The Twilight Hero Duo

Summary:

When all is said and done in Hyrule, the Heroes of Courage are turned into myth and Legend, only living on in the memories of those who knew them and in stories passed down through the ages.
When all is said and done on Earth, heroes become celebrities and stars, some for fame and fortune, and some for the hope of saving those in need.

When all their efforts end with Ganondorf dead, and Hyrule free of Twilight, Link and Midna both fall asleep in the infirmary next to each other, both exhausted from their year of fighting. Both unknowing wish for their time together to be longer, and the gods listen. They wish to reward their hero and the one who helped him, so they grant their wish, and send them somewhere where heroes are recognized and worshiped.

Now both must learn what they'll do when they end up in a place that is definitely not Hyrule, full of people who can do things that should be impossible (even by their standards), and hope that they survive and maybe make it home.

Chapter 1: You can't trust the Gods, because they don't know you

Chapter Text

A boy, about 15, was walking in the shade of the forest as he headed away from his home for the second part of his and his partner's goal.

“Hey Link? Do you ever wonder what would have changed if we were somewhere else? Like, a different country or realm besides Hyrule and the Twilight?”

“... Sometimes. But I think it’s good that we’re here. No one else has been able to stop what we have.”

“I think I would like it. Not having the world on our shoulders sounds nice.”

“If we beat Ganondorf, then we won’t anymore.”

“All the more reason to get to that Temple for the Mirror Shard, right?”

“Yeah, yeah, I get it! I’ll get a move on. You know, you can be really pushy.”

“Awww, Link, that hurt my feelings!”

“Well, you are pushy. Would you rather I lie?”

“Yes, I would! I am a princess, and should be treated like one!”

“Mhm, sure. I’ll treat you like a princess when I see a crown and a dress.”

“Well that’s just unfair.”

“Since when have you cared about fairness?”

“... fair.”

~~~After the final battle, inside Hyrule Castle~~~
The boy in green was waking up, still in all his gear and armor, the exhaustion clinging to him as he looked around and saw his companion in the corner of the room. When their eyes met, she jumped up and hugged him, keeping mind of his new wounds.
“You’re awake!”
“I would hope so…” The boy lost his snark when the last few hours came back to him “Midna, did we…?”
“Yes Link! We did it! We finally did it!”
They both cried for what felt like hours, until all that was left was exhaustion.
Neither cared that they fell asleep in each other's arms. Neither noticed the faint glow of triforce piece sitting on the boy's hand. Neither realized that, in that moment, they both wished for their time together to continue. Neither realized that, for once, after so long, the Goddesses felt like they owed the hero something, and listened to their wishes.
With their combined power, they made a choice that they believed the duo would like. They found a place, where heroes were worshiped and treated like royalty every day. A place where heroes get compensation and recognition. A place where the odd and extraordinary were a common day to day occurrence. A place where they wouldn’t be treated differently because of their actions or their realm of birth.
Of course, being gods, they could not see how this would affect the mortals. They saw it as a wonderful idea, not the terrifying one any mortal would see it as. They thought that seeing a new place where they wouldn’t be harmed because of their abilities would be an amazing thing for the mortals, and not the worst thing that either could think of. They thought that new experiences were great for gods like them when they get bored. They didn’t see it as ripping the two mortals from their friends, family, world, and safety.
So, Naryu, in all her Wisdom, came up with a way to send the mortals to this realm and give them some help.
So, Din, in all her Power, brought up all the magic and strength needed to make a gateway there and conjured up ways for them to be safe.
So, Farore, in all her Courage, used her connection with the hero to drag him and his companion to the gateway, both mortals unaware of what was happening around them.
Hylia, in all her Golden Light, let it happen, because she believed that it was what the hero wanted, and she chose to listen for once.
Sadly, the problem with asking for something from a god is that they never read between the lines, and they never realize how much pain they cause to those they wish to help.
