Ben walked from around a corner.
Sam stopped and looked over at him with a strange expression “Burnt toast?”
“Get over it, hey, I’m courting that blue jewel, and you know that royal courtings take priority over the lesser ones.” Ben scoffed. “Back off, before I make you.”
“Where you here all night?” Sam asked, looking around.
“I figured you had a night shift.” Ben replied, then shook his head. “Did you not hear me; do I need to knock some sense into you?”
“Oh, right, I would leave her alone, but she’s my mate now so, that’s not happening.” Sam smirked
Ben did a double-take, then snarled. “Don’t make such jokes, she would never be with someone like you.”
Sam shrugged. “I believed that too, until last night, did you think I would have a night shift on the same night as a date?”
Ben blanched.
“I’m guessing you can smell her, she’s not here right now so…” Sam smirked more.
He sniffed, then growled. “How dare you…”
“Do we have a problem?” Cal walked out of the building.
“Nope.” Sam smiled “Not a bit, this conversation Is over, bye.”
Sam walked into the building, and Cal following.
“Hey!” He called to Sam. “Where were you all night.”
“Where’s Flora, I have something to announce.” Sam replied.
“She’s asleep, you’re lucky I saw you out the window or he would have…”
Sam cut in “Well, you will have to tell her yourself…”
“Did you get engaged? Oh, congratulations, that must be why your so confident.” Cal gasped.
“It’s a bit more than that… We are mated now.” Sam beamed.
Cal blinked “You what?”
“It’s as official as it gets, that’s why I was gone all night.” He smirked
“You, are, together, like, completely?” Cal stuttered, then shook his head. “Congrats bro, I thought you would never get it done.”
Sam blushed.
“Let’s go wake Flora, she will love the news.” Cal ran into the elevator
“Isn’t she still in…”
“Not anymore, I was planning on telling you when it’s more definite, but she should be pregnant.” Cal beamed. “You’re going to be an uncle.”
Sam laughed and smiled. “This is the best day, like ever.” Then he frowned. “But I have to move out.”
“Of course you do, we are too, can’t start a family here, it’s not right.” Cal laughed.
The elevator doors opened and they walked over to Cal’s house. He knocked on the door and poked his head in, then yelped when he was grabbed by the front legs and pulled through the door.
“Hey, sweetie, not now, Sam’s here, and he has news.” Sam heard Cal say.
The door opened again and Cal blushed and motioned him in. Flora was stretching and flexing her wings, and smiled at him.
“Hey.” She greeted.
“Hi.” Sam replied. “I have a mate now.”
She froze, and looked over at Cal, who nodded, she squealed and danced to herself.
“Finally, we thought you had a problem.”
Cal blushed, and Sam shot him a dirty look.
Flora got over her initial celebration, then paused again.
“Wait, mated or engaged.” She looked over at them.
“Mated, no ceremony.” Sam told her.
“Is it that blue one I’ve seen you with?” Flora replied.
Sam nodded “Sapphire, her name is Sapphire.”
She gasped “What a beautiful name.”
“She’s Michael’s daughter.” Cal stated
“Wait, like your boss’s daughter?” Flora asked.
Sam nodded again, and Flora gave him a strange look, then shook her head.
“Boys.” She mumbled
They talked for a minute before Sam went to his apartment and packed up his things, then he told his landlord about the termination of his living arrangements.
“You… Got a mate?” The wolf smiled. “Nice.”
“Yep, and she has a house of her own so I’m going to live there, I don’t need the apartment anymore.” Sam replied.
The wolf nodded and accepted the keys from the black dragon, then he walked out the main doors. Ben was still standing there, talking with some of his friends. When he saw Sam, he snarled and motioned his friends to look at him. They shot him dirty looks and Sam smiled and flicked his tail at them, daring them to make a move. The didn’t move, and he took off.
